WWE SmackDown Results & Discussion (1/31)

The first episode of WWE SmackDown since the Royal Rumble aired on January 31st from the American Bank Center in Corpus Christi, TX.

– SmackDown kicks off with AJ Styles, Shane McMahon, and Daniel Bryan backstage watching the highlights from last night’s Royal Rumble. Dean Ambrose walks in and tells AJ they have some unfinished business they should settle tonight. AJ declines, but Shane jumps in and sets up a match between them for later tonight.

– John Cena comes out to the ring to cut a promo. Cena says he was wrong about AJ Styles, and says Styles is an elite performer who brings out the best in him. Cena says he’s the champ again, and whoever wants some can come get some. This brings out Bray Wyatt and Randy Orton. Wyatt says he intends to leave the Elimination Chamber as the WWE Champion. Wyatt and Orton walk down to the ring and surround Cena, then the lights cut off. When the lights come back on, Luke Harper is in the ring and he’s standing beside Cena. When Cena sees Harper is on his side, he gets excited, and Orton and Wyatt retreat. Shane McMahon comes out and makes it officially a tag match, and it’s up next.

Randy Orton & Bray Wyatt def. John Cena & Luke Harper: Harper starts things off and takes control of the match. Harper starts beating down Orton at ringside, but doesn’t touch Bray. Harper back suplexes Orton onto the announce table, then throws him back in the ring. Harper gets in the ring and gets nose to nose with Harper. Harper backs off and tags in Cena. Cena looks confused but enters the ring and starts going back and forth with Wyatt. Orton tags in and takes Cena out to ringside, where he drops him on the announce table. Back in the ring, Orton hits Cena with the draping DDT. Wyatt tags back in and continues working on Cena. Cena rolls away from a Senton drop, then Orton tags back in. Cena comes back with a series of shoulder blocks on Orton, then he hits the Five Knuckle Shuffle. Orton escapes an Attitude Adjustment and hits the backstabber on Cena. Harper runs in but so does Wyatt and he stands between Harper and Orton. Harper drops Orton anyways. Wyatt goes to give Harper the Sister Abigail, but Harper gets out and sets Wyatt up for one. Harper sees Orton getting up, so he drops him with a big boot, and turns around into a Sister Abigail from Wyatt. Orton then hits an RKO on Cena for the win.

Carmella vs. Unnamed Jobber: James Ellsworth comes out to the stage to introduce Carmella before her entrance. Mauro mentions the jobber’s name once, but they don’t display it on the screen. She hits some elbows on Carmella, but after some assistance from Ellsworth, Carmella locks her in the Code of Silence for the win.

Dolph Ziggler def. Kalisto: We see Apollo Crews backstage keeping an eye on this match on a monitor. Kalisto gets in some offense, but Ziggler puts him away with a superkick for the win after a short match. He tries to rip off Kalisto’s mask after the match, but Crews comes out for the save.

– Becky Lynch and Naomi are backstage talking about how they’re teaming up tonight to take out some mutual enemies: Alexa Bliss and Mickie James.

Becky Lynch & Naomi def. Alexa Bliss & Mickie James: After some back and forth action in the opening minutes, Becky takes control of the match against Mickie. Becky hits a series of elbows and a t-bone suplex for a two count. Becky goes up top, but after a distraction from Alexa, Mickie knocks her off the turnbuckle and hits a boot to the face. Mickie stays in control of the match for several minutes with the help of Alexa on the apron, then Mickie hits a hurricanrana for a two count. Alexa gets the tag and continues working on Becky until Becky gets the hot tag to Naomi. Naomi comes in with a springboard cross body on Alexa, then she knocks Mickie off the apron. Naomi continues working on Alexa then hits a series of kicks. Mickie and Becky hit the ring and Becky takes her out to ringside. Meanwhile in the ring, Naomi hits a kick to the head of Alexa then a split legged moonsault for the win.

– American Alpha is backstage where they complain about having no competition, and announce their intentions to head to the ring and issue an open challenge to the entire SmackDown roster. After the commercial break, they head out to the ring and are met by The Usos, The Ascension, The Fashion Police, The Vaudevillains, and Heath Slater & Rhyno. All hell breaks loose all over ringside with all of the teams brawling with each other. Slater and Rhyno are the last two standing in the ring with American Alpha, but everyone backs off.

– Daniel Bryan is backstage, where Natalya is accompanied by security guards. Natalya complains that she doesn’t feel safe at work anymore because of Nikki Bella. Nikki shows up and starts arguing with Natalya until Bryan yells at them to stop. Bryan sets up a match between them for Elimination Chamber.

AJ Styles def. Dean Ambrose: This one is a non-title match, with The Miz and Maryse on commentary. Ambrose dominates the opening moments of the match, until Styles dodges a spear in the corner and sends Ambrose into the ring post. Baron Corbin comes out and joins the commentary table, and the distraction allows AJ to take control with a flying forearm in the corner. Styles hits the Pele kick, but Ambrose comes right back with the Lunatic Lariat. Corbin and The Miz start getting into it at ringside, which distracts Ambrose and he goes out to drop The Miz. Back in the ring, AJ hits the Styles Clash on Ambrose for the win. After the bell, Miz hits the Skull Crushing Finale on Ambrose, and Corbin hits the Deep Six on Miz. AJ Styles is shown retreating up the ramp as SmackDown goes off the air.

Former WWE Writer Vents About WrestleMania Storylines, Owens On Talk Is Jericho

– WWE Universal Champion Kevin Owens will be Chris Jericho’s guest on this week’s Talk is Jericho podcast.

