Former WCW Women’s Champion Akira Hokuto Diagnosed With Breast Cancer

Akira Hokuto(real name Hisako Sasaki), best known in the west as the only WCW Women’s Champion, announced on her blog (Japanese) that she has been diagnosed with breast cancer. Mainstream Japanese sites like Huffington Post Japan have picked up the story. No real proper translation has shown up yet, so some of the details are still vague, but what’s clear is that doctors have discovered a malignant tumor in her right breast and she’s going to be undergoing surgery. The details lost in translation are just how major the surgery is (removing the tumor vs. removing the entire breast or both breasts).

In Japan, there are cultural taboos and superstition when it comes to talking about cancer. When past Japanese wrestling superstars, like Giant Baba, had cancer, it was kept quiet. When Baba passed away, it was reported as being from “internal organ disease,” Hokuto is a huge mainstream television star in Japan, regularly appearing on talk shows, variety shows, travel shows, etc. She has enough of a media presence that speaking openly about her battle with cancer (and especially breast cancer) could legitimately have a pretty big cultural impact.

Hokuto is usually considered, at worst, on of the five greatest female workers of all time. Under her real (maiden) name of Hisako Uno, she was being groomed for stardom by the All Japan Women promotion in the late ’80s  when she broke her neck taking a second rope tombstone piledriver in the first fall of a best two out of three falls match. Somehow, she finished the match, which was the beginning of her well-earned reputation for toughness and working through injuries. She returned as “Dangerous Queen” Akira Hokuto and made her mark one of the very best in the world regardless of gender throughout the ’90s and into the early aughts.

Jim Ross Blog: Paige’s RAW Promo, Demon Kane Returns, Sting’s Status, Jericho/Reigns

WWE Hall Of Famer Jim Ross recently updated the official blog section of his website with his latest thoughts and opinions on a number of noteworthy topics coming out of this week’s RAW. Below are some of the highlights.

On Paige’s RAW promo: “Loved Paige’s interview as it did not feel like it was recited from memory and from the pen of some writer who was channeling Paige with what he or she ‘thought’ Paige would say in the situation that she was in. Good stuff…organic and real. Show stealer.”

On “The Demon” Kane: “Kane in the mask is good for me. I like that level of nostalgia. Not sure where it’s headed nor do I care. I will stay tuned. When I signed Glenn Jacobs I was only worried if his personality would evolve as he was somewhat quite. It has and he’s become a Hall of Fame talent. I’m not prouder of any one that I’ve signed more than Glenn Jacobs who has become a Hall of Famer in life which is where the “money” is.”

On Chris Jericho vs. Roman Reigns: “Putting Chris Jericho vs. Roman Reigns down the road is smart booking.”

On Sting’s condition: “Sources say that Sting is awaiting results of multiple tests on his neck that was injured on Sunday night. Hopefully, the info will be positive for a guy I’ve known his entire career since the Mid South days.”

Scott Hall Tells Behind-The-Scenes Stories Involving Ultimate Warrior, Lack Of Title Shots

WWE Hall Of Famer Scott Hall recently spoke with the folks at Title Match Wrestling about why he didn’t receive as many world title shots as others did, as well as the back-story behind an incident involving Ultimate Warrior during his WWE run.

“I was doing whatever was asked of me,” said Hall of not being put in many world title matches. “I looked at it as being a team player, whatever the team needed me to do on pay-per-view. Whether it was being on first or being on last.

Hall was also asked about some major reshuffling that took place prior to WWE Survivor Series 1992, as significant roster changes prevented the originally scheduled line-up from taking place.

“It was supposed to be Flair and I against Warrior and Savage. Warrior had a history of holding Vince up for money before pay-per-views to get his guarantees, and Vince called his bluff. They had to substitute for Warrior, so they brought Mr. Perfect in,” Hall said.

“I was told prior to the match I was going to break Randy’s leg and retire him. But when you have a substitute, you have to feature the substitute, so I think I got PerfectPlex’d and Flair got PerfectPlex’d.”

Daniel Bryan Comments On His In-Ring Future, WWE Not Clearing Him

Daniel Bryan recently spoke with Sport 360 about his health, his in-ring future and being stripped of the WWE World Heavyweight Championship back in 2014.

