6 Takeaways From WWE SmackDown (8/28)

The August 28th episode of WWE SmackDown aired live from the ScotiaBank Arena in Toronto, Ontario. In addition to the takeaways below, Billie Kay defeated Naomi in a short match. Here are 6 takeaways from this week’s show:

King Booker Celebrated With New Day

SmackDown Tag Team Champions New Day came down to the ring to celebrate becoming 5-time champions.

Booker T interrupted as King Booker and joined New Day in the ring. Booker introduced himself as ruler of the SmackDown world. New Day bowed before King Booker as referred to Woods as “Lord Xavier the Wise” and Kingston as “Sir Kofi the Brave”. Booker simply referred to Big E as “Big E” and that pissed the big man off.

Big E said he wanted a cool nickname and accused Booker of going “full Saxton” on him. King Booker got angry and told Big E that he should be on his knees kissing his feet. King Booker then welcomed New Day to the 5-timers championship club and did a spin-a-rooni in the middle of the ring. Woods and Kingston also did a spin-a-rooni and then Big E flopped on the canvas as Xavier & Kofi spun him around.

The Bar Moved A Step Closer Towards A Title Shot

New Day then joined commentary for a Triple Threat match between Gallows & Anderson, Epico & Primo & The Bar. Sheamus and Karl Anderson started off the match. Sheamus connected with a shoulder tackle and then posed in the ring. Anderson got up and Dropkicked Sheamus in the face for a near fall.

Cesaro tagged in and delivered a couple uppercuts to Anderson’s face. Anderson battled back with another Dropkick and then tagged in Gallows. Gallows bounced Cesaro’s head off the top turnbuckle and then beat him down in the corner of the ring. Gallows followed it up with a Suplex for a two count.

Anderson got back and walked right into an uppercut from Cesaro. Primo tagged himself in and connected with a chop to Anderson’s chest. Epico then tagged in and continued to beat the hell out of Anderson as the crowd chanted “we want pancakes!”. Karl Anderson decked Epico with a boot to the face and then hopped up on the second rope.

Primo distracted Anderson from the apron and Epico shoved Anderson to the floor outside the ring. Epico then tagged in and leveled Anderson with a Clothesline as SmackDown went to a commercial break.

When SmackDown returned, The Bar was in control and had Karl Anderson isolated in the ring. Sheamus lifted Anderson up in the Torture Rack but Karl escaped and dropped Sheamus with a Neckbreaker. Anderson leaped across the ring to tag in Gallows as Cesaro tagged in at the same time.

Gallows sent Cesaro to the corner of the ring and connected with a Splash. Gallows then delivered a Pump Handle Slam and followed it up with another Splash for a two count. Primo tagged himself in and leaped towards Gallows but got a boot to his face for his troubles.

Anderson and Gallows then cleared the ring and went for the Magic Killer on Primo. Epico broke it up and took out Gallows and Anderson. Cesaro then tagged in as Sheamus took out the Colons outside the ring. Cesaro hit a big uppercut on Gallows for the pinfall victory.

SmackDown GM Paige then spoke with Rusev, Aiden English, and Lana backstage. Paige informed Rusev Day that they will face SAnitY and The Usos next week in a Triple Threat match. The winner of that match will then face The Bar to determine the #1 contenders of the SmackDown Tag Team Championships.

Jeff Hardy Will Face Randy Orton At Hell In A Cell

Jeff Hardy came down to the ring to issue a challenge to Randy Orton. Hardy noted that Orton has this strange obsession with him and that Randy made him believe that he could fly. Hardy then rolled footage of his Swanton Bomb on Orton on last week’s episode of SmackDown.

Hardy claimed that was just the beginning and dared Orton to come down to the ring. Orton answered the call and walked down to the entrance ramp with a microphone in his hand. Orton congratulated Hardy on rediscovering himself and appreciated Jeff giving him the credit for all of that.

Randy stated that he is not finished working on Jeff Hardy and that he is going to end Jeff’s career. Orton said that he needed to leave Hardy as a heap of broken bones in the middle of the ring to accomplish that.

Orton added that he was not going to get in the ring under Hardy’s terms tonight. Jeff interrupted and challenged Orton to a Hell in a Cell match at the PPV next month. Orton nodded his head and stared at Jeff to conclude the segment.

The Miz & Maryse Sent A Message

Daniel Bryan and Brie Bella came down to the ring to cut a promo on The Miz & Maryse. Bryan brought up The Miz mocking his retirement speech last week and said that The Miz is a very poor actor. Bryan called Miz a coward once again for hiding behind Maryse last week.

Brie stated that Maryse is always helping Miz cheat to win but it felt really good to punch Miz in the face. Daniel joked that it was also really hot and referred to Brie as a “butt-kicking, diaper changing, face-punching hot mama” and vowed to shut Miz & Maryse up at WWE Hell in a Cell.

Andrade “Cien” Almas and Zelina Vega interrupted and marched to the ring. Vega introduced herself as the breathtaking, deal-making business manager for Almas. Vega boasted about Almas putting Sin Cara on the shelf, bringing AJ Styles to his limit and destroying Rusev. Zelina added that it was no time for Almas to outwrestle Daniel Bryan.

