UFC Light Heavyweight Champion Jon Jones had recently said that a move to WWE is ‘inevitable’ and it’s only a matter of time. Now it appears that Roman Reigns is ready to take on the MMA star when he arrives.
Reigns recently spoke to TMZ during the WrestleMania 37 press conference. He was asked if Jones can dominate WWE like UFC, and Roman said that he has the tools and there could be a future for him in wrestling if he can put in the time.
Discussing a potential match with the UFC star, the former
World Champion said that someone like Jon would definitely want to be in there
with the Big Dog. When asked if he can take on Jones in a match, Roman said
that it would be a hell of a fight:
“Oh man, it would be a helluva fight,” Reigns
said. “But when it comes to the squared circle, I don’t think there’s
anybody better in the world. So, yeah, I feel very comfortable being in the ring
with Jon Jones.”
Roman also said that Jon Jones has a huge career in UFC
which is still going on so he should keep his eyes on the ball and don’t worry
about WWE right now.
Apart from this, Roman Reigns discussed The Rock’s daughter Simone Johnson joining WWE. You can check out what advice he would give to Simone in the video below:
The Usos will be missing this week’s episode of SmackDown
due to past legal issues and it means that Roman Reigns will have to find a new
partner to defend the pride of his bloodline in a match against the Miz and
John Morrison.
The Miz took on his Twitter yesterday and made some interesting comments. He mentioned how he has done more than what many superstars can dream of and name-dropped The Usos and Roman Reigns.
The A-Lister had also teased that the Usos won’t be able to
appear on SmackDown this week. Reigns then jumped in to defend his bloodline
and he fired some shots of his own:
Most-hated to Must-See. A nobody to an A-lister. I’ve done more for @WWE than other Superstars dream of and I ALWAYS make the show. Even Roman knows (from his VAST movie experience ?) that the show always goes on … even when The Usos can’t. #Smackdown
I doubt anyone has seen your terrible movies, let alone care if you actually make the show. But if you do make it, stop by and get your ass whooped real quick, again. #HobbsAndShaw ? #Smackdownhttps://t.co/7mV8boEJCj
I know you don’t pay attention to anything outside the WWE bubble- not much inside the bubble either for that matter. But you’re not the only one that’s been hustling all these years ?? regards ~ #TheMayorOfSlamtownhttps://t.co/s1WyiwZsh5
WWE has since confirmed that the Miz and John Morrison will
be competing in a tag match against Roman Reigns at this week’s episode of the
show.
They confirmed the news on their official website and
announced that the Big Dog will have to find a partner for himself due to the
“impending absence” of the Usos.
For those who don’t know, this week’s SmackDown will be taking place from Vancouver, Canada and the Usos will not be a part of it because their past legal troubles prevent them from entering the country.
When WWE announced Rusev for a gauntlet match at the upcoming Super Showdown event, a lot of people started wondering if his contract dispute with the company has been resolved but latest reports suggest that this isn’t the case.
According to reports from Wrestling Observer Newsletter, Rusev’s dispute with the company is still ongoing and him being booked for the event is not a sign of things getting settled.
For those who don’t know, it was reported earlier this month
that WWE has pulled Rusev from TV due a contract dispute, though not many
details were revealed about the situation between the two parties.
The Bulgarian Brute last appeared on WWE programming during the January 20 episode of Monday Night Raw where he teamed up with Liv Morgan and lost a mixed tag match to Bobby Lashley and Lana.
Rusev has been unhappy with his position for a while and many
believe that he will be leaving the company once his current contract expires.
The former US Champion had also changed his twitter bio back
in mid-January to indicate that he will be a free agent soon but he has since
removed the reference and the Newsletter is reporting that there is still
“plenty of time” left on his current contract.
Whether or not he actually leaves WWE will be revealed in future but one thing we know is that his wife Lana will be staying with the company for the foreseeable future as she has recently signed a new 5 year deal with the promotion.
Rusev will be competing in a gauntlet match alongside AJ
Styles, Erick Rowan, R-Truth, Bobby Lashley, and WWE United States Champion
Andrade at the upcoming Super Showdown event for the Tuwaiq Mountain Trophy.
