6 Takeaways From WWE RAW (5/27)

The May 27th, 2019 episode of WWE RAW aired live from Sprint Center in Kansas City, MO. Here are 6 takeaways from this week’s show:

Brock Lesnar Danced Around

WWE Champion Kofi Kingston kicked off this week’s show. Kingston said that Kevin Owens re-injured Big E’s knee when he attacked him on SmackDown. He then vowed to defeat Dolph Ziggler at Super ShowDown. Kingston demanded that Brock Lesnar cash in his MITB contract on him now but Universal Champion Seth Rollins came down to the ring instead.

Rollins stated that he was better than Brock Lesnar and added that he liked where Kofi’s head is at. Seth shouted that he wants Brock to come out here now and made his decision. Lesnar came out with a giant smile on his face and dance music blared. Brock hilariously danced around with the briefcase while Seth and Kofi stared at him.

Kofi and Rollins’ music played as Brock continued to dance. Rollins got pissed off and exited the ring as Heyman grabbed the microphone. Heyman claimed that Rollins ruined the Brock Party and the crowd booed. Paul scolded the crowd and shouted that they should blame Seth Rollins. Heyman and Lesnar then left the ring and made their way backstage.

Dolph Ziggler Attacked Kofi Again

Dolph Ziggler once again attacked Kofi Kingston from behind. Dolph planted Kofi with the Zig Zag on the steel ramp and then grabbed a chair from the timekeeper’s area. Xavier Woods attacked Ziggler and Dolph retreated through the crowd.

When RAW returned from a commercial break, Dolph Ziggler was once again battling with Xavier Woods. Ziggler hit Woods with the steel chair before Kingston ran down to the ring with a chair. Ziggler once again retreated through the crowd as RAW went to a break.

When RAW returned again, Dolph Ziggler was on the entrance ramp this time with a microphone. Ziggler stated that he admired Kofi Kingston and knows how good he is. Dolph wondered what will happen when Ziggler takes the title away from Kofi and claimed that he will take his WWE Championship at Super ShowDown.

The first 40 minutes of RAW did not include a match. Instead, Brock Lesnar danced around and Dolph Ziggler cut the same promo he did last week.

Shane McMahon Defeated Roman’s Cousin In The First Match Of The Night

Shane McMahon and Drew McIntyre came down to the ring. Shane cut a promo on Roman Reigns and called him disrespectful for striking Vince McMahon.

He brought up Roman’s relatives in the wrestling business and brought up the Wild Samoans, Afa and Sika (Roman’s father). Shane claimed that Vince McMahon cleaned up a lot of Afa and Sika’s mistakes as the crowd sat in silence. RAW went to another commercial break as Shane said that he was going to compete tonight.

Shane was set to face Lance Anoa’i but McIntyre attacked Reigns’ cousin before the match. Drew rolled Lance into the ring as the crowd started to chant “this is awful!”. Shane applied a Triangle submission for the victory.

After the match, Shane and Drew continued the beat down on Lance as Shane claimed that the biggest mistake Sika ever made was spawning Roman Reigns. Roman finally came down to the ring for the save and hit Drew with a Superman Punch. Reigns went to Spear Shane but McIntyre dragged him out of the ring.

This was the only match of the first hour of RAW and it obviously was terrible. There were some “AEW!” chants during this segment but the loudest chant was “this is awful!”. The feud between Reigns and Shane isn’t interesting at all.

Brock Lesnar Was Unaware That He Has A Year To Cash In

Brock Lesnar and Paul Heyman once again came down to the ring to start off the second hour of RAW. Heyman noted that a referee was in the ring because the time has come for Lesnar to announce which champion he wants to face.

Universal Champion Seth Rollins interrupted again and marched down to the ring. Rollins said that Lesnar was a joke and that he can stomp Brock’s face into the mat again here tonight. Rollins accused Lesnar of being a coward and challenged him to cash in his contract.

Heyman started reading the contract and Lesnar stopped him. Brock apparently had no idea that he has a year to cash in and started shouting at Paul. Lesnar grabbed the microphone and laughed that he had an entire year to make the decision. Lesnar told Rollins “screw you!” and left the ring.

Baron Corbin Will Face Seth Rollins At Super ShowDown For The Universal Championship

Seth Rollins vs. Baron Corbin
Seth Rollins vs. Baron Corbin

Braun Strowman, The Miz, Bobby Lashley, and Baron Corbin competed in a Fatal 4-Way Elimination Match. The winner of the match would go on to face Seth Rollins for the Universal Championship at Super ShowDown. Baron Corbin replaced AJ Styles in this match due to injury. Corbin also attacked Styles tonight during a backstage interview.

Strowman and Lashley teamed up at the beginning of the match and sent Strowman to the outside. Lashley and Corbin beat The Miz down for a bit and then Braun got back into the ring. Strowman Powerbombed Lashley and Corbin as they delivered a Superplex to The Miz. Braun followed that up with a double Dropkick and Bobby fell out of the ring. Lashley and Corbin took back control and Suplexed Strowman on the entrance ramp.

