Update On WWE Considering Indy Wrestling On The WWE Network

Following up on the story that WWE was moving forward with efforts to add content from various top independent promotions to the WWE Network, Vince McMahon has reportedly changed his mind and is no longer bullish on the idea.

After strong start by competing streaming service FloSlam and an insatiable need to build the WWE Network subscriber count, live events from hot indies seems like a viable option. The Wrestling Observer reports that some behind-the-scenes talks are ongoing with the hope that Vince could change his mind again at some point.

WWE recently ran Fan Council surveys mentioning various independent groups and the results indicated  strong interest. However, there was also a feeling that the interest wasn’t strong enough to warrant the additional costs. As noted earlier this week, WWE is considering taking NXT television live each week, but the same cost/benefit considerations will be employed before any decisions are made.

Three WWE Injuries Revealed

The Wrestling Observer reports that three WWE talents are currently suffering from injuries – NXT’s Sawyer Fulton & SmackDown’s Naomi and Jey Uso.

Regarding Fulton, he’s expected to be out of action for several months with some sort of shoulder or biceps injury. His absence is the reason for Big Damo joining Sanity, which began on this week’s NXT episode. Fulton last wrestled on 11/17 at the NXT house show in Boston, teaming with Eric Young and Alexander Wolfe for a loss to No Way Jose and TM-61.

Naomi and Jey are both suffering with ankle injuries. Naomi is expected back this week but The Observer did not provide further details on Jey. They both last wrestled on 11/22 – Naomi a loss to Alexa Bliss on Main Event and The Usos a Tag Team Turmoil loss to American Alpha on SmackDown.

As seen in the Instagram videos below, Jey needed a wheelchair to get through the airport the next day:

– Based on what happened during tonight’s NXT episode, it appears Big Damo will be joining Sanity and Sawyer Fulton has been removed from the group. Damo has already been working house shows with Sanity members Eric Young, Alexander Wolfe and Nikki Cross. Below is video from tonight’s show, which saw Damo attack No Way Jose during a tag match against Sanity:

Freebird Rule Announced For The Wyatt Family On SmackDown

WWE has confirmed that SmackDown Tag Team Champions The Wyatt Family will be defending the belts under the Freebird Rule. They announced the following today:

The Wyatt Family to defend SmackDown Tag Team Titles under the Freebird Rule

The Wyatt Family is evoking a rarely-used custom during their reign as SmackDown Tag Team Champions, WWE.com has learned.

While Bray Wyatt & Randy Orton captured the titles for the Family at WWE TLC: Tables, Ladders and Chairs, SmackDown LIVE Commissioner Shane McMahon and General Manager Daniel Bryan have sanctioned Luke Harper as champion as well, making him eligible to defend the titles alongside Wyatt or Orton under the Freebird Rule.

Named for WWE Hall of Famers The Fabulous Freebirds, the rule stipulates that a faction that holds a championship can assign any of its members to defend the title at any given time. The reigning Raw Tag Team Champions, The New Day, have used the Freebird Rule to great success. Xavier Woods has defended the titles several times alongside either Kofi Kingston or Big E, who won them at SummerSlam 2015.

The Wyatts’ challengers might have rested easier knowing they wouldn’t have to contend with the enigmatic Harper on top of Wyatt himself and The Viper. No more.

WWE SmackDown Viewership For Post-TLC Episode

Last night’s WWE SmackDown drew 2.479 million viewers, down from last week’s 2.505 for the final episode before TLC.

This week’s show featured the fallout from TLC and Dean Ambrose vs. The Miz for the WWE Intercontinental Championship in the main event.

SmackDown was #8 in viewership and #2 in the 18-49 demographic for cable last night.

By comparison, Monday’s RAW drew 2.976 million viewers.

Linda McMahon to Head Small Business Administration Under Trump Presidency

We’ve known there was a good chance of this happening for about a week, but it’s now official: WWE co-owner and former CEO Linda McMahon is being appointed the head of the Small Business Administration (SBA) under Donald Trump’s presidential administration. The news broke late Wednesday afternoon in tweets from various mainstream news organizations, with Reuters citing Trump’s transition team, McMahon also tweeted her own announcement a few minutes later:

McMahon has no experience holding public office, and her previous political experience consists of two failed United States Senate campaigns in 2010 and 2012 that cost a combined $100 million of the McMahon family fortune. As for the SBA, it exists to provide support for, well, small businesses in the form of loans among other things, and is also the agency used to provide disaster loans to those who don’t qualify for FEMA grants after natural disasters.

