Kevin Owens On Working With AJ Styles and Potential WrestleMania Opponents

Kevin Owens recently sat down with local southern New Jersey media outlet, “At the Shore”, and spoke on a variety of subjects.

In true Owens style, he stayed in character for the majority of the interview, even when the reporter asks him non-kayfabe questions.

Kevin Owens Interview Highlights

When asked how much he enjoys working with AJ Styles:

“Yeah, I don’t enjoy it at all actually. I’d rather never having to work with him again. He has my title, and I have to go after and it looks like we’re nowhere near done. Unfortunately, I have to step in the ring with him several more times. It’s part of what we do.”

On WWE House Shows:

“When I was a kid and went to shows, my favorites were Live Events,” Owens says. “You really see a performer’s personality on Live Events than on TV. I know sometimes people think Raw or SmackDown or the pay per views are the shows to go to. Whenever WWE is in town it’s a great time. But Live Events are special. If you’ve never been to one I highly recommend it.”

On who he would like to face in the main event of WrestleMania:

“I feel like Sami Zayn. It would be such a great chapter to add to our story. We’ve been at each other’s throats and by each other’s sides simultaneously the last 15 years. It would be great to do something with him.

And also Finn Balor, who is my best friend. We got to the WWE the exact same time and didn’t know each other before hand. We had a bit of contact here and there before because we knew we both would spend time there. We bonded over that. Once we got to Orlando we’ve became very close quickly and getting to main event with him would be incredible. It would be another incredible chapter to our story. We both kind of dove in to uncharted territories, him from Japan and me from other places. We both did well for ourselves. To get to achieve that was very special.”

When asked to say one nice thing about Sami Zayn:

“Hmmm … well … I will say this. He’s really intent on changing the world for the better, and I do respect that about him. Pretty soon he’s going to be a big part in bringing help to those who need it. I respect that. But he gets in my way in the ring and I have to deal with him accordingly.”

WWE Battleground 2017 Preview & Predictions

WWE Battleground 2017 airs this Sunday from the Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia. It is the final WWE PPV before SummerSlam on August 20th.

Kickoff Show:

Breezango is supposedly going to crack the case and the Superstars that have been torturing them during recent episodes of Fashion Files are going to be revealed. I honestly have zero clue who will be revealed as the attackers but I am looking forward to finding out.

Aiden English vs Tye Dillinger

English and Dillinger faced off back in May at WWE Backlash. That match was also on the Kickoff Show. Tye Dillinger picked up the victory at Backlash and I would assume he will do the same Sunday night.

Predicted Winner: Tye Dillinger

Main Card:

Baron Corbin vs Shinsuke Nakamura

Baron Corbin and Shinsuke Nakamura have been at each other’s throats for a few week’s now. Shinsuke Nakamura claimed that Corbin was afraid of him, which then caused Corbin to attack Nakamura backstage the following week.

On July 11th, Shinsuke Nakamura was scheduled to have a match with Baron Corbin. However, the match never started because Nakamura attacked Corbin before the match started.

On Tuesday’s episode of SmackDown, Nakamura teamed up with AJ Styles to take on Baron Corbin and Kevin Owens. Corbin tried to get revenge on Nakamura and attack him while he was making his entrance. Nakamura was ready for it and a brawl broke out with the four Superstars in the match. The match ended with Corbin and Kevin Owens getting the last laugh and emerging victorious.

Corbin won the Money in the Bank briefcase at last months PPV and that guarantees him a shot at the WWE Championship in the future. Shinsuke Nakamura warned AJ Styles before their match on Tuesday that he was coming for his United States Championship. Both Corbin and Nakamura have bright futures in WWE. I think Corbin will pick up the victory at Battleground, but will cheat to do so.

Predicted Winner: Baron Corbin

Sami Zayn vs Mike Kanellis

This feud all started when Sami Zayn interrupted Mike and Maria Kanellis having a love-fest backstage. Sami Zayn continued to accidentally interrupt the Kanellis’ romantic moments and finally Mike and Maria had enough. Maria slapped Sami in the face and Mike followed it up by smashing a glass vase over Zayn’s head on the July 11th episode of SmackDown.

On Tuesday’s episode of SmackDown, Mike Kanellis made his WWE in-ring debut against Sami Zayn. Sami controlled the entire match and had Kanellis set up for the Helluva Kick in the corner. Maria got into the ring and stood in front of the love of her life. Sami became frustrated and started yelling at the referee to get Maria out of the ring. Mike Kanellis then punched Sami in the face and planted him with a Samoan Driver for the pinfall victory.

I see things playing out in a similar fashion this Sunday at Battleground. Sami Zayn will have the match won, but outside interference from Maria Kanallis will once again cost him a victory.

Predicted Winner: Mike Kanellis

SmackDown Tag Team Championship Match: The Usos (c) vs New Day

The Usos defended their titles against New Day at the Money in the Bank PPV last month. It was a back and forth match, but The Usos took the cowardly out and purposefully got counted out to retain their titles. Things then got personal during a rap battle on SmackDown. The Usos referenced a private video featuring Paige and Xavier Woods being leaked during the battle.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a_oNiA19qX8

On the July 11th episode of SmackDown, Xavier Woods picked up a victory over Jey Uso. New Day seemed to have all of the momentum heading into their rematch for the titles at WWE Battleground this Sunday.

However, The Usos responded with a big victory on this past Tuesday’s episode of SmackDown. Jimmy Uso defeated Kofi Kingston after Jey Uso provided a distraction on the ring apron. Kofi hesitated for a moment and then connected with a Crossbody off the top rope on Jimmy Uso in the ring. Jimmy Uso was able to roll through the move and wound up pinning Kofi for the victory.

This is one of those matches where I could see either team winning. Truth be told, I would be perfectly fine as either New Day or The Usos as SmackDown Tag Team Champions. I’ve enjoyed The Usos work as heels, but I think the time has come for New Day to be the champs again.