Corbin planted Miz with Deep Six and went for the cover but Miz kicked out at two. Strowman got back into the ring and hit Corbin and Lashley with a Splash in the corner of the ring. Strowman threw Lashley into the audience and followed him out there. Back in the ring, Corbin hit Miz with End of Days for the pinfall victory. Seth Rollins will now defend the Universal Championship against Baron Corbin at Super ShowDown.

The idea that Strowman and Lashley would just battle through the crowd and forget about a possible title shot is idiotic to me. Corbin versus Rollins sounds like a standard RAW match. I’m still assuming that Lesnar will play a factor in this match, otherwise, that is a bland title match for a PPV that WWE is advertising as equivalent to WrestleMania.

Seth Rollins Defeated Sami Zayn

WWE unveiled a new segment called “The Electric Chair” and it was hosted by Corey Graves. An electric chair was placed in the ring and Sami Zayn took a seat. Several members of the WWE Universe asked Sami questions and Zayn poked fun at each of them.

A fan named Thomas asked Sami why he hasn’t won the Universal Championship yet. Zayn claimed that he could win the Universal Championship whenever he wants, he is just not interested in that right now. Zayn then stated that people could have asked him about AEW and the crowd broke out in an AEW chant.

Seth Rollins interrupted a segment for the third time tonight and came down to the ring. Rollins chased Zayn out of the ring and then threw the electric chair out of the ring. Zayn and Rollins then had a match as Brock Lesnar was shown watching backstage.

Sami spent the beginning of the match rolling out of the ring several times and trying to avoid Rollins. Seth caught him with a Clothesline and brought Zayn back into the ring. Sami took control and booted Seth in the face several times.

Rollins knocked Sami out of the ring and went after him. Zayn shoved Rollins into the ring post as RAW went to a break. When RAW returned, Sami was back in control of the match and slapped Rollins in the face a couple of times. Rollins battled back with a Slingblade and then a Blockbuster off the second rope.

Zayn rolled out of the ring and Rollins hit him with a Suicide Dive. Seth connected with another Suicide Dive and Rollins tweaked his knee during the landing. Back in the ring, Rollins went for a Powerbomb but Rollins’ knee gave out. Sami capitalized with a DDT for a near fall.

Rollins tripped up Sami and hit him with a Superkick. Rollins went for The Stomp but Zayn dodged it and locked in the Figure Four. Rollins reversed it and eventually broke the hold. Zayn got up first but Rollins connected with an Enziguri. Sami responded with a Blue Thunder Bomb for a two count.

Zayn perched Rollins up on the top rope but Rollins sent him to the canvas with a headbutt. Rollins went for a Frog Splash but Sami got his knees up at the last moment. Seth and Sami traded shots and Rollins sent him out of the ring. Rollins connected with The Stomp as Sami got back into the ring. Rollins hit another Stomp for the pinfall victory.

This week’s episode of RAW was not a good show at all. Cesaro and Ricochet put on a great match, but Ricochet picked up the victory. Cesaro defeated Ricochet previously, thus the two Superstars are in exactly the same spot they were before the rivalry started. Women’s Tag Team Champions The IIConics were once again pinned on television.

The first hour of RAW was a train wreck and the second hour started off with yet another Brock Lesnar segment. The storyline between Dolph Ziggler and Kofi Kingston is already boring because we’ve seen Dolph Ziggler in this position countless times. I was hoping to see WWE put on a great show tonight in response to Double or Nothing. Unfortunately, it was just another generic episode of RAW.

Seth Rollins vs. Baron Corbin Set For WWE Super ShowDown

A new match has been announced for the upcoming WWE Super ShowDown PPV, which is WWE Universal Champion Seth Rollins vs. Baron Corbin.

This match was booked on Monday’s RAW where Corbin beat Braun Strowman, Bobby Lashley, and The Miz in a Fatal Four-Way Elimination Match to determine who will be the next in line for the WWE Universal Title.

Although there was speculation that Brock Lesnar would cash-in his Money in the Bank briefcase for a match at this show, he chose not to do so as he noted in a segment that he can wait a year to do so.

WWE presents the Super ShowDown pay-per-view event on Friday, June 7th, 2019 in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia at the King Abdullah Sports City Stadium that will air on the WWE Network at 2PM ET/11 AM PT.

This marks the third show in WWE’s 10-year deal with the Saudi General Sports Authority. WWE will be announcing more matches for this show in the coming weeks. Here is the updated card:

Rey Mysterio To Vacate WWE United States Title

WWE has addressed the situation involving the United States Title.

On Monday’s episode of RAW, it was announced that Rey Mysterio will vacate the title due to injury next week on the flagship show of the company. Samoa Joe would then come out to the announce table where he would cut a promo about how he will reclaim the title.

The reason that the title will become vacant is due to Mysterio suffering an injury during his match against Samoa Joe where he won the title at the WWE Money In The Bank pay-per-view event in Hartford, CT.

