5 Takeaways From WWE RAW (12/23)

The December 23rd episode of RAW on Monday was taped last week at the Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines, IA. Here are 5 takeaways from the show:

Rollins & AOP Beat Kevin Owens Down Again

Kevin Owens kicked off this week’s show and was about to cut a promo but was interrupted by Mojo Rawley. Mojo said that Owens better have an explanation for that nonsense with the steel pipe and that he needs a reality check. Owens noted that they have a No DQ match next and he cannot wait to kick his ass. Rawley added that everyone is tough with a steel pipe in their hands and that it isn’t going to be a Merry Christmas for Owens following the match.

Owens dominated the match early and took out a table from under the ring. Rawley grabbed a steel chair and hit Owens in the back. Mojo set up a bunch of chairs and slammed Owens on top of them for a two count. Rawley beat Owens down in the corner of the ring with the steel chair and taunted him while doing so.

Mojo perched Owens up on the top turnbuckle and went for a Superplex but Owens blocked it. Rawley then launched Owens off the top rope onto the chairs for another near fall. Owens battled back and hit a Swanton Bomb off the top rope for a two count. Owens connected with the Stunner and followed it up with a Pop-Up Powerbomb through a table for the pinfall victory.

After the match, Owens demanded that Rollins and AOP come down to the ring. Rollins got into the ring iwth Owens as Akam and Rezar stood on the outside. Rollins told Owens that they are even and that it is time for him to come over to the right side of history. Seth told Owens that he forgives him and wanted to shake his hand. Owens leveled Rollins with a Superkick but AOP quickly hopped into the ring and beat him down. Rollins joined in on the attack and went for The Stomp but Owens dodged it and knocked Seth to the canvas. AOP once again beat Owens down and Seth hit him with The Stomp.

Lana & Lashley Are Getting Married Next Week

Bobby Lashley defeated Cedric Alexander tonight on RAW. In the middle of the match, Lana announced that their wedding will be on next week’s episode of RAW and told Lashley to be careful.

Later on the show, Rusev defeated No Way Jose in a quick match. Before the match, Rusev stated that he was screwed over at TLC and that he was upset about it. Rusev then vowed to do something about it.

Rusev brought up Lana and Lashley getting married next week and claimed that it was going to the greatest day of his life. He claimed that getting married to Lana is a punishment and Lana’s wedding day is still going to be Rusev Day.

Becky Vowed To Put The Title On The Line Against Asuka

RAW Women’s Champion Becky Lynch came down to the ring to a great reaction from the crowd. Becky said that she has become the face of WWE and that the company is trying to protect her.

Lynch claimed that she has stayed quiet for too long and that she needs to face Asuka and she is not taking no for answer. Becky noted that Asuka is the one woman to ever beat her fair and square.

Women’s Tag Team Champions Asuka & Kairi Sane came down to the entrance. Asuka boasted about The Kabuki Warriors beating Charlotte and Becky at WWE TLC. Asuka referred to herself as “Asuka Two Belts” and Becky offered to put her title on the line. Becky then spoke Japanese to Asuka and the two trash-talked as Becky’s music played.

AJ Styles Pinned Randy Orton

The OC battled Randy Orton and The Viking Raiders tonight on RAW. Viking Raiders controlled the match early and took turns beating the hell out of Karl Anderson. Gallows tagged in and leveled Erik with a kick to the head.

AJ Styles hit Erik with a cheap shot as the referee was distracted. Anderson tagged in and planted Erik with a Spinebuster for a two count. AJ tagged in and walked into a massive forearm to the face from Erik.

Orton and Gallows tagged in and Randy connected with a Clothesline. Gallows sent Orton to the outside with a Back Body Drop and Randy sold a knee injury. The OC then spent the next few minutes focusing their attack on Orton’s knee.

Randy battled back and planted Styles with a Suplex. Viking Raiders hit the Viking Experience on Anderson and went for the cover but Gallows broke it up. AJ hit Ivar with the Pele Kick and followed it up with an Enziguri to Erik.

Orton tagged himself in and AJ didn’t realize. Orton went for the RKO but AJ blocked it. Randy hit Anderson with an RKO and then went for one on Gallows but his knee gave out. AJ then leveled Orton with the Phenomenal Forearm for the pinfall victory.

Rollins & AOP Sent A Message To Samoa Joe & Mysterio

Rey Mysterio defended the United States Championship against Seth Rollins in the main event of this week’s RAW. Akam and Rezar were ringside for the match. Seth controlled the match early and hit a Slingblade for a near fall. Rollins hit Rey with a forearm to the face and slammed his face into the turnbuckle.

Mysterio booted Seth in the face and went for the 619 but Rollins got out of the way. Seth launched Rey into the ring post and then threw him out of the ring as RAW went to a commercial break.

When RAW returned, Rollins was still in control and sent Mysterio into the turnbuckle once again. Seth connected with a Backbreaker and went for the cover but Rey was able to kick out at two. Mysterio battled back and connected with a Sunset Flip Powerbomb that sent Seth flying into the barricade.

https://twitter.com/WWEUniverse/status/1209321454296346624?s=20

Back in the ring, Rey connected with a DDT for a near fall. Mysterio went for a Crossbody but Rollins caught him and hit a Buckle Bomb for a near fall. Rey hit the 619 and made his way to the top rope. AOP attacked Rey Mysterio and the match ended in a DQ. Rollins ordered AOP to teach Rey a lesson and they dragged him up the entrance ramp.

