Breaking: Pro Wrestling NOAH Purchased By Japanese IT Company…Not NJPW

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8UaNiHi-KLY

Enuhito, one of the most reliable denizens of Wrestling Twitter for Japanese to English translations, tweeted some big news later Monday night, which he sourced from Tokyo Sports:

Pro Wrestling NOAH had been, at different times, either the biggest or second biggest pro wrestling promotion in Japan dating back to not long after its debut in August of 2000. The company launched after the death of promoter Shohei “Giant” Baba caused turmoil on All Japan Pro Wrestling, leading to almost the entire roster and office staff, led by top star Mitsuharu Misawa, breaking away. The company didn’t immediately get network TV due to the nature of the deals that were made, but NOAH eventually landed AJPW’s old slot on Nippon TV.

After a few years, the combination of the network TV deal, a fresh product, New Japan Pro Wrestling’s downturn, and Kenta Kobashi replacing Misawa as top babyface led to a huge boom in business. While it’s hard to gauge specifics due to the way that numbers are exaggerated, NOAH’s two shows at the Tokyo Dome were among the biggest wrestling cards in the building’s history. They legitimately packed the stadium, and unlike other promotions, NOAH lit up the building like a Christmas tree so you could tell on TV.

The downfall of the company started with Misawa’s in-ring death in 2009. The network TV deal went away a year later due to budget cuts, which dealt a huge blow in both exposure (cable and satellite pay TV are not prominent in Japan) and direct revenue (NTV heavily subsidized all TV tapings). The company was no longer a superpower.

A few years ago, NJPW started funding the company in some form, eventually making it more obvious by sending Minoru Suzuki’s Suzuki Gun stable over to boost business. Around the same time, Super Crazy, who had worked for NOAH for years on and off, did an interview where he suggested the two promotions were one company. NJPW co-booker Jado started booking NOAH. It all appeared to be leading to something more official when NOAH’s existing TV contracts (on cable/satellite and enhanced digital broadcast channels) expired, but now, that doesn’t appear to be the case.

Analysis: Clearly, there’s something missing here. NJPW was not mentioned once in the Tokyo Sports article. Maybe the idea was just to get NOAH into good enough shape that the company could find a corporate savior, but that’s not how NJPW has treated NOAH for the last couple years. There was a distinct change from NOAH being just like every other company that’s friendly with NJPW to being on that NJPW was seemingly pouring resources (both financial and talent-wise) into and was reluctant to pull those out. This should be a very interesting story to track in the next few weeks.

Maria Kanellis Bennett Announces Upcoming Retirement From Pro Wrestling

Just hours after her husband, Mike Bennett, appeared to make it clear what he thinks of today’s TNA news, Maria Kanellis Bennett tweeted a multi-part message on Monday night not long after Raw started:

https://twitter.com/MariaLKanellis/status/793242751961862145

https://twitter.com/MariaLKanellis/status/793243837074374656

https://twitter.com/MariaLKanellis/status/793244585803804672

Granted, she’s not retiring right away. Still, it’s not like retirement tours are new in the wrestling business, either.

Analysis: As noted earlier in the post about Mike Bennett’s tweet, the married couple came into TNA under the new type of contract that the company started offering this year. The idea was for TNA to be able to offset good guaranteed money by booking talent out to independent promotions, but it appears that the prices being charged by the promotion were not competitive enough to get most indies to bite.

With wrestler paychecks being late and/or bouncing at least twice over the court of the last three pay periods, you can see why someone in TNA would become disillusioned with the business, especially when both halves of a marriage are having the same pay issues. If you have options, and Maria clearly feels like she does, then maybe a way out sounds awfully good right now.

While she never turned into  great mechanical pro wrestler, Maria absolutely doesn’t get enough credit for how good a performer she has become in all other facets.. In one sense, it will be a shame to see her go, but I hope she does great in the next stage of her life and we should all respect her decision, especially under the current circumstances for TNA roster members.

Goldberg Takes Out Rusev & Paul Heyman On RAW (Video)

Goldberg returned to WWE TV on tonight’s RAW from Hartford and ended up taking out Rusev with a Jackhammer and Paul Heyman with a spear before the segment was over.

Heyman interrupted Goldberg’s show-opening promo and teased that Brock Lesnar was coming out to fight. Lesnar never showed but Rusev did. Rusev had words for Goldberg before attacking him. Goldberg fired back with some botched knees and a Jackhammer, then a spear for Heyman.

You can see photos and video from the segment below.

Goldberg and Lesnar are both scheduled to be on the 11/14 RAW from Buffalo. They will wrestle at the 11/20 Survivor Series PPV from Toronto.

Austin Aries Out Of Action For Several Months

The kick to Austin Aries’ face from NXT Champion Shinsuke Nakamura at last Thursday’s house show in Fresno, CA will reportedly have Austin Aries out of action until 2017.

