Update on NXT UK, Where Will The Show Air?

WWE has been running tapings over the past few months for the NXT UK brand. With several nights of shows already in the bank the question now remains when and where will the show be airing?

Dave Meltzer of the Wrestling Observer recently threw out the idea of the NXT UK show being added to the Wednesday night Network schedule once the Mae Young Classic and Mixed Match Challenge ends.

Allegedly BT Sport had interest in running the show on their pay per view channel, however this would be extremely unlikely as WWE already has an ongoing relationship with Sky Sports. Reportedly Sky and WWE are already on rocky ground as WWE did not inform Sky Sports of the Network launch, this has been extremely detrimental to Sky’s PPV business as the Network is such better value for money.

The more interesting claim comes in the form of PROGRESS Wrestling’s Jim Smallman potentially running the UK brand. Meltzer writes that the promoter may take over the running of NXT UK “particularly if they do house show tours.” It was also confirmed that the PROGRESS and ICW tape libraries are owned by WWE and a date for airing on the network is coming “sooner rather than later.”

Update On Jeff Hardy & Matt’s Compound After Hurricane Florence

Despite having been written off SmackDown Live due to injuries sustained at Hell In A Cell, Jeff Hardy is still competing at WWE Live Events. Hardy worked a WWE Live Event in Oklahoma City this past Monday night. He competed in a 6-person tag team match, teaming with AJ Styles and R-Truth. They defeated the team of Samoa Joe, Randy Orton and the United States Champion, Shinsuke Nakamura. He is scheduled this weekend’s WWE live events

There is no indication as to how long the WWE will keep Hardy off of WWE programming as they continue to sell the severity of the injuries suffered. WWE previously provided a storyline update on Hardy, stating that he had complained of “severe abdominal pains backstage.” It was then reported that he had begun to cough up blood whilst in transit to a hospital.

Woken Warrior

His brother, Matt Hardy, has also been in the news recently, with what appeared to be a retirement announcement.

Matt’s WWE contract expires next March. His future opportunities with the company allegedly depend on the continued treatment of his lower back and pelvis. If the treatment goes well, there may be a chance he could return to in-ring competition within the WWE.

As if undergoing treatment wasn’t enough, he and his family are undergoing a major clean up effort at the Hardy Compound, thanks to Hurricane Florence.

Jeff Cobb On NJPW Long Beach Show & Potential Move To WWE

Jeff Cobb was recently a guest on X-Pac’s 12360 Podcast. It’s been an eventful year for the former Guam Olympian who revealed he’s about to hit the free agent market.

Cobb also said he is scheduled for the September 30th show in Long Beach for NJPW. “They haven’t announced me yet but I will be at the Long Beach show on the 30th,” Cobb said. “I’m not at liberty to say what else I’m doing with them the rest of the year but I will be hopefully more on New Japan World and all that fun stuff.”

Cobb, who wrestles as Matanza Cueto for Lucha Underground, said his contract with the promotion is up following this season.

“When the season is done, yes (finished with LU),” Cobb said. “I hope they don’t try to mess with me in the end but from what I was told going into season 4 is that I was good to go. I think if they try to get somebody else (to play Matanza Cueto), it wouldn’t be as good as the original.”

Would Jeff Cobb Go To WWE?

Cobb revealed he met with William Regal this weekend at PWG’s BOLA tournament. The annual 3-night tournament concluded on Sunday and will be available on DVD next month.

“So (Regal) watched my match with Darby Allin and I definitely picked his brain after. So there’s two guys backstage who I will pick their brains after my match, and it was William Regal and the other was Brian Kendrick.”

In terms of going to WWE, however, Cobb said he’d go if the offer was right but he’s happy with his current situation.

“If WWE came calling and all the stars aligned I’d definitely go,” Cobb said. “But right now I’m having a blast. I’m working 3 days a week and making a nice living.”