After overcoming the odds in 2014, riding the wave of the Yes! Movement and capturing the WWE World Heavyweight championship at WrestleMania XXX, Bryan’s world fell apart when his father passed away shortly after and doctors told him he was working with a career-threatening neck injury. Bryan said:

“It’s was very frustrating, but more the health aspect of it is: the title part isn’t the big deal. The big deal is how wrestling is the way I express myself creatively, not being able to do it has made me frustrated. I’ve tried to transition this into gardening, but it’s not the same. I’m working on it though!

“When I came back from neck surgery I felt like I didn’t miss a bit in terms of fan support. It will be interesting to see what it will be like when/if I come back from this one. I feel like when you get multiple injuries then fans start to lose faith in you.”

His latest hiatus from the ring has to do with concussions. WWE doctors haven’t cleared him to wrestle, but Bryan is optimistic that he’ll be back in action one day.

“No, at least not in my mind. WWE might be thinking that, but I feel great. I feel like I’m ready to wrestle. If they called me to wrestle tomorrow, I would. It’s just a matter of getting cleared. I’ve had a long history of concussions, so they are a bit hesitant to get me back.”

Chris Jericho Comments On The Fan Going To Jail For Entering The Ring

WWE is cracking down on fans who jump the ringside gates and insert themselves into the show. The latest incident took place at Sunday’s Night of Champions pay-per-view, with Oscar Ramirez of Houston, TX  entering the ring and standing next to Dean Ambrose and Roman Reigns.

WWE pressed charges and Ramirez will spend 10 days in jail after pleading guilty to criminal trespass of a property or building with no forced entry.

Chris Jericho tweeted the following about the incident:

Spoilers – WWE SmackDown Tapings Results (9/24)

WWE taped this week’s episode of SmackDown on Tuesday night from Corpus Christi, TX at the American Bank Center. Here are spoiler results, courtesy of Andy Ravens:

– Kane walks down to the ring to open the show. He cuts a promo about being back in WWE and how happy he is. He said that WWE is on fire right now then announces Kevin Owens and Rusev vs. Dolph Ziggler and Ryback plusRoman Reigns vs. Luke Harper with Dean Ambrose banned from ringside. Seth Rollins walked out to the stage and said that Kane needs to stop pretending who he is. He brought up RAW and that Kane is playing everyone by being corporate Kane. This leads to Kane asking Rollins nicely, then after Rollins refusing too, demanded that Rollins walk down to the ring. Rollins said that Kane needs help and Kane said that he would take Rollins’ advice. Kane booked Rollins vs. Ambrose in the main event.

– Singles Match: Roman Reigns defeated Luke Harper with a spear.

– There is a New Day segment shown.

– New Day cuts a pre-match promo about how they will avoid going through a table and retain their Tag Team Championships against The Dudley Boyz at the MSG live special on October 3rd.

– Six-Man Tag Team Match: The New Day defeated The Lucha Dragons and Neville.

– Singles Match: Cesaro defeated Bo Dallas.

– Charlotte and Becky Lynch are in the ring cutting a promo about Paige turning on them on Monday’s RAW. This leads to Paige walking down to the ring. Paige talks about starting the Divas Revolution and how she’s the one who should be thanked for it, not them. Natalya interrupts and walks down to the ring. Natalya said that Paige should be happy with how things are now. Paige wanted change and that’s what she got. Paige agreed, but also stated that Natalya let the Revolution pass her by and now she’s trying to be relevant. Paige slaps Natalya and leaves the ring.

– Tag Team Match: Ryback and Dolph Ziggler defeated Rusev and Kevin Owens when Owens left ringside, which distracted Rusev enough to turn around into a superkick by Ziggler.

– Main Event: Dean Ambrose defeated Seth Rollins when Kane’s music hit, which distracted Rollins enough for Ambrose to pick up the victory.

Post-match, Rollins grabbed the microphone and said that he is tired of the mind games by Kane. This leads to the pyro on the ring posts going off, which scares Rollins and he ran to the back as Kane is shown on the titantron laughing to close the show.

Jim Ross Comments On Sting’s Injury, WWE’s Booking Of Seth Rollins

WWE Hall of Famer Jim Ross has updated the Q&A section of his website and commented on Sting suffering a neck injury at Sunday’s night of Champions pay-per-view.

A fan said it looked like Rollins botched a move on Sting and asked at what point Rollins would get heat for injuring opponents. JR said, “It’s a physical business and certainly isn’t ballet. Accidents happen. If a trend develops, and two situations isn’t a trend, then you may have a valid point.”

