The Rock Spotted At The Staples Center – Site of Tonight’s WWE RAW

The Rock was up early this morning at the Staples Centre in L.A, which also happens to be the venue of tonight’s RAW. The People’s champ posted a photo of himself and Florence Pugh (who plays the role of Paige in Rock’s upcoming movie on her family) earlier this morning.

Fighting With My Family

The film, “Fighting With My Family” stars the Rock and is being co-produced by WWE Studios. It centres on the family of Saraya Knight (real name Julia Hamer-Bevis) and her family. Saraya is the mother of the currently injured WWE superstar Paige.

WWE Studios co-producing the movie may allow the Rock to play a bigger role at this year’s Wrestlemania.  In recent years, The Rock has made unannounced appearances, including an unannounced match against Eric Rowen last year. In the two years prior, Rock appeared with other WWE legends for an in-ring promo segment and also with Ronda Rousey for a segment with Stephanie McMahon. From WrestleManias 27-29, Rock’s feud with John Cena took centre stage at the event.

While the Rock is in L.A at the same time as RAW, there is no guarantee he appears on the show. As of yet, WWE have not advertised him as appearing.

AJ Styles Talks About Working For TNA, ROH, New Japan & WWE

WWE Superstar AJ Styles took part in a Q&A panel at Wizard World Portland on Saturday night. Styles spoke about his time in TNA, ROH, New Japan and his current WWE run. When asked about his time following TNA and before joining WWE, Styles said,

“Ring of Honor treated me real well, and New Japan treated me like a superstar. So I’ve got to give credit to them, who helped boost my ego a little bit because it was definitely flattened due to TNA’s service. But then — doing all that and then having the opportunity to come to WWE and…you know, whether people like it or not, WWE is easy, the biggest — you know, when it comes to wrestling, it doesn’t get any bigger than the WWE. And being there means you’ve finally made it.”

Regarding his time in WWE so far, he said, “I can tell you this. I am certainly happy with [making it] to WWE. It is thus far head and shoulders over any other place I’ve ever worked.”

Former TNA Champion Magnus In Talks For A Potential Return

Former TNA World Champion Magnus has been offered a deal to return tot he company, according to F4wonline.com. Magnus worked for TNA from 2008-2015. Shortly after his TNA run ended, he said this about the situation:

“It was my decision. The way my contract was structured, without getting too detailed, they couldn’t release me. There was something in there that prevented that, which was nice. It was due to roll over at the end of June. At the beginning of June I decided to give them notice that they hadn’t contacted me regarding anything. It was structured that if they hadn’t made contact about it a month out, I had the option to end it. There was a brief conversation, it was really friendly. I think they knew how I felt, and I knew they were in a position financially where it was getting difficult for them to honor contracts like mine.

Not trying to disclose too much, but I got it on pretty good authority from the office that I was in the upper echelon as pay is concerned. I knew they weren’t in a position to offer the same structure. A year ago I had made peace with the idea of leaving. I always delivered everything they gave me whether I liked it or not. I knew in my gut a year ago I wasn’t going to stay.”

Magnus is the husband of Mickie James, who recently returned to WWE. With Mickie James wrestling for SmackDown Live, many speculated that Magnus might not be far behind.

Zack Sabre Jr. Heading to New Japan Pro Wrestling

Top UK independent wrestler Zack Sabre Junior will soon be joining the ranks of New Japan Pro Wrestling. The news was first reported by Dave Meltzer on Wrestling Observer Radio.

ZSJ has been a mainstay of the British Independent wrestling scene for a number of years now having been a featured talent for PROGRESS, Rev Pro and more recently WCPW. His high profile showing in the WWE Crusierweight Classic tournament and PWG’s Battle of Los Angeles in 2015/2016 helped to elevate his status as “the best technical wrestler on the planet.”

Sabre Jr is likely to be a part of New Japan’s annual Best of The Super Juniors tournament upon his arrival (an event won by fellow Brit Will Ospreay last year).

Finn Balor Advertised For Upcoming WWE Live Event

Former WWE Universal Champion Finn Balor is being advertised for an upcoming WWE live event.

