Lana Returns On RAW (Video)

Lana made her return on Monday’s RAW and reunited with Rusev. The two appeared together on Miz TV, with Lana explaining her motivation for returning to Rusev’s side and saying their engagement was the greatest moment of their life. They also revealed that neither went “all the way” with Dolph Ziggler or Summer Rae. Good to know!

Lana tweeted the following after RAW about her reconciliation with Rusev:

Video: Tommy Dreamer Returns On This Week’s WWE RAW

Former WWE Superstar and ECW Original Tommy Dreamer made his WWE return on Monday’s edition of RAW at the CONSOL Energy Center in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

Dreamer returned during a promo segment that turned into a match between The Dudley Boyz and The Wyatt Family.

Bubba Ray and Devon were cutting a promo in the ring when the four Wyatt Family members — Bray Wyatt, Braun Strowman, Luke Harper and Erick Rowan — hit the ring. The Dudleyz claimed that they too had family on their side, which led to Dreamer making his way out.

The ECW Original made his way to the ring with a trash can full of weapons, which led to he and The Dudleyz teaming on to take on The Wyatt Family in a match on RAW. The match ended up finishing in a no contest, with Bubba Ray putting Bray through a table after the match to end the segment.

The New Day, Sheamus & Roman Reigns Kick Off RAW

This week’s show opens up with confetti pouring from the ceiling when out comes The New Day.

Big E. has some fun dancing and then because he was sweating too much, Xavier Woods handed him a Pittsburgh Steelers “Terrible Towel,” which he used to wipe all the sweat off his body with.

Eventually, The New Day introduces the new WWE World Heavyweight Champion Sheamus, who comes to the ring in a suit as Michael Cole, JBL and Byron Saxton officially welcome us to RAW.

Sheamus thanks the audience and said he is so proud to be their WWE World Heavyweight Champion. He also thanks New Day for an “amazing” introduction tonight. The Pittsburgh crowd starts up a “YOU LOOK STUPID” chant and Sheamus said the only people that look stupid is the audience. New Day also jokes about the water being so bad in Pittsburgh with Kingston saying it is so dirty.

Sheamus wants to give it up for The Authority – Triple H and Stephanie McMahon. He said they taught him that when opportunity comes your way, you put on your best suit, your best smile and you open that door and say, “How’s it goin’ fella?” Kingston said opportunity leaves if you are stubborn. Sheamus said the person he wants to thank the most is Roman Reigns.

Finally, Reigns hits the ring out of nowhere while Sheamus was wrapping up in the ring, blasting the WWE champ with a Superman punch. Reigns then stole the WWE title and headed to the top of the ramp smiling, while Sheamus recovered in the ring. We head to our first commercial of the evening.

Backstage: The Authority & Roman Reigns

Backstage, The Authority — Triple H and Stephanie McMahon — stop Roman Reigns in the backstage area. Reigns still has the WWE title. They inform him that Sheamus wants his rematch earlier than the TLC PPV. He wants it tonight. They mock Reigns with the 5:15 thing, and tell Reigns to become champion, he must defeat Sheamus in under five minutes and 15 seconds.

Tyler Breeze vs. Dolph Ziggler

We see Tyler Breeze in the ring with Summer Rae when Dolph Ziggler’s music hits and “The Show Off” makes his way to the ring for tonight’s first match on RAW.

The cut to an early break while Ziggler was selling at ringside. [C] Breeze remained in offensive control coming out of the break and Ziggler continued to sell a shoulder injury.

Breeze went for his Unprettier finisher, but Ziggler countered into a backslide for a two count. They traded several covers and then Ziggler hit a superkick and scored the clean pin…

Winner: Dolph Ziggler

Backstage: Rusev & Lana

A shot aired of a smiling Rusev backstage. Lana entered the picture wearing her wedding ring. Cole hyped that they would both appear on Miz TV.

Miz TV With Rusev & Lana

The Miz hosted his Miz TV talk show with Rusev as his guest. The fans chanted USA. Rusev told the fans tonight is not about USA. Miz said Rusev looks to be back with vengeance. Rusev cut off Miz. He started to speak and then stopped when a loud “We Want Lana” chant broke out. Rusev said everyone wants her, but she is his. Rusev complained that only one person cared about him while he was sidelined.

Lana made her entrance and WWE gave TMZ credit for the 50th time for “breaking the story” of their engagement. Don’t worry, ESPN, they’ll make it up to you. Miz worked in another TMZ plug and then Lana spoke about how it’s the happiest time in her life. She said the past is forgotten. She said she never went all the way with Dolph. The fans chanted “yes, you did.” Rusev also said he did not go all the way with Summer Rae. Lana and Rusev kissed.

Ryback vs. Rusev

Ryback made his entrance and said they are in Pittsburgh where they believe in smash mouth. He said it’s not an episode of Teen Wolf, it’s an episode of Raw and the big guy is hungry. Cole hyped Ryback vs. Rusev for after the break.