In response to a question about the way Rollins has been booked lately, JR replied, “Booking is highly subjective and can’t truly be judged over the short term. I’d likely tweak how Rollins is being booked, but that doesn’t make me right either. I think WWE is setting him up for an eventual ‘face turn down the road and I have no issues with where Seth is at this time at it’s a marathon and not a sprint even though many fans today have little to no patience.”

Video: Randy Savage’s Brother Lanny Poffo Takes Aim At Barack Obama & Hillary Clinton

Embedded below, listed as simply “a poem by Lanny Poffo,” is a video that shows Poffo, real-life brother of the late WWE Hall Of Famer “Macho Man” Randy Savage (Randy Poffo), talking about current United States President Barack Obama, as well as 2016 U.S. Presidential candidate Hillary Clinton.

WWE Fan Who Hit The Ring At Night Of Champions Going To Jail

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JzUMnuQteLI

If you thought that the recent string of fans hitting the ring during matches involving former Shield members Seth Rollins, Roman Reigns, and Dean Ambrose was an angle, we can now be pretty certain it wasn’t. Today, PWInsider.com reported that the fan who jumped the rail and ran in the ring as Reigns and Ambrose uneviled mystery partner Chris Jericho at Night of Champions has not only been charged, but will be doing some jail time.

Oscar Ramirez, a 37 year old fan from Houston, Texas, was dressed in Shield attire and started posing before he was quickly removed by security and arrested. He was charged with criminal trespass of a property or building with no forced entry. Within hours, Ramirez entered a guilty plea and will serve 10 days in jail. If found guilty at a trial, he could have been sentenced to six months behind bars.

Until the fan was identified, the incident was used by a few fans as proof that the whole series of incidents had been a work. At least in the screenshots of his brief on-camera appearance, he had more than a passing resemblance to NXT referee and former independent wrestler Drake “Drake Younger” Wuertz. This caused Drake t take to Twitter to make it clear that he had not appeared on the pay-per-view:

https://twitter.com/WWEDrakeWuertz/status/645976770970275841

Hopefully WWE is tightening up security in addition t hoping that criminal charges will act as a deterrent.

Jeff Jarrett Talks About WWE & The Attitude Era, nWo/Bullet Club, GFW & More

Global Force Wrestling founder Jeff Jarrett was recently interviewed about a number of topics, including his time in WWE, his plans for the future of his new, upstart GFW promotion and more. Below are some of the highlights.

On the Attitude Era and his time in WWE: “Everybody that was part of that era on both rosters were just stacked full of talent. WCW was stacked top to bottom, the WWE being stacked right to the bottom. Everyone was scratching and clawing and doing their best too. It was drastically different in 97’, 98’, 99’ then it was in 91’, 92’, 93’ and everybody had an edge and some more than others. I had a series of matches with X-Pac and DX which culminated in a hair match and there were some other matchs it was such a unique time and I was fortunate to be a part of both organizations during the Monday Night Wars. From 95-96’ and 96’-97 and 97’-99’. I jumped back and forth so I was there when the nWo was red hot and I was there when Stone Cold and The Rock and DX were red hot. It was a really cool time in the business and the business was red hot.”

On the nWo & evolving pro wrestling: “The original core group of the nWo, the original three Scott (Hall), Kevin (Nash) and Hulk (Hogan) are obviously the very best version. They do say though that the most sincere form of flattery is imitation so, as it rolled along there were different versions of the Four Horsemen, there were different versions of nWo and then it split to red and black and then it reunited. That’s a part of this business that has always been around and hopefully it won’t always be around but at Global Force what we are trying to do is to truly evolve the presentation and the production of professional wrestling because the world see’s so much more in 2015 it really does. There are Youtube stars that have never been on TV but they have their own Youtube channel and they are truly pop culture stars. That goes to show you in my opinion in 2015 where the world is heading. You don’t need to be on broadcast network like you had to be 15-20 years ago. The age of the digital technology especially with all the social media platforms it’s just a different era.”

On the Bullet Club: ” Those guys, the Young Bucks, Doc and Karl have already been part of our Grand Slam Tour shows the first seven that we’ve had. The in ring ability of the Bullet Club versus the in ring ability of the nWo and I think those guys (nWo) would be the first to tell you is that without question would say the Bullet Club is off the charts bell to bell more talented. They organically came out from Fergal DeVitt and Karl Anderson and those guys came up through the hard way in the New Japan dojo. They worked their butts off, match after match, tour after tour. The timing was right also as it all exploded all at once. It is a completely different set of circumstances then the nWo when it was real life set of circumstances when Scott Hall, Kevin Nash, arguably two of the biggest four or five guys in the WWF at the time defected and went south and were taking over. That was as real as it gets. But when you talk about competitive and Global Force Wrestling, we are going to bring that type of competition to the forefront.”

