WWE Announces Big Cass Is Injured After Beatdown By The Mechanics

WWE.com has announced that Colin Cassady suffered a sprained MCL and bone bruise in his left knee as a result of an attack by Dash Wilder & Scott Dawson on this week’s episode of NXT.

“According to NXT medical personnel, Cassady did not sustain any damage to his ACL in the incident.

The injury is not unlike that suffered by Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger in September, which to date has sidelined Roethlisberger for about four weeks.

Cassady is expected to be out of the ring for four to six weeks as he recovers from the injury.”

Cass worked the NXT Aftershock festival shows this past weekend, so this appears to just be a storyline injury.

STAMFORD, Conn.–(BUSINESS WIRE)–WWE (NYSE:WWE) today announced financial results for its third quarter ended September 30, 2015. For the quarter, the Company reported net income of $10.4 million, or $0.14 per share, compared to a net loss of $5.9 million, or $0.08 loss per share, in the third quarter last year.

“During the quarter, we made significant progress on the growth of our global subscription service, WWE Network,” said WWE Chairman & CEO Vince McMahon. “We also continued to strengthen our talent base, achieved significant international growth and increased engagement across our digital and social media platforms. Over the next year, we expect to leverage our brand and content initiatives to further enhance engagement, promote network subscription, and maximize our long-term earnings growth.”

George Barrios, Chief Strategy & Financial Officer, added “Our solid earnings growth for the quarter was driven primarily by the increase in WWE Network subscribers, the escalation of our television rights fees, as well as higher effective ticket prices at our live events. Key metrics, such as the record attendance at our SummerSlam events, viewership of our original content, and social media presence demonstrate the increasing strength of our WWE brands, which are the foundation of our long-term growth.”

WWE Network Update: Third Quarter Highlights

Network segment OIBDA reached $40.2 million on a trailing twelve-month basis, which is comparable to the recent average annual OIBDA results of the Company’s pay-per-view business before Network launch. Network segment revenue increased 57% from the prior year quarter. Supporting the growth in revenue, WWE Network had 1,233,000 paid subscribers at quarter end, and averaged approximately 1,173,000 paid subscribers during the quarter, representing a 62% increase from the prior year quarter.

During the quarter, the Company premiered more than 85 hours of original content on WWE Network, increased the network’s comprehensive on-demand library to more than 3,700 hours, and continued to broaden its global distribution. From inception through September 30, 2015, WWE Network attracted nearly 2.3 million unique subscribers with approximately 54% of these subscribers active as of that date.

* Original content: WWE Network’s compelling live and original content, including the Company’s pay-per-views, original series, NXT Live, and other specials continued to drive viewer engagement. Among the content that debuted during the quarter, live event specials Beast in the East (produced from Japan on July 4th) and NXT Takeover: Brooklyn (produced in the U.S. on August 22nd) were among the network’s top programs. Episodes of the original series Swerved (produced with Jeff Tremaine, Director of Jackass and Bad Grandpa) and Stone Cold Podcast continued to garner a high level of viewership, and the live event special, Live from Madison Square Garden, which was produced in New York on October 3rd, recently became the network’s most watched program to date (excluding pay-per-view).

* Acquisition & Retention: To acquire and engage subscribers, the Company utilized its sizeable social media and digital assets, including video sampling on Facebook and WWE.com, leveraged the network’s “watch list” technology, and in October introduced a three-month subscription card exclusively at Walmart. The card is intended to facilitate subscriptions by enabling a “no credit card required” payment option.

* Customer engagement: During the quarter, 90% of subscribers accessed WWE Network at least once per month. Consumer research indicates that 91% of subscribers are satisfied with WWE Network.

* Content distribution: The Company continued to expand distribution, making the network available on Android TV and Windows 10 platforms in August. Additionally, the Company continued to broaden the global distribution of WWE Network, which was made available in Italy and Malaysia in July 2015. At quarter-end, WWE Network had approximately 243,000 international subscribers1.

(1)Average paid subscribers are calculated based on the arithmetic daily mean over the relevant period, and may differ substantially from paid subscribers at the end of any period due to the timing of paid subscriber additions. Trial subscribers acquired during a promotional period are not counted as paying subscribers until they convert after the end of the free period.

WWE Network Update: Future Plans

To grow WWE Network, the Company is executing a five-part strategy, including creating new content, implementing high impact customer acquisition and retention programs, introducing new features, expanding distribution platforms, and entering new geographies. The Company is focused on expanding the network’s line-up of compelling original content as a critical element of this strategy.

