7 Takeaways From WWE SmackDown (10/10)

This week’s episode of SmackDown aired live from the Van Andel Arena in Grand Rapids, Michigan. It was the first episode of SmackDown following WWE Hell in a Cell 2017 this past Sunday. Here are 7 takeaways from this week’s SmackDown:

The Usos & New Day Kicked Off SmackDown With A Truce

New SmackDown Tag Team Champions The Usos came down to the ring to kick off this week’s SmackDown. Jimmy and Jey bragged about having the entire SmackDown tag division on lock and welcomed everyone to The Uso penitentiary. The Usos called out New Day and stated that they had something to say to them face-to-face.

New Day came down the entrance ramp. Woods and Big E were selling injuries from the Hell in a Cell match on Sunday. Kofi did not compete in the match and was the only one still dancing around. Big E, Kofi and Woods got in the ring as the crowd in attendance chanted “New Day rocks!”.

The Usos said that compared to them and New Day, the other teams in the back suck. Jimmy and Jey added that every time the two teams step in the ring the WWE Universe knows that they are seeing the best. The Usos said that the two teams belong here and that they run the tag division.

Jimmy and Jey said that they respected New Day and extended their hand for a handshake. New Day was about to shake hands with The Usos when the Hype Bros. Mojo said that it’s always the same two teams taking all the credit. The Usos told Mojo to sit on the sideline like he did for his entire NFL career.

Gable and Benjamin joined the party. Gable told the Hype Bros to get to the back of the line. The Usos stated that both Gable and Benjamin should head to the back of the line as well. Breezango and The Ascension then came down to the entrance ramp.

SmackDown General Manager Daniel Bryan came out and announced that tonight was really not a good night for this. Bryan thanked New Day and The Usos for the great match at Hell in a Cell and told them to get out of the ring. Bryan stated that the four teams will compete in a Fatal 4-Way to determine who will face The Usos for the SmackDown Tag Team Championships in the near future.

Gable & Benjamin Are #1 Contenders

Gable & Benjamin vs. Hype Bros vs. The Ascension vs. Breezango

The Usos stuck around and sat by the announce table to watch the match. SmackDown went to a quick commercial break during the first couple of minute of the match. During the break, Konnor beat the hell out of Zack Ryder. When SmackDown returned, Mojo was tagged in and slammed Tyler Breeze to the mat.

Mojo went for the cover but every single Superstar in the match leaped into the ring to break up the pinfall. Ryder went for the Broski boot but Fandango dragged Breezango out of the way. Gable and Benjamin then cleaned house and hit a double Powerbomb/Bulldog on Tyler Breeze for the victory.

Gable & Benjamin are now the #1 contenders for the SmackDown Tag Team Championships. I was hoping for Breezango to win this one, but Gable & Benjamin are very capable of tearing the house down with The Usos. The crowd was heavily behind Breezango but still provided a positive reaction when Gable & Benjamin emerged victorious.

Charlotte Attacked Natalya Backstage, Becky Lynch Easily Defeated Carmella

Becky Lynch & Charlotte

Carmella, Lana and Tamina approached SmackDown Women’s Champion Natalya backstage. Tamina said that she wanted to be champion. Carmella said the same and then Charlotte showed up. Natalya asked Charlotte why she was upset and said that it must be because she let her pathetic father down again. Charlotte then lost it and attacked Natalya. Becky Lynch and Naomi then showed up and started brawling with Tamina and Carmella before security broke the fight up.

Becky Lynch vs. Carmella

James Ellsworth tried to motivate Carmella during the match as he was chained to the ring post like an idiot. The action spilled outside the ring and Becky started arguing with Ellsworth. Carmella took advantage and booted Becky in the knee. Carmella brought Becky back in the ring and applied a Chin Lock. Becky battled out of it and quickly applied the Dis-Arm-Her for the victory.

Carmella has lost a ton of momentum since winning the MITB contract. There was a time where she cut a couple of great promos in back-to-back weeks and the crowd legitimately didn’t like her. She feels like an afterthought right now and I have no idea what purpose Ellsworth serves on the roster anymore.

Sami Zayn & Kevin Owens Are Best Friends Again

Kevin Owens came down to the ring and bragged about defeating Shane McMahon at Hell in a Cell. Owens claimed that Shane McMahon is gone and is never coming back. Owens added that at one point on Sunday he felt his soul separate from his body and that he was standing in a long line at the Pearly Gates. Owens said that he spoke to Saint Peter himself and he informed him that the people on Earth needed Kevin Owens and then he provided him with a guardian angel in Sami Zayn.

