Dean Ambrose Update, Spoiler For Tonight’s RAW & Elimination Chamber

– RAW Superstar Dean Ambrose has been out of action since December after undergoing surgery to repair a torn triceps. Ambrose was spotted in Birmingham, Alabama over the weekend, according to PWInsider, most likely to get an update on his recovery.

At the time of his procedure, WWE.com noted that he would be out of action for nine months. The company typically overestimates recovery times, but he is not expected back in time for WrestleMania on April 8th.

– Tonight’s edition of WWE RAW will feature a “Second Chance Fatal 4 Way” match, with the winner qualifying for next weekend’s Elimination Chamber match.

Finn Balor, Bray Wyatt, Matt Hardy and Apollo Crews will battle for the final Chamber pod, but it appears WWE.com spoiled the result of that match over the weekend.

Several fans sent in word that Finn Balor was featured as one of the Elimination Chamber participants, so expect him to emerge victorious on RAW.

Update On Chris Jericho Working With New Japan

Following up on Chris Jericho working with New Japan Pro Wrestling, it appears his rumored match against Tetsuya Naito will not be taking place as soon as expected.

Jericho put on a 5-star classic against Kenny Omega back on January 4th at Wrestle Kingdom 12. The following night, the “Alpha” made a surprise appearance at New Year’s Dash and attacked Tetsuya Naito – presumably planting the seeds for an eventual showdown.

The match has been rumored for NJPW’s upcoming Strong Style Evolved show from Long Beach, California on March 25th. Dave Meltzer noted on today’s Wrestling Observer Radio that Jericho vs. Naito at Strong Style Evolved was the original plan, but that show has already sold out without the match being announced.

With Strong Style Evolved sold out (and featuring a high-profile Cody Rhodes vs. Kenny Omega main event), there’s a good chance that NJPW will hold off on Jericho vs. Naito until a later date. Even though Jericho is available to work Strong Style Evolved, the company is probably better suited using Jericho’s drawing power to sell out another show.

Meltzer speculated that the match could take place at Dominion in June, as Jericho’s touring schedule with Fozzy would allow for it.

Back in November, Jericho appeared on Busted Open Radio and commented on the success of New Japan and how important it is for WWE to have competition keeping them motivated.

“The good thing about New Japan and even Ring Of Honor to an extent is showing that WWE is not the only place in town, and I think the first people that would be happy about that are the guys that are running the WWE because it just makes for a better business, for a healthier business. And not just for the boys but for the fans. It pushes everybody to think more and to be more clever and creative and to work harder.”

Earlier this week, New Japan announced that Strong Style Evolved will air LIVE on AXS TV with Jim Ross and Josh Barnett on commentary.

Random House Books for Young Readers sent out a press release on Tuesday announcing that Cena will be writing a new line of books for children.

The first title to publish in the series will be Elbow Grease, a picture book about a monster truck who is smaller than his four “brothers” but never gives up and displays the grit and determination to keep up with them.

“With Elbow Grease and the books to follow, I want to offer kids a fun and engaging way to learn about the power of ambition, dedication, and heart,” said Cena in the press release. “These concepts have been transformative in my life, from my childhood up to now, and it’s so important to me to pass the positivity on and help our youngest generation see that right mindset is key to achievement.”

Bobby Lashley WWE Update, Brock Lesnar’s Post-WrestleMania Feud

Earlier this week, Impact Wrestling executive Ed Norholm confirmed to Newsweek that Bobby Lashley is no longer with the company. Nordholm admitted that he wanted to retain Lashley, but put him over as a great talent and wished him the best in his next step.

That next step is becoming more clear. According to the latest Wrestling Observer Newsletter, Lashley is expected to appear on WWE programming “any time now.” Upon leaving Impact Wrestling, Lashley negotiated with both WWE and New Japan Pro Wrestling before settling on WWE.

Going back to late 2016, Bobby Lashley has been talking about wanting to work with Brock Lesnar. According to Dave Meltzer, Lashley might finally get his wish after WrestleMania.

“The belief is that he will work with Lesnar after WrestleMania, although those close to the situation say the working with Lesnar is not 100 percent.”