Mysterio commented on the injury that he suffered at the end of the match in a recent post on his official Instagram account where he noted that he separated an acromioclavicular joint in his shoulder.

It’s a shame that Mysterio suffered an injury in this match as it was a memorable night for the future WWE Hall of Famer as he became a Grand Slam Champion.

WWE holds next week’s episode of RAW in Austin, Texas at the Frank Erwin Center. This will be an important episode as it will serve as the go-home show for the Super ShowDown pay-per-view event.

WWE Announces Injury To AJ Styles

Former WWE Champion AJ Styles is dealing with an injury. During Monday’s episode of RAW, WWE announced the news.

Later in the show, Styles did a backstage interview where he noted he felt a pop in his lower back during his match at Money In The Bank and he doesn’t know when he can return to action until further tests are done. He was then attacked by Baron Corbin.

PWinsider.com reported shortly after the announcement that “in asking around we are told he is “banged up” but beyond that, there is no word on the nature of his injury.” We hope to have a further update shortly.

Styles was originally advertised to compete against Braun Strowman, Bobby Lashley, and The Miz in a Fatal Four-Way Elimination Match to determine who will be the next in line for the WWE Universal Title. Baron Corbin replaced him in this contest.

Just last week on RAW, WWE appeared to start a program between Styles and Corbin as Corbin slapped Styles. It should be noted that WWE’s events page on their official website doesn’t have him advertised for any TV or live events starting this week until the 6/27 show in Singapore.

He is advertised to work the Super Showdown and Stomping Grounds events. Styles hasn’t worked a match since losing to Universal Champion Seth Rollins at the WWE Money In The Bank pay-per-view event in Hartford, CT.

This feud comes after Styles was moved from SmackDown Live after having a successful run as the top star on the blue brand to RAW.

Becky Lynch Takes Shot At WWE Over Marathon PPV’s

WWE RAW Women’s Champion Becky Lynch made an interesting comment through the power of social media.

It all started when she was promoting her appearance for a signing in San Antonio Texas. It was announced that she decided to be at the signing for an extra hour and a half.

This was when she took a shot at WWE for the length of their pay-per-view events by stating that the 6-hour length of her appearance is a short pay-per-view by WWE standards. You can see her tweet here:

https://twitter.com/BeckyLynchWWE/status/1133050037259395074

Since the launch of WWE’s streaming service, WWE Network, the length of these pay-per-view events have been extended. The big four shows – Royal Rumble, WrestleMania, Survivor Series, and SummerSlam – can last anywhere from four to six hours long. While their B-list shows are four hours long.

The company does this to tout during their quarterly revenue conference calls with their investors about how many hours of content that fans watch on the WWE Network.

Lynch is expected to make her next title defense as WWE RAW Women’s Champion at the Stomping Grounds pay-per-view event that takes place on Sunday, June 23.

Brock and Paul Heyman come out to the ring, and Brock’s briefcase is done up like a boombox. Brock has different entrance music tonight and he dances into the ring. Drew hits a belly to belly overhead suplex on Lance at ringside. Shane tells Drew to relax, but Drew pulls of Lance’s shirt and chops him across the chest. Drew throws Lance in the ring, then Shane orders the ref to ring the opening bell. The bell sounds and Shane starts teeing off on Lance with strikes. Heyman mentions that Brock has one year to make his challenge, and Brock is not happy. Brock takes the contract and smacks Paul across the face with it, and they argue. Brock takes the mic from Paul and tells Rollins he has a whole year to decide, so “screw you” Seth Rollins. Brock and Heyman leave and head to the back.

The Miz vs. Braun Strowman vs. Baron Corbin vs. Bobby Lashley: The winner of this elimination match gets a Universal Title shot at Super Show Down. The opening bell sounds, and Lashley and Strowman clear the ring early on. Lashley and Strowman go at it now and trade shoulder tackle attempts. The Miz and Corbin come back in, and Corbin suplexes Miz. Corbin works over Miz on the turnbuckle, and Lashley gets the upper hand against Strowman on the ringside floor. Back in the ring, Lashley and Corbin look for a double superplex on Miz in the corner. Strowman runs in the ring and turns it into a powerbomb/superplex pyramid, and everyone crashes down to the mat. Strowman controls the pace now and starts tackling everyone at ringside. Back in the ring, Lashley hits a stalling vertical suplex on Miz. Lashley misses a shot in the corner and Miz fights back with strikes. Miz hits some running kicks and a running clothesline on Lashley in the corner. Corbin comes in and hits the Deep Six on Miz for a two count. Strowman comes in and hits several running splashes on Corbin and Lashley in opposite corners of the ring. Bray asks if he liked his surprise, and he talks about the mask giving him confidence to be anything. The witch puppet starts calling Bray a sicko, and Bray insists he’s not. Bray dresses up like a doctor and calls her a bully. She tells Bray to let her rest, but Bray says he will never let her rest, and she says she’s tired of being stuck in this limbo. Bray does the limbo under a pole, and tells everyone to let him in.