Balor has been out of action since suffering a labrum tear at SummerSlam last year. WWE has yet to announce an official return date, but The KeyBank Center is hyping an appearance from the Demon King at the March 10th WWE live event from Buffalo, New York.

A return to action over the next month means WWE will have ample time to factor Finn Balor into a top WrestleMania program.

Discussion: Who do you want to see Finn Balor face at WrestleMania?

Kurt Angle Thinks John Cena Is The Greatest Of All Time, Rob Gronkowski To WWE?

Kurt Angle was recently interviewed by Forbes and stated that John Cena will do down as the best of all time.

“John Cena is the man. I don’t know anybody else who has gone 13 years on top…I’m not going to say he’s was greatest athlete in WWE history, but he will go down as the greatest of all time in WWE history.”

Angle also revealed that he would like either Cena, Stone Cold Steve Austin, The Undertaker or Brock Lesnar to induct him into the WWE Hall of Fame this year. You can check out the entire article by clicking here.

Mojo Rawley did an interview with ESPN and was asked about his friend Rob Gronkowski. Rawley revealed that Gronk may wind up in the WWE after he is done playing football.

“Trust me, we’ve been talking about this for years and whenever the time is right and whenever the stars are aligned, I can tell you he will be raring to get over here. He’s fired up doing something with me here at WWE, and I can’t wait to have him. We’ve been dreaming about it for years.”

Significant Jump For TNA Viewership This Week, Impact In 60 Video

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UHYqJc8gb50

This week’s TNA Impact on POP drew 325,000 viewers, a big increase from last week’s 252,000 viewers – which is the low for 2017 so far.

The show featured Eddie Edwards vs. former partner Davey Richards in a Street Fight as the main event, plus The Hardys capturing the Mexican Tag Team Championships in Mexico.

Impact ranked #122 on the cable top 150 list this week after not making the list last week.

Karl Anderson Talks About WWE’s Loaded Roster, Adjusting To WWE Schedule

WWE tag team champion Karl Anderson appeared on the Busted Open radio show earlier this week. Karl discussed his relationship with his partner Luke Gallows,  their first tour of Japan together, coming over to the WWE and tells a great story about Stephanie McMahon commenting on how much oil Gallows has been using. Karl also discussed how he feels they have been booked since coming stateside, how they helped AJ Styles morph into his current character and comments on the comedy sketches they were involved in this year.

Karl went in depth about the transition from working in Japan for New Japan Pro Wrestling to now the grueling road schedule of the WWE. He comments on how even though the travel is more intense, he still gets 2-3 days with his kids a week and that means a lot to him.

Finally, an interesting quote from Karl on AJ Styles, Shinsuke Nakamura and the talent the WWE has been accumulating:

“I’ve been in the ring with Shinsuke. He’s one of my best friends and one of the best, and they’ve got AJ Styles who I feel is the best. It’s so cool what the WWE has done. It started when they hired Sami Zayn and Kevin Owens. And then they brought in Fergal Devitt [Finn Balor] and then the brought in AJ and myself and Shinsuke and Gallows. They’re just racking up all the best performers in the world, its just really cool. If you get a chance to see AJ and Shinsuke Nakamura in a Wrestlemania someday, it doesn’t get any cooler than that. There’s so many great performers in WWE right now, it’s such a cool time to be a part of it.”

Busted Open can be heard weekdays from 2p-4p Eastern Time only on SiriusXM Rush Channel 93 and any time on the SiriusXM App.

Jim Ross Expects Bray Wyatt To Be A Top Babyface In WWE

WWE Hall of Famer Jim Ross discussed Bray Wyatt winning the WWE Championship in his latest blog over at JRsBarBQ.com. JR says that it was a “strategic” move for WWE to put the title on Wyatt and thinks he’s got a bright future as a babyface.

“Wyatt is a significant, character baby face in the making IMO and the fans at the live events in the arenas seem to agree. The entertaining and memorable Fire Fly entrance is pure ‘face and let’s not forget that Wyatt’s grandfather, Blackjack Mulligan was one of the great character ‘faces of all time as was Bray’s mentor Dusty Rhodes.”

