Rapper Wale Wants To Work For WWE, WWE Studios Picks Up ‘Sleight’ From Sundance Festival

– WWE Studios and Blumhouse Productions have acquired the rights to the movie Sleight, a dramatic thriller that just premiered at the Sundance Film Festival. The Hollywood Reporter has a detailed writeup of the movie and got this synopsis:

“Written by Dillard and Alex Theurer, the film centers on a young street magician who is left to care for his little sister after his mother’s passing and turns to drug dealing in the L.A. party scene to keep a roof over their heads. When he gets into trouble with his supplier, his sister is kidnapped and he is forced to rely on both his sleight of hand and brilliant mind to save her.”

Rapper Wale wants to work for WWE. He was backstage at RAW from Miami and told TMZ, “I actually want to work there, and I don’t know if [Vince and Triple H] heard about good Wale or bad Wale. Or if they even know what a Wale is.”

The Washington D.C. native is a huge fan but thought he got blackballed by WWE after getting into an altercation with a fan at a live show back in 2014. Everything has been smoothed over and he was hanging with Triple H, Vince, The Rock and others in Miami. A WWE rep told TMZ he was never blackballed.

Chris Jericho Speaks On AJ Styles In WWE: “He’s Going To Be Over Big Time”

On episode 216 of his podcast, Jericho Spoke spoke at length about AJ Styles making his debut in WWE at the Royal Rumble. Jericho talked about when he first saw AJ enter the dressing room that day.

“I think the big buzz of the night and one of the big, huge surprises was the debut of AJ Styles in the WWE, which was a huge, huge get for us. We’ve been waiting to have him for a long time,” Jericho said. “One of the hottest free agents in the world today finally in the WWE and it was really cool because in the first night, in the Rumble, I came in the ring. He and [Roman] Reigns were the only ones in there. All three of us just kind of stood there and it was a really good buzz.”

Jericho added, “when he [came] into the dressing room [prior to the Royal Rumble], I felt a little bit, not bad for him, but I understood what he was going through because he shows up there when we’re having the meeting for the Royal Rumble, because he was probably hiding all day or whatever it was, and he comes into the meeting and he knows some people, but he’s standing in the back and kind of being quiet and doesn’t want to step on anybody’s toes.”

Jericho says he was surprised by being booked in a match with Styles the next night on RAW. He had previously stated that it was Vince McMahon’s idea to put them in the ring together on Monday.

“We worked the next night on RAW, which was another surprise. And when it was pitched to me, it was pitched to me one way and then I had an idea to kind of go another way, so, hopefully, if things keep going the way we hope, you might see another Jericho/Styles match, so we’ll see.” Jericho continued, “I was really happy with [the match]. It was fun. It was fun to get in there with a new guy and kind of suss each other out a little bit. And now, it will only get bigger and more intense as we go forward.”

Jericho predicted a bright future for the former TNA World Champion in WWE. Jericho said that in two nights with WWE, more people who know AJ Styles is than they did for the last 15 years.

“I have no doubt that AJ Styles is going to be over big time in the WWE. He already is, just from his fans that he [has] got, but there [are] a lot of people who have never heard of AJ Styles and don’t know who he is or what he brings to the table. And at the Royal Rumble, we let them know a little bit and we let them know a little bit more on RAW. I love that people were like, ‘Jericho said, ‘welcome to the big leagues, kid’. He [has] been in TNA.’ Listen, I agree. He [has] been all over the world, but the WWE is the big leagues! That’s the truth. It’s not being arrogant or being dismissive of his past, but the WWE is the big leagues. It’s where everybody wants to be if you’re in the [professional] wrestling business. I don’t care what you say. Everybody wants to be in the WWE because this is the big leagues. This is the big time. The biggest pro wrestling company in the world, ever, in front of the biggest stage, the biggest crowds, the most worldwide influence. You go from being the biggest worldwide independent star and in two nights, more people know who AJ Styles is right now than they did for the entire 15 years of his career up to it, so that’s not demeaning. That’s the truth, and if you don’t like it, you’re just living in dreamland because nothing beats being in the WWE.”