– Sami Zayn comes out to the ring for his new segment, “The Electric Chair.” There’s a wooden chair with straps in the ring, and Cole says Sami is going to answer any and all questions. Corey Graves joins Sami in the ring, and apparently he will be hosting the segment, where Sami will take “any and all” questions from the WWE Universe, no matter what it is. Charly Caruso is in the crowd taking questions from fans. The first fan asks when is Sami’s retirement date, and Sami asks the fan if his father and mother are related, since they are in Kansas City. The second question is from a little kid who asks if he misses his team in the Mixed Match Challenge. Sami asks where her parents are, and says their kid has no manners and her parents should be ashamed. Sami asks if she’s asking about Becky, or if she’s really asking about Seth Rollins. The next fan asks what it’s like when Braun Strowman destroys him, and Sami says he wants to jump over the barricade and beat up the fan, but he won’t because they’re in America and he would get sued. Sami says since the fan his American his healthcare probably sucks. Sami complains about the quality of the questions. The next fan asks why Sami hasn’t won the Universal Championship yet. Sami says that’s a dumb question, and he could win the Universal Title any time he wants, but he’s more interested in calling out the fans. Sami says the fans can ask about anything, even AEW. Seth Rollins comes out to interrupt. Sami and Graves leave the ring, and Rollins throws the chair out to ringside and it breaks.

Sami Zayn vs. Seth Rollins: Zayn avoids engaging Rollins in the opening moments, until Rollins drops him with an elbow to the face. Rollins continues the offense with chops to the chest, then he takes Sami out to ringside and slams him against the barricade. Back in the ring, Sami turns it around and tries to keep Rollins grounded. Rollins fights up and knocks Sami outside with a running knee to the face. Back in the ring, they trade blows until Rollins drops Zayn with a superkick. Rollins follows up with the Sling Blade, and then a boot to the face. Rollins then hits a Blockbuster off the turnbuckle, but Sami rolls outside so he can’t be pinned. Rollins hits two suicide dives on Sami at ringside. Rollins is selling a knee injury now. Back in the ring, Rollins looks for a powerbomb, but Sami escapes and hits a DDT. Rollins comes back with a superkick on Zayn. Rollins misses a curb stomp attempt, and Zayn applies a Figure Four leg lock on Rollins. Rollins escapes, but he misses a running knee strike attempt, and Zayn counters with the Blue Thunder Bomb for a two count. Sami brings Rollins up top, but Rollins knocks Sami down. Rollins goes for a frogsplash, but Sami gets his knees up to block it. Rollins fights back and hits the Curb Stomp. Rollins covers for the three count.

Winner: Seth Rollins

– Rollins celebrates after the match and raises his Universal Title belt as RAW goes off the air.

Paul Heyman Discusses Potentially Taking Over WWE SmackDown Creative

Paul Heyman addresses potentially taking over the creative end of WWE SmackDown Live.

This idea came about earlier this month when WWE Hall of Famer Bully Ray made it known that Heyman should take over as head writer of the show when it airs on FOX in October.

Heyman spoke with ComicBook.com about a wide range of topics including this possibility. While he didn’t answer the question, he did seem somewhat interested in a role like that.

“I have interest in anything that serves the product.” He would note whether that’s performing with Brock Lesnar, or producing Lesnar, or working with Ronda Rousey. He would add that includes any of the new talents that are about to explode in 2019 and 2020.

“I serve at the pleasure of the WWE audience and so that everyone knows I’m not just paying lip services with that statement. Please note, I didn’t give the politically correct, public relations statement of ‘I serve at the pleasure of the WWE Universe.’ I meant what I said, I serve at the behest and the pleasure of the WWE audience.”

Heyman noted that anything he can do to deliver to fans or a better product that “would be a more forward-thinking presentation, a more innovative approach to what WWE should be moving forward then that’s what I’m interested in being involved in.”

Maria & Mike Kanellis’ WWE Contracts Set To Expire Soon

Maria Kanellis got fans talking and speculating about the future of her and husband Mike Kanellis with WWE.

It all started when she brought up how their contracts were up in three weeks only to respond to a fan by stating that she was referring to their gym memberships.

It turns out that is not technically the case. PWInsider reports that Maria was actually referring to their WWE contracts. As of this writing, there is no word yet on if they will re-sign with the company.

With the launch of AEW and getting a weekly television deal with TNT that will kick off later this year, WWE has been making big money offers to talent to keep them under contract.

Back in January, it was reported that the married couple had asked for WWE officials to release them from their contracts. At the time, it was reported that they’ve been unhappy with the WWE due to the way they’ve been used.

Maria and Mike made their debut as a couple on WWE television at the Money in the Bank pay-per-view event in 2017. Around the time of their reported demand for a release, they were paired on 205 Live where they have been used more.