Ross credited the Eater of Worlds for working on virtually every aspect of his game. He likes that Bray’s matches vary and feels that he could have been a star in virtually any era.

“Bray has worked hard on his in ring game, promos and his physique and conditioning which is admirable. He hasn’t been afraid to try new material and he doesn’t have the same match every outing on TV as many of his peers often times do. Bray Wyatt is a timeless talent who would be a star in any era that I have been a part of the past 40 years.”

Head over to JRsBarBQ.com to read the full blog.

Discussion: Do you think Bray Wyatt will be a top babyface in the next year? His ‘cult leader’ character lends itself to being more of a heel – what type of villain do you think Bray could play off of as a hero?

AJ Styles Praises John Cena, Another Former WWE Performing Teasing A Return

– In recent weeks there have been reports that WWE is reaching out to former Superstars regarding one of the women’s matches at WrestleMania 33. Earlier this week, Kelly Kelly visited RAW, teased that she’ll be at WrestleMania and might have another run in her. Former WWE Superstar Victoria (Lisa Marie Varon) is another name that’s been discussed regarding a WrestleMania return and a “Snap” from her this week indicates the rumors are correct.

– Sting posted a tweet to promote the mobile game WWE Champions. In the tweet, Sting stated that he can now finally face The Undertaker after not being able to during his career.

Sean Waltman stated on a recent episode of his show X-pac 12360, that he had a conversation recently with AJ Styles. Waltman was backstage during Smackdown this week and according to Waltman, AJ Styles had some very complimentary things to say about Cena.

Styles discussing Cena to Waltman backstage at Smackdown Live

“I was watching your show and I just wanted to tell you what you said about John Cena being the man and the best going, you are one hundred percent correct. Anyone that doesn’t agree with you, it is because they don’t know John Cena and have never been in the ring with him.”

George “The Animal” Steele Passes Away

We are saddened to report that WWE Hall of Famer George “the Animal” Steele has passed away. He was 79 years old. Recent reports had stated George had been moved to hospice care recently due to failing health.

In December of 2015, Steele underwent major kidney surgery that had to be aborted mid-procedure. His family reported that he had flatlined during surgery and had been dealing with health complications since.

Earlier this week Bob Backlund stated on his Facebook page that he had spoke with George’s wife who informed him that George may not be coming home from the hospital. He leaves behind a wife, daughter, and two sons.

A Beloved Character

George “the Animal” Steele began his career as a heel, and recently the WWE Network released a “Hidden Gem” collection which included George battling Bruno Sammartino in a steele cage.

While managed by Captain Lou Albano he was involved in several comedic sketches where Lou attempted to make George smart through electroshock therapy. In the sketches the electroshock therapy worked and George acted and spoke like a scholar for a short period of time. The electroshocks were then taken too far and George faded back into the “Animal”. Eventually fans began to love George and his character evolved into a good guy. Fans would start to cheer as he would rip open turnbuckles and act like a maniac in the ring.

His infatuation with Miss Elizabeth in the buildup to WrestleMania III helped set the stage for the famous Randy Savage vs. Ricky Steamboat match that year. He would later “adopt” a stuffed animal whom he dubbed “Mine.” He was inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame in 1995.

Outpouring of Support

Always a well-liked guy behind the scenes, there has been an outpouring of support following news of his death:

Backstage News On John Cena Putting Over Bray Wyatt On SmackDown

Bray Wyatt defied the odds this past weekend at Elimination Chamber and captured his first WWE Championship. In doing so, he ended John Cena’s historic reign. The 16-time champion had a chance to make history once again on SmackDown Live in a triple threat title match also involving AJ Styles. Unfortunately, he came up short and Wyatt retained by pinning Cena. According to WWE legend Sean “X-Pac” Waltman, John Cena personally insisted on putting Bray Wyatt over on SmackDown.

Waltman was backstage at Tuesday’s SmackDown from Anaheim, California and said:

“I’m not sure what the finish was supposed to be for the match last night. But I know this for a fact, that John Cena insisted on putting Bray Wyatt over again last night, insisted on it. That’s not just a rumor.”

