The Shield: WWE Reportedly Planning Big Spot At Upcoming PPV

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZxJDJf_G5Eo

The Shield might be riding again in the near future, even if it’s just for a night.

With Seth Rollins, Roman Reigns and Dean Ambrose currently positioned as babyfaces, the Wrestling Observer Newsletter says there’s been talk behind the scenes of doing a big spot involving all three former Shield members at an upcoming WWE PPV. Rollins and Reigns being on RAW and Dean Ambrose being on SmackDown means the Shield spot would take place at a joint-brand pay-per-view, such as Survivor Series or the Royal Rumble.

Aside from a few limited interactions, WWE has kept former Shield members – as a trio – apart or at odds since they broke up over two years ago. Back in June, The Shield briefly reunited on the Ambrose Asylum to promote Reigns’ WWE World Heavyweight Championship defense against Seth Rollins at Money in the Bank. At the PPV, Ambrose won the Money in the Bank ladder match, Rollins defeated Reigns for the belt, Ambrose cashed in and defeated Rollins, leading all three former Shield members to hold the championship on the same night. WWE later pulled the trigger on the coveted Shield triple threat match at July’s Battleground PPV, but all 3 men being on the same page has been for the most part protected.

Back in April, Roman Reigns appeared on the Ring Rust Radio show and commented on a potential reunion of The Shield:

“I’ll always hold the Shield close to the heart. I think we can all say that’s the vehicle that got us out of the warehouse. We spent many hours in that hot, Tampa warehouse trying to get to this point. I definitely one day would want to do it but I don’t see it anytime soon. I think that’s what makes the Shield different is we all broke out and were able to maintain the level of success that we had within the group but now we are doing it as individuals. It’s really nice to be the quarterback out there. You don’t always have to worry and coordinate with everybody else. You just go out there, do your thing, beat some ass, and go home. I always enjoy that part of it. I think the Shield was so special that one day we will have to get it back together.”

WWE Testing The Waters With Hulk Hogan, Future NXT Takeover Locations More

– WWE appears to be testing the waters with phasing Hulk Hogan back into company programming. Over the past week, multiple Hogan voice overs were used on the latest WWE Network promos. This is the first time Hogan has been heard on WWE TV since his racism scandal, which led WWE to cut all ties with him. The latest episode of Eric Bischoff’s Bischoff On Wrestling podcast featured Part 3 of his interview with Hogan, who said he still keeps up with WWE RAW and hopes to get back in their good graces.

– Former two-time NCAA heavyweight champion Nick Gwiazdowski is expected to receive a WWE offer after the 2020 Olympics, according to the Wrestling Observer Newsletter. He sat ringside for WWE Backlash on Sunday.

– In addition to the NXT Takeover: Toronto event that is scheduled for Survivor Series weekend, WWE is also looking at The Theater at Madison Square Garden and venues in Boston for upcoming Takeover specials. (via f4wonline.com)

Vince McMahon: Injury Update, More Missed Shows

As WWE announced earlier this week, Vince McMahon was scheduled to undergo surgery for an injury sustained while weight training. Aside from us knowing that Vince tore one of his quads doing squats, details are sketchy because Vince wanted to keep the story as quiet as possible.

Vince missed Backlash, RAW and Smackdown this week, according to the Wrestling Observer Newsletter. The 71-year-old WWE CEO was said to be squatting a significant amount of weight, something most people stop doing in their 30’s and 40’s due to strain on the body.

Vince still lifting such heavy weights and WWE putting out an announcement stating he’d be back in the office right after surgery is being seen as a sign that he’s “still Vince” and not really showing signs of slowing down.

Finn Balor Updates Fans On His Recovery & WWE Return (Video)

Finn Balor says he’s just under 5 months away from returning to the ring.

In the video above from the WWE Performance Center, Balor says he hopes to be back in time for WrestleMania 33 next year. He’s scheduled to fly to Birmingham, Alabama next week for a week of therapy there and hopes to see the surgeon who did the shoulder operation on him.

