Vince McMahon: No Plans To Slow Down, Never Sleeps, Doesn’t Miss Being On TV

WWE Chairman & CEO Vince McMahon recently spoke with NOLA.com as part of the promotional hype for WrestleMania returning to New Orleans in 2018. When asked if he sees himself ever slowing down, Vince vehemently shot down the notion.

“No. No, never. This is not work for me. I never go to work. Ever. Every aspect of the business, whether it’s working with the talent or the writing staff, even on occasion working with the legal guys, it’s all a big family. I never go to work.”

At 71 years old, working as hard as he does, surely Vince must get tired and enjoy recharging himself overnight, right?

“I never sleep,” he said. “I don’t know that it’s an age thing. I just do it because I do it. It’s just something you love and have the passion for. You can’t get enough of that. How can you get enough of what’s really, really good? You can have steak every night and get accustomed to that, but that’s not what this is. This is not work.”

“Mr. McMahon” is one of the most successful heels in WWE history. Fans bow down to Vince as a sign of respect and it’s always a big event when he appears on WWE television. That said, does Vince miss being on camera?

“God, no. That was a chore. I enjoyed it, but it just ate up so much time personally, and I couldn’t produce and direct, which is what I love to do. I love to help create new stars and tweak this and help them grow here. I can’t do that as a talent because you have to have your head wrapped around that. I’ve done both in the past, but it’s not what I prefer to do. It takes an extraordinary amount of energy to be able to do that. Trying to both is difficult. It really is.”

AJ Styles Reveals His Favorite Match Of 2016

WWE Champion AJ Styles has had one hell of a year. Since making his shocking WWE debut at last year’s Royal Rumble, the Phenomenal one went on to have one of the best “rookie” years in WWE history and wasted no time establishing himself as one of the most valuable players on the entire roster. Of all the memorable matches Styles fought in 2016, he’s got a favorite. During an interview with Al.com, Styles said:

“I have a lot of great matches in 2016. There are some I was real proud of. With Roman Reigns — and don’t get me wrong, WrestleMania was also a big one, too — but I just felt like my matches with Roman Reigns set the tone of how AJ Styles was going to be presented in 2016, like this guy who gets after it and has great matches with just about anyone on the roster.”

Styles also spoke about one of his WWE “dream opponents” – Seth Rollins. The two Superstars currently compete on different brands, but Styles is sure that they will cross paths at some point.

“That’s going to happen. There’s no doubt. At some point this year, hopefully there will be another draft. And whatever happens, at some point, before him and I both retire, we’re going to see each other in the ring. There’s no doubt about it.”

Triple H Comments On Kenny Omega, Teases More Events Like The UK Tournament

Nicolas Atkin published an article today on ESPN that discussed the possibilities of Kenny Omega coming to the WWE. In a conference call to promote the UK Championship Tournament that is happening this weekend, Triple H referenced Omega,

“As far as Kenny Omega goes, I’m just interested in talent, period.”

“If somebody is talented as a performer and they wanna come work for the WWE, if they wanna come to the largest platform in the world where they can truly show what they do off on a global basis, then WWE is the choice for them. If they wanna come work for us and they’re very talented, then I’m interested in talking to them, and that’s across the board.

“To me, anytime anybody questions me on a talent — Am I interested in them? — the fact that you’re questioning me on them means that person is probably pretty talented, so, yes, I’m interested.”

He also hinted that the WWE will be looking to have more events like the United Kingdom Championship Tournament in other places in the future.

“What exactly qualifies a Grand Slam Champion in WWE has changed several times as the roster of championships has, and only six Superstars had managed to meet the current set of criteria: Intercontinental Champion, United States Champion, any permutation of the Tag Team Championship and either active heavyweight title — as in, WWE Championship or, now, the WWE Universal Championship.”

In addition to Chris Jericho, other Grand Slam Champions include Edge, Big Show, The Miz, Eddie Guerrero, Daniel Bryan and Kurt Angle.

