  • Former WWE Star Having Retirement Match, Now Working As A Deputy Sheriff

Former WWE Superstar Bull Buchanan (Barry Buchanan), who is now working as a deputy in the Carroll County, Georgia Sheriff’s office, will be having his retirement match this coming weekend.

“Dreams do come true,” Buchanan told 11alive.com. “I’ve lived one dream, now I’m starting another.”

Buchanan is working a retirement match for charity this Sunday at the Bowdon High School in Bowdon, Georgia. Buchanan will team with another former WWE Superstar, D’Lo Brown, in the main event of the show.

  • One Year Ago: WWE Survivor Series

We are just days away from the WWE’s latest pay-per-view, Survivor Series. At last year’s event, Randy Orton defended his championship against the Big Show in a highly criticized main event. This time around, it will be John Cena risking his job in an attempt to slay the Authority.

The shelf life of a WWE superstar can be short, so it’s always important for competitors to make the most of their time in the ring, especially at pay-per-views. Here is a look at the superstars who have progressed, regressed, or remained stagnant over the past year.

    Progression:

    Luke Harper

    luke-harper

Harper has made tremendous strides over the past year. He and former partner Erick Rowan were destroyed by Daniel Bryan and CM Punk at last year’s Survivor Series. He walks into this year’s event as a surprise Intercontinental Champion, and is booked into the main event with Team Authority. Harper’s stock is definitely on the rise.

    Ryback

    ryback-ses-5

It appears the company is once again fond of Ryback. The Big Guy was basically buried in the midcard after his feud with John Cena last year, including a quick defeat at the hands of Mark Henry last year at Survivor Series. He has been the focal point of WWE television over the past few weeks, so it will be interesting to see where they go from here. One can hope that this isn’t simply a stopgap measure until guys like Reigns and Lesnar get back on television.

    Honorable Mention: Ambrose/Rollins

    Dean-Ambrose-attacks-Seth-Rollins

It’s difficult to talk about progression without mentioning the former Shield brothers. These two were destroyed last year in a match whose only purpose was to get Roman Reigns over as a singles competitor. (Dean Ambrose was eliminated 2 minutes into this match and Rollins eventually stepped aside so the Spear party could commence.) What difference a year makes, however. Rollins is the leader of Team Authority and arguably the star of the main event, while Ambrose has elevated himself and will attempt to solidify the midcard on Sunday.

Debut Set For WWE NXT Star, Former WWE Star Becomes A Deputy, Eva Marie’s Salute To Troops

    – This week’s edition of WWE NXT has already aired in Australia and a vignette hyping the debut of the wrestler known as Kevin Steen was shown. The date 12/11/14 appears on the screen as it faded to black.

December 11, 2014 is of course the date of the NXT Takeover special on the WWE Network.

    – Barry Buchanan, who competed as Recon, Bull Buchanan and B² in WWE, is now a deputy with the Carroll County Sheriff’s Office in Georgia. His move from the wrestling ring to holding a deputy badge is profiled here.

While continuing to wrestle, Buchanan entered the field last year at Carroll County Jail. Now that he is becoming a deputy, he is hanging up the boots later this month, with a retirement event for charity.

“Dreams do come true,” he said. “I’ve lived one dream, now I’m starting another.”

    – Eva Marie and WWE Hall of Famer Ricky “The Dragon” Steamboat were on hand for USO Metropolitan Washington’s annual Salute to Military Chefs event in Pentagon City on Wednesday night. The absent WWE Diva says she was proud to take part in the experience.

“The greatest part of being a #WWE Diva is being able to be a part of nights like tonight,” Eva Marie wrote on Instagram. “I love and respect our military beyond words, And it is amazing to be a part of a company that feels the same @WWE . Honored to take part in this year’s “USO Metro Salute To Military Chiefs Dinner” Thank you to all of our service men and women for what you do day in and day out!”

Update On Rumor Of AJ Lee Leaving WWE, Team Cena vs. Team Authority Hype Video, Rusev & Lana

    – Bryan Alvarez of F4WOnline.com mentioned during Sunday’s edition of Wrestling Observer Live that there’s a rumor going around in WWE that AJ Lee could be parting ways with the organization shortly after Survivor Series on Sunday. Dave Meltzer, however, says in this week’s issue of Wrestling Observer Newsletter-published Wednesday on F4WOnline.com-that the rumor is not true.

“By the way, contrary to some rumors, she is not leaving,” Meltzer noted in his recap of Nikki Bella’s “exhibition” against Brie Bella on Raw-Brie was dressed as Lee.

    – The official YouTube account of WWE released this video hyping the Team Cena vs. Team Authority Match at Survivor Series.

    – Rusev and Lana were in attendance at Wednesday’s Orlando Magic vs. Los Angeles Clippers game at the Amway Arena in Orlando, Florida.