Latest On Kurt Angle Wrestling For WWE Again, Potential Opponents

With Kurt Angle scheduled to be inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame during WrestleMania 33 weekend, there remains a good chance that we could see the Olympic gold medalist back in a WWE ring this year. Angle has stated in numerous interviews that his talks with Triple H thus far have been about the induction, not him wrestling again. During a recent interview with Forbes, Angle shed some light on where things stand:

“I wouldn’t be surprised if I do a few more matches somewhere down the line, but they haven’t talked about it so it’s not official. This Hall of Fame thing is just the beginning, so let’s see how it goes and we’ll go from there.”

“I have a lot to offer in professional wrestling and I really love the sport, I love sports entertainment. It’s been really good to me. I caught on very quickly and I’ve been a great student, now I’ve become a great teacher.”

Since leaving TNA Wrestling, Angle has continued working independant shows. As recently as this past weekend, he competed against Alberto El Patron. In the latest Wrestling Observer Newsletter, Dave Meltzer wrote that WWE is on board with Angle wrestling for them again as long as he can pass their medical exams.

“I don’t know when or how extensively at this point, but the plan right now is that Angle will be doing at least some wrestling in WWE. He would have to pass a physical, and obviously at best it would be very limited”

As for which WWE Superstars he’d like to work with, Angle has a few familiar opponents in mind.

“I’ve had my best matches with AJ and Joe, so it’d be nice to do it on a bigger platform in the WWE so we’ll see what happens,” he said.

Discussion: If Kurt Angle does wrestle for WWE again, name 3 opponents you want to see him work with before he retires for good.

Darren Young To Miss 6 Months After Elbow Surgery

Last month Darren Young suffered an elbow injury during a WWE Main Event taping. Video of the incident showed his elbow hyperextending on the corner of the ring apron. The official diagnosis was a “a traumatic dislocation & fracture of the coronoid process” of his right elbow.

After undergoing surgery in Birmingham, Alabama last week (2/9), the former Prime Time Player is expected to miss 6 months of action. While in Birmingham, Young posted this photo during physical rehabilitation with a familiar face.

Details On The Upcoming Wedding Of Paige & Alberto El Patron

The upcoming wedding between WWE Superstar Paige and Alberto El Patron is tentatively scheduled for this coming May, schedules permitting. Paige proposed to Del Rio in the ring during a wrestling show Puerto Rican last October.

Given El Patron’s rocky relationship with WWE, it will be interesting to see if this wedding airs on Total Divas.

Alberto El Patron continues to wrestle on the independent circuit, competing against Kurt Angle this past weekend at WCPW’s True Destiny event. He serves as the figurehead of the Combate Americas MMA promotion where goes by the name Alberto El Presidente.

Paige has been recovering from neck surgery and is already back in the gym. On social media we’ve seen her training MMA and boxing. She recently told TMZ that she’s considering an MMA career and could make her MMA debut later this year when Combate Americas looks to hold their first pay-per-view-event.

WWE Releasing Official “Book of Rules” (And How to Break Them)

For years there have been many unanswered questions regarding WWE’s official rules. Come February 28th 2017, we might start to get some answers. That’s the date WWE will be releasing their official “Book of Rules”.

Daniel Bryan has written the forward to the book, which is available for pre-order at Amazon.com.

As of yet it is not clear if wrestlers are still required to hold the “tag rope” during tag-team matches.

The Official WWE Book of Rules: (And How to Break Them)

A press release from WWE stated the following:

New York, NY – February 15, 2017 – For the first time ever, WWE is publishing The Official WWE Book of Rules (And How to Break Them). Learn how the biggest WWE Superstars of today such as John Cena, Roman Reigns and The New Day are following in the footsteps of legends like The Undertaker and WWE Hall of Famers Ric Flair and Shawn Michaels to reshape the rules of sports-entertainment.”

“The Official WWE Book of Rules reveals not only the rules of the ring but also the do’s and dont’s of every aspect of WWE Superstardom. Published for the first time, these regulations range from the conventional and competition-based to the eccentric and Superstar-specific. It’s the ultimate companion for any member of the WWE Universe who believes rules were made to be broken.”