– Wrestling Observer Newsletter

During an interview with the Fight Network that aired back in October, Lashley spoke passionately about his desire to work with Lesnar – whether in the ring or in a pro MMA fight. “Of the matchups that I think I need, I think that would be a good matchup,” said Lashley. “Because right now, Brock really doesn’t have anybody to wrestle. They’re just throwing people in there.”

Lashley took issue with people who complain about Lesnar’s part-time schedule. “Because if he stayed on there full time, What are they going to do, just squash everybody on the roster? You guys don’t have anybody to really challenge him. So, you need somebody legitimate and credible to go against Brock to make it make sense.”

Kenny Omega Praises New Day, Says Big E Could Be World Champion

NJPW star Kenny Omega spoke with Sports Illustrated for this week’s Week In Wrestling feature and had strong praise for WWE Superstar The New Day.

In speaking with Justin Barrasso, Omega said he keeps up with WWE television and sees The New Day as having the “total package” of athleticism, in-ring ability and charisma.

“They’re three of my favorite guys in the entire company,” said Omega. “They clearly know how to entertain, and they’re all great athletes.”

NJPW’s Wrestle Kingdom event earlier this month featured WWE legend (and free agent) Chris Jericho crossing over to battle Omega in match most fans never expected to see. Omega has been outspoken about wanting to find a way to work with WWE to make a match happen between The Elite and The New Day.

Despite New Day’s success, their act has not evolved a lot in recent years. When asked if WWE has them boxed into a certain role, Omega was quick to prop them all up.

“When I see Big E, I clearly see someone who could be world champion,” said Omega. “The guy is on another level. Kofi is one of those guys who is good in all situations and can challenge for all titles, and Xavier is another great athlete who is talented in the ring and confident on the mic.”

Having such a high opinion of the New Day, Omega says he’s seen their stagnation as an indication of what might be in store for him if he ever joined WWE.

“It’s things like that that really make me think twice about what I would be getting into if eventually I do go there,” said Omega.

Report: WrestleMania 35 To Be Held In “NY/NJ” At MetLife Stadium

We’ve been expecting word on the host city for next year’s WrestleMania 35 pay-per-view and it appears to be a done deal.

According to Robbie Fox of Barstool Sports, Metlife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey will host the event on April 7, 2019.

Philadelphia and Detroit were reportedly finalists under consideration as part of the bidding process. If you’re in the camp of people unhappy that “WrestleMania returns to the same cities every year” – it’s not hard to understand why WWE is returning to New York City.

MetLife Stadium hosted WrestleMania 29 back in 2013. The show, which featured John Cena vs. The Rock in the main event, was a monster success for the company. Not only did they pack over 80,000 fans into the stadium, but it was the highest grossing show in company history, pulling in over $72 million.

WWE holding SummerSlam in Brooklyn for 4 consecutive years is another sign how ‘accommodating’ the city is for them. Last year’s WrestleMania 33 weekend from Orlando, FL (Hall of Fame, NXT, WM33, RAW, SD) brought $181.5 million to the local economy – making WrestleMania weekend an attraction that cities bend over backwards to secure.

An official announcement from WWE is expected in the following days.

Impact Execs Talk About The Departures Of EC3, Lashley & Borash

Impact Wrestling executives Ed Nordholm, Don Callis and Scott D’Amore recently spoke with Newsweek to address the recent wave of departures from the company.

Don Callis put a positive spin on the recent shakeup, noting that Impact has recently brought in talented competitors such as Brian Cage, Austin Aries and John Hennigan.

Here are some highlights of what was said about EC3, Bobby Lashley and Jeremy Borash:

EC3

Last weekend, we saw EC3 ringside at NXT Takeover: Philadelphia. He did an interview backstage at the show talking about returning to WWE after 5 long years. Scott D’Amore commented on what led to EC3 leaving Impact.

“His contract was not up,” D’Amore revealed. “He came to us, we had a frank discussion about where he saw himself going.  We decided to sit down and work something out that worked for us on how we’d wrap up this portion of his career.  I didn’t watch NXT TakeOver but when he showed up on screen and my phone started blowing up, I texted him:

‘Congratulations. All the best to you. You’ve got nothing but love and support from us here. And if you need anything, you know where we are.’