– Former WWE writer Brian Maxwell Mann tweeted the following about WWE’s creative direction heading into WrestleMania. There’s been some buzz going around that John Cena’s WrestleMania opponent has been decided and fans won’t be too excited about the matchup. Mann has apparently learned who Cena will be facing and agrees it’s not a good match on paper.

When asked if AJ Styles would be facing Shane McMahon, Mann replied:

In reponse to a rumor of Goldberg capturing the Universal Championship from Kevin Owens and defending it against Brock Lesnar at WrestleMania, Mann thinks the title stipulation does nothing to enhance the match.

What Happened After RAW With Brock Lesnar (Video), Jericho Injury Note

– Chris Jericho suffered a minor ankle injury while being tossed around by Brock Lesnar in Sunday’s Royal Rumble match. It was only a minor injury, as Jericho worked a 14-minute match against Sami Zayn the following night on RAW.

– After last night’s RAW went off the air, Brock Lesnar came out an issued an open challenge to anybody in the WWE locker room. Out came the Big Show. When Show went for a chokeslam, Lesnar maneuvered out of it and hit Show with an F5. Lesnar’s music hit and he left the ring while Big Show remained laying on the canvas.

CM Punk On Working “Feverishly” To Get A Second UFC Fight

CM Punk has been pitching dates and fighter names to UFC President Dana White in hopes of getting booked in his second UFC fight. Punk spoke with Carrlyn Bathe of FOX Sports over the weekend at the NHL All Star game and revealed that he’s training for a return to the Octagon but nothing is official. Video from the interview is above.

Punk lost his UFC debut by first round submission to Mickey Gall at UFC 203 last fall but he says he’s working “feverishly” to get another fight.

“I am working on it feverishly,” Punk said. “I’m throwing names at Dana (White), opponents, dates. I don’t know if he’s waiting for a Chicago show or what the deal is but if it doesn’t happen in the UFC, it will happen somewhere else. I’m dedicated to fighting and training. We’ll get there.”

Punk also commented on how life is treating him, mentioning how he and wife AJ Brooks have been traveling the country.

“First one’s out of the way and life couldn’t be better,” Punk said. “I still don’t have to wake up to an alarm so I really can’t complain about much.”

Photo: New WWE Championship Belt Coming Soon?

Orange County Choppers is working on a new championship belt for WWE, according to a tweet sent out over the weekend. OCC created the WWE Championship belt that was introduced for The Rock for his most recent title run.

Although you can see a photo of the Universal Championship below, it’s unknown if this belt will be a replacement for Kevin Owens’ existing belt.

Sasha Banks Needs To Turn Heel (Editorial)

There is so much content packed into a three hour episode of Monday Night Raw, sometimes it takes a bit for things to register. Last night, Nia Jax demolished Sasha Banks for the second night in a row. The crowd didn’t care. They didn’t really boo when Nia Jax went after Sasha’s injured knee. There was mass confusion in this match because the timekeeper rang the bell too early and the referee had called for the bell yet. Moving past that, the goal of this segment was clearly to get heat on Nia Jax and make the WWE Universe dislike her. Sure, there may have been a smattering of boos but I think this segment was a huge failure. It didn’t help anyone. The WWE has tried to get people invested in this storyline but it just hasn’t worked. When they aired that video of Nia Jax attacking Sasha Banks while she was getting evaluated, did you care? I know I didn’t.

That was two weeks ago and here we are doing the same thing. Sasha Banks is playing up an injury and Nia Jax is taking advantage of it. Bayley begged Sasha to not fight Nia Jax last night on Raw. Sasha dismissed Bayley and ignored her suggestion. She wound up getting her ass kicked by Nia Jax for the second night in a row. After the match, Bayley helped Sasha Banks to the trainer’s room. The WWE clearly laid the groundwork for something between Bayley and Sasha Banks last night. It just got lost in the shuffle.

Nia Jax has been a failure to this point. On the main roster, she has not connected at all. Say what you want about Charlotte, at least she generates a reaction. I enjoy Charlotte’s work as a heel and I think she is terrific at cutting promos that piss people off. Her feud/storyline with Bayley has been very lame so far but that is another rant for another day. Nia Jax doesn’t matter right now. That is because she was off TV way too long and to be honest, she hasn’t had a good match on the main roster. Everything she has been a part of since joining Raw has been forgettable.

This article was supposed to be about Sasha Banks, so why did I bring up Nia Jax? I think Sasha Banks is 10x the heel that Nia Jax is. She is just playing the role of a face right now and it is not working. If it was working, people would have cared that Nia Jax was targeting her injured knee. Nobody cared. Nia Jax just isn’t connecting with the WWE Universe whatsoever and the audience has completely lost interest in Sasha Banks.

Sasha Banks needs to turn heel. If Bayley defeats Charlotte and wins the Raw Women’s Championship, she will need someone to feud with. I’m not sure if Nia Jax is the answer anymore. That hasn’t exactly panned out the way I thought it would. Banks had a particular tone with Bayley and said that “unlike some people, I am not okay with coming up short.” I took that as a direct jab at Bayley for having a smile on her face the night after losing a match for the Raw Women’s Championship against Charlotte. We’ll see what happens but I think it is time to turn Sasha Banks heel. The audience simply does not care about her right now and they do not care about Nia Jax either. Hopefully this interaction with Bayley last night is a sign of things to come for Sasha Banks.

Randy Orton Donates To GoFundMe For Former OVW Trainer

Former OVW Head Trainer Rip Rogers has started a new GoFundMe campaign to help with his personal finances. The campaign can be seen at this link. He currently has a $16000 goal and has raised just under $2000. $1000 of those funds came from Randy Orton, who trained in OVW when it was a WWE developmental territory.