* Programming: The Company expects to add approximately 90 hours of original content to the network’s featured programming in the fourth quarter 2015. Exciting original programming coming to the network includes Breaking Ground, a reality series in the style of HBO’s Hard Knocks, which chronicles what it takes to become a WWE Superstar; NXT Takeover: London, a live event special produced from Wembley Arena in the U.K. (December 16th); as well as new episodes of WWE 24 and Stone Cold Podcast. In addition, the Company will continue to expand WWE Network’s robust video-on-demand library, which currently has more than 3,700 hours of content.

* Acquisition & Retention: The Company plans to further leverage its sizeable social media and digital assets to acquire and retain new subscribers. On October 25, the Company aired the premiere episode of Breaking Ground, a network original, on Facebook and YouTube. Plans call for the increasing use of video sampling on Facebook, YouTube and WWE.com to build awareness of WWE Network and its compelling programs. The Company is also continuing investment in its data analytics platform to enable a personalized network viewing experience.

* Features/Distribution: Other important elements of the Company’s network strategy include improving the user experience and content discovery across devices and continuing to expand distribution platforms. Over the coming months, the Company will continue to improve the user experience by enhancing the network’s search functionality, adding the ability to organize content as themed “collections” and allowing non-subscribers the ability to explore the breadth and depth of programs available on the service.

* Geographies – India, Germany and Japan: The Company will make WWE Network available across the Indian subcontinent (India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Bhutan, Maldives and Afghanistan) on November 2nd, as well as Germany and Japan in January 2016, and continues to develop plans for geographic expansion to China, Thailand and the Philippines.

2015 Business Outlook

For the fourth quarter 2015, the Company expects ending paid network subscribers of approximately 1.2 million, representing essentially flat results from the third quarter 2015 and an approximate 50% increase from the end of the fourth quarter 2014. The Company also projects fourth quarter Adjusted OIBDA of approximately $4 million to $8 million. This performance would result in Adjusted OIBDA of $62 million to $66 million for the full year 2015.2

(2) Reconciliation of Operating Income to Adjusted OIBDA can be found in the Supplemental Information in this release.

2016 Perspective

Over the next few years, WWE management anticipates that the contractual escalation of television rights fees and the acquisition and retention of WWE Network subscribers will be the key drivers of revenue growth for the Company. The Company’s seven largest distribution agreements account for revenue that is expected to increase from $130 million in 2014 to approximately $235 million in 2018, thereby providing approximately $105 million of revenue growth over this period (subject to counterparty risk). The Company projects that it will realize nearly $45 million of this growth in 2015. The remaining $60 million is expected to be recognized over the subsequent three years and include annual escalations over that period. Accordingly, revenue from these agreements is expected to reach approximately $190 million in 2016. Regarding WWE Network, given the inherent uncertainty of this nascent and growing business, management will not provide guidance for 2016 subscriber levels. However, the Company has evaluated other successful subscription businesses and observed a wide range of subscriber growth rates in the early stages of their development. For example, during the early stages of its development as a streaming service, Netflix’s paid subscribers grew at an average annual rate of 22%.3 Using Netflix growth as a potential benchmark, management would characterize an annual growth rate of 20% to 25% for WWE Network as very strong performance. If the average paid subscribers to WWE Network increased at a rate within this range in 2016, management currently estimates WWE’s overall revenue could grow approximately 5% – 10% driven primarily by the increase in network subscribers and the escalation of television rights fees. Management currently estimates that this level of revenue growth could result in 2016 Adjusted OIBDA of approximately $90 million to $100 million with no other changes to the Company’s operations. However, as management believes there is a significant long term growth opportunity for WWE, the Company’s expected approach will balance earnings growth with investment in three key areas: content, technology and emerging markets. Assuming investment in these areas, 2016 Adjusted OIBDA could be in a range of approximately $70 million to $85 million.

(3) Netflix’s domestic paid streaming subscribers (in thousands) increased from 15,863 to 42,068 from the third-quarter 2010 to the third-quarter 2015, representing an average annual growth rate of 21.5%. Source: Netflix Financial Statements.

(4) The definition of Adjusted OIBDA can be found in the supplemental schedules of this release on pages 16-18.