Bryan asked Paige to come out and make the match official. Paige came down to the entrance ramp out of breath and stated that she just had to run out here in heels. Paige asked the crowd if they wanted to see the match and then made it official.

Bryan and Almas locked up to start off the match. Andrade got the upper-hand and connected with a shoulder tackle. Almas then posed in between the ropes but Bryan Dropkicked him out of the ring as Miz & Maryse were shown backstage watching the match.

Back in the ring, Bryan rolled up Almas for a two count and Andrade responded with a giant chop to Daniel’s chest that echoed throughout the arena. Bryan responded with a few chops of his own and then a few kicks in the corner of the ring. Daniel went for a Dropkick but Almas countered with a knee to the face. Andrade went for another knee to the face but Bryan dodged it and sent Almas flying out of the ring.

Bryan connected with a running knee off the ring apron and then brought Almas back inside the ring. Daniel made his way to the top rope but missed and Almas hit an awesome back elbow to Bryan’s face for a near fall. Maryse and Miz were shown walking away from the TV backstage as SmackDown went to a commercial break.

When SmackDown returned, Almas climbed to the top rope as Bryan got back to his feet in the ring. Bryan tripped Andrade up and then joined him up on the top turnbuckle. Daniel hit Almas with a Superplex as The Miz’s music hit.

The Miz slowly walked towards the ring in an effort to distract Bryan. Daniel hit Miz with a Suicide Dive but Almas capitalized by leaping onto Bryan from the ring apron. Andrade brought Bryan back inside the ring and once again climbed to the top rope. Almas went for a Moonsault but Bryan got his knees up and then locked in the Yes Lock. Zelina Vega hopped up on the ring apron but Brie knocked her down. Maryse then attacked Brie Bella from behind and slammed her into the ring post.

The Miz hopped into the ring and attacked Bryan and the match ended in DQ. Almas planted Bryan with the Hammerlock DDT and then Miz applied the Yes Lock to Bryan. Daniel was forced to watch as Vega hit Brie with Double Knees and Maryse planted her with a DDT. The Miz then hit Bryan with the Skull Crushing Finale and shared a kiss with Maryse as Brie and Daniel were laid out on the canvas.

Samoa Joe Called AJ’s Wife

WWE Champion AJ Styles made his way to the ring as footage of Samoa Joe’s attack on him last week was shown on the broadcast. AJ claimed that Joe was not man enough to take the title from him. Styles added that Joe was not a man because he had to resort to mind games.

AJ demanded that Samoa Joe come down to the ring so that he could knock his teeth down his throat. Joe appeared on the jumbotron and said that he wasn’t going to come down to the ring tonight. Joe asked who is there for AJ’s kids right now and added that he wasn’t done playing daddy yet. Joe then pulled out a phone and called AJ’s wife.

Joe stated that he knows why she is angry and that he is going to keep the promise that AJ never did and send him home. Samoa Joe told Wendy to save him a plate for the back to school BBQ next Tuesday night. Joe hung up and laughed as AJ Styles sprinted backstage to look for him.

Becky Lynch Attacked Charlotte

Charlotte Flair defended her SmackDown Women’s Championship against Carmella in the main event of this week’s SmackDown. Before the match, Charlotte was interviewed backstage by Renee Young. Flair said that she was going to run through Carmella tonight and then give Becky Lynch the spotlight because Becky cannot win the big one.

Flair started off the match in control and slammed Carmella to the canvas. Carmella went for a roll-up but Charlotte kicked out at two as the crowd chanted “we want Becky!”. Carmella applied a Headlock and mocked the crowd for chanting for Becky. Charlotte lifted Carmella up in an effort to break the hold but Carmella held on and brought Flair back to the mat.

Flair broke free for a moment but Carmella bashed her face into the turnbuckle and applied the Headlock once again. Charlotte escaped and knocked Carmella to the mat with a Clothesline. Flair made her way to the top rope but Carmella got up and shoved her off the top and into the barricade surrounding the ring.

Carmella hit Flair with a Crossbody through the ropes and brought her back inside the ring. Carmella went for a cover but Flair kicked out at two as SmackDown went to a commercial break.

Carmella had Charlotte in another Headlock when SmackDown returned from the break. Flair escaped but Carmella hit her with a boot to the face that sent Flair to the corner. Carmella hit a Crossbody off the top rope and followed it up with a Flatliner for a two count.

Carmella hit an awesome Frankensteiner off the top rope and went for the cover but Flair was somehow able to kick at two. Carmella got pissed off and started shouting in Flair’s face. She then hit Charlotte with back to back Superkicks but Charlotte once again kicked out. Charlotte blocked Carmella’s third attempt at a Superkick and hit her with a Spear. Charlotte followed it up with the Natural Selection and then locked in the Figure Eight for the submission victory.

After the match, Becky Lynch attacked from Charlotte from behind as the crowd chanted “yes!”. Becky demanded a microphone as the crowd chanted “let’s go Becky!”. Lynch grabbed the SmackDown Women’s Championship and said she is taking the title back at Hell in a Cell. Becky then called Charlotte a bitch and raised the title in the middle of the ring. SmackDown went off the air with the crowd booing Charlotte Flair as she sat in the corner of the ring.