Akam and Rezar cleared off the announce table but Samoa Joe wouldn’t move. Joe stated that if he gets up it is not to move, it will be both of their asses. Rollins got in the way and told Joe that their beef is not with him. Seth then told AOP to finish him and they attacked Joe. Seth hit Mysterio with The Stomp an AOP slammed Joe through the announce table to end the show.

RAW was a throwaway show tonight. There weren’t too many exciting moments throughout the entire night. I’m looking forward to seeing Samoa Joe get back in the ring but that is the only positive I can take from this week’s episode.

SmackDown Viewership

The Revival Continues To Pitch Match Against WWE Hall Of Famers

The Revival continues to make their case for a cross-generational match at WWE’s next pay-per-view event.

Scott Dawson of The Revival took to his official Twitter account where he pushed for a match that would see them take on WWE Hall of Famers Booker T and Stevie Ray at the Royal Rumble.

The Revival Continues To Push

You can see his tweet here:

The idea of such a match between the legendary tag team and the former WWE Tag Team Champions started earlier this month during the Kickoff Show for WWE’s TLC pay-per-view.

Scott Dawson and Dash Wilder confronted Booker T after the former WWE World Heavyweight Champion said that he thought AOP is the tag team to beat now after aligning with Seth Rollins.

The Revival thought his comments were disrespectful and a sign that he was ignoring them just like everyone else in the company. The tag team demanded Booker T hand over his two WWE Hall of Fame rings to them.

They then stated that Booker T should call his brother to reform Harlem Heat so they can beat them.

After this segment had aired, there was words exchanged between the two tag teams on social media. It will be interesting to see if The Revival continues to push for this contest. With the contracts of The Revival set to expire and the company deciding to book them as a comedy tag team, the match is unlikely to actually take place.

WWE has already confirmed the Minute Maid Park in Houston, Texas will host the Royal Rumble on Sunday, January 26, 2020.

The event will mark WWE’s debut at Minute Maid Park. Minute Maid Park has a maximum capacity of over 40,000 people.

Ric Flair Agrees Corey Graves’ Gripes Over Charlotte’s Booking

WWE Hall of Famer Ric Flair agrees with Corey Graves’ belief that WWE is dropping the ball with his daughter Charlotte.

Earlier this month, Graves commented on the situation on WWE’s After The Bell podcast. He believes Charlotte is “going through the motions” because she is disengaged with WWE’s lackluster storytelling.

Ric Flair’s Agreement

Ric Flair was a recent guest on the WINCLY podcast. When asked about Graves’ remarks about Charlotte, he did not pull any punches.

“I am not happy with the way [WWE] are doing it; I guess she’s been put in that role. Number one, I need to be left out of the equation because she has surpassed me in talent,” admitted Flair.

“She’s never gonna be around for 40 years which is why I’m still a household name. I think they look at it and say, ‘Well, she’s like her dad. She’ll do anything we want her to do because she’s a pro.’

Ric Flair continued by noting that he doesn’t think she’ll ever be bored with her storylines and not participate at its fullest, which he thinks where Graves is wrong.

He did also agree that Flair is the best athlete in the company, a Hall of Famer already and being the biggest star of the women’s division.

As of late, Flair has been paired with RAW Women’s Champion Becky Lynch on television in a feud with WWE Women’s Tag Team Champions Asuka and Kairi Sane.

MLW Signs Alicia Atout To Multi-Year Deal

Alicia Atout has signed a contract with MLW (Major League Wrestling).

The promotion made the news known on Monday when they issued a press release. This deal will see Atout serve as a correspondent for MLW’s weekly series FUSION as well as additional assignments.

These assignments will see her host programming for MLW’s catalog of content.

“I am beyond excited to be the newest member of the MLW family,” said Alicia Atout. “This is one of the most thrilling announcements I’ve shared with all my loved ones, friends, and fans. It feels surreal; I’ve worked really hard to get to this point and moments like this truly make it all worth it. It feels incredible to finally have a place to call home in wrestling and I can’t wait to create some magic with MLW.”

This comes after she joined the promotion earlier this year as a correspondent.

“Alicia brings a passion and quality to MLW broadcasts and coverage unmatched in the sport,” said MLW CEO and founder Court Bauer. “We are very pleased to formalize Alicia’s future with MLW.”

Alicia Atout’s Background

Atout has created content with her hit YouTube series, AMBY, over the past few years.

The series is an award-winning interview vlog with music and wrestling videos. In addition to creating content for her series, she will now take on her new role with MLW.

MLW returns on January 11th for the Zero Hour event that will serve as a TV taping for their weekly television show, Fusion, on beIN Sports. The event will be held in Dallas, Texas at the NYTEX Sports Centre.

Hiroshi Tanahashi Wants AEW Title Shot If He Beats Chris Jericho At Wrestle Kingdom

Hiroshi Tanahashi will take on Chris Jericho at Wrestle Kingdom next year. Jericho vs Tanahashi is scheduled to take place on night 2 of the event, January 5th, 2020. In a recent interview with Tokyo Sports, Tanahashi said that if he is victorious over Jericho he will then ask for a shot at the AEW World Championship.

Tanahashi’s comments in the Japanese-language interview are available here.

A loose translation of Tanahashi’s comments includes that if he beats Jericho on January 5th, 2020, he would open “the forbidden door” by asking for a shot at the AEW World Championship. The article continues to speculate that Tanahashi beating Jericho could lead to a new relationship between the two wrestling promotions.

“If the Tanahashi wins and develops into a championship, the relationship between the two organizations may be new,” a loose translation of some of the article reads.