On his Characters: “I have always enjoyed being challenged. The ‘Double J MMA’ was a lot of fun to this day, I am undefeated in MMA bouts and had a lot of fun with that as well. Also the series of matches that I had with Kurt (Angle) at that stage of my career is something that I’m very proud of. I know he pushed me, I hope I pushed him. We turned out some really physically brutal matches but it was rewarding and like any wrestler you have to evolve and evolve with the times and keep challenging yourselves and the audience will latch on to that and realise that the effort is all about that and all about effort and in 2015 the wrestling fan is so acute to what is going on. They do not take a lack of effort ever.”

Update On Sting’s Neck Injury, MRI Results Revealed

After undergoing medical tests to determine the extent of his injuries at Night of Champions, we can thankfully report that Sting’s neck is not broken.

Sting was taken to the hospital after Night of Champions and reportedly underwent a CAT scan and MRI. According to Dave Meltzer on Wrestling Observer Radio, “He was able to walk [after the PPV], but he was not doing well … The MRI showed no fractures”

There had been plans for Sting to appear in the opening segment of RAW, but he wound up going home after a long 24 hours. Sting suffered the neck injury after taking a powerbomb into turnbuckles at Night Of Champions. Despite the relieving medical news, Meltzer thinks WWE is “going to be leery” about putting Sting back in the ring after this close call.

Movie About The Murders Of Luchadores Screening On Festival Circuit

The website for the Toronto International Film Festival has an entry from a new wrestling-related movie titled “Bleak Street” or “La Calle De La Amargura.” It premiered at the festival last week. The movieis based on the 2009 murders of Alberto and Alejandro Jiménez, a pair of brothers and mini luchadores best known as La Parkita (mini La Parka) and Espectrito Jr. Women posing as prostitutes lured them to a hotel room where they drugged the brothers’ drinks and intended to rob them while they were unconscious. Not accounting for their size relative to the men they normally targeted, the men overdosed and died. Police tracked down the two women, who were convicted a year later and each sentenced to 47 years in prison.

The film festival’s site summarizes the plot as follows:

The 2009 deaths of fraternal wrestlers La Parkita and Espectrito Jr. made headlines all over Mexico. These miniluchadores — little people who function as mascots for their hulking counterparts — were drugged by two women in a Cuauhtémoc hotel. The women only meant to knock out the brothers and take their money, but the doses were misjudged, and the robbery turned into murder.

As reimagined by scenarist Paz Alicia Garciadiego, Ripstein’s wife and long-time collaborator, this sensationalistic news item becomes a platform for a series of engrossing character studies through which we get to know the brothers and their two killers. Sketching the events just before and after that fateful night in the hotel, the film conducts a wry examination of Mexico City’s marginalized, whether they be exploited entertainers with threadbare costumes or aging sex workers trying to earn enough to support their dependents.

The Hollywood Reporter reviewed the movie after the Venice Film Festival, lauding the cinematography but not necessarily the character building in th writing.

WWE RAW Results – September 21, 2015

The Wyatt Family, Roman Reigns, Dean Ambrose & Randy Orton Kick Off RAW

The post-Night Of Champions edition of WWE RAW kicks off with The Wyatt Family cut-in immediately happening, followed by the lights going out and Bray Wyatt making his way to the ring holding his lantern and being accompanied by his Wyatt Family members Braun Strowman and Luke Harper.

The music fades but the lights stay extremely dim as The Wyatt Family are in the ring now. Bray starts off by addressing Roman Reigns, calling him a fool for attempting to run from his destiny. He continues to talk about The Wyatt Family’s destruction of Reigns, Dean Ambrose and Chris Jericho at last night’s pay-per-view.

Before Wyatt can gloat or talk anymore trash, he is cut off by the theme song of Roman Reigns. With that said, Reigns — by himself — makes his way through the crowd as he heads down to the ring.

The fans chant “Roman Reigns! Roman Reigns!” as he enters the ring with a mic. Reigns says it’s not about Roman Reigns, it’s about Roman Reigns and Bray Wyatt. He tells Wyatt to send Strowman and Harper “back to the swamp,” claiming then we will see who makes it out of Laredo, Texas tonight, the site of tonight’s RAW.