The match was joined in progress. Ryback threw an early missile dropkick from the second rope. They went to ringside and Ryback shoved Rusev into the ring steps, which then slammed into Lana’s leg. Rusev was counted out while checking on Lana.

Winner via Count Out: Ryback

WWE Website Officially Lists Steve Austin As “Retired”

According to WWE.com, “Stone Cold” Steve Austin is officially retired from wrestling. The official WWE website ran a feature about how retiring wrestlers have “said goodbye” to WWE and

The feature lists his WrestleMania 19 match against The Rock as his retirement match. The ‘Mania match was not billed as a retirement match, but it did end up being Austin’s last time competing in the ring.

Despite Austin stating on more than one occasion that he doesn’t want to get back in the ring, there have been rumors on the internet of him returning at this year’s WrestleMania in Texas. Austin killed the rumors by saying there’s “no amount of money WWE could offer” him to get back in the ring.

The WWE Hall of Famer also stated earlier this month that he is “99.9% sure” that he’s already wrestled his last match.

Bayley In No Rush To Get Called Up To The Main Roster

It turns out that Finn Balor is not the only champion in NXT who is in no hurry to get called up to the main roster. NXT Women’s Champion Bayley recently spoke to The Independent to promote NXT’s upcoming UK tour (December 10-16) and said,

“I definitely want to be a part of it but I’m not in any rush right now. NXT is so huge and we’re already doing something very special here, so if I was on the main roster right now I’d feel that I was missing out with what’s going on in NXT.

We have Asuka, Nia Jax, Alexa Bliss, Peyton Royce, Billie Kay, Carmella and all these girls who are just waiting to change the division even more than it already has. They’re going to take it to a different level so selfishly I still want to be part of that.”

She added that she does ultimately want to join Sasha Banks, Charlotte and Becky Lynch on the main roster and is very proud of “everything they’re going through to change women’s wrestling.”

Sheamus was involved in an incident with a fan at Sunday’s WWE live event that caused a bit of scene.

There was a commotion when security grabbed the fan and dragged him away. WWE always looks to prosecute fans for these types of incidents.

https://youtu.be/kGPc2VRwX24

Kris Zellner of The Lucha Report notes that new WWE talent Manuel Alfonso Andrade Oropeza (La Sombra) spoke with Miedo Tiempo this past week about signing with WWE.

According to Zellner, La Sombra spoke with the likes of Alberto Del Rio, Kalisto, Oscar Vasquez (Magno) and the original Sin Cara about what they went through in going from Mexico to WWE, all of whom told him that NXT was the best route for him to succeed in the company, not joining the main roster immediately.

La Sombra also said he’s working hard in the ring, but also working hard at learning the English language better. It was noted that Sombra can speak the English language well, but is looking to improve and become an all-around better performer.

Sombra also said he misses his friends, Rush and La Mascara, and hopes that they can one day join him in WWE to reunite Los Ingobernables.

Neville Wants To Face Kevin Owens For The IC Title At WrestleMania

Neville recently spoke with TalkSport.com and said that he’s got his sights on Kevin Owens’ Intercontinental championship. The two competitors have squared off many times since their first encounter a decade ago and Neville wants a shot at taking Owens’ IC title at WrestleMania.

“I’ve got a lot of goals in this business – the current goal is the Intercontinental Championship. I can’t say who’ll be champion by the time Wrestlemania rolls around. If it is Kevin Owens, I’d the love the opportunity to do that.”

I’ve got a lot of history with Kevin. We came up together through the business.I first competed against Kevin when I was 19 years old, in Orpington in Kent. So to do it at Wrestlemania for the Intercontinental championship would really be full circle and it would be the biggest match I could imagine.”

WWE Medical Director Villainized In “Concussion” Movie, What Will The Impact Be?

Sony Pictures seemingly has big plans for the Will Smith movie “Concussion,” as they have it opening on Christmas Day. Smith stars as Dr. Bennet Omalu, the real-life forensic pathologist who made it his mission to publicize his findings about Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy, especially in the brains of American football players. Besides the overall issue having importance to the pro wrestling world, another connection is that WWE Medical Director and Pittsburgh Steelers Team Physician Dr. Joseph Maroon is a character in the film. The script of a seemingly pivotal (but now deleted) scene with the fictionalized version of Maroon (played by Arliss Howard)  leaked via The Hollywood Reporter in September, and it started to get some play on wrestling sites (like the Squared Circle community on Reddit) yesterday.

