Shane McMahon Interview: Training For WM32, His Sons Working For WWE & More

Shane McMahon appeared on The Michael Kay Show on ESPN Radio on Friday afternoon to discuss his surprise return to WWE television, his upcoming Hell in a Cell match against The Undertaker at WrestleMania and much more. Here’s a recap:

  • Shane said he’s known The Undertaker for 20 plus years and their match at WrestleMania 32 is very serious to him. Both of them take an “immense amount of pride” in delivering a WrestleMania classic.
  • He’s been training 3 times per day in preparation for the Hell in a Cell match. Shane actually increased the intensity of his workouts last summer, but did so because he wanted to be in shape so he could go surfing with his sons.
  • The main reason he agreed to compete at WrestleMania is so his sons could see him in action. His sons (ages 12, 9 and 6) will be at AT&T Stadium to watch their dad.
  • Shane hopes at least one of his sons works for WWE one day so they can keep the McMahon legacy going for a 5th generation.
  • Co-host Peter Rosenberg asked Shane if WWE will break the company’s attendance record from WrestleMania III. Shane said “it’s possible” and “they have a shot,” but stopped short of saying yes.
  • When asked if he will take a more prominent role in WWE, Shane said right now, he’s focused on WrestleMania. “Anything after that, we’ll see.”
  • It was not difficult for Shane to keep his surprise a secret because he considers himself to be a very guarded person.
  • Regarding the thunderous ovation he received for his surprise return, Shane said he was humbled and will forever be grateful to the Detroit fans for giving him a memory he’ll cherish forever.
  • The hosts speculated about Shane planning a major bump for the show and joked about him jumping off the giant scoreboard above the field. Shane said he’ll be happy to just survive Hell in a Cell against The Undertaker.
  • Shane said Muhammad Ali, Rocky Johnson and Apollo Creed were the inspirations behind his famous “Shane-O-Mac Shuffle” dance. He also named Bruno Sammartino and “Superstar” Billy Graham as two of his heroes growing up.

Overall, an awesome interview and definitely worth checking out.

TNA Seeking Out New Investors To Get Cash Infused Into The Company

Last night, Mike Johnson broke the news at PWInsider.com that TNA has been actively seeking out new investors for the company as of late, which TNA Executive Vice President,Creative & Talent Relations John Gaburick confirmed. “TNA has been in in strategic partnership talks with several major global media companies and investment firms about the company’s next phase of growth,” adding that “TNA CEO Dixie Carter has talked in recent media interviews about the company’s execution of its 5 year growth plan”  and “It’s a very exciting time for TNA.” Gaburick also confirmed that Dixie Carter had spent a lot of time in New York and Los Angeles as of late for meetings.

On last night’s Wrestling Observer Radio podcast for F4WOnline.com subscribers, Dave Meltzer said that he didn’t have much in the way of details other than that “It’s up for sale.” It wasn’t entirely clear if he just meant shares or trying to sell outright, but he took a fairly negative point of view since it’s not like TNA is in good shape right now and they’re losing their biggest name star, Kurt Angle.

Johnson followed that up this morning with a “frequently asked questions” type of article where he addressed some key elements of the story:

  • Panda Energy, the Carter family’s main company, is no longer financing TNA, and the belief is that they haven’t been since Jeff Jarrett’s minority stake in the company was bought out last year. Panda may still own TNA on paper, but paychecks that used to come from Panda’s Texas offices are now coming out of TNA’s Nashville, Tennessee offices.
  • The newer international TV deals, like with Sony Six in India, are enough to keep the company afloat, but not enough to make TNA a “player,” and Dixie Carter wants TNA to be a “player” in the pro wrestling business. right now.
  • Johnson has heard that interest in buying into the company has been shown by a United Kingdom based group of some kind, with TNA also having meetings in New York and Los Angeles, “including meetings at the Pop network.” It’s not clear if he means Pop was showing interest in buying to TNA or just that some of the meetings could have been routine meetings with Pop.
  • The company isn’t necessarily for sale, with every source specifically telling Johnson that they’re looking for partners, but theoretically, if “the right offer came along,” it’s not like they’d dismiss it out of hand. Of course, TNA has turned down offers to sell in the past, with one (from a group led by Jeff Jarrett and Hermie Sadler) getting close but not going through when Bob Carter insisted that Dixie must continue to have an onscreen role. Jarrett and Sadler pulled out of the deal because they felt that was dictating creative direction as part of the sale.