The Rock Responds To Tom Brady By Roasting Him (Video)

Tom Brady posted a painfully awkward video on Facebook calling out The Rock and asking what kind of sleep wear he puts on when he goes to bed. This is an obvious Under Armour advertisement but still, Brady is just not good at stuff like this. The Rock responded and completely roasted Tom Brady’s acting skills. The Rock also poked fun at how Brady was sitting. The video that Tom Brady posted on Facebook is also shown in it’s entirety in The Rock’s response. Check out video below.

Now, this wasn’t even the worst thing that Tom Brady has done when it comes to acting. Who could forget that terrible mattress commercial?

Ryback: John Cena is a “Piece Of Sh*t” and “Poison” to the Wrestling Business

On the latest installment of his Conversation With The Big Guy podcast, former WWE Superstar Ryback went off on John Cena, calling him a “piece of sh*t” and “poison” to the wrestling business.

“He’s been a piece of sh*t to me since Day One. I was nothing but nice and respectful to him and I know Alex Riley just came out and [admitted he had issues with Cena] and when people hear what really happened with that, they’re going to lose their sh-t. Like, and I know, I have a pretty good idea of what happened with that and the guys in WWE. And, one, it’s f-cking hilarious. And, two, it’s hilarious what people will find out about John.”

Ryback says Cena would regularly bury him and Alex Riley when they were in the ring and blames Cena for ruining Alex Riley’s WWE career.

“Because of John Cena and I swear to God, I swear to f–king God, because of John Cena, his career is over in the WWE for no f–king reason outside of John and his personal issues. Unbelievable.”

Despite his contributions to the wrestling business, Ryback considers John Cena a “poison” that holds people back if he deems them to be a threat. He went so far as to claim Triple H might be using NXT as a way to shield up and coming talent from John Cena’s influence.

“He has been poison to the wrestling industry. I told [co-host Pat Buck] this before. We talked about this before. And again, this is my opinion, but I think I’m pretty accurate on this is I think he’s done so much harm for so long to new talent to getting over, breaking out, over there.

Sami Callihan Talks About What Went Wrong In NXT, His Recent Success

Former NXT Superstar Sami Callihan appeared on Sean Waltman’s X-Pac 12360 podcast this week to discuss his departure from WWE, the success he’s enjoyed ever since and why he’s earned the title of “the most booked professional wrestler on the planet.”

Here are some highlights sent in by producer Christy Olson:

Sami on what went wrong with his NXT run:

“I’m never going to bash WWE because that’s now how I am. But I always wanted to be in WWE, and one day I do believe I’ll be back there. All I ever wanted or needed was an opportunity, and I never got that opportunity. It’s one thing to be given the ball. It’s another thing to be given the ball and have some guys to block for you. I never had those blockers. You’re only going to go so far when there’s not a lot of direction, not a lot of, ‘OK, this is what’s needed, this is what’s wanted.’ I feel like if they would’ve just let the chains off me and were like, yo go be Sami Callihan, I’d be on Raw right now as one of the top guys.”

On his success since leaving WWE:

“Like it or not, people can hate me or love me. I’m the most booked professional wrestler on this planet. Every week, I’m an independent wrestler building my own brand—four, five, six shows in a week! Independent wrestlers don’t do that. There’s only a handful, a group of elite independent talent that do that and I’m one of them. I’ll be damned if I go down without swinging. I built my own brand by myself and that’s something really cool that nobody can ever take away from me.”

Sami reveals he was asked to change his stretch muffler finishing move at NXT:

“Another thing they didn’t want me to do originally. A thing that made me me and a move that I had built for ten years all over the world. They were like, no let’s make that s***** slingshot splash thing you do your finish. I’m like, whatever you want. I wish I would’ve been like, no, that’s not a finish. That’s not my finish.”