Updated 4:45 p.m. ET: Here’s Trump’s official statement (h/t CNN):

Linda has a tremendous background and is widely recognized as one of the country’s top female executives advising businesses around the globe. She helped grow WWE from a modest 13-person operation to a publicly traded global enterprise with more than 800 employees in offices worldwide.

This is a breaking news story. We will keep you updated as it develops.

Jim Ross Blog: HBK & Undertaker At The Royal Rumble, Sasha & Charlotte “Iron Man” Match

WWE Hall of Famer Jim Ross has updated his blog, which you can read in its entirety over at JRsBarBQ.com. In this installment, JR spoke about Monday’s RAW, recent shakeups with WWE’s broadcast teams, the Royal Rumble and more.

One of the top stories of the week is the announcement that Charlotte & Sasha Banks will participate in WWE’s (main roster) first-ever 30-minute Women’s “Iron Man” match at Roadblock later this month. JR believes both women will have to step up in order for the match to be a success, but WWE is to be commended for their handling of women’s wrestling.

“The 30 minute Ironman, (why not Ironwomen BTW?) match will be a challenge to Sasha and Charlotte as it will require a logical pace, timely selling, a on going, under lying thread to their match I.E. someone has a dinged body part and it is exploited,” Ross said. “I applaud WWE and the two ladies for this booking and wish them the best of luck in telling a great story while continuing to advance their gender’s place within the ‘man’s world’ of pro wrestling.”

The 2017 Royal Rumble is shaping up to be one of the biggest ever with Brock Lesnar and Goldberg already confirmed as two of the 30 entrants. JR thinks WWE should utilize Shawn Michaels and The Undertaker at the Rumble to ensure the Alamo Dome show is a success.

“I like that both Lesnar and Goldberg are both in the Royal Rumble match as it should help move tickets locally for the Alamo Dome extravaganza. I’d love to see an official announcement that both HBK and Taker are going to be on hand in some role as to add to the marketable nostalgia for the event. The two legends do not need to wrestle but being creatively utilized in some manageable manner would help the event feel bigger and more desirable to attend.”

Speaking of the Royal Rumble, JR will be hosting a “RINGSIDE with Jim Ross” show the day of the Royal Rumble (2:30pm local time) at the Improv at River Center in San Antonio. If you’re in town for the Rumble, head over to Rivercitycomedyclub.com for ticket information.

– Baron Corbin will be Jonathan Coachman’s guest tonight ESPN SportsCenter’s weekly Off The Top Rope segment.

  • NXT Champion Samoa Joe vs. Shinsuke Nakamura from Japan

  • Heavy Machinery vs. Enhancement talents

Jerry Lawler & Lita Pulled From WWE Panels, Lita Gone From WWE?

WWE officials have confirmed that Jerry Lawler and Lita have been removed their regular WWE programming duties. They will no longer be part of the RAW, SmackDown and PPV WWE Network panels.

Update: According to WWE Hall of Famer Jim Ross, Lita is no longer affiliated with WWE:

Booker T and Charly Caruso took over the hosting duties for the new RAW pre-show on Monday night. Booker T and Renee Young hosted the SmackDown pre-show, but it’s worth noting that the Youtube video description for the SmackDown pre-show lists Booker T and Charly Caruso as the hosts. The RAW and SmackDown pre-shows were both cut back from 30 minutes to 10.

F4Wonline.com adds that Lawler is “loosely affiliated” with WWE and may be brought back to the WWE Network for special events like WrestleMania weekend, etc.

Rhyno Walks Out On Heath Slater During Talking Smack

Last night on Talking Smack, Rhyno walked out on Heath Slater. Rhyno blamed the loss on Smackdown to Bray Wyatt and Randy Orton on Slater. Rhyno stated that he was the only one competing in the match and Slater let him down. Slater and Rhyno lost the Tag Team Championships to Randy Orton and Bray Wyatt at WWE TLC on Sunday. Heath Slater responded to Rhyno’s accusations that Slater was holding them back by pointing at that Rhyno was the one who got pinned on Sunday. Rhyno didn’t seem to take that well and stormed off the set.

It appears that this is the beginning of the end for the tag team of Heath Slater and Rhyno. It was an unexpected run, given the fact that Heath Slater wasn’t drafted to either Monday Night Raw or Smackdown during the brand split. The two going their separate ways makes sense given the fact that they lost the titles and all of their momentum with the WWE Universe. It will be interesting to see where things go from here, especially for Heath Slater. Heath has become a bit of a crowd favorite and he earned the crowd’s praise by constantly battling for a roster spot when he wasn’t drafted. As for Rhyno, I’m not sure what the future holds for him. I don’t believe the initial plans were for Rhyno and Slater to form a tag team in the first place. It was lightning in a bottle and the team was destined to be short-lived.