It doesn’t seem like TNA is in good shape right now, especially if Panda Energy is no longer funding them. That said, they’ve pulled a rabbit out of their hat before, so it wouldn’t be a huge shock if they found a strategic partner.

Chris Jericho Shows Off Black Eye, Says He Had To Cancel Magazine Photo Shoot

Chris Jericho says he had to cancel a photo shoot with a “MAJOR” magazine yesterday after getting kicked in the face on this week’s SmackDown. Jericho teamed with AJ Styles and Mark Henry against The New Day and caught a stiff kick to the face by Kofi Kingston. The video above begins at the moment Jericho sacrificed himself and took the kick in an effort to shield his partner AJ Styles.

Jericho posted the following photo on Saturday morning showing off a nasty shiner.

John Cena Checks In, References The Bullet Club

John Cena checked in on Twitter this morning with his latest inspiration message. It’s hard to not relate his recent tweets to his recovery from shoulder surgery and his efforts to return in time for WrestleMania.

Cena also posted the following on his Instagram page, which is known for puzzling random photos, memes and trolling. For those unaware, Biz Cliz is slang for Bullet Club. Following the WWE debut of former Bullet Club leader AJ Styles, former members Doc Gallows and Karl Anderson are expected to be joining WWE soon. They said farewell to New Japan Pro Wrestling two weeks ago at New Japan Pro Wrestling’s New Beginning show.

Jim Ross Thinks Chances Of WrestleMania In The UK Are “Greater Than Before”

WWE Hall of Famer Jim Ross feels that the implementation of the WWE Network will allow for the company to hold more major events overseas. Ross recently spoke with The Huffington Post to promote his new job as the color commentator of New Japan Pro Wrestling on AXS TV.

When asked if we’ll ever see a WrestleMania held from the United Kingdom, Ross said:

“I don’t have a definite answer, but I have an opinion, and I think as the WWE continues to give more dependence on their network for all the product disruption, I think the chances increase every year that this will happen,” said Ross.

“There’s no doubt that the WWE Wrestlemania event could sell out any stadium in the country. I’m not saying that in an egocentric way, that is my opinion. They did it before with Summerslam years ago and as Gorilla Monsoon would say, the fans were hanging from the rafters!

Previously, the time zone difference and the logistics of the start time have been the main reasons WWE has not held WrestleMania from the UK, one of the company’s strongest foreign markets. Now that WWE controls their own distribution platform, he thinks it could very well happen one day. “I am beginning to believe that there is a greater chance than before it is going to happen,” he said.

SmackDown Viewership On 2/25 Down From Last Week

The February 25th, 2016 episode of WWE SmackDown averaged 2.395 million viewers on the USA Network. This is slightly down from the previous week’s 2.458 million viewers. The show ranked #4 in the top 150 shows on cable for the night. It was #3 last week.

Thursday’s episode of SmackDown was taped on Tuesday in Indianapolis, Indiana. You can read the full results from the taping here.

Triple H To Defend WWE Championship At “March To WrestleMania” WWE Network Special

UPDATE: WWE deleted the article right as I was posting this one. Beloved Twitter personality @TheFrayMovement tweeted screen grabs of the article, though:

https://twitter.com/TheFrayMovement/status/703312257820692480

ORIGINAL ARTICLE:

Earlier today, WWE.com posted the official announcement (sort of, t’s on the site but I cant find where it’s supposed to be linked for) of the March 12th March to WrestleMania special that will air live on WWE Network from the Ricoh Coliseum in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. It wasn’t a secret that the show was coming, but WWE hadn’t really acknowledged it until now.

The big news coming out of the announcement is that not only is Brock Lesnar wrestling on the show as expected, but Triple H will be as well, and he’ll be defending the WWE World Heavyweight Championship there for the first time since winning it at the Royal Rumble. His challenger has not been announced as of yet.

Triple H will also be wrestling 13 days later at Madison Square Garden, where, as we noted yesterday, the lineup has been changed to include he and Sheamus vs. Roman Reigns and Dean Ambrose as the main even (Kevin Owens vs. A.J. Styles was also added). Since Triple H transitioned into a part time role as a wrestler several years ago, he’ll sometimes return at a major market house show to shake potential ring rust off, and it looks like he’s doing that again here.

Past house show return matches even included the blow-off to Triple H’s feud with Sheamus, as he was transitioning to feuding with The Undertaker for WrestleMania so their program was forgotten on TV.