Opinion: This week’s SmackDown was very entertaining. I thought Almas and Bryan had a solid match and The Miz & Maryse’s attack was also well done. There is absolutely no chance in hell that the crowd is going to boo Becky Lynch as WWE builds towards Hell in a Cell. It will be interesting to see how they handle that or just simply ignore the crowd as usual.

Match Announced For Next Week’s WWE SmackDown Live

WWE has announced the first match for next week’s episode of SmackDown Live. First up is The Usos vs. Sanity vs. Rusev Day as part of the mini-tournament to determine the new #1 contenders for the SmackDown Tag Team Titles.

As seen on this week’s episode of SmackDown Live in Toronto, Canada at the Scotiabank Arena on the USA Network, The Bar (Sheamus & Cesaro) beat Luke Gallows & Karl Anderson and The Colons.

The winners of next week’s match will face The Bar in two weeks with the winners of that contest to challenge The New Day for the SmackDown Tag Team Titles at the upcoming Hell in a Cell pay-per-view event that goes down on Sunday, September 16, 2018 in San Antonio, Texas at the AT&T Center and will air on the WWE Network.

WWE holds next week’s show in Detroit, MI at the Little Caesars Arena. As of this writing, no other matches for SmackDown has been announced.

The New Day won the titles from The Bludgeon Brothers (Luke Harper & Erick Rowan) on last week’s episode of SmackDown Live in Brooklyn, NY. The reason for the title change is due to Rowan suffering an injury at SummerSlam and having to undergo surgery to fix it.

Two Big Matches Advertised For WWE Live Event At MSG

The WWE is slated to make a return to world’s most famous arena, Madison Square Garden, in New York City on Wednesday, December 26th, 2018 for a live event. This event will feature the superstars from the blue brand, SmackDown Live.

The arena has released two matches that are advertised to take place. Those matches are AJ Styles vs. Samoa Joe and Daniel Bryan vs. The Miz.

Charlotte Flair, Carmella, The New Day, Shinsuke Nakamura, Becky Lynch, Asuka, Naomi, Jeff Hardy, and The Bar are advertised to appear. The WWE will be announcing more matches for this live event in the coming months. For decades, WWE considered MSG their home arena and only the company held events at this arena. However, that all changed once ROH and NJPW teamed up to hold an event there during WrestleMania 34 weekend.

WWE has already announced that Styles would defend the WWE Title against Joe and Bryan would team with his wife, Brie Bella, to take on Maryse and The Miz in a mixed tag team match at the upcoming Hell in a Cell pay-per-view event.

That show goes down on Sunday, September 16, 2018 in San Antonio, Texas at the AT&T Center and will air on the WWE Network and some traditional pay-per-view outlets.

Jeff Hardy’s Opponent At WWE Hell In A Cell Announced

Jeff Hardy’s wish has been granted by Vince McMahon. A Hell in a Cell match between Hardy and Randy Orton has been announced for the upcoming WWE Hell in a Cell PPV. Hardy has stated in previous interviews that he has always wanted to compete in this match.

This has been a match in the making for a few weeks. If you recall, Shinsuke Nakamura beat Hardy to win the United States Title at the WWE Extreme Rules pay-per-view event in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania at the PPG Paints Arena on the WWE Network. Following the match, Orton made his return after being on the sidelines due to a recent surgery to have an intense staredown with Nakamura and then laying out Hardy. Moving along, on an episode of SmackDown Live on the USA Network, the company booked a rematch between Hardy and Nakamura that saw the finish once again have Orton cost Hardy the match. Then, Orton attacked Hardy once again in devastating fashion. Now, Hardy gets his revenge on Orton.

The Hell in a Cell pay-per-view event takes place on Sunday, September 16, 2018 in San Antonio, Texas at the AT&T Center and will air on the WWE Network and some traditional pay-per-view outlets.

Paige Opens Up On Retiring From Wrestling, Transition To SmackDown Live GM

Paige recently spoke with Alicia Atout for A Music Blog, Yea! in Pittsburgh where she spoke about various topics including being forced to retire from in-ring action as well as her transition to being the General Manager of SmackDown Live.

Paige noted that it was a surprise to her because she knew it was coming as a week before the decision because they told her that it might happen. She then lost her voice and they told her if she didn’t regain her voice then she wouldn’t be making the announcement at all. She stated that she was able to get it back and made it but then was told by WWE management via a text that she needed to stay the next day for SmackDown Live, which she felt like it “was like putting salt in the wound.”

She continued by stating that once she showed up, Road Dogg was there and told her that she would be the GM of the blue brand. Once she walked out it was good and she got goosebumps. “I thought it was the end for me, and then it wasn’t. It was a beautiful beginning, I love what I do now.”

She was in a six-woman tag match back in late December at a live event that needed to be called off after she took a hard kick to the back from Sasha Banks that she wasn’t ready for and it stunned her. The early belief was it was just a mild stinger, leading to her losing feeling in her extremities.