Predicted Winners & New SmackDown Tag Team Champions: New Day

Flag Match: John Cena vs Rusev

John Cena made his WWE return on the July 4th episode of SmackDown. He was in the middle of cutting a promo about America’s greatness when he was rudely interrupted by Rusev, who happened to also be making his long-awaited WWE return. Cena wound up challenging Rusev to a Flag Match that night, but Rusev declined.

On the July 11th episode of SmackDown, Cena teamed up with AJ Styles to face Rusev and Kevin Owens. Cena got the better of Rusev during the match and wound up pinning Kevin Owens after an Attitude Adjustment to earn a victory for his team.

During this past week’s episode of SmackDown, Cena cut an impassioned promo about Sunday’s Flag Match against Rusev. Both the American flag and the Bulgarian flag were hanging above the turnbuckles. After Cena was done with his promo, Rusev attacked him from behind. Rusev locked Cena in the Accolade and though Cena tried his best to break the hold, he ultimately was unable to do so. Rusev left Cena laying in the ring and celebrated with the Bulgarian flag on the entrance ramp.

Rusev may have captured the momentum on Tuesday’s episode of SmackDown, but I think Cena will be the one who emerges victorious at WWE Battleground. SummerSlam is just around the corner and I’m sure Cena will be a major factor on that PPV.

Predicted Winner: John Cena

United States Championship Match: AJ Styles (c) vs Kevin Owens

Kevin Owens had his title of “The New Face of America” snatched away from him when AJ Styles won the United States Championship at a WWE Live Event at Madison Square Garden on July 7th.

As noted earlier, Styles and John Cena teamed up to defeat Kevin Owens and Rusev on the July 11th episode on SmackDown. Owens got some revenge on Tuesday’s episode of SmackDown, when he teamed up with Baron Corbin to defeat Styles and Nakamura. Owens actually pinned the United States Champion after a Pop-Up Powerbomb.

I don’t envision AJ Styles dropping the United States Championship so quickly after winning it. Styles has hinted at bring back the US Open Challenge and defending the title weekly on Tuesday nights. I’d like to see Styles retain the title and for the US Open Challenge to return starting next week on SmackDown.

Predicted Winner & Still United States Champion: AJ Styles

Fatal 5-Way Elimination Match To Determine The #1 Contender For The SmackDown Women’s Championship: Tamina vs Becky Lynch vs Charlotte vs Lana vs Natalya

This match is supposed to be every woman for themselves, but Tamina and Lana seem to have bonded over the past few weeks. Lana lost three matches to SmackDown Women’s Champion Naomi in a row after debuting on the SmackDown roster. Charlotte, Becky and Natalya have all questioned whether Lana should be a part of this match and Tamina has come to her defense every time. On the July 11th episode of SmackDown, Lana came down to the ring during a tag match between Charlotte & Becky Lynch versus Natalya & Tamina. Lana distracted Charlotte and Tamina used it to her advantage and booted Charlotte in the face for the victory.

On Tuesday’s episode of SmackDown, the five Superstars in this match all had argument in front of SmackDown commissioner Shane McMahon. Tamina once again came to Lana’s defense and told her to shut up. Natalya then suggested to Shane McMahon that Becky Lynch and Charlotte have a match tonight. Charlotte then pissed Becky Lynch off because she claimed that it would be an uncompetitive match due to Charlotte’s previous victories over Lynch. The two started arguing and Shane McMahon made the match official. Becky Lynch wound up winning the match and the two Superstars shook hands after it was over.

Natalya, Tamina and Lana then attacked Becky and Charlotte. Tamina and Lana came down to the ring together. Natalya tried to lock Tamina in the Sharpshooter but Lana attacked her from behind. Tamina then leveled Natalya with a kick and exited the ring. SmackDown Women’s Champion Naomi stated on Tuesday’s SmackDown that she will be the first person in the ring to congratulate the new #1 contender at Battleground. Carmella interrupted Naomi with the MITB briefcase and told Naomi to watch her back at Sunday’s PPV.

In my opinion, the Superstar that makes the most sense to win this match is Becky Lynch. I’m solely basing that off of the interactions Lynch has had with Carmella and James Ellsworth. I’m assuming that Carmella will cash in the briefcase before SummerSlam and then enter a feud with Becky Lynch as she will be the #1 contender. Another interesting option would be Tamina. We haven’t learned much about her on-screen character since she made her return after WWE’s Superstar Shake-Up. Her relationship with Lana is puzzling and maybe we will know more about their friendship following Battleground and the weeks heading up to SummerSlam.

Predicted Winner & #1 Contender For The SmackDown Women’s Championship: Becky Lynch

WWE Championship Punjabi Prison Match: Jinder Mahal (c) vs Randy Orton

The feud between Randy Orton and Jinder Mahal has been going on for months. Mahal has already defeated Orton twice, once to capture the WWE Championship and then he successfully defended it at WWE Money in the Bank. During their match at Money in the Bank, Randy Orton’s father Cowboy Bob Orton was seated in the front row. The Singh Brothers put their hands on him and it caused Orton to lose his mind in front of his hometown crowd. Mahal capitalized on Orton losing focus and retained his WWE Championship.

Orton then proceeded to hold SmackDown hostage until he was granted another rematch for the WWE Championship. Randy set up a chair in the ring and demanded that either Shane McMahon or Daniel Bryan make the match. Orton also threatened to RKO Mahal’s entire family in response to the Singh Brothers putting their hands on his father. SmackDown commissioner Shane McMahon eventually caved in and granted Orton the match, but stated that Jinder Mahal got to choose the stipulation for the match. WWE Champion Jinder Mahal then came down to the entrance ramp and announced that it would be a Punjabi Prison match, in honor of his idol the Great Khali.

Mahal cut a promo on Randy Orton the following week on the July 4th episode of SmackDown. During the promo, Mahal insulted America and claimed that he had 1.3 billion people behind him in India. Mahal also stated that Americans do not like him because he looks different and sounds different. Mahal vowed to beat tolerance into those fans who disrespect him because of the color of his skin. Orton then interrupted and said that the WWE Universe doesn’t dislike him because he looks different, it is because he is a jackass.