Aries has a large orbital fracture and is scheduled to undergo surgery in Alabama this coming week. He’s expected to be out of action until the first quarter of 2017 some time.

Below is video of the injury and a photo from Aries:

At Least One TNA Wrestler Does Not Seem Happy With Today’s News

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KH0QeI9SAqw

TNA wrestler “Miracle” Mike Bennett tweeted this on Monday afternoon after news broke that Billy Corgan lost his bid to get an injunction against TNA:

Last week, when the two sides were in court, Bennett’s wife and valet, former WWE star Maria Kanellis Bennett, tweeted this:

https://twitter.com/MariaLKanellis/status/791350432476127233

That’s the Twitter handle of Nate Rau, a reporter from the Tennessean newspaper in Nashville, who was live tweeting the hearing. While numerous fans and some wrestlers followed Rau during the hearing, Maria was the only one to openly tweet about what was going on.

It only makes sense: As noted earlier today, checks written to various talent bounced on September 1st. On top of that, Corgan had previously alleged that TNA told the roster that the restraining order/lawsuit was stopping the company from paying them on October 15th. The Bennetts, who left ROH and NJPW, were among the performers who signed with TNA this year for decent sized guarantees with the idea that the company would make it back by booking them out to independent promotions. That has not gone well so far.

WWE RAW Results & Discussion (10/31)

The October 31st, 2016 edition of WWE RAW aired live on the USA Network from the XL Center in Hartford, CT.

– Goldberg’s music hits and the former WWE and WCW Champion will be coming out first to open the show. We see him walking through the back before making his way out to the ring through his pyro. Goldberg gets on the mic and starts to cut a promo on Brock Lesnar, but he very quickly gets interrupted by Paul Heyman. Heyman comes out to the ring and says Lesnar isn’t just a beast, but he’s an impatient beast. He says Lesnar has decided not to wait until Survivor Series, and he introduces his client. Lesnar’s music hits, but The Beast is nowhere to be seen. Heyman laughs behind Goldberg and when the music stops he says “gotcha.” Heyman brags that he fooled every fan in attendance. Goldberg gets in Heyman’s face and Heyman backs down in the corner and begs Goldberg not to hurt him. With this, Rusev comes out to the ring and Goldberg looks ready to fight. Rusev gets on the mic and talks trash to Goldberg until he eventually hits Goldberg with a right hand. Goldberg shakes it off and hits Rusev with some knees then a Jackhammer. Goldberg taunts the crowd, then turns around and spears Paul Heyman.

Enzo Amore def. Luke Gallows: This will be a “Trick of Street Fight”, and the ring and ringside area is decked out in Halloween decorations. Enzo and Cass come out dressed up in costumes from the Toy Story movies. Enzo takes things to ringside and beats Gallows down with a skeleton, then shoves his head in the bowl for bobbing for apples. Gallows comes back and smashes a pumpkin over Enzo’s face. Back in the ring, Anderson tries to get involved, but Enzo hits him in the face with a pumpkin pie then Big Cass boots him off the apron into a table. Enzo low-blows Gallows, then Cass puts a pumpkin over Gallows’ head and Enzo comes off the top with a DDT for the win.

– We see an ambulance backstage and are told that Paul Heyman is inside and is being taken to the hospital.

TJ Perkins def. Brian Kendrick (c): Kendrick cuts a promo before the match saying that Perkins and the fans are too sympathetic and weak-minded. Perkins goes on the offensive right away and hits a kick to the head for a two count early on. After some back and forth action, Perkins hits a missile dropkick off the top then a version of the Codebreaker for a two count. Perkins locks in a knee bar but Kendrick grabs the bottom rope right away to break the hold. Perkins comes off the top rope with a hurricanrana that sends Kendrick flying out to ringside. Perkins rolls inside before the referee counts him out, but Kendrick chooses not to roll in. Perkins wins via countout so the Cruiserweight Title will not change hands.

– Braun Strowman approaches Mick Foley backstage and says he wants to be part of Team RAW at Survivor Series. Foley says he does take Strowman’s threat seriously, so he’ll put Strowman in a Battle Royal tonight where the winner gets a spot on Team RAW at Survivor Series.

– Mick Foley comes out to the ring to discuss last night’s Hell In A Cell pay-per-view, and the upcoming Survivor Series PPV. Foley says he’s proud of everyone except Chris Jericho and Kevin Owens for screwing over Seth Rollins. With that, Jericho and Owens make their way out to the ring to interrupt. Foley says he needs Jericho and Owens on Team RAW at Survivor Series because of how smart and devious they are. Foley says he needs another guy, but not just any guy, the guy. Roman Reigns makes his way to the ring, and thanks Foley for his vote of confidence. Reigns says he was going to dress up as a “stupid idiot” for Halloween, but the store didn’t have any more Jericho costumes. Jericho teases that he’s going to add Roman to his list, but he changes his mind and says Roman isn’t worth of being on the list. Jericho says he’s from Canada and he doesn’t know anything about the U.S. or like anyone in the U.S., but says he would be a better U.S. Champion than Reigns. Jericho says if he wanted, he would take that U.S. Title from Roman tonight. Reigns takes Jericho up on his challenge, and Foley makes it official.