WWE pulled her from the ring and set up further testing that led to the call being made that she would not be cleared by WWE doctors to wrestle again. It was a situation described as similar to Edge’s medical disqualification from competing in the ring.

He wrote, “It’s not enough to attack from behind or to play games with a man’s family. A match at #HIAC isn’t about sneaking around or phone calls…it’s about proving over and again why I. Am. Phenomenal. #AndStill.”

Former Champion Backstage At SmackDown

Several notable names are backstage at this week’s episode of SmackDown Live in Toronto, Canada at the Scotiabank Arena that will air on the USA Network including former WWE Intercontinental Champion Santino Marella. PWinsider.com also notes that WWE Hall of Famer Trish Stratus, Maryse, and Brie Bella are among those backstage.

As of this writing, there’s no word yet on if Stratus will appear on the show to hype her match against former WWE RAW Women’s Champion Alexa Bliss at the Evolution pay-per-view event on Sunday, October 28, 2018 in Long Island, New York at the Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum but is most likely just visiting.

As we noted earlier on the site, Maryse is expected to be a regular character going forward to hype her mixed tag team match alongside The Miz against Daniel Bryan and Brie Bella WWE Hell In a Cell.

Cody Rhodes Talks ALL IN, Randy Orton, and Future Shows during Reddit AMA

Cody Rhodes never shies away from a tough question. The former WWE superstar turned independent wrestling darling had plenty to answer during a Reddit ‘ask me anything’ session with fans on Tuesday. This weekend, Rhodes will serve as performer and promoter for the highly anticipated ALL IN pay-per-view that is expected to be the biggest independent wrestling card of 2018.

Despite a busy week ahead, Rhodes took time to answer questions about some of his favorite moments in the ring, plenty about the upcoming ALL IN show and he even addressed a notorious rumor regarding Randy Orton.

Here’s the best of the best from Cody Rhodes’ AMA on Reddit:

Promoting Future Shows

This weekend, Cody will put on his promoter hat after teaming up with the Young Bucks to put on the ambitious ALL IN card that takes place in Chicago. Obviously, Cody still loves in ring competition but does this latest show mean he’s thinking about turning promoter again in the future?

“I don’t know,” Rhodes answered. “I’m already over budget and overtime.”

Still, Rhodes says he wouldn’t have it any other way because he invited the headaches that he knew would happen with a show of this magnitude.

“I wanted the stress,” Rhodes stated.

Security at All In

Sadly after the shooting in Jacksonville just days ago during a Madden football tournament, some fans were curious about the security at the ALL IN pay-per-view, which is being held just outside of Chicago.

“Security was beefy from the jump, but we’ve added several levels and the building is an incredibly secure and disciplined building,” Rhodes stated.

All In Taking Place In Different Cities

Several months back, Rhodes had teased several potential locations for the ALL IN card and he even mentioned Dublin, Ireland as a possible landing spot. It turns out, Cody was dead serious about turning this show into an international card but ultimately they decided on Chicago instead.

“Loved the fans at OTT. Promoter wasn’t too keen on me and the ref actually had the balls to tell me to “take it home” during a triple-threat match. Yea, I’ll telepathically do that bud,” Rhodes wrote.

“But we weren’t lying. Dublin was considered and I’d love to be back there. Such a fun crowd that night.”

While they aren’t traveling to Europe, Rhodes was asked about bringing in more talent from overseas to perform on the ALL IN show. Sadly, Rhodes says navigating the difficult visa system made it nearly impossible to get everybody possible on the card.

“One issue with talents from outside countries was visas,” Rhodes explained. “The three of us were not versed in how that works properly. Securing the Canadian and Japanese ones were rather difficult. Lesson learned though.”

Marty vs. Okada

When it came time to booking the show, Rhodes had lots of ideas for the talent involved including the highly anticipated matchup between Kazuchika Okada and Marty Scurll.

“Nick Jackson wanted Marty to have a match. I had Marty doing a “singing segment”. Nick was right,” Rhodes joked.

The Best Advice Cody Has Received In Wrestling

Outside of ALL IN, Rhodes also answered a few questions from his past including the best advice he’s ever been given since becoming a professional wrestler.

“Never let them convince you that you aren’t the star of that tag team” -Joey Mercury

These days, Rhodes says he’s listening to himself for the best possible advice after receiving plenty from WWE CEO Vince McMahon and his own famous father, Dusty Rhodes.

“I got 10 years of advice from [Vince] and 30 years of advice from Dusty…invaluable, but got to follow my own advice now,” Rhodes said.

The Brotherhood vs. The Shield at WWE Battleground 2013

Rhodes also addressed one of his favorite moments from the past when he teamed with his brother Dustin in a match at WWE Battleground against The Shield team of Roman Reigns and Seth Rollins. That night, Cody hit the ‘Cross Rhodes’ to get the pin in front of his father and that still serves as one of the best moments of his entire career.

“Sorry I’m a little late! It’s definitely in my TOP-5,” Rhodes stated.

So .. Did He Shake Randy Orton’s Hand?