Below is the description of the campaign from Rogers himself:

Here I am 60+ years old with a kid on the way to College. A broken down vehicle and struggling to make ends meet. Spent my life in a profession (Wrestling) I Loved but only reward was seeing others succeed as I never got the respect I deserved. Maybe I was too talented, maybe I was too cocky or maybe I just dont f…Ing know. All I do know is that I deserved better because I put my heart and soul into it. I have a wife who is still with me even after all the terrible things I put her through while I was trying to live the dream. So much sadness I put here through, which are too horrendous to detail here, but men we know what we sometimes do to the ones we love; Foolishness!
Help is what I need, a major windfall is what I want but a miracle is what am looking for. What is worse than a man who has to beg and borrow to take care of his family. Relying on the compassion of others but feel completely degraded and less of a man for all his failures. Many of you know what am talking about. Trying to keep it together teaching others the profession I love and watching as they grow and succeed and knowing the thrill of success they are feeling. I dont mind sharing the wisdom and I love seeing all I touch succeed in living the dream. There’s nothing like it!
If you are so inclined even as little as$1.00 will warrant overwhelming gratitude from me. Too late for me to do much else now but hope, humble myself and ask for compassion.

Thank you sincerely.

Brock Lesnar Challenges Goldberg For WrestleMania, Goldberg Responds

Brock Lesnar and Paul Heyman appeared on tonight’s Raw from Laredo and issued a challenge to Goldberg for Lesnar vs. Goldberg at WrestleMania 33 in Orlando this April.

Goldberg took to Twitter after the segment and announced that he will be on next week’s Raw from Portland, Oregon to respond. He wrote on Twitlonger:

WWE Monday Night Raw Recap & Reaction (1/30)

This Week’s episode of Monday Night Raw kicked off with Kevin Owens and Chris Jericho coming down to the ring. Owens said that nobody thought he had a chance last night and that he has made a career out of proving people wrong. Owens said that he proved Raw GM Mick Foley wrong last night by defeating Roman Reigns. Owens said that he was man enough to admit that he had some help last night. Owens thanked Jericho for his moral support last night and for his continued friendship.

Jericho then boasted that he has spent 4 hours and 56 minutes in the Royal Rumble match during his career. Jericho then referred to himself as the 61 Minute Man and instructed the WWE Universe to tweet while using #61minuteman. Braun Strowman then interrupted and stormed down to the ring. Owens tried to thank Strowman but Braun interrupted. The WWE Universe started to chant “thank you Strowman” because he attacked Roman Reigns last night.

Strowman said that he attacked Roman Reigns for two reasons. One because he hates Roman Reigns and that he wants the Universal Championship shot that Kevin Owens promised him. Strowman rolled the footage of Kevin Owens saying that Strowman was next in line for a title shot. Strowman demanded a Universal Championship tonight on Monday Night Raw. Mick Foley then came down to the entrance ramp and made the match official. It will be Kevin Owens defending his Universal Championship against Braun Strowman later tonight.

Reaction: Roman Reigns didn’t get his revenge on Braun Strowman last night at the Royal Rumble. I’m fully expecting Reigns to show up during the Universal Championship match later on in the show.

Chris Jericho vs Sami Zayn

The match started out back and forth. Zayn hit several Arm Drags and then applied an Arm Bar in the middle of the ring. Jericho fought out of the hold and connected with a chop in the corner. Zayn responded with a few chops of his own and Jericho rolled out of the ring to avoid Zayn. Sami then hit Jericho with a Dropkick through the bottom rope and then brought Jericho back in the ring. Jericho then hit a springboard Dropkick and knocked Zayn to the outside of the ring. Back outside the ring, Zayn connected with a Clothesline. Jericho threw Zayn into the barricade but Sami leaped on top of it and hit a Moonsault as Raw went to a commercial break.

When Raw returned, Jericho had Zayn in a Chinlock. Zayn fought out of the hold but Jericho planted him with a kick to the side of the head. Jericho hit a Hurricanrana on Zayn off the top rope. Zayn connected with a Blue Thunder Bomb for a two count. Sami went for the Helluva Kick but Jericho rolled out of the ring. Back in the ring, Jericho went for the Walls of Jericho but Zayn reversed it and hit a Tornado DDT. Sami once again went for the Helluva Kick but Jericho countered it and applied the Walls of Jericho in the middle of the ring. Zayn powered through and reached the bottom rope to break the hold. Zayn hit an Exploder Suplex to Jericho in the corner and followed it up with the Helluva Kick for the victory.

Winner: Sami Zayn

Sheamus and Cesaro were shown arguing backstage. Bayley interrupted and said that Sheamus and Cesaro need to work together tonight for their six person tag match against Charlotte, Gallows & Anderson. Gallows, Anderson and Charlotte interrupted and they made fun of Bayley, Sheamus and Cesaro.

Kevin Owens and Stephanie McMahon were talking backstage. Kevin Owens said that he was still hurt from last night’s match with Roman Reigns and was not ready to compete against Braun Strowman tonight. Stephanie said that after she deals with Seth Rollins, she will talk to Mick Foley and see if she can get the match tonight canceled.

Tony Nese vs Mustafa Ali

Ali controlled the early part of the match. Nese battled back and knocked Ali to the mat with a shoulder tackle. Nese then launched Ali into the turnbuckle and followed it up with a big time Clothesline. Ali hit a couple Clotheslines of his own and then connected with a Neckbreaker. Ali went to the top turnbuckle but Nese knocked him down. Nese then hit running knee for the victory.

Winner: Tony Nese

Reaction: This match was a whopping 3 minutes and 45 seconds. I’m sure that will get everyone pumped up for tomorrow night’s 205 Live.