The advertised line up for the Elimination Chamber has got fans excited but latest reports suggest that this could change when the time for the event comes.
Dave Meltzer talked about the advertised line up on the latest episode of Wrestling Observer Radio and revealed that WWE has not made a final decision on the participants for the chamber match yet.
According to Meltzer, the advertisements are just something the company has sent out to help the ticket sales and it’s possible that the line up will change before the PPV.
Roman Reigns is rumoured to be winning the Elimination Chamber this year and face the Fiend at WrestleMania 36 so he is still very likely to end up in the match.
However other advertised names like Robert Roode could be
replaced because WWE just “threw six names” in the line up to advertise
the bout in the local market.
For those who don’t know, the Wells Fargo Center is advertising that Roman Reigns, Braun Strowman, Daniel Bryan, Shinsuke Nakamura, King Corbin & Robert Roode will be competing in the Elimination Chamber match this year.
The winner is then expected to challenge the Universal Champion Bray Wyatt or Goldberg at the Grandest Stage Of Them All.
Though this isn’t the only match which is being advertised for the PPV and the company is also promoting a Super Showdown championship rematch for the show. You can check out the match here.
Former NXT Champion Shayna Baszler made her Raw debut this week but it appears that she isn’t considered a member of the red roster, just yet.
Triple H held a media call this week to promote Sunday’s NXT Takeover: Portland event and talked about things like NXT Championship possibly being defended at WrestleMania, dropping the term women from NXT titles and more.
When asked about Shayna’s appearance on Raw where she attacked and bit Becky Lynch, the Game first joked that he is wearing a big collar to avoid getting bitten by her. H then claimed that Shayna is still considered an NXT star:
“At this point I’m not 100% sure as far as right now
goes? I sort of look at this like sports teams in a way of where do things net
out and you’ve got to make deals to get people to go different places.”
said Triple H. “As far as I’m concerned right now, Shayna Baszler’s still
an NXT talent until we make a deal for her to go someplace else”
The WWE Vice President later also teased the possibility of the Raw Women’s Champion Becky Lynch coming to NXT to take revenge of the attack on Raw.
Apart from this, Triple H talked about the ratings battle between NXT and AEW and commented on the reports of Matt Riddle having heat with Vince McMahon, which you can check out here.
Simone Johnson is only beginning her pro wrestling career but she has already made history by becoming the first fourth-generation star to have signed with WWE.
The 18-year-old daughter of The Rock recently had an interview with Cathy Kelley where she talked about things like the legacy of her family, watching wrestling as a kid and more.
When asked how she would describe the feeling of signing with the company, Simone Johnson said that she feels like she is a 10-year-old kid again:
“I keep just going back to the idea of… I’m like, ‘Oh, I feel like a kid again and I feel like 10 year old me.’ Because I have loved wrestling for as long as I can remember, and now that I have the opportunity to finally pursue that, like, I don’t know, I can’t put it into words,”
She also talked about The Rock’s reaction to her signing with the company and Simone said that the Great One and her whole family was very supportive of her decision:
“He was so supportive, my whole family has always been
so supportive, and I’m really thankful for that, and he’s been with me every
step of the way.”
Apart from this, Simone Johnson revealed that she first became interested in wrestling after watching various WWE DVDs in her grandmother’s house, and talked about carrying the legacy of her family. You can check out her full interview in the video below:
It appears that the upcoming Elimination Chamber PPV can see
a championship rematch from the Super Showdown event taking place at the show.
The Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia which is the venue
for the event has recently updated their line up for the PPV and they are now
advertising a match between The New Day vs. The Miz and John Morrison for the
event.
John Morrison returned to WWE programming earlier this year. He has started teaming with The Miz after his return and the two won a fatal four-way match to earn the rights to challenge for the SmackDown tag titles at the upcoming PPV from Saudi Arabia.
Though this isn’t the only match being advertised for the show and there is another huge bout being locally advertised which can serve as the main event of the PPV.
The advertisement suggests that Roman Reigns, King Baron
Corbin, Robert Roode, Shinsuke Nakamura, Daniel Bryan, and WWE Intercontinental
Champion Braun Strowman will all be competing in an Elimination Chamber match
at the event.