WWE Smackdown & 205 Live Reaction (12/6)

Smackdown (12/6)

This week’s episode of Smackdown kicked off with AJ Styles coming down to the ring with a walking boot on. Styles showed a picture on the jumbotron of the hole in his pants that happened at TLC. Styles then mocked the crowd and bragged about defeating Dean Ambrose at TLC. Styles also revealed that he will be stuck in a walking boot for a week and that he is not medically cleared to defend his WWE World Championship tonight against James Ellsworth.

James Ellsworth interrupted and angrily stormed down to the ring. Ellsworth mocked AJ’s walking boot and insinuated that Styles was wearing the boot in order to get out of the title match tonight. Ellsworth went on to state that he has AJ’s number and accused Styles of ducking him. Styles stated that every victory Ellsworth has on Smackdown was because of Dean Ambrose.

Dean Ambrose interrupted and joined Styles and Ellsworth in the ring. Ellsworth reached out his hand to Dean Ambrose and Dean hit the Dirty Deeds. As AJ Styles cackled from outside the ring, Ambrose walked backstage and left Ellsworth knocked out in the ring.

Reaction: It is looking like this is going to a long night for James Ellsworth. When Styles was in TNA, his promos were not nearly as polished as they are now. It is amazing how a year ago I would have considered it a long shot that he would ever make it to the WWE. Now, in my opinion he is the best thing going in the WWE and almost every match he has is the best of the night. Even when Styles got to the WWE, I thought he would be underutilized. It is awesome to see a guy that talented finally get his shot on in the WWE and absolutely knock it out of the park.

Smackdown Tag Team Championship Match: Randy Orton & Bray Wyatt (c) vs Heath Slater & Rhyno

Slater and Rhyno invoked their rematch clause just two days after dropping the titles at TLC. Orton and Slater started off the match. Slater got in some offense but Orton put a stop to it pretty quick. Bray Wyatt then entered the match and fell victim to a Crossbody off of the second turnbuckle. Rhyno was tagged in and he connected with a Belly to Belly Suplex on Wyatt. Rhyno went for the Gore but Wyatt rolled out of the ring and Smackdown went to a commercial break.

When Smackdown returned, Bray Wyatt was in control of Rhyno. Wyatt hit a Senton on Rhyno and went for the cover but Rhyno kicked out at two. Orton was then tagged in and he continued the assault on Rhyno. Orton landed a Dropkick on Rhyno but Rhyno fought back and was able to tag in Slater. Heath connected with a running knee and followed it up with a Neckbreaker. Orton got back up and leveled Slater with a Powerslam.

Orton went for a pinfall but Rhyno broke it up. Wyatt was tagged in and was greeted with a big right hand from Slater. Wyatt responded with a right hand of his own and Slater fell to the mat. Wyatt had Slater in position for the Sister Abigail but tagged in Randy Orton instead. Orton hit an RKO for the victory.

Winners & Still Tag Team Champions: Randy Orton & Bray Wyatt

Reaction: I really enjoy the new Wyatt family storyline. I don’t know how long it will last. Everyone seems to think that it is only a matter of time before Wyatt and Orton turn on each other. I believe that will be the case eventually, but for now this team is entertaining to watch. Bray Wyatt has been lost in the shuffle for years and has lost an extraordinary amount of matches. That is not the case now as he is currently holding his first title in the WWE and is a part of one of the better storylines in the entire company.

Carmella vs Natalya

Before the match, Carmella once again stated that it was Natalya that attacked Nikki Bella at Survivor Series. Carmella stated that Natalya wishes that she was as glamorous as Nikki Bella. Carmella went on to call Natalya a deceiving con artist. Natalya stormed down the entrance ramp with an enraged look on her face. Natalya attacked Carmella before the referee even called for the bell. Natalya beat Carmella down but Carmella escaped from the ring. Natalya chased Carmella backstage but couldn’t find her. Instead, she stumbled upon Nikki Bella. Natalya pleaded with Nikki to not believe Carmella but Nikki Bella just walked away.