On the July 11th episode of SmackDown, Randy Orton was away filming the upcoming WWE Studios film “Changeland”. Mahal had a match against Tye Dillinger and easily defeated him. After the match, Mahal cut another promo on Americans and Randy Orton. Mahal referred to Orton as a “snake” and scolded the fans for cheering for him. The fans responded by chanting “USA!”. Mahal claimed that the 1.3 billion people in India know that Jinder Mahal is the greatest WWE Champion of all time.

Randy Orton returned to SmackDown this Tuesday and interrupted Jinder Mahal while he was cutting a promo along with the Singh Brothers inside the Punjabi Prison structure. Orton said that Mahal had everything to lose as the 50th WWE Champion. Randy asked Mahal how he was going to feel after the 1.3 billion people in India realize that he is a disgrace after he loses the WWE Championship at Battleground. Orton then climbed to the top of the Punjabi Prison and vowed to leave Mahal’s “jacked up ass for dead in that ring” at WWE Battleground this Sunday.

This feud will likely come to an end this Sunday at the PPV. I just cannot see Randy Orton defeating Mahal in a Punjabi Prison match. I fully expect the Singh Brothers to somehow find their way into the structure and have a major impact on this match. Mahal will carry the WWE Championship until SummerSlam, I don’t see his title reign lasting any longer than that.

Predicted Winner & Still WWE Champion: Jinder Mahal

UFC Official Says Reports Of Brock Lesnar Re-Entering USADA Testing Pool For MMA Return Are False

There was a ton of speculation yesterday regarding Brock Lesnar re-entering the USADA drug-testing pool. The rumor originally started by the @TalkMMA Twitter page that has been correct about MMA news in the past. Here are the original comments by TalkMMA that started the speculation of Brock Lesnar possibly returning to the UFC:

“Paul Heyman and Brock were at the UFC HQ during (International Fight Week), had a meeting with the UFC brass. Brock’s return is eminent. Most likely at MSG on Nov. 4. I just had a second person tell me that Brock Lesnar is back in the USADA testing pool. Rumor around WWE is Brock is dropping the belt at (SummerSlam).”

Pro Wrestling Sheet then stated that they spoke to sources that confirmed that Lesnar is re-entering the USADA drug-testing pool for MMA. Pro Wrestling Sheet reported that Lesnar was re-entering the drug-testing pool in order to prepare for when his WWE contract expires after WrestleMania 34.

Jeff Novitzky, who serves as UFC’s Vice President of Athlete Heath and Performance, spoke to MMAJunkie and refuted those claims. Here is what Novitzky told MMAJunkie:

“(Lesnar) is not currently enrolled in the USADA testing pool, nor has there been any inquiry on his part to do so,” Novitzky said.

Brock Lesnar’s last UFC fight took place at UFC 200. Lesnar defeated Mark Hunt by unanimous decision. Lesnar then tested positive for the banned estrogen blocker clomiphene and was subsequently suspended for one year by USADA. Lesnar’s victory over Hunt was then reversed and ruled a no contest. Lesnar then retired from UFC, and as a result of that his suspension was frozen. If Lesnar were to re-enter the USADA drug-testing pool, he would still have five months left of his suspension to serve.

Rematch Added To WWE Battleground, Updated PPV Card

WWE just announced that Sami Zayn vs. Mike Kanellis is official for Sunday’s WWE Battleground PPV. Sami Zayn has been an annoyance for Mike and Maria Kanellis on recent episodes of SmackDown. Sami kept accidentally interrupting Mike and Maria as they were showing affection for each other. Zayn apologized but Mike and Maria were still annoyed. Maria then went looking for Sami on the July 11th episode of SmackDown. Eventually, Sami found Mike and Maria backstage and Maria slapped him in the face. Mike Kanellis then smashed a glass vase over the back of Sami’s head.

On last night’s episode of SmackDown, Mike Kanellis made his WWE in-ring debut in a match against Sami Zayn. Sami pretty much controlled the entire match and had Kanellis set up for the Helluva Kick. Maria got into the ring and stood in front of Mike. As the referee was telling Maria to get out of the ring, Mike punched Zayn in the face and hit the Samoan Driver for the victory. Sami Zayn will now look to get his revenge Sunday night at WWE Battleground.

Sasha Banks On Her Main Goal In WWE, Women’s Division, Praising Two NXT Superstars

Sasha Banks recently spoke with News.com.au and below are some highlights from the interview:

Watching the WWE Women’s Division growing up:

“It’s changed so much. I remember watching it as a kid and the women weren’t really featured like the guys. I was like no, I want to be in the WWE, but I don’t want to do what they’re doing at the moment. I kind of caught like the MTV era, ladies in bikinis and beautiful women, not really throwing it down like the guys. I told myself when I was ten that I wanted to change what it meant to be a diva in the WWE. It’s crazy that we’re here, we’re superstars, we’re not divas anymore. It’s changed so much, I thank the women that came before me and who I work with today, we’ve done it together, we’re changing the world right now.”

Topping this year:

“I don’t know how you top it, I think you just keep getting better and keep striving. Just to make it a normal thing that people are not surprised women are doing these matches. I think the next goal is to main event a WrestleMania.”

Peyton Royce and Billie Kay’s potential:

“I think they are the future. They are incredible and have such passion for this business and I love watching them. They are amazing and Peyton Royce reminds me a lot of myself. Her favorite wrestler is Eddie Guerrero too and I love watching her. She’s incredible, incredible, incredible in the ring and I can’t wait for her to get called up to the main roster.”

WWE hypes next week’s RAW

Several matches were set up for next week’s RAW on Monday night. Sasha Banks and Bayley approached RAW GM Kurt Angle backstage and both said that they deserve a shot at Alexa Bliss’ RAW Women’s Championship. Bayley stated that she has defeated Alexa Bliss twice recently and Sasha Banks noted that Bliss got herself counted out to retain the title against her at WWE Great Balls of Fire. Kurt Angle then made a match for next Monday between Banks and Bayley to determine who will face Alexa Bliss at SummerSlam for the RAW Women’s Championship.

