WWE Rebranding The Divas Division, New Women’s Championship Commissioned

Say goodbye to WWE’s “Divas” division and the purple butterfly belt.

WWE finally caved and the decision has been made to rebrand Divas division as the Women’s division. The official announcement will be made on Monday’s WWE RAW from Dallas, the night after WrestleMania. The news was first reported by PWInsider and we’ve since verified it independently.

A new WWE Women’s Championship belt has already commissioned. From what we’ve been told, the new Women’s Championship bares a strong similarity to the WWE World Heavyweight championship belt – but it’s mounted on a white leather strap and is smaller.

Charlotte will defend her Divas Championship against Sasha Banks and Becky Lynch this Sunday. We’ll find out on Sunday night which of the three competitors will have the honor of retiring the Divas Championship and ushering in the new era of Women’s wrestling in WWE.

DDP Speaks On The Freebirds In The HOF, Eric Bischoff’s Reaction To Kimberly In Playboy

Diamond Dallas Page was recently a guest on The Steve Austin Show, where Stone Cold Steve Austin asked DDP about The Fabulous Freebirds being inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame on Saturday. Page made his WCW debut in 1991 as The Freedbirds’ manager.

“When I think of the Birds, because when I came in to WCW, you remember, bro, I got to manage the latest Freebirds, it was always Michael P.S. Hayes and Jimmy ‘Jam’ Garvin, so I was really happy to see Jimmy go in the [WWE] Hall Of Fame too because he was one hell of a talent. And those guys together, they were so much fun. They taught me so much on the road,” DDP said

“Hayes [and] those guys could drink,” the former WCW World Heavyweight Champion continued, “like, you know I come from the nightclub business, and I drank my fair share of a lot of booze, but when you hung out with those guys, it went to a different level.”

Austin and Page also looked back at what may have been DDP’s biggest feud in WCW with the late ‘Macho Man’ Randy Savage. Page revealed how his ex-wife Kimberly’s nude modelling lead to Page getting a push from WCW creative into a storyline with Savage on TV.

“At the time, Kimberly had done that Celebrity Nudes. She was the first Playboy chick [from the world of professional wrestling]. What they did was they shot this spread with her and they asked me to be in it! Now, I’m bottom of the middle of the card at the time. You know me, bro. If I get the opportunity to do something that’s going to shock some people, I’m going to go with it, so I went and I shot this thing with her where I’m putting on my boots [and] she’s slipping into something,” Page explained, “and they loved the photoshoot so much they asked us to come back and shoot again because they were going to give her a six-page spread. So I tell [Eric] Bischoff right before this goes down and he’s like, ‘are you crazy? You’ve got a morality clause in your contract. They can fire you!’ I go, ‘well, then, they fire me! Maybe Vince will do something with it!’ And then, it sort of just went away and that came back as the angle that Randy Savage brought out the Playboy with Liz spray painted over Kim’s nipples and butt and then she came out all spray painted nWo! And then, boom, that starts her angle with Savage.”

AJ Styles Interview: Not Using Styles Clash In WWE, Nakamura’s Debut & More

AJ Styles spoke with Nick Schwartz of Fox Sports this week promote WrestleMania. Many fans have wondered why Styles is not using Styles Clash as his finisher in WWE. There’s been speculation that the move was formally banned for being too dangerous, but AJ sets the record straight:

“I think that a lot of people think the Styles Clash is banned, you can’t do that anymore,” he said. “It’s not necessarily that, there’s some guys that are just too big to get that in. The roster of the WWE is a big roster, so you have to improvise – but part of being an entertainer is that you’ve got to be able to adapt to every situation and be able to hit stuff on guys or are bigger than you or smaller than you. For me, it’s not that big of a deal.”

This Friday night at NXT Takeover: Dallas, Shinsuke Nakamura makes his NXT debut against Sami Zayn. Styles worked with Nakamura in New Japan Pro Wrestling, with the two of them putting on a Match of the Year contender back at WrestleKingdom on January 4th. Styles says Nakamura is going to make a huge impact when he arrives and people should not underestimate him because of his flashy persona.

“Shinsuke Nakamura is probably one of the best wrestlers I’ve ever been in the ring with. He’s very unorthodox. Everything he does is with knockout power. He’s a guy who is very flamboyant so don’t let his Michael Jackson antics fool you, this guy is deadly. He will knock you out. [He’s a] great athlete, can’t say enough great things about him. I know personally how good he is.”

As for his top goal in WWE, AJ said of course he wants to main event WrestleMania one day, but the thing he wants most is respect from his peers.