Battle Royal: Several RAW stars are in this one, and the winner will earn himself a spot on Team RAW. R-Truth jumps on Strowman’s back to choke him, but Strowman throws him outside. Strowman eliminates Bo Dallas next with a clothesline, then Cesaro, Sheamus and Sami Zayn take turns working on Strowman. Sheamus and Cesaro team up to eliminate Jinder Mahal, then Sheamus eliminates Darren Young. Strowman hits a splash in the corner on Cesaro, then throws Curtis Axel outside. Sami Zayn eliminates Titus O’Neil with a big boot, then Cesaro eliminates Goldust. Cesaro and Sheamus turn on each other, and Cesaro eliminates Sheamus. Strowman eliminates Cesaro immediately after. The final three are Strowman, Zayn, and Neville. Strowman hits a lariat on Neville then throws him outside. Zayn gets some offense in on Strowman, but Strowman comes back with a big splash in the corner. Strowman goes to throw Zayn outside, but Zayn latches onto Strowman’s head. Zayn has Strowman in a front face lock and almost gets him out, but Strowman overpowers him and throws Zayn outside with authority. Winner: Braun Strowman

– The New Day are backstage dressed as The Godfather, Farooq, and Papa Shango for Halloween. They talk about the upcoming Survivor Series inter-brand matches. Big E says The New Day shall overcome at Survivor Series no matter who they have to face. Correction from SEScoops reader Mark: Big E was dressed as Kama Mustafa, not Farooq.

Rich Swan & Cedric Alexander & Lince Dorado def. Drew Gulak & Tony Neese & Ariya Daivari: Drew Gulak’s entrance video played instead of Cedric Alexander’s. Dorado gets all kinds of offense in on Daivari to kick things off. Swan and Gulak get the tags and Swan hits a big hurricanrana on Gulak. Neese and Alexander are in next and Neese takes control of the match for his team. Daivari tags in and continues working on Alexander until Alexander hits a big kick to the face and tags in Swan. Neese tags in and Swan goes to town on him with kicks and stomps. Swan hits a hurricanrana off the top rope on Neese then a rolling thunder frogsplash for a two count. Alexander and Dorado hit suicide dives over the top rope to the outside on both Daivari and Gulak. Back in the ring, Swan hits a superkick on Neese and rolls him up for the win.

– Charlotte is carried out to the ring next on a platform carried by four guys dressed in ancient Rome style outfits. Charlotte cuts a promo about making history last night at Hell In A Cell, and the women of SmackDown. Charlotte says she doesn’t want Bayley on her team at Survivor Series, and says she would be the weak link of the team. Charlotte tells Bayley to come to the ring so she can address her. Bayley comes out to the ring and gives Charlotte props for her match at Hell In A Cell. Charlotte says Bayley has to face another member from Team RAW before Survivor Series. Bayley says she’s tired of listening to Charlotte talk, and asks if she’ll be facing. Charlotte says instead, Bayley will be facing Nia Jax.

Nia Jax def. Bayley: Charlotte and Dana Brooke are on commentary for this one. Nia dominates the opening minutes of the match until Bayley locks Nia in a guillotine choke. Nia fights out, and Bayley starts working on Nia with kicks and elbows. Bayley hits a running bulldog and goes to follow up with a splash, but Nia runs out of the corner and drops Bayley with a clothesline. Nia goes up to the middle rope for a splash, but Bayley gets up and goes for a superplex. Nia blocks it and throws Bayley to the outside and Bayley starts selling a knee injury. Back in the ring, Nia hits a Samoan Drop for the win.

Cesaro & Sheamus def. The Shining Stars: Primo starts off with a quick rollup on Cesaro for a one count. Cesaro comes back and goes for The Swing, but Primo grabs the ropes to block it. Primo and Epic take turns working on Cesaro until Sheamus gets the hot tag and cleans house. Primo tries to interfere, but Cesaro makes the save. Sheamus locks the cloverleaf on Epico for the win via submission.

– We see some footage of Goldust and R-Truth going to a haunted house earlier in the night.

– Jericho and Owens talk in the back about how great it would be if Jericho won the U.S. Title tonight so they could bring it back to Canada. Jericho tells Owens that he needs him tonight, and Owens says after the way Jericho had his back last night it’s the least he could do.

