Post-Draft Plans For The Women’s Division, Vince Misses RAW & SmackDown, Natalya

– We don’t know why but Vince McMahon was not present for this week’s RAW and SmackDown TV tapings, which is rare. As noted earlier, Stephanie McMahon also missed this week as she was at the Cannes Lion Festival in Cannes, France.

– Earlier this week, Natalya vehemently denied reports that she is leaving WWE when her current deal expires. Natalya is signed to WWE for a significant period of time, so she won’t be going anywhere anytime soon.

– When the WWE Brand Split news first broke, there was talk of keeping the WWE women’s division on just one brand. It appears WWE has changed their mind as word now is that the Women’s Champion and the division will be featured on both RAW and Smackdown when the split begins next month.

Eli Drake Talks Biggest Gripe With Pro Wrestling In The Last Decade, His Position In TNA

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=17P4PdMzXao

TNA King of the Mountain Champion Eli Drake was recently interviewed by The Huffington Post. Here are some highlights of what he said about:

Strongly disliking comedy characters in wrestling:

“One of my biggest gripes with wrestling in the last decade is it has seen a lot of silly, goofy characters. I feel like every other match is a comedy spot, and there’s nothing wrong with that, but I think if there is a comedy spot, it should be special.”

His current role in TNA:

“In all honesty, I’m super happy to be where I am, doing what I’m doing and making a living doing what I love to do. Now I’m being recognized in the sense of being given a more prominent role and being showcased; I couldn’t ask for anything more.”

Curtis Axel Talks Mr. Perfect’s Legacy, Getting Into Wrestling With His Last Name

Former WWE Intercontinental champion Curtis Axel recently spoke with SI’s Extra Mustard blog about his father “Mr. Perfect” Curt Hennig’s legacy.

“My father’s legacy will forever be sketched in history as one of the greatest performers in not only the WWE, but also the whole world. He is in the WWE Hall of Fame. He could not only talk the talk, but he could walk the walk through his look, athletic ability, and attitude. He had more love for this business than anyone,” Axel said.

Axel added that even though his father is gone, his legacy lives on through him, Curt’s friends and fans. His father was his best friend and hero and he’s determined to make him proud no matter what.

He also spoke about what it was like to be the son of such a revered legend. Curt Hennig is as bonafide a Hall of Famer as they come and there must be pressure associated with having to fill those shoes.

“It’s a cursed blessing,” Axel said. “It isn’t easy trying to live up to what my father accomplished–for Christ’s sake, my dad’s name was ‘Mr. Perfect.’ We’re constantly compared, and I couldn’t be prouder to be his son, but I’m not trying to be my father. It’s a common misconception, because my father is a Hall of Famer and a major star in this business, that the path was paved for me. But that’s the furthest thing from the truth. Some generational guys start their training on the WWE payroll, but I didn’t.”

Roderick Strong Officially Gone From Ring Of Honor

Ring of Honor announced on Wednesday that former ROH Champion Roderick Strong is gone from the company. Strong is a tremendous talent that has plied his craft across the world over the past decade-plus. A free agent of his caliber won’t have a hard time finding work, comment on this article and tell us where you’d like to see him turn up next.

Goodbye… For Now.

Roderick Strong Departs Ring of Honor

Roderick Strong told ROH officials that he plans to leave the company after Saturday’s TV Taping in Concord, NC to pursue other opportunities. This brings to conclusion an amazing run of success lasting nearly 13 years in Ring of Honor. Immediately after his announcement, Roddy sat down with ROHWrestling.com to provide exclusive quotes for a look back at his tenure with the company.

It was September 20, 2003 at the Murphy Rec Center in Philadelphia, PA, where it all began in Ring of Honor for Roderick Strong. A young, muscular upstart with movie star looks made his way into the ring and proved immediately that he had the tools to be something very special.

“After seeing ROH for the first time I immediately went and put “Wrestle for ROH” at the top of my goals. It was everything I wanted as a fan. As a wrestler, I knew getting there and staying there would be a difference maker for my career” said Strong. “As I prepared to walk through the curtain, all I could think was, ‘don’t screw this up!’ Honestly, I felt I was still very young but I couldn’t be more prepared for whatever opportunity I would be given”. Little did anyone know that Roderick Strong would become a stalwart for Ring of Honor over the next decade.

They say you can measure a true athlete’s greatness by the amount of championships he has held and Strong’s championship resume is befitting a wrestler of his caliber. In 2005, he teamed with Austin Aries to win the ROH World Tag Team Championship. In September of 2010, Roddy ended the 7 month reign of Tyler Black to become the ROH World Champion. In March, 2012 he would defeat Jay Lethal for the ROH World Television Championship to become the 2nd ROH Triple Crown Champion. He would capture the ROH World Television Championship once more in October of 2015.

