WWE Smackdown Reaction (7/26)

This week’s episode of Smackdown Live kicked off with Shane McMahon and Daniel Bryan joining the entire roster in the ring. Shane McMahon announced that on September 11th, Smackdown Live will have it’s first exclusive PPV entitled Backlash. Shane McMahon introduces Dean Ambrose as the undisputed WWE Champion and he joins the roster in the ring. Ambrose stated that he up for a new challenge and wanted to know who he will be defending the title against at Summerslam. Daniel Bryan announced that there will be a Six-Pack challenge match to determine the number one contender to the the title. John Cena, Bray Wyatt, Dolph Ziggler, Baron Corbin and AJ Styles are chosen to be in the match. The sixth participant of the match will be the winner of a Battle Royal that will be the first match of the show.

Battle Royal to Join the Six Pack Challenge for #1 Contender

Kane dominates the Battle Royal. Simon Gotch was the first participant eliminated. Kane eliminated both members of The Ascension. Jey Uso was eliminated by Breezango. During the commercial break, Aiden English and Erick Rowan was eliminated by Mojo Rawley. Alberto Del Rio eliminated Mojo Rawley. Del Rio and Breezango were then quickly eliminated. It was down to Kane, Zack Ryder, Kalisto and Apollo Crews. The crowd was heavily behind Zack Ryder. Ryder went to hit the Elbrow on Crews but he slipped and had an ugly looking botch. Kane eliminated Kalisto. Kane Chokeslammed Ryder over the top rope. Kane went to charge at Apollo Crews by the ropes but he ducked and Kane went flying over the top rope.

Winner and the Sixth Participant in the Six-Pack Challenge: Apollo Crews

Reaction: Not a bad way to start off the New Era of Smackdown Live. Apollo Crews was a good choice to win the Battle Royal and between Raw and Smackdown Live, recent NXT call-ups are already making a major impact.

Shelton Benjamin is coming to Smackdown Live soon.

Natalya vs Becky Lynch

Natalya was drawing some boos from the Buffalo crowd as she took it to Becky Lynch early in the match. Natalya went for the Sharpshooter but Becky got out of the hold only to wind up falling victim to a German Suplex from Natalya. Becky Lynch was able to regain control of the match and lock in the Disarmer for the submission victory. After the match, Alexa Bliss comes out and says that she is what the New Era of women’s wrestling. Naomi interrupts Alexa Bliss and tells her to stop bragging when she hasn’t even stepped foot in a WWE ring. Carmella then comes out and is quickly interrupted by Eva Marie who received some boos. Eva Marie didn’t say anything and simply posed at the top of the entrance ramp.

Winner: Becky Lynch

Reaction: Becky gets her revenge on Natalya after she lost to her at Battleground. The promo after the match was a good way to introduce the audience to the new female wrestlers on the roster. The Eva Marie intro was pretty ridiculous and amusing.

The Miz came out for a Miz TV segment. He announced that he will be interviewing himself. The Miz literally asked a question in one seat and then changed seats to answer his own question. The Miz claimed that he is everything the average person is not. He is a movie star and a WWE Superstar. The Miz then went to kiss Maryse, but was interrupted by Randy Orton. Randy Orton called The Miz an expert at playing with himself. Randy Orton once again stated that it only takes one RKO to send Brock Lesnar to “Viperville”. Randy Orton then challenged The Miz to a match. Predictably, the Miz rejected Orton’s challenge. Randy Orton then asked if The Miz was scared to lose a match in front of his wife. Maryse then grabbed the microphone and accepted the match on behalf of The Miz. It was quite clear that The Miz wanted no part of it but he had no choice at this point.

Randy Orton vs The Miz

The Miz immediately rolled out of the ring in an effort to avoid Orton. The Miz then rolled back in the ring and tossed Orton outside the ring. Orton had a rough landing on his injured shoulder. The Miz began targeting Orton’s shoulder and took complete control of the match. The Miz sent Orton flying into the steel steps outside the ring. The Miz rolled Orton back into the ring and then rolled in himself. As The Miz was getting to his feet, Orton grabbed him and hit an RKO out of nowhere. Orton then stalked The Miz and waited for him to get to his feet. Orton then hit a second RKO for the victory.