Cobb has also been seen on Ring of Honor television lately. He’s been disrupting matches in this year’s Top Prospect tournament.

NJPW Release English Documentary Series On YouTube

New Japan Pro Wrestling continue to cater to their ever growing Western fanbase. For those unfamiliar with the promotion’s 46-year-old history, NJPW is now releasing a series of mini-documentaries to YouTube.

Called ‘The Recount,’ the videos feature English NJPW commentator Kevin Kelly providing context and history. The documentaries are focused on getting new, English speaking fans up to speed on a number of key historical moments. So far, they have uploaded docs on the IWGP US title and the history of the Bullet Club.

In the past few weeks, the NJPW Global twitter account has been openly asking fans what kind of English content they would like to see, asking the Twitterverse, “It’s time to hear from you. What would you like to see from us in terms of new English content?”

English speaking NJPW fans were quick to respond to the question, sparking this response from NJPW:

This ‘Recount’ series follows on the heels of the recently released “California Dreaming” two-part series NJPW uploaded to YouTube. That series followed Katsuyori Shibata in his journey becoming the head coach of the NJPW LA Dojo.

With NJPW releasing even more English content, providing English commentary on the majority of their NJPW World shows, and actively engaging and responding to their burgeoning fanbase, it’s clear that NJPW has concrete plans of trying to further break and develop their brand in the West.

Smackdown Live Ratings Up Following Hell In a Cell

This week’s episode of WWE Smackdown saw a slight gain in ratings from last week. The post-Hell In a Cell episode reportedly drew a 2.281 million viewers, this is a 2.3% increase on last week’s 2.229 million. The headline segment of the show saw new Smackdown Live Women’s Champion Becky Lynch’s coronation. Top rated bouts between Lynch/Flair and AJ Styles/Samoa Joe on the Smackdown side of HIAC may have helped to drive the number up following the Network special.

Smackdown was also number 2 in the 18-49 demographic for the second week in a row falling again behind the Sons of Anarchy spin-off Mayans MC. The show was number 8 on cable for viewership Tuesday night. This put the show behind Hannity, Rachel Maddow Show, Tucker Carlson Tonight, Last Word, The Ingraham Angle, Special Report and The Five. Hannity drew a rating of 3.48 million viewers to top the night on cable.

Interestingly Monday Night RAW’s post Hell In a Cell show saw a loss of viewers compared to last week. The show drew 2.672 million viewers compared to last week’s 2.740 million. This was the lowest rated RAW since the July 9th episode…not great news heading out of a Network special event. The coming weeks before the Super Show-down event in Australia may well see an increase with anticipation in bouts such as Triple H vs The Undertaker.

Tyler Bate Talks PROGRESS Wembley Main Event

Inaugural WWE United Kingdom Champion Tyler Bate recently took part in an interview ahead of PROGRESS #HelloWembley. The UK star will be challenging WALTER for the PROGRESS World Championship in the main event of the show.

Bate same some interesting comments during an interview with PROGRESS co-owner Glen Joseph on the upcoming title match. Tyler stated that “I could easily outlast WALTER. What does he do? He throws a bunch of chops, I can take chops WALTER can chop me all day long to the point that I’ve got blood trickling down to my toes, I don’t care. It means that much to me. I’m gonna be running circles around WALTER. Not only am I gonna be running circles around WALTER but I’m gonna be throwing him corner to corner. I’m going to make him look like a novice in that ring. I’m gonna make him look like a child.”

This appears to be in response to some comments that WALTER made earlier this month. Speaking to DailyStar.co.uk, WALTER had some firm words for his opponent:

Tyler is a phenomenal athlete and pro wrestler. He is only 21-years-old and we all can only imagine what the future will have in store for him,” he praised, before pressing on. “I also respect his high ‘Pro Wrestling IQ.’ That being said, even though he is more mature than his age in the ring, I don’t think he is outside of it.”