Shane McMahon & The Undertaker Advertised For Two Upcoming RAWs

After making his return to WWE television on 2/27, Shane McMahon’s next RAW appearance has been revealed. Shane-o Mac is being advertised for the March 7th episode of RAW, which takes place in Chicago.

While Shane has yet to come face-to-face with his WrestleMania opponent, it’s likely that he will have words with The Undertaker on the 3/14 episode of RAW in Pittsburgh. On Friday, The CONSOL Energy Center announced that both men are booked for the show on March 14th.

The Dead Man is also booked to appear on this coming Monday’s RAW. Last week’s RAW viewership spiked to 4.2 million viewers in the first hour for McMahon’s return to television.

Davey Richards Out For Most Of 2016, TNA Returning To Orlando

– TNA is set to return to Orlando, Florida next month for another round of Impact Wrestling and One Night Only PPV tapings, according to PWInsider. While the company has yet to announce anything, the tapings will take place from Universal Studios in Orlando from Saturday, March 12 through Tuesday, March 15th. This will be TNA’s first tapings in Orlando since last July.

– Former TNA tag team champion Davey Richards underwent reconstructive knee surgery last week to repair a torn ACL. The Wrestling Observer notes that he will be out for most of 2016 (some time between August-November).

Austin: WWE Needs To Turn Roman Reigns Heel Before People Will Love Him

Steve Austin has noticed fans’ reactions to Roman Reigns heading into WrestleMania 32, and says WWE needs to make some changes. On the latest episode of The Steve Austin Show, the WWE Hall of Famer said he feels Vince is sticking with Reigns’ current babyface push for too long.

“I predicted this all along. The kid has got to have a heel run before he’s going to be universally loved because that’s just the way that I see it,” Austin explained, “I’ve always said that I think the guy needs to be a heel first, but, nonetheless, that’s not my call. That’s the booking committee’s call or Vince [McMahon]’s call….That’s what’s going to make it fun again because everybody is going to be so onboard with booing him! I’m telling you, once he goes through that process, whether that takes one year, two years, [or] whatever, then, they’re going to end up loving the guy.

“To me, it’s like Vince chose this guy and he’s sticking with him. Whatever the fans think, whether it’s the smart marks, or the casual fans, or the fervent fans, I don’t know. He’s sticking with this guy and I don’t know. He’s not going to pick another guy because he has so much invested in this guy, so he [has] got to keep riding him, but he could ride him in a different direction, but you can’t back off the gas pedal. Babyface or heel, you’ve got to keep the pedal to the metal with this guy because if you don’t, he will become an also-ran immediately.”

Austin said that he thinks Reigns is a “good dude” and has the support of the locker room. Austin explained that he doesn’t think the fans’ negative reactions are Reigns’ fault.

“I talk to Roman Reigns every time I go to do a podcast [for the WWE Network]. [The] dude’s a great guy. Everybody on the roster supports that guy because he’s a good dude, so everybody loves him,” said The Texas Rattlesnake. “So whatever’s happening ain’t his fault. It’s just his personality, his looks, [and] the way he [has] been pushed. He’s a tremendous cat but sometimes these things, [in] the business of pro wrestling, you’ve got to walk through that fire first and I still think that’s what he’s going to have to do. But, hey, if Vince can get that kid over as a monster baby, more power to him and swig of beer to Roman Reigns for doing so, but that remains to be seen.”

You can listen to Austin’s entire podcast here.

Steve Austin On Which WWE Superstars Are Stepping Up, Brock Lesnar & More

WWE Hall of Famer “Stone Cold” Steve Austin recently spoke to Rolling Stone to promote WrestleMania 32. Here are some highlights:

– Austin acknowledged that it will be hard for WWE to sell out AT&T Stadium. As noted earlier this week, WWE has sold less than 70,000 tickets. Austin said the “sells itself” to some degree, but you still need main event players in top storylines.

– Regarding who has stepped up in WWE, Austin praised Kevin Owens and said Neville. Austin said he would like to see more involvement from Brock Lesnar on RAW so he can connect with the crowd in a more meaningful way.

– Austin talked about his Broken Skull IPA beer, which is now available in California from the El Segundo Brewing Company.

– When asked about what he misses most about wrestling, Austin said, “Goddang, I’ll tell you what. When you walk out, and that f*cking glass breaks, and those motherfuckers jump out of their seats, there ain’t nothin’ like that in the world. As drunk as I ever got, nothing touches that feeling. In my life, what replaces that or comes close? Nothing.”