Seth Rollins came down to the ring and called out Stephanie McMahon. Stephanie said that she was going to disappoint Rollins on multiple levels. Rollins responded that she does that every night with Triple H. Stephanie said that Triple H is afraid of what he might do to Rollins. Stephanie claimed that she asked Triple H to not come to Monday Night Raw tonight. Stephanie said that Seth should beg her and Triple H for forgiveness. Rollins said that he was sorry that he exposed her husband as gutless. Rollins claimed that he was the greatest threat to Triple H’s legacy. Rollins threatened to show up at Triple H’s house or at WWE Headquarters. Seth said that this will not end before he slays the King (Triple H). Stephanie then said that she lied and that Triple H was on his way to the arena tonight to confront Seth Rollins.

Bayley, Sheamus & Cesaro vs Charlotte, Gallows & Anderson

Bayley and Charlotte started off the match. Anderson and Cesaro immediately tagged in. Cesaro hit an uppercut and Gallows was tagged in. Cesaro then hit Gallows with several uppercuts. Cesaro went to the top rope but Charlotte distracted him. Gallows connected with  a kick to Cesaro and knocked him out of the ring as Raw went to a commercial break.

When Raw returned, Cesaro was trapped in the ring. Anderson hit a Spinebuster for a two count and then tagged in Gallows. Cesaro finally tagged in Sheamus and he beat the hell out of Gallows. Sheamus hit a flying Clothesline off the top rope for a two count. Cesaro was tagged in and Sheamus Clotheslined Anderson out of the ring. Gallows tagged in Charlotte and Bayley hit a Crossbody on her. Cesaro then launched himself onto everyone outside the ring. Bayley then hit the Bayley to Belly on Charlotte for the victory.

Winners: Bayley, Sheamus & Cesaro

Reaction: Charlotte may be undefeated at PPVs but she seems to lose every non-title match on Raw.

Stephanie McMahon and Mick Foley had a conversation backstage. Stephanie assured Foley that Triple H will be there tonight. Stephanie also claimed that Triple H’s music playing during Seth Rollins’ match last week was a technical error. Foley didn’t buy it but said the match with Strowman and Owens for the Universal Championship will still take place later tonight.

Neville came down to the ring with his Cruiserweight Championship. Neville stated that 205 Live now belongs to him. Neville once again insulted the crowd and said they never believed in him. Rich Swann interrupted and said that he couldn’t listen to Neville insult the WWE Universe anymore. Swann said that he had to admit that Neville was one of the very best and tried to shake Neville’s hand. Neville told Swann to bow to Neville. Swann went to walk away and Neville attacked him. Swann fought back and hit Neville with a kick to Neville’s head. Swann then hit Neville with a Suicide Dive and Neville retreated.

Bayley asked Sasha Banks not to compete in her match tonight. Sasha was getting her injured knee taped up and isn’t 100%. Sasha dismissed Bayley and said that unlike some people, she is not happy with coming up short.

Universal Championship Match: Kevin Owens (c) vs Braun Strowman

Jericho joined commentary for this match much to the chagrin of Kevin Owens. Owens wanted Jericho to be ringside. Braun Strowman came out and Chokeslammed Jericho through the announce table. Owens looked scared out of his mind when Strowman entered the ring. Owens got planted with a Clothesline from Strowman to start off the match. Strowman continued to dominate Owens for the next couple of minutes. Owens tried to avoid Strowman but Braun drove him into the barricade.

Strowman charged at Owens but Owens ducked and Braun hit the ring post. Owens then hit the Cannonball on Strowman outside the ring. Back in the ring, Owens connected with a Senton and followed it up with a Frog Splash off the top rope. Owens went back to the top rope but Strowman caught him and hit a Running Powerslam. Roman Reigns then came out to a symphony of boos. Reigns hit a Superman Punch on Strowman and Owens was disqualified. Reigns then Clotheslined Strowman out of the ring but Braun landed on his feet. Reigns hit another Superman Punch on Strowman outside the ring. Reigns then leveled Strowman with a Spear off the steel steps. Reigns then hit a Spear to Kevin Owens and the entire crowd booed.

Winner via DQ: Kevin Owens

Reaction: This was completely predictable. I will say that Strowman Chokeslamming Jericho through the table before the match was pretty cool.

Brock Lesnar were shown getting out of a car and walking into the arena.

Lesnar and Heyman came down to the ring. The crowd started to chant “Goldberg!” as Heyman began to speak. Heyman said that every great athlete has an opponent that has their number. Heyman said that Ronda Rousey was dominant until she got her face kicked in by Holly Holm. Heyman also mentioned Kurt Angle, John Cena, and The Undertaker. Heyman said whenever you say Lesnar now there will always be a “yeah but Goldberg beat him in a minute and twenty-six seconds”. The crowd once again chanted “Goldberg!”. Paul Heyman then announced that Brock Lesnar is challenging Goldberg one final time at Wrestlemania.

Sasha Banks vs Nia Jax

Nia charged at Sasha but Banks moved and Nia hit the ring post. However, Nia grabbed Sasha Banks and swung her injured knee into the ring post a couple of times. Nia Jax applied a submission hold and the bell rang for no reason. Nia Jax continued to apply the hold and Bayley came down to the ring. Nia Jax then walked away and left Bayley and Sasha in the ring. After the match, Sasha Banks was brought to the trainer’s room by Bayley.

Reaction: Everything was executed very poorly here. I’m assuming that it was a botch that the bell rang. The referee then called for the bell a few moments later and it didn’t ring. The crowd was dead silent for this match.