NJPW GM Clarifies Promotion’s Relationship With AEW

AEW’s Chris Jericho and Jon Moxley are both set to take part in NJPW events in early June. NJPW GM, Michael Craven recently stated there is no talent-sharing agreement between his promotion and AEW, however.

“New Japan and Jon Moxley came to terms on an agreement some time ago, completely independently of All Elite,” Craven said in a statement to SI.com’s Justin Barrasso. “Our understanding is that he is free to wrestle in Japan. We wish AEW well, but have no working relationship as of now.”

Chris Jericho will face Kazuchika Okada at NJPW Dominion on June 9th. Jon Moxley is set to debut for the promotion on June 5th at the finals of the Best of the Super Juniors 26 tournament.

Tony Khan on Jon Moxley’s Contract

AEW’s Tony Khan stated over the weekend that while Moxley is full-time to his promotion, the former Dean Ambrose is also able to work for some independents as well as international promotions.

“He is a multi-year contract, he will be on a full-time deal,” Khan said. “When we go weekly, he’s going to be full-time. Same as some of the guys, especially when the schedule is light, I’m open to him working some international and indie dates. He is full-time with us, domestically, essentially he’s our guy.’”

Jon Moxley to NJPW

NJPW confirmed earlier today that Moxley is the man behind the “Time’s Up” videos targetting Juice Robinson.

Jon Moxley: “This Is What You Call A Paradigm Shift”

Jon Moxley debuted for AEW Saturday night at Double or Nothing. Following the event, Moxley cut a promo stating it was time the pro-wrestling industry was given a facelift.

“One day, they will all come to my funeral just to make sure I stay dead, but today is not that day,” Moxley said. “I’m alive! My heart is still beating and I’m breathing fresh air for the first time in a long time.”

AEW Tweeted out the below video of Moxley’s promo:

https://twitter.com/AEWrestling/status/1132859918338236418

Jon Moxley in AEW

“My name is Jon Moxley and I am on a mission to reclaim my soul. And I’m not the only who thinks, ‘You know it’s about time this industry got a facelift.’ So make no mistake about it, this is an official declaration of war against anybody who wants to get in my way or anybody who stands in AEW’s way.”

Moxley’s in-ring debut for AEW was announced for Fyter Fest on June 29th.

“We’re on a mission to knock the pillars of this industry on their ass,” Moxley continued. “We ain’t reading history books anymore, we’re writing them. This is what you call a paradigm shift.”

Jon Moxley to NJPW

Earlier today, NJPW confirmed that Moxley is also the man behind the videos targeting Juice Robinson in NJPW.

He will make his debut for NJPW on June 5th during the finals of the Best of the Super Juniors tournament.

Road Dogg Now Working At NXT

“Road Dogg” Brian James is now working for NXT full-time and has reported to the Performance Center in Orlando, FL.

The WWE Hall of Famer made headlines shortly before WrestleMania 35 when he stepped down as the head writer of SmackDown Live. At the time, Dave Meltzer commented on the situation on Wrestling Observer Radio.

“Brian James has – what I was told – stepped down as co-head writer of Smackdown.” Meltzer added, “I don’t know anything more as to why but that happened.”

The following day, Pro Wrestling Sheet reported the decision for James to leave SmackDown was mutual between he and WWE. “We’re told WWE wants to keep his position flexible at this time and use him as a utility player, so they can see where he’d fit best going forward.”

Road Dogg has been working for WWE behind the scenes in a production and creative capacity since 2014.

Lucha Bros vs Young Bucks Rematch Booked For AAA

Even though the Young Bucks just successfully defended the AAA tag team championships against the Lucha Brothers Saturday night in Las Vegas, they will once again have to face their rivals on June 16th for AAA in Mexico.

The Lucha Libre promotion posted the following to announce that the Young Bucks and Lucha Brothers will face each other again for the titles at Verano de Escándalo.

Lucha Bros Banged Up Following Double or Nothing

The Lucha Brothers were said to be a little banged up following Double or Nothing on Saturday. They were scheduled to travel to Houston for an event the following day but were forced to cancel. Lucha promotion Lucha Empire sent out the following to announce the event had to be canceled as a result.

Young Bucks on AEW Creative Team

The Young Bucks recently spoke to media ahead of Double or Nothing and clarified what the creative team in AEW is and who is on it.

“The creative team is essentially a group chat that goes 24 hours a day, seven days a week,” Matt Jackson said. “Some people in the group think a bit more traditionally, while others think super outside the box. We always come to some sort of agreement, somewhere in the middle. It’s a recipe that works. The process has been both challenging and incredibly rewarding.”

Jon Moxley To Debut For NJPW On June 5th

Jon Moxley is headed to New Japan Pro Wrestling. The former Dean Ambrose was revealed earlier this morning as the mystery person behind the videos targeting Juice Robinson.

NJPW has since announced that Moxley will make his debut for the promotion on June 5th, the final night of the Best of the Super Juniors tournament.

