WWE Monday Night Raw Reaction (8/8)

This week’s episode of Monday Night Raw kicked off with Enzo and Cass cutting a promo. Enzo commented on how last week he was flirting with Sasha Banks and that she loved it. Enzo claimed that Jericho came out and ruined everything. Enzo then played to the crowd making Mike Trout and Anaheim Angels references. Jericho then came out and claimed that the only reason Enzo was still in the WWE was because he had Big Cass watching his back at all times. Jericho then stated that he now has someone that has his back and Kevin Owens came out. Owens claimed that he used to like Big Cass but doesn’t anymore. Owens then referred to Enzo as dead weight and that he was disappointed Cass hasn’t left him behind yet. This all led to a match between Enzo Amore and Chris Jericho with Cass and Owens ringside.

Enzo Amore vs Chris Jericho

Amore hit a couple of sloppy looking Hurricanranas in the beginning of the match. Jericho regained momentum when Owens hit Amore with a cheap shot while the referee was distracted. The crowd was very quiet during most of this match. After the commercial break, Amore took control of the match. Owens was shouting at Jericho from outside the ring throughout the match. Amore tried to go for another Hurricanrana but Jericho caught him and locked in the Walls of Jericho. Amore willed himself to the bottom rope and the referee broke up the hold. Kevin Owens once again got involved in the match by grabbing Amore’s leg. This allowed Jericho to hit the Codebreaker, but before he was able to go for the pinfall, Big Cass kicked him in the face. After the match, Enzo and Cass challenged Owens and Jericho to a match at Summerslam. Owens and Jericho accepted.

Winner via DQ: Chris Jericho

Reaction: The promo and the match were decent at best. While Enzo & Cass vs Owens & Jericho sounds like a solid match, it feels like it was just thrown together.

Sasha Banks and Mick Foley had a conversation backstage. Sasha Banks requested that the match between her and Charlotte at Summerslam become a Handicap Match so that way she could keep her eye on Dana Brooke. Foley then made a match between Banks and Brooke later in the night. If Sasha is victorious, Dana Brooke will be banned from ringside during the Women’s Championship at Summerslam. However, if Dana Brooke wins the match at Summerslam will indeed become a Handicap Match.

Braun Strowman vs Jorel Nelson

Exactly like the previous two episodes of Monday Night Raw, Braun Strowman destroyed his opponent. That makes three enhancement matches in a row for Strowman and I’m assuming Nia Jax will have a similar match later in the show.

Winner: Braun Strowman

Mick Foley was backstage with Puff Daddy. Xavier Woods and Kofi Kingston then joined them backstage. Puff Daddy then ate some Booty O’s and discussed the soundtrack to WWE 2K17 and plugged his new tour. Puff Daddy gave Foley some tickets to one of his shows and then asked how Big E was doing. Kofi, Xavier Woods and Combs then left to go call Big E.

Titus O’Neil vs Darren Young

Titus O’Neil was in control of this match but Darren Young rolled him up and grabbed his tights for the victory. O’Neil did the same thing to Young last week on Raw.

Winner: Darren Young

Seth Rollins cut a promo on his Summerslam opponent Finn Balor. Rollins went on to call Balor disrespectful for claiming that Rollins was handed his opportunity at the WWE Universal Championship at Summerslam. Rollins poked fun at Finn Balor’s name and then stated it would be like if he called himself “Rambo Apocalypse”. After a few more minutes of Rollins bragging about the people he has defeated in the WWE, Rollins claimed that he will defeat Balor at Summerslam and that was the end of the promo.

Sheamus vs Cesaro

Once again, the crowd was quiet for this match. Cesaro and Sheamus  fought back and forth for about a minute and then the match was interrupted by a commercial. When Raw returned, Sheamus had Cesaro in a Chinlock. Cesaro battled back and avoided a Brogue Kick from Sheamus and countered it into a roll-up. Sheamus powered at two and the crowd showed some life and chanted “this is awesome” for a couple of seconds. Cesaro kicked Sheamus off of the top rope and sent him flying out of the ring. Once they got back into the ring, Sheamus hit a cheap shot on Cesaro and subsequently hit the referee as well. Sheamus had Cesaro pinned in a roll-up for a three count but the referee wasn’t paying attention due Sheamus hitting him accidentally. As Sheamus was screaming at the referee, Cesaro rolled him up for the victory

Winner: Cesaro

Reaction: It was pretty difficult to get into this match simply because we just saw it last week. You know you are in the middle of an awful episode of Raw when a relatively short match between Cesaro and Sheamus is the only thing that has generated any type of reaction from the crowd.