Eric Bischoff On If He Focused Too Much On NWO Angles In WCW

The New World Order faction is set to be inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame next year. While the angle is considered by many to be one of the greatest of all-time, critics argue WCW focused too much on the angle and dragged it out too long. Eric Bischoff recently addressed if he focused too much on NWO storylines near the end of 1998 on a recent edition of his 83 Weeks podcast with Conrad Thompson.

“Look in retrospect, it’s easy to have 20/20 hindsight,” Bischoff said on the show.

“NWO was so hot, we were trying to keep it fresh. We were trying to find ways to keep it fresh. We had played out the black and white, I think to the extent that we possibly could have, as long as we possibly could have.”

“I think it was time. In order to create story, we had to create dissension.”

“I’m comfortable with the decision we made even looking bad at it now.”

Highlights of Bischoff’s discussion on the subject can be heard using the player below:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fowHbMsf8bY

Bischoff recently reacted to the NWO Hall of Fame announcement.

“The nWo is the storyline, the angle, the moment that storyline was conceived and as it became executed, was probably one of the most important periods in professional wrestling, in this industry, in the last 30 years,” Bischoff said.

Nyla Rose Takes Shot At Brandi Rhodes’ Nightmare Collective

In AEW storyline, Nyla Rose has been suspended for the remainder of 2019. Rose attacked a referee and Shanna following her last victory on AEW Dynamite leading to the suspension. Rose took to Twitter to take a shot at Brandi Rhodes’ new Nightmare Collective faction. While the new group has been cutting off locks of their opponents’ hair as of late, Nyla Rose says she’s going to take off whole heads once she returns.

Rose posted the following to Twitter recently:

Brandi Rhodes’ faction chopped off more hair last Wednesday following a victory by Awesome Kong. Rhodes posted the following reply to Nyla Rose on Twitter:

Where Is Nyla Rose Actually?

Following her “suspension” from AEW, Rose traveled out to Japan 4 days later to begin competing for the Marvelous promotion. The all-female promotion hosted shows earlier this month in Tokyo’s famed Korakuen Hall venue.

Rose spoke about her experience wrestling in Japan recently during an interview with Women’s Wrestling Weekly.

“For those who don’t know me, or are not as familiar with me, I have spent some time in Japan working with Joshi-style. It wasn’t exactly completely foreign to me, so to speak, but after having been in the states for some time, I had to kind of go back and do some tape study on myself and do tape study on Riho. I kind of shifted gears a little bit in order to just be able to match her, because she’s a squirmy, little speedy spry.”

WWE RAW Preview: Rey Mysterio vs Seth Rollins, Non-Spoiler Lineup

A preview for WWE RAW is here despite the show being a taped broadcast.

The reason for that is due to WWE giving its talent time off to spend time with their families for Christmas.

WWE held this show in Des Moines, IA at the Wells Fargo Arena last Monday night. WWE is building up this show around the main event, which will see WWE United States Champion Rey Mysterio vs Seth Rollins.

WWE RAWPreview

The episode will have a Christmas theme due to it taking place two days before the holiday. Here are the non-spoiler matches for the show:

  • Kevin Owens vs Mojo Rawley – Christmas Street Fight

  • Drew McIntyre vs Zack Ryder
  • Ricochet vs Tony Nese
  • Aleister Black vs a local jobber

  • The OC (AJ Styles, Luke Gallows, Karl Anderson) vs Randy Orton and The Viking Raiders
  • Erick Rowan vs a local jobber.
  • Rusev vs No Way Jose
  • WWE United States Champion Rey Mysterio vs Seth Rollins

WWE will also be creating new programs and building on the hype for existing feuds that will take place heading into the Royal Rumble pay-per-view event.

Next WWE RAW

5 Takeaways From MLW Fusion 12/21

Major League Wrestling presented Fusion on BeIN Sports and YouTube this weekend. The show featured two Opera Cup opening round matches and a “Prince of Darkness” match between rivals Jimmy Havoc and Mance Warner.

Here are 5 takeaways from MLW Fusion 12/21:

Ross Von Erich and Tom Lawlor Brawl In New York

https://twitter.com/MLW/status/1208582681077932032

In a backstage segment this week, Tom Lawlor announced that he is reforming his old stable “Team Filthy.” Lawlor was quickly interrupted by Ross Von Erich, however, who was looking for revenge on Lawlor. The two brawled on the streets of New York with Lawlor trying to flee the fight every chance he could get.

Cameras caught up with Lawlor and Von Erich brawling to close the show. Lawlor was able to flee the scuffle by hopping on a subway as its doors closed, separating him from his rival. These two will meet in single’s action when MLW returns to Dallas for “Zero Hour” on January 11th.

Davey Boy Smith Jr. Advances To Semi-Finals Of The Opera Cup

https://twitter.com/MLW/status/1208582177891348480
  • Opera Cup 2019 (1st Round)
Davey Boy Smith Jr. defeated Low-Ki

Davey Boy Smith Jr.’s grandfather Stu Hart was the last man to win the Opera Cup when he did so in 1948. In order to advance to the semi-finals, Smith would have to defeat former MLW World Champion Low-Ki.

The finish of this match saw Low-Ki counter a power slam attempt into a submission. With Low-Ki on his shoulders, however, Smith countered the submission into a pinning combination and got the 3-count to win and advance.

Priscilla Kelly Aligns With Jimmy Havoc

https://twitter.com/MLW/status/1208570349903732736
  • Prince of Darkness Match
    Jimmy Havoc defeated Mance Warner

Jimmy Havoc and Mance Warner opened up this week’s edition of Fusion with a “Prince of Darkness” blindfold match. Havoc rarely abided by the rules of the match, however, and took his blindfold off twice during the contest.