Finn Balor faced Elias Samson on Monday night and was looking like he was going to be victorious. The action spilled outside the ring while Balor was in control and Elias Samson grabbed his guitar and bashed Balor in the head with it. The strike was so brutal that he busted Balor’s head open. On next week’s episode of RAW, Balor will look to get his revenge in a No DQ match against Samson.

Dean Ambrose and Seth Rollins kicked off Monday’s RAW. Ambrose still doesn’t fully trust Rollins as a result of him turning his back on The Shield. Rollins asked Ambrose to get it over with and begged Ambrose to hit him with a chair. Ambrose refused and threw the chair out of the ring. The Miztourage then came down to the ring and beat the hell out of both Rollins and Ambrose with chairs. Later in the show, Ambrose and Rollins had a conversation with RAW GM Kurt Angle backstage. Angle said that they could face any two members of The Miztourage on next week’s RAW. Ambrose said that they wanted to face all three and Angle made the match official. It will be Ambrose & Rollins against The Miz, Bo Dallas & Curtis Axel next week on RAW.

Below is the video promo that WWE has released for next week’s episode of RAW.

Update On Lesnar UFC Return Rumors, When His WWE Contract Is Up

Earlier today there was a rumor that Brock Lesnar is re-entering the USADA drug testing pool, which then lead to a bunch of speculation as to if Brock Lesnar was considering returning to UFC for another fight. The original rumor came from the @TalkMMA Twitter account, which is known for providing some insider information. Here are what his sources told him:

“Paul Heyman and Brock were at the UFC HQ during (International Fight Week), had a meeting with the UFC brass. Brock’s return is eminent. Most likely at MSG on Nov. 4. I just had a second person tell me that Brock Lesnar is back in the USADA testing pool. Rumor around WWE is Brock is dropping the belt at (SummerSlam).”

Pro Wrestling Sheet confirmed that Brock Lesnar is re-entering the USADA testing pool for MMA. However, it is not because he is planning for a fight at Madison Square Garden this year. Brock Lesnar’s WWE contract expires shortly after WrestleMania 34 and he has apparently already made it known to backstage officials that he currently does not intend to re-sign with WWE.

Lesnar has re-entered the testing pool so that when his WWE contract is up, he can make the best decision for his career, which could be a return to MMA. Lesnar has to re-enter the testing pool and fulfill the rest of his suspension before he is allowed to compete in UFC again. Lesnar defeated Mark Hunt at UFC 200, but was subsequently suspended for one year due to failed drug tests. Lesnar’s suspension was frozen back in mid-February, so he still has 5 months left of the suspension to serve.

The press seemed unaware of who Shane is.

To say the Scottish Superstar has b

2. Ruby Riot vs. Ember Moon

  • Asuka has stated she won’t be returning to NXT until there is a worthy challenge. Although Asuka has defended the title against Moon successfully, she did use some under-handed tactics to get the job done. Something we hadn’t seen from Asuka up until that point.
  • Ruby Riot however, has never had a singles match for the championship, if she can beat Ember Moon tonight she just might be given that chance.
  • From WWE.com:
“With NXT Women’s Champion Asuka making it clear on social media that she is waiting for a challenger that is deserving of her time to step up, two Superstars have made their intentions known. Now that Ember Moon has fully recovered from a shoulder injury caused by The Empress of Tomorrow, she wasted no time picking up w

  • The first fall was all grappling based.
  • Ali pinned Gulak’s shoulder’s to the mat with a pinning combination to get the first fall
  • Mustafa Ali 1 – Drew Gulak 0
  • Gulak was visibly upset after the first fall and came out more aggressive for the second.
  • After Ali made a comeback however, he started to go for dropkicks and similar non-grappling moves.
  • Gulak then trapped Ali in a dragon sleeper and got the tap.
  • Ali 1 – Gulak 1
  • Gulak held onto the hold after the tap and continued to take the advantage to start the 3rd fall.
  • During this fall, Gulak was able to counter some of Ali’s more high-flying moves.
  • Ali answered back with a reverse hurricanrana and a diving somersault senton to the floor.

  • Gulak became frustrated that he couldn’t keep Ali down.

  • Ali then hit the inverted 450 splash and got the pin.

Winner: Mustafa Ali

2. The Brian Kendrick vs. Devin Bennett

  • This was a showcase match for Kendrick who is currently feuding with Jack Gallagher.
  • Kendrick was upset to learn before the match that Bennett is from Manchester, just as Gallagher is.
  • During the match Kendrick repeatedly screamed at Bennett “are you a clown?” in reference to his feedings about Gallagher.
  • Kendrick booted him in the face and locked in the Captain’s Hook for the submission victory.

Winner: The Brian Kendrick

3. Akira Tozawa vs. Ariya Daivari

  • Tozawa came into this one with a shoulder injury, the result of his match on Raw. Titus O’Neil ended that match by throwing in the towel on behalf of his client.
  • Daivari dedicated the match to Olympic Gold Medalist Emam-Ali Habibi from Iran. Some are speculating the WWE has reached out to Habibi.
  • Tozawa picked up the win via pinning combination after Daivari had worked his shoulder most of the match.
  • After the match, Daivari threw Tozawa shoulder first into the ring post, potentially making his injury worse.

Winner: Akira Tozawa

Johnny Mundo Taking Shots at Vampiro Over Taya/AAA Situation

Meanwhile in AAA…

Up until recently, Johnny Mundo and Taya Valkyrie held all the major titles for AAA in Mexico.

Mundo won the company’s triple crown (all at the same time) in March at the Rey de Reyes 2017 show. Taya Valkyrie had been the company’s Reina de Reinas champion for the most part since June of 2014.

Recently, Sexy Star returned to the company and won a multi-person match that was for the “vacated” Reina de Reinas championship. The storyline was that Taya used an illegal choke to regain her championship earlier in the year, so the title was vacated.

Vampiro is the Director of Talent for AAA. Evidently he did not discuss plans to bring Sexy Star back to the company with either Mundo or Taya. Neither Mundo or Taya knew she would be winning the Reina de Reinas title either.

Mundo Takes Shots at Vampiro

Keep in mind the communication here is from a company’s world champion to their booker:

Vampiro had posted a series of long tweets in regard to the situation which have since been deleted. In the posts he referred to Taya as a “mark” and that he was building an angle between Sexy Star and Taya. Vampiro did admit to never filling Taya in about the angle however.