Tornado Tag Team Match: Enzo & Cass vs Rusev & Jinder Mahal

Raw went to a commercial break a minute into the match. When Raw returned, Jinder and Rusev had Big Cass trapped in the corner. Enzo Amore climbed to the top turnbuckle and hit a Crossbody. Mahal and Rusev regained control of the match and threw Cass into the barricade outside the ring. Back in the ring, Rusev planted Enzo with a Body Slam. Cass got back in the ring and took out Mahal and Rusev with a couple of shoulder tackles. Big cass then launched Jinder out of the ring. Cass hit the Empire Elbow but Jinder broke up the pinfall at two. The match ended with Enzo and Cass hitting the Bada Boom Shakalaka for the victory.

Winners: Enzo & Cass

Triple H came down to the ring to address Seth Rollins. Triple H stated that he plucked Rollins from obscurity and made him a star. Triple H said that Rollins didn’t hold up his end of the bargain and collapsed under the pressure. Triple H mocked Rollins for his injury and having to forfeit the title. Triple H said that when Rollins returned without Triple H by his side, he was a massive failure. Triple H said that he gave Rollins the world and Seth spit in his face.

Triple H said it is best for business for him to not confront Rollins when he calls him out. Triple H went on to say that he is trying so hard to not be the guy that fights anymore and is trying to be a creator. Triple H took of his suite jacket and his tie. The crowd started to chant “Triple H!”. Triple H then called out Seth Rollins. Seth came down to the entrance ramp but was attacked by Samoa Joe. Samoa Joe launched Rollins into the barricade and the ring apron. Triple H walked away as Samoa Joe hit three Sentons onto Rollins. Samoa Joe then applied the Coquina Clutch to Rollins in the center of the ring. Rollins was knocked out and Raw went off the air with Samoa Joe standing tall over Rollins.

Reaction: Something legitimately exciting finally happened to close out Monday Night Raw. First off, the Triple H promo was terrific. A summary doesn’t do it justice. I’m sure the WWE will be uploading it to YouTube later on so if you missed it, definitely check it out. Last night, people were hoping for Samoa Joe to come out at number 30. Instead they got Roman Reigns and we all know how that went. Samoa Joe made his debut tonight and made a hell of an impact. Samoa Joe and Seth Rollins can steal any show they are on. They are both that damn good so I cannot wait to see where this feud goes. My issue with Monday Night Raw remains the amount of filler that is on the show. There is just way too much forgettable nonsense on this show every week. However, if they keep bringing up talents like Samoa Joe and adding him to the main roster that will alleviate some of the issue.

The Paul Heyman promo tonight was also solid. There were rumors posted on this site and several others that Goldberg might be challenging Kevin Owens for the Universal Championship before Wrestlemania. I’d rather not see that and just see another Goldberg and Lesnar match. They are big enough names that they don’t need the Universal Championship in that match. Sami Zayn defeated United States Champion Chris Jericho tonight. Michael Cole said that this puts Zayn in line for a shot at the United States Championship. I’m all for that because the title has just been floating around for months. It has been wrapped up in the Roman Reigns, Kevin Owens and Jericho storyline forever. The United States Championship would do a lot for Sami Zayn.

What did you think of tonight’s episode of Monday Night Raw? Let us know in the comments below.

Samoa Joe Debuts On WWE RAW (Video)

Samoa Joe has arrived on the WWE main roster. The former NXT Champion made his RAW debut in the closing segment of Monday’s show. Triple H gave Seth Rollins the chance to finally confront him in the ring, but that’s not exactly how it would go down. As Rollins was making his way to the ring, Samoa Joe appeared from the crowd and decimated Rollins. Triple H left the ringside area and encouraged Joe to continue the beatdown.

Gallows and Sheamus tag in and Sheamus takes control until Charlotte hits him from behind. Cesaro tags in and he clears the ring with Sheamus. Cesaro hits a suicide plancha onto Gallows and Anderson at ringside, while Bayley hits the belly to belly suplex on Charlotte in the ring for the win after a short match.

– We go backstage where Stephanie chews out Foley for booking Rollins in a match against Strowman tonight. Foley says he’s doing his job, and accuses Foley of being behind Triple H’s music mysteriously playing last week. Foley tells her not to treat him like he’s stupid. Stephanie gives her word that Triple H will be here tonight. Foley says he wants to keep his word and deliver Owens vs. Strowman tonight, and Stephanie doesn’t object.

– Neville comes out to the ring and talks about winning the Cruiserweight Title last night. Rich Swann interrupts and they end up brawling. Neville hits a series of kicks, but Swann comes back with some kicks of his own and Neville heads retreating to the back.

Braun Strowman def. Kevin Owens via DQ: Chris Jericho sits at the commentary table for this one, and Braun Strowman notices him there on his way to the ring. Strowman chokeslams Jericho through the announce table before the match. Strowman finally makes it to the ring for the formal ring introductions for this Universal Title match. It’s all Strowman in the opening minutes, and he takes things out to ringside. Strowman misses a clothesline and crashes into the fan barricade. Owens hits a running cannonball on Strowman up against the fan barricade. Back in the ring, Owens hits a kick and a running senton, then a frogsplash off the top rope for a two count. Owens kicks Strowman in the face then goes back up to the top rope. Strowman grabs Owens off the turnbuckle and hits a running powerslam. Roman Reigns comes out to the ring and hits a superman punch on Strowman, and the referee calls for the bell. Reigns throws Strowman to the outside then hits another Superman punch. Reigns jumps off the ring steps with a spear on Strowman at ringside. Reigns gets in the ring and hits Owens with a spear too.

– A black Chevy Suburban pulls up backstage and Brock Lesnar gets out with Paul Heyman. Lesnar and Heyman come out to the ring next, and Heyman has a mic. Heyman admits that Goldberg had Lesnar’s number, and draws comparisons to Hogan having Andre’s number, and Holly Holm having Ronda Rousey’s number. Heyman then talks about how Lesnar had The Undertaker’s number, John Cena’s number, and Kurt Angle’s number. Heyman says every time he talks about Lesnar someone brings up Goldberg, so he must be eliminated. Heyman says Lesnar will challenge Goldberg one final time at WrestleMania in April and he’ll end Goldberg’s legacy.