Balor talks about going back home to Orlando and coming to terms with everything that happened in Brooklyn last month. Balor also thanks the fans for their humbling support, saying they made the process a lot easier.

Balor also mentions that he will be backstage at SmackDown when they are in Alabama next week.

Heath Slater Makes History, WWE CWC Bonus Match, WWE Backlash Social Stats

– This past weekend’s WWE Backlash event ranked #2 in Nielsen’s Social Media ratings, behind the 2017 Miss America pageant. Backlash featured more than 282K Twitter Interactions with 44K unique users, whereas Facebook got 278K interactions from 144K unique users. It’s interesting to note that WWE pay-per-views don’t always make the cut, and the last event to rank in the Nielson ratings was Battleground.

– Heath Slater is not only one of the first-ever Smackdown Tag Team Champions, but the only man in company history to hold the newly created blue belt as well as the established tag team titles currently showcased on RAW. Prior to his reign with Rhyno, Heath Slater was WWE Tag Team Champions with former Superstar Justin Gabriel.

AJ Styles vs. Dean Ambrose News, Curt Hawkins’ WWE Status & Vignette, The Rock

– As previously reported, AJ Styles will defend his WWE World Championship in a triple threat match against John Cena and Dean Ambrose at No Mercy on 10/9. It should be noted that on Smackdown, Shane McMahon mentioned Dean receiving a one-on-one rematch somewhere down the line, after losing the title to Styles this past Sunday. With John Cena taking time off soon and the unlikelihood that Styles drops the title after a month, it looks like we could see Styles vs. Ambrose at Survivor Series in November.

– The Rock is scheduled to appear on “Good Morning America” this Thursday to unveil the first trailer for his Disney animated movie, “Moana.” Below is the new poster for the film:

– Despite announcing Curt Hawkins for this week’s episode of Smackdown, the former Major Brother did not appear in the arena. At least not on Smackdown. Hawkins defeated local enhancement talent Brandon Scott in a dark match, and later appeared on the live broadcast in a vignette. Hawkins’ win over Scott was his first WWE match since February 3rd, 2014.

WWE No Mercy: Women’s Championship Match Confirmed

WWE just confirmed that Becky Lynch will defend the SmackDown Women’s Championship against Alexa Bliss at the 10/9 No Mercy PPV from Sacramento. Alexa won a Fatal 5 Way on last night’s SmackDown to earn the shot.

The SmackDown Women’s Championship match is in addition to the main event, which was confirmed on last night’s show. WWE World Heavyweight Champion AJ Styles will defend against John Cena and Dean Ambrose in a triple threat match.

WWE SmackDown Viewership For Post-Backlash Episode

This week’s WWE SmackDown drew 2.658 million viewers, up from last week’s 2.454 million viewers. By comparison, Monday’s RAW did 2.69 million viewers.

SmackDown featured fallout from Sunday’s Backlash PPV and a main event. The main event saw John Cena and Dean Ambrose defeat WWE Champion AJ Styles and IC Champion The Miz.

SmackDown was #5 for the night in viewership and #1 in the 18-49 demographic.

Paige Issues Statement Regarding Her WWE Wellness Policy Violation

Paige issued the following statement on Monday afternoon addressing her WWE Wellness Policy violation and reports that she is leaving WWE:

“First, I’d like to thank all my fans for their love and support the last few weeks. Let me begin by saying that the rumors I’m leaving the WWE are completely false! I certainly look forward to returning back to action at some point, once my injury is treated and on a healthy return. Although I was disappointed by my suspension, I respect the WWE’s Wellness Policy. However, let me be clear that I was not suspended for failing a drug test, it was merely a procedural issue. I took the test, I passed it. I arranged said test to happen after I wasn’t at my home when Aegis contacted me. So I drove 200 miles to do it. Unfortunately I didn’t do it in time, according to Aegis. Once again, thank you for all the love and support!”

As noted earlier, Paige is scheduled to return to WWE television this coming Monday on RAW.