WWE SmackDown Viewership For Post-Elimination Chamber Episode

This week’s WWE SmackDown drew 2.626 million viewers, down from last week’s 2.627 million viewers.

The show featured new WWE Champion Bray Wyatt defending against John Cena and AJ Styles, plus more fallout from Elimination Chamber.

SmackDown was #8 in viewership and #2 in the 18-49 demographic on cable for the night.

By comparison, this week’s RAW drew 3.087 million viewers.

Mick Foley Recalls Vince McMahon Yelling At Braun Strowman Backstage

Braun Strowman was recently scolded by Vince McMahon backstage, according to RAW General Manager Mick Foley. During an appearance on Lilian Garcia’s “Making Their Way To The Ring” podcast earlier this week, Foley recalled a recent incident that stemmed from Strowman not abiding by WWE’s patented verbiage.

“I was about to go out there a couple weeks ago, and I heard Braun Strowman say, I want a title shot,” Foley said. “Mr. McMahon’s behind the curtain, at the board watching the monitor, and he goes, oh god, it’s not a title shot. I was thinking to myself, then what is it?”

Foley said that’s exactly what he’d call it: a title shot. “You want a title shot? He’s like, it’s a title MATCH. It’s a match! So if you ever wonder what it’s like to see a six-foot-eight, three hundred pound behemoth get chewed out, you should’ve been there.”

Based on his current push, it looks like Strowman is probably in line for more Universal title belt strap Championship shots opportunities.

Live Report From WCPW True Destiny: Angle vs. Patron

SEScoops correspondent Michael Hogan was in attendance for WCPW’s True Destiny show from this past weekend. Here’s his report:

As I said previously, WhatCulture’s cards have always intrigued me. And while they have brought over big ex-WWE names and put them in prominent spots, like they did here, their World Title picture has always been built around UK guys. They’ve also given old and new British names such as Johnny Moss, Liam Slater and Gabriel Kidd a promotion to call home, and for that they do deserve credit.

On paper, this card had something for everyone, and all the ingredients to deliver a good show. The show opened with a match that has been travelling the globe now, and seeing these two on a poster or a card is almost a guaranteed sell out at this point – Will Ospreay vs Ricochet. A special mention has to go to Ospreay, who having landed back from Japan at 9pm the prior evening after a war against Shibata for NJPW, went and competed twice on this show. The man himself has said he is nursing some wear and tear, but he’ll be damned if he’s not going to try and steal every show he is on.

If you haven’t heard by now, pretty early on into this match the top rope broke. You could feel the trepidation from some sections of the audience, wondering if this match could live up to the ones preceding it without the catalyst for some of their flashy spots. Personally, I think this created something new and unlike what we’d seen from these 2, and was a testament to their professionalism. They carried on for about another 10 minutes, and if they were thrown, you couldn’t tell. Big audibles must have been called in the ring, but the action and speed did not stop. After some inventive 2nd rope spots, Ricochet picked up the win and WCPW was getting me on board.

Second was Primate vs Rampage in an I Quit match. This was the 5th in a Best of 7 series, and one I imagine will conclude when WCPW make their American debut over WrestleMania weekend. Rampage I was very familiar with from his work in PROGRESS as their first Atlas Champion, and having possibly the best entrance on the indies right now. Before WCPW began their shows, I didn’t know at all who Primate was but he has an intimidating look and a smashmouth style that gels well with Rampage.

This match didn’t quite live up to what I thought it would be. While WCPW isn’t an adult promotion by any means, I thought being on iPPV may have let them take the reigns off of these 2 a bit. They did, however, beat seven shades out of one another, and with a likely 2 further matches in this series, it makes sense to not show their hand entirely as of yet. Both of these guys seem like the type that would be signed by classic Vince McMahon in a heartbeat, but as is common in wrestling today; they are no slouches either. Rampage picked up the win by duct taping Primate in the corner and attacking him with a chain.

One thing I will say is that I was glad it was not a Last Man Standing match. Tye Dillinger may have secured himself a job for life with his Perfect 10 gimmick, and when he is on screen it is perfectly understandable to hear that ring around an arena. But the 10 chant was here all night and it was not going away. I don’t like to seem like the grouchy old man telling people what to chant, but this seemed a little excessive and pointless and the crowd did live up to some of my preconceptions.