When asked what winning championships meant to him, Strong said, “The championships I won all carried a different feeling and were amazing for very different reasons. Winning the ROH World Tag Team Titles was something special because I was always a huge fan of tag team wrestling and holding it made me the best. To be considered part of the best tag teams in the world was an honor. The ROH World Championship was something that meant a lot because it was validation from Ring of Honor that all the miles, working through injuries, time lost with my family was not lost. I was in a position where the pressure is at its highest and they knew I could get the job done. Both of my TV title wins came at important points of my career. They helped show not only me, but my peers and the ROH fans my growth as a performer”.

He added “Believe it or not, when I lost the World title to Eddie Edwards, it was a very special moment for both of us. Looking back, I realized I was happy that I could be a part of a landmark moment for his career. Losing the TV title to Adam Cole also holds a special place in my heart. To see the crowd react the way they did and making him really earn it was awesome. To be a part of their moments is something ROH gave me and I will never forget.”

In the early days of Ring of Honor, fans enjoyed his great matches with likes of Bryan Danielson, CM Punk, Samoa Joe and AJ Styles. “Guys like them were the reason I wanted to come to ROH and why I fell in love with wrestling here. I wanted to go out and be tested by the best and prove I either had what it takes or not. Every match up was such a great learning experience and made me who I am today.”

ROH fans witnessed amazing battles with international stars Shinsuke Nakamura, Hiroshi Tanahashi and “the Rainmaker” Kazuchika Okada. “I was fired up at the opportunity to show the world, no matter who they are and where they are from that I can go toe to toe with them. I pride myself on being able to work with anyone and any style so it was nice to be able to do that.”

More recent wars with ROH World Television Champion Bobby Fish and ROH World Champion Jay Lethal really showed that Strong continued to operate on an elite level. “Fish is a warrior and someone I respect immensely, not just as a personality, but also a performer and beating Jay Lethal for my second Television title was the beginning of the next chapter of my career. It showed the world that I wasn’t going anywhere for a very long time and it showed the growth in me as a performer. Those matches with Jay are very special to me.”

When asked about why he stayed with ROH as long as he did, Strong said “ROH was everything great about wrestling to me, getting the most talented people together to push each other and come up with super-unique and interesting things to make the product stand out. They gave me my first real chance to grow and had the confidence in letting me fail or succeed. ROH will always mean the world to me.”

ROH fans have had a love/hate relationship and at times, they truly loved to hate him. What can never be lost is Roddy’s appreciation the fans. He doesn’t have an “off button” or know how to take it easy. Roderick Strong is truly a once-in-a-lifetime athlete that Ring of Honor and its fans have been blessed to have witnessed for nearly the past 13 years.

Strong concluded, “I want to be able to personally thank everyone, from the new fans that just found ROH, to the fans that have followed me from the beginning. Ring of Honor is more than just a company to me. It’s my family, I started as 20-year-old kid just looking for an opportunity to learn and grow as a performer. Now I stand here after 12 and a half years loving it just as much, if not more than when I came in. I want to thank you for your patience as you watched me grow over time. I want to thank you for the cheers, the boos and the passion you showed me. Most importantly I want to thank you personally for always supporting the greatest company in the world, Ring of Honor. I hope to see everyone this Saturday in Concord”

Join us Saturday in Concord, North Carolina at the Cabarrus Arena as Ring of Honor bids farewell to the one and only, “Mr. ROH” Roderick Strong.

Samoa Joe, Finn Balor, Shinsuke Nakamura & Austin Aries Added To WWE Live Event

Four of NXT’s top competitors have been added to Sunday’s WWE live event from Orlando, Florida, a show Roman Reigns will miss due to his 30-day suspension for violating the company’s talent wellness policy.

Orlando’s Amway Center now is advertising a bonus NXT tag team match that is a pretty damn good consolation prize: NXT Champion Samoa Joe and Austin Aries will team up against Finn Balor and Shinsuke Nakamura.

Other top stars advertised to appear include Seth Rollins, Cesaro, Alberto Del Rio, Sasha Banks, Eva Marie and “Members of The Club.”

The NXT tag match comes just weeks before the WWE Draft, when up to a dozen NXT performers are rumored to be joining RAW and SmackDown. While Samoa Joe is still NXT champion and Nakamura/Balor appear to be on a collision course for NXT Takeover: Brooklyn, you’d be hard pressed to find anybody in NXT more qualified to be drafted than these four.