Reason Why Certain WWE Superstars Are Featured In WrestleMania 31 Ads

As seen in recent ads for WrestleMania 31, the WWE Superstars that are most prominently featured in the majority of those ads are Daniel Bryan, Brock Lesnar, John Cena, Roman Reigns, Mark Henry, Bray Wyatt and Dean Ambrose. Apparently the reason Henry is included among those guys is because the WWE advertising department were told to include an African-American in the main ads for the show.

Other ads for the show, such as those at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, California, where the show will take place next year, have Randy Orton and Bad News Barrett instead of Dean Ambrose and Daniel Bryan, and include Big E. as one of the big six.

Kamala Talks Life As A Double-Amputee, Negative Dealings With Vince McMahon

BleacherReport.com has published a story looking at the rise and fall of “The Ugandan Giant” Kamala, who now lives his life as a double-amputee. In the article, the former WWE Superstar discusses his present circumstances and looks back at his lengthy wrestling career.

On November 7, 2011, Kamala, who’s real name is James Harris, had his leg amputated below the knee due to complications of high blood pressure and diabetes. His right leg was amputated the following spring. This was due to Harris going nearly 20 years without paying attention to his health.

Harris had been urged by his physicians to begin dialysis treatment after being diagnosed with diabetes in 1992. He ignored their advice, choosing instead to carry on with his life as if the disease wasn’t present within him. Poor eating habits pushed his weight past 400-pounds in 2002; a simple walk from the parking lot to his physician’s office caused him to become short of breath.

“‘If you don’t go on dialysis soon, you’re going to start losing body parts,'” the doctor told Harris.

    “I wish I would’ve listened,” says Harris.

A few days after noticing fluid leaking from his foot in September 2011, Harris went to a doctor and had three of his toes removed. Within a month of the surgery, Harris returned to the hospital to have his entire foot amputated. The recovery process was so painful that a few days later, he asked the doctor to remove the rest of his leg above the knee.

The pain was excruciating for Harris as screams echoed through the halls of Baptist Memorial Hospital the day after surgery. His dosage of anesthetics increased, and Harris’ wife, Emmer, tried to calm him down by clutching his hand. It did not work as Harris wailed in agony throughout the day while nurses plead with him to stop.

Harris endured the same ordeal the following spring by losing his right leg.

“I could hardly stomach it,” he says.

Medicaid paid for a $6,000 pair of prosthetic legs for Harris, but because of his great size, doctors struggled to attach them to his stumps. Rather than cling to false hope of walking again, Harris adjusted to life as a double-amputee.

“I didn’t even want to look down at first,” says Harris, who found the situation difficult to accept. “But when I came home (from the hospital), I would look down, and I’d cry a little. I’d think, ‘I’m not normal, am I? I’m not normal anymore. People are going to treat me like I’m not normal.’ But I made it through. I made it through.

“I still have crying spells, but they’re not as bad as they used to be.”

Harris has never been shy about expressing his displeasure about how he was treated in WWE, and does so again in this article. However, he now admits he was partly to blame.

Harris says his biggest mistake was leaving WWE without warning in 1987 due to unhappiness with pay, after feuding with Hulk Hogan and Jake “The Snake” Roberts. He now feels he should’ve handled things differently.

“I can understand now why Vince [McMahon] would’ve been upset,” he says.

Harris returned to the company in 1992, but it was still a struggle for him financially. Since WWE makes most performers pay their own hotel and rental car fees, there were nights when Harris would sleep in his vehicle so he wouldn’t have to pay for a room. He was released in July 1993, two weeks after his sister and his niece were murdered by his sister’s husband.

Asked to comment on its relationship with Harris, WWE released this statement:

“During his time at WWE and the other organizations he performed for, Jim Harris’s larger-than-life character, Kamala, resonated with fans around the world. Jim had several stints with WWE, where he was given every opportunity to succeed, often being paired with such legends as Hulk Hogan and The Undertaker.

“Ultimately, Jim was the one who made the decisions to leave WWE. WWE appreciates the contributions he made to our organization, and we send him our best wishes as he continues to fight health challenges.”

Harris hopes his relationship with WWE going forward is a positive one.

“A lot of the things I’ve said about the WWE…I don’t mean them,” Harris says. “I’m proud to say I worked there. I just always hoped that one day Vince would accept me like he did some of the other wrestlers.

“I wish things would’ve been better.”

Much more is contained in the article, with Harris discussing his day-to-day life in Senatobia, Mississippi, his early life, the creation of Kamala, wrestling the likes of Andre the Giant and Hulk Hogan, the WWE Hall of Fame, and his outlook on life now that he is no longer on top. Jim Ross, Jerry “The King” Lawler, “The Million Dollar Man” Ted DiBiase, Mick Foley and Koko B. Ware were also interviewed for the piece.