Winner: Randy Orton

Reaction: There has been a tremendous amount of talking on this show so far. The Orton/Miz match was solid and it set up the fact that Orton can take a lot of punishment, but all he needs to do is hit an RKO to win a match. Orton will face Lesnar at Summerslam and will most likely take a trip to Suplex City. However, if Orton hits an RKO out of nowhere, he could possibly defeat Lesnar. That pretty much was the point of this match, The Miz dominated but still lost due to the RKO. I would have preferred the New Era of Smackdown Live to start off with something other than the Intercontinental Champion being fed to Randy Orton, but it is what it is.

Heath Slater interrupted the show and grabbed a microphone. Slater was enraged that neither Monday Night Raw or Smackdown Live drafted. Shane McMahon came out and Heath Slater claimed that he was looking at the hottest free agent in sports entertainment today (referring to himself). Shane agreed, but Slater was unaware that Rhyno had appeared behind him. When Slater turned around he was greeted with a Gore from Rhyno.

Six-Pack Challenge to Determine the #1 Contender to WWE Championship: Bray Wyatt vs Apollo Crews vs Baron Corbin vs Dolph Ziggler vs John Cena

Bray Wyatt went right after Cena at the start of the match but the action was interrupted by a commercial break 10 seconds into the main event. When Smackdown Live returned, Bray Wyatt and AJ Styles were working together. Styles and Wyatt took turns beating down Apolo Crews. Their alliance didn’t last too long because Bray Wyatt laid out Styles. Apollo Crews then hit three German Suplexes in a row on Styles, with the third one sending AJ flying across the ring. Baron Corbin then took control of the match. After the commercial break, it once again was down to Corbin and Crews in the ring. Baron Corbin was beginning to get frustrated at the fact that he couldn’t keep Crews down. Apollo Crews hit Corbin with a Powerbomb and was about to win the match when Bray Wyatt pulled the referee out of the ring. Bray Wyatt then hit the Sister Abigail on Crews. Dolph Ziggler hit the Zig Zag on Wyatt. Cena then hit the Attitude Adjustment on Ziggler. Cena then hit another Attitude Adjustment, this time on AJ Styles and went for the pinfall. AJ Styles kicked out at the very last second. Cena then hit an Attitude Adjustment on Wyatt and another one on Apollo Crews. AJ Styles then hit a Phenomenal Forearm on Cena that knocked him out of the ring. When Styles turned around, he was hit with a massive Super Kick by Ziggler. Dolph Ziggler then pinned AJ Styles for the victory. After the match, Dean Ambrose came down to the ring and had a stare down with Ziggler. Daniel Bryan then came down to ring and raised both Ziggler and Ambrose’s hands. Shane McMahon then came down and joined the party.

Winner and #1 Contender for the WWE Championship: Dolph Ziggler

Reaction: It was pretty much impossible to follow the show put on by Monday Night Raw last night. While Raw was certainly the better show this week, I am intrigued by the direction of Smackdown Live. Hopefully, Dolph Ziggler will finally get the shot many in the WWE Universe have felt he has deserved for a long time. I thought for sure Bray Wyatt would win the main event, but Ziggler was a pleasant surprise. This week’s Smackdown Live was definitely better than most episodes of Smackdown in recent memory. Having said that, Monday Night Raw was the better show in the first week after the draft.

What did you think of this week’s episode of Smackdown Live? Which show did you enjoy more, Monday Night Raw or Smackdown Live? Let us know in the comments below.

– Shane McMahon and Daniel Bryan welcome us to SmackDown to kick off the show, and we get a new intro video. The whole roster is surrounding the ring while Shane and Daniel address the crowd. Shane announces that the first SmackDown-only pay per view will be Backlash. Shane says they’re going to find an opponent for Dean Ambrose at Summerslam. Daniel Bryan says there will be a six-pack challenge #1 contenders match. Bryan and McMahon announce the wrestlers for the challenge: John Cena, Bray Wyatt, Dolph Ziggler, Baron Corbin, and AJ Styles. Bryan says the sixth spot is open to the winner of a battle royal tonight, and that’s up next.