The winner of this match will then go on to challenge the winner of the announced Goldberg vs. The Fiend match for the Universal Championship at WrestleMania 36.
The Super Showdown event will take place on Thursday,
February 27 while the Elimination Chamber is currently scheduled for Sunday,
March 8.
This week’s episode of WWE Backstage featured a number of big names and it appears their presence helped the show as it saw a big increase in viewership numbers.
This week’s episode of WWE Backstage featuring Charlotte Flair as the special guest and the debut of Stephanie McMahon on the show drew 169,000 viewers, according to Showbuzz Daily.
This is a big 74% increase from last week’s episode of the show which featured the Royal Rumble winner Drew McIntyre as the special guest and had drawn 97,000 viewers.
The episode drew a 0.06 rating in the key demographic of
18-49 and it ranked #132 on the Cable Top 150. For comparison, last week’s
episode of the show had drawn a 0.05 rating and it ranked #145.
This week’s episode of the show also featured CM Punk in the
panel alongside the regular hosts Renee Young, WWE Hall of Famer Booker T, and
former Champion Paige.
These viewership numbers are the second-best the show has done since its official premiere back on November 5. The highest watched WWE Backstage episode was the one aired on November 19, which drew 180,000 viewers.
The November 19th episode was the one featuring CM Punk’s official return on WWE programming so the numbers this week are especially notable.
Despite an impressive debut and a high-profile match scheduled for next week’s show, Jeff Cobb has not signed a long-term deal with the promotion. PWinsider reports that the 37-year-old Olympian remains a free agent.
Cobb’s appearance with AEW should not be seen as the start of a working relationship with ROH, as the appearance was booked independently.
It was announced during this week’s episode of Dynamite that Le Champion Chris Jericho has hired Cobb to take out Jon Moxley in a match next week.
Cobb made a surprise debut during the closing segment of the show. After Moxley scored a hard-fought victory over Inner Circle member Santana, he was taken on a Tour of the Islands.
Jeff Cobb will return to AEW programming next week to take on Mox in the announced match, but this report puts his future beyond that in doubt.
Chris Jericho defends the AEW World Heavyweight Championship against Jon Moxley later this month (2/29) when AEW Revolution invades the Wintrust Arena in Chicago, Illinois.
Matt Riddle has been very outspoken about wanting to wrestle the WWE Champion Brock Lesnar and him repeatedly calling out the Beast led to an interaction between the two at Royal Rumble.
However, while Brock told Riddle to stop talking about him, the NXT star hasn’t slowed down. Reports suggest that this has caused him to have heat with Vince McMahon who believes that Matt has no respect for the hierarchy of the business.
Triple H was asked about these reports during a recent media call to promote the upcoming NXT Takeover: Portland event and the Game claimed that the Boss has not expressed his disapproval on anything:
“To be honest with you, I haven’t asked anybody about
it. Vince didn’t express his disapproval of anything that was said, and I’m
sure if there were an issue, he would’ve called me directly. He’s not shy about
that.
The WWE Vice President then mentioned the confrontation between the two stars. He said that they had a conversation which was between them and he doesn’t know if it’s a work:
“To be honest, I read something [and I go], ‘I don’t know if that’s a work, that’s legit. I don’t know.’ I don’t care either way from that standpoint, I’m entertained by it. If somebody has a problem with it, they come to me, and I’ll help deal with the problem.”
Triple H then praised Matt Riddle as an incredible performer who is very vocal and said that the former UFC star writes checks which in his mind, he can cash.
NXT Takeover: Portland will take place from Moda Center in Portland, Oregon this Sunday on February 16. You can check out an updated match card for the event here.
Matt Jackson of the Young Bucks recently did a Q&A on his Instagram story where he answered some interesting questions such as his worst injury, if MJF is really the person he portrays on TV and more.
When asked what is the hardest part about being an EVP while also being an active performer for AEW at the same time, Matt said that the hardest part is that he gets very little time to prepare for his own matches.
The relationship between the Elite and officials from NJPW has been subject to many rumors in recent time. Though when asked if they will go back to the promotion, Jackson explained that it won’t be happening anytime soon:
“NJPW helped put us on the map and I’m incredibly proud of our body of work there over six-plus years. We will not be returning any time soon though.”