After the second time Havoc took his blindfold off, the referee diverted his attention to admonish him. This allowed Priscilla Kelly to run-in and give Warner a low blow. Havoc then delivered the Acid Rainmaker for the win. What role will Priscilla Kelly play when these two meet again on January 11th in Dallas and the ropes are made of barbed wire?

Alex Hammerstone Wins Inter-Dynasty Match

https://twitter.com/MLW/status/1208576892921622529
  • Opera Cup 2019 (1st Round)
Alexander Hammerstone defeated Maxwell Jacob Friedman

Richard Holliday’s lawyer/father was not able to prevent this match from taking place. The Hart Foundation is said to have had a say in the brackets for this tournament and perhaps they made it so the members of Dynasty would have to face each other here.

Both wrestlers tried to get the other one to lay down with the old “Fingerpoke of Doom” spot. Finally, Hammerstone just dropkicked MJF and the match was underway. While MJF would try his best to take as many shortcuts as he could during the match, Hammerstone ultimately picked up the win with a powerbomb.

After the match, Holliday was able to get Hammerstone and MJF to shake hands. MJF then collapsed after doing so, still feeling the effects of that big powerbomb from Hammerstone.

Contra Attack Strong Hearts

https://twitter.com/Otis_Wrestling/status/1208940573324906497

CIMA was seen backstage this week introducing the members of Strong Hearts to MLW. The members of Contra Unit attacked, however. This likely wasn’t how CIMA wanted his group to make their debut. Future matches between these two factions are likely to be scheduled soon.

MLW Fusion 12/21 Quick Results:

  • Prince of Darkness Match
    Jimmy Havoc defeated Mance Warner
  • Opera Cup 2019 (1st Round)
Alexander Hammerstone defeated Maxwell Jacob Friedman
  • Opera Cup 2019 (1st Round)
Davey Boy Smith Jr. defeated Low-Ki

Scott Dawson Says The Revival Are Struggling After Split With Randy Orton

Scott Dawson has made his feelings known as he says the former WWE RAW and SmackDown Tag Team Champions aren’t quite the same.

The Revival has had an up and downtime while on the WWE main roster while working both brands – RAW and SmackDown.

The seemed to be picking up steam by winning the SmackDown Tag Team Titles around the same time that WWE paired them with Randy Orton on television.

Scott Dawson Says His Admission

Since they split, The Revival has been struggling. This is something that Dawson mentioned in a recent post on his official Twitter account.

https://twitter.com/ScottDawsonWWE/status/1208505920336146432

The former WWE Champion responded to that tweet with, “Legos>thumb tacks. The things #topguys do to get #over @DashWilderWWE @ScottDawsonWWE.”

Dawson commented on Orton’s post by writing, “We’re strugglin’ without ya #Help#FTRKO.”

Scott Dawson’s original tweet was referring to their loss to Heavy Machinery in a Street Fight on this week’s episode of Friday Night SmackDown in Brooklyn, NY at the Barclays Center on FOX.

Pitched Group

Back in November, it was reported that Orton approached WWE Chairman and CEO Vince McMahon to personally pitch for a stable between himself and The Revival.

However, the WWE boss turned down the pitch. Not only that but he split them up and kept The Revival on SmackDown while Orton was sent to RAW.

Now, it’s being reported this week that The Revival will become a spoof of a famous 80s tag-team, The Fabulous Ones, on WWE programming.

On the flip side, Orton has entered into a feud with former WWE United States Champion AJ Styles on RAW. In fact, WWE has already confirmed that The OC (AJ Styles, Luke Gallows, Karl Anderson) vs Randy Orton and The Viking Raiders will take place on Monday Night RAW this week.

This six-man tag team match was taped last Monday in Des Moines, IA at the Wells Fargo Arena.

The Revival Reportedly Set To Be A Comedy Team

Jerry Lawler Talks Online ‘Hate’ For Lana/Rusev Storyline

WWE legend and current RAW commentator Jerry ‘The King’ Lawler recently made comments regarding the Lana/Rusev and Bobby Lashley storyline on his PodcastOne show. Specifically, ‘The King’ discussed how fans online appear to ‘hate’ the weekly ‘soap’ style segments that are being produced, yet the crowds in the buildings are apparently more receptive to the angle.

“There’s gonna be a big deal, and it’s going to make the show after Christmas the biggest deal ever”

Lawler was discussing the taped show that will be airing next Monday for Christmas week, saying; “I can’t do a spoiler but something happens with Lana, Lashley and Rusev on that show,” Lawler began. “There’s gonna be a big deal, and it’s going to make the show after Christmas the biggest deal ever. You just gotta watch what happens on the Christmas show. It’s going to set up the show after Christmas. It is going to be really awesome.”

“the crowd at the Live Events…the people seem to love it” – Jerry Lawler

Jerry Lawler and his co-host then talked about the controversy that the storyline has garnered and the vitriol towards it online. “We talked about this, it is so funny [in] the live arena in Des Moines there and also at Minneapolis at the PPV; The response from the crowd is great to the Lana, Lashley and Rusev storyline. But online on Twitter and everything people seem to hate it. It gets like no respect, but the crowd at the Live Events…the people seem to love it. So I don’t get that [hate] response. I mean, I think it’s really entertaining, I really do.”