The Ascension vs Hype Bros

Viktor and Konnor took turns beating the hell out Zack Ryder to begin the match. Ryder eventually fought back and hit a Neckbreaker on Konnor. Ryder was able to tag in Rawley and he cleaned house. Ryder was tagged back in and they hit the Hype Ryder for the victory.

Winners: Hype Bros

Miz TV w/ Dean Ambrose

The Miz bragged about his victory over Ziggler at TLC before introducing Dean Ambrose. The Miz and Maryse politely clapped for Ambrose as he walked down to the ring. Ambrose stated that he couldn’t believe that Ellsworth turned his back on him. The Miz basically called Ambrose an idiot for not seeing it coming and stated that he deserved it. The Miz was also upset that Ambrose hit the Dirty Deeds on Ellsworth earlier because he wanted to see Ellsworth versus Ambrose in a match tonight.

The Miz presented Dean Ambrose with the first ever “Miz Participation Award”. It was a framed photo of Miz and Maryse with a blue ribbon on it. The crowd sarcastically chanted “you deserve it!”. Ambrose said he wanted to try and shove the entire participation award down The Miz’s throat. Daniel Bryan interrupted and came down to the entrance ramp. Daniel Bryan announced that the main event will be The Miz versus Dean Ambrose for the Intercontinental Championship. The Miz absolutely lost his mind in the ring as the crowd broke out in a “yes!” chant.

Reaction: The Miz remains hilarious and this segment was great. I’ll take this main event over another Styles and Ellsworth match any day. I’m guessing that Ellsworth will cost Dean the match and get his revenge for the Dirty Deeds he suffered at the hands of Ambrose earlier in the night.

Kalisto vs Baron Corbin

The match started off back and forth. Kalisto got in some offense and these two have terrific chemistry together. Kalisto went for a Tornado DDT but Corbin reversed it into an awesome End of Days for the victory. This match was quick but was very good.

Winner: Baron Corbin

Chad Gable vs Tyler Breeze

Fandango and Jason Jordan were ringside. Fandango tried to attack Gable but he got tangled up in a cord outside the ring. Breeze connected with a Belly to Back Suplex on Gable. Outside the ring, Jordan hit Fandango with a Belly to Belly Suplex. Back in the ring, Gable connected with a German Suplex on Breeze for the victory.

Winner: Chad Gable

Alexa Bliss came down to the ring to celebrate her winning the Smackdown Women’s Championship at TLC. Bliss raised the title and a massive pyro went off. The crowd chanted “We want Becky” and she quickly came down to the ring to interrupt the celebration. Becky Lynch called Alexa Bliss selfish and whiny. Alexa stated that Becky can call her whatever she wants, but she now has to call her champion. Becky stated that she wanted her rematch for the title right now. Alexa Bliss then pretended that she was going to fight but instead rolled out of the ring. Alexa Bliss then taunted Becky Lynch and walked backstage.

Intercontinental Championship Match: The Miz (c) vs Dean Ambrose

Ambrose started out the match on the offensive and locked in a Headlock. The Miz broke out of the hold but Dean connected with a Crossbody and several punches to the head of The Miz while he was on the mat. Ambrose knocked Miz out of the ring and went for a Suicide Dive. The Miz dragged Maryse in the way and Dean had no choice but to stop. Ambrose got out of the ring and launched Miz into the barricade. Smackdown went to a commercial break.

When Smackdown returned, The Miz was performing Daniel Bryan’s moves and doing the “yes!” chant. Ambrose battled back and connected with a Running Bulldog on The Miz. The match continued to be back and forth until The Miz connected with a Shinbreaker on Ambrose. Miz went for a second Shinbreaker but Ambrose countered it into a roll-up but Miz kicked out.

The Miz was able to lock in the Figure Four but Ambrose was able to reach the bottom rope to break the hold. Miz charged at Ambrose but Dean ducked and Miz went flying out of the ring. Ambrose was able to connect with the Suicide Dive this time. Back in the ring, Miz connected with a DDT and went for a cover but Ambrose kicked out.

Ambrose fought back and landed a Lunatic Lariat. Dean then climbed to the top turnbuckle but The Miz got up and joined him. Miz went for a Superplex but Ambrose knocked him to the mat. Maryse tripped up Ambrose and he went crotch first into the top turnbuckle. James Ellsworth then joined the party and accidentally  distracted the referee while Ambrose had The Miz in a roll-up. Ambrose became frustrated and started to yell at Ellsworth. The Miz then hit the Skull Crushing Finale on Ambrose for the victory.