The Dark Order storyline has been one of the prominent stories of AEW in recent times. So a fan inquired if the original plans were for Marty Scurll to be revealed as the Exalted One, to which Matt simply replied with “Nope.”
Apart from this, Matt Jackson also said that Hangman Page will be the biggest star in AEW in a year and revealed that his favorite AEW match is the one between the Young Bucks and the Private Party.
Nick Aldis holds the NWA Worlds Heavyweight Championship with pride and many believe that his long reign as the champion has brought some prestige back to the title.
The former TNA star recently had an interview with Chris Van
Vliet, where he talked about a number of things and also revealed his dream
opponent.
Aldis, who has been vocal about WWE not giving him an opportunity, interestingly said that his dream match would be competing for the NWA World title against none other than the Game, Triple H at Starrcade:
“The ultimate culmination of this [being NWA Worlds
Heavyweight Champion] journey and given the historical context of all of this
would be Triple H at Starrcade,” Aldis said.
I’ve heard he has a replica of the ten pounds of gold in a
case in his office, and it’s like clearly he holds this [NWA Worlds Heavyweight
Championship] in high esteem.”
Nick continued by explaining that it may seem like there is some sort of bitterness or negativity towards him and WWE but he claimed that he has nothing but love for the guys at the company.
Aldis revealed that there has been a steady communication between NWA and WWE about various things and per the NWA Champion, the guys at WWE have been very good to them.
Nick Aldis won the NWA Worlds Heavyweight Championship during the NWA 70th anniversary show and he has currently held the title for 469 days. You can check out his full interview in the video below:
WWE has built ‘The Fiend’ as an unstoppable monster in the last few months and so the upcoming match between him and Goldberg is garnering interest from fans.
Goldberg himself is known to be unstoppable inside the ring. So many people have been wondering if he is going to be the one to finally beat Bray Wyatt and WWE Hall Of Famer Mark Henry recently gave his thoughts on the matter.
Henry talked about the upcoming match between these two stars during the latest episode of Busted Open Radio and when asked if Goldberg is the one to finally beat the Fiend, the former World Champion replied negatively:
“Bill is not the one. This is one of those matches that if it is done right it can be one of those that we really talk about and say ‘Where has this Goldberg been’ and I think he realizes that and wants that, a lot of people would not want to work up to that standard, but that is why he is a Hall of Famer.”
Mark Henry then praised the acting skills of Bray Wyatt. He talked about the segment that set up the match between these two and mentioned how Wyatt transitioned into many different emotions seamlessly. He said that Bray knows how to keep your attention
Bray Wyatt will be defending his Universal Championship against Bill Goldberg at the upcoming Super Showdown event from Riyadh, Saudi Arabia on February 27.
Vince McMahon opened the door of a lot of possibilities when he revealed that they are evaluating “strategic alternatives” to the WWE Network to sell rights of their major PPVs and a deal could be announced in the first quarter of the year.
Then a report about the streaming services suggested that
E-Commerce giant Amazon could be interested in purchasing the rights of WWE
content, or the company itself.
Though Dave Meltzer talked about the rumours of Amazon potentially buying their streaming rights on the latest episode of Wrestling Observer Radio and revealed that the company does not have interest in it.
Per Meltzer, there is no truth to the rumors of Amazon being interested in the streaming rights of WWE content or the company as a whole. He explained that they are looking for content that’s a little cheaper and noted how they already have a deal with NFL.
For those who don’t know, Vince McMahon had revealed during the 2019 Q4 earning call that they are considering selling the rights of their major PPVs to a streaming service such as ESPN+ or Amazon to increase the company revenue.
Then an article published on CNBC featuring comments from Lauren Martin, who is an analyst of the Needham investment firm started the rumors of the tech giant potentially buying WWE.
He had explained that Amazon could first buy the streaming rights to WWE content and the deal would put them in the right position to possibly purchase the company down the line, when the McMahon family decides to exit the business.
Many believe that the former Impact Champion EC3 would be a good fit for AEW roster and the AEW World Champion Chris Jericho is now teasing the same.