AJ Styles makes his WrestleMania debut this Sunday against Chris Jericho.

Linda McMahon Speaks On Hogan-WWE, Says Donald Trump’s Persona Resonates With WWE Fans

Linda McMahon, who worked in high-ranking positions in WWE from 1980 to 2009, says she could “never say never” regarding Hulk Hogan returning to the company. In an interview with Katie Couric for Yahoo News, McMahon also revealed that she did follow the Hulk Hogan vs. Gawker trial and was on Hogan’s side.

“I followed it some because he’s been a part of WWE for quite some time. I don’t think anyone had the right to take that private tape and put it out. I thought Gawker was wrong in doing that. He said some deplorable things, and it cost him his job in WWE,” said McMahon.

McMahon, who left WWE in 2009 to pursue a career in politics, was also asked about Donald Trump’s presidential campaign. Donald Trump has made several appearances for WWE over the years and is in their Hall of Fame. She stopped short of endorsing Trump, but spoke highly of him and claimed that his persona resonates with WWE fans.

“The persona of Donald Trump has resonated with [WWE fans.] Maybe their business isn’t growing, maybe they have kids who are graduating who can’t get jobs. All of those things that you hear I think resonate not only with some WWE fans, but across really the specter,” Linda said.

“He was a great partner, a wonderful promoter,” she said of her time working with Trump in WWE. “He really greased the wheels. We got to know him personally. He’s very loyal, he’s a patriot, he hires smart people around him. He did exactly what he said he would do.”

You can watch Linda’s entire interview on Yahoo.com.

Stephanie ESPN Interview: Being The Boss’ Daughter, Divas Revolution & More

Stephanie McMahon’s appearance on ESPN’s “Face to Face with Hannah Storm” show on Tuesday night. Regarding the challenges she’s faced in a male-dominated business, Stephanie said she also dealt with challenges being the boss’s daughter. She’s constantly had to prove herself, but doesn’t mind that at all and doesn’t want anything handed to her. She works very hard and tries to earn people’s respect every single day.

Stephanie was also asked about women in sports getting more recognition. She mentioned the “#GiveDivasaChance” hashtag that fans had trending for three days last year. Today’s WWE fans want to see more than eye candy and that’s why WWE listened and put the spotlight on the Divas Revolution. Women’s sports is on the rise and it was time for WWE to get with the times.

Storm also asked about WrestleMania 32 coming to AT&T Stadium. Stephanie revealed that Dallas Cowboys executive Charlotte Jones Anderson came and gave a big pitch to WWE. Vince was so impressed that he approved the pitch right on the spot.

Triple H Talks About Roman Reigns Being Rejected By Fans

Roman Reigns putting life and limb on the line – right before fans began chanting, “You Still Suck”

WWE World Heavyweight Champion Triple H spoke with CBSSports.com this week to promote this Sunday’s WrestleMania 32 event at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas. Topics discussed include his WrestleMania XII debut against The Ultimate Warrior, staying in shape with Joe DeFranco and more. Perhaps the most newsworthy quotes came when Triple H addressed his challenger this Sunday, Roman Reigns.

“He’s a great kid, and I’m really happy for his success and how well he’s done,” Triple H said. said. “But it’s a tough road and a long road. That success has come fast. Sometimes that can be a blessing and sometimes it can be a curse. So I think he’s done the best that he can with it.”

Despite the fact that Reigns has been pushed as the “new face of the company” for well over a year, fans just aren’t buying it. WWE is not blind to this reality and Triple H shared his insight about why Reigns isn’t catching on.

“You know, the hardest thing in this business to do now is, as a character, to either make everyone love you or everyone hate you,” he said with a laugh. “The world is a divided place in politics, in music and everything. Choices now, and people’s opinions, are front and center more than ever. The Internet makes that readily available to everybody. They know all of the machinations of everything and the behind-the-scenes of everything, you know.

“It used to be that the good guy was the guy that didn’t cheat, you know what I mean? It was just very simple. The world has changed. I think [Reigns has] done a phenomenal job. He’s, you know, from a behind-the-scenes standpoint, a great human being. I’m really happy for his success, as I am for all of them.”

Comment on this article and tell us if you agree with Triple H’s explanation.

Jim Ross Blogs About Reigns’ Struggle To Get Over, A Heavy Question Headed Into WrestleMania

WWE Hall of Famer Jim Ross has updated his blog, which you can read in its entirety over at JRsBarBQ.com. Naturally, this installment focused on last night’s “marathon” episode of RAW, which JR says “seemed to lack some spark/sizzle” considering it was the go-home show before WrestleMania.