Roman Reigns (c) def. Chris Jericho via DQ: Roman Reigns’ U.S. Championship is on the line in this one, and Kevin Owens is at ringside. Reigns overpowers Jericho in the opening minutes, but Jericho is able to take control after a thumb to the eye. The Champion and challenger trade slaps to the face until Jericho hits a dropkick on Reigns. Jericho goes up top, but Reigns meets him there. Jericho fights off Reigns and follows up with a cross body splash off the top. Reigns comes back with some right hands then clotheslines Jericho to the outside. Reigns throws Jericho into the fan barricade a couple times before rolling him back in the ring. While the referee’s back is turned Owens hits Reigns from behind and sends him flying into the ring post. Back in the ring Jericho takes control of the match and hits a back suplex for a two count. Reigns comes back with a series of clotheslines and a big boot for a two count of his own. Reigns hits a Samoan Drop for another near-fall, then goes for a Superman punch but misses. Jericho drops Reigns with a right hand then goes for a Lionsault, but Reigns gets his knees up to block it. Reigns goes for another Superman punch, and once again Jericho dodges it. Jericho goes for a Codebreaker but Reigns blocks it. Jericho gets Reigns in the Walls of Jericho, but Reigns fights out and hits a series of right hands on Y2J. Reigns hits a sitout powerbomb on Jericho for two. Reigns goes for a Superman punch but Owens gets on the apron and distracts him. Jericho rolls up Reigns from behind for a two count. Jericho goes for his patented springboard dropkick, but Reigns hits him with a Superman punch in mid-air. Reigns follows up with a spear and pins, but Owens runs in before the referee can count to three and starts beating on Reigns. Jericho and Owens beat down Reigns as the crowd chants for Seth Rollins. Owens throws Reigns off the ropes and launches him into the air, and Jericho catches Reigns with a Codebreaker. Rollins runs in for the save and lays out Owens and Jericho. Rollins hits two suicide dives on Owens, then runs back onto the ring apron for a springboard knee to the face of Jericho. Rollins follows up with a superkick and goes for the Pedigree, but Owens pulls Jericho out of the ring. Owens and Jericho walk to the back, and Rollins and Reigns come face to face in the ring. Rollins and Reigns stare each other down in the ring as RAW goes off the air.

How and Why TNA Won Judge’s Ruling Over Billy Corgan and Sidestepped An Injunction

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1NHaThfSi3k

Our friend Ryan Satin of Pro Wrestling Sheet has posted the entire opinion entered today by Chancellor Ellen Hobbes Lyle in Billy Corgan’s lawsuit against TNA, its parent companies, and its managers, including Dixie Carter. As noted earlier, this opinion dissolved Corgan’s temporary restraining order against TNA (which kept the company from selling off shares and assets, signing contracts, etc.) and denied his request for an injunction. So, according to the honorable Chancellor Lyle, why did TNA prevail?

According to the pledge agreement that Corgan and Carter signed on August 11th, Corgan would get power of attorney for Carter’s 92.5% of TNA if an “event of default” took place. According to Corgan, those “events of default” were not TNA’s non-repayment of the loan (it’s due tomorrow, November 1st), but actually these two issues:

  1. [T]he LLC has become insolvent.
  2. [T]he Defendants have breached by not performing their duty of keeping the Plaintiff informed about the financial condition of the LLC, and potential acquisition of the LLC and/or some of its assets.

Chancellor Lyle ruled that the agreement “was not implemented in accordance with Tennessee law and [TNA’s] LLC Operating Agreement,” and as a result, Section 6, the relevant portion, “is, therefore, unenforceable to remove the Defendant LLC Managers.” The managers are Carter, her husband, Serg Salinas, and Chief Financial Officer Dean Broadhead, and they all had to consent for the agreement with Corgan to be valid. Obviously, he was lacking that consent. The court also found that Corgan’s underlying argument, that under the agreement, he was getting a proxy to Carter’s shares and not the actual shares, lacked merit.

Specifically, on the individual issues, even if it was a valid agreement:

Re: #1:

“[T]he operative text of the Pledge Agreement, ‘becomes insolvent,’ is ambiguous when applied to the facts of record.” The relevant rules of procedure require “clear proof for issuance of an injunction” and “[t]he existence of an ambiguity does not constitute clear proof.” In addition, “[a]s identified by Defendants’ argument, inclusion of the word ‘becomes’ in the text must be taken into account. Tennessee contract construction rules require every word to be given effect, and none may be ignored, omitted or read out of the text.”

In other words? TNA couldn’t become insolvent if TNA already was insolvent. From Hobbes’ ruling:

It is undisputed that at the time the parties entered into the insolvency provision of the default section of the Pledge Agreement, the LLC was financially distressed. While the inference the Defendants seek for the Court to draw is that this distress was an anticipated temporary cash crunch from moving a license fee operation of the LLC to a barter system to maximize monetarization of the LLC’s content, the facts nevertheless are unrefuted that in 3months—June, July, August 2016—the LLC had to have huge infusions of cash from the Plaintiff to meet expenses and to produce its product or, as stated by Defendant Broadhead, “all would have been lost.”