Student Dies After Suffering Medical Emergency At Seth Rollins’ Wrestling School

A student at Seth Rollins’ The Black & The Brave Wrestling Academy died last Thursday after suffering a medical emergency at the facility, according to ABC affiliate WKBW out of Buffalo, NY.

20-year-old Jonah Snyder was training at Black and Brave in  Moline, Illinois last when he started to feel ill. According to Rock Island County coroner Brian Gustafson, instructors told Snyder sit down. Snyder’s condition continued to worsen and trainers called 911. Paramedics arrived and Snyder went into cardiac arrest.

He was taken to the Genesis Medical Center where he was pronounced dead.

An autopsy conducted last Friday was inconclusive. Moline Police continue to investigate the situation.

Daniel Bryan Comments On CM Punk’s Loss At UFC 203

During an interview with The Philly Voice to promote Tuesday’s SmackDown Live, Daniel Bryan spoke about CM Punk getting wrecked at UFC 203 this past weekend.

“I have the utmost respect for him trying to go do it.”

Bryan shed some light on their friendship, explaining they’ve never been best friends and he’s not even sure if he’s got Punk’s number in his phone. However he did watch the fight and he was pulling for Punk. “I was really hoping he would win,” Bryan said. “The reality is that even though he lost, he was dead on in his promo afterwards. It’s the whole thing with me and him, and guys like Sami Zayn and Neville even trying to wrestle. Right? It’s just this idea of you have this dream that everybody tells you that you can’t do, but you just keep going after it. Sometimes, you’re not successful, right? He wasn’t “successful” in the fight. But he fought a professional fight in UFC. That’s crazy! You know? It’s crazy and it’s awesome and he may have lost and he may have gotten beat up, but hey, he tried it.”

Bryan is no stranger to martial arts. He trains trains in jiu jitsu and muay thai and most of the people who he trains with would never attempt fighting professionally. At 37 years old, CM Punk was on the older side to be getting into the fight game. Bryan says that adds even more to the respectability of what Punk attempted.

“At that age, and I know at my age and how many injuries I have, just getting up out of bed every morning, you know, for the most part, I feel really good. But then to get up and go train with killers – that camp is a great camp. And so you go in there and train with great guys and getting beat up every day. It’s tough. That’s the job. The job is getting beat up every day. And right towards the fight, then you have to lose a bunch of weight. So, it’s like, ‘OK I get beat up every day, now go lose 15 pounds. Oh, just like that? Oh, OK.’”

Shinsuke Nakamura On Wrestling Brock Lesnar Again, Working With Samoa Joe, More

Channel Guide Magazine has published a new interview with NXT Champion Shinsuke Nakamura. Topics discussed include his experience in NXT and at the WWE Performance Center, his feud with Samoa Joe and wanting to face Brock Lesnar.

As a child growing up in Japan, Nakamura liked wrestling, but wasn’t really a fan of WWE. “Japan had a huge wrestling culture. So I was not really a fan of WWE as a child,” he said. “It was much different than the Japanese style before. We had foreign wrestlers who came from America, Europe. Everyone from all over also ended up going to WWE. I did like Andre the Giant. I can’t imagine what it would be like to fight with him. I want to fight like him.”

Nakamura is at the WWE Performance Center almost every single day. In training there, he’s had a chance to improve his skills by working with veteran trainers like Terry Taylor as well as some of NXT’s younger wrestlers. “I have gotten a chance to talk with Terry Taylor. His opinion has been very interesting for me. He knows there is a psychology and certain things American fans like. I really enjoy studying from him…Most NXT guys are young guys. They keep me young working with them. They challenge me in a different way. I can teach them and also can study. I learn from them.”

Takeover: Brooklyn II saw Shinsuke Nakamura defeat Samoa Joe to capture the NXT championship. They’ve been feuding for several months in NXT and Nakamura says he’s quite familiar with Joe and hsi style. “I know his technique. He has good technique. He has this rare technique that is strong with not only wrestling, but MMA fighting. I also know similar techniques, so it’s nice to face him in NXT. He is a big challenge.”