ROH Parent Company Buys Cable Network

Sinclair Broadcast Group, Inc, the parent company of Ring of Honor, announced in a press release that they are in the process of purchasing The Tennis Channel for $350 million. As part of the deal, they’ve been making arrangements with cable companies that would increase the network’s footprint from 30 million homes to 50 million.

With Sinclair also being behind the American Sports Network (ASN) programming package for broadcast stations, the obvious speciation is that The Tennis Channel could be rebranded as ASN. Since Sinclair also owns ROH, it may or may not be a stretch to think that if that happened, ROH could get a spot on the cable network, even if just as filler programming. That said, since Sinclair has programmed ROH on COMET, their science fiction themed broadcast network for digital subchannels, it wouldn’t even be that strange if ROH ended up on The Tennis Channel in its current form.

As noted by Mike Johnson at PWInsider, this is the first time since WCW was sold that a wrestling promotion will be under the same umbrella as a cable network. If Sinclair were to want to do something with ROH on the Tennis Channel, it opens up possibilities (like live specials) that aren’t available now with ROH airing at all hours on a slew of different local broadcast stations.

Editorial: Daniel Bryan And His Quest For Acceptance In WWE

Even after Daniel Bryan won the WWE championship at WrestleMania 30, it’s as if he’s fighting a losing battle. In New Orleans, the Aberdeen, Washington-native defeated three-fourths of Evolution that evening. Due to CM Punk leaving the company and the WWE Universe wanting Bryan on top, magic happened that night.

On June 9, 2014, the Authority stripped Bryan of the WWE World Heavyweight championship. The belt ended up in the hands of Brock Lesnar, which created the mega-star known as Seth Rollins at WrestleMania 31.

The “C-word” in professional sport known as “concussion” took a toll on Bryan’s health, which is why he hasn’t returned from wrestling since his tag-team match with John Cena at the WWE Smackdown tapings on April 15, 2015.

Since that dark day in pro wrestling, Bryan has fought hard to get back to his wrestling shape. He’s visited countless doctors, physicians and even specialists to try and get cleared.

Bryan has yet to get cleared by WWE’s lead concussion specialist, Dr. Joseph Maroon.

Before the inevitable skepticism of how WWE is handling this situation occurs, here’s the definition of a concussion from the Mayo Clinic:

A concussion is a traumatic brain injury that alters the way your brain functions. Effects are usually temporary but can include headaches and problems with concentration, memory, balance and coordination.

Although concussions usually are caused by a blow to the head, they can also occur when the head and upper body are violently shaken. These injuries can cause a loss of consciousness, but most concussions do not. Because of this, some people have concussions and don’t realize it.

If a concussion is severe enough, that particular athlete will never compete again. Marc Savard, former-NHL All-Star, sustained two concussions in the span of 10 months. That was from 2010-2011. He hasn’t played a game since.

In the wrestling world, Chris Benoit is an infamous case of having too many concussions. It took a toll on his health, and ultimately, his life. Therefore, WWE is extra-critical of concussions and their protocol is one of the more-strict set of rules for return in all of professional athletics.

This is where the frustration of WWE fans, including Bryan, are found.

Since he relinquished the Intercontinental championship, the former-WWE champion has worked extremely hard to get back in a WWE ring. It’s clear that he doesn’t want to go anywhere else, but back to the place that made him a worldwide phenomenon.

Multiple concussion specialists have cleared Bryan. In the last few days, he was cleared by UCLA doctors to return. Even earlier than that, Bryan’s personal doctor said he was “good to go.” Apparently, that’s not enough to convince Vince McMahon and the entire WWE medical team.

At the Royal Rumble, WWE talents were surprised he didn’t show up in the match.

It’s normal to get a second opinion. So, Bryan got one. He also got a third, and presumably a fourth opinion.

Is it obvious yet as to where this is going?

Bryan’s posted videos on social media training to get back into action. He’s tweeted his displeasure and even poked fun at Total Divas, where he was showing his wife, Brie Bella, a wrestling move.

If that’s the only place WWE fans can see Bryan wrestle, then Total Divas is about to get record-breaking ratings.