The Court further finds that much of the Plaintiffs proof of insolvency, as would be expected, is not financial events and “snapshots” which occurred after the Pledge Agreement was entered into on August 11, 2016, but were conditions and events which had their inception and roots before August 11, 2016, which continued to worsen and deteriorate up to the present.

Due to the time constraints of working for the injunction, what Corgan was able to find amounting to proof of TNA becoming insolvent after August 11th was “that debts have increased 52% in the last 60 days ” and the following “collection and enforcement demands” from creditors (new or at least partially new information is in bold):

  • As of August 19, 2016, Impact Ventures was unable to pay American Express, prompting American Express to file suit to recover.
  • As of August 31, 2016, Impact Ventures was unable to pay officers’ salaries.
  • As of September 1, 2016, checks issued to talent bounced, and Dean Broadhead stated: “We owe talent money. We owe employees money, we [sic] many vendors money.
  • As of September 8, 2016, the Tennessee Department of Revenue filed a tax lien against the company.
  • As of September 8, 2016, Impact Venture’s operating account was overdrawn and the company had trade accounts payable.

Re: #2:

“The parties have submitted competing and disputed versions of these facts such that the proof is not clear” as to whether or not TNA withheld or concealed information from Corgan. Corgan needed to prove a “substantial likelihood of success on the merits at trial that the Defendants breached by withholding information.” At this early juncture, with conflicting information from both sides, Hobbes didn’t think his case rose to that level.

Billy Corgan Tweets Statement On Judge’s Ruling In TNA Lawsuit

Billy Corgan tweeted these messages after word came out that he lost both his temporary restraining order against TNA and his request for a temporary injunction against the company:

https://twitter.com/Billy/status/793183441491668992

https://twitter.com/Billy/status/793184289584066560

https://twitter.com/Billy/status/793185545216069632

If you’re having issues with the embeds, here’s the statement in its entirety:

For those asking, I’m in no way disappointed in the judges ruling regarding TNA. Rather, I’m grateful the judge considered the case. It’s important to note is these proceedings have brought forth facts which illuminate business practices I have fought against for a reason. And I suggest that a careful reading on the judge’s ruling supports there can be no claim of victory by anyone in a position of authority.

Update: And here is our post summarizing what you need to know about why the judge/chancellor ruled the way she did.

Major Legal Victory For TNA As Judge Rules Against Billy Corgan

The online docket of Chancery Court in Nashville/Davidson County, Tennessee has been updated in Billy Corgan’s lawsuit against TNA, its parent companies, and its corporate managers (including Dixie Carter and her husband). It reads as follows:

10/31/2016 Chancellor’s Memorandum and Order

Memorandum and Order Dissolving 10/13/16 Temporary Restraining Order and Denying Temporary Injunction

This means that TNA is now free to sell pieces of the company again, sign new contracts, and so on. If Corgan still wants relief for what he believes is his rights to power of attorney for Dixie Carter’s 92.5% of the company, then he’s not getting it in court until he pushes the lawsuit to a settlement or a jury award. As outlined in court, TNA is expected to be sold to Anthem Sports and Entertainment, the parent company of The Fight Network, with Jason Brown of Aroluxe Media (minority shareholder) taking over as Chief Executive Officer.

Presumably, Aroluxe will continue to produce the TV even with Anthem being the majority owner. Carter, who is believed to retain a small percentage in the proposed deal and has always looked to save face in these deals, will have a title and some kind of “owner emeritus” status.

Update: Billy Corgan’s statement on the ruling can be read here.

Goldberg Says He Hugged Vince After RAW Return, What’s Next After Lesnar Match

Bill Goldberg recently appeared on Booker T’s Heated Conversations podcast to discuss his upcoming match against Brock Lesnar at Survivor Series. Goldberg expressed that returning to the ring is a huge risk for him, but at least it “shouldn’t be too difficult” to live up to the standard of his last match with Lesnar, which was nearly universally criticized by fans.

“There’s a lot to take into consideration, dude,” Goldberg told Booker T. “Am I going to be able to do it physically? Am I going to be big enough? Am I going to be strong enough? Am I going to break something, pull something, tear something? Am I going to be able to do the things that I used to do? I mean, the list is a million things long. But, hey, dude, I don’t have a problem with obstacles.”

Goldberg returned to WWE earlier this month for the first time in twelve years. He says that despite his differences with Vince McMahon in the past, he gave the WWE Chairman a big hug when he returned backstage after delivering his comeback promo on the October 17th edition of RAW.

