Details On Bayley Joining The Main Roster, Rumored Feud With Sasha Banks

Bayley made her main roster debut last weekend at Battleground, shocking the WWE Universe as Sasha Banks’ “surprise opponent” against Charlotte and Dana Broke. It was billed as a “one night guest spot” for Bayley, but Sasha Banks is ready to ‘kidnap’ NXT’s resident hugger and bring her to the main roster permanently.

Bayley is scheduled to challenge Asuka for the NXT Women’s Championship during SummerSlam weekend at NXT Takeover: Back to Brooklyn in a match that could see her become the first 2-time champ. It’s expected that Bayley will be graduating from NXT shortly after SummerSlam, with Cageside Seats reporting that WWE officials are already consdiering Sasha Banks vs Bayley as the Women’s title match for WrestleMania 33.

However that plays out, here’s the Twitter exchange between the two from Sunday afternoon. As such close friends, this has the makings of a money feud.

Spoiler For Monday’s WWE RAW Involving Brock Lesnar

The Beast Incarnate Brock Lesnar is scheduled for Monday’s WWE RAW from the Philips Arena in Atlanta, GA. However, he won’t be alone. Lesnar will be be joined by his Advocate, Paul Heyman, according to Mike Johnson of PWInsider.

Heyman will be on hand to promote Lesnar’s SummerSlam match against Randy Orton 3 weeks from tonight. As noted last week, WWE is now advertising Lesnar for the 8/15 episode of RAW, just days before the match.

Join us here throughout SummerSlam weekend for our in-person coverage from Brooklyn, New York.

Michaels Recalls Partying With Flair In The 80’s, Calling Him “Old Yeller” During Retirement Feud

Fellow WWE Hall of Famers Ric Flair and Shawn Michaels recently sat down together to record the latest edition of Flair’s podcast and did some serious reminiscing.

Michaels and Flair went all the way back to when they first met in 1985, while working for Central States Wrestling in Kansas City. Michaels said he met Flair at a very small bar when he was 19, and Flair bought him drinks the rest of the night. Michaels recalls taking the opportunity to tell Flair what he meant to him as a pro wrestler after having watched him for years before that night.

Later on, they faced off in the ring in December of ’91 for six minutes in what Michaels calls the biggest match of his career at that point.

“I think everybody knew that I just was such a huge fan of Ric’s, so just to give me the opportunity to be in there with him, I think, is probably somebody, a booker, or a producer, or somebody, an agent, that knew that and said, ‘Shawn would get a kick out of that opportunity, so let him do it,'” Michaels recalled. “Yeah, we had six minutes. There was very little time. You just do the best you can.” Michaels recalled his mindset at the time, “heck, I don’t know the future, so for me, this is a huge opportunity. You’re in there with the guy that you always dreamed about being in there with. It’s a huge opportunity and then, gosh, it was the fastest six minutes you ever have.”

Fast-forwarding to Flair’s retirement match against Michaels at WrestleMania 24, The Nature Boy took issue with repeatedly being called “Old Yeller” during the build-up to the match. Michaels explained the Old Yeller references, saying it wasn’t about age as much as it was having to kill a beloved character.

“For me, all the Old Yeller stuff was more about love.” Michaels explained, “it was about someone being put into a position that they did not envy and they were going to have to do something and put an end to something that they didn’t want to put an end to. And the reason they didn’t want to put an end to it was because that person, that everything about that meant so much. And again, that’s the conflict that ‘HBK’ and the character were going through in the whole storyline with Ric. And that’s what made it so, for me, enjoyable to do.”

You can listen to Michaels’ entire appearance on The Ric Flair Show here.

Strong made his debut in 2000, and worked with ROH from 2003 until this year. He’s held world titles in ROH, Full Impact Pro, and PWG.

Mauro Ranallo On What Vince McMahon Is Really Like, Being Compared To J.R.

Mauro Ranallo recently took part in an ‘Ask Me Anything’ on Reddit to promote SmackDown Live where he spoke on being compared to Jim Ross, what it’s like working with Vince McMahon, and more.

When asked about the above video where MMA legend Mirko “Cro Cop” Filipovic pranked him, Ranallo said even that wasn’t as intimidating as working with WWE Chairman Vince McMahon.

“Oh man, with all due respect to Cro Cop, Vince McMahon is an intimidating individual because of the amount of respect he commands because of what he’s done for entertainment, turning the business into a billion dollar success story,” Ranallo answered. “He rarely sleeps, he’s a workaholic, he’s passionate, he loves what he does. Every week I’m inspired by what he puts into his business. From the moment I arrive at the arena, it’s go time. It brings out the best in you because it comes from the top. But in terms of intimidating, Vince McMahon takes the cake for sure.”