Mark Henry Pitches Case For Randy Orton To Be WWE World Champion Again

WWE Hall Of Famer Mark Henry has expressed his interest in seeing Randy Orton be a World Champion in the WWE once again.

During a recent edition of Busted Open Radio on SiriusXM, the former WWE World Champion talked about Orton beating Jeff Hardy at Sunday’s (September 16, 2018) Hell in a Cell pay-per-view event in San Antonio, Texas at the AT&T Center on the WWE Network in a cell match.

This is when Henry explained his position and why he thinks WWE Chairman Vince McMahon should make Orton a champion again. Henry stated that Orton is one of his top favorite wrestlers of all-time and that he’s one of the most underrated guys of all time. He brought up how Orton’s accolades speak for himself and his talent speaks for himself. He thinks Orton’s heel character is getting meaner and more vicious as time goes on.

The WWE Legend pointed out that Orton started off very smooth and fluid, and usually guys like him don’t rise to the level of excellence that he’s rose to but he has done that and is looking forward to seeing him get his just due.

“Randy needs to be in that conversation for Universal Champion like roles. He’s that good,” Henry said.

Kenny Omega Teases Another NJPW Match Against Chris Jericho

IWGP Heavyweight Champion Kenny Omega recently spoke to NJPW1972 on a variety of subjects. One of the more interesting aspects of the interview focused on Omega’s match against Pentagon/Penta El Zero at ALL IN.

When asked about his opponent from the show Omega quipped “And that was kinda the beauty of the show that there are these we would call them diamonds in the rough where there are there talented people these stars waiting to be discovered and he’s one of them and we are happy to show that he can be not only famous in Mexico but also be famous in America, but he could be famous all over the world of course it was just a special match, but we gave a performance of even an IWGP champion defense.

Omega then moved on to the appearance of Jericho after the match. The IWGP Intercontinental Champion Jericho appeared dressed as Pentagon and hit his Codebreaker move on ‘The Cleaner.’ Omega made the comment that “It’s one of those situations where there was no story, what was the meaning? It’s one of those situations where he can’t let it go. He wants his revenge. He wants to be the winner. He somehow feels as if he is above me. But what I want him to remember that he has a responsibility as Intercontinental champion. So, we’re in different worlds but I get the feeling that somehow, somewhere we’ll meet again and of course in a tag format that will be on the Jericho cruise.”

Do you want to see another Omega vs Jericho match? Let us know in the comments

WALTER Announced for Rev Pro/NJPW Global Wars 2018

Revolution Pro (Rev Pro) has announced the next bout for their ‘Global Wars’ event on October 14th. EVIL and SANADA from Los Ingobernables de Japon will be taking on WALTER and Timothy Thatcher of Ringkampf.

WALTER has recently been heavily linked with a move to WWE. The Austrian powerhouse is being looked at for an NXT UK position. Sporadic appearances over in Full Sail and at certain Takeover events are also being considered.

If you’ve never heard of WALTER then he is certainly a performer that should be on your radar. The Austrian powerhouse is dominating the Tag and Heavyweight divisions in wXw, PROGRESS and PWG and he is now being slated as a future WWE/NXT signee. Considered the de-facto leader of the Ringkampf stable (alongside Timothy Thatcher and previously NXT roster member Axel Dieter Jr) WALTER has a ton of potential on the world stage and has already garnered critical praise from the likes of Dave Meltzer, who gave his PWG All-Star Weekend bout against Zack Sabre Jr from October 2017 a 5 star rating.

Report: Rey Mysterio Signs With WWE

Rey Mysterio has signed a new 2-year deal with WWE, according to a report at PWInsider This has been an expected move for months. Now that both sides have put pen to paper, the former WWE Champion’s television return should be imminent.

It was noted in the report that Mysterio was pushing for an 18-month contract. However, WWE pushed for the 2-year deal that they ultimately agreed to. A clause in the contract allows him to “give notice” to WWE at the 18-month mark. Now that Rey Mysterio is officially back on the WWE roster, creative can begin planning how to write him back into storylines.