Moxley sent the following out on Twitter early Monday morning:

https://twitter.com/JonMoxley/status/1132868564132741120

Jon Moxley to NJPW

Shortly after Moxley posted the video, NJPW sent out a press release.

“Jon Moxley will be appearing in Ryogoku Sumo Hall June 5 with apparent designs on IWGP US Heavyweight champion, Juice Robinson. Moxley previously saw worldwide fame as a WWE ‘Grand Slam’ Champion and member of top flight faction The Shield under the name Dean Ambrose,” the release reads.

Jon Moxley To Wrestle Pentagon

Moxley is also scheduled to wrestle Pentagon in a match for NorthEast Wrestling in Poughkeepsie, New York on August 16th. The event will take place just 15 days before AEW’s return to PPV on August 31st with All Out in Chicago.

Dustin Rhodes, Renee Young, Jerry Lawler and more are also scheduled for the event.

Tony Khan Says There Will “Definitely” Be An AEW PPV in UK

After taking over the wrestling world by storm on Saturday with their successful Double or Nothing event in Las Vegas, All Elite Wrestling says they have similar plans for the United Kingdom.

talkSPORT caught up with SoCal Uncensored ahead of the event and asked them about AEW’s plans for UK.

“I think when you look at who is involved and you look at somebody like a Tony Khan who has heavy ties to the UK and London specifically, I think that it is a foregone conclusion,” Kazarian said. “And one thing that we want to do is be different. And to be different, you take your product to the people. You don’t necessarily make the people come to you. You take it to where the fans are.”

“We’d love to do a Starrcast, I’d love to do a cigar event, a jam session; let’s do everything we’re doing over here in Vegas and do it in the UK. And I think it will happen.”

talksSPORT’s Alex McCarthy also went straight to Tony Khan after the event for a word who assured them there will “definitely” be a UK PPV. The venue or the date has not been set yet but the important thing we need to know is that it will happen.

It would only make sense for the company to broaden their horizons by making their presence felt on a different continent. And with Khan spending a lot of time in London with Fulham F.C., it only makes sense for the company to eventually visit the islands.

Cody Comments On AEW Diversity, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez Responds

Following last night’s Double or Nothing PPV from Las Vegas, Cody made some comments about how his marriage has impacted his view of diversity. Today, a notable politician has responded to Cody’s comments.

“I’m in an interracial marriage, and I’ve learned a lot that I would have never known,” Cody said. “One time, I told Brandi, I told her that ‘I don’t see color.’ And she said, ‘Well, then you don’t see my experience.’ And I thought, ‘Oh, you’re right. I can’t just say that.’ You need to be able to see that experience and at least understand it.”

U.S. Representative for New York’s 14th congressional district, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez responded to Cody’s comments.

AOC did not offer comment on Cody’s brothers’ blood still being in his hair hours after his match had ended.

Cody Comments On Diversity in AEW

Cody offered further comment on diversity in AEW.

“The old territory system of just one, that’s out. The best wrestlers are going to field the game and that’s a very diverse profile. I’m really proud of it. We’re gonna promote them as wrestlers. We’re not gonna make it a PR element for us. And I’m really proud of that because it’s about the wrestling.”

“We’re going to promote them as wrestlers. That’s all the elements of diversity. We’re not going to make it a PR element for us, and that I’m really proud of. It’s just about the wrestlers.”

Lucha Bros Injured At AEW Double or Nothing

Pentagon and Fenix are said to be suffering injuries following AEW Double or Nothing last night. Lucha Libre promotion Lucha Empire was forced to cancel a scheduled event for today in Houston that was to feature the tag team. The promotion noted that Pentagon and Fenix were banged-up following Double or Nothing and not able to travel.

  • 6 Takeaways From AEW Double Or Nothing

The promotion posted the following to their social media accounts:

There is no word on the nature or extent of their injuries.

Lucha Bros AEW

The Lucha Bros are likely finishing up with Impact Wrestling and MLW in the near future. It was reported recently that they will be exclusive to AEW in the United States while still working with AAA in Mexico.

In Impact, Pentagon and Fenix dropped the tag titles back to Santana and Ortiz at the Rebellion PPV in Toronto. The Lucha Bros won and lost the AAA Tag team championships in short order at Rey de Reyes in March. The Young Bucks appeared unannounced shortly after Pentagon and Fenix won the titles which led to an impromptu match that the Bucks then won.

Cody Says AEW Won’t Do Monthly PPVs

Cody says that All Elite Wrestling won’t do monthly PPVs. He also said not every show will be 4-5 hours long as Double or Nothing was.

Cody commented on future PPVs during the post-event scrum last night.

”So I think we’ll probably look at Double or Nothing and All Out as tentpole events,” Cody said. “And there may be another one. We’re not going to do a pay-per-view every month.”

He also commented on the price tag associated with the PPV.

“I realize it was $50 and to ask people to part with their money you gotta make sure it’s worth it,” he continued. “So we’re going to be… not every show is going to be four or five hours either. TV, I’ve kind of indicated with you, is a two hour TV broadcast.”