CM Punk’s UFC Debut Pushed Back Again? Who Filled In For Lawler On SmackDown, More

– MMA journalist Ariel Helwani says the latest plan for CM Punk’s UFC is for the fight to take place at UFC 203, scheduled for September 10th. However, the fight date is “far from a done deal.” In recent months, it was reported that Punk would likely debut at UFC 202, which takes place during SummerSlam weekend. Punk will [eventually] fight Welterweight Mickey Gall (2-0).

Punk signed with UFC back in December 2014, shortly after his WWE departure and his controversial appearance on Colt Cabana’s Art of Wrestling podcast. His planned debut has been pushed back multiple times, most recently when he underwent back surgery in February to repair a herniated disc. UFC and Punk are still adamant that he’ll fight this year, but much of the excitement that surrounded his initial announcement has dissipated.

Visit our partner site MMANews.com for daily coverage of UFC and the world of Mixed Martial Arts.

– With Jerry Lawler serving an indefinite suspension from WWE as a result of his domestic assault arrest from last week, David Otunga filled in the the King at Tuesday’s SmackDown tapings.

– In response to other websites reporting that Natalya is retiring soon, the 2nd generation Superstar slammed the rumor as “TOTALLY FALSE.”

– Nancy Benoit’s sister Sandra will be Chris Jericho’s guest on his Talk is Jericho podcast this coming Friday. The episode will focus on the Benoit family tragedy.

Ken Anderson Talks About His Time In WWE, Paul Heyman’s Influence On His Career

Former WWE and TNA star Ken Anderson joined the Jordan Garber NOW podcast earlier this week to discuss his career in wrestling, departure from TNA, and the evolution of his persona for WWE. Here are some highlights of what he said about:

Making it to WWE developmental:

“There were up and downs and it took me 6 years of humping it and hustling on the indies to make it to where i got hired by wwe and got a developmental deal. Honestly right before i got signed was the only time where I was like i’ve been doing this for 6 years. This point you got all all your doubters saying “How long are you gonna keep doing this? When are you gonna be successful… When are you gonna hang it up? After awhile it kind of gets to you but i never took my foot off the gas pedal.”

Paul Heyman’s Influence on His Career

“I’ve been floating around OVW for 6 months not really having a sense of purpose. Then Paul Heyman came down… His very first day he pulled me aside and said ‘You’re going to be the first guy out of here I promise you'”

His First Win In WWE:

“I was scheduled to have a dark match with Funaki. He was gonna go over. I was getting ready and Dave Lagana comes by and says I just wanna let you know that we need to change this match. We need a finisher because you’re gonna go over. 2nd this is a televised match and third… Welcome to SmackDown! ”

Jordan Garber NOW airs Tuesday nights at 11:30 PM ET on the VOC Nation Radio Network (vocnation.com)

WWE Considering Multiple Price Tiers For The Network

WWE Chief Strategy & Financial Officer George Barrios held a presentation at the Bernstein Global Future of Media & Telecom Summit in Boston on Tuesday and stated that WWE’s current TV deal with NBC Universal expires the first quarter of 2019. Barring any dramatic downturn in viewership, this is the earliest that we could see RAW going back to 2 hours. WWE’s TV deals in the UK and India expire in the fourth quarter of that same year.

Barrios also noted that he could see the WWE Network offering multiple price tiers in the future.

Linda McMahon On If She’s Ever Met Anyone Like Vince, WWE Being PG

Former WWE CEO Linda McMahon was recently interviewed by Sports Illustrated’s Extra Mustard blog to promote her new venture, Women’s Leadership LIVE, which strives to “educate, inspire, and empower women to stand out as catalysts for change and to build a world where women obtaining and exercising power is both expected and commonplace.”

Here are some quick highlights of what Linda McMahon said about:

WWE going PG;

“That wasn’t me, so much, moving to a PG-rating. The development of WWE programming, over time, has mirrored the market place. During the time that WWE was in the ‘Attitude Era,’ which was TV-14–if you looked at television programming and movies that were produced, they were edgier during that same time frame. Then, as that opinion shifted, WWE’s opinion shifted, as well, and sponsors had different demands. It was more of a family-friendlier audience to come back to PG-TV.”

If she’s ever met anybody like her husband:

“No, I’ve yet to meet anyone like him. I was the honors student and the civic leader in my hometown, and Vince was the local badass. There was a little bit of that bad boy aspect that I think was incredibly appealing, and it must have been–we’ll have our fiftieth anniversary this coming August. He’s one of the smartest people I know, and a very shrewd businessman.”