One WWE Superstar Nakamura would like the chance to work with is Brock Lesnar. The two actually wrestled once before in New Japan, with Brock Lesnar besting the Japanese sensation back in January 2006. When Nakamura makes it to the main roster, a showdown with Brock Lesnar is one of the biggest marquee matches WWE could promote. Nakamura’s into it.

“If I get a chance, I would be up for that. My body would need to be ready because he is tough. Ouch.”

Daniel Bryan Hopes To Wrestle Again, Still Considers Asking For His WWE Release

Daniel Bryan says he plans to wrestle again one day and would have pushed for his WWE release to work on the independent scene if it wasn’t for his family.

AP Sports Writer Dan Gelston got some quotes from Bryan earlier this week, who was in Philadelphia this week for Tuesday’s SmackDown Live. Prior to SmackDown, Bryan threw the opening pitch prior to Monday’s Philadelphia Phillies baseball game. In promoting SmackDown, Bryan spoke at length about the 10+ documented concussions and at least four post-concussion seizures that forced him into retirement. As bad as all that sounds, Bryan says there are still doctors who say he’s healthy enough to wrestle.

“All the real concussion specialists who deal with concussions every day, all of them think I am fine,” he said.  Daniel Bryan understands WWE’s position. Even if a dozen doctors give him the green light to wrestle, the media would bury WWE if something were to happen to him.

He’s under contract with WWE for two more years and didn’t have a choice regarding his new position as SmackDown’s General Manager. Daniel Bryan enjoys the role, but still gets so frustrated at times that he wants to leave the company. “There are times I just get all worked up and I’m like, I need to call them and I’m just going to ask for my release,” he said.

If Daniel Bryan didn’t have a family who care so deeply for him, he might quit by now so he could get back in the ring elsewhere.  “Hell, I might even be wearing a mask at an independent show next week dressed up as Star Man,” he said. “Because it’s what I love to do. But, it becomes different when you have a wife and you’re trying to have kids.”

WWE Smackdown Reaction (9/13)

This week’s episode of Smackdown started off with the new WWE World Champion AJ Styles addressing the WWE Universe. Styles boasted about his victory against Dean Ambrose at Backlash. AJ Styles started referring to himself as “the champ that runs the camp”. John Cena then interupted and stated that Styles had something that belonged to him. Styles then took off Cena’s “never give up” arm band and threw it at Cena’s face. Cena then claimed that Styles still had something that belonged to him and pointed to the WWE World Championship. John Cena stated that he had one goal left in the WWE and that was to be the 16 time WWE Champion. Dean Ambrose then came down to the ring and got right in Styles’ face. Ambrose told Styles that he was now his enemy and that he was going to make his life a living hell. Ambrose went on to complain about the low-blow Styles hit him with at Backlash which prompted Cena to get in Ambrose’s face. Cena then stated that Ambrose hung Styles up on the rope by his jewels and he found it ridiculous that Ambrose would be complaining about a low-blow. Cena then hit Ambrose with a brutal insult. Cena stated that Stone Cold was right about Dean Ambrose. He told Ambrose that he has done nothing but drop the ball since becoming WWE World Champion. Cena then said that he was surprised that low-blow from Styles even hurt Ambrose, given the fact that he has shown no balls the past few weeks. Ambrose then got in Cena’s face and claimed that he didn’t give a damn what Cena thought about him. Ambrose then called Cena a lazy part-timer.

Shane McMahon then came down to the ring and set up the main-event for No Mercy. At No Mercy, AJ Styles will defend his title against John Cena and Dean Ambrose in a triple threat match. McMahon also made the main-event for tonight’s episode of Smackdown. It will be Dean Ambrose teaming up with John Cena to face Styles and a partner of his choosing. If Styles cannot find a tag team partner, Smackdown GM Daniel Bryan would then appoint him one.

Reaction: This was an excellent promo to kick off Smackdown. The confrontation between Ambrose and Styles was the most interesting and heated part of it. The main-event at No Mercy is already looking good and has more an interesting angle than most of the feuds on the Clash of Champions card that is taking place in less than two weeks.