And he wrote back the same thing.”

Bobby Lashley

Ed Nordholm admitted that it’s not a good thing when you lose a talent like Bobby Lashley, but wishes him the best in his next career move, whether it’s pro wrestling or MMA.

“Bobby is free to figure out what he wants to do next, whether it be wrestling or mixed martial arts,” Nordholm said. “We wish him all the best.  He’s a great talent, it’s foolish to say, ‘No, we wouldn’t want to retain him,’ but he has his own ambitions about what he thinks is good for him next in his career.”

Jeremy Borash

Perhaps the most surprising departure from Impact in recent months is Jeremy Borash, who had been with the company since its inception in 2002. Ed Nordholm and Scott D’Amore both wished him well, but said they have a lot of other talented people on staff ready to fill his roles behind the scenes.

Nordholm: “He is leaving and joining the WWE.  We wish him all the best. He’s a talented guy and has been with the company forever. But we have a lot of talented guys—change is good and it gives other guys a chance to step up.”

D’Amore: “We always wish Jeremy well. I got one of my first breaks [from him]—Jeremy hired me to be a producer at World Wrestling All-Stars. But we have editors on our team who don’t get the notoriety that Jeremy does. We have great players ready to step up.”

– Live viewership for WWE’s Mixed Match Challenge series on Facebook continues to decline. This week’s episode peaked at around 62,000 viewers, down over 50% from the premiere. Here are the approximated peak live viewership numbers so far:

  • Week 1: 135,600
  • Week 2: 91,900

Dana White & Cyborg React To Ronda Rousey In WWE

UFC President Dana White and UFC Women’s Featherweight Champion Cris Cyborg are the latest big names from the MMA world to comment on Ronda Rousey’s transition from the Octagon to the squared circle.

Dana White and Ronda Rousey have worked closely over the years and made boatloads of money together during Rousey’s reign of terror as the baddest woman in the UFC. After suffering two losses in the cage, Rousey decided it was time to move on to the next chapter of her career, although she has not closed to the door on another UFC fight down the road. So, how does Dana White feel about losing one of his top box office draws to Vince McMahon?

Journalist Adam Hill of the Las Vegas Review-Journal texted got a quote from Dana White earlier this week. While the UFC boss would have loved to get a few more fights out of Rousey, he was gracious and wished her the best in WWE.

“I’m very happy for her,” White said. “She loves pro wrestling and has always been a big fan so I know how much his means to her. She keeps accomplishing everything she’s ever wanted.”

Rousey’s longtime bitter rival Cris “Cyborg” Justino took another approach when talking about Rousey leaving MMA for pro wrestling. She started off by saying, “I believe that she will be happy in WWE” – which on the surface, seems nice. However, the tone of her comments about Rousey took a sharp u-turn, as she took some cheap shots at Rousey and the sport of pro wrestling itself.

Head over to our partner site MMANews.com to read what Cris Cyborg said about Ronda Rousey joining WWE.

Rockstar Spud Debuts As New 205 Live GM

Former Impact Wrestling star Rockstar Spud has been revealed to be the new General Manager of 205 Live. Spud, now known as Drake Maverick, made his WWE debut on Tuesday night’s episode.

As his first order of business, he announced a 16-man tournament to crown a new WWE Cruiserweight Champion.

The Cruiserweight Championship was vacated last week following the unceremonious departure of former champion Enzo Amore.

Viewership For Monday’s Post-Rumble Edition of RAW

Monday’s 1/29 edition of WWE RAW averaged 3.395 million viewers.

Last week’s RAW 25th Anniversary special popped a huge number with 4.497 million viewers. A more apples-to-apples comparison, RAW the week before that did 3.250 million.

RAW featured post-Royal Rumble fallout, including the news of Ronda Rousey joining WWE and several big qualifying matches for next month’s Elimination Chamber pay-per-view.