Video of Paige Being Detained, Incident Explained, Del Rio’s Involvement, WWE’s Reaction

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GSA4qKpo3HA

Court Bauer over at MLW Radio has provided an exclusive update on the incident involving Paige following Sunday’s Money in the Bank PPV in Las Vegas.

On episode 232 of MLW Radio (co-hosted by Mister Saint Laurent & Konnan), Bauer detailed what actually went down, as told to him by Alberto Del Rio. After Money in the Bank, Paige & Del Rio went out to a show. There was a drunk couple at the venue heckling them, which led ADR to called over security. The rowdy couple was ejected and they went on with their night. When the show let out, that same couple was waiting for them outside. An altercation occurred Paige was physically involved. As per multiple reports, Paige ran into the street.

Police were close by and quickly got the situation under control. Paige was handcuffed and taken for an evaluation. She was cleared and no arrest was made. The general feeling feeling from the ‘powers that be’ is that the incident was handled properly.  She wrestled against Charlotte the next night on RAW and was part of the Sasha Banks return angle, so it doesn’t seem like any disciplinary action will be taken.

Jim Ross “Very Disappointed” By Reigns’ Suspension, Talks Paige Incident

Jim Ross says he is “very disappointed” at the news of Roman Reigns’ 30-day suspension for violating the wellness policy. J.R. spoke about Reigns’ suspension in a new blog entry on JRsBarBQ.com.

“Hopefully, Reigns took something that he was unaware was a violation,” Ross wrote. “There are lots of supplements on the market that I’m told often times don’t jive with the wellness policy and its up to every talent who may use these supplements to make sure that they are good to ingest. A failure to do is is totally irresponsible. Hopefully this is a one off situation that will never occur again for this talent that WWE is relying on to be a prime time player for years to come.”

Ross also talked about Paige being detained by police in Las Vegas last weekend, saying the rumors are “uncomfortable.” J.R. says these events rarely go unnoticed and he feels WWE will thoroughly evaluate the matter.

You can read his full blog entry here.

Roman Reigns Suspension Fallout: When WWE Knew, Draft Implications, Battleground

Obviously the big story of the day is Roman Reigns being suspended for 30 days for violating WWE’s talent wellness policy.

In a breaking news audio update, Dave Meltzer revealed on Wrestling Observer Radio that WWE was aware of Reigns failing a drug test prior to Sunday’s Money in the Bank pay-per-view. It explains why WWE took the title off him, but booking him in the main event of the next PPV is a curious decision to say the least.

Reigns’ suspension will be over in the days leading up to Battleground on 7/24, but he will not be appearing TV prior to the show. It remains to be seen how WWE will handle the situation on air. The company could have had Seth Rollins defeat Reigns on RAW last night, challenge Ambrose in a singles match at Battleground then hold off on the triple threat until SummerSlam. It’s somewhat odd that WWE didn’t go this route, but perhaps in time we’ll find out why things unfolded the way they did.

The other big issue is the upcoming WWE Draft, scheduled for July 19th. After being pushed as “the guy” for the past several months, Reigns would have almost certainly been the top pick by either the RAW or SmackDown. With the way he’s been pushed, it’s not far fetched to assume Reigns would have been the first overall pick of the draft, ahead of John Cena. Again, we’ll just have to see how this one plays out.

It’s also worth noting that WWE will have to also change the main event the upcoming live event from Madison Square Garden on 7/16, which was scheduled to be Reigns vs. Seth Rollins.

WWE RAW Viewership For Post-MITB Episode

Monday’s episode of WWE RAW averaged 3.467 million viewers on the USA Network, up significantly from last week’s dismal 2.97 million viewers.

The show featured fallout from Money in the Bank, Dean Ambrose’s first appearance as WWE Champion and the return of the Wyatt Family. Here’s the hourly breakdown:

  • Hour 1: 3.420 million
  • Hour 2: 3.562 million
  • Hour 3: 3.420 million

RAW was ranked #3 for the night in viewership and #2 in the 18-49 demographic.

Roman Reigns Suspended By WWE For Wellness Policy Violation

WWE announced Tuesday that Roman Reigns (real name Joe Anoa`i) has been suspended 30 days effective immediately for his first violation of the organization’s Talent Wellness Program.

Reigns issued a statement on Twitter this afternoon regarding his suspension.

Reigns lost the WWE World Heavyweight Championship to Seth Rollins on Sunday at Money in the Bank. The following night on Raw, a Triple Threat Match between Reigns, Rollins and new WWE World Heavyweight Champion Dean Ambrose was announced for WWE Battleground on July 24. The match could still take place since Reigns’ suspension ends on July 20.