Taya has stated she won’t be returning to the company. Ricochet, who has had issues with Lucha Underground, can be found in the comments section generally siding with Mundo and Taya but for the most part just cracking jokes. What AAA will do about their triple crown champion and his intense dislike for Vampirio remains unclear.

Karen Jarrett Teases Potential Free Agent Signing; Posts Photo with Rey Mysterio

Rey Mysterio Jr. is expected t become a free agent this fall after season 3 of Lucha Underground finishes airing on the El Rey Network. Mysterio would then have to complete a 90 day no-compete clause before he could wrestle for another promotion with a television deal.

GFW and WWE are said to both be interested, but Karen Jarrett seems to be teasing that her promotion is the one that will land the popular 42 year-old luchador.

She posted the following earlier:

https://www.instagram.com/p/BWtToiaDEDX/?hl=en

Rey Mysterio to GFW

Global Force Wrestling has had two public relations nightmares since the Jarrett’s regained control over the company. Between fans feeling the company is preventing the Hardys from using the Broken gimmick in WWE, and Alberto El Patron’s recent actions, GFW has come under some hard luck lately.

Rey Mysterio is a proven draw, and with the loss of El Patron, that is something GFW needs. The company is most likely looking for any big splash they can make right now.

Preview for Night 2 of New Japan’s G1 Climax Tournament

New Japan Pro Wrestling’s annual G1 Climax tournament began this week with some incredible A Block action, including standout performances from Zack Sabre Jr and Kota Ibushi.

The B Block of the tournament begins tomorrow and will feature the following bouts:

  • Minoru Suzuki vs. Kenny Omega – The leaders of Suzuki-Gun and Bullet Club/The Elite will face off in what will likely be the main event of the show. Kenny Omega will be looking to get his tournament off to a flying start after his win at last year’s G1. Minoru Suzuki is a legend in the Japanese scene and will be a unique test for Kenny stylistically. I’m going with Suzuki for this one as New Japan like to throw in the odd upset early on it the tournament.

  • SANADA vs. EVIL – Los Ingobernables collide! These two members of arguably New Japan’s most popular faction will look to start their tournaments with a win, I’m expecting an EVIL victory here.

  • Kazuchika Okada vs. Toru Yano – The IWGP World Heavyweight Champion Kazuchika Okada will start this year’s G1 with a match against comedy figure Toru Yano. Yano has been a mainstay for years in the G1 and is sometimes a welcome break from the intense nature of the hard hitting tournament. I’m expecting an Okada win but would not be shocked if New Japan go for the upset.

  • Michael Elgin vs. Tama Tonga – Michael Elgin has gone from strength to strength in New Japan over the past year. His performances against the likes of Kenny Omega and Hiroshi Tanahashi has seen him become a firm favourite in the eyes of the New Japan faithful, I am definitely expecting him to take the win here.

  • Satoshi Kojima vs. Juice Robinson – Juice Robinson is another man who has been impressive over the last calendar year. His transition to the Japanese scene from NXT has been fluid and his popularity is higher now than it ever has been, I am fully expecting him to get the win over a game Kojima.

New Japan’s Two Top Factions to Face Off at War of the Worlds UK

Ring of Honor will be bringing the War of the Worlds UK tour to England later this summer in conjunction with CMLL, New Japan and Revolution Pro.

In what ROH is billing as a “first time ever” match, members of Bullet Club will be taking on Los Ingobernables in the main event of the WOTW London date. Ring of Honor sent out the following press release for the historic bout:

“Two of the most popular groups of the 21st century will meet for the VERY FIRST TIME in a ten-man tag team match in the main event of War of the Worlds UK – London! Bullet Club, represented by ROH World Champion Cody, ROH World Tag Team Champions The Young Bucks, “The Villain” Marty Scurll, and Adam Page meet Los Ingobernables de Japon, comprised of former IWGP Heavyweight Champion Tetsuya Natio, former IWGP Jr. Heavyweight Champion Hiromu Takahashi with Daryl, and the NEVER Openweight Six Men Tag Team Champions BUSHI, EVIL, & SANADA in a dream match fans have requested since the tour was announced!”

WWE SmackDown Recap & Reaction (7/18)

Orton sends Mahal a message while on top of the Punjabi Prison

The Singh Brothers and Jinder Mahal kicked off this week’s episode of SmackDown. The Punjabi Prison structure lowered around them in the ring as ominous music played. The ring was lit yellow and the crowd chanted “USA!”. Jinder Mahal demanded silence because he was the WWE Champion. The Singh Brothers then explained the Punjabi Prison structure and rules for the match. Referees were in the prison and opened the doors as the Singh Brothers instructed them to. The doors will only remain for 60 seconds and a Superstar only has that time to get out of the first structure. The only way to win the match is to climb the second structure in the Punjabi Prison.

The crowd began to chant “Randy Orton” and Mahal once again scolded them. Mahal vowed to take Orton to the top of the Punjabi Prison and Khallas him all the way down to the ground. Mahal stated that two Superstars will enter the Punjabi Prison, but he will be the one that emerges still WWE Champion. Mahal then spoke in Punjabi as the crowd once again chanted “USA!”.

Randy Orton interrupted and came down to the entrance ramp. Orton said that Mahal was either brave or dumb. Orton stated that Mahal is making a conscious decision to be caged up like an animal with Orton in the Punjabi Prison. Orton claimed that Mahal only won the WWE Championship because of the Singh Brothers. Orton approached the prison and removed his sweatshirt. Orton leaned up against the prison and told Mahal that there will be no escape for him this Sunday.

Orton began slowly climbing the cage while still cutting a promo. Orton said that he has nothing to lose this Sunday and said that Mahal embarrassed his family. Orton told Mahal that he was the 50th WWE Champion ever and that he has everything to lose. Randy said that Mahal has the weight of India on his shoulders and climbed towards the top of the prison. Orton asked what he was going to do when India considers Mahal a disgrace. A leather-lunged fan in the crowd then shouted “he is a disgrace!” as Orton reached the top of the prison. Orton said that this was going to be his view on Sunday when he takes back his WWE Championship. Orton then posed on top of the Punjabi Prison and the segment ended.