Nia Jax def. Sasha Banks: Nia is in control of the opening minutes of the match. Nia takes Sasha outside and gets her in a full nelson, then rag-dolls her into the ring post. Back in the ring, Nia targets Sasha’s bad knee. Someone off-camera rings the bell and the referee looks confused. Apparently the match is over, and Nia continues working on the knee. Bayley comes out for the save and chases off Nia.

– We see Bayley backstage helping Sasha into the trainer’s office.

Enzo and Cass def. Rusev and Jinder Mahal: Enzo and Cass cut promos on the heels before the match. This one is under Tornado Tag rules, so all four men are legal at all times. Enzo and Cass clear the ring early on and Enzo goes for a suicide dive on Rusev and Mahal outside, but they catch Enzo and slam him into the fan barricade. Rusev and Mahal focus their attention on Cass next and take turns beating him down around ringside. Back in the ring, the heels keep working on Enzo and keep him grounded. Cass recovers and hits a splash on rusev in the corner then throws Jinder to the outside. Cass powerslams Rusev then hits the Empire Elbow, but Jinder breaks up the pin. Enzo throws Mahal outside, then Enzo and Cass hit the Bada Boom on Rusev for the win.

– We see a limo pulling up backstage, and Triple H gets out. HHH comes out to the ring and begins cutting a promo on Seth Rollins. He says he handed the world to Rollins, and Rollins spit in his face. He says Rollins is a huge failure and let him down. Triple H says he never came out to confront Rollins because Stephanie advised him not to, and he’s been busy trying to create the next Seth Rollins out of someone in NXT. HHH says he’s done trying to be professional and he’s going to go old school on Rollins, and he calls him out to the ring. Seth Rollins comes out, but before he can get in the ring, Samoa Joe blindsides Rollins and beats him down all over ringside. Joe throws Rollins in the ring as Triple H heads backstage. Rollins tries to fight back, with Joe drops him with a kick to the head then hits three senton drops. Joe locks Rollins in the coquina clutch until he passes out, then RAW goes off the air.

Potential Spoilers: Storyline Plans For WWE’s Universal Championship Through WrestleMania

Sunday’s WWE Royal Rumble pay-per-view saw Kevin Owens retain the Universal Championship against Roman Reigns in a very physical no disqualification match. With Chris Jericho suspended high above the ring in a shark cage, Braun Strowman stormed the ring, laid waste to Reigns and handed another victory to KO. Following Owens’ successful defense, Dave Meltzer of f4wonline.com has revealed WWE’s plans for the Universal Championship through WrestleMania 33.

As of this writing, the plan is for Kevin Owens to defend the Universal Championship against Bill Goldberg at Fastlane, which takes place on Sunday, March 5th. The big scoop is that the Universal Championship will not be defended at RAW live events following Fastlane, a strong indication that Goldberg will be the man to end KO’s title reign.

The scenario is already being compared to The Rock and Brock Lesnar’s most recent WWE title runs, with part-time stars being used to elevate the title without having to work live events.

Goldberg as Universal Champion also means the big showdown with Brock Lesnar at WrestleMania will be a title match. Kevin Owens vs. Chris Jericho has been long rumored for Mania, so perhaps Jericho will have a hand in Owens losing his prized possession at Fastlane.

Superstars Got A Ride Down The Entrance Ramp At The Royal Rumble (Photos)

You may have noticed that the set at the Royal Rumble was pretty much Monday Night Raw’s set. You also may have noticed that the entrance ramp was insanely long and it took almost every Superstar in the Royal Rumble around 30 seconds to reach the ring. The cameras cut away from certain Superstars when they made their entrance and returned to them as they were entering the ring. This was because they were being driven to the ring in a golf cart down the absurdly long entrance ramp.

Discussion: Why Was Roman Reigns Even In The Royal Rumble?

Roman Reigns entered the Royal Rumble match last night at number thirty. There were rumors swirling around for weeks that there would be some big names showing up at this year’s Royal Rumble. Samoa Joe, Kenny Omega, Kurt Angle and Finn Balor were some of the names people were throwing around that might show up at the Royal Rumble. None of them did. That would be fine if Roman Reigns didn’t enter the match last night.

The crowd in San Antonio was ready to erupt for whomever came out an number thirty. They were hoping for a gigantic surprise and were ready to jump on their feet to celebrate. Everyone watching around the world on the WWE Network were ready to see who that last man was going to be. Who was going to go face to face with The Undertaker, Randy Orton and Bray Wyatt to determine who would be main eventing Wrestlemania. The buzzer hit, there was a second of silence and out came Roman freaking Reigns.

It has become a yearly tradition. The Royal Rumble inevitably falls apart and the WWE Universe collectively loses their minds. The stakes are massive at the Royal Rumble and it essentially signifies the direction the WWE is going in. When Roman Reigns came down to the ring, there was a collective thought of “holy sh** here we go again”. I was completely shocked that Reigns was in the Royal Rumble and I started to just root for anyone to win the match besides Roman Reigns.

Roman Reigns lost his match with Kevin Owens for the Universal Championship last night before the Royal Rumble match. It makes absolutely no sense for him to be apart of the match. If he was there, why didn’t AJ Styles get a spot in the match? All of these thoughts were going through my head that I barely had any time to comprehend that Roman Reigns actually eliminated The Undertaker.