Rey Mysterio has made a few appearances for WWE this year. He made a surprise appearance in the Royal Rumble in January He was also at April’s Greatest Royal Rumble from Saudi Arabia in April. He is featured as a pre-order bonus character for the upcoming WWE 2K19 video game. This all-but-guaranteed he would be returning before the October 9th release date.

Mysterio made appearances on several non-WWE shows this year, including New Japan Pro Wrestling’s Dominion event in June and All In on September 1st.

Earlier this week, WWE teased a Rey Mysterio vs. AJ Styles ‘dream match’ for the SmackDown 1,000 special on October 6th. Mysterio has huge name appeal and he will almost certainly be appearing at WWE Crown Jewel on November 2nd from Saudi Arabia.

Who do you want to see Rey Mysterio feud with in WWE this year?

WWE Releases Mahabali Shera

Former Impact Wrestling star Mahabali Shera has been released from WWE. The 27-year-old had been with the company since February. While Shera competed on the NXT live tour schedule, he never made it onto WWE programming. He had been wrestling under the name Amanpreet Singh while in NXT. His last match with the company was a loss to Brennan Wiliams on the September 6th house show from the National Guard Armory in Crystal River, Florida, USA.

Shera was also the last ever Heavyweight Champion for Ring Ka King, the TNA run promotion in India which ran in 2012. He was with TNA/Impact from 2011 until late last year when he quietly left the company.

Mahabali Shera Wrestling Career

Not much is known about Shera’s in-ring career before TNA discovered him in 2011. He was immediately placed in the thick of things when he debuted for the company in late 2011.

Shera’s first-ever officially recognized match was a loss to Scott Steiner from the Ring Ka King tapings on December 18th, 2011. A match he would film later the same day, a victory over Nick Dinsmore (Eugene), would actually air first, however. He would defeat Nick Aldis for the Ring Ka King title in early 2012. At the time, Aldis was wrestling as Sir Brutus Magnus.

“What kind of match will it be?” MLW’s event page asks. “Nobody will know until that night when a wheel containing 11 different specialty matches will be spun.”

The following gimmick matches will be on the wheel:

The 3rd option of a “Coal Miner’s Glove Match” is what was landed on for the first-ever Spin The Wheel, Make A Deal match between Jake “the Snake” Roberts and Sting. The match took place in WCW at Halloween Havoc 1993. Roberts left the promotion shortly after.

These two former Knockouts Champions will clash inside a WWE ring tonight. Kay once won the Knockouts Championship from Yim in a triple threat match also involving Gail Kim. That match took place at Slammiversary in 2016.

They’ve only met in single’s action once before, however. That was on an episode of Xplosion when Yim defeated Kay in October of 2016. Yim wrestled in TNA as Jade and Kay as Sienna.

Kaitlyn vs Kavita Devi

Former Divas Champion, Kaitlyn returns to the ring tonight. She made an abrupt exit from the business 4 years ago despite only being 27 at the time. Kaitlyn got back into wrestling earlier this year in preparation for the tournament. She’ll be in tough tonight with the gigantic Kavita Devi though, one of WWE’s top prospects from India.

Toni Storm vs Jinny

It is Australia vs England in this match as Toni Storm takes Jinny. With the NXT United Kingdom brand starting to take shape, it seems as though these two will be near or at the top of the women’s division.

This match will be the 10th time the two have faced each other in single’s action. Jinny leads the series 5-4 but Storm has had the upper hand the one previous time they met in a WWE ring in 2017. Storm defeated Jinny at the WrestleMania Axxess show last year.

Karen Q vs Xia Li

Li enters the tournament for the second time. She was knocked out of the 1st round last year by the highly-touted Mercedes Martinez. Tonight the martial arts expert from China will face Karen Q, a grizzled veteran of the North American scene. She’s recently been competing in Ring of Honor’s Women of Honor division.