The short scene, which was reportedly cut due to concerns that it was defamatory (it was sourced from a secondhand account) went like this:

MAROON: We have a serious problem.
DR. ELLIOTT PELLMAN: Dave Duerson killed himself today,
MAROON: He didn’t just kill himself. He shot himself in the chest, Roger. In the heart. He left a note. He wanted his brain donated. To be looked at. For CTE.
NFL COMMISSIONER ROGER GOODELL: Good God. Was he symptomatic?
MAROON: I thought he was just an asshole. For the brain’s last act to not just die, but preserve itself in the act of killing, humans don’t do that. We can’t explain it. This is going to unravel.

You can see why, if there were questions about the accuracy of the dialogue, why it would have been cut, even if the movie has the usual disclaimers about the characters being fictionalized versions of real people.  That said, if Maroon is still a prominent character in the movie, and it looks like he is, then it’s likely he still comes off badly, if just going by the official record. As my friend Keith Harris noted at Cageside Seats in September, this is, after all, the man who, among other things:

  • Attacked the Omalu’s findings of CTE in former Steeler Terry Long by falsely claiming that there were no records of him suffering a concussion during his time on the team.
  • Argued that youth tackle football is safer than skateboarding.
  • Authored a journal article on CTE that didn’t disclose his connections to the NFL, the Steelers, and WWE.

It’s not like this one scene being cut means Maroon is in the clear, public perception-wise, though there are indications that the movie became much less anti-NFL over time and apparently, he’s only in one scene in the final cut. The impact to Maroon himself (and WWE) may not be as significant as originally theorized. The movie will get more of a dialogue going for a while, that’s for sure. Still, will anyone actually se it? Will Smith is a big star, but it’s not the most uplifting and commercial subject matter for Christmas, though a romantic subplot was included seemingly for that very reason. Advance reviews have been mixed so far, with some critics feeling that the movie focuses too much on the personal journey of Smith as Omalu. But Will Smith doing an award bait movie also has its own magnetism. So we may not know until we know.

This all looms as WWE is in the midst of multiple lawsuits modeled after the successful NFL litigation over the concussion issue. That’s something that I’m guessing they don’t want a spotlight on. Especially now that lawyer Konstantine Kyros is pointing out that they simultaneously give money to Chris Nowinski’s Concussion Legacy Foundation (where Paul Levesque serves on the board) while seemingly not directing wrestlers to pledge their brains to the foundation for research.

AJ Styles’ Injury Revealed, Styles Says He’s Suffering From “Overworking Himself”

It appears that the injury that has sidelined former IWGP and TNA Champion AJ Styles from the recent New Japan Pro Wrestling shows is the same one that kept him off of the recent set of Ring Of Honor television tapings.

Styles is reportedly dealing with a lower back issue, one that limited him to a non-wrestling appearance at last month’s ROH TV tapings. He took some time off to heal up for the NJPW Tag League, but has been held out of several days worth of shows. Styles continues to travel to the shows, however, as he has been spotted arriving at the venues by fans.

Styles told New Japan’s bi-monthly magazine that the injury he is dealing with was caused by overworking himself on the independent scene in 2015.

Goldust Comments On Spreading Dusty Rhodes’ Ashes, Extra Security At WWE Events

WCHSTV.com has an article about WWE adding extra security to live events due to recent ISIS threats. The extra security is still going on, as fans at the WWE live event in Huntington, West Virginia on Sunday were asked to arrive early and be prepared to go through multiple stages of security. The doors opened at 3:30pm for a 5pm show and every bag was checked, every person was checked with a metal detector wand and everyone wearing a heavy coat was searched. Another change is any fan with a large purse or backpack has to empty the contents into a clear bag and return their own bag to their car.

– Dustin “Goldust” Runnels posted the following on his official Facebook page:

“We spread pops ashes this past Friday in a place that he loved dearly. Welcome home dad. I love you!”

Jay Lethal Talks About ROH Giving Their Performers Much More Creative Freedom Than WWE

ROH World Champion Jay Lethal was recently interviewed by the Ultimate Torrior for the Bear Hug It Out podcast. Lethal spoke about a number of topics, including Ring of Honor allowing their performers to be creative, drinking with Ric Flair, what he learned from Booker T, Marvel vs DC and more. Here are some highlights:

– Lethal agreed that we are in somewhat of a ‘boom period’ for non-conventional looking wrestlers who have a  strong work rate. He says Ring of Honor has always been about that, with guys like Samoa Joe and Daniel Bryan, but the movement probably went mainstream with CM Punk’s rise in WWE. He likes to think he’s been a part of that movement as well.

– ROH’s partnership with NJPW just ‘makes sense.’ He’s been a huge fan of NJPW’s top stars for a long time and getting to work with them has been a dream come true.

– A big part of ROH’s success is the freedom they allow their performers. With shows like WWE and TNA, most of what you see wrestlers doing on TV is what they’ve been scripted to do.