Randy Orton eventually own the Royal Rumble and I was just ecstatic that Reigns didn’t win it. I couldn’t believe that the WWE was once again going to attempt to shove Roman Reigns on the WWE Universe. Randy Orton wasn’t even on my radar of Superstars that I wanted to see win the Royal Rumble. However, I was happy that he did because I have absolutely zero interest in Roman Reigns main eventing another Wrestlemania.

In my reaction article, I said that the Royal Rumble was great. It was until Roman Reigns showed up in the Royal Rumble match. Then I was just happy that Roman Reigns didn’t win. I still think last night’s show was very good. Kevin Owens and Reigns put on a very good Universal Championship match. AJ Styles and John Cena stole the show and put on a terrific WWE Championship match. However, the fact that Roman Reigns was even in the Royal Rumble has been bothering me more and more as time goes on.

I thought it was a given that if you are in a match for a major title, you are not in the Royal Rumble match on the same night. Apparently those things do not apply to Roman Reigns. At this point, none of this negative reaction is the fault of Roman Reigns. He is who he is. I’ve always thought he would be best served to just come down to the ring, say very little and kick ass. Instead, the WWE is seemingly determined to have Reigns be something that he is not. He is simply not “The Guy” in my opinion. The only reason I can come up with that Reigns was in the Royal Rumble match was that the WWE wanted to annoy people. If that was the goal, then mission accomplished.

Main Card:

Raw Women’s Championship Match: Charlotte (c) vs Bayley

Charlotte started out the match in control. Charlotte launched Bayley out of the ring and posed for the crowd. Bayley then tossed Charlotte out of the ring and continued the attack outside the ring. Bayley connected with a Crossbody off the second rope and then brought Charlotte back in the ring. Bayley went for the pin but Charlotte kicked out and rolled out of the ring. Bayley followed her but Charlotte drove Bayley into the ring apron and then the steel steps.

Back in the ring, Charlotte bashed Bayley’s head off the ring mat and followed it up with a Suplex. Charlotte continued to beatdown Bayley with a chop in the corner. Charlotte then locked in a Chinlock in the middle of the ring. Charlotte controlled the next few minutes of the match and connected with a Neckbreaker and a boot to Bayley’s face.

Charlotte continued to control the match and taunted Bayley several times. Bayley fought back but both Superstars connected with a Clothesline at the same time and they both fell to the mat. Bayley and Charlotte then traded chops but Bayley got the upper hand and and connected with a springboard Crossbody. Bayley climbed to the top turnbuckle but jumped down and stomped on Charlotte instead. Bayley went back up to the top turnbuckle and connected with an Elbow Drop for a two count.

Charlotte locked in the Figure Eight in the center of the ring. Bayley reversed the hold but Charlotte reversed it once again and used the ropes for leverage. The referee caught it but Charlotte held onto the hold for a couple of seconds to inflict more pain to the knees of Bayley. Charlotte was bleeding from her mouth and went for a Moonsault off the top rope but Bayley got her knees up.

Bayley charged at Charlotte while she was perched on the top turnbuckle but Charlotte was ready for it and shoved Bayley out of the ring. Charlotte connected with the Natural Selection on the ring apron and won the match. Charlotte is now 16-0 at PPVs.

Winner & Still Raw Women’s Champion: Charlotte

Reaction: Solid match to start off the show. I think these two can put on a better match and I’m guessing that we will see that in the near future. I think Charlotte should hold onto the Raw Women’s Championship at least until Wrestlemania.

No DQ Universal Championship Match: Kevin Owens (c) vs Roman Reigns

Chris Jericho was locked in the shark cage above the ring for this match. Jericho and Owens attacked Reigns before the match started. Reigns fought back and laumched Jericho into the side of the cage and then threw him into the cage. Jericho freaked out in the cage and begged for it to not be raised above the ring. The match finally started as the cage was being raised and Kevin Owens attacked Reigns.

Reigns fought back and knocked Owens outside the ring. Reigns followed him and threw Owens over the barricade. Owens and Reigns fought through the crowd for the next couple of minutes. The action returned to the ringside area and Reigns was in control. Owens launched Reigns shoulder first into the steel steps. Owens dragged out a bunch of chairs from under the ring and attacked Reigns with one. Owens set up four chairs outside the ring. Reigns got back up but Owens hit him with a monitor and then connected with a Cannonball as Roman was up against the barricade.

Owens placed two more chairs on top of the four chairs he had already set up. Owens targeted the ribs of Reigns with a steel chair. Owens once again placed another chair on top of the six he had set up. Reigns fought back as the two were battling on the ring apron. Reigns went for a Suplex through the chairs but Owens blocked it. Back in the ring, Reigns planted Owens with two Clotheslines. The crowd booed as Reigns got pumped up. Reigns launched Owens shoulder first into the ring post.

Roman brought out a table from under the ring and brought it to the ring. Reigns began to set up the table but Owens planted him with a Backstabber for a two count. Owens then shoved the table out of the ring and the crowd booed. Owens mocked Reigns and charged at him but Reigns connected with a boot and followed it up with a Powerbomb for a two count. Jericho rattled the cage above the ring and cheered Owens on.

Reigns set up for the Superman Punch but Kevin Owens rolled out of the ring. Reigns followed him and hit him with the Drive By. Owens set up Reigns on the table outside the ring and Owens hit him with a ridiculous Frog Splash off the top turnbuckle through the table. The crowd broke out in a “holy sh**!” chant. Owens brought a chair into the ring and hit Reigns with it a couple of times. Owens set up the chair in the corner but Reigns got up and beat the hell out of Owens in the corner. Owens battled back and kicked Reigns in the face and launched him into the chair in the corner. Jericho tossed brass knuckles to Owens in the ring and Byron Saxton flipped out. Owens went for a Superman Punch with the brass knuckles but Reigns blocked it. Owens went for the Superman Punch again and connected but Reigns kicked out at two.