Winner & Still Intercontinental Champion: The Miz

Reaction: Tonight’s episode of Smackdown was decent but even a decent episode of Smackdown is much better than Monday Night Raw. The ending to main event was predictable. I knew that Ellsworth would interfere but I thought he would purposefully cost Ambrose the match. The way it played out was that Ellsworth didn’t mean to cost Ambrose the match and was trying to point out the interference by Maryse. I’m guessing that the storyline between Ellsworth and Ambrose will continue for a few more weeks.

205 Live (12/6)

Noam Dar vs Cedric Alexander

Alicia Fox and Alexander were shown backstage. Corey Graves stated that he had sources that informed him that Fox and Alexander are officially dating. The match started off back and forth. It was a bit distracting to see all of the people exiting the arena during the match. Alexander connected with a Dropkick to Dar. The match went back and forth for a couple of minutes before Dar took control.

Alexander eventually fought back and hit a Springboard Crossbody on Dar. Alexander’s momentum was short-lived as Dar locked in an Armbar in the center of the ring. Alexander tried to get out of the hold but Dar prevented it by punching the head of Cedric a few times. Alexander was still able to get out of the hold but Dar connected with a running kick and won the match.

After the match, Noam Dar dedicated the win to Cedric Alexander’s girlfriend Alicia Fox.

Winner: Noam Dar

Reaction: This match was decent but the silent crowd really hurt it. The WWE really needs to find a way to get the crowd invested in the Cruiserweight division. When a crowd doesn’t care, the energy is sucked out of the match and it makes it difficult to enjoy.

Ariya Daivari vs Jack Gallagher

Gallagher had tape on his knees due to the attack by Daivari last night on Raw. Daivari immediately went after Gallagher’s knee. Daivari continued to focus on the knee throughout the match and smashed Gallagher’s knee into the ring post. Gallagher’s knee bandage was ripped off by Daivari and Ariya continued to focus all of his attack on the injured knee. Gallagher fought back and went for a couple of roll-ups but Daivari kicked out. Gallagher then connected with an awesome looking headbutt but once again Daivari kicked out of the pinfall. Daivari connected with a Splash off of the top rope for the victory.

Winner: Ariya Daivari

Cruiserweight Championship Match: Rich Swann (c) vs Brian Kendrick

TJ Perkins joined commentary for this match. Perkins and Austin Aries started to argue right away. Aries accused Perkins of being too concerned with maintaining friendships rather than recapturing the Cruiserweight Championship. Kendrick hit Sliced Break on Swann outside the ring. Back in the ring, Kendrick connected with a Suplex and followed it up by applying the Captain’s Hook. Rich Swann was able to crawl to the bottom rope to break the hold.

The crowd started to chant “Austin Aries!” and Aries mocked Perkins on commentary and rubbed it in his face that he was getting chants while not even competing. Swann launched himself onto Kendrick outside the ring and continued the assualt back in the ring. Swann connected with a Tiger Bomb and went for the cover but Kendrick kicked out. Swann went for another Tiger Bomb but Kendrick reversed it into a Hurricanrana. Kendrick followed it up with a Suplex and went for the Captain’s Hook again.

Swann was able to block the hold and both men got back to their feet. Kendrick once again got the upper hand and this time was able to apply the Captain’s Hook. Swann reached for the bottom rope but Kendrick prevented it and brought Swann back to the middle of the ring. Eventually, Swann was able to get to the bottom rope and the hold was broken. Kendrick and Swann then battled on the ring apron. Kendrick launched Swann into the LED ring post. Swann shoved Kendrick into Perkins ringside. Kendrick and Perkins had a stare down as Swann crawled back in the ring. Kendrick finally got back in the ring and was greeted with a kick to the face by Swann. The kick knocked Kendrick out and Swann won the match.

After the match, Kendrick attacked Perkins by the announce table. Rich Swann joined the fight and attacked Kendrick. Perkins went for a Superkick on Kendrick but he missed and accidentally kicked Swann in the face. Kendrick then launched Perkins into the barricade. 205 Live went off the air with Brian Kendrick blowing kisses to the crowd.

Winner & Still Cruiserweight Champion: Rich Swann

https://twitter.com/WWE205Live/status/806346307157659648

Reaction: The main event was a solid match. I enjoyed Aries relentlessly mocking Perkins throughout the match. The Cruiserweight Championship match was the only match that generated any sort of reaction from the crowd during the show. In my opinion, 205 Live is a decent show but it would be much better if the WWE could find a way to get the crowd more invested in the Superstars in the Cruiserweight division. Time will tell if they will be able to do that. I believe that a way to jump-start that process would be to give them some more time on Monday Night Raw every week.