First Look At The Rock Filming Baywatch

Production is underway for Baywatch, the big screen adaptation of the wildly popular 1990’s lifeguard adventure series. The plot focuses on a straight-laced lifeguard (The Rock) who is forced to team up with a young hothead (Zac Efron) in order to save their beach from environmental destruction at the hands of an oil tycoon.

Baywatch is begin produced by Paramount Pictures and hits theaters theaters May 19, 2017.

WWE Comments On Shane McMahon’s Official Role With The Company

Following Shane McMahon’s return to WWE television this past week on RAW, there’s been a lot of talk about whether or not he will be returning to a management position with the company.

The New York Post has published an article looking at what Shane could bring to the WWE Corporate after gaining outside executive experience since leaving WWE back in 2010. A source told the Post, “Shane’s digital, international and a helluva performer. I’ve never heard anyone who’s worked with him say a bad word about him.”

Sounds like a great fit for WWE, which is looking to expand the WWE Network’s reach both in the United States and abroad. A WWE spokesperson, however, told the Post that for now, Shane is just “playing a character on a TV show.”

Chris Harrington, who covers the financial side of pro wrestling for investment site Seeking Alpha, called Shane’s possible return to WWE executive team “a tantalizing puzzle piece” in the company’s efforts to break into China.

“He has spent years focused on the issue of how do you generate real revenue with Chinese OTT media,” Harrington wrote. “That’s a topic where WWE needs an expert.”

– Natalya posted the following photo on Instagram earlier this week looking back on her time on the road with husband Tyson Kidd. Tyson had major neck surgery last year and from all accounts, he was lucky to survive the injury.

Finn Balor On What Sets WWE & NXT Apart From All Other Promotions

NXT Champion Finn Balor recently appeared on PROGRESS Wrestling’s PROGCast and spoke about British wrestling, NXT and more. The 34-year-old spoke about the ‘European connection’ at the WWE Performance Center, including trainers William Regal and Robbie Brookside. Balor put Brookside over in a big way, stressing his contributions to the developmental process.

“Whoever made the decision to bring in Robbie Brookside is a very, very smart man because they’re thinking long term. Long term. I cannot put over Robbie Brookside enough. Obviously his knowledge for the business is unbelievable, but just having him there as a person at the Performance Center, his positivity.”

He continued joked: “Every morning I walk in, you might be, y’know down in the dumps and Robbie Brookside is there greeting you with a smile, you can’t help but smile, it’s infectious. I really am very lucky to have Robbie there.”

Balor has wrestled all around the world, but spent significant time in Japan prior to signing with WWE.  Balor said he was completely caught off guard by how different the WWE Styles is to that in Japan.  “I didn’t think there was going to be a difference. I thought: ‘Yeah, I’ll just turn up, it’ll be fine. I’ll just do my thing, just do it – just get out there, start throwing chops, throwing kicks left, right and centre and it’ll be grand. I’ll shoot it.’ It is totally different.”

WWE did not become the global juggernaut it is without putting forward a polished, professional product. Balor quickly learned that the WWE style involves telling a story and playing to the crowd, more so than any other promotion out there. “I think it is different for the better and it has made me a more complete talent, it has made me a more complete performer and very much more aware of what I’m doing in the ring than I was before,” he said.

Before I was doing things for myself – but now I’m doing it for the audience because essentially, this is for the audience’s consumption, and if they can’t see what I’m doing, what’s the point in doing it? So I’m going to try and get the very most out of everything I do in the ring, if I’m going to do it.”

WrestleMania Ticket Sales, Latest From John Cena, Lesnar At Post-WM32 RAW

– With less than 6 weeks to go until WrestleMania 32, WWE is going to have a very difficult time selling out AT&T Stadium and drawing more than 100,000 fans to the venue. On the latest episode of Wrestling Observer Radio, Dave Meltzer noted that WWE has sold a lot of tickets for the show – but far less than 70,000.

It’s highly unlikely they will sell another 20,000+ by showtime, so it’s going to be an uphill battle breaking the company’s [inflated] WrestleMania 3 attendance record of 93,173.

– Brock Lesnar is now being advertised for the April 4th post-WrestleMania edition of WWE RAW from Dallas, Texas.

– Here’s the latest from John Cena, who last week said he’s attempting to “defy science” with his recovery from surgery:
