CM Punk: WWE Treats Wrestlers Like ‘Indentured Servants’

CM Punk is doing the media rounds today to promote his upcoming UFC debut against Mickey Gall at UFC 203 on September 10th from Cleveland, Ohio. During an appearance on Colin Cowherd’s The Herd radio show, Punk accused WWE of treating their talent like “indentured servants” and running them into the ground.

Punk revealed that he’s been interested in becoming a professional MMA fighter for many years and and actually gave it serious consideration back in 2011 before ultimately re-signing with WWE. Even though Superstars put their bodies on the line for the company and the fans, WWE does not provide them with health insurance or assist with travel expenses.

Head over to MMANews.com for much more on CM Punk’s UFC debut and Brock Lesnar’s return to the Octagon on July 9th.

Ryback Undergoing Multiple Surgeries, Update On His WWE Status

During his time away from WWE television, Ryback is undergoing ear, nose and throat surgery to address hearing and breathing issues that have affected him for many years. The big guy tweeted on Monday afternoon:

Later in the day, he followed up with a post-op photo, noting that he was only able to have the ear portion of the surgery done yesterday and will need an additional procedure for the nose and throat portion.

The Big Guy’s WWE contract expires this summer and we’ve heard that there’s been virtually no progress in his contractual dispute. Unless they come to a resolution soon, we could see Ryback following in the footsteps of Cody Rhodes on the independent circuit.

The SmackDown brand has a live event scheduled for Sunday, September 25th from State College, PA. This is the same night as the RAW-exclusive Clash of Champions PPV from Indianapolis, IN.

Of course, the lineup is subject to change and we will once again give the disclaimer that it’s unlikely that WWE would spoil the draft results in this way, but the following Superstars are advertised for that Sunday night SmackDown live event:

  • The New Day
  • The Miz
  • Women’s Champion Charlotte
  • Kevin Owens
  • Sasha Banks
  • Paige

Stephanie Says WWE Isn’t “Supporting” Brock’s UFC Fight, Says Fighters Lose Credibility After Losing

Stephanie McMahon says Brock Lesnar is in one of the most unique positions of any WWE star. In an interview with Business Insider conducted last week at the Cannes Lions festival in France, Stephanie talked about Lesnar returning to the UFC octagon while still under contract with WWE.

Stephanie says the UFC and WWE are not competitors because one is competitive sport and one is entertainment. Stephanie says WWE is more like a Hollywood production than a sport, and WWE has an advantage as far as television goes because they can script their protagonists and antagonists.

“UFC, they can make a big star but the second that person loses, they lose credibility, and how do you continue to make that star rise?” Stephanie said. “So I think [WWE has] the best of both worlds and the opportunity to tell the stories in the way we want to tell them.”

Stephanie claims Brock fighting for UFC isn’t a promotional opportunity for WWE, and the company isn’t necessarily “supporting” the fight.

“In Brock Lesnar’s case it was really a special case that we are allowing him to do this fight [against Mark Hunt on July 9]. But like you said it’s not really a cross-promotional opportunity, but we are allowing him to participate in that fight,” Stephanie said. “We are not supporting the fight necessarily but, again, it’s not a competitor to us and the more that our superstars, that’s how we refer to our talent, the more they do outside of WWE, the more awareness it generates and the broader the audience can be that is then brought back into our properties. So we recognize the value of that.”

Paul Heyman Wants To Debate Donald Trump Next Month In The UK

Paul Heyman is doing the media rounds this week to promote Brock Lesnar on the cover of WWE 2K17 and as always, delivered a few quotes that make you do a double-take.

Heyman is headed to the UK next month for his first-ever tour of one man shows titled, An Evening With Paul Heyman. With Donald Trump making international headlines by appearing in Scotland the day after the big Brexit vote, Heyman wants to debate the Presidential candidate 1-on-1.

Below are tweets from Heyman and audio from Capital FM radio:

Update On Brand Split Authority Figures & Titles, Fans Engaged At RAW (Video)

– Monday’s RAW gave us a few glimpses at what to expect once the WWE Draft and subsequent brand split take place in just a matter of weeks. WWE recently brought back several “General Managers” who have run RAW and SmackDown in the past, but we now know that the new authority figures will be referred to as Chief Operating Officers (COO’s).

Additionally, we got another indication that WWE will in fact be re-introducing a second world championship next month. WWE World Heavyweight Champion Dean Ambrose was referred to as simply the WWE Champion by announcers and graphics on the show, so it looks like the World Heavyweight championship could be making a return soon.

– As seen below, two members of the WWE Universe got engaged at last night’s RAW in Tampa:

Total Bellas: Premiere Date, New Info

E! SETS PREMIERE DATE FOR NEW SERIES “TOTAL BELLAS”

WWE Superstars The Bella Twins(TM), John Cena(R) and Daniel Bryan(R) Move In Under One Roof in New Spin-Off Series Premiering Wednesday, October 5 at 8:00pm ET/PT

LOS ANGELES, CA – June 27, 2016 – Two’s company, three’s a crowd, and these four – are just too much to handle. E! Entertainment exposes the Raw and real lives of WWE(R) Superstars Nikki and Brie Bella when “Total Bellas,” spin-off of E!’s mega-hit series “Total Divas,” premieres Wednesday, October 5 at 8:00pm ET/PT. The six, one-hour episodes will give viewers an exclusive, intimate look into the VIP lives of the Bellas and their fellas, John Cena and Daniel Bryan, as the four distinctly unique and comical personalities coexist under one roof for the first time.

Although these twins share the same genes, they will never share the same jeans as living together was more tolerable when they just shared a womb. The free-spirited, vegan-loving, live-and-let-live lifestyle of Brie and Bryan has always clashed with the fancy panache of the designer handbag-loving Nikki and the meticulously organized tendencies of John. However, when the four world-renowned WWE Superstars move in under one roof, the comical clash of titans rings all throughout the suburbs of Tampa, FL.

The series kicks-off with Nikki and John being sidelined by injuries and Daniel’s recent retirement from the ring. This docu-series will follow the odd-couple relationships of these eccentric WWE Superstars as Brie does her best to nurse, not only Nikki, but John and Daniel back to health, all while trying to retain their sanity. With Nikki’s recent neck surgery, Brie’s retirement at WrestleMania(R), Daniel’s untimely retirement from WWE, and John’s rising profile in Hollywood, fans will get an exclusive beyond-the-ropes glimpse into how these dynamic individuals juggle their reality and prepare for their uncertain futures.

“Total Bellas” is produced by WWE and Bunim/Murray Productions. Gil Goldschein, Jeff Jenkins and Russell Jay are Executive Producers for Bunim/Murray Productions. Kevin Dunn is Executive Producer for WWE. Nikki Bella and Brie Bella also serve as Executive Producers.

A house divided cannot stand… in stilettos. “Total Bellas” premieres Wednesday, October 5 at 8:00pm ET/PT only on E!

WWE Monday Night Raw Reaction 6/27/2016

This week’s episode of Monday Night Raw kicked off with Seth Rollins laying a verbal beatdown on Roman Reigns. Rollins showed Reigns’ tweet in which he apologized for being suspended.

Rollins poked fun at Reigns saying that he “owns” it after the fact. Rollins then claimed that he owns Roman Reigns and that Reigns doesn’t deserve to be in the WWE World Heavyweight Championship match at WWE Battleground. Dean Ambrose then decided to interrupt Rollins’ rant and began to question Rollins’ intentions. Ambrose claimed that all Reigns did was make a mistake and everyone makes mistake. Ambrose stated that he made a mistake when he considered Rollins to be his friend. AJ Styles then randomly interrupted and suggested that he take Reigns’ place in the title match. John Cena then interrupted the group discussion and also wanted to be added to the main event at Battleground. Stephanie McMahon then came out and said that having Dean Ambrose as WWE Champion is more embarrassing than what happened to Roman Reigns. Stephanie makes two matches for tonight, Cena vs Rollins and Styles vs Ambrose. If Cena and Styles win their matches tonight, they will be added to the title match at Battleground.

Reaction: There were some big time shots taken at Roman Reigns in this segment which surprised me. As far as I know, Reigns is still in the main event at Battleground and Styles or Cena may just be added to the match depending on whether they win or lose tonight. That makes sense to me, I just found it shocking how many shots the WWE took at Reigns during this segment.

Sasha Banks & Paige vs Dana Brooke & Charlotte

Charlotte and Dana Brooke were picking apart Paige during the beginning of this match. Paige just couldn’t get to the corner to tag in Sasha Banks for the longest time. Every single time she got close Charlotte or Dana Brooke would pull her back and beat her down again. Finally, Paige was able to escape and tag in Banks. Sasha took out both Dana Brooke and Charlotte, which allowed enough time to recover. Paige hit a massive kick on Charlotte outside the ring. Banks then locked in the Bank Statement on Dana Brooke in the middle of the ring for the submission victory.

Reaction: This was a good match that was actually given more than a couple of minutes. It seems like a no-brainer that Sasha Banks will be facing Charlotte at Battleground for her WWE Women’s Championship.

Rusev vs Titus O’Neil

Before the bell rang, O’Neil attacked Rusev. For the next minute or so, Titus had control of the match. However, Rusev hit a Clothesline and captured momentum in the match. Rusev then proceeded to hit O’Neil with knees and punches for the next couple of minutes. The crowd broke out into a “Let’s Go Titus!” chant for a brief period of time. As soon as O’Neil regained momentum, Rusev rolled out of the ring and want no part of the match. Rusev and O’Neil were brawling outside the ring when Titus threw Rusev into the timekeeper’s area. Titus then rolled back into the ring and won the match via count out.

Reaction: There were about 25 Clotheslines in this match, along with some punches and one Powerslam. It is looking like Titus O’Neil will get another shot at the U.S. Championship soon. Hopefully that match will be a lot more interesting than this one was.

https://twitter.com/CMPuLs3/status/747591913050615809

Kane and Stephanie McMahon are shown chatting backstage. Kane is begging for Stephanie to give him the opportunity to be the GM of Smackdown. The Miz returns from his month hiatus due to filming The Marine 5. Kane suggests that the Miz defend his Intercontinental Championship tonight, given the fact that he hasn’t in the past 30 days. Stephanie agrees and the Miz will be defending his title against a mystery opponent later in the evening.

John Cena vs Seth Rollins

The crowd was electric during this match. This was a back and forth match throughout, with a bunch of false-finishes. It looked like it was over when Cena caught Rollins and hit him with the AA, but Rollins was able to get his leg on the rope. The Club then showed up and surrounded the ring. This caused John Cena to be distracted and allowed Rollins to hit the Pedigree on Cena for the victory. John Cena will not be added to the WWE Championship match at Battleground.

Reaction: AJ Styles continues to outsmart John Cena. There is no doubt that Cena will play some kind of role in Styles’ match later tonight against Dean Ambrose. The match itself was excellent and the never-ending trend of hearing Cena call out every move before it happens continues.

https://twitter.com/spaceflyingGB/status/747599624425308160

https://twitter.com/LanceStorm/status/747585619732238336

Enzo and Cass defeated a couple of local wrestlers in about 5 seconds. After the match, the Social Outcasts made their return (minus Adam Rose) and confronted Enzo and Cass. Bo Dallas claimed that the Social Outcasts aren’t soft, they are hard. Naturally, this led to Enzo cutting some jokes on the Social Outcasts. Heath Slater hopped into the ring and was promptly hit with a kick in the face by Big Cass, The Social Outcasts then retreated as Enzo and Cass stood tall in the ring.

Summer Rae vs Becky Lynch

Natalya joined the announcer’s table during this match. Natalya claimed that she attacked Becky Lynch because she was tired of being a nice person. Becky Lynch attacked Natalya before the match even started. The match between Becky Lynch and Summer Rae never happened.

Kevin Owens and Sami Zayn were guests on Chris Jericho’s Highlight Reel. Sami Zayn wants to put their rivalry to an end at Battleground because he believes it costing both Zayn and Owens their careers. Kevin Owens agrees to the match, but claims that their rivalry is all Sami Zayn’s fault. Jericho begins to insult both Owens and Zayn. He then proceeds to pose in the middle of the ring, which leads to Zayn and Owens both kicking Jericho in the face at the same time.

Reaction: Owens and Zayn have had so many classic matches over the years, so I’m not going to complain about another one. However, I do hope that this is the last one for awhile so that both Superstars can move onto bigger and better things.

WWE Intercontinental Championship Match: The Miz (c) vs Kane

The crowd was extremely quiet during this match. Kane dominated the Miz throughout the beginning of the match, Maryse appeared to hurt her leg during the match and the Miz left the ring to help her. The Miz then carried her out of the arena and Kane won via count out. However, the Miz is still Intercontinental Champion.

Reaction: This was brutal. Maryse clearly faked the injury so that the Miz could get out of defending his title. The Miz and Maryse were shown celebrating her acting performance after the match. I thought this would have been a perfect spot for Darren Young to make his return, instead it was Demon Kane. Given the fact that the Miz weaseled his way out of the match, I’m guessing he will have to face Kane again for the title.

Sheamus & Alberto Del Rio vs Apollo Crews & Cesaro

Once again, the crowd was absolutely silent in Tampa. Sheamus and Del Rio weren’t getting along during the match, but were still able to dominate Cesaro. Del Rio abandoned Sheamus, making it a 2 on 1 match. Apollo Crews got the pinfall victory over Sheamus. After the match, Cesaro and Crews celebrated in the ring.

The New Day came out dressed like the Wyatt Family. Once they got to the ring, they started cracking jokes on the Wyatts. Xavier Woods wanted them to wrap it up, but Kofi and Big E wanted to continue. The Wyatt Family interrupted the New Day and Xavier Woods once again looked rattled. Bray Wyatt told Woods that he can trust him. The promo ended with Bray Wyatt starting a “New Day falls” chant.

Dean Ambrose vs AJ Styles

Seth Rollins joined the announcer’s table for this match. AJ Styles controlled most of the match, but Dean Ambrose kept fighting back. Rollins was forced to root for Ambrose in this match because if Styles won, he would be added to the main event at Battleground. Styles was able to lock in the Calf Crusher but Ambrose fought his way to the ropes. Gallows and Anderson came down to ring which caused Cena to come down to the ring as well. AJ Styles was distracted by Cena and Ambrose hit the Dirty Deeds on Styles for the victory. Styles will not be added to the WWE Championship at Battleground.

After the match, Seth Rollins attacked Rollins from behind and hit him with the Pedigree. Gallows and Anderson hit the Magic Killer on Cena at the top of the entrance ramp. After seeing this, Rollins decided to hit another Pedigree on Dean Ambrose. Rollins then put his foot on Ambrose’s face and raised the WWE Championship over his head. The Club also celebrated over dismantling John Cena.

Reaction: This was a great main event that resulted in nothing changing. The WWE Championship match at Battleground is still a triple threat between Ambrose, Rollins and Reigns. AJ Styles and John Cena will most likely have their rematch at Battleground as well.

Paul Heyman On What Would “Doom” The Brand Split, Talks Reigns, Lesnar

Paul Heyman was recently interviewed by ESPN where the main topic of conversation was Brock Lesnar. Heyman said Lesnar’s UFC return is the “greatest thing to ever happen to him” because competition is “in his blood.”

The topic of conversation moved to WWE and their upcoming draft. Heyman put over how big of a deal it is that SmackDown is going live on Tuesday nights, and what WWE needs to do to make sure the brand split isn’t “doomed”

“I think it’s paramount. SmackDown has to come across as a brand that is truly competing with Monday Night Raw. If the brand is not competitive with WWE in terms of talent, production, look, presentation — just in terms of the manner in which the announcers get to describe the product — it’s doomed,” Heyman said. “But I don’t see it going down that way. Vince McMahon is not known for doing things half-ass and I’m sure that the directive within WWE is that as of July 19 when this brand split happens there will be an equal and distinctive roster on each side and that they are going to compete.”

The former ECW promoter was also asked about Roman Reigns, who was suspended last week for failing a drug test under the WWE Wellness Policy.

“I don’t know any better advice I can give someone than to say I make no excuses and I own this,” Heyman said of the Wellness Policy violation. “That’s called accountability and it’s the same thing I teach my children. The man took accountability for his actions.

You can read Heyman’s entire interview with ESPN here.

Feud To End At WWE Battleground

WWE has announced Sami Zayn vs. Kevin Owens to end their feud at the 7/24 Battleground PPV.

The only other match announced as of this writing is WWE World Champion Dean Ambrose vs. Seth Rollins vs. Roman Reigns.

Battleground will be the first PPV of the new split brand era, but the show will feature wrestlers from both RAW and SmackDown.

WWE RAW Results – June 27, 2016

This week’s episode of WWE RAW airs live from the Amalie Arena in Tampa, Florida. Stars advertised for tonight’s show include Dean Ambrose, John Cena, AJ Styles, and Seth Rollins.

– Seth Rollins comes out to the ring with a mic to open the show. Rollins says Reigns’ mistake he made that got him suspended soils Seth Rollins’ good name. Rollins mocks Reigns’ apology he wrote on Twitter about the Wellness Policy suspension, and says he owns Reigns. Dean Ambrose interrupts and says as far as he’s concerned, the triple threat match at Battleground is still on. This brings out AJ Styles, who says says the match should remain a triple threat and he should get the spot. The three argue until John Cena comes out and says he deserves Reigns’ spot. Stephanie McMahon comes out and says Rollins has to face John Cena tonight, and AJ has to face Dean Ambrose. If Cena and AJ can win, they’ll be added to the title match at Battleground. Stephanie wishes good luck to everyone except Dean.

Paige & Sasha Banks def. Dana Brooke & Charlotte: RAW cuts to commercial shortly after the bell. Back from the break, Dana is working on Paige up against the ropes. Charlotte gets the tag and continues the offense until Paige hits a kick to the midsection. Sasha and Brooke get the tags and Sasha hits some knee strikes in the corner for a 2 count. After a brief distraction by Charlotte, Sasha hits the backstabber and the Banks Statement for the win.

Titus def. Rusev : Titus gets in all the offense in the opening moments and hits a spinning powerslam for a 2 count. Rusev comes back with a kick and a series of elbows on Titus. Titus tries to mount a comeback but Rusev drops him with a spinning heel kick. Rusev goes to the outside and Titus follows, they collide with a double clothesline then Titus throws Rusev over the fan barricade and wins via countout.

– Stephanie is on the phone in the back and gets interrupted by Kane. The Miz and Maryse walk over to complain about not being treated like stars, and Kane says The Miz should be more concerned with defending his IC Title. She says his opponent will be a surprise.

Seth Rollins def. John Cena: Both men are cautious in the opening moments until Rollins hits a kick to the midsection and beats down Cena. Rollins hits a dropkick for a 2 count, but Cena comes back with a dropkick of his own. Rollins hits an elbow and the Blockbuster neckbreaker off the top for another 2 count. Cena comes back and goes for the Five Knuckle Shuffle, but Rollins kicks him in the face and sends Cena rolling out of the ring. Back in the ring, Cena hits a couple back suplexes and the Five Knuckle Shuffle for a 2 count. Rollins comes back with a superkick for a 2 count of his own. Cena hits a tornado DDT off the middle rope, and Rollins comes back with a powerbomb on Cena into the turnbuckles. Rollins goes for a frogsplash off the top but Cena rolls out of the way. Cena goes up top, but Rollins catches him with a suplex and a Falcon Arrow for another near-fall. Rollins attempts a Pedigree, but Cena gets out and comes back with an Attitude Adjustment, but Rollins gets his foot up on the ropes to break the pin. Rollins avoids another AA attempt, but Cena gets him in the STF instead. AJ and The Club come out and distract Cena, which leads to Rollins hitting the Pedigree for the win.

Enzo & Cass def. Unknown jobbers: Enzo instructs the crowd to start doing the wave as soon as the bell rings. Very shortly after the bell, they hit the Bada Boom for the win.

– After the match, The Social Outcasts comes out to confront Enzo and Cass. They hit the ring and Cass sends Heath Slater to the floor with a big boot. The Outcasts retreat and Enzo and Call call them soft.

– In the latest segment with Darren Young and Bob Backlund, Backlund says they are going to usher in the Darren Young Era in WWE.

Becky Lynch vs. Summer Rae – No contest?: Natalya is on commentary for this one. Cole asks her why she attacked Becky Lynch twice, and Natalya says “enough is enough and it’s time for a change.” Before the bell, Becky attacks Natalya at ringside until the referee breaks it up.

– Jericho comes out to host The Highlight Reel with Kevin Owens and Sami Zayn. Zayn says he wants to put an end to this rivalry with Owens at Battleground once and for all because it’s holding them back in their careers. They argue about who ruined their friendship and why Owens first turned on Zayn, and Owens agrees to a match at Battleground. Angle On WWE Return Timeframe, Vince Caring About Him, Everyone In TNA Drinking

In an interview with Sports Illustrated this week, Kurt Angle reiterated that he won’t be returning to WWE for their upcoming draft. Angle says he’s spoken with Triple H, and that you might see the Olympic gold medalist back on either RAW or SmackDown sometime in 2017.

“I had a talk with WWE,” said Angle. “It’s confidential. I will not be returning for the draft. Possibly in the future, most likely next year, but that is not a guarantee. It was a loose conversation but I will be in touch with Triple H [Paul Levesque] in the future.”

Angle left WWE in 2006 for competitor TNA, but says Vince McMahon still cares about him and he admires the WWE Chairman’s work ethic.

“Vince always cared about me. He’s a good guy, and he felt like he was my father figure. I admired Vince’s work ethic and drive,” Angle said. “He was a machine. He was willing to sacrifice so much to be a success, and he was one of those guys who I feared and looked up to. I feared him the same way I feared my father. I was right – he was a good guy. He would tell me when I screwed up, and he’d tell me how to fix it.”

While he credits TNA owner Dixie Carter with making him go to rehab, he says McMahon had also tried to talk to him about his battle with painkiller addiction.

“[Vince] basically said, ‘Listen, you won an Olympic gold medal. Very few people on this planet have ever done that. You’re special, you can kick this thing.’ But I fell back into it,” Angle recalled.

Despite his numerous career highlights, Angle remembers the low points in both WWE and TNA. He recalls breaking his neck four times in two years with WWE due to rushing himself to return each time, and says the atmosphere in TNA wasn’t conducive to his fight with alcohol and painkillers.

“I was at a company where everybody was drinking, and you were encouraged to drink with them,” Angle said of TNA. “That’s where the alcohol came in. I didn’t go crazy with it, but when you mix it with pills, it can make you do some really crazy things. It can make you careless.”

Kurt says he’s now been clean and sober for three years. You can read the entire article about him here.