Cody on Future AEW Shows

During an interview with Chris Van Vliet, Cody confirmed the weekly TV show will be 2-hours.

“It’s really likely the show is going to be 2 hours. That’s the sweet spot. In terms of the schedule we’ll find out probably within the next few months for sure and it will be in a great spot to be in prime time on TNT, they’ve really set us up,” Cody said.

Roman Reigns Talks Shane McMahon Feud, Introduction Of Wild Card Rule

Roman Reigns spoke with Phillip Martinez of Newsweek to promote his match against Shane McMahon at the Super ShowDown event.

During this interview, he spoke about his feud with Shane, which is where he noted that he loves it and that there is a long connection with fans and Shane.

“He may have thrown the party but he’s the biggest douche in the room. That’s what’s cool, that character and we’re able to do that and we’re able to connect with that. But for me it’s fun because I did this, I grinded for mine.”

Reigns continued by bringing up how this is how he pays the bills and provides for his family. He added that it’s a completely different character that he’s going up against right now, which is cool.

With the introduction of the Wild Card Rule, the former Universal Champion has been working both RAW and SmackDown TV events. It’s not been an easy schedule to do but he does it.

“It’s not easy,” Reigns confirmed. “It’s tough work. It takes special people to do this kind of stuff. I’m cut from a different fabric. I’ve always been someone who can handle this type of workload. To be honest, I feel good.”

Reigns continued by stating that his role is to help the team and if that is what’s asked of him then “I’ll do everything to the best of my ability to get the job done.”

Cody Outlasted Dustin In An Epic Match

Cody Dustin
Cody vs. Dustin

Cody battled Dustin Rhodes tonight at Double or Nothing.

The crowd chanted “Dusty” before the match started and then transitioned into a “this is awesome!” chant. Cody controlled the match early and knocked Dustin to the outside. Cody followed it up with a Suicide Dive. Dustin then battled back and connected with a Cannonball off the apron.

After the match, Cody grabbed a microphone and told Dustin that he doesn’t get to retire here. Cody asked Dustin to team up with him against the Young Bucks at Fight for Fallen and the two shared a hug in the ring to a great reaction from the crowd.

https://twitter.com/tde_wrestling/status/1132469320964104194

Dustin and Cody put on an excellent match tonight and the crowd was on the edge of their seat throughout. There was so much emotional already built into this match and the blood just added to it. This was the type of match that reminds you of why you are a wrestling fan. I was expecting a great match but this was simply phenomenal.

Bret Hart Presented The AEW Championship

Jack Whitehall came down to the ring and said that Bret Hart was here to present the AEW Championship belt. Bret got a great reaction from the crowd and a “holy sh*t!” chant broke out.

Bret stated that he was grateful to be here tonight and thanked AEW for giving him a chance to present the title. Hard called Hangman Adam Page down to the ring for the presentation.

Hangman Adam Page limped his way down the ramp and to the ring. MJF interrupted and was greeted by chants of “a**hole!” by the crowd. MJF joked that a fan was coming into the ring to attack him and then cackled into the microphone.

https://twitter.com/tde_wrestling/status/1132471957243478017

MJF called Page a horse and claimed that a horse cannot be the face of the company. He claimed that he was better than Page and stated that he should relinquish his title shot. Jungle Boy, Jimmy Havoc then came down to the ramp as Page exited the ring. The three surrounded MJF and launched him into the crowd. Havoc and Jungle Boy chased MJF through the crowd as Hangman got back in the ring. Bret Hart then raised the title in the ring as the crowd cheered.

The Young Bucks Retained The AAA Tag Team Championships

Fenix tagged in and hit Matt with a couple of boots to his injured arm. The Young Bucks then planted Fenix with the Meltzer Driver for the pinfall victory.

https://twitter.com/tde_wrestling/status/1132481647360790528

AEW provided everyone with several examples of how great tag team wrestling can be tonight. Best Friends had a great match with Jack Evans and Angelico. Aja Kong, Yuka Sakazaki, and Emi Sakura battled Hikaru Shida, Riho Abe, and Ryo Mizunami in a great match. The show started off with SCU vs. Strong Hearts and that match was also very entertaining.

Young Bucks and Lucha Brothers put on a stellar match tonight. There was honestly too many holy sh*t moments to count. While WWE continues to put on the same stale tag matches every week, AEW has already burst onto the scene and presented something far superior to what WWE is offering in terms of tag team wrestling.

Jericho Earned A Title Shot, Jon Moxley Made His Debut

Chris Jericho squared off against Kenny Omega in the main event of Double or Nothing. The winner of the match will battle Hangman Adam Page at a later date to crowd the first AEW Champion. Jericho had an epic entrance that ran through all of his previous gimmicks before coming down to the ring to “Judas” from his band, Fozzy.