The Wrestling Observer Newsletter is reporting that the WWE said he won’t be cleared and offered him non-wrestling jobs within the company. With Bryan, it’s not about the brand he’s competing in at this point. He could end up in Ring of Honor when his contract with WWE expires.

Right now, it’s a “wait-and-see” situation with Bryan and the WWE Universe. It’s quite evident that everyone wants to see him return and wrestle again. Not having him on television is still an odd sight to see.

As curiosity increases, so will speculation that WWE doesn’t want Bryan to come back at all. That’s a big claim, but why can’t that question be asked?

What if the WWE doesn’t want Daniel Bryan back?

Samoa Joe & Sami Zayn Heading To The Main Roster Soon, Update On Finn Balor’s Status

Samoa Joe is scheduled to get called up to WWE as soon as the RAW after WrestleMania 32. The original plan was for Joe to spend extended time in NXT but WWE officials have been very impressed with his work thus far and there is a spot specifically designated for him on the main roster.

It should be no surprise that Sami Zayn is also getting called up soon. At Wednesday night’s NXT TV tapings (leading up to WrestleMania weekend), they essentially filmed a farewell angle for Zayn. After being out for a good portion of 2015 due to a shoulder injury, Zayn was a surprise entrant in the Royal Rumble and has a ready-made feud with Kevin Owens waiting for him when he does arrive.

As for NXT Champion Finn Balor, he’s staying put for now. Balor is the top babyface draw in the promotion and WWE is still committed to building the brand around him in the first half of 2016 as NXT continues to sell out arenas across the country.

With Samoa Joe and Sami Zayn joining the main roster soon , NXT won’t be hurting for talent. New blood including Shinsuke Nakamura, Austin Aries, Johnny Gargano, Tommaso Ciampa, Biff Busick and Rich Swann will ensure that NXT remains must-see for the foreseeable future.

Sheamus Injured & Sporting A Cast On His Left Arm

League of Nations member Sheamus, who is celebrating his 38th birthday today, tweeted a photo of himself wearing a cast on his left arm this morning. He wrestled in the main event of Monday’s RAW but was not in the ring at Tuesday’s SmackDown tapings.

In talking with somebody in WWE, he’s not expected to miss too much ring time. He will remain on television while he recovers, much like King Barrett.

Jay Lethal & reDRagon Sign New Deals With ROH

Ring of Honor sent out the following announcement on Thursday:

ROH World Champion Jay Lethal and reDRagon re-sign with Ring of Honor!

(BALTIMORE, MD) – Three cornerstones of Ring of Honor have re-signed! After careful deliberation and review of offers from across the globe, ROH World Champion JAY LETHAL and three-time former ROH World Tag Team Champions BOBBY FISH and KYLE O’REILLY, known collectively as reDRagon, will continue to compete in front of the Best Fans on the Planet!

Jay Lethal used Ring of Honor’s biggest year yet, 2015, to assert himself as the top professional wrestler on the planet. Determined to make the ROH World Championship a truly world title after winning it in June in New York, Lethal has defended his championship in ROH, New Japan Pro Wrestling, and in Europe, including a recent 10-day stretch where he wrestled on three continents! Lethal, who made his ROH debut in 2004, has become one of the most decorated stars in ROH history, entering his 21st consecutive month holding championship gold!

“As the Ring of Honor World Champion, there is no place I would rather be,” said Lethal. “The Best Professional Wrestling on the Planet isn’t a clever marketing moniker – I have re-signed with ROH to prove that I am the best professional wrestler in the world as I defend the Ring of Honor World Championship across the globe.”

Since forming a tag team in 2012, Bobby Fish and Kyle O’Reilly, known collectively as reDRagon, have set a worldwide standard for tag team wrestling. The three-time ROH World Tag Team Champions nicknamed the “Two Man Smash Machine” and “Best Team on God’s Green”, have had unparalleled success in Ring of Honor and New Japan Pro Wrestling as both tag team competitors and singles stars. With their contract renewal, fans of Fish and O’Reilly will be ecstatic to know that reDRagon will continue to compete in New Japan, where they are winners of the Super Jr. Tag Team Tournament and two-time IWGP Jr. Heavyweight Tag Team Champions!