The former WWE star recently met EC3 in Orlando and he later posted a photo with the former Impact star from his official Instagram account.
What’s interesting to note here is that in the caption of the photo, Jericho claimed that ‘big things’ are coming in the future for the current WWE star and he then proceeded to tag the official account of AEW in the post:
https://www.instagram.com/p/B8S24nXh-YN/
While this could just be the former WWE star teasing the fans, his post has sparked rumors with many wondering if we can see EC3 joining the roster of All Elite in near future.
After his stint with WWE from 2009 to 2013, EC3 returned to the company in early 2018. In December the same year, it was announced that he will be making his main roster debut; however, he hasn’t done much since being called up.
EC3 has been part of some minor storylines since his main roster call up. He was even repaired with his old manager Drake Maverick for a bit in April 2019 but it was reported that Vince McMahon didn’t like this pairing and he had ‘given up’ on the former Champion.
So far there is no news on how much time there is left on EC3’s current deal with WWE but it’s sure that this post from Jericho will give the company a reason to try and persuade him to sign a new, long term contract.

The IIconics haven’t been seen on WWE programming from a while and the absence of the female stars has made fans wonder about their status.
One such fan recently took on his Twitter and inquired Dave
Meltzer of the Wrestling Observer about the duo and if they will be back on TV
anytime soon.
Answering the question, the Wrestling Journalist indicated that the former Women’s Tag Team Champions are not injured and the reason for The IIconics’ absence is because the officials have decided to pull them from TV.
While he didn’t reveal any timeframe for their return, Meltzer also interestingly suggested that the company could be looking to repackage the duo of Peyton Royce and Billie Kay:
I asked about them a few weeks ago. A decision was made to take them off TV. Maybe repackaging, but the idea was they'd be back. https://t.co/gfHtBIUSf2
The IIconics haven’t wrestled in a WWE ring since November last year and they have been off of the WWE Live Events as well. For the surprise of many fans, they weren’t brought in for the Royal Rumble PPV either.
The duo made their debut on main roster when they appeared on the April 10th, 2018 episode of SmackDown Live. They attacked Charlotte Flair on the show, allowing Carmella to cash in her Money In The Bank contract.
Their only significant achievement in the main roster is winning the Women’s Tag Team Championships at WrestleMania 35 which they held until August. Though many believe that The IIconics’ reign as the champions was underwhelming.
Do you think the IIconics should be repackaged when they return to the WWE TV? Let us know your thoughts in the comment section below.
It appears that one half of the current Raw Tag Team
Champions, Buddy Murphy is the latest star to have undergone a name change and
lose his first name.
WWE has recently updated the former Cruiserweight Champion’s
bio page on their official website and as seen in the screenshot below, the
page now lists him as only Murphy:
Murphy recently joined the stable of Seth Rollins and
Authors Of Pain and this move seemed to be working out well for the former 205
Live star as it has resulted in him winning his first title in the main roster.
Carmella On Becoming The #1 Contender
The main event of this week’s episode of SmackDown Live saw Alexa Bliss, Carmella, Dana Brooke and Naomi competing in a fatal four-way match to determine the new #1 contender for the SmackDown Women’s Championship.
This match was won by Carmella but she couldn’t celebrate for long. The former NXT star was attacked by Bayley shortly after the match was over and the current champion stood tall to end the show.
The former Women’s Champion was then interviewed backstage where she was asked about her win and how will she prepare for her upcoming championship match. You can check out her interview below:
Latest reports suggest that Shayna Baszler will be joining the Raw brand as a permanent roster member and it appears that her debut can come much sooner than we thought.
PWinsider is reporting that the former NXT Champion is expected to be at the next episode of Monday Night Raw from Toyota Arena in Ontario, CA and this is expected to be her starting date with the Red Branded Show.
It was reported recently that Baszler is being moved to the Red Brand after she competed in the Women’s Royal Rumble match earlier last month.
According to reports from Wrestling Observer Newsletter, this move has been in the works for a while and talks of putting Shayna on Raw have been going on for a year.
While there is no news on what WWE is planning for Shayna Baszler once she switches rosters, rumors are that she will be facing the Raw Women’s Champion Becky Lynch at WrestleMania this year.