Kevin Owens went for a Powerbomb onto a chair but Reigns reversed it into a Samoan Drop through the chair. Reigns went for a pinfall but Owens kicked out at two. Reigns went outside the ring and brought another table into the ring. Reigns hit a Superman Punch but Owens kicked out at two. Reigns set up the table in the corner and went for the Spear but Owens blocked it and hit a Stunner on Reigns for a two count. Owens then stomped Reigns in the corner and landed another Cannonball.

Kevin Owens went for a Superplex on Reigns through the chairs set up earlier in the match. Reigns blocked it and hit a Superman Punch and Owens fell through the chairs. Reigns Powerbombed Owens through the announce table and brought him back into the ring. Reigns was setting up for the Spear but Braun Strowman attacked Reigns from behind. Strowman Chokeslammed Reigns onto the German announce table and then hit the Running Powerslam on Reigns through the table in the ring. Kevin Owens then crawled onto Reigns and pinned him.

Winner & Still Universal Champion: Kevin Owens

Reaction: I wasn’t excited for this match at all and it turned out to be awesome. There were rumors of a Roman Reigns and Braun Strowman storyline occurring after the Royal Rumble but those rumors included the Universal Championship. Reigns can still win it before Wrestlemania but it seems he may be preoccupied with Strowman for a while.

Cruiserweight Championship Match: Rich Swann (c) vs Neville

Neville dominated the first several minutes of the match. The match was really slow and the crowd wasn’t too into it. Neville went out of the ring and Swann followed him. Neville launched Swann into the barricade a couple of times. Back in the ring, Neville went for a move off the top rope but Swann planted him with a Superkick. Swann followed it up with a Hurricanrana. Neville went outside the ring and Swann hit a big time Splash onto him. Swann and Neville got back into the ring before the referee could count to ten.

Swann controlled the next few minutes of the match. Swann went to the top turnbuckle but Neville shoved him and Swann fell to the top turnbuckle. Neville knocked him to the mat and then hit a Superkick. Swann connected with a kick of his own and went for a pinfall but Neville got his foot on the bottom rope. Neville connected with a Superplex for a two count but Neville immediately applied a Crossface for the submission victory.

Winner & New Cruiserweight Champion: Neville

Reaction: This match was alright but I was expecting much more. It makes sense for Neville to be the Cruiserweight Champion, he is pretty much the only member of the division that generates a response from the WWE Universe.

WWE Championship Match: AJ Styles (c) vs John Cena

Cena connected with a Clothesline on Styles to start off the match. Cena charged at Styles in the corner but AJ caught him with an elbow. Styles connected with a couple of knees to Cena’s head while he was on the mat. Styles took a break to pose for the crowd. Styles taunted Cena and went for another knee but Cena got out of the way and hit Styles with a Back Body Drop. Cena went for the AA but Styles landed on his feet and connected with a kick that sent Cena to the mat.

Cena battled back and hit a couple of shoulder tackles. Styles fought back and hit a Hurricanrana and a Clothesline to Cena in the corner. Styles hit a German Suplex and followed it up with a Facebuster for a two count. Cena got back to his feet and connected with a Clothesline that sent Styles flipping to the mat. Cena then hit the Five Knuckle Shuffle and went for another AA but Styles once again avoided it. Styles was perched on the top turnbuckle and Cena hit a couple of right hands to the face of Styles. Cena went for a Superplex but Styles slipped through and put Cena into a Torture Rack and then planted him with a Powerbomb for a two count.

Styles went for the Phenomenal Forearm but Cena avoided it and hit the AA for a two count. Cena geared up in the corner and landed a big time Clothesline for a two count. Cena once again geared up in the corner and went for another Clothesline but Styles avoided it and hit the Pele Kick. Styles hit the Phenomenal Forearm for a two count. Cena planted Styles with a Facebuster and both men were on the mat.

AJ and Cena traded punches when they got back to their feet. Styles got the upper hand and locked in the Calf Crusher. Cena reversed it into the STF but Styles got out of the hold. Cena went to the top turnbuckle and went for a Leg Drop but Styles countered it into a Powerbomb. Styles then planted Cena with a Styles Clash for a two count.

Styles went to the ring apron and went for a springboard 450 Splash but Cena got his knees up. Styles once again went for the Styles Clash but Cena reversed it and catapulted Styles into the turnbuckle. Cena hit an AA off the top turnbuckle and Styles kicked out. Cena couldn’t believe it and had a look of disbelief on his face. Cena went for another AA but Styles countered it into the Styles Clash. AJ went for the Phenomenal Forearm but Cena caught him and hit an AA. Cena then rolled through and hit a second AA for the pinfall victory. John Cena has now tied Ric Flair with 16 World Championships.

Winner & New WWE Champion: John Cena

Reaction: What a match. There really is nothing more to say. People will obviously be pissed off that Cena won but hopefully that doesn’t take away from how good this match was. Hopefully these two meet again in the near future.

Reigns eliminated Bray Wyatt and went for a Spear to Roman Reigns but Orton caught him with an RKO. Orton then Clotheslined Reigns out of the ring and won the Royal Rumble.

Winner: Randy Orton

Reaction: This was a great Royal Rumble. The crowd almost flipped out when they thought that Roman Reigns was going to win the match. There was no Samoa Joe, Kenny Omega or Kurt Angle despite all the rumors. Randy Orton wouldn’t have been my first choice to win the Royal Rumble match but I cannot imagine what the reaction would have been if Roman Reigns had won it. Overall, this was a great event and I found it very entertaining.