Unfortunately, due to a family emergency, Penta el Zero M was unable to make it to True Destiny. The former Pentagon Jr is booked a lot in the UK over the coming months, including the aforementioned Pro Wrestling World Cup; so there will be another chance to see him, but people were disappointed after that. Instead, Alberto el Patron’s brother, the aptly named El Hijo de Dos Caras was his replacement to add a lucha flair to the evening.

I aim to be an optimistic wrestling fan. I’ve watched enough to know it’s never going to be amazing all the time, but as long as you’re entertained, that is the main thing. Unfortunately, this was not really anything to write home about. I don’t know if it was because they had a short amount of time to prepare, but after Ospreay & Ricochet’s improvisation earlier in the night that almost doesn’t seem like a fair reason. The crowd were expecting more, and it just wasn’t a great match to see. Drago got the expected win.

Zack Sabre Jr is a man who has been leading the way for British wrestling overseas. His tours with NOAH, followed by a return to the independents and sterling showings in EVOLVE and PWG, where he has held their World Championship for almost a year, have seen him become almost an icon of modern British wrestling. And in between that, he has held the Revolution Pro British Heavyweight Championship and had fantastic bouts for them and PROGRESS over the last 18 months.

Travis Banks arrived in the UK from New Zealand at the end of 2015 and has seen his reputation grow exponentially in the year he has been here. An undefeated tag team run in PROGRESS as part of the South Pacific Power Trip with TK Cooper along with Dahlia Black, and a star-making turn in Fight Club: Pro, culminating in winning their Infinity tournament over WWE UK tournament favourite Trent Seven has caused his demand to skyrocket, recently debuting for Rev Pro himself, along with Germany’s wXw.

I had been at their first contest back in Fight Club: Pro that Zack had won, and saw their first WCPW match at Lights Out in which Banks tied the score to set the stage for this rematch. Differing from the fast paced, more spot heavy first contests; this was a technical exhibition full of gruesome submissions and hard strikes. Zack’s time in Japan along with Banks’ strong style combined to make a refreshing change of pace to anything on the show before it, and the crowd seemed invested heavily.

While the crowd did seem to favour the eventual winner Sabre Jr to begin the match, Banks had the crowd at an even split at the end, and received a great ovation at the end of a fantastic wrestling match after Zack had left. Both men are prime examples of WCPW not only using a more established name on the world scene like Zack to help another guy, but also showcasing talent that is working week in, week out in the UK scene like Banks, to bring more people to those shows, and their own.

As stated above, Will Ospreay is determined to steal every show he is on. Not satisfied with his match with Ricochet earlier on, he and Swords of Essex partner Scotty Wainwright captured the WCPW Tag Team Titles in a 4 team ladder invitational also featuring former champs Johnny Moss & Liam Slater but the team of Prospect (Archer & Gracie) and El Ligero & Gabriel Kidd. While Angle & el Patron may have arguably brought the crowd in, this was another example of UK guys getting a spotlight.

It was a 4 team ladder match, and so you can expect how it went down. Johnny Moss, who looks like a strongman ate another strongman, was pulling out dives and planchas you would not believe. Relative youngsters like Kidd, Slater and Prospect did not look out of place here and all got spots to shine. Even Kidd’s ally Prince Ameen got a memorable comedy spot, if not slightly odd with the use of a magic carpet and a certain Disney theme tune.

Some of the action was difficult to keep up with, and with the event picking up pace, the 8 men did great to not let the crowd simmer down. The finish came with Ospreay hitting an Oscutter from the top of a huge ladder onto Kidd, further cementing the fact that the man will die for a crowd. However, Ospreay was a replacement for the third Sword of Essex, Paul Robinson, who was not at the show, so it will be interesting to see how WCPW handle this with Ospreay’s burdgeoning schedule.