“In Ring of Honor, they really let you have a lot, and I mean a lot, of creative freedom. I feel like that’s what really brings the best out of a professional wrestler. When it’s an idea that he is currently involved in that was something sparked from his brainchild, he’ll really put his all into it and you can really begin to see what that wrestler can do. But if it’s something that he almost doesn’t agree with, or he’s just kind of ok with and you’re forcing him to do it, that’s when you really see a professional at work. But, sometimes it doesn’t yield the best result.”

Jay Lethal defends the ROH World title against AJ Styles at Final Battle 2015 on December 18th from Philadelphia, PA.

Mick Foley Continues To Vent About What’s Wrong With WWE

Last week, Mick Foley vented his frustration with WWE’s creative direction, noting that his favorite performers are treated like jokes and he’s about to give up on being a fan all together. He has since posted another blog on Facebook getting more specific about what’s wrong and how to fix it.

FINAL RAW FOR FOLEY?

WWE is at a real crossroads. To paraphrase Albert Einstein, who said “the definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over, and expecting different results”. Wrestling historians can argue about when the #AttitudeEra in wrestling officially began. But for me, it will always be at a meeting called by Mr McMahon in the Spring of 1997, where he admitted that had worked for them for so long in the past (I interpreted that to mean one-dimensional characters that tended to be job-related) was no longer working, and that if they were going to survive, the wrestlers themselves were going to have to step up, and help create those dimensions that would establish the emotional bond between the wrestlers and the fans – part of the lifeblood of professional wrestling.

Today’s WWE Superstars (I’m including the women here, since the term “Diva” had its time, and that time is done) are at a distinct disadvantage in some ways. They can’t flip birds, and use the colorful language. They can’t bleed – even when the situation seems ripe for it. Man, Roman Reigns’s life would be so much easier if he could survive vicious assaults the way guys in my era did. But all the blood, the language and the violence paled in comparison to the real secret weapon of the Attitude Era; the FREEDOM TO CREATE…THE FREEDOM TO TRY…THE FREEDOM TO FAIL – the idea that going down swinging (I hope I’m not losing you guys in all the non-baseball playing countries) was almost as important as hitting the ball out of the park – as long as you took your best swings. There’s a difference between playing to win, and playing not to lose: one breeds confidence, the other breeds fear. It’s the difference between cutting the type of promos Stone Cold Steve Austin and Dwayne The Rock Johnson gave, and the cookie-cutter approach all too often employed these days by WWE creative. One style allowed for creativity and emotion. The other calls for memorization and recitation.

I hope I don’t sound like I’m picking on WWE. There is a big part of me that loves this company, and always will. Why else would I be up at 4:15 am, writing things that are likely to banish me deeper and deeper into the WWE doghouse? One of my favorite wrestlers proposed a storyline that would allow me a four of five week storyline that would allow me to did in deep, and swing for the fences – and in the process, maybe advance a few of the super-talented but underutilized athletes on the roster. I would love to do it….but I doubt it’s going to happen. After all, I might want to do something crazy like go out there without a script, and try to create some real emotion – in other words, the type of thing that saved WWE in the late 90’s.

The talent pool has never been deeper. But the creative flow is stagnant…and it’s been stinking for a while. I quoted Einstein to begin this thing. Let me conclude with the immortal words of Owen Heart: “Enough’s enough: it’s time for a change!”

#SockTuesday – the WORLDWIDE #Socktacular begins at the conclusion of WWE Raw and runs for 25 hours at Topropetuesday.com. Go ahead, get that hand-crafted (yes, I draw them all) signed sock for only $19.99, plus shipping…in plenty of time for Christmas.

Kevin Owens On Wanting To Face Brock Lesnar, His Son Cheering John Cena

WWE Intercontinental Champion Kevin Owens recently spoke to the Like Father, Like Son podcast about a number of topics. Below are some of the highlights.

On who he wants at WrestleMania:

“I’ve answered this question a couple of times and my answer is always Brock Lesnar, because I’d just love to be in the ring with him and see what it’s like. There’s nobody quite like Brock Lesnar, as far as pure strength and viciousness and everything. I’d love to see if I could hang with him and see how much I could hurt him. I’d love to get in the ring with The Undertaker one day, too. I feel like that’s a long shot, I guess, because he wrestles on a limited basis and when he does, it’s always a huge deal. But, hopefully I can position myself in the next year or so to be seen as a viable opponent for the Undertaker, because it would be a thrill to be in the ring with him at WrestleMania or anywhere. It can be on a Raw or a live event, I don’t really care. I’d just love to be in the ring with him. I feel like that would be an experience I’d never forget.”

On his son cheering for John Cena:

“I think he was pretty split honestly. He’s always been a big John Cena fan, but all of a sudden he’s against his dad. I think he kind feels like he can’t cheer against me, but at the same time he wants me to do good, so I think he was pretty split down the middle and maybe a bit conflicted. But he’s met John, and he and John known each other. They have this little thing they share together.”