Owens says that he now knows his purpose and that is to turn SmackDown into his own heaven. Owens welcomed everyone to the Kevin Owens Show and introduced his guardian angel Sami Zayn. Sami danced his way down the entrance ramp with a gigantic smile on his face.

Owens thanked Sami from the bottom of his heart. Sami said that he will explain everything and thanked Owens for Powerbombing him on the ring apron a couple of weeks back because it opened his eyes. Sami stated that he tried to do everything the right way and it brought him to mediocrity.

Sami said that he thought his time had come when Shane McMahon brought him to SmackDown. Sami claimed that Shane said that SmackDown would give him the opportunity and the respect that he deserved. Zayn stated that was the last meeting that he ever had with Shane McMahon before he tried to tell him what Owens what capable of a couple of weeks ago. Zayn said that was the moment he realized that Shane McMahon never cared about him or cared if he got an opportunity.

Zayn claimed that he wanted Shane to win on Sunday and that Shane had the match won on Sunday after he knocked him off the cell through the announce table. Zayn said that he had to save Kevin Owens because he was his brother and that Shane only cared about himself when he went climbed up the cage once again for an Elbow Drop. Owens and Zayn shared a hug and celebrated together in the ring.

Nakamura Teamed Up With Orton, Harper & Rowan Are Back

Shinsuke Nakamura teamed up with Orton for some reason tonight to defeat Aiden English and Rusev. Orton planted Rusev with an RKO and then Nakamura connected with the Kinshasa on Aiden Englsih for the victory. Nakamura has been damaged by his feud with Jinder Mahal and no longer feels special. I thought Nakamura was a sure bet when he joined the main roster, but WWE has managed to completely screw it up.

Harper & Rowan vignette

Finally! Luke Harper is back on SmackDown and he is back with Erick Rowan. WWE aired a bizarre vignette with the two Superstars and they referred to themselves as the Bludgeon Brothers.

Ziggler & Roode Stunk Up The Joint

This promo was the opposite of glorious. It was painful to listen to. Bobby Roode came down to the ring with his epic entrance and discussed his victory over Dolph Ziggler at Hell in a Cell this past Sunday. Dolph quickly interrupted and just like at Hell in a Cell, his entrance music cut out and he came down to the entrance ramp in silence.

Ziggler put up a picture of Roode grabbing his tights during the roll-up on Sunday and said that Roode cheated to win. Dolph added that he wants a rematch. Bobby Roode then had a brain-fart on live television and completely forgot his lines. He stumbled his way through the promo and challenged Ziggler to a match. Dolph walked down towards the ring and then said that tonight wasn’t the night. Ziggler added that he will determine when his rematch is and walked back stage. It was then announced a few minutes later that Ziggler and Roode will have a match next week.

Corbin Defeated Styles Clean To Retain US Title

Baron Corbin defended his United States Championship against AJ Styles in the SmackDown main event. Corbin spent the beginning of the match getting his ass kicked by Styles. When SmackDown returned from a commercial break, Corbin was in control of the match. Corbin got cocky and started posing in the ring and Styles knocked him to the canvas.

Styles knocked Corbin out of the ring and connected with a Dropkick that sent Baron flying over the announce table. Back in the ring, AJ connected with a forearm and followed it up with an Ushigoroshi for a two count. AJ charged at Corbin but Baron was ready and planted him with the Deep Six.

AJ went for the Calf Crusher but Corbin blocked it. Styles then launched Corbin into the ring post and locked in the Calf Crusher in the middle of the ring. Corbin broke the hold by bouncing AJ’s head off the mat. AJ responded by hitting a Pele Kick and Corbin rolled out of the ring. AJ charged at Corbin on the ring apron and went for a knee but Corbin stepped aside and launched AJ to the floor outside the ring.

Corbin brought AJ back in the ring and hit the End of Days for the victory. After the match, Corbin said that the United States Championship was his and he was going to buy a boat and float down the river of the WWE Universe’s tears.

This was a huge victory for Corbin tonight. He has been made to look like a joke recently on SmackDown. He lost his MITB cash-in match in embarrassing fashion against Jinder Mahal. He then got his ass kicked by John Cena at SummerSlam. Corbin absolutely needed this victory and AJ Styles doesn’t need the United States Championship at all. I hope that Styles now returns to the main event scene and Corbin gets a substantial run with the US Title.