Mauro says he’s flattered by comparisons to Hall of Fame announcer Jim Ross, and that he considers J.R. and Gordon Solely to be the best in the business. He says the best announcers are ones who are “committed to the art of communication,” and says he used to volunteer to work for free at radio stations just to get his foot in the door.

Ranallo says what he likes about pro wrestling announcing over other sports is that he can show more of his personality.

“I love the entertainment business, I love sports, I think it allows me to show off more of my character and have fun knowing it’s entertainment as much as athletics,” said of announcing for WWE. “For me it’s the fun and the hype, when it’s done right there’s nothing like it because it takes you on a rollercoaster ride.”

Lashley Pulled From Indy Appearances After TNA Raises His Appearance Fee

TNA has taken control of Bobby Lashley’s independent bookings, and it may have resulted in at least one cancellation.

Lashley has reportedly been pulled from an upcoming tournament promoted by Lucha Libre Elite in Mexico. The Wrestling Observer Newsletter reports that TNA’s new deal with Lashley gives them control of his bookings, and they’ve raised his price. TNA is reportedly now charging $6,000 USD to book Lashley, which is a lot higher than what Lashley was charging before.

Lashley still gets paid the full amount in his TNA contract whether his appearances are cancelled or not. He’s reportedly lost at least two more bookings since TNA took over the duties and raised his fee.

TNA’s business model here is to offer talent a higher dollar amount on their contracts, then make it back by booking the talent out to independent promotions. In the case of new TNA signee Moose for example, TNA is expected to book him for 110 non-TNA dates over the next year.

With that match set, here’s the updated card for WWE SummerSlam:

  • Randy Orton vs. Brock Lesnar
  • WWE Champion Dean Ambrose vs. Dolph Ziggler
  • Seth Rollins vs. Finn Balor to crown the first Universal Champion
  • WWE Women’s Champion Sasha Banks vs. Charlotte

Overview of WWE Q2 Report: Network Subs Up, TV Ratings Declining As Rights Fee Buoy Business

WWE continues to be at the center of an evolving media environment. Its recent brand extension is attempting to repair falling television ratings while rights contracts with broadcast partners continue to pay the wrestling company escalating fees into 2019. While the guaranteed money rolls in, WWE is still busy building up its live streaming service and widening its social media footprint.

Vince McMahon’s business may have gone all-in on the Network too soon in 2014, however, according to WWE’s Q2 report released today, OIBDA (a metric similar to profit) through the first six months of 2016 is about the same as it was at this time in 2015. The company estimates OIBDA for the year will be between $80 and $85 million, which would be a significant increase over $61.6 million for 2015.

TV rights could be the ship that sails WWE to whatever new media world it arrives at in mid-2018, when the next all-important TV contract negotiations likely take place. TV revenue will almost certainly be the largest source of money for the company at least until then. That segment of business accounted for $56.1 million in Q2 (April 1 to June 30), or 28% of all revenue.

tvrevoibda

TV money alone, in almost every quarter since 2014 is the difference that makes WWE a profitable business. The state of the media landscape in 2018, which is for now too hard to predict, and whether the company can negotiate another set of favorable rights deals with its major TV partners in the United States, United Kingdom and India, will have major implications for the future of the company’s business, and ultimately the future of the industry.

Paid subscriptions to the WWE Network continued to rise quarter-over-quarter. The “Free WrestleMania” campaign allowed new users to sign up for a free trial subscription that would allow them watch WrestleMania for free and potentially cancel their subscription without ever making a payment.

Capture

Paid subscriptions on the last day of the quarter, June 30 (1,511,000), managed to be slightly higher than the count on the day after WrestleMania 32 (1,454,000). WWE estimated average paid subscriptions will be within 2% of 1.49 million for next quarter, slightly down from 1.52 million this quarter.

The Network itself, however, had its first money-losing quarter since Q1 2015, due to investment in all the new programming intended to entice subscribers to keep their subscriptions after WrestleMania.

Meanwhile ratings have continued to decline at a concerning rate. WWE made that fact clear to investors on the very first page of their Key Performance Indicators document. The company makes it evident its ratings are falling harder than the rest of cable TV’s primetime programming, including its own home, the USA Network.

tv

Ratings remain important to WWE’s relationships with its TV partners, who provide the company’s largest revenue stream. Even with declining TV ratings, though, research I’ve done recently shows that other metrics like live event attendance, merchandise revenue and Google searches, don’t support the conclusion that WWE’s popularity is also declining.