The Usos vs Hype Bros

The Usos defeated the Hype Bros at Backlash and had absolutely no problem defeating them tonight. The Hype Bros put up much more of a fight at Backlash. The Usos were dominant in this match and the Hype Bros looked like they didn’t belong in the ring with them.

Winners: The Usos

The Miz and Maryse came down to the ring. The Miz stated that for the past few weeks, Daniel Bryan and Dolph Ziggler have been calling him a coward. The Miz then stated that people can refer to him as whatever they want because he is still the Intercontinental Champion. Miz then claimed that he has made the Intercontinental Championship more prestigious than it ever has been. Ziggler then interrupted and claimed that the WWE Universe will never see The Miz as a top guy. The Miz then stated that he would never live and die by the opinions of the WWE Universe. The Miz claimed that if he did that, his career would be six feet under like Ziggler’s career. Dolph then challenged The Miz to another match and asked for no interference. Maryse then grabbed the microphone and the crowd booed heavily. Daniel Bryan then came down to the ring and accused Maryse of cheating at Backlash. Bryan then stated that Ziggler would get his rematch. The Miz interrupted and demanded that his contract be reconstructed. The Miz then claimed that he was calling his own shots and then left with Maryse through the crowd.

AJ Styles was backstage and asked Baron Corbin to his tag team partner tonight. Baron Corbin refused and stated that he would rather be his opponent. Corbin then told Styles that he wanted his title.

Baron Corbin vs Apollo Crews

Apollo Crews was in the middle of his entrance when Baron Corbin attacked him from behind. The match never took place because Corbin hit Crews with the End of Days outside the ring. Jack Swagger then came down to the ring and Corbin took off. Swagger then proceeded to cut a promo and announced that his contract with Raw is up and he is the newest member to the Smackdown roster. The crowd wasn’t really into this segment.

Fatal 5 Way to Determine the #1 Contender to the Smackdown Women’s Championship: Carmella vs Alexa Bliss vs Natalya vs Naomi vs Nikki Bella

Nikki attacked Carmella right when the bell rung. Natalya then hit Carmella with a huge Clothesline. The match went on for several more minutes and it was back and forth. It came down to Nikki Bella and Carmella in the ring. Nikki went for the TKO but Carmella hit her with a Superkick. Alexa Bliss then tossed Carmella outside the ring and pinned Nikki Bella.

Winner & #1 Contender for the Women’s Championship: Alexa Bliss

Reaction: Alexa Bliss is a good choice to go against Becky Lynch. Jack Swagger received virtually no reaction from the crowd at Smackdown. Swagger has always been very talented but has had trouble connecting with the crowd. Hopefully the switch of brands will help him with that. It didn’t start off well tonight but that can change if he is placed in an interesting storyline in the next few weeks.

Shane McMahon came down to the ring and called down Heath Slater and Rhyno. Shane congratulated Heath on earning his contract. Slater then signed his contract and celebrated in the ring. The Ascension then interrupted and the crowd greeted them with a smattering of boos. The Ascension wanted a shot at the Tag Team Championships and Shane McMahon awarded it to them.

WWE Smackdown Tag Team Championship Match: The Ascension vs Heath Slater & Rhyno

The Ascension were dominating Heath Slater early. Slater eventually tagged in Rhyno and beat the hell out of Viktor. Rhyno went for a cover but Konnor broke it up. Heath Slater then jumped on Konnor and they both battled to the outside of the ring. Rhyno then hit the Gore on Viktor for the win.

Winners & Still Tag Team Champions: Heath Slater & Rhyno

AJ Styles asked Kane to be his partner but Kane just laughed in his face and walked away. Daniel Bryan ran into Styles later in the night and said that he has found a partner for him. James Ellsworth then walked into frame and Styles looked disgusted. Ellsworth was one of Braun Strowman’s recent victims on Raw.