And finally just to add a little levity to the Q&A, Rhodes was asked about his former partner Randy Orton, who recently had some rumors brought up about his backstage behavior, especially when it came to shaking hands with people.

Rather than avoid the question, Rhodes offered his own hilarious answer.

“We hugged,” Rhodes said.

Trish Stratus Discusses Her WWE RAW Return, Facing Alexa Bliss

On Monday’s RAW from Toronto, WWE Hall of Famer Trish Stratus made a surprise return.  Stratus interrupted Elias while he was doing an in-ring promo and they exchanged some words.

This led to Ronda Rousey and Natalya joining her the ring while Alexa Bliss, Mickie James, and Alicia Fox came out to the stage that saw Bliss invoke her rematch with Rousey for the RAW Women’s Title at Hell in a Cell. The former RAW Women’s Champion also hyped her match with Stratus at WWE Evolution.

After RAW, WWE released this video of Trish reacting to her big night. She spoke about what it was like returning in her hometown (Toronto), the women’s revolution and her upcoming match against Alexa Bliss at Evolution.

Trish said when she was forging her path during the Attitude Era, the female wrestlers were always trying to be “part of the boys.” They wanted to be welcomed into the wrestling community. Today, it is amazing to see how far they have come. She feels that the women have finally made it. They have made their mark and are veiwed as equals to the male wrestlers.  She is proud to be part of WWE Evolution and vows to whoop Bliss’ butt.

Watch Trish Stratus talk about her surprise return on RAW:

The Evolution pay-per-view event takes place on Sunday, October 28, 2018 in Long Island, New York at the Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum and will air on the WWE Network. As of this writing, no other matches have been officially announced.

Paul Heyman Praises Maria Kanellis As Most Underrated Creative Mind In Pro Wrestling

Paul Heyman has given some high praise to Maria Kanellis. On his official Twitter account, Maria’s husband, Mike Kanellis, had an interaction with a fan and in that discussion, Mike dared the fan to ask Heyman what he thought of Maria.

This is when Heyman gave the praise to her by stating that he thinks she is “the most underrated creative mind in the industry” and “has been since 2005 when I witnessed it myself in WWE.” You can see his tweet here:

If you recall, Maria and Mike made their debut as a couple on WWE television at last year’s Money in the Bank pay-per-view event by cutting a promo about how everyone would know what the Power Of Love was all about.

It’s been an exciting time for the married couple since then as Mike is now approaching one-year of sobriety and they had their first child, daughter Freddie Moon. When Maria announced that they were expecting, she was taken off the road with the sports entertainment company.

She was last seen on WWE television during the RAW 25 Anniversary show back on January 22, 2018 where WWE honored her as well as Jacqueline, Trish Stratus, Bella Twins, Maryse, Kelly Kelly, Lilian Garcia, Torrie Wilson, Michelle McCool, Terri Runnels as women who contributed to the company’s success.

Earlier this month, Kanellis revealed that she suffered a broken wrist while training for her return to the ring and would be in a cast for six weeks. Kanellis added that she will be recovered in time for the WWE Evolution pay-per-view on October 28.

Two WWE NXT UK Stars Injured

Two WWE NXT UK stars have apparently suffered injuries. Travis Banks and Sam Gradwell both announced on social media that they’re dealing with injuries.

Travis Banks

Banks released a statement and revealed he suffered a dislocated shoulder during a recent match. He assumed he would be medically cleared to return by now. However, that’s not the case and he doesn’t have a return date:

“Hello everyone. As probably a surprise to no one now. About a month ago I suffered a dislocated shoulder.

“Initially I thought I would be clear to wrestle sooner rather than later. However, that hasn’t been the case and unfortunately, I still don’t have a return date to give everyone.

“At the moment shows and dates I have been advertised for will have to be postponed until I’m cleared. I will try [to] keep you all updated as best as possible. Many blessings.”

Sam Gradwell

Gradwell released a statement of his own. He noted that, during a recent WWE physical, doctors detected a suspected re-injury or loosening of his left ACL. In 2012 Gradwell had that ACL reconstructed:

“Currently awaiting an MRI to assess damage (hopefully minimal) but in the meantime, I am unfortunately not cleared to wrestle.

“Apologies to those who were looking forward to seeing me wrestle over the coming weeks, hopefully, it’s nothing major and I’ll be back ASAP!”

On Tuesday (August 28, 2018), the Baltimore-based promotion announced on their official website and social media that The Briscoes will be defending their titles against SoCal Uncensored members Christopher Daniels & Frankie Kazarian at the PPV. This marks the second match officially announced for the show.

The Briscoes are slated to take on Kazarian & Scorpio Sky in a non-title match at All In which will air during the Zero Hour broadcast on WGN America this weekend at the Sears Centre Arena in Hoffman Estates, Illinois.

Ring of Honor is slated to hold their Death Before Dishonor pay-per-view event at the Orleans Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada on Friday, September 28, 2018. The event will air on traditional PPV outlets and the FITE TV app. The promotion will be announcing more matches in the coming weeks.

WWE Reportedly Making Moves For Saudi Arabia Return

WWE seems to be angling for their Saudi Arabia return.