Battle Royal: Kane eliminates Simon Gotch just moments into the match. He eliminates both members of The Ascension next. Jey Uso is eliminated next by both members of Breezango. Ryder and Crews team up to eliminate Del Rio, and that leaves them in the ring with only Kane and Kalisto. Ryder, Crews and Kalisto all take turns working on Kane, then turn their attention to each other. Kane finally gets up then eliminates Kalisto. Ryder hits the Broski Boot on both Kane and Crews, but then Kane chokeslams him out of the ring. Kane goes to do the same to Crews, but Crews escapes Kane’s hold and eliminates him. Crews is now in the six pack challenge to determine the #1 contender for Dean Ambrose’s World Heavyweight Title. Winner: Apollo Crews

– We get a promo video announcing Shelton Benjamin’s return to SmackDown “coming soon.”

Becky Lynch def. Natalya: The match opens up with some back and forth action between Natalya and Becky, but eventually Natalya seems to get the upper hand after throwing Becky off the top rope to the mat. Becky mounts a comeback and hits a splash off the top rope for a near-fall. Natalya comes back with a German suplex for a near-fall of her own. Becky gets out of a Sharpshooter attempt and locks Natalya in the Dis-arm-her for the win. After the match, Alexa Bliss comes out and cuts a promo on Becky. Alexa is then interrupted by Naomi who tells her to stop running her mouth. Eva Marie is out next and she stands on the stage and looks at the rest of them.

– The Miz is out next for Miz TV. He says that his guest tonight is himself, and he starts cutting a promo about how great he is. Randy Orton comes out to interrupt and says he wants a match tonight. Orton challenges The Miz, and Miz declines. Orton talks to some trash to Miz and Maryse, and Maryse accepts on The Miz’s behalf. Orton vs. Miz is up next.

Randy Orton def. The Miz: The Miz rolls to the outside early on to have words with Maryse. Back in the ring, The Miz throws Orton to the outside and Orton sells his shoulder. Miz beats down Orton at ringside, then continues the offense back in the ring. Orton comes back with an RKO out of nowhere, but doesn’t go for the pin. Orton waits for The Miz to start getting up, then gives him a second RKO for the win.

– Heath Slater comes in from the crowd into the ring and beats up an unknown wrestler who was already in the ring. He grabs the mic and complains about not being drafted to either RAW or SmackDown. He says he wants to be in the main event tonight for the #1 contendership. Shane McMahon comes out on the stage to talk to him, but so does Rhyno from behind. Gore! Rhyno takes out Slater, and Shane says Rhyno is the hottest free agent in wrestling.

Dolph Ziggler def. AJ Styles vs. Apollo Crews vs. Baron Corbin vs. Bray Wyatt vs. John Cena: The winner of this six-man match gets a shot at Dean Ambrose’s World Heavyweight Title at SummerSlam. AJ and Bray team up against Crews for a while, then Bray turns on AJ. Ziggler starts working on Bray until Corbin pulls him to the outside and beats him down. Back in the ring, AJ hits a springboard 450 splash on Bray but Cena breaks up the pin. AJ hits a fireman’s carry into a neckbreaker on Cena, then Crews hits a series of German suplexes on AJ. Corbin starts beating down Crews while everyone else is laid out at ringside. He goes for the Deep Six but Crews gets out and hits a powerbomb for a near-fall. Bray hits the Sister Abigail on Corbin, AJ hits the Pele kick on Bray, then Cena hits the AA on Styles for a 2 count. Cena hits the AA on Crews, then Wyatt, then Corbin. Cena turns around into a Phenomenal Forearm from AJ, and AJ turns around into a superkick from Ziggler. Ziggler covers AJ immediately and scores the pinfall victory.

– After the match, Ambrose comes out to confront Zigger. Daniel Bryan separates them, then Shane McMahon joins to congratulate Ziggler to close out the show.