Lynch is also scheduled to defend her title against one half of WWE Women’s Tag Team Champions The Kabuki Warriors, Asuka on the upcoming episode of Raw.
So while it’s not confirmed what the company has planned for Shayna Baszler, it’s possible that she comes out during or after this match. Though we will have to tune in to Raw to figure out whether or not she actually makes her debut at the show.
WWE confirmed Goldberg vs. Bray Wyatt for Super Showdown in Saudi Arabia on SmackDown this week. Though it wasn’t the only match announced for the show during the night and the company also confirmed a stipulation match for Roman Reigns.
Tonight’s episode of the Blue Branded Show saw Baron Corbin
issuing a challenge to the Big Dog for a match at the upcoming show after
Reigns defeated him in a Falls Count Anywhere match at Royal Rumble.
Roman Reigns then accepted the challenge made by King Corbin but he stated that the bout would be a steel cage match. WWE has since confirmed this stipulation for their fight.
Updated Match Card For Super Showdown 2020
This is the fourth match that has been announced for the
Super Showdown event. You can check out an updated match card for the show
below:
WWE Championship Match: Ricochet vs. Brock Lesnar (c)
WWE Universal Championship Match: Bill Goldberg vs. “The Fiend” Bray Wyatt (c)
SmackDown Tag Team Championship Match: John Morrison and The Miz vs. The New Day (c)
Steel Cage Match: King Baron Corbin vs. Roman Reigns
Super Showdown 2020 will take place on Thursday, February 27
from King Fahd International Stadium in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.
All signs were pointing towards the same and now WWE has officially announced the signing of both Killer Kross and Timothy Thatcher.
The company announced the news on the latest episode of WWE Backstage and they later confirmed the same on their official website as well.
Though they have announced that the new recruits will be reporting to the performance centre so it’s not known which brand Kross and Thatcher will be joining and when.
Killer Kross who wrestled for promotions such as Lucha
Underground and AAA in Mexico joined Impact Wrestling in 2018 and rose to
stardom pretty quickly, before being released by the company in December last
year.
On the other hand, Thatcher is known for his work with
Evolve where he holds the record of being the longest-reigning Evolve Champion
at 596 days.
He has also wrestled for other notable indie promotions such
as Major League Wrestling, Pro Wrestling Guerrilla and Combat Zone Wrestling
since his debut in 2005.
It’s worth mentioning here that recent reports had suggested that the former Impact star Killer Kross could be on ‘fast track’ once he signs with WWE.
While the exact meaning of this is unknown, it’s believed that he can receive a big push in NXT or be sent to the main roster directly.
WWE United States Champion Andrade (Manuel Oropeza) has been suspended from WWE for wellness policy violation. The company announced the news Tuesday afternoon.
He was reportedly told about the suspension this Monday morning, though at the moment it’s unknown what substance the champion was tested positive for.
Andrade defended his US Championship against Humberto Carrillo in a singles match at the pre-show of last night’s Royal Rumble PPV where he retained his title.
The former NXT Champion then faced Carrillo once again in a Royal Rumble rematch on Monday’s WWE Raw. This time Andrade was disqualified from the bout due to interference from his business manager Zelina Vega.
Vega’s interference angered Humberto, who attacked Andrade after the match was over and then delivered a Hammerlock DDT on the concrete outside of the ring.
It’s believed that the angle was done to write the US Champion off of the WWE television and the company is already teasing the same on their website.
Since this is the first violation of the wellness policy for Andrade, he is expected to be suspended for a period of 30 days, before returning to WWE TV.

Royal Rumble 2020 is being praised by the fans as one of the best PPVs the company has put on in recent times and it officially marks the beginning of WrestleMania season.
Dave Meltzer talked about the event on the latest episode of Wrestling Observer Radio and he also revealed some of the matches the company has planned for the Show Of Shows.
The main event of Royal Rumble saw Drew McIntyre winning the
men’s Battle Royal to earn the opportunity to challenge the champion of his
choice at the Grandest Stage of Them All.
Not very surprisingly, the report states that the Scottish
Superstar will be picking the WWE Champion Brock Lesnar as his opponent for
WrestleMania.