This past April, WWE put on a massive show in the middle east. WWE called it The Greatest Royal Rumble, which featured several huge names from the industry. It also featured numerous title bouts, gimmick matches and returning WWE legends.

The night was capped off by the biggest Battle Royal match in WWE history. A 50-man Greatest Royal Rumble match. The bout was eventually won by Braun Strowman. WWE’s Saudi Arabian show was a huge success financially.

It appears as though they’re angling for a Saudi Arabia return later this year. PWInsider is reporting that WWE has rescheduled two of their European tour dates to May of 2019. WWE moved their October 31st show from Stockholm, Sweden to May 11th.

They also moved their Oslo, Norway event on November 1st to May 12th. It was noted that this move was made because WWE is expected to return to Saudi Arabia in the first week of November. WWE has yet to officially announce such an event.

Discussion: What do you think about WWE returning to Saudi Arabia later this year? Did you enjoy The Greatest Royal Rumble? Sound off in the comments section below!

Goldberg Open To Wrestling The Undertaker, Says WWE HOF Ceremony ‘Sucks’

WWE Hall of Famer Bill Goldberg recently spoke with the guys from Inside The Ropes after his sold-out stage show from Dublin, Ireland. Goldberg spoke about a variety of topics, including his thoughts on the WWE Hall of Fame Ceremony, feeling like a caged animal on RAW the night after WrestleMania and the possibility of wrestling The Undertaker. Here are the highlights

WWE’s Hall of Fame Ceremony

Bill Goldberg was the headline inductee for this year’s WWE Hall of Fame class. By the time Goldberg gave his induction speech, many of the WWE Superstars had already left the arena. The ceremony lasts 3+ hours during WWE’s busiest weekend of the year. Goldberg reveals he spoke to Vince McMahon about the need to make changes to the event’s formt.

“First and foremost I went to Vince and I told him my impression of the Hall Of Fame and what should happen,” Goldberg said. “I don’t think it’s a justice to the people being inducted. I don’t think it’s a justice to the fans that sit there for four hours. I think it needs to be changed completely right up on its head.”

He continued, “It needs to be changed because it sucks … I don’t care about what other people say or how they did it, I’m telling you in my experience as a headliner in 2018 in the Hall Of Fame — it needs to be changed.”

The Possibility of Wrestling The Undertaker

The night after WrestleMania, Goldberg addressed the WWE Universe as a Hall of Famer. He thanked everyone for supporting him during his latest WWE run. He was very grateful that his son got a chance to see him be ‘Goldberg’ in person.

Goldberg also revealed that it was very difficult for him to be backstage at Raw, because he saw all the Superstars going out and doing what he loves to do. He is very competitive,  and still has the itch to compete under the right circumstances. When asked about the possibility of wrestling The Undertaker, Goldberg was very specific with the wording of his answer.

“No, don’t put words in my mouth,” Goldberg said when asked if he ‘would like’ to have a match against The Undertaker.  I wouldn’t like to have it. If it became available and it was right and people wanted it, I’m still capable of doing it. Because once I sit here and say, ‘It’s a match I’d like to have,’ it means that I’m asking for it. I’m not asking for anything. i’m just saying, if the cards fell right, I wouldn’t say no.”

Smackdown & 205 Live Preview 8/28: Carmella vs Charlotte Flair

Tonight’s episode of Smackdown and 205 Live will emanate from Scotiabank Arena in Toronto, ON, Canada. The city and venue have just been announced as the host of Summerslam 2019 weekend.

Smackdown 8/28 Preview

Smackdown Women’s Championship
Charlotte Flair (c) vs Carmella

Carmella has cashed-in her rematch clause and will face Charlotte Flair tonight for the title. This will be the 4th time the two women have faced each other for the Smackdown Women’s title.

Carmella cashed in her Money in the Bank briefcase on the April 10th, 2018 Smackdown. She defeated Charlotte Flair in 7 seconds to win her first WWE championship. Flair then cashed in her rematch at Backlash but Carmella rolled her up and pinned her after Flair’s knee buckled following a missed moonsault.

Flair then defeated both Becky Lynch and Carmella in a triple threat match for the title at Summerslam. What role Becky Lynch might play in this match is unclear.

New Day Celebrate Tag Team Championship Gold

After winning the championships last week, New Day will hold a title-victory celebration tonight.

Don’t expect the Bludgeon Brothers to interrupt this celebration either. Rowan is likely out for several months with a torn bicep.

Tag-Team #1 Contenders Tournament
The Club vs The Bar vs The Colons

https://twitter.com/RealPaigeWWE/status/1033793943098482689?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E1033793943098482689&ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Fs46315.p1736.sites.pressdns.com%2Fpaige-tournament-challengers-new-day%2F

For the second straight month, Paige has organized a tournament to determine new contenders for the Smackdown tag-team championships.

There will be two triple threat tag-team matches with the winning two teams facing off to determine who gets a crack at New Day. The second triple-threat match participants have yet to be announced.

The Colons return to action for the first time since January as Epico has been out with an injury.