Strangely, WWE stated in its investor presentation and CEO Vince McMahon reiterated on the conference call that the July 19 rating for SmackDown was the highest since the program’s move to cable. SmackDown moved from MyNetworkTV (broadcast) to Syfy (cable) on October 1, 2010. According to PWTorch.com, the July 19, 2016, episode did a 2.20 rating. According to records on Gerweck.net, there are actually nine instances, both live specials and taped shows, when SmackDown did an equal or better rating than it did on July 19 of this year:

  • 12/21/2010: 2.53 (live airing)
  • 2/18/2011: 2.31 (taped)
  • 10/7/2011: 2.26 (taped)
  • 10/14/2011: 2.21 (taped)
  • 10/28/2011: 2.22 (taped)
  • 12/2/2011: 2.24 (live)
  • 1/13/2012: 2.21 (taped)
  • 12/18/2012: 2.29 (live)
  • 1/11/2013: 2.20 (taped)

We contacted WWE to ask whether its claim was an oversight, but have yet to receive a response.

naatt

Subject of some mild controversy, we now have an idea of what the actual paid attendance was for WrestleMania 32. Based on information published in the Key Performance Indicators, the paid attendance was somewhere between 73,711 and 85,888. (The spreadsheet used to calculate this is here.) Because the numbers above are rounded numbers, we only know the WrestleMania paid attendance within that range. WWE claimed as recently as in its press release today that 101,763 fans were in AT&T Stadium for the event. Dave Meltzer of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter reported the attendance was actually 97,769. It’s still possible thousands of fans were in the stadium with free admission, bringing the number closer to either WWE or the Observer’s report. But based on WWE’s own reports, we now know no more than 85,888 fans paid for admission to the event, and probably closer to something like 80,000 did.

avod

After many quarters of explosive growth, we got the first clue that video views on platforms like YouTube may have finally reached maturity for WWE. The peak in views and hours viewed in Q1 and the slight decline in Q2 could be related to increase interest leading up to WrestleMania, though, so this will be an interesting page in the KPIs to watch in Q3. If these two metrics stay flat or decline more, then that gives us good evidence that online video has reach its potential.

For the billions of video views WWE gets each quarter, they doesn’t translate into much OIBDA. The Digital Media segment, which accounts for revenue from ad-supported videos on YouTube and the like, made $6.5 million in revenue in Q2 and only $200,000 in OIBDA. Last quarter it lost $100,000.

social

However social media engagement is still trending upward. While social media followers is a metric that will always increase, social media engagement (a measure of “likes”, “follows”, “shares”, “retweets”, etc.) does fluctuate and is still on the rise more often than not for the company. Even less so than YouTube views, social media engagements don’t directly generate much if any revenue. If they achieve a more “steady state” though, they could eventually give us an idea of WWE’s overall popularity, should the company choose to continue to report these metrics.

WWE Chief Strategy and Financial Officer George Barrios went out of his way on the conference call to stress: “Changes in foreign exchange rates did not have a material impact on either revenue or profit for the quarter.”

Barrios was likely alluding to the so-called Brexit referrendum in the U.K. that took place on June 23, which led to a decline in the exchange rate of the British pound. The quarter, however, ended on June 30, so there was only seven days in this quarter in which the decline in the value of the pound could have affected WWE’s business. Chris Harrington of WrestlingInc.com confirmed with WWE that its U.K. TV rights fees are paid in U.S. dollars, not pounds.  However, it’s possible going forward that WWE’s business in the U.K. could be affected, as products sold directly to those consumers, such as WWE Network subscriptions, live event tickets and merchandise are charged in pounds. The British pound to U.S. dollar exchange rate has is down about 10% since the Brexit vote.

Investors must’ve been unsurprised by any news learned today. WWE’s stock was barely affected by the earnings release, holding in the $19 per share range all day.

To that point, this was a pretty lukewarm quarterly report for WWE. The company has clearly become very good at using its analytics to make estimates about what to expect for Network subscriber numbers. It’ll be interesting to see if it can go so far as to make an accurate estimate next year before WrestleMania. Thanks to accurate Network subscription estimates and guaranteed TV rights fees, the company can provide reliable estimates on OIBDA to its investors as well. There are fewer surprises now for WWE’s business, after a more volatile 2014 and 2015. As noted, that volatility may return when major television contracts come closer to their ends and need to be renegotiated, around 2018.