Here’s the hourly viewership breakdown, courtesy of Showbuzzdaily:

  • Hour 1: 3.662
  • Hour 2: 3.461
  • Hour 3: 3.061

In addition to Braun Strowman destroying the RAW announcer’s stage in his latest feat of strength, WWE kept viewers tuned in by two high-profile first-time matchups – including John Cena vs. Finn Balor and Asuka vs. Sasha Banks.

RAW was the most-watched show on cable with the coveted 18-49 demographic, but fell behind Hannity, Tucker Carlson and Laura Ingram’s shows on Fox News in overall viewers (which skew older).

Triple H: “Large Team” Used To Sneak Rousey Into The US For Rumble Appearance

WWE sent shockwaves throughout the sports world on Sunday night with Ronda Rousey’s surprise appearance at the Royal Rumble and the subsequent news that she’s signed a “full time” deal with the promotion.

Prior to the Royal Rumble appearance, Rousey was in Colombia working on a new movie, Mile 22. As you can imagine, both WWE and Rousey went to great length in an effort to keep fans in the dark about her Sunday night plans. In fact, Rousey (and several members of the Mile 22 production team) were posting photos of her in Colombia on social media throughout the weekend.

WWE’s Executive Vice President of Talent, Live Events and Creative, Paul “Triple H” Levesque spoke to USA Today about the steps that were taken to keep the big secret.

“It was a monumental task, it took a large team.”

Due to the widespread use of social media, Ronda Rousey’s worldwide fame and speculation that she would be at the Royal Rumble, Triple H says WWE had to use a “large team” to extract Rousey from Colombia and smuggle her into the United States unnoticed.

“It’s harder than you think in this world of social media. As it was coming down to making the decision we wanted to do this, there were a lot of last-minute things. She was in Colombia doing the movie. Trying to get somebody on a flight that is as famous as Ronda is, and as visible as she is – and internationally she’s almost bigger than she is in he U.S. – on a flight, into the country, through customs, clear security, on another flight to Philly, shuttle to a hotel, into the service entry, brought to a bus, hidden in the arena the whole day, and not until right before she walks out there does anybody see her.”

Triple H it was a “monumental task” and “it took a large team” to create that unbelievable moment for the WWE fans. The entire ‘operation’ was kept very, very quiet on all fronts and only a handful of people knew what was being done.

Papa Roach’s song “To Be Loved” was the RAW theme song from 2006 – 2009.

Hulk Hogan Deletes Tonedeaf Tweet About Women’s Royal Rumble

As Hulk Hogan looks to mend his damaged relationship with WWE in hopes of an eventual return to the promotion, the disgraced wrestling icon isn’t doing himself any favors with his late night tweets.

WWE made a huge deal out of the first-ever Women’s Royal Rumble match – and rightfully so. The Women’s Rumble closed the show on Sunday night and managed to live up to the tremendous hype its received over the past several months.

Hogan, winner of two Royal Rumbles (1990, 1991), chimed in late Sunday night with this gem of a tweet, which was later deleted:

The Dudley Boyz Announced For WWE Hall Of Fame

D-Von … get the Hall of Fame rings!

CBS Sports announced on Monday morning that legendary tag team The Dudley Boyz are joining Bill Goldberg as members of the WWE Hall of Fame’s Class of 2018.

During their 20 year career, Bubba Ray and D-Von amassed 18 tag team title reigns across promotions such as ECW, WWE Impact Wrestling, All Japan and New Japan Pro Wrestling.

“The legacy of the Dudley Boyz is really the last of the Mohicans,” Bubba Ray told CBS Sports. “We are the last, legitimate, great tag team that you most likely will ever see; the most old school tag team that there is. I don’t think you will ever see a tag team go on to accomplish what we have accomplished, whether that’s in the WWE or any place else. We really are the last of many, many generations of great tag teams.”

“The great thing about us is we didn’t take no for an answer,” D-Von said. “We just went out there and did it when nobody thought we could. That was the biggest thing that Bubba and I had to face in our career because, back in ECW, we weren’t really supposed to be an act to be reckoned with.”

The 2018 WWE Hall of Fame Ceremony takes place during WrestleMania 34 weekend on Friday night, April 6th from New Orleans.