What happened after Sami left NXT:

“When I left WWE my phone blew up. The first day that I quit I was kind of like, you know what? I’m kind of nervous. They tried to get me to do the thirty day, like hey we’ll pay you for thirty days but you can’t work anywhere. I took a real risk and I said, I don’t want your f****** money. I want to go show up at shows this Saturday. Three days later I showed up at AAW in Chicago and the rest is history. I knew if I waited for thirty days all my buzz, all my mystique would be gone. I had to take a risk and go out there for non-guaranteed money and just hoped it worked out. And trust me when I say it worked out.
The biggest lesson he learned from his time at NXT: Follow your gut. The thing is, at the end of the day only you know you. There’s going to be all these different people, different coaches, different agents, HHH, people up above that are going to tell you, hey this is how you be Sami Callihan.

It’s like, well you’re not Sami Callihan! You don’t know what’s going on in my head or how I process things. So you really can’t tell me how to be myself. That’s one of the things I wish they would do more. You see the guys that they allow to do that are the guys that succeed. Like when Kevin Steen, Kevin Owens, came in there he got super lucky. They let him be Kevin and it works. Don’t fix something that’s not broken.”

How he feels watching his friends on WWE TV:

“I don’t like to live in the past on things. I see guys that either A, I’ve helped out or B, I’ve shared the ring with or C, I’ve traveled the world with. Now they’re World Champions on Raw, or they’re in the cruiserweight division. I’m still in the indies busting my ass. But then I realize that my path is a little different. I’m special. I am going to go down as being legendary, even if it’s for all the wrong reasons.

Everyone has their own path and my path is a little bit different. But I think that’s what’s great about me. That’s why I’m so endearing to people and that’s why I connect so much. I’m a guy that kind of said f*** you to the system. I was like, I’m going to do this my own way and I’m going to prove to you why I am an entity. I love WWE more than anything. I want to be on WrestleMania. But I obviously saw that the position that I was in, that wasn’t going to happen. So I had to do what I had to do and take that roll of the dice and bet on myself for once, and that’s what I did.”

How Sami began working for Lucha Undergroud and what he likes about it:

A lot of my friends work for that company and they’re like, yo, you need to get Sami Callihan right now. You need to hit the up right now. The next day I got an email and a call and I started talking to them. I could’ve gone a bunch of different places but I went with Lucha because I like what Lucha’s doing. It’s different, it’s cool, it’s fun. They’re not insulting people’s intelligence, being like, yo this is real. It’s put together as a TV show where you can have time travelers, you can have mystical ghosts, you can have anything you want.

That’s what I love about pro wrestling—anything is possible, and it truly does make you believe. This dude really is a time traveler, this guy really is a dragon. On top of that I like their business model. Their business model is like, sure we’re under contract to them, but I can still work on the indies, I can still work around the world, I can still continue to build my brand and do what I want I do and help build other companies.”

Sami also reveals that Billy Gunn is like a father to him, explains why he’s The Undertaker of dark matches, and much more. Get it all on this week’s brand new episode of AfterBuzz TV’s X-Pac 12360. Two words for you…DOWNLOAD IT!

NXT Superstar Undergoing Surgery This Week, Feud Put On Hold

Shane Thorne of TM-61 suffered a knee injury at the 1/5 NXT tapings from Full Sail University. He’s scheduled to undergo surgery this week and will be out of action for several months, according to The Wrestling Observer.

The injury reportedly came during a match with TM-61 taking on The Revival. It appears to be airing on the 1/25 NXT episode.

Thorne’s injury is putting a feud with TM-61 vs. The Revival on hold. The Observer reports that the feud was going to be a “significant” one.

Naomi On Her WWE TV Absence, Next Week’s SmackDown, Goldberg – Fastlane Update

https://twitter.com/BMOHBC/status/819246560894537728

– The BMO Harris Bradley Center in Milwaukee has officially announced Goldberg for the 3/5 WWE Fastlane PPV.

– Next week’s WWE SmackDown will feature Alexa Bliss defending the Women’s Championship inside a steel cage against Becky Lynch plus a segment with Carmella taking James Ellsworth shopping for his new look.

– Another week went by with no Naomi appearance on SmackDown and as you can imagine, her “#Naomob” expressed their unhappiness on social media. Naomi took to Twitter and wrote the following on why she’s been away from WWE TV as of late. It’s been reported that she did recently recover from an ankle injury but she doesn’t mention that in her tweet.