“I’ve had some issues with them. Everybody has,” Goldberg said. “But, I can tell you, once I went through ‘Gorilla’ [position] after I delivered a promo that I didn’t think I had the ability to do, with the help of a lot of people, I gave him an embrace I never thought I’d be giving and it was one of appreciation that he gave me the opportunity to be that guy again.”

He noted that WWE only offered him a one-match deal and he’s treating it like the last match of his career. Goldberg says that after Survivor Series he’ll be thinking about “what’s next” for him.

“The minute after the match is over, I won’t bask in it,” he told Booker T. “I’ll think about what’s next. If it’s anything else in the wrestling world, I’ll consider that. If not, hey, man, it’s not like I’ve looking for something to do the last 12 years by any means.”

Backstage News On Charlotte Winning At HIAC, Her Next Feud

At Sunday’s WWE Hell In A Cell, Charlotte was victorious over Sasha Banks to win back the Women’s Championship in Banks’ hometown of Boston, MA. It was only decided late last week that Charlotte and Banks would be the main event, and that wasn’t the only last-minute change relating to the Women’s Title match.

Dave Meltzer reported on Wrestling Observer Radio on Monday that the original plans for last night’s Women’s Title match called for Sasha to win over Charlotte. Much like the original plans for SummerSlam earlier this year, that finish changed and Charlotte went over Banks instead.

Meltzer noted that Vince McMahon made the call to change the finish. The WWE Chairman reportedly wants to move into a Charlotte vs. Bayley feud sooner than the creative team originally planned for.

WWE Hell In A Cell 2016 Reaction

Kickoff Show:

Cedric Alexander, Sin Cara & Lince Dorado defeated Ariya Daivari, Tony Nese & Drew Gulak

Brian Kendrick and TJ Perkins had another conversation backstage. Kendrick once again asked Perkins to let him win. Perkins told Kendrick to go out there and win it the right way. Rich Swann was on the kickoff panel following this segment. Swann stated that Kendrick asking the Cruiserweight Champion to throw a match was disrespectful to the division.

Main Card:

United States Championship Match: Roman Reigns (c) vs Rusev

The crowd wasn’t into this match right from the beginning. There were chants of “we want Lana!” during the beginning of the match. Reigns started off the match in control and sent Rusev flying into the cell off of the ring apron. Roman then threw Rusev into the cage again and connected with a massive right hand. Reigns continued the assault and sent Rusev shoulder first into the steel steps.

Rusev finally captured control of the match and sent Reigns into the LED ring post. Rusev was bleeding from his arm due to flying into the cell in the beginning of the match. The action spilled back into the ring and Reigns hit Rusev with a boot to the face.

Reigns was gearing up for the Superman Punch but Rusev rolled out of the ring. Reigns went for the Drive-By but Rusev countered and hit a Clothesline. Rusev then threw Reigns into the steps outside the ring. Rusev then picked up the steps and hit Reigns with them a couple of times. Rusev set up the steps on the top turnbuckle.

The crowd was chanting for tables throughout the match. Reigns beat the hell out of Rusev with a kendo stick outside the ring. Rusev recaptured momentum in the match by hanging Reigns between the ropes and then trapping him there. Reigns couldn’t defend himself and Rusev hit him with the kendo stick over and over. It didn’t seem to matter though, as Reigns immediately escaped from the ropes and connected with a Clothesline.

Reigns connected with a Superman Punch but Rusev kicked out at two. Roman went for a Spear but Rusev countered with a kick to the face and slammed Reigns’ head into the steps set up on the turnbuckle. Rusev then went for a pin but Reigns kicked out. Rusev then locked in the Accolade in the center of the ring. Reigns was able to get out of the hold but Rusev once again kicked him in the head.

Rusev then brought a chain into the ring and hit Reigns several times with it. Rusev continued to control the match and sent Reigns into the steel steps in the ring. Rusev then propped Reigns on top of the steps and applied the Accolade once again while using the chain. Reigns once again powered through and hit a Samoan Drop on Rusev on top of the steps. Reigns then hit a Spear on Rusev off of the steps for the victory.

Winner & Still United States Champion: Roman Reigns

Reaction: This was a good match. It started off very slow and the crowd wasn’t into the match at all. Eventually, the action picked up and it wound up being entertaining. I hope this is the end of this feud because it is very tired. It was pretty obvious that Reigns was going to win this match and I think that was the main reason the crowd in Boston wasn’t into it. I also hope that the WWE has plans for Rusev in the near future. If this feud is now mercifully over, I don’t really know what they can do with Rusev. He seems to be stuck in the middle of the card forever. Yet another loss to Roman Reigns certainly wont change that.

Dana Brooke vs Bayley

Dana Brooke controlled the beginning of the match. She targeted the injured shoulder of Bayley. Finally, Bayley fought back and was able to put together some offense. Bayley was favoring her shoulder the entire time. Bayley hit the Bayley to Belly out of nowhere and picked up the victory.