“in wrestling people would get tired of just two guys or two women going out there and having a wrestling match…” – Jerry Lawler

Jerry Lawler elaborated further, discussing the importance of storylines in professional wrestling. “Everybody’s not going to like everything you know. We always talked about this, how the fact is in wrestling people would get tired of just two guys or two women going out there and having a wrestling match [without a storyline]. If you put together nineteen wrestling matches on one night for fans to watch; if there’s not something about those matches to get the fans personally invested…what we call a personal issue. So if there’s not some sort of personal issue behind these matches nobody cares. If you really watch a match everybody does the same stuff you know. There’s the dives off the top rope. There’s the dive over the top rope…it’s all the same stuff every single match.”

Rey Mysterio Says Who He’d Like To Face At WrestleMania 36

Rey Mysterio is currently the United States champion on WWE RAW. He recently spoke to Sportskeeda about who he would like to face at WrestleMania 36 and other dream matches he would like to have someday.

“The roster is filled with top talent but I really think that the match we had leading into me becoming United States Champion against AJ Styles – I would love to do that on a big stage. AJ vs Rey Mysterio,” Mysterio said of his dream match for WrestleMania.

He also mentioned during the interview that he is hopeful his son Dominic will wrestle next year.

“I hope that we can all get the chance to see him in 2020, and I’m just as excited as the fans to see him step into the ring.”

Mysterio would also mention during the interview that he could happily retire peacefully after wrestling a tag-team match alongside his son.

“I most definitely would love to share the ring properly with him in a Tag Team Match or a 3 vs 3, but I definitely would love to potentially share the ring with him one day. I think, after that happens, I can retire peacefully.”

The full interview with Mysterio can be read here.

Sonya Deville Reflects On Her Journey To WWE

Sonya Deville’s path to WWE took many twists and turns along the way. The 26-year-old spoke with Fox Sports recently about moving to Los Angeles at 18, MMA, acting and more.

Deville talked about being devastated after her elimination from season 6 of Tough Enough in 2015.

“It’s funny because I didn’t grow up watching wrestling. So I wasn’t like a diehard fan, but I was dejected because I’d fallen in love with WWE, the sports entertainment world,” Deville said.

“(WWE) was kind of the two dreams I always had. I wanted to be an MMA fighter; I was. And I wanted to be an actor. So that’s why I was out in L.A., you know, five, six years ago pursuing both those things. And then I found WWE, which was literally the combination of those two worlds. So it was kind of like I found where I fit in in the world.”

https://www.instagram.com/p/B3Ydj_PnEUK/?utm_source=ig_embed

Deville also talked about making her main roster debut along with Mandy Rose as members of Paige’s Absolution stable.

“Some people’s debuts aren’t that crazy or special, so we were really blessed to be paired with Paige and Absolution. And for that to be our debut was really, really cool.”

She also described the difference between her character on Smackdown and who she is on Total Divas.

“Being Sonya Deville on ‘SmackDown’ is, ‘I’m a badass. I’m a fighter.’ You know, I’m tough and the fans don’t typically see a vulnerable, lighter side to Sonya,” she said. “Whereas on ‘Total Divas,’ I’m able to show them that more vulnerable, open side to me.”

Fandango Out With Injury

After spending from the summer of 2018 to the summer of 2019 on the shelf with a torn left labrum, Fandango looks like he’s going back on the injured list. The 38-year-old member of Breezeango posted a photo of his arm in a sling recently.

https://www.instagram.com/p/B6VOh1nAFyG/

Fandango uses the hashtag #TommyJohn in the post, possibly alluding to the type of surgery he might be having on his arm. If that is the case, Fandango could be looking at another long stint on the inactive list.

Recovery time from Tommy John varies amongst athletes. While pitchers in baseball can take 12-15 months to recover from the surgery, other athletes are often back in as little as 6 months.

Fandango Injured

Tyler Breeze and Fandango defeated The Singh Brothers on NXT from December 11th, 2019. Fandango hasn’t wrestled since. Breezeango returned to NXT upon Fandango’s return from injury this summer.

Breezeango’s 2019 NXT record:

  • August 10th, 2019 – Breezeango defeated The Forgotten Sons
  • August 15th, 2019 – Breezeango defeated 3.0
  • September 25th, 2019 – Breezeango & KUSHIDA defeated Imperium
  • October 9th, 2019 – the Forgotten Sons defeated Breezeango
  • December 11th, 2019 – Breezeango defeated the Sing Brothers.

Cody On Combining Old School & New School In AEW

Cody Rhodes recently spoke to Sport1 in Germany. During the conversation, Cody discussed AEW’s approach of combining old school and new school wrestling.

“They say in wrestling: What’s old is new. There is so much of the territory wrestling and even pre-Crockett, pre-television wrestling, that has so many great stories and element to bring to the squared circle and tell a story within the ropes. To be able to do that on worldwide television is huge,” Cody said during the interview.

“But we also have to do our best not to be a parody of what’s old. Not to be nostalgia for nostalgia’s sake,” he continued. “You have to give people the buffet: some old, some new. We are melting those worlds. I like Memphis Wrestling, southern wrestling, I revel in that old school, but not lazy old school – the diligent, committed old school. If you mash that up with the new school and create something new, like Darby Allin does or MJF: People will let you know how much they love it.”

Cody On Roman Reigns Saying It Is Generous To Call AEW Competition

Cody was also asked to comment on recent remarks by Roman Reigns on AEW. Reigns said to the same outlet earlier this year that it was generous to call AEW competition.

“WWE’s on a 49-year head start and I tip my hat for that,” Cody said. “But what we’re doing is to build upon what fans have been talking about for 20 years, what they want from a wrestling product and what perhaps wasn’t delivered to them. We want to be the alternative. If that means stepping into competition, so be it. It’s better to have competition, for me, for Roman, for everybody.”