Which NXT Superstars Are Being Groomed For Main Roster Call-Ups?

The Wrestling Observer has revealed which NXT Superstars are in the “Terry Taylor Class” at the WWE Performance Center, which is the class that grooms wrestlers currently being considered for somewhat imminent call-ups to the main roster.

The main class features NXT Champion Shinsuke Nakamura, Tag Team Champions DIY, Kassius Ohno, the injured Hideo Itami, TM-61, Tye Dillinger, Elias Samson, Alexander Wolfe and Andrade Almas.

The second group, which aren’t considered for near imminent call-ups but will be moved to the next class when top talents get called up, are Oney Lorcan, Roderick Strong, The Revival, The Authors of Pain, Riddick Moss, Tino Sabbatelli, Wesley Blake, Buddy Murphy, Dan Matha, Aleister Black and Killian Dain.

The Observer notes that Bobby Roode has a different contract and does not train at the WWE PC, which means he would not be in the class. This also likely applies for Samoa Joe, Austin Aries and Eric Young.

This Week’s WWE SmackDown Live Viewership

The January 10th edition of WWE SmackDown Live averaged 2,533,000 viewers on the USA Network. This is slightly down from last week’s 2,596,000 viewers.

SmackDown placed at #4 in the top 150 most-viewed shows on cable for the night. This is down from last week’s #3 ranking.

This week’s show was headlined by John Cena vs. Baron Corbin.

The Undertaker vs. John Cena Update, More Backstage News On WrestleMania 33 Plans

Vince McMahon has changed his mind on one of the biggest WWE matches of the modern era – John Cena vs. The Undertaker. That match had been considered for WrestleMania 33 in Orlando but it’s now off the books.

No word yet on who Taker or Cena will face at WrestleMania but it was reported by The Wrestling Observer Newsletter that Taker won’t be facing Braun Strowman, as has been speculated, and Taker will not challenge for the WWE Championship or the Universal Championship.

The current plan for the RAW Women’s Championship is a fatal 4 way with Charlotte vs. Bayley vs. Sasha Banks vs. Nia Jax, instead of the expected Charlotte vs. Bayley singles match.

There are set to be 6 or 7 main event-level singles matches at WrestleMania 33 this year, not including cruiserweights or women. Top Superstars still without matches are Finn Balor, AJ Styles, Cena, Roman Reigns and Dean Ambrose, who may defend the WWE Intercontinental Championship in a multi-man ladder match. It looks as if Chris Jericho will be defending the WWE United States Championship against Kevin Owens.

As of this week, the confirmed top matches remain – Triple H vs. Seth Rollins, Goldberg vs. Lesnar and Shaq vs. Big Show. The Observer speculates that Lesnar vs. Goldberg will be the main event.

Samoa Joe To Wrestle At WrestleMania 33?

There’s a lot of talk behind the scenes about Samoa Joe coming up from NXT to the main roster soon. According to the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, WWE officials are reportedly considering a “monster push” on the main roster for Joe, one that would see him in one of the top matches at WrestleMania 33 in Orlando.

Joe likely will not be appearing on NXT TV before the Royal Rumble, which adds to the rumors of a surprise Royal Rumble appearance for the former NXT Champion.

Cody Rhodes Returns To TNA At Impact Tapings, Alexander & Fox Breakup Video

At today’s Impact tapings, Cody Rhodes made his return and beatdown Moose. Cody was pissed off that Brandi had Moose’s number in her phone. Rhodes also held up a hand gesture similar to the Bullet Club’s in NJPW. TNA has done a bunch of tapings recently so it is unclear when the episode of Impact featuring Cody’s return will air. It will most likely be at the end of January or early February.

Last night on 205 Live, Alicia Fox assisted Noam Dar in his match against her boyfriend, Cedric Alexander. This led to Alexander breaking up with Fox backstage. Alicia then threw a tantrum for the ages. This video gets quite loud so beware if you are wearing headphones.