Trish Stratus Compares NXT Stars Joining RAW & SmackDown To WCW Stars Joining WWE

The brand split is bringing back old memories for WWE Hall of Famer Trish Stratus, who says the separation was a “good move.”

In a recent interview with Total Wrestling Magazine, Trish says WWE’s roster is deep enough with talent to pull off the brand split effectively. She says splitting the roster across RAW and SmackDown gives WWE the opportunity to spend more time developing each character.

“You can only highlight so many characters on one show and with so many NXT talent coming in, which is somewhat of a parallel to back in my day when we had the WCW talent come in, this gives the audience two separate platforms for storylines to unfold,” Trish said “Having new talent come in is obviously a plus, new faces is always good to keep the product fresh. It’s especially good, the fact that the audience is familiar with the current crop coming in, as opposed to a brand new persona they need to develop.”

Trish also gave her thoughts on SmackDown going live, saying that when it was taped it was missing the element of surprise. She feels that the show going live on Tuesday nights was a good move and that it forces talent to stay on their toes.

“When I was around you were always glad you were on Raw excited to be on a live telecast,” Trish continued, “also, it was a great challenge and a good learning tool to have the pressure to have to perform live with no editing to help your performance – or audience reaction, you had to earn it.”

Stratus was inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame in 2013.

Pat Patterson Talks Fighting With Vince, Says Ziggler Has Most Potential On Current Roster

Hall of Famer Pat Patterson recently shed some light on his behind-the-scenes dealings in the WWE. In an interview with The Rack podcast, Patterson talked about working with WWE Chairman Vince McMahon.

“I have good ideas and they listen,” Patterson said. “When you work with Vince McMahon for so many years you have to be creative, you have to come up with ideas and sometimes Vince and I would sometimes go and argue and debate on a certain subject. I wasn’t there to be a yes man, I gave my point of view and I stood on it.”

One of Patterson’s ideas was the Royal Rumble, which he said Vince McMahon wasn’t a fan of when he first pitched it.

“When I came up with the Royal Rumble, Vince (McMahon) thought it was a stupid idea,” Patterson revealed. “I said it’s not, it’s going to work, oh my god give me a break, he didn’t want to do it. It is now one of our the best pay per views we have every year. It is fun and the talent likes it.”

Patterson says he’s had to fight Vince on several issues over the years. Among them were bringing back talents who Vince had thought he was done with in the past, like Shawn Michaels and Bret Hart. Patterson had fought for those two talents years prior when Vince didn’t want to do the 60-minute Iron Man match between the two at WrestleMania 12. Patterson says he had to really convince Vince to go through with the match, and he says what Michaels and Hart did that night is something he will never forget.

As far as WWE’s current roster goes, Patterson feels that Dolph Ziggler has the biggest potential of anyone.

“I see it big time. He has come a long way, this kid,” Patterson said of Ziggler. “My point of view is if you got guys like Hulk Hogan, Steve Austin and all of these characters that are bigger than life, but those little guys, people love them. They are talented. That what makes feel that these can do nice things too.”

Santino Marella Speaks On His WWE Departure, His Comedy Gimmick & Relationship With Vince

Santino Marella recently shed some light on his release from WWE back in May. In an interview with the Jordan Garber NOW Podcast, Marella revealed the circumstances of his departure from the company.

“The contract just ran out, and they just opted not to renew it,” he said. Santino says the split wasn’t negative at all, and his experience was “amazing.”

The former Intercontinental Champion also sang the praises of WWE Chairman Vince McMahon. Marella says he “loves” Vince, and that the second-generation promoter was a mentor to him.

“Vince is the man, he doesn’t even know how much of a mentor he is to me,” he said. “When I watch him work and the hustles he has it’s unparalleled it’s amazing. He’s just the man”

Santino also talked about getting his comedy gimmick as a result of the WWE creative team losing faith in his original gimmick. He says when they turned him heel, more personality came out of him and Vince “loved it.”

FOX Renews John Cena’s American Grit For Second Season

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O7tigjUTLNc

American Grit starring John Cena has been renewed for a second season on FOX.

The first season didn’t draw stellar ratings. The season premiered with 2,430,000 viewers, and the finale drew 2,160,000 viewers. Deadline.com reports that while there’s no premier date for the second season, FOX has confirmed that they’ve renewed the reality series and casting for season two has begun.

The second season of American Grit will be the first project under Cena’s new deal Leftfield Entertainment to help them produce unscripted shows.

It’s unknown whether Cena will take time off from WWE for production of the second season. He’s not currently advertised for WWE’s SmackDown-branded Backlash pay-per-view on September 11th.