Winner: Bayley

Enzo & Cass vs Gallows & Anderson

Enzo and Anderson started out the match. Enzo got the upper hand and tagged in Cass. Big Cass connected with several punches on Anderson in the corner. Cass then launched Enzo onto both Gallows and Anderson. Eventually, Gallows and Anderson took control of the match and isolated Enzo.

Enzo was finally able to fight off Anderson and hit a DDT. Enzo tagged in Cass and Anderson tagged in Gallows. Cass connected with a boot to the face of Gallows. Cass then hit the Empire Elbow on Gallows. Enzo tagged himself in and hit a Crossbody on Anderson. Gallows then hit Enzo with a massive kick. Gallows and Anderson hit the Magic Killer on Enzo for the victory.

Winners: Gallows & Anderson

Reaction: The TD Garden was completely silent for this match. Enzo and Cass cut a decent promo before the match but it went on way too long for a PPV. Both of the tag teams in this match needed this win. In the end, Gallows and Anderson were the ones who got it. It would be nice to see the WWE actually do something good with Gallows and Anderson but that probably wont happen. As for Enzo and Cass, I guess they will just continue to cut entertaining promos and then lose every match of significance.

Universal Championship Match: Kevin Owens (c) vs Seth Rollins

Rollins had tape on his back to sell the injury he sustained by Kevin Owens Powerbombing him onto the ring apron on Raw. The match started off with Rollins in control. He sent Owens into the cage a couple of times. Rollins set up a table outside the ring. Owens began to target the bad back of Seth Rollins and captured momentum in the match.

Owens controlled the next several minutes of the match and targeted the back of Rollins the entire time. Owens hit a Cannonball on Rollins while he was up against the cage.

Rollins and Owens then had a brilliant sequence where they traded kicks to the head and it culminated in Owens laying out Rollins with a massive Clothesline. Owens then set up another table from the ring apron to the cell over the table previously set up by Rollins. Seth fought off Owens and landed a Suplex onto the ring apron. Owens grabbed a fire extinguisher from under the ring and hit Rollins in the ribs with it. Owens then accidentally sprayed the referee with the extinguisher.

The referee had to leave the cell and that left the door open for Chris Jericho to come down to the cell. Jericho then locked himself in with Owens and Rollins. Jericho fell victim to the Pedigree and Rollins Powerbombed Owens through both tables. Rollins struggled with lifting Owens but he eventually got it done.

Rollins rolled Owens back into the ring and climbed to the top turnbuckle. Rollins connected with a Frog Splash but Jericho dragged the referee out of the ring. Rollins then Powerbombed Jericho off of the cell wall. When Rollins got back into the ring, Owens hit a Pop-up Powerbomb but Seth was able to kick out at two.

Owens and Jericho then teamed up on Rollins. Owens hit Rollins with several chair shots to the injured back. Rollins fought back and hit both Jericho and Owens with a chair. Owens then hit a massive DDT on Rollins on top of a chair. Owens then set up both chairs in the middle of the ring and Powerbombed Rollins through both of them for the victory. After the match, Jericho hit Rollins with a Codebreaker.

Winner & Still Universal Champion: Kevin Owens

Reaction: The crowd was into this match the entire time. This match was very good. There was no interference by Triple H so that storyline is still sitting out there. The friendship between Owens and Jericho continues but I’m guessing that won’t last for much longer.

Cruiserweight Championship Match: TJ Perkins (c) vs Brian Kendrick

The match started out back and forth. Kendrick was frustrated with Perkins because he was kicking out of pins. Apparently Kendrick actually thought Perkins was just going to allow him to win. Perkins took control of the match and launched himself onto Kendrick outside the ring. The action spilled back into the ring and Kendrick connected with a Dropkick. Perkins battled back and landed a Detonation Kick and a Wrecking Ball Dropkick. Kendrick locked in the Captain’s Hook in the middle of the ring. Perkins countered the hold into a roll-up and Kendrick kicked out at two.

Perkins locked in the Knee Bar but Kendrick reached the ropes. Kendrick pretended to be injured and sucked in TJ Perkins. Kendrick then headbutted Perkins and locked in the Captain’s Hook for the submission victory.

Winner & New Cruiserweight Champion: Brian Kendrick

Reaction: This was a decent match. It told a good story and Kendrick was able to trick his old friend into believing he was actually hurt. I find it difficult to overlook the fact that nobody in the crowd cared at all. Everybody was silent for the entire match. Kendrick has been trying to get the crowd to hate him for awhile now and it doesn’t appear to be working. Instead, neither Superstar was able to generate a reaction from the Boston crowd tonight. Sure, they were put in a tough spot by having to follow the Owens and Rollins match. I also think the reaction highlights how poor the Cruiserweight division has been showcased on Raw since it arrived.