Comparability of Results

In the prior year quarter, the Company recorded a one-time pre-tax restructuring charge of $4.2 million comprised of severance and other costs ($2.1 million recorded in Corporate and Other Expenses, $0.3 million in Digital Media segment expense, and $1.8 million in depreciation expense) and a $4.0 million impairment of an equity investment.

Results for the nine months ended September 30, 2014 included a $4.2 million restructuring charge, a $4.0 million impairment of an equity investment, and a $1.6 million adjustment to reduce the carrying value of the old Corporate Aircraft to its estimated fair value in conjunction with the sale of this asset, which occurred during the third quarter 2014. In order to facilitate an analysis of financial results on a comparable basis where noted, the Company’s results have been adjusted to exclude these items. (See Schedule of Adjustments in Supplemental Information).

Details On Alberto Del Rio’s Unique WWE Deal, Finishing Up With AAA

Alberto Del Rio negotiated one hell of a new WWE contract for himself, according to the Wrestling Observer Newsletter. WWE was so in need of a top-level Hispanic star that they reportedly offered him a $1,450,000 per year downside guarantee with a reduced schedule. WWE’s top tier of performers typically sign $1 million per year deals, with bonuses from merchandise and PPV’s pushing their earnings even higher.

Del Rio’s previous run with WWE ended back on August 7th, 2014 after he slapped WWE social media employee Cody Barbierri back stage in retaliation for a racial joke made towards him. Barbierri is long gone and industry insiders have seen it being just a matter of time before Del Rio returned home to WWE.

Del Rio was one of the top free agents around and had  been in negotiations with various pro wrestling and MMA promotions. He is the reigning AAA Mega Champion and remains on good terms with them, despite their disappointment with the situation.

Del Rio was booked for 7 big shows for AAA in November. With WWE heading to Europe for several weeks next month, Del Rio could honor most of those commitments, if WWE does not bring him overseas. AAA had plans for Del Rio as far out as December 5th, when he was scheduled to face Jeff Jarrett in a hair vs. hair match on December 5th at Guerra de Titanes.

The big picture plan for Del Rio is to push him as a strong heel before eventually turning him so he can eventually work as the Mexican hero WWE has wanted for years.

Gawker Trying To Appeal Latest Ruling In Hulk Hogan Case

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-D53kCsSHzw

The latest chapter in the drama between Gawker and Hulk Hogan (real name Terry Bollea) came yesterday, with Gawker attempting to file a stay to block a judge’s ruling while they file an appeal. That’s the ruling from last week, when  Judge Pamela Campbell ruled that a forensic investigator can be hired at Hulk Hogan’s request to search Gawker’s computers and phones. The goal? Discovering if Gawker violated a court order in their lawsuit.

Hogan is suing because Gawker published excerpts of a sex tape shot without his permission on a friend’s home security system, and insisting that Gawker is playing dirty. The allegation/ That the leak of Hogan’s racist comments that got him fired by WWE came from Gawker, and that they sourced sealed documents to facilitate said leak. While not the only sealed documents in the lawsuit, everything from the FBI’s investigation into Hogan being extorted via the sex tapes has been sealed from the public.

Gawker is arguing that there is little basis for such a wide examination of employees’ and in-house counsel’s computers. They also cite their earlier filings when they responded to Hogan’s attempt to get the investigation going, which shed more light on, among other things, exactly what Gawker received from the FBI. With the argument being that there’s barely even circumstantial evidence that Gawker was behind the leak, they state that:

* A timeline of what’s contained in the Hogan/Heather Cole sex tapes was circulating in New York and Tampa radio circles by March 2012.

* Other parties who were well aware of Hogan’s racist comments before this past July included Bubba Clem, Heather Cole, Nik Riichie of TheDirty.com, the source of an October 2012 item in the Philadelphia Daily News, Keith Davidson (the lawyer who tried to help a client sell the videos to Hogan or extort money from him depending on your view), Davidson’s client, numerous federal investigators, and TMZ’s Mike Walters,

* Gawker didn’t have most of what was released by the National Enquirer in the first place, with what they have from the FBI being incomplete. The audio of the FBI sting on Davidson (where Hogan, his lawyer, and Davidson watch the videos) “simply does not include most of the quotes reported by the Enquirer.”

The radio community timeline, which Gawker got in discovery, “does not contain the racist language published by the Enquirer. It also does not reference Bollea’s use of homophobic slurs, as reported by the Enquirer.” Davidson’s transcripts, which Gawker’s lawyers got from the FBI, also don’t match what the Enquirer published.