Daniel Bryan and Brie Bella Segment

The rivalry between WWE power couples will continue to tonight. Last week, an inter-gender match between Brie and Bryan against the Miz and Maryse was confirmed for Hell in a Cell.

Not much is advertised for this other than Bryan and Bella will likely be involved in a talking segment.

Samoa Joe and AJ Styles Segment

It was confirmed last week that Samoa Joe and AJ Styles will once again wrestle for the WWE Championship at Hell in a Cell. Joe came out of their Summerslam tilt with the victory but not the championship after Styles was DQ’ed.

This highly personal rivalry, which has involved Styles’ wife and daughter, will rage on tonight.

205 Live 8/28 Preview

Drew Gulak Demands Another Shot At The Cruiserweight Championship

Drew Gulak has put the entire division on notice that there will be no peace until he receives a rematch for the Cruiserweight Championship.

Gulak dropped the most recent CW title match to Cedric Alexander on the Summerslam Kickoff show. Alexander used a clever pinning combination to get the victory over the submission expert to retain.

What does Drew Gulak have in store for 205 Live tonight?

Nick Jackson Battling Major Flu Bug Ahead Of All In, Being the Elite Notes

Nick Jackson is said to be battling an illness just days out from All In and Starrcast weekend. Cody, Matt Jackson, and others have been asking fans to send the 29-year-old well-wishes.

“Full blown flu for the last 24 hours,” Nick Tweeted. “That 12 hours of travel home was the worst of my life. BTE might be delayed this week. I’ll keep you updated.”

Being the Elite was released a little later than normal this week. The Bucks didn’t factor heavily into the episode, however.

Being the Elite Notes

  • Marty Scurll opened the show this week and cut a promo on Okada. Scurll has been trying to bulk up for the match and prove he is a heavyweight. Okada has joked that after he beats Scurll, he’ll send the Villain to 205 Live.
  • Cody tried to give Stephen Amell some advice on how to face Christopher Daniels at All In. Daniels interrupted them, however. Amell said he was going to beat Daniels and that he wanted some royalties from the Young Bucks for wearing their T-shirts (Cody wasn’t impressed with this comment). He then said his first single’s victory would be Daniels’ last match.
  • Joey Janela interuptted a Hangman Page autograph signing and smoked a cigarette inside. He stabbed Page’s hand with a pen and said he’d see him at All In.
  • Rey Mysterio cut a promo about his main event match against the Bucks and Kota Ibushi. After the director called “cut” the cameras kept rolling and Rey revealed he isn’t getting paid for the event but is just doing Cody a solid. Some are saying the person he was talking to is the actor who played Juice on Sons of Anarchy but that is not confirmed.
  • SCU trained like Rocky in Philadelphia. At first the crew seemed to enjoy the city but after awhile they figured out that they like SCU way better.

Is Black Machismo All In?

  • The Bucks ran into Jay Lethal in the back. Lethal has been acting funny as of late. With the simplest bump to the head Lethal has been chanelling his old “Black Machismo” gimmick from TNA. This week he opened his travel bag and saw only Macho Man wrestling gear. Lethal left in a huff but when the camera panned back to his bag it showed his normal Jay Lethal gear.
  • Chico asked Cody to book some of his family into the Over Budget Battle Royal.
  • Jay Lethal had a conversation with Black Machismo in the mirror while in the washroom. Black Machismo said he’ll be going to All In and not Jay Lethal.
  • A fan gifted Hangman Page a new pair of boots that he hopes don’t talk to him.
  • Finally, Cody’s promo from the last ROH event was shown. He said WWE does not own all of professional wrestling. Cody did not take the opportunity to book Flip Gordon for the show, however.

ROH COO Joe Koff: We Are Not Sports Entertainment

Don’t tell Ring of Honor’s Joe Koff he is in the sports entertainment business. According to ROH’s Chief Operating Officer, his promotion is an “entertaining sport” but not “sports entertainment.”

“I think people are seeing something that they’ve longed for, and didn’t realize they longed for, which is unbelievable good wrestling,” Koff said to Forbes recently. “We are not sports entertainment, we are an entertaining sport.”

Joe Koff On Ring of Honor’s Future

It’s been a remarkable year for the 16-year old promotion. Koff does not want to take any credit of All In’s success away from Cody and the Bucks, however. He was quick to say All In is their event and not ROH’s.

“All In was Cody and the Young Bucks and their vision,” Koff said. “How Ring of Honor played into that, is we supported them in doing this. So, they sold out the 10,000-seat arena. We didn’t. They did.”

The promotion sold out Madison Square Garden for next year’s G1 Supercard of Honor in conjunction with NJPW as well.

“Our people, the New Japan people, these men and women are athletes,” Koff continued. “And both of our platforms give them this opportunity to show their best. And I think what people are beginning to realize is that this is the best.”

ROH TV Results 8/27: The Elite vs The Kingdom

Ring of Honor television aired last night. The promotion’s television show airs throughout the weekend on various networks and then on Honor Club every Monday.

This week’s episode was taped from the famous Center State in Atlanta, GA.