JR commented on Shane & Undertaker’s opening segment, which saw Shane take his life in his hands by diving off the top rope and crashing down on The Undertaker on the announcer’s table at ringside. JR expects them to deliver on Sunday night, but ponders how much higher the stakes would be if Taker was still undefeated at WrestleMania.

As Roman Reigns climbs his uphill battle for fan acceptance, JR continues to anticipate a double turn from Reigns and Triple H in the WWE title match. “Getting the audience to cheer Roman Reigns isn’t simply going to happen any time soon so why continue to go against the grain?” he ponders.

Regarding Eva Marie’s tepid reaction on RAW, JR is wondering if she’s getting heel heat or simply “go away” heat. He thinks Eva deserves some patience, but sees potential for her to be a “special personality” if handled properly.

The buildup for WrestleMania has certainly been better in years past, and this quote from JR sums up the major theme heading into Sunday:

“This will likely be known as the Wrestlemania that injuries destroyed. Or, should it be known as the Wrestlemania that was laden with injuries and creative wasn’t able to bail them out?”

It’s another great blog that you should absolutely check out at JRsBarBQ.com.

Renee Young: “Definitely” Open To Getting In The Ring

Renee Young recently spoke with Jim Varsallone of The Miami Herald to promote WrestleMania 32. Here are the highlights. She spoke about a number of topics, including her popular “Unfiltered” show on the WWE Network.

Renee said the show gave her a chance to show WWE a side of her personality that isn’t shown on television. She’s also found that the show has allowed stars like Randy Orton, Kevin Owens and Seth Rollins to do the same. The show will begin shooting again in the near future and there are plans to overhaul the whole format, including new producers. The hope is to “expand” Unfiltered and “make it feel like a real TV show.”

She also commented on the possibility of stepping in the ring:

“I’d definitely be open to the idea of doing a storyline in some capacity. I think it would be so fun to jump in there and do something like that. If that opportunity came along, I would go with it, but I think WWE has other things in mind for me.”

AJ Styles Interview: Skipping NXT, Kevin Owens, Reigns-Hunter

This week AJ Styles sat down for an interview with Digital Spy to promote WrestleMania 32. Here are some highlights of what he said about:

The WWE Title picture & WrestleMania main event:

“I think that Roman Reigns is the guy for the job right now. I think him and Triple H are going to tear it up at WrestleMania. It’s a very exciting match that I think a lot of people wanna see.”

Not going to NXT:

“I wasn’t able to make that decision. But I’m very happy to be on the main roster…(Finn Balor) the perfect guy [to be holding the belt]. And he’s doing a wonderful job. He’s not the only reason NXT is doing so well but he’s definitely a big part of it.”

Facing Kevin Owens again:

“Then I go after a title and if it’s around Owens’s waist then I’m going to go after it. Kevin and I have wrestled before so we know each other very well, so it’s easy for us to get in the ring and do great things.”

AJ will be making his Wrestlemania debut against Christ Jericho this Sunday.

Bayley Hypes NXT Takeover, Talks About Charlotte-Sasha-Becky Success

NXT Women’s Champion Bayley appeared on Busted Open Nation this week and spoke to Doug & Dave about Friday’s NXT Takeover: Dallas special, Wrestlemania 32 and much more. Here are the highlights:

TakeOver: Dallas:

“We were in San Jose last year in front of a crowd of 5,000, just kind of trying it out WrestleMania weekend. It was such a success that I remember being in a tag match that night and it’s my hometown crowd, and then watching Charlotte and Sasha in a women’s title match and I was like, ‘Man, I need to be in that match’. I wanted to be in a championship match so now, one year later, that NXT has just – we’ve grown so much in this past year and now we have our own pay-per-view, our own TakeOver on the WWE Network, to kick off WrestleMania weekend. It’s huge because we’re going to start the weekend hot and just really set the bar just like we tried to in Brooklyn, same as SummerSlam weekend. But now I’m in this spot, the spot that I wanted to be and I told myself that’s where I wanted to be. I wanted to be in the championship picture and now I’m the champion, so I really need to prove to myself that this is where I belong.”

Working With Sasha Banks:

“I still get choked up about it, thinking about Brooklyn and then thinking about the Iron Man match. No matter what happens – if I were to lose my title, if I retain my title, if Sasha loses her match at WrestleMania – anything that we do within the next five years, no matter what, we’ll always be a part of history because of TakeOver: Respect and it’s really cool.”