Specific examples of quotes that the Enquirer had that Gawker’s lawyers didn’t included some of the most damning ones. That includes “I guess we’re all a little racist. F**king n***er,” which is probably the most cited one because it’s used to refute people who say Hogan’s not a racist.

* Gawker never had proof of the racist comments “in large part because Bollea successfully thwarted Gawker’s efforts to obtain that proof or take any discovery about the contents of the timeline and transcripts.”

Hogan had, under oath, represented to the court and the Special Discovery Magistrate overseeing the sealed documents that he besides what Gawker got in 2012, he “had no knowledge of the existence of any other tapes.” In actuality, he watched all three (the one Gawker got, the one with the racist comments, and one more) during the FBI sting. He also claimed that any allegations of racist comments on the videos were lies fabricated by an extortionist.

In a hearing on July 1st, a few weeks before the leak, Hogan’s lawyers claimed that if a video with the racist comments existed, then the audio may be from an impersonator hired by the extortionist. They also argued that the rumors of such comments may have been coming from the extortionist. On top of that, it was argued that mentions of the FBI investigation shouldn’t be allowed in the case because it was “predicated on these tapes purportedly saying something that they don’t say.”

* The DVDs of the sex videos Gawker has are heavily edited. None of the racist comments were included. At the time of the leak, “reprocessed” versions of the DVDs (there were issues with the first one) had not yet been seen by Gawker’s lawyers.

* The Enquirer and its reporters have always claimed that Gawker was not one of their five sources for the articles. They also worded the articles to make it clear that the sources had access to the unedited videos themselves, or at least it seemed that way.

Regardless of your feelings as to the main case and whether Hogan should win that, it does seem like Gawker has a very compelling argument when it comes to this. While the appeals court itself has generally favored Gawker, this attempt at getting a stay is with the trial judge, who has seemingly favored Hogan. It should be interesting to se where this goes, and we’ll keep you apprised of any updates.

Paige Reveals Why She Turned On Charlotte & Becky Lynch

Paige was Michael Cole’s guest for this week’s WWE.com sit down interview. Cole began by saying that he’s known Paige for a long time and asked her flat out, what happened? Paige said she wasn’t sure what Cole was referring to, so he clarified that he wants to know what happened to her. Paige said nothing has changed and she’s still the woman who became the youngest Divas Champion in history last year.

Cole said that Paige hasn’t given him the time of day over the past few weeks and she said she’s just been busy keeping the Divas Revolution alive. Cole questioned her about why she stabbed her Team PCB partners Charlotte and Becky Lynch in the back on Monday’s RAW. Paige said the success of the Divas Revolution got to their heads and she needed to bring them down to earth. Paige said she is the Divas Revolution and they need to show her some respect.

Video: Paige Turns Heel On Charlotte and Becky Lynch

Cole finds it all hard to believe, since Charlotte and Becky Lynch are respectful people and Charlotte has told him personally that she admires Paige’s accomplishments. Paige said nobody else has seen the real Charlotte and she dropped her former partners to keep them humble and hungry.

Cole said he doesn’t think Paige is responsible for the Divas Revolution. He referenced Natalya and Nikki Bella as being more influential than Paige. Cole asked her if she is the person who attacked Natalya several weeks ago. Paige vehemently denied it and said she’s got bigger and better things to worry about.

Paige and Natalya will face off this Thursday on SmackDown.

Additional Notes On New WWE Signings: What Indie Stars Got Signed?

Earlier, we posted WWE’s press release listing the latest developmental signees to report to to the Performance Center. Not all of the names WWE announced were necessarily breaking news, as the Tough Enough winners were on there, but there were plenty of other names that hadn’t been officially announced yet. That includes a few of the most notable names on the independent scene…sort of. WWE makes a point of only including real names, so it wasn’t immediately apparent who some of the wrestlers were.

That said, Richard Swann of Baltimore, Maryland is obviously Rich Swann, best known for his work in CZW, Dragon Gate, PWG, WXW, and the WWN family of promotions (Dragon Gate USA, Evolve, and Full Impact Pro). He’s a talented high flyer known for moves like the Rich Kick, a standing 450 Splash.

Christopher Girard of Boston, Massachusetts, is best known as Biff Busick. He’s made the rounds a in many of the same promotions as Swann, but he has more of a hard-hitting, grounded style. Which isn’t to say he doesn’t fly, but he doesn’t do it as much as Swann.