Jericho and Omega locked up to start things off. Jericho leveled Kenny with a shoulder tackle but Omega quickly battled back with some chops. The action spilled out of the ring and Jericho comically rang the bell to declare himself the victor. Omega slammed Jericho onto the timekeeper’s table and then hopped onto the barricade.

Jericho shoved Omega off the barricade and into the crowd. Back in the ring, Jericho took back in control and beat Omega down in the corner of the ring. Jericho then connected with a Clothesline for a near fall. Jericho gave the middle finger to the crowd as Jim Ross noted that Jericho is giving Omega time to regroup.

Omega connected with a Hurricanrana and then Clothesline Jericho out of the ring. Omega was busted open and bleeding from his nose as Jericho grabbed a table from under the ring. Omega flipped onto Jericho and both men crashed on the entrance ramp.

https://twitter.com/tde_wrestling/status/1132489621651304449

Omega climbed to the top rope and went for a Crossbody but Jericho countered into a Codebreaker for a two count. Omega responded with a snap Dragon Suplex but Jericho was still the first to his feet. Kenny hit another Dragon Suplex and then a Tiger Driver for a near fall.

Kenny went for the V-Trigger but Jericho countered into the Walls of Jericho in the middle of the ring. Omega broke free and sent Jericho to the mat with the V-Trigger. Jericho hit a DDT and then an Enziguri as the crowd chanted “Kenny!”. Omega lifted Jericho up on his shoulders and Chris once again countered into a DDT. Jericho followed that up with the Codebreaker and then the Judas Effect (back elbow) for the pinfall victory. Chris Jericho will battle Hangman Adam Page to crowd the first AEW Champion.

https://twitter.com/tde_wrestling/status/1132491930087120896

After the match, Jericho grabbed the microphone and scolded the crowd for booing him. Jericho called the crowd marks and boasted about this being his time now. He added that he is AEW and that this is not a company for the fans, it is a company for him. Jericho claimed he was the only reason AEW got a tv deal and is selling out shows. He demanded a “thank you” from Omega and the crowd.

Jon Moxley then came through the crowd and entered the ring as the crowd went insane. Moxley hit Dirty Deeds on Jericho and then did the same to the referee. Jon tried to do the same to Omega but Kenny tackled him out of the ring. The brawl spilled into the crowd as the crowd chanted “AEW!”.

Moxley and Omega then battled on the poker chips on the stage. Jon planted Kenny with a DDT as the crowd went insane. Moxley then lifted Omega onto his shoulders and sent him flying onto the ramp to close the show.

https://twitter.com/tde_wrestling/status/1132492946304098306
https://twitter.com/tde_wrestling/status/1132493721696636928

Jericho and Omega had a very good match, but Moxley showing up will be the thing that everyone is talking about. I have grown so sick of WWE, that a decent show from AEW tonight would have been enough for me. AEW knocked it out of the park tonight and it is impossible to not be excited as a wrestling fan. I’ve been waiting for a legitimate alternative to WWE for a long time and it looks like we finally have that.

Double or Nothing was not without its faults tonight. There were multiple spots that were missed because the camera wasn’t on the action. Super Smash Bros debuted in AEW tonight following the Best Friends match and attacked both teams. The crowd chanted “who are you?” during this and I was right there with them.

I’ve been covering WWE for years now and have been living in that bubble, so this fell flat to me because I honestly had no idea what was going on. However, these issues will be resolved once AEW goes live every week on TNT. Once this company can present storylines and build up characters on a weekly basis, they can absolutely be an alternative to WWE. I felt like I was watching a wrestling show for adults tonight, and cannot wait to see what the future holds for AEW.

Earlier this month, AEW inked a partnership with WarnerMedia for multi-platform access for fans to watch AEW events, airing live weekly matches on TNT in prime time, as well as streaming them through WarnerMedia’s B/R Live and on pay-per-view. AEW’s television deal with TNT is expected to start later this year.

Sonny Kiss, Brandon Cutler, Ace Romero, Glacier, Brian Pillman Jr, Sunny Daze, MJF, Joey Janela, Dustin Thomas, Billy Gunn, Jimmy Havoc, Michael Nakazawa, Jungle Boy, Isiah Kassidy, Marq Quen, Luchasaurus, Shawn Spears, Orange and Cassidy were among the names to compete in the Casino Battle Royale.

Hangman Page Wins Casino Battle Royal, Earns AEW Title Shot

Hangman Page said he wasn’t cleared to compete at Double or Nothing but it turns out that wasn’t the case. Page drew the Joker card for the Casino Battle Royale, allowing him to enter at lucky number 21.

MJF attempted to hide and then attack Page after Hangman thought he threw out his last opponent but the ruse didn’t work. Page delivered a Buckshot Lariat to Friedman and tossed him to the outside for the win. The victory not only puts Page into the record books as the winner of the first official AEW match, he also earns a title shot in the process.

On the Road to Double or Nothing earlier this week, AEW announced that the winners of the Casino Royale and Omega vs Jericho would face each other at a later date with the winner becoming the 1st ever AEW World Champion.