There was another change to the announced card, as Tessa Blanchard was unable to make the show. Her replacement, Nixon Newell though was great to see. Unfortunately, Paige just happened to take her seat at this point which large portions of the crowd made a lot of noise for, but thankfully that quietened down. If you’ve not seen Newell before, she is one of the best babyfaces in the UK at the moment, regardless of gender. It’s rumoured heavily Nixon is getting ready to head to NXT, and with the women’s roster they are building, you can easily see where she would fit in there.

Bea Priestley has improved a great deal since arriving in the UK, another New Zealander who has came over a la Travis Banks. Unfortunately, she still seems to get a some hate from small sections of fans, seemingly over her public relationship with Will Ospreay but with how she has grown into a genuine heel in various promotions, WCPW included, people should be seeing her for more than that. Nixon went over and reclaimed her WCPW Women’s Title that Bea had stolen from her, and the crowd were energetic before the 2 main events.

Drew Galloway successfully defended his WCPW World Championship over Joe Hendry in a decent semi main event. It felt a little short, and while all matches on the card got a decent amount of time, it’s the World Championship, and I felt this one could have gone another 5 minutes. I can see how this will be something to fuel the fires of controversy also, as however you put it, the 2 British guys in the big title match were second to the imports. At least at this point in the show. I don’t want to gloss over this match, because neither man deserve that. Drew Galloway is continuing to hone his craft, and it’s surely a matter of when, not if, he goes back to WWE. Joe Hendry looked good too, but his big moment would come later in the last match of the show.

I saw Kurt Angle face Zack Sabre Jr for Rev Pro last Summer and left with a bit of a sour taste in my mouth. Hearing “Medal” again was fantastic, and the crowd in York Hall was electric, but it wasn’t the match I thought it would be. Thus, I came into this match, billed as his last match in the UK with tempered expectations. I’m not sure if that is the reason why, but Kurt and Alberto put on a hell of a main event for my money.

The crowd, for all of their detractions and ten chants, were electric for this, buying into every near fall and creating a genuine big match atmosphere. It being his last independent match, of course Angle went over; but this was so much better than I thought it could be, I was swept up in the spectacle and it rightfully got the biggest ovation of the night. Some may have said Angle should have put over a young talent in his final match, but instead he saved it for afterwards.

Joe Hendry came back to the ring, a man who squared off against Angle in his first WCPW appearance. Hendry cut a promo giving Kurt rightful props, and just when the crowd were about to break into a “Thank you Angle” chant, Hendry stuck him with the low blow. In wrestling tradition, Angle went out on his back, and WCPW look like they have a top, homegrown heel to move forward with. Quite when that forward movement will happen is up in the air, as the company have recently announced their weekly show is going on hiatus. This is a shame, as this was a good angle to finish the show, and a heel Joe Hendry is not something any other UK promotion is doing right now, and gives the talented Scotsman a chance to flourish in other ways.

So, overall, what did I make of it? Honestly, the day was a hugely pleasant surprise. I came in trepidatious and left with a changed perception of the organisation as a whole. The level of professionalism from top the bottom really took me back. I think the part that exemplified this the most was in between the press conference and show. After the fan convention had died down, the main YouTube personalities, who moments ago had been signing autographs, were setting up chairs and preparing the arena. I didn’t expect that amount of hands on work by people I thought were there mainly to promote the show.

I don’t think I’ll end up a regular at WCPW, however. I like the gritty, underground, slightly less polished organisations like PROGRESS personally, but what is fascinating is now how there is so much choice for the British fan. For a collective of peninsulas that could fit into Texas god knows how many times over, there really is something to appease every palette of wrestling fan. The resurgence of British wrestling has not been an overnight process, but because of how the scene is set up at the moment, it allows companies like WCPW to hit the ground running and provide something for fans who may only watch WWE, and allow them to safely dip a toe into the water of the independent scene.

The ambition for the Pro Wrestling World Cup, along with constantly bringing in new guys (for instance The Young Bucks debut in March) makes me think WCPW won’t be going away, at least not any time soon. The haters I’m sure will be waiting with baited breath but do I think it deserves all the hate? Absolutely not. If it’s not your cup of tea, go and support the company you feel is more suited to you, and enjoy the fact the British scene is back on top once more.