Reaction: This feud has been lackluster up until now. I thought this promo was really good and both Orton and Mahal did a solid job with their promos. Having said that, I haven’t enjoyed either of Orton and Mahal’s previous two WWE Championship matches before the one taking place at WWE Battleground. I hope that the feud wraps up on Sunday and hopefully it ends on a high note with an entertaining Punjabi Prison match.

Kofi Kingston vs Jimmy Uso

Jimmy drove Kofi into the corner to start off the match. Kofi escaped and stomped on Jimmy several times while he was trapped in the corner. Kofi capped off the beatdown with a Dropkick for a one count. Kofi then proceeded to twerk in Jimmy’s face. Jimmy charged at Kofi but Kingston ducked and Jimmy went flying out of the ring. Kofi flipped onto Jimmy outside as SmackDown went to a commercial break.

During the commercial break, Kofi brought Jimmy back into the ring and booted him in the face. Kofi locked in an Arm Bar but Jimmy powered his way to his feet. Jimmy then rolled out of the ring and Woods and Big E got in his face. Jimmy then got back into the ring but was immediately Clotheslined back to the outside by Kofi. Kingston got up on the ring apron but Jimmy tripped him up and Kofi fell face-first to the ring apron. Jimmy brought Kofi back into the ring and stomped on his chest a couple of times. Jimmy then went for a cover but Kofi kicked out at two. Jimmy locked in a Chin Lock and then shoved Kofi to the mat.

When SmackDown returned from the break, Jimmy applied another Chin Lock. Kofi broke the hold with a Jaawbreaker but Jimmy responded by connecting with a spinning kick for a two count. Jimmy charged at Kofi in the corner but Kofi leaped and connected with both his knees to Jimmy’s chest as both Superstars fell to the mat. Kofi was first to his feet and planted Jimmy with a Dropkick. Kofi pumped up the crowd and went for Trouble in Paradise but Jimmy caught him and slammed Kofi’s head into the turnbuckle. Jimmy went for the pinfall but Kofi kicked out at two.

Jimmy charged at Kofi in the corner but Kingston connected with a kick that knocked Jimmy to the mat. Kofi climbed up the turnbuckle but Jimmy joined him up there and went for a Superplex but Kofi blocked it. Kofi headbutted Jimmy off the turnbuckle and Jey Uso leaped onto the ring apron and distracted Kingston for a moment. Kofi then hit a Crossbody onto Jimmy but Jimmy was able to roll through and pin Kofi for the victory.

Winner: Jimmy Uso

Reaction: I was disappointed with the match between New Day and The Usos at Money in the Bank. I think these two teams are capable of having a great match and I hope we get to see that on Sunday. As for the match between Kofi and Jimmy Uso tonight, it was pretty entertaining. I wouldn’t really be disappointed if either The Usos or New Day win on Sunday. I’m more concerned with the SmackDown tag team division in general. I’m beginning to think that it would be better if the RAW and SmackDown tag divisions combined. I don’t like how there are only a few viable teams in each division and the number of teams keeps going down because WWE seems to be breaking them all up. American Alpha is done, Enzo and Cass is done and SmackDown has been hinting that the Hype Bros are going to break up soon. I’ve always been a fan of tag team wrestling and I find it disappointing how sparse both the divisions are. I wouldn’t have an issue if the tag team division was solely on RAW or SmackDown or if the division floated between both shows.

Charlotte pisses off Becky Lynch and tea time is over

Shane McMahon was backstage with the five Superstars competing for to determine the #1 contender for the SmackDown Women’s Championship at Battleground. Everyone wanted to fight Lana, but Tamina shouted that nobody would be fighting Lana tonight. Natalya suggested that Charlotte face Becky Lynch tonight. Charlotte said that she wanted a competitive match and Becky Lynch got pissed off. Charlotte stated that she has defeated Becky Lynch numerous times and the two began trading words. Shane McMahon said Natalya’s idea was great and made the match official. Charlotte will face Becky Lynch later tonight.

Chad Gable was interviewed backstage about his tag partner Jason Jordan being revealed to be Kurt Angle’s son. Gable said that he had no idea Jordan was Angle’s son but knew something was wrong recently. Gable stated that American Alpha accomplished a lot together but it was time to move on. Gable said he has some ideas for the future but didn’t want to ruin the surprise. Gable said that this was now a great chance for the WWE Universe to see Chad Gable on his own.

Mike Kanellis vs Sami Zayn

Maria Kanellis accompanied Mike down to the ring. Mike’s ring tights reminded me of old school Shawn Michaels or even Billy Gunn back in the day. Sami started out the match in control and connected with a couple of chops in the corner. Sami then climbed up the turnbuckle and connected with a flurry of punches to Kanellis’ head. Mike then rolled out of the ring and Zayn followed him out there and leveled him with a Clothesline. Sami took a break to high-five a fan and then brought Kanellis back into the ring. Sami planted Kanellis with another Clothesline and then hit him with another Clothesline that sent him tumbling out of the ring. Sami once again joined Mike outside the ring and launched him into the barricade as Maria got frustrated ringside.

Back in the ring, Kanellis connected with a right hand but was knocked right back on his ass with another Clothesline courtesy of Sami Zayn. Sami then planted Kanellis with an Exploder Suplex into the corner. Sami was gearing up for the Helluva Kick but Maria got into the ring and stood in front of Mike. Sami started flipping out and demanded that the referee get her out of the ring. The referee finally did but Sami was distracted and Mike connected with a big time right hand. Kanellis then planted Sami with a Samoan Driver (not sure of the finisher name yet) for the victory.

Winner: Mike Kanellis

Reaction: This was a solid match. I would have rather have seen Kanells’ in-ring debut at Battleground this Sunday just to make it feel like a bigger deal. I don’t hate the gimmick, but like a lot of things in WWE, it doesn’t seem to be generating any reaction from the fans. Every single time I see Sami Zayn I always remember that I thought his move to SmackDown would be a great thing for his career. I thought SmackDown was perfect for him and WWE would book him as a bigger star on Tuesday nights. I couldn’t have been more wrong about that because his move from RAW to SmackDown has done absolutely nothing for him.