Seeing The Other 3 “Horsewomen” Working Together at WrestleMania:

“I love NXT. It’s been an honor and a privilege traveling the world with them. We’re such a family here, but my ultimate goal is definitely to be up there and seeing them in a match at WrestleMania when you’re thinking last year, we were just watching it together on the floor of WrestleMania. I just saw a picture of AT&T Stadium and they’re, like, right front and center and it’s just amazing what a year does and what hard work and dedication does. It makes me so proud, like I feel like I’m part of the show. But, I know that after the end of the show, I’m just going to go back to my hotel and just think, ‘What can I do to be there next year?’”

You can find more from news articles at BustedOpenNation.com and tune into Busted Open Mondays, Tuesdays and Fridays from 2-4pm ET onSiriusXM Rush 93 and on the SiriusXM App on your smartphone.

Make sure you tune into Busted Open Wrestlemania Sunday when they cover the Showcase of the Immortals live from Dallas, Texas from 12 to 2pm ET for the Pre-Show and 11pm to 1am ET for the Post-Show.

Roman Reigns: WWE Is “A Kids Show,” He’s Not In Wrestling “For The Grown Men”

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7CQyN0VPi0A

Yesterday, the Orlando Sentinel published an interview with Roman Reigns that well-known pro wrestling writer and radio show host Brian Fritz had conducted. Like his Kingston Whig-Standard interview that we covered over the weekend, the most controversial comments will probably be those about the fans that boo him.

When asked why he thinks he’s still getting such a strong negative reaction from WWE crowds, Reigns has some theories (emphasis mine):

“I think there’s a few different reasons why. You could name a bunch of them. I don’t think we could actually put a finger on one and say this is the reason why. Typically if you hear the boos, it generally is grown men my age and I’m not really in this business for the grown men. (laughs) I’m in this business for the families. That’s what we are; we’re a PG product. We’re a family-based product. We’re here to entertain families and give them enjoyment. If you’re a 30-year-old man and you want to flip me off at a kids show, then, hey, like I said, you paid your money but just be careful because you could get kicked out.”

Despite the fact that he’s been pushed to the moon and positioned as “the next John Cena,” the majority fans just aren’t taking to his act the way WWE has hoped. When asked if he’s bothered by fans rejecting him as the new face of the company, he gave another head-scratching reaction.

“There’s nothing to complain about as far as reaction, because we’re storytelling here and not everybody is going to have the same opinion about the story,” Reigns said. “My only concern is you’re setting a bad example. I’ve seen grown men flip me off and there were children right there. There’s a guy who got kicked out of one of the shows because I’m pretty sure he was drunk. He’s going nuts, screaming and cussing, acting like a fool when there’s children right next to him. That’s something we have to keep in mind.

A lot of times, these pay-per-views and Monday Night Raws, they’re on school nights so it is a lot more of a grown-up feel. I think if you pick and choose and just think with logic, everything will be all right. That’s just one thing, you have to be concerned with the example we’re setting. At a show, I’m not the only role model. These kids are sitting next to these other grown-ups and they’re seeing how these people act. That’s just a reflection of what they see and they probably act the same way.”

In context, it’s honestly not an unfair comment, albeit one seemingly designed to pivot from Fritz’s actual question. The whole interview is worth reading, as he also gives the non-storyline reason for his nasal surgery (deviated septum from bad allergies, worsened by all of the travel he does).

Global Cruiserweight Series Being Taped In June

According to PWInsider.com the current plan for the WWE’s Global Cruiserweight Series tournament is to tape the entire tournament the week of 6/20 at Full Sail in Winter Park, Florida. It is currently slated to tape in over 5 days.

Competitors for the 32 Man tournament will begin to be revealed via qualifying matches held at EVOLVE, PROGRESS Wrestling and Revolution Pro next month and beyond.  WWE will also reveal talents via Internet and social media platforms as a way to familiarize viewers with performers who have not previously been on the WWE stage.

The series will debut this July for a 10 episode run on the WWE Network.  In an interview with PWInsider.com, Triple H noted that the hope is for the Series to become a recurring event for WWE.

NXT Hits The Road Again In May

It looks like popular NXT brand will be hitting the road again in May. Triple H announced on his twitter that the brand will be touring in May, with 6 different shows in the lower Midwest and West coast. While fans in Florida have had plenty of chances to see NXT shows, this is a rare chance for the rest of the country to see the popular brand live. Tickets for all 6 shows will go on sale Friday April 8, 2016 at 10 am local time.