Mick Foley Reveals His Wish For SmackDown, Says The Competition Between Brands Is Real

WWE RAW General Manager Mick Foley has posted a new blog on his Facebook page detailing his wish for SmackDown. Foley says the competition between WWE’s brands and their respective authority figures is very real. He wrote:

MY SMACKDOWN WISH

Make no mistake about it – the competition between#RAW and #SmackdownLIVE is real. The competition between Stephanie McMahon and Shane McMahon is very real, and to some extent, so is the competition between me and Daniel Bryan. No one wants to be minded constantly by their own son that the other general manager is more popular than you are. But you’d be wrong if you think I want #SmackdownLIVE to fail. I think it’s fair to say that Stephanie and I – along with the #WWE Superstars – hit it out of the park (a baseball reference for my cricket-playing friends in the British Commonwealth countries) last night on #RAW. Between the incredible emotion of the Sasha Banks victory, the star-making debut of Finn Balor and the new look and feel of the show, it was a towering homerun for the #RAW team. But I won’t be rooting for #SmackdownLIVE to strike out tonight, or any Tuesday night. I sincerely want Daniel, Shane and the entire crew to hit it out of the park every week. Then we’ll take those figurative tape-measures out, and figure out whose towering homerun traveled further. If you think it’s #SmackdownLive, I’m afraid the answer is going to be NO, NO, NO! The tale of the tape will answer MICK and STEPH, STEPH, STEPH!

#1 Contender To WWE Champion Dean Ambrose To Be Named Tonight On SmackDown Live

Shane McMahon will name a new #1 contender to Dean Ambrose’s WWE Championship tonight on SmackDown Live. The wording of his tweet implies that the challenger will actually be “named” as opposed to a #1 contender’s match being held, but we’ll find out in a matter of hours. The match will likely take place at SummerSlam.

Heath Slater, who went un-drafted last week, declared himself a free agent and is said to be taking bookings with indy promotions, is teasing that he might also make an appearance:

WWE RAW Viewership For The First Post-Draft Episode

Monday’s episode of WWE RAW averaged 3.338 million viewers, up from last week’s 3.133 million viewers.

  • Hour 1: 3.412 million
  • Hour 2: 3.350 million
  • Hour 3: 3.254 million

RAW ranked #12 for the night in viewership and #4 in the 18-49 demographic, due to coverage of the DNC.

Stephanie McMahon On Why She Thinks Her Character Makes Babyface Wrestlers Look Better

WWE recently uploaded some highlights from Stephanie McMahon’s Facebook Q&A over the weekend. During the Q&A, Stephanie spoke about playing a heel on RAW and how she feels her character helps get the wrestlers over.

“The better I make the babyface – the good guy or good girl – look, the more hated I am, and the more I can ultimately make that person look more like a hero,” Stephanie explained.

Stephanie added that playing the heel is the “most fun” for her, and that she likes getting booed. She says that her kids don’t yet understand why she chooses that role, they understand that she’s just playing a character.

Back in May, former World Heavyweight Champion Batista took issue with Stephanie’s heel “finishing move,” the slap to the face. In a post on his official Twitter account, Batista took issue with the move and seems to feel her hitting the wrestlers buries them. Here’s what he had to say:

Backstage News On Randy Orton’s Joke About Brock Lesnar’s Failed Drug Test

During Randy Orton’s return at Sunday’s Battleground pay-per-view, Orton popped the crowd with a joke about Brock Lesnar’s recent failed drug test. “It only takes one RKO to get to Viperville, no enhancement needed,” Orton said during The Highlight Reel with Chris Jericho on Sunday.

The remark was in reference to Brock Lesnar testing positive for performance enhancing drugs at UFC 200, where he was victorious over Mark Hunt. The United States Anti-Doping Agency says Lesnar tested positive on June 28th, and again on July 9th – the night of UFC 200. According to ESPN, the flagged substance was clomiphene, the same anti-estrogen blocker Jon Jones tested positive for.

Dave Meltzer offered an update on this on Tuesday’s episode of Wrestling Observer Newsletter, addressing speculation that it may have been an off-script remark by Orton. Meltzer reports that the line was planned by whoever worked with Orton on his script for the night, and the whole segment went according to plan. It’s unknown if WWE consulted with Lesnar before airing the remark.

This was WWE’s second time this month making light of a performer failing a drug test, after Seth Rollins cut several promos on RAW about Roman Reigns failing a Wellness Policy test.

Lesnar returns to WWE television on next week’s RAW in Atlanta for the first time since WrestleMania 32.