Rusev gains momentum heading into WWE Battleground on Sunday

John Cena came down to the ring to cut a promo about his Flag Match with Rusev this Sunday at WWE Battleground. Cena stated that out of all the matches going down this Sunday, the match everyone will remember is the Flag Match. Cena pointed to the Bulgarian flag in the corner and the crowd booed. Cena then pointed to the American flag and the crowd cheered. Cena stated that he knows that there are people that don’t like him out there in the crowd, but said that they could all agree that they love the United States of America. Cena said that he was ready for the match on Sunday at WWE Battleground.

Cena then said that the United States is a nation of fighters and they are never afraid to stand up for what they believe. John Cena then spoke about previous wars that took place in America’s history and stated that in the end the American flag flew high. Cena then brought up 9/11 and said that in the end the flag flew high. Cena said that the colors on the flag do not run, they kick ass. Cena grabbed the flag and started waving it around the ring. Rusev then attacked Cena from behind and locked in the Accolade. Cena tried to power out but was unable to. Cena then passed out and Rusev climbed up the turnbuckle and grabbing the Bulgarian flag. Rusev stood tall with the flag and then exited up the entrance ramp while holding the Bulgarian flag high. Rusev then waved the flag around at the top of the entrance ramp. Rusev then put the flag in the stand on top of the entrance ramp and Rusev’s music hit.

Reaction: I may be in the minority here, but I didn’t enjoy this promo at all. I’m all for weaving real life into storylines. I thought what CM Punk and The Undertaker did with the death of Paul Bearer was brilliant. I just want to get that out of the way because I’m not coming at this with a political correctness angle or any of that nonsense.  I just don’t really need Cena referencing 9/11 and wars to promote a throwaway Flag Match with Rusev. It didn’t sit well with me and it wreaked of desperation. I understand that Cena is proud of his country and all, but holy smokes I thought this was a bit much. I’ve never been overwhelmed with American pride while watching a John Cena match and I’m not going to shed a tear when he most likely wins on Sunday.

AJ Styles and Shinsuke Nakamura had a conversation backstage. Nakamura pointed to Styles’ United States Championship and said that he is going to take that from him someday. Nakamura and Styles will be teaming up later tonight.

Becky Lynch vs Charlotte

Natalya joined commentary for this match. The match started out back and forth. Becky took control and connected with a Dropkick. Becky charged at Charlotte but Charlotte avoided it and backflipped twice across the ring. Becky tried to lock in the Dis-Arm-Her but Charlotte rolled out of the ring as SmackDown went to a commercial.

During the break, Charlotte took control of the match and applied a Chin Lock in the middle of the ring. Charlotte kneed Becky in the back a couple of times while she was on the mat. Becky battled back and connected with a Dropkick that sent Charlotte out of the ring. Becky then leaped off the ring apron and hit her with a Clothesline outside the ring.

SmackDown returned with Becky and Charlotte returning to the ring. The two Superstars traded punches for a bit, but Charlotte got the upper-hand and connected with a series of chops. Charlotte then kneed Becky in the face and strutted across the ring. Natalya accused Charlotte of exploiting her father as Charlotte went for a pinfall but Becky kicked out at two. SmackDown Women’s Champion Naomi was shown watching the match backstage.

Becky fought back and planted Charlotte with an Exploder Suplex. Lynch connected with a forearm for a two count. Becky once again went for the Dis-Arm-Her but Charlotte blocked it. Charlotte went for the Natural Selection but Becky caught her and locked in the Dis-Arm-Her. Charlotte broke the hold and connected with a big boot for a two count. Charlotte climbed up to the top rope and went for a Moonsault but Becky rolled out of the way. Becky then locked in the Dis-Arm-Her. Charlotte desperately tried to get out of the hold but Becky brought her to the middle of the ring and Charlotte had no choice but to submit.

After the match, Charlotte and Becky shook hands. Lana and Tamina then came down to the ring and Natalya attacked Charlotte and Becky from behind. Tamina and Lana then attacked Becky Lynch and threw her out of the ring. Natalya went for the Sharpshooter on Tamina but Lana dragged her down from her hair. Natalya then got in Lana’s face but Tamina got back up and booted Natalya in the face.

Winner: Becky Lynch

Reaction: Tamina continues to have Lana’s back for some reason. I’ll admit that I’m interested to find out why that is. I’m actually interested to learn anything about Tamina’s character at this point. I thought Charlotte and Becky had a pretty decent match. I have zero clue who is going to win the Fatal 5-Way to determine the #1 contender for the SmackDown Women’s Championship at Battleground and that is a good thing. I think Becky Lynch would make sense and then have her go into a feud with Carmella after she cashes in. I wouldn’t mind seeing Charlotte, Natalya, Becky or even Tamina win that match. I have zero interest in Lana getting another shot at the title right now. It may be too soon for Tamina as well but it would at least be something different.

Naomi was interviewed backstage by Renee Young. Naomi said that she will be the first person to congratulate the #1 contender on Sunday at Battleground. Carmella then showed up with the MITB briefcase and reminded Naomi that she will be watching her every move. Carmella told Naomi that she will see her at Battleground and walked away.

Another episode of the Fashion Files was shown and this time it was a parody of the X-Files. Breeze was dressed as Agent Scully and was supporting a red wig. Breezango thought they heard a ghost but it turned out to be Aiden English singing. A bright light then appeared and Breezango once again thought it was an alien. A delivery man showed up with a box marked fragile. The delivery man said that he turned the light on and Tyler Breeze signed for the package. Breeze opened it and it was the head of their fake horse (Se7en parody). There was a note in the box that read “Battleground” and Fandango stated that this ends Sunday.

AJ Styles & Shinsuke Nakamura vs Kevin Owens & Baron Corbin

Corbin tried to attack Nakamura from behind during his entrance. Shinsuke was ready and the two started brawling. Styles and Owens then joined the fight on the entrance ramp. Eventually, the Superstars made their way towards the ring and SmackDown went to a commercial break.