ROH TV Results 8/27

  • Christopher Daniels (SCU) defeated Jay Briscoe via DQ

Christopher Daniels had just hit Jay Briscoe with a uranage when Mark Briscoe ran-in with a chair. He hit Daniels in the back causing the DQ.

Scorpio Sky and Kazarian then hit the ring to save Daniels from a 2-on-1 attack.

The Briscoes will take on Scorpio Sky and Kazarian at All In. Daniels will take on Stephen Amell from the show “Arrow”.

  • Flip Gordon defeated Silas Young

Flip Gordon rolled up Young into a pinning combination with a bridge for the victory here. After the match, however, Bully Ray hit the ring and delivered a low blow to the young prospect.

Ray and Young locked eyes for a few moments but nothing happened.

  • ROH 6-Man Tag-Team Championships
Cody, Matt & Nick Jackson (Bullet Club Elite) defeated Matt Taven, TK O’Ryan, and Vinny Marseglia (the Kingdom) (c) – Title Change

We have new ROH 6-Man Tag Team Champions, as the Elite defeated the Kingdom. The match was not without controversy, however, and the Kingdom will likely claim there has been a conspiracy against them.

Cody pinned Vinny Marseglia after Cross Rhodes for the victory but Matt Taven was the legal man for his team. Taven attempted to argue the official decision after the match but to no avail. The Kingdom will likely be given a rematch sometime in the near future.

Also this week:

Kenny King and Marty Scurll each commented on their match from last week. King defeated Scurll after putting his feet on the ropes for leverage. He explained this week that he learned during his match with Austin Aries that sometimes you have to cheat to win.

Scurll commented about how King had embraced his inner-villain but that he was going to get his revenge.

Maria Kanellis Wants WWE To Bring Back The Divas Championship

Maria Kanellis wants to bring back the Divas Championship. The title was retired at WrestleMania 32 when Charlotte Flair won the new WWE Women’s Championship.

When asked on Twitter recently, Kanellis said the one thing she would change about the Women’s Evolution is to bring back the now-retired title.

Kanellis would explain her position in later Tweets.

“There are few people that truly understand what the Divas title was supposed to be,” she continued. “It was supposed to be another title to fight for, just like there are today, not the only title. But people criticize that don’t understand and that’s just ignorance.”

Maria Kanellis and the Divas Championship

This isn’t the first time this summer that Maria has jumped to defend the term “Diva”. After Charlotte used the term to demean Carmella on a recent episode of Smackdown, Maria issued a warning to the current Smackdown Women’s Champion.

“Real Diva. Be careful disparaging the women that fought for what you are getting,” Maria wrote on IG. “Experience is more of a bitch then entitlement ever will be.”

Maria continued to talk about the Divas era of Women’s Wrestling in WWE. She might be looking to build a future angle or she might be expressing her real opinion. As she is a “Paul Heyman Girl”, she’s likely doing both.

“We were in the trenches together in full makeup, dresses, and heels every day, every show,” she continued. “Still fighting with babies, careers, husbands, and a stigma. Is it better to fight for the system or the spot?”

The Shield’s Opponent And Ronda Rousey’s Match Announced For Super Show Down

This week’s episode of Monday Night Raw saw the Monster Among Men Braun Strowman aligning himself with Drew McIntyre and Dolph Ziggler to overcome the challenge of The Shield.

After this, WWE announced that this newly formed trio will face the Hounds Of Justice in a tag team match at the upcoming WWE Super Show Down from Australia.

Though this wasn’t the only match the company announced for the show during the day and they also revealed Ronda Rousey’s bout for the event.

They announced that the Raw Women’s Champion will be teaming up with the Bella Twins to face the trio of Ruby Riott, Sarah Logan and Liv Morgan known as the Riott squad.

These bouts are in addition to the previously announced match between Daniel Bryan and The Miz with the winner getting a WWE Championship opportunity sometime later.

After these announcements, the number of confirmed matches for the show has become 5. You can check out an updated Super Show Down match card below:

Punishment Martinez Added To “Over Budget Battle Royal” At All In

Ring of Honor Television Champion Punishment Martinez has been added to the “Over the Budget Battle Royal” at All In. The Battle Royal will take place on the “Zero Hour” preshow which airs on WGN.

Punishment Martinez Added To “Over Budget” Battle Royal

Martinez is the 11th wrestler to be confirmed for the match so far. The first set of participants was revealed on August 6th. The first announced names were Jordynne Grace, Moose, Rocky Romero, Colt Cabana, and Ethan Page.

Brian Cage, Billy Gunn, Jimmy Jacobs, and Mark Stunt were all confirmed by August 18th. Stunt was booked after a stand-out performance on Joey Janela’s “Lost in New York” pay-per-view earlier this month.

PWG wrestler Brandon Cutler was added to the match on August 23rd.

On a recent episode of “All Us”, Cody explained how he paid for the Over Budget Battle Royal.

“When you look at the ring for the entire show – you look at the canvas, you look at the aprons, the buckles, all the soft goods that make up a professional wrestling ring,” Cody said. “Know that I sold each and every one of them to various collectors so that I could afford the Over Budget Battle Royal.”