Raw Tag Team Championship Match: New Day (c) vs Sheamus & Cesaro

It was Xavier Woods and Big E wrestling for the New Day. Kofi Kingston was ringside for the match. Cesaro and Sheamus dominated Woods early. Big E finally got into the match and hit a couple of Belly to Belly Suplexes on Sheamus. Xavier Woods flipped onto Cesaro outside the ring. In the ring, Sheamus went for the Brogue Kick but Big E caught him and slammed him to the mat.

Xavier Woods was then tagged in and immediately was greeted by a White Noise from Sheamus. Woods battled back as Cesaro was tagged in and connected with an Elbow from the top rope. Cesaro then locked in the Cesaro Swing and turned it into the Sharpshooter. Big E ran into the ring and broke up the hold. Sheamus went to hit the Brogue Kick on Big E but he accidentally hit Cesaro.

Sheamus launched himself from the top rope onto all three members of the New Day outside the ring. Cesaro locked in the Sharpshooter on Woods in the middle of the ring. Big E was trying to get into the ring but Sheamus prevented him. Kofi Kingston hit the Trouble in Paradise on Sheamus outside the ring and the referee disqualified the New Day. Even though they lost, the New Day remain Tag Team Champions.

Winners: Cesaro & Sheamus

Reaction: I thought this was an okay match and the ending made sense. The New Day will certainly be losing the titles soon. The WWE may just be keeping the belts on them till they break Demolition’s record or they don’t want to rush Cesaro and Sheamus. I think that Cesaro and Sheamus will become the champs in the near future but there was no real reason to do it tonight.

Raw Women’s Championship Match: Sasha Banks (c) vs Charlotte

The Boston crowd chanted “we want Sasha!” before the match. Charlotte attacked Sasha Banks before the match. Sasha launched Charlotte into the crowd. The cell came down while both Superstars were outside of it. Charlotte and Sasha climbed halfway up the cell and traded punches. Charlotte was knocked down but pried Sasha off the cell and Powerbombed her through the announce table. At this point, the match still had not officially started.

The referees tried to escort Sasha Banks backstage but she refused. They tried to stretcher Sasha Banks to the back but she finally got back into the ring after about 7 minutes of nothing. Sasha Banks all of the sudden was completely healthy and got back into the cell and attacked Charlotte. Her momentum didn’t last long because Charlotte launched Sasha into the cell.

Sasha locked in the Bank Statement but Charlotte got out of the hold. Banks slammed Charlotte’s head into a chair in the ring several times. Charlotte countered by delivering slamming Sasha’s back onto the chair. Charlotte launched Sasha Banks into the cell but Sasha caught herself and hit a Double Knees off of the cell. Sasha followed it up by hitting the Double Knees a few more times.

Banks hit the Frog Splash but Charlotte kicked out at two. Sasha then hit the Double Knees on Charlotte as she was hung up in the second rope and onto a chair. Once again, Charlotte kicked out at two. Banks tried to bring a table into the ring but Charlotte caught her and drove the table into her neck all the way back to the cell wall.

The action returned to the ring and Charlotte locked in the Figure Four. Sasha battled out of the hold by hitting Charlotte with a steel chair a couple of times. Charlotte and Sasha both hit each other with a punch at the same time and they both fell to the mat. Banks went for the Bank Statement but Charlotte countered into three Backbreakers in a row. Charlotte then propped Sasha up on the table and smacked her in the face.

Charlotte climbed to the top turnbuckle but Sasha got up. Banks hit Charlotte with several punches and repositioned the table across the ring. Sasha tried to Powerbomb Charlotte through the table but her back gave out. Charlotte then tossed Sasha Banks on the table twice and hit the Natural Selection for the victory.

Winner & New Women’s Champion: Charlotte

Reaction: The first ten minutes of this match were brutal. Sasha Banks was supposedly going to be stretchered out of the arena, even though everyone knew that wasn’t the case. Finally, the match actually started and it took a few minutes to regain momentum with the crowd. What followed was a very good match.

There were a bunch of excellent spots in this match. I’m very surprised that Charlotte won the title back so quickly. Sasha Banks really still hasn’t gotten a title run. I don’t really understand why the WWE felt it necessary to take the belt off her right now. Having said that, this match lived up the hype and the main event billing.

Overall, Hell in a Cell was an okay show at best. The Universal Championship and Women’s Championship matches were good. Everything else was very mediocre. I’m hoping that tonight marked the end to a lot of these feuds. I would hate to turn on Monday Night Raw tomorrow night and see Reigns and Rusev fighting again. I’d also like to see Charlotte and Sasha Banks start feuds with other women on the roster.

Randy Orton Celebrates With The Wyatt Family At WWE Live Event (Photos)

Fast forward to last night’s SmackDown house show in Allentown, PA – Bray Wyatt distracted Kane during a Kane vs. Orton Street Fight, allowing Orton to hit the RKO for the win.