On the other hand, Roman Reigns will challenge ‘The Fiend’ Bray Wyatt for the Universal title after Wyatt defeated Daniel Bryan in a strap match at the Royal Rumble last night.
The event on Sunday night also saw the return of Edge who entered the Royal Rumble at #21 and lasted till the final 3 before being eliminated by Reigns.
Edge also formed a temporary alliance with his former tag
team partner Randy Orton during the bout but he ended up eliminating Orton from
the match.
After this, it’s being reported that Edge will be facing the Viper at the upcoming PPV which will likely be his first singles match after his comeback.
Though while these are the current planned bouts for WrestleMania, reports reveal that the original winners for Royal Rumble were different. You can check out the names who were originally supposed to win on Sunday night here.
The Royal Rumble event saw Drew McIntyre and Charlotte Flair emerging victorious in their respective Rumble matches but latest reports reveal that these two weren’t originally supposed to win on Sunday night.
Dave Meltzer talked about the PPV on the latest episode of Wrestling Observer Radio and revealed what the company had originally planned for the show.
According to Meltzer, former NXT Women’s Champion Shayna
Baszler was originally slated to win the Women’s Royal Rumble instead of Flair.
The men’s Royal Rumble also had a different planned winner and the original schedule called for Roman Reigns to win the bout instead of Drew McIntyre.
While Meltzer could not specify when the plans were changed,
he speculates that the changes were made earlier this month around January
14th, as the smart money betting odds shifted to Charlotte from the NXT star at
the time.
Drew McIntyre seemed to have set up a rivalry with Brock Lesnar on Sunday Night after he eliminated the Beast from the Rumble. He had talked about wanting to face Lesnar before and it’s believed that the Scottish star will pick him as his WrestleMania opponent.
On the other hand, Charlotte Flair has not given any hints on who will be her opponent for the show. You can check out a report on some of the planned WrestleMania matches after Royal Rumble here.
WWE has made another change to the Raw commentary team. Former 205 Live announcer Vic Joseph will no longer be calling the action on Monday nights, according to reports.
Joseph was absent from The Royal Rumble PPV yesterday and
Tom Phillips along with WWE Hall Of Famer Jerry Lawler called the bouts
associated with the Red Brand.
Per PWinsider, Vic Joseph has been removed from the Raw commentary team for good. Tom Phillips will be replacing him on the show moving forward. Joseph remains with the company
It’s unknown why the former 205 Live announcer has been
removed from the position but the site is reporting that the decision was made
sometime in the past week.
This the second big change the company has made to the Raw commentary team after they shuffled the announcers for both Raw and SmackDown for the Blue Brand’s move to Fox Network last year in October
Both Michael Cole and Corey Graves who were part of the Raw
commentary team at the time were moved to SmackDown and Jerry Lawler was
brought back to do the play by play of the Red Branded Show.
Vic Joseph and Dio Maddin were moved up from 205 Live to the brand to aid Lawler and it was reported at the time that it was the Executive Director Paul Heyman’s call to bring them on the show.
WWE put on a great show in Royal Rumble but it appears that not all stars made it out of the event unharmed as the former World Champion AJ Styles suffered an injury.
Fans had noted that AJ seemed banged up after taking a spear from Edge and it was strange that he was eliminated from the Royal Rumble match before all the members of the OC came out.
Now a report from PWinsider confirms these suspicions and it reveals that Styles suffered an injury on his left arm during the match this Sunday.
According to reports, AJ suffered the damage after he landed awkwardly on his left shoulder while taking the spear from the returning Edge. While he did get back up, the former Champion was still seen holding his left arm.
A referee then communicated with the OC member on the apron and Styles was eliminated by Edge. You can check out the spot in which he seemingly suffered the injury below:
AJ Styles was talking to these fools before that suspect elimination.. Must've hurt his shoulder taking that spear from Edge #RoyalRumblepic.twitter.com/gEVontovCm
AJ Styles was attended by the medics right after his elimination and per the reports; he was seen with his arm wrapped up and with ice backstage after the incident.
So far there is no word yet on the severity of the injury so
it’s hard to say if he will be missing any time but we’ll keep you posted on
his status.