Cody also talks about Bret Hart’s popularity in Germany, new stars in AEW, and more. The full interview can be read here.

WWE Hall of Famer Calls Rhea Ripley “The Next Rock or John Cena”

WWE Hall of Famer Mark Henry recently made some interesting comments on the Busted Open Radio show. The part time co-host of the Sirius XM broadcast was discussing NXT Women’s Champion Rhea Ripley with permanent host Dave LaGreca.

Henry started by describing how impressive it was that Ripley has achieved this much at her age, with the Superstar being only 23 years old. “At twenty three years old I was I was still [power] lifting. I hadn’t even got into wrestling yet. Yet she’s [Rhea] already been in it, been there, done that…at twenty three years old. What will she do in the next fifteen twenty years? I’m gonna tell you, she’s going to transcend wrestling.”

Henry then elaborated on the “transcend” comment, saying “she’ll be the next Rock. She will be the next John Cena, she will be able to be the next Batista. She should be able to go outside of wrestling and make a living because she’ll be a big mainstream star.”

Rhea Ripley

Rhea Ripley defeated Shayna Baszler this past Wednesday to become the new NXT Women’s Champion. This ended Baszler’s long and dominating reign on top of the NXT Women’s division. Head of NXT Triple H took to Twitter following Wednesday’s broadcast and had huge praise for the new champion. “An incredible main event and a new champion. One of the most dominant reigns over the @WWENXT Women’s division comes to end and another begins. @RheaRipley_WWE will be the one to lead #WWENXT into the new year… Congratulations. #AndNew.”

Rhea Ripley Talks Shayna Baszler, Triple H, & Winning Championships

Rhea Ripley became the 9th wrestler to win the NXT Women’s Championship when she did so this week from Full Sail University. Ripley ended the 2nd reign of Shayna Baszler in the main event of Wednesday’s show. She spoke to SI.com about the experience.

“It’s slowly sinking in,” said Ripley. “I’m feeling all sorts of feelings right now. I’m happy, I’m sore, I’m excited. I’m everything, plus a bit of tiredness.”

Ripley admitted she had some nerves about the big match.

“It was live TV and all eyes were on me, so I just needed wrap all my nerves up and turn them into confidence. It was an amazing night. It felt like forever leading up to it, and then it was like, snapping my fingers and it was done.”

She also took the time to speak about her opponent.

“Shayna is definitely a badass, she’s credible, and she deserved to hold the title for so long,” said Ripley. “It’s hard to describe, it’s more of a natural feeling, but stepping into the ring with her taught me a lot about myself and what we do in the ring.”

Rhea Ripley On Triple H

Ripley has frequently mentioned that Triple H was a favorite of hers when she was first getting into wrestling. She also talked about her relationship with him during the interview with SI.com.

“Triple H is someone I’ve looked up to since I was a little girl” said Ripley. “He was the reason I started watching wrestling, and I loved our photo together this time.”

“I got one when I won the NXT U.K. Women’s Championship, and I was legit so excited. I had this massive cheesy grin and I hated myself for it. I was like, ‘I can’t believe you made yourself like a goober in your one chance with the Triple H photo.’ So I’m glad that I got a second chance.”

Triple Threat #1 Contenders Match For Universal Title Announced For Final SmackDown Of 2019

WWE has announced a big triple threat match for next week’s episode of Friday night SmackDown to determine the #1 contender for Bray Wyatt’s Universal Championship at the upcoming Royal Rumble PPV.

The opening segment of this week’s episode of SmackDown saw Daniel Bryan, who made his return during TLC come out with his new look. He then started talking about the Fiend.

Both The Miz and Baron Corbin then came out as well and all three of the superstars made the case on why they should be the one to challenge the Universal Champion at the upcoming PPV.

Miz and Bryan then surrounded Corbin but Dolph Ziggler sneaked up from behind, and the segment ended with King Corbin delivering an end of days to Daniel, setting up a tag team match among the four stars for the main event of the show.

The main event saw the A-Lister teaming up with Daniel Bryan to defeat the heels. It was then announced that The Miz, Daniel Bryan, and Baron Corbin will compete in a triple threat next week to determine the next challenger for Wyatt’s Universal title.

Reports have suggested that WWE was originally planning a Survivor Series re-match between Daniel Bryan and Bray Wyatt for the TLC PPV but the bout was then held off for Royal Rumble.

So it won’t be a surprise if Daniel ends up winning the match next week and earn the right to challenge The Fiend. Though we will have to tune in to SmackDown next week to find out whether or not it actually turns out to be the case.

Lacey Evans On Her Goals For 2020

Lacey Evans was only brought in to the main roster during Royal Rumble earlier this year and she has spent less than a year there, but the former NXT star has managed to make a name for herself in this short amount of time.

The Sassy Southern Belle recently had an interview with CBS sports where she talked about things like her face turn, how she would describe her character and more.

When asked what are her goals for the upcoming year, Evans who is currently involved in a rivalry with the SmackDown Women’s Champion Bayley said that it’s probably to become the champion in the new year:

“Probably to become champ and get more opportunities to use my platform to show people what you’re capable of, no matter how hard your life is.

I know sometimes things hurt really bad and I know there are a lot of bad things that are happening, and you feel so down and out on yourself. But trust me when I tell you, coming from where I come from and what I’ve been through, you are capable of anything.”

Lacey Evans continued by saying that if she has to become a champion to tell the world that they are capable of anything as long as they continue to fight and have a plan, then that’s what she wants to do.