Kane Speaks On Possibly Running For Political Office

Glenn “Kane” Jacobs says he’s still eyeing a possible career in politics.

Back in May, Jacobs said he was “seriously considering” running as a Republican for the Knox County mayoral seat in 2018, now he says he think the country may be ready for him. In a new interview with Rare.us, Jacobs says being an outsider may be an advantage.

“I’d always hesitated before because I never thought the timing was right for someone like me, because I am an outsider,” he said. “Now, I think the country is so ready for a change at this point that being an outsider actually plays to my or anyone else in my position’s advantage. There are a lot of people in Washington, D.C., who have a lot of experience, and because of that, we’re 20 trillion dollars in debt.

“Maybe we need fresh blood and new perspective,” he theorized. “I think that’s maybe what people are looking for.”

Jacobs says politics divides people into tribes, and that he thinks people with opposing views should communicate better with each other.

“To me, the American dream is the ability to create the life that you want. If we can get back to that, that the American dream is the opportunity, the ability to create the life that you want so long as you’re not hurting anyone else, to live that life…if someone could come along with that message, it’d be awesome.”

More than one group attempted to recruit Jacobs to run for Tennessee senator in 2014 against Lamar Alexander.

Jacobs is currently on the road with WWE and recently starred in the WWE Studios film Countdown, released in April.

Kofi Kingston: They Said I Was Too Small To Make It In WWE, Now They Want My Autograph

Kofi Kingston says he was originally laughed at by people when he first said he wanted to become a WWE Superstar.

Despite Ric Flair saying that talent like Finn Balor will never reach the upper-levels of WWE due to his size, Kingston has a different message. In an interview with Do Savannah to promote Saturday’s live event in Savannah, GA, Kingston offered advice to kids who want to pursue a career as a WWE Superstar.

“I always said I would be a WWE Superstar, and they laughed at me,” Kofi said. “They looked at me and said I was too small. You have to be 6 feet, 8 inches, you have to be 275 pounds and you can’t be a WWE Superstar.”

Kinsgston joined WWE as a developmental talent in 2006, and has gone on to win the Intercontinental Title, The U.S. Title, and The Tag Team Titles, all multiple times. He is currently part of one of the company’s hottest acts, The New Day.

“Down the line, 15 to 20 years later,” Kingston continued, “those same people are asking me for my autograph.”

Jake Roberts Says He’d Return To WWE If Asked: “Wrestling Needs Some Help Right Now”

WWE Hall of Famer Jake Roberts says he’d be open to returning to WWE television to help however he can.

In an interview with DC 101 FM to promote his new film The Bet, Roberts was asked if he would return to WWE if he got the call.

“I have so many things I want to do, so many things,” Roberts answered. “When I’m sober and clean and my mind’s working, I’m happy and energetic and I know I can fix this and do that. What do you choose? I don’t know. But, if the WWE did call me, yeah, I’d be right back in there man because I love wrestling and the Lord knows wrestling needs some help right now.”

Roberts also talked about his previous film, the documentary about his comeback The Resurrection Of Jake The Snake Roberts. Roberts says he struggled with doing the movie in the beginning, and referenced being “burned” by the producers of Beyond The Mat. He says doing it with DDP and being given control of the movie put him at ease.

“If I didn’t want it to come out, it wouldn’t come out,” Roberts said of his creative control. “Trust was a big part of it and once I saw the final product, I thought, ‘you know what, this is going to help so many people.'”

Roberts also talked about missing the late Dusty Rhodes and “Rowdy” Roddy Piper, saying they are both irreplaceable. He says there will never be anybody else like Piper or Rhodes again, and that it blows his mind that he’s still alive and they aren’t.

More Backstage News On Why The Women’s Title Changed Hands On RAW

It sounds like former WWE Women’s Champion Charlotte may not have requested time off from the road after all.

Regarding reports that Charlotte dropped the Women’s title before originally planned at SummerSlam due to wanting time off, PWInsider.com reported on Friday that Charlotte is still scheduled for all future bookings. She reportedly did not request time off, nor were there any internal discussions by management about her being written off TV.

PWInsider reports that two factors contributed to putting the Women’s Title on Sasha Banks before SummerSlam. One was to kick off the first RAW of the “new era” with a surprise title change, and another reason was that company chairman Vince McMahon felt Charlotte had established the title enough for a change of hands now. Vince is said to be a fan of Charlotte and plans to keep her as a main character on TV.

Triple H is reportedly Sasha Banks’ biggest fan within management. Back in May it was reported that Vince McMahon has concerns about Sasha being injury-prone.