AJ Styles In A Walking Boot On WWE SmackDown (Video)

WWE World Champion AJ Styles’ ankle injury was acknowledged on Tuesday’s SmackDown Live. As noted, Styles was injured during his main event TLC title defense against Dean Ambrose.

Styles came out tonight on SmackDown wearing a walking boot and announced that he is not cleared to compete against his scheduled main event against James Ellsworth. Styles said he has to wear the boot for at least one week.

WWE SmackDown Results & Discussion (12/6)

This week’s episode of WWE SmackDown aired live from the Toyota Center in Houston, Texas.

– AJ Styles comes out to the ring first to open up the show, and he’s wearing a cast on his left foot. AJ cuts a promo about beating Dean Ambrose at TLC, and with that, James Ellsworth comes out to interrupt. Ellsworth accuses AJ of wearing the cast on his foot to get out of his Title defense against him tonight. Ellsworth says he has AJ’s number after beating him three times, and AJ is ducking him now. Ellsworth takes credit for AJ’s victory on Sunday, but AJ says he would have won either way, with or without Ellsworth. Dean Ambrose interrupts next, and he immediately hits a Dirty Deeds on Ellsworth and leaves. AJ laughs at Ellsworth from ringside as Ellsworth lays out cold in the ring.

Bray Wyatt & Randy Orton def. Rhyno & Heath Slater: Wyatt & Orton’s Tag Titles are on the line in this one in a rematch from TLC. After some competitive back-and-forth action to open up, Wyatt takes control of the match against Rhyno. Orton gets the tag and continues the offense, getting a near-fall after a knee to Rhyno’s head. Rhyno hits a shoulder block on Orton and tags in Slater who cleans house. Slater gets a two count on Orton after a superkick, but then Orton comes back with a spinning powerslam. Wyatt tags in and after a brief exchange, he drops Slater with a lariat. Wyatt is about to go for the Sister Abigail, but instead he tags in Orton and hands Slater to Orton for an RKO. Orton covers for the victory, and the Wyatt Family retains the Tag Titles.

– Carmella is out to the ring next to cut a promo on both Nikki Bella and Natalya. She says that now the real Natalya has reared her head and that she’s a con-artist. Their match is up next.

Carmella vs. Natalya – No contest: Natalya starts off with a double leg takedown on Carmella and they start brawling around the mat. Before the bell can ring, Natalya chases Carmella backstage, where Natalya runs into Nikki Bella. Natalya tells Nikki that she can’t believe what Carmella says about Natalya being the one who attacked Nikki at Survivor Series. Nikki walks away.

The Hype Bros def. The Ascension: The Ascension controls the match early on against Ryder, until Mojo gets the hot tag and lays into Konnor with a series of clotheslines and a Stinger Splash in the corner. After another brief back-and-forth between the two teams, The Hype Bros hit the Hype Ryder on Viktor for the win.

WWE Taking NXT Live Each Week?

With the continued success of WWE NXT, there have been preliminary talks about taking the brand’s WWE Network show live on a weekly basis. The news comes courtesy of Dave Meltzer on Wrestling Observer Radio. The move would involve several logistical hurdles, most notably the added cost of talent coordination and shooting another live weekly show. There is also some skepticism regarding how much of an impact the move would have on Network subscribers. WWE currently tapes 3-4 weeks of NXT television from Full Sail University every month or so and there are risks associated with altering this formula.

There’s no doubt that 2016 was a banner year for NXT. In addition to the group holding live events in new markets domestically and internationally, the quarterly Takeover specials have become one of the highlights of WWE’s “big 4” weekends. Tickets go on sale this Friday for the first #NXTRoadTrip of 2017 and the next NXT Takeover event is scheduled for Royal Rumble weekend.

Update On AJ Styles’ Injury & Status For This Weekend

As reported earlier, WWE World Champion AJ Styles suffered a minor injury to his right ankle during the WWE TLC main event against Dean Ambrose on Sunday. Styles did not work Monday’s house show in Tyler, TX and was replaced in the main event.

In an update, Dave Meltzer of Wrestling Observer Radio speculates that the injury happened when Styles hit the springboard 450 through a table on Sunday night.

There’s still no word on if Styles will be able to defend the championship against James Ellsworth on tonight’s live SmackDown but we will keep you updated throughout the day. There’s also no word on Styles’ status for weekend house shows but without Styles or John Cena, the already-slim roster would be taking another hit.
