WWE Hall of Famer Jerry “The King” Lawler gave his take on the King of the Ring tournament and WWE’s decision to bring it back this year.
He did so while speaking with Wrestling Inc’s Andy Malnoske during a recent interview where he noted that when WWE came up with the tournament that is when he showed up in WWE. He noted that he’s still a little upset about.
He talked about how it’s easy to win a couple of matches and slide a crown on your head then call themselves the King of the Ring.
“For them to have a one-night or two-night tournament to crown a king, I’m not too crazy about it. But they use it as an opportunity to promote somebody and put somebody in the spotlight which, in that respect, I understand so I can’t be too upset about it.”
Lawler added that he promised WWE that he wouldn’t go in the ring and spoil the coronation of the new king.
There will be 16 competitors in the tournament with eight from RAW and eight from SmackDown Live. The tournament starts this week.
The finals of the tournament will take place at the Clash of Champions pay-per-view event on Sunday, September 15th from Charlotte, North Carolina at the Spectrum Center.