Randy Orton came down to the ring to address Bray Wyatt. Orton challenged Wyatt to come down to the ring and face his fear. Bray Wyatt then appeared on a pre-taped video promo. Wyatt claimed that Orton should have just stayed down. Wyatt then told Orton not to sleep. Wyatt then appeared on the announcer’s table behind Orton. The lights went out and when they came back on Erick Rowan was in the ring. Rowan attacked Orton but Randy countered with an RKO out of nowhere.

Reaction: I’m simply not interested in this feud right now. I’ve said it a thousand times but Bray Wyatt needs this victory. If he loses again there is just no reason to take him seriously. I’m already past that point but some still feel like he can be a big star in the WWE. I felt that way a year ago but since then Wyatt hasn’t won anything meaningful and has cut a plethora of ultimately meaningless promos.

John Cena & Dean Ambrose vs AJ Styles & The Miz

James Ellsworth was making his way to the ring but The Miz attacked him from behind. The Miz then shouted that he was the main-event and joined Styles in the ring. Styles and The Miz shook hands and just like that Styles had a new tag team partner.

The Miz was taking it to Cena early on. Miz hit a DDT but Cena kicked out at two. As the referee was distracted, Styles kicked Cena in the face. Miz went to dive onto Cena in the corner but Cena rolled out of the way. Cena was then able to tag in Ambrose and Miz tagged in Styles. Ambrose hit the elbow on Styles from the top rope. Ambrose then beatdown Styles in the corner. The Miz tried to get involved but Ambrose punched him in the face. Ambrose then rolled out of the ring and tossed The Miz into the barricade. Styles then hit the Pele Kick on Ambrose when he rolled back into the ring.

When Smackdown returned from commercial, Ambrose was in control of the match. Cena was pleading for a tag but Ambrose ignored him. The Miz then tagged in Styles who walked over to the corner and hit Cena with a forearm to the face. Styles then started barking at Cena and it allowed Ambrose enough time to recover. Ambrose hit Styles with a couple of chops in the corner but Styles quickly knocked Ambrose to the ground again. Ambrose finally hit Styles with a Swinging Neckbreaker. Ambrose finally tagged in Cena and Styles tagged in The Miz. Cena leveled Miz with a few shoulder blocks and followed it up with the Five-Knuckle Shuffle. Ambrose sent Styles outside the ring and then dove onto him. Cena then hit The Miz with an Attitude Adjustment for the victory.

After the match, Dean Ambrose hit the Dirty Deeds on Cena in the middle of the ring. Ambrose then seemingly taunted the crowd. Ambrose then hovered over Cena and shouted at him to close the show.

Winners: John Cena & Dean Ambrose

Reaction: Smackdown once again put on a solid show. It appears that we will see a new attitude from Dean Ambrose in the next couple of weeks and that is a good thing. On paper, Monday Night Raw has the better roster. Having said that, Smackdown has consistently been the better show since the brand split. Raw was the better show the first week but since then it has been treading water. Kevin Owens winning the Universal Championship was certainly a terrific moment but it was followed up with an extremely lackluster Raw the next week. Smackdown hasn’t been great but it has been consistently good. Tonight’s episode was another solid show and there isn’t really too much to complain about.

What did you think of this week’s episode of Smackdown? Let us know in the comments below.

WWE SmackDown Results & Discussion (9/13)

This week’s live episode of WWE SmackDown aired from the Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia, PA. This is the first episode of SmackDown after Sunday’s Backlash pay-per-view.

– New WWE World Heavyweight Champion AJ Styles comes out to the ring with his belt to open up SmackDown. AJ says he hates to tell us he told us so, but he did, and now he truly is the face that runs the place. John Cena interrupts and comes out to the ring. Cena says AJ has something that belongs to him, and he wants it back. AJ throws his headband in Cena’s face, but Cena clarifies that he was talking about the title belt. Cena says he wants to hold the World Heavyweight Title as many times as Ric Flair, so he needs to beat AJ for the strap. Dean Ambrose interrupts before AJ can answer. Ambrose says AJ stole from him by hitting him with a low blow in the match, and says now he is officially enemies with AJ and he promises to make his life miserable.