When SmackDown returned, Owens and Corbin were in control of the match. Owens beatdown AJ Styles and shouted “that is why I am the best!”. Styles got back to his feet and connected with a Dropkick to Owens. Nakamura was tagged in and he beatdown Owens in the corner. Owens missed with a Clothesline and Nakamura hit Owens with a kick to the side of the head.

Owens threw Nakamura out of the ring and Corbin rolled him right back in and Owens connected with a Senton for a two count. Corbin was then tagged in as Nakamura was isolated in the corner. Corbin stomped on Shinsuke’s chest against the turnbuckle. Referee Charles Robinson got in Corbin’s face and Corbin told him to shut up and that he knew how to count.

Owens got back into the match and continued to beatdown Nakamura a bit. Owens then taunted Styles and tagged Corbin back in. Corbin locked in a Bear Hug on Nakamura in the middle of the ring. Nakamura fought out of the hold and connected with a kick to Corbin and both Superstars fell to the mat. Corbin blasted Styles off the ring apron and prevented Nakamura from tagging out.

Shinsuke hit Corbin with a series of kicks to the chest. Nakamura then perched Corbin across the top rope but Nakamura was distracted by Owens. Corbin planted Nakamura with Deep Six and went for the cover but Styles broke up the pinfall. Corbin got on top of Nakamura and punched him in the face a couple of times.

Nakamura connected with a spin kick and finally tagged in Styles. Owens was tagged in at the same time. Styles connected with a flurry of right hands and knocked Owens to the mat with a Clothesline. Styles then hit a forearm for a two count. Styles went for a Splash but missed. Styles slammed Owens face-first into the mat for a two count. Owens absolutely leveled Styles with a massive Clothesline and both Superstars fell to the mat.

Corbin was then tagged in and Styles kicked him in the shin. Styles went for the Calf Crusher but Corbin launched him across the ring. Styles was then able to lock in the Calf Crusher in the middle of the ring but Corbin dragged himself to the bottom rope to break the hold. Styles geared up for the Phenemenal Forearm but Owens tripped him up on the ring apron. Nakamura and Owens battled outside the ring. Corbin launched Nakamura over the barricade from behind. Back in the ring, Styles hit the Pele Kick and went for the Styles Clash on Corbin. Styles was unaware that Owens had tagged himself in and Owens planted Styles with the Pop-Up Powerbomb for the victory.

Winners: Kevin Owens & Baron Corbin

Reaction: The main-event was decent and overall this was one of the better SmackDowns in recent memory in my opinion. Unfortunately, that is not saying much because this show was simply mediocre. It sucks, but I’ve grown used to being underwhelmed heading into a PPV. Great Balls of Fire at least had some buzz because of the Lesnar and Samoa Joe match. There is really not all that much to get hyped up about for this Sunday’s WWE Battleground PPV. There is always a chance that any WWE PPV will be great and I hope that happens on Sunday. The crowd barely made any noise during tonight’s show and their is just a general lifelessness surrounding the WWE product right now. I doubt that will change after Sunday’s PPV, but I hope that things pick up heading into SummerSlam next month.

What did you think of this week’s episode of SmackDown? Let us know in the comments below.

Mike Kanellis def. Sami Zayn: Maria is at ringside in Mike’s corner for his SmackDown in-ring debut tonight. We see a recap of last week’s segment with Maria slapping Zayn then Mike smashing a vase over his head. Zayn starts off in control and beats on Kanellis until he rolls outside for a breather. His music hits and he raises the flag in the air, but then Rusev runs in out of nowhere and attacks Cena from behind. Rusev boots Cena in the face then locks Cena in the Accolade. Cena tries to fight his way up, but ultimately isn’t able to. Rusev drops Cena, then grabs the Bulgarian flag off the ring post and takes it up to the stage with him.

NJPW Director of U.S Operations Details Next Steps For Expansion

New Japan Pro-Wrestling executives were reportedly impressed by how well their two recent shows in L.A went. Kenny Omega however, has stated he felt NJPW under-estimated the support the promotion has in the United States. Omega has stated in interviews since that he feels the company should have tried to run a bigger building.

It appears the shows were enough to convince NJPW that setting up a full-time office and dojo in Los Angeles is definitely the right next step.

George Carroll Interview Highlights

NJPW’s Director of US Operations, George Carroll, recently sat down with WrestleZone to discuss the company’s future plans.

On NJPW’s Plans for Expansion:

“This is going to be a global branding thing. I can’t go into too many details. We are very protective of what gets out there. Trust me, I’ve gone a little crazy with how stuff gets out and it’s easy to pinpoint how that stuff gets out when you know how protective we are with information. What’s next short term? As it has been laid out there. There are plans to open a dojo and an official LA office that will function for business and meetings. Which is insane at this time. First quarter of next year we should have some updates just based on the marketing team and when they want stuff to get out. I know that is very vague but we just can’t get too deep into it. There is a game plan in place and we don’t want to jump two steps ahead, fall down and have to pick ourselves up. We are being very strategic in how everything is getting out.”

On Ring of Honor’s Support:

“In fact I have personal dealings with the offices of Ring of Honor about things and everything has been great. They haven’t been anything but supportive of us and were there in Long Beach. We are here to support them. The relationship is great and it’s better for the business if that relationship stays strong. Not just for the promotions but for the talent.”

On The Fans from the Los Angeles Shows:

“I am appreciative and blown away by how respectful these fans were both of those nights. They came in expecting to get an authentic New Japan show and that’s exactly what they got. In return they treated themselves with respect. In retrospect I know the fans were really upset that they couldn’t throw streamers because that’s such a huge part of it but they were completely happy. They were completely respectful. It was mind blowing to me that by night two they were quiet like a Japanese audience would be. They reacted when there was something to react to. There was no hijacking going on. Having gone to PWG, ROH or WWE shows you see that stuff happen and there was none of that here. Again, to any of those fans out there listening, myself and the whole staff really appreciate what you did.”