“When you talk about tag team wrestling, War Machine, the Young Bucks, Briscoes, All Night Express, all of the top teams in the world are in or are coming to Ring of Honor,” said Fish. O’Reilly added, “We have our sights set on it all in 2016 – singles and tag team gold. 2016 will be the Year of the Dragon in ROH.”

With three key stars re-signed to the ROH ranks, their sights undoubtedly turn from contract negotiations to Ring of Honor’s 14th Anniversary Pay Per View on Friday February 25, 9 PM EST/6 PM PST! Lethal and O’Reilly have already been signed as part of a huge three-way ROH World Title Defense where Lethal will defend against O’Reilly and Adam Cole!

Details On Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson’s Upcoming Movies

Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson’s next movie, Fast & Furious 8, is set to be filmed in Atlanta, New York City, and Iceland. According to MovieWeb.com, the film will be released on April 14th, 2017 and filming will feature “one of the biggest explosions ever seen” in Iceland.

Johnson is also booked to film Baywatch this year, which will be released on May 19th, 2017. Earlier this month, The Wrestling Observer Newsletter reported The Rock will not be allowed to wrestle at WrestleMania 32 due to contractual obligations he has to the Baywatch movie and their insurance provider.

After those, the former WWE World Heavyweight Champion will film Shazam!, which is set for an April 2019 release.

Big Change To TNA’s Talent Contracts

In recent weeks we’ve seen TNA signing their top stars to new deals, including Jeff Hardy and James Storm. It’s worth noting that the company is taking a very different approach with talent contracts. Dave Meltzer reports in the latest Wrestling Observer Newsletter that talent are signing contracts for guaranteed money that require them to work for indie promotions. Promoters will book talent through the TNA office, with the company getting the booking fees.  TNA wrestlers gets regular paychecks every two weeks and these extra dates are considered part of their guaranteed deals. Meltzer writes:

“If TNA can sign someone for $100,000 per year, and then book them two dates per week at $750 per shot, with a few weekends off here and there, that can be close to $75,000 a year of income coming in. If they can get $1,000 per shot for them, they’ll make virtually the entire contract back.”

This explains how TNA was able to offer a guy like James Storm much more money than he would have gotten wrestling for NXT.

Since TNA is not running any live events and is strictly a TV-based product at this point, the idea is for TNA to increase demand for their talent so they can recoup a good portion of their contract via these outside bookings.

Chris Jericho Reveals Who Booked His RAW Match With AJ Styles

When a fan tweeted on Tuesday thanking Triple H for making the Chris Jericho vs. AJ Styles match on RAW, Jericho replied to correct him. According to Jericho, it was none other than Vince McMahon’s idea to put him in the ring with Styles.

Despite reports of Triple H assuming more control behind-the-scenes in WWE, back in October we reported that Vince McMahon had begun micro-managing the company more. Declining RAW ratings reportedly influenced Vince’s decision to begin overseeing all aspects of the company more than he had been previously.

Konnan Says Airport Incident Is The Real Reason For Lana’s Backstage Heat

On a recent episode of his podcast, Konnan may have shed some light on why Lana reportedly has more heat with the WWE locker room. As we reported earlier, Dave Meltzer said on Monday that “there was another thing that happened with her and I don’t know all the details, but it has added to her legacy so to speak.”

Meltzer didn’t get into specifics of the incident, but on Konnan’s MLW Radio podcast, he claims there was an incident at an airport recently where Lana was yelling at Rusev in front of people. Konnan claimed that Rusev also had some heat on him for not sticking up for himself to her.

Prior to this incident, she had heat with Vince McMahon himself after she exposed her real-life engagement with Rusev, which conflicted with an on-air storyline.

Report: Batista Declines Offer To Appear At WrestleMania 32

Former WWE Superstar Batista was backstage at Sunday’s Royal Rumble PPV from Orlando and met with Vince McMahon about an appearance at WrestleMania 32, according to Ryan Satin over at ProWrestlingSheet.com. Batista reportedly declined Vince’s pitch for a one-time ‘guest appearance’ gig that would not have required him to wrestle a match.