Apart from this, the SmackDown star discussed her early life, not knowing what she wanted to do when she was young and more. You can check out her full interview at this link.

Edge Continues To Deny Reports Of His Return

Former WWE star Edge had previously denied the rumors suggesting that he is preparing for his comeback and he once again, has done the same.

The Rated R Superstar recently took on his Twitter and made a seemingly out of context tweet which reads: “Still not and still not. Period.”:

This tweet alone does not make a lot of sense but pairing it with the renewed talk of his in-ring return and speculation over a possible Royal Rumble appearance makes it clear that he is denying the reports about his status.

Speculation Over Edge Possibly Returning At Royal Rumble

Edge himself started rumors about his status with WWE when he appeared at the SummerSlam PPV in August earlier this year and got physical for the first time since his retirement in 2011, by delivering a spear to Elias.

The speculation over his status then quickly spanned into reports of him signing a new contract with WWE after announcing his retirement from the podcasting world.

The former World Champion was then spotted in Pittsburgh where WWE’s medical director, Dr. Joseph Maroon is headquartered, which has only fuelled the rumors and made many wonder if the company could be aiming for his return at the upcoming Royal Rumble PPV.

While Edge has come out and denied the reports, we have seen stars such as John Morrison and CM Punk trying to deceive the fans about their status in recent times.

So this clarification from the retired wrestler is not expected to affect the WWE Universe’s opinion on the matter and we will have to wait for the Royal Rumble PPV to figure out whether or not he is actually planning a comeback.

5 Takeaways From WWE SmackDown (12/20)

The December 20th, 2019 episode of WWE SmackDown aired from the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, NY. Here are 5 takeaways from this week’s show

King Corbin & Ziggler Got The Better Of Miz & Bryan

Daniel Bryan kicked off this week’s show to a great reaction from the crowd. Bryan said that his daughter cried the first time she saw him without the beard and long hair because all she knew was Daniel Bryan the brand.

Bryan got fired up and said he was the man that fought to main event WrestleMania and the man that kicked Wyatt’s ass at TLC. Bryan noted that Bray claims to have trained himself to not feel pain and asked him to come down to the ring so he can prove him wrong.

The Miz interrupted and said that TLC wasn’t about winning or losing, it was about protecting his family. Miz stated that Wyatt will never have a family and that he is going to take the one thing he has (the Universal Championship) away from him.

King Corbin joined the party to a chorus of boos from the crowd. Corbin told Bryan that his brand is failure and then once again boasted about defeating Kurt Angle in his farewell match at WrestleMania. Corbin bragged about defeating Roman Reigns and rolled highlights of him celebrating the victory.

Corbin claimed that he is next in line for a shot at the Universal Championship because he defeated Roman Reigns. King Corbin told Miz and Bryan that they have failed as fathers and then Dolph Ziggler attacked them from behind. Corbin planted Bryan with the End of Days to end the segment.

Braun Strowman Wants A Shot At The IC Title

New Day faced Shinsuke Nakamura and Cesaro tonight on SmackDown. Sami Zayn was ringside for the match. Nakamura and Cesaro controlled the match early and isolated Kingston in the corner of the ring.

Cesaro connected with a Gutwrench Suplex and went for the cover but Kofi was able to kick out at the last moment. Cesaro applied a Headlock but Kingston quickly was able to battle to his feet.

Nakamura tagged in and booted Kingston in the face. Shinsuke applied another Headlock as the crowd got behind Kofi. Kingston escaped once again and finally was able to tag in Big E.

Big E connected with three Belly to Belly Suplexes on Nakamura and followed it up with a Splash. Big E hit a Uranage and went for the cover but Cesaro broke it up. Kingston launched Cesaro to the outside and leaped onto him.

Sami hopped on the apron for a distraction and Shinsuke capitalized with a kick to Big E’s face. Cesaro then leveled Big E with a Clothesline and Nakamura followed it up with a running knee that sent Big E to the floor outside the ring as SmackDown went to a commercial break.

Back from the break, Nakamura and Cesaro were still in control and had Big E trapped in the ring. Big E battled back with a Clothesline and both superstars fell to the canvas. Cesaro and Kingston tagged in and Kofi hit a series of Clotheslines.

Kingston connected with a Dropkick and followed it up with an awesome Hurricanrana. Kofi followed it up with a Double Stomp and went for the cover but Cesaro was able to kick out at two.

Kofi hit the Boom Drop and went for Trouble In Paradise but Cesaro got out of the way. Cesaro hit a massive uppercut and went for the cover but Big E broke it up. Kingston hit a Crossbody off the top rope for a near fall.

Nakamura tripped up Big E on the apron and Cesaro swung Kingston around the ring before hitting a Double Stomp for a two count. Kingston then rolled up Cesaro for the victory. After the match, Sami, Kofi, and Nakamura attacked New Day.

Braun Strowman marched down the entrance ramp for the save. Earlier in the night, Sami informed Braun Strowman that he got him in secret Santa and asked what he wanted. Strowman stated that he want a shot at Nakamura’s Intercontinental Championship. Braun beat everyone down and went to give Nakamura the Running Powerslam but Sami dragged Nakamura out of the ring.

Bayley Picked Up A Win

SmackDown Women’s Champion Bayley faced Dana Brooke once again tonight. Sasha Banks was ringside for the match. Bayley dominated the match early and boot Brooke down in the corner.

Bayley hit a Clothesline and went for the cover but Dana kicked out at two. Dana battled back and made her way to the top rope. Dana connected with a Senton and went for the pin but Bayley was able to grab the bottom rope to break it up.