As Wyatt, off-mic, explains why it’s a dumb idea, Reigns pulls his punk card by saying they don’t need a referee, they don’t even need to have a match. He suggests they just have a fight, so he drops his microphone and stares the trio down.

Wyatt sends Strowman and Harper out of the ring and he and Reigns immediately start trading punches. Finally, Reigns gets the better of the exchanges, including flooring Wyatt with a Superman punch. As Reigns has Wyatt down and pounding on him, Strowman and Harper hit the ring and attack Reigns.

As they prepare to beat him down some more, Dean Ambrose’s them hits. Ambrose charges to the ring as Strowman tries to meet him half way up the ramp. Ambrose runs right past him, hits the ring and takes out Harper. He then hits a dive through the ropes, crashing onto Strowman on the floor, but Strowman still didn’t budge. Ambrose goes back into the ring, runs and dives through the ropes onto him on the floor again, but again Strowman won’t go down. Ambrose hops on Strowman’s back, but Braun just walks around with him on the floor and eventually slams him down.

Meanwhile, Ambrose and Harper are fighting on one side while Strowman is working over Reigns. Ambrose, now with Harper out of the picture, heads over to help Reigns with Strowman. Strowman gets the better of him too. Now The Wyatt Family members are in firm control as the fans chant “Y2J! Y2J!”

As The Wyatt Family licks their chops and prepares to further punish the already down and out Reigns and Ambrose, out of nowhere, Randy Orton’s theme hits. “The Viper” sprints to the ring and starts taking out The Wyatt Family members one man at a time. He back-suplexes Harper through an announce table. He fires away at Strowman with punches now but a Strowman headbutt slows Orton down. Strowman throws Orton back in the ring and goes in after him.

Strowman waits for Orton to get back to his feet, only for Ambrose to come off the top rope with a flying dropkick. Strowman still didn’t go down. And another. He still didn’t go down. Finally, Reigns hits a Superman punch that knocks Strowman over the top and out to the floor, but in old school Undertaker style, Strowman landed on his feet. On that note, we shoot to the announce table where Michael Cole, JBL and Byron Saxton, who officially introduce us to the show and then introduce some video highlights of Seth Rollins’ two title matches at last night’s WWE Night Of Champions pay-per-view in Houston, including what went down with Sheamus and Kane after his match with Sting.

Backstage: Corporate Kane & Seth Rollins

Backstage, we see Rollins outside a dressing room. He barges in thinking he’s going to talk to Triple H and Stephanie McMahon, only to see Kane from behind in a suit with his regular short hair. Rollins, in mid-sentence, began talking about how we need to come up with a plan after what happened last night.

Once Kane turns around, Rollins seems confused. Kane asks what they need to figure out a plan for. He insists on playing dumb, pretending tonight is his first night back at work, as if “The Demon Kane” or “Masked Kane” is a completely different person. Before Rollins leaves, Kane tells him that Rollins vs. Cena rematch for the U.S. Championship is scheduled for tonight. Rollins just says, “right. right…” and then walks off confused. On that note, we head to our first commercial break of the evening.

Sting Released From The Hospital, Manager Issues Statement

Sting’s manager, Steve Martinez, has issued a statement about his client’s rumored neck injury via the official, verified “The Real Sting” Facebook page:

“As many of you may already know, Sting is undergoing treatment for the injuries he sustained in last night’s match with Seth Rollins. Doctors will continue to evaluate his condition, but he is a man of remarkable health and resiliency, especially at his age and with all he’s endured throughout his stellar career. Therefore, we are optimistic he will have a speedy recovery and return to full health soon. Sting has kept his body in excellent shape, due largely to the guidance he’s received from his personal trainer Jeff Cavaliere (ATHLEAN-X), and we trust this will prove beneficial to the recovery process. As a side note, we later learned the greatest damage to his body took place before the match was over, but being the true professional he is and among the hardest workers to ever step foot in the ring, he insisted to see the match through to the end.

-Steve Martinez”

Last night, during the Sting vs. Seth Rollins main event, Rollins gave Sting the Buckle Bomb and Sting appeared to not take the bump as straight as he should. THe match was stopped briefly but Sting got his wind back and they soon went to the finish, with Rollins getting the pin by countering the Scorpion Deathlock into a cradle.

According to TMZ, Sting underwent a CAT scan at the hospital Sunday and thankfully there were no fractures. Sting was released Monday afternoon and is on his way home. He’s able to walk but is in significant pain. TMZ’s headline reads, “Full Recovery Uncertain.”