Finally, Adrienne Reese of Dallas, Texas is Athena. Originally trained by Rodney Mack with additional training later from Booker T, she’s been one of the top female wrestlers on the independent scene for several years. She’s incredibly smooth in the ring, with a nice, well-rounded mix of submissions, some flying, and more. It’s not an exaggeration at all to say that she’s probably right with or just below Natalya and Asuka as the best and most polished women on the roster.

According to F4WOnline.com, plans as of this week call for Cena to return at the December 13th WWE TLC pay-per-view from his hometown of Boston. The idea is to have Cena return and face Alberto Del Rio for the WWE United States Championship in a rematch from Sunday’s WWE Hell In A Cell pay-per-view.

While plans could always change, that is what WWE has in store for Cena’s return as of this week. We will keep you posted if any additional information becomes available.

WWE Final Raw Rating For 10/26/15 Shows Mixed Success

Last night, we brought you the hourly viewership numbers for Monday’s edition of WWE Monday Night Raw and the approximate average based on the mean of those three hours. Since then, more detailed information has come out from Dave Meltzer at F4WOnline and James Caldwell at PWTorch.

The rating itself (percentage of homes with USA Network watching Raw) was a 2.46, up 11% from last week’s 2.21. Last week’s episode was tied with the Christmas Eve 2012 show as the lowest rated edition of Raw since 1997, so the increase is good news. That said, the average viewership across the whole ~three hour show 3.54 million, down just 20,000 viewers from last week’s 3.56 million mark. That means that less viewers were watching per home than last week. The rating a year ago, for the October 27, 2014 show, was a 2.71.

Overall, the pattern is still not good, but there were signs of encouragement, like the increase in households as well as the biggest third hour number in five weeks. and the biggest first hour in a couple months. With the hot crowd providing a better atmosphere than we’ve seen lately and it being a consensus strong show, it will be interesting to see if that momentum carries over to next week.

Christian Now Listed As Alumni On WWE’s Website

Christian’s days in the ring appear to be officially over, according to his Superstar profile at WWE.com. His bio has been moved to the Alumni section and has been updated with the following description:

“Upon realizing the honor of inducting his longtime friend and former partner, Edge, into the WWE Hall of Fame in 2012, Christian confessed to experiencing a “moment of clarity” that reset his own career goals. He returned from injury at WWE Over the Limit 2012 and won a Battle Royal and a match with Cody Rhodes to claim the Intercontinental Championship for the fourth time.

His reign ended on Raw 1,000, and Christian was out of action for nearly a year with a shoulder injury. He returned in June 2013, once again poised to win the World Heavyweight Championship. Although he never regain the title, he solidified his legacy and left active competition still at the top of his game.”

The former World Heavyweight champion has been out of action since suffering a concussion last year. He appeared on the Stone Cold Podcast with his childhood friend Edge, but did not make an official statement on his in-ring future during that interview.

Hulk Hogan Wants To Finish His Career With WWE, Expendables 4 Update

Hulk Hogan recently spoke with The Star to promote his upcoming “Evening with Hulk Hogan” event in the UK. Here some highlights of what Hogan said about:

His best opponent:

“The best I’ve ever grappled was The Rock. This guy had the talent. He had everything. If things went wrong in the ring he knew how to fix things on the spot. Not just an instinct. He had a really good feel for this business. So The Rock, without a doubt was easily the best. The toughest I ever had to wrestle and the most memorable match ever was Andre the Giant, at Wrestlemania III.

“I have to talk about the ‘Macho Man‘ Randy Savage. I cannot talk about wrestling without him. He was my main stay. He was the guy I used to love to wrestle any time I could because you always knew you were going to get the ‘Macho Man’. That was very important to have someone come at you wide open. I had a lot of good ones. You can’t forget Piper really, we had some epic battles.”

If he’s talked with Sylvester Stallone about The Expendables 4:

“I haven’t talked to him. But there’s a bunch of people who have thrown my name around and done stuff. I’d love to read the script. I don’t know how many more Expendables they’re going to make, so I’d love to be in the next one. I’d love to be the bad guy again in a Stallone movie. It would be a lot of fun.”

Wanting to End His Career with WWE:

“There’s a lot of wrestling opportunities out there. WWE would be a great place to end my career. Everything would have to be very calculated. I’d want to go out there one last time to have fun. It would have to be something I’d really have to have a handle on, because I can’t afford any more downtime or surgery.”