Dana went for a Powerbomb but Bayley escaped and slammed Dana’s face into the turnbuckle. Bayley then slammed Brooke face-first to the canvas for the pinfall victory. After the match, Bayley and Banks started taunting Dana Brooke before Lacey Evans interrupted.

Lacey ran to the ring but Sasha Banks and Bayley retreated up the entrance ramp. Evans grabbed the microphone and said that she was raised never to let a bully win and challenged Sasha Banks to match right now.

Lacey Evans Beat Sasha Down For Taunting Her Daughter

Sasha accepted Evans’ challenge and Lacey sent Banks to the corner. Sasha battled back and bounced Lacey’s face off the second turnbuckle several times. Banks connected with Double Knees for a two count.

Banks connected with a Suplex and went for the cover but Lacey kicked out a two. Evans brought Banks to the apron and slammed her face-first. Lacey then Dropkicked Banks but got distracted by Bayley.

Sasha capitalized and shoved Lacey into the ring post. Banks then beat Lacey down in front of her husband and daughter as both superstars got counted out. Lacey flipped out and unloaded a flurry of punches to Banks and Bayley before Dana Brooke and several WWE officials broke up the brawl. Bayley and Banks then retreated up the entrance ramp.

Bryan, Corbin, The Miz Will Battle Next Week To Determine Who Faces The Fiend At Royal Rumble

The Miz and Daniel Bryan squared off against King Corbin and Dolph Ziggler. Miz and Bryan dominated early and hit Corbin and Dolph with some Yes Kicks. They then launched them out of the ring as SmackDown went to break.

https://twitter.com/tde_wrestling/status/1208218149671374848?s=20

When SmackDown returned, Daniel hit Corbin with a couple Dropkicks in the corner of the ring. Bryan went for a third but Corbin was ready and countered with the Deep Six for a near fall. Dolph tagged in and hit an Elbow Drop for a near fall.

Corbin hit Bryan with a knee to the ribs and mocked the “yes!” chant as the crowd booed. The Miz was finally able to tag in and hit Dolph with a Splash in the corner. Miz planted Dolph with a DDT and went for a cover but Corbin broke it up.

The Miz connected with the Skull Crushing Finale on Corbin but turned around into a DDT from Ziggler for a near fall. The Miz applied the Figure Four on Ziggler in the middle of the ring. Bryan leveled Corbin with the Running Knee and Ziggler tapped out. It was then announced that Corbin, The Miz, and Daniel Bryan will battle next week to determine the #1 contender. The lights in the arena went out and Wyatt’s laughter echoed throughout the arena to close the show.

This week’s episode of SmackDown was a pretty forgettable show. Roman Reigns wasn’t featured on tonight’s show, despite TLC going off the air with Corbin and Roman still battling in the crowd. I thought Lacey Evans’ daughter trading words with Sasha Banks was the best part of the night.

Details On Possible WWE Royal Rumble Title Match

News has surfaced regarding one title match at the upcoming Royal Rumble pay-per-view event.

Dave Meltzer reported in the latest edition of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter that a match between Asuka and WWE RAW Women’s Champion Becky Lynch is in the works for the Royal Rumble pay-per-view event.

This comes after Lynch cut a recent promo about how she wanted to face Asuka, which also saw her bring up how there are some people who think Asuka has her number since she’s never beat her before.

Per the report, the idea was that Asuka defeating Lynch earlier this year was supposed to lead to Asuka challenging her following WrestleMania.

That changed once the program was dropped. It turns out that Paul Heyman, who serves as the RAW Executive Director, came up with the idea to restart it and to have it happen at the Rumble.

For those who may have forgotten, Asuka submitted Lynch to retain the title at the 2019 Royal Rumble pay-per-view event at Chase Field in Phoenix which took place in front of a capacity crowd of 48,193.

WWE has already confirmed the Minute Maid Park in Houston, Texas will host the Royal Rumble on Sunday, January 26, 2020.

The event will mark WWE’s debut at Minute Maid Park. Minute Maid Park has a maximum capacity of over 40,000 people. WWE has yet to announce any matches for this upcoming show.

The belief is that the company will start to do so once the new year is ringed in as typically December is a slow month for WWE.

Dana Brooke Signs New Contract With WWE

News has surfaced that Dana Brooke signed a new deal with WWE.

The WWE star revealed the news when she recently spoke with Sports Illustrated. Just like other stars as of late, she signed a new five-year contract with WWE.

This is where she talked about how she plans to stand out in WWE.

New Deal

Dana Brooke talked about how you have to make the most of any time you are given. She wants to show her range and is willing to embrace anything that is thrown her way. Looking towards 2020 and transitioning onto SmackDown, she looks at it as a fresh start.

“I just signed a new five-year deal in WWE, and part of my goal is to build my own personal brand. And women empowerment is a key in the success of my career and a key for WWE.

We can do what the male wrestlers have done over the years, and now women are finally being given that chance. That also means that I get the chance to show what I can do, and I really believe that 2020 is going to be the year that people see a different side of me.”

Dana Brooke’s Path

Dana Brooke made her main roster debut in 2016 after signing with the company and working in NXT back in 2013.

She joins several stars who have signed new deals with WWE. These stars include Roman Reigns, Randy Orton, Braun Strowman, Kofi Kingston, Xavier Woods, Big E, The Street Profits, Lana, Jerry Lawler, Jinder Mahal, and Mojo Rawley among others.

WWE has been signing talent both already under contract and free agents to deals that are worth more money and for a longer tenure. The reason for that is due to the competition that they face with other promotions.