The 2014 Royal Rumble winner has been outspoken about WWE’s creative process since his last run with the company went completely off the rails in part due to the Daniel Bryan YES! Movement. During an interview with HeyUGuys last April, Batista said he’s open to wrestling for WWE one day, but only at live events, since WWE’s scripts “aren’t that great.”

Nikki Bella’s Neck Surgery A Success

Update: Brie Bella tweeted the following about Nikki’s neck surgery this morning:

Earlier: Nikki Bella is undergoing a C6-C7 cervical fusion this morning. The 2-hour procedure will determine the fate of her in-ring career. During an interview with E! Online earlier this week, she explained that she basically has a broken neck, a pretty bad herniated disk. Nikki explained.

“What makes mine a little bit difficult than most people is that I have some disk behind my vertebrae so with a lot of prayers we’re gonna pray that the doctors can get the piece behind my vertebrae with just a bone fusion”

“There is a potential that this is career-ending,” Nikki explained. “We will only know that when I get out of surgery on Wednesday and then basically how the bone heals Wednesday. So that’s been tough but I truly have such hope that I will get to compete in that ring another day, I really do.”

While the Bullet Club members have yet to officially sign with WWE, Mike Johnson told Taz yesterday the word going around is that Gallows & Anderson would be brought directly to the main roster, not NXT.

NXT Champion Finn Balor has a long history with Gallows & Anderson in New Japan Pro Wrestling and has been teasing their arrival since the news broke earlier this month. Comment on this article and tell us if you think Gallows & Anderson would make a good fit in WWE.

– NXT will be holding another round of TV tapings tonight from Full Sail University in Winter Park, Florida. After this past Friday night’s tapings and tonight, WWE will have NXT shows that will bring them up to WrestleMania week and NXT Takeover: Dallas.

– “Road Dogg” BG James revealed on Twitter that Naomi is currently out of action due to injury.

Rusev Breaks Character On Twitter To Refute Rumors (Sort Of)

Last night, using the hashtag #MilkIsForBabies for some reason, Rusev held an impromptu question and answer session on Twitter. Being Rusev’s Twitter account, it was mostly hilarious, favorably comparing Vince McMahon’s hugs to Bayley’s, claiming that a bear no-showed a fight with him in a WWE ring, and more. But it also took a turn when a fan asked him what his favorite moment in WWE was so far:

Then the talk from a few weeks back about him wearing a knee wrap after he said he hadn’t injured his knee:

Then, this morning, after the Q&A, when a fan replied to the “reading lies” tweet with “I’ll trust @davemeltzerWON over a WWE employee who can & will be punished if he doesn’t say exactly what Vince tells him to,” Rusev quoted the reply and said this:

Of course, other than the injury issue (and even then, there are all sorts of degrees of injuries and it’s not as if there aren’t minor knee injuries that someone would be cleared to work on), he didn’t really call out anything specific. On Monday’s edition of Wrestling Observer Radio for F4WOnline.com subscribers, Meltzer said this about Lana when going over The Rock’s segment on Raw (transcript h/t to Keith Harris at Cageside Seats):

By the way, there was another thing that happened with her and I don’t know all the details, but it has added to her legacy so to speak. Something happened where, you know, she said something. It’s probably nothing except everyone is talking about it and essentially she’s got the new round [of heat]. If people had calmed down about her and just said ‘well, OK, she made a mistake,’ well they haven’t.

[…]

I was just told about it tonight after the show and it was actually by someone who had not even watched the show, but had heard the story, just saying that like there’s a new round of heat, everyone likes Rusev and there was something, and, you know, they are just mad at her again.

This continues the recent trend of WWE talent attempting to refute rumors without actually saying anything. Plus, of course, it should go without saying, but Rusev’s choice of words implies that Meltzer just made up whatever story he was theoretically refuting, and even in the event the rumor was false, that’s obviously something Dave would never do. It’s disingenuous to even imply that about someone who’s been reporting on the business for decades.