Dudley Boys vs Neville & Sin Cara

Neville’s mystery partner was revealed to be Sin Cara and he came down to the ring to the sound of boredom throughout the arena. Sin Cara was wearing all black attire. The Dudley Boyz were dominating Sin Cara and Neville was desperately trying to get the crowd involved by clapping. The crowd responded by clapping for 5 seconds and then went right back to being completely silent. Neville went flying onto Bubba Ray outside the ring and the crowd responded with a golf clap. Neville then hit D-Von with the Red Arrow for the victory.

Winners: Neville & Sin Cara

Reaction: It is incredibly awkward to watch wrestling when the crowd is completely silent. The match itself was solid and it appears that Neville and Sin Cara are a new tag team.

Rusev and Lana come down to the ring to celebrate their love. There are multiple wedding cakes set up on a table behind them. The crowd was booing throughout and Rusev began to shout at them. Rusev and Lana then demanded that the crowd stand up and take pictures of them. Roman Reigns interrupted the proceedings and took his sweet time walking down to the ring. The crowd also booed Roman Reigns. Roman offered to Rusev’s best man and offered a toast but Rusev declined. Reigns then challenged Rusev to a match at Summerslam for the United States Championship and Rusev also declined that. Reigns then gave his toast anyways and called Lana a mail order bride. Rusev then attacked Reigns and this led to Lana accidentally being knocked into the table of wedding cakes.

Reaction: Silly me, I thought someone was going to get slammed through the table of cakes. I forgot how shockingly hilarious it is for someone to get cake on their face. I’m also very glad that Roman Reigns has reprised his role as the world’s worst comedian on Raw. I was enjoying the new attitude of Reigns and him just putting on solid matches, but it is clearly much better this way. Corny jokes delivered clumsily is obviously the best way to go. I’m absolutely positive the WWE Universe will eat it up, that is if they ever stop laughing from Lana falling into the cake.

Sasha Banks vs Dana Brooke

Sasha Banks defeated Dana Brooke by hitting her with both of her knees in the corner of the ring. Dana Brooke is now banned from ringside during the Women’s Championship match at Summerslam. This match was an astounding one minute long.

Winner: Sasha Banks

Reaction: An absolute classic.

A video is shown and Finn Balor revealed Seth Rollins will meet The Demon at Summerslam.

Another video is shown where Gallows and Anderson are standing in front of a green screen pretending to be doctors. They made a bunch of jokes about Big E’s privates and claimed that they had to remove them. This was actually amusing.

Luke Gallows vs Kofi Kingston

Gallows defeated Kingston in about two minutes. The Club went to do what they did to Big E to Kingston, but Xavier Woods fended them off with a chair. Gallows and Anderson then smirked at the top of the entrance ramp.

Winner: Luke Gallows

Mick Foley and Daniel Bryan are now in the ring. Daniel Bryan tried to plug tomorrow night’s Smackdown but Foley interrupted him. Foley and Bryan both sarcastically apologized to each other for Orton invading Raw and Lesnar invading Smackdown. Rusev then interrupted and called Mick Foley the greatest GM of all time. Daniel Bryan called Rusev pathetic for trying to suck-up to Foley in order to get out of his match against Roman Reigns. Cesaro then came down to the ring and Mick Foley awarded him a match for the United States Championship.

United States Championship Match: Cesaro vs Rusev (c)

Rusev took control of this match pretty much from the beginning. Eventually, Cesaro was able to hit a Tornado DDT but Rusev kicked out at two. Rusev attempted to lock in the Accolade but Cesaro exhibited incredible strength and lifted Rusev on his shoulders and slammed him to the mat. Cesaro and Rusev then traded punches for a bit and then Cesaro hit a massive upper-cut. Cesaro then got Rusev into the Cesaro Swing and then turned it into the Sharpshooter. Sheamus then tried to interfere but Cesaro knocked him down. Rusev then hit a viscous kick to Cesaro’s face but Cesaro kicked out at two. The official was then knocked down and during this time Cesaro hit the Gotch Neutralizer. Cesaro had the match won but there was no referee to make the count. Rusev then poked Cesaro in the eye and Sheamus followed it up by kicking Cesaro in the face. Rusev then pinned Cesaro and retained his United States Championship. Rusev was then celebrating his victory but Roman Reigns hit him with a Spear to end the show.

Winner and Still United States Champion: Rusev

Reaction: Just an awful episode of Monday Night Raw. The first Raw in the “New Era” was excellent and it got everyone’s hopes up. Unfortunately, Raw has returned to it’s formulaic and painfully unfunny ways. The first episode of Raw post-draft featured great matches and a focus on the Superstars. The past two episodes have featured a bunch of short matches and forgettable promos.
