  • Dana White Says Marquardt Choked Again At UFC 122

Yushin Okami Puts The Gloves To Nate Marquardt

UFC’s outspoken president Dana White spoke at the UFC 122 post-fight press conference on Saturday from Germany and let the world know what he thinks about Nate Marquardt following his loss to Yushin Okami. White said:

“He is a choker, he choked tonight. Marquardt is such a talented guy, and what I’m seeing is stuff from the Greg Jackson camp. This camp continuously – when these guys fight, their corner is either telling them they’re ahead or they’re winning. I mean, Nate Marquardt sat here tonight and said that he thought he won the fight. Where the [expletive] is his corner? You go into the last round and you’re getting outstruck by a wrestler, and you think you won the fight? And this is consistent with the Greg Jackson camp.”

Marquardt also spoke at the press conference, downplaying the loss and maintaining his position that his performance was a lot stronger than the judges gave him credit for:

I felt great coming into this fight. Mentally, I felt ready. I had a great camp. I had a great game plan, and honestly, I feel like I was landing the harder shots. When he was catching me, it wasn’t really affecting me, but the judges perceive it as him controlling the fight. I felt I did enough to win, but I wasn’t a spectator. I was in the fight, so it’s hard for me to say. Either way, I’m still one of the best, and I’m going to get back in there and be the champ one day.”

What do you guys think – does Marquardt really have what it takes to hold UFC gold? Comment below.

  • Lesnar-Mir 3 Likely Next, Velasquez-Dos Santos Update

UFC President Dana White recently spoke to the UK’s Fighters Only Magazine about what’s up next for former UFC Heavyweight champion Brock Lesnar.

Despite online reports that Brock Lesnar wanted to fight Roy “Big Country” Nelson next, White says that’s not true, Lesnar will not get a rematch at Cain Velasquez and that a rubber match against Frank Mir is most likely.

“[Brock] never asked for Roy Nelson, that’s not true. The last thing I did hear was that he wants to fight Frank Mir again. That fight kind of makes sense so… We will probably see Lesnar fight Mir next, I think that the rubber match makes sense.”

A third fight to settle the score makes sense, but Frank Mir sad in a recent interview that he wants to win one fight before fighting Lesnar again.

  • Faber Describes “Scary” Submission Win At WEC 52

Urijah Faber was victorious in his bantamweight debut against Takeya Mizugaki at Thursday’s WEC 52 show. Faber choked out Mizugaki with a rear naked choke in the final moments of the first round and describes a scary moment before referee Josh Rosenthal called the fight:

“I didn’t realize [Mizugaki] was out for so long. I knew he was going out because I could tell how deep it was. For the most part, I was choking him with one arm, which is how I beat Dominick Cruz, with one arm. I knew he was going out but I didn’t realize it was that bad, he was stiffed up, it was kind of scary. I mean, you don’t want to do that to somebody but I didn’t realize either, I saw the time limit of 1:10 when I started choking him and I just knew I had to get it in there.”

  • Rampage Hypes Machida Fight, Talks Loss To Evans

Former UFC Light Heavyweight champion Quinton “Rampage” Jackson recently spoke to MMAJunkie.com about his loss to Rashad Evans at UFC 114 and and his upcoming fight with Lyoto Machida later this month. Here are some highlights of what Rampage said about:

His Loss To Rashad Evans: “I know exactly the reason I lost that fight, and I knew I lost that fight before I even stepped in the cage. The day I lost that fight was a couple of weeks before the fight even started. It had nothing to do with the movie tour or anything. I’d like to keep that personal, but sometimes we fight when we know we shouldn’t fight,” Jackson said. “Sometimes we should back out of fights. Because the fight as so delayed and so well-promoted, I felt like I owed it to my fans to fight no matter what the outcome was, so I still fought. I always keep stuff to myself. That’s why I like my training camp in the U.K. We try to keep stuff secretive. We don’t leak anything. I just did my thing and hoped for the best outcome, and I just kept going and kept fighting so the fans were happy.”

Being Prepared For Machida: “I’m going to be prepared for a fight,” Jackson said. “It’s just how excited I am about fighting a person or not. I’d rather fight somebody who is going to put on a show like me and stand and bang. I feel like those people are the true warriors, the true fighters, like the way B.J. Penn fights and how Matt (Hughes) fights. I like watching guys like that fight. The other guys, I’m not a fan of them at all. I just feel like I have to fight with the true warrior spirit. In the octagon, you fight. It’s not like boxing where guys try to outpoint each other and go for decisions. We’re MMA fighters. We’re the best athletes in the world. I just hate to see our sport changed into boxing where people aren’t even fighting anymore. I can’t even watch a boxing match anymore.”

  • Mizugaki Hypes Tonight’s WEC Fight Against Faber

WEC fighter Takeya Mizugaki recently spoke to MMAJunkie.com about tonight’s fight against Urijah Faber at WEC 52. Here are the highlights of what he said about:

How Big This Fight Is For Him: “This fight is as big as the fight when I fought Miguel Torres for the WEC title. I feel like I’m challenging Urijah because he is a star of the WEC. This is almost to be like the same value as a title fight.”

Faber’s Popularity: I think the popularity of Urijah Faber overseas, which means outside North America, is almost at the same level as the UFC’s top fighters. In terms of Japan, I believe MMA fans all know who Urijah Faber is. For me to win this fight means my value will go up in America, as well as in Japan and everywhere in the world.”

Faber Cutting To 135: “Of course by cutting down to 135, I expect Urijah’s strength to be a little less than it was at 145. More than anything, by cutting to 135, I think he’s going to have a little problem with his stamina. Of course, we don’t know what’s going to happen. We’ll see, but that’s what I’m hoping to see.”

His Goals: “My goal is one thing. Since we’re going to the UFC next year, to become a UFC champion. I don’t think about anything else but to try and get that title.”

According to Strikeforce CEO Scott Coker, a grudge match between Strikeforce Welterweight champion Nick Diaz and Jason “Mayhem” Miller is being planned and could be finalized in the near future. Coker told the New York Daily News:

“It’s something that we’re definitely looking at. You have to look at it from all different angles. Would it be a fun fight to promote? Sure. I think we should wait until the beginning of the year, and let’s have another conversation on that because with Miller and Diaz I just couldn’t imagine the extra security that I’d probably need to get to make that fight happen.”

  • Nate Marquardt Thinks GSP Will Destroy Jake Shields

Following Jake Shields’ lackluster decision victory over Martin Kampmann at UFC 121, welterweight fighter Nate Marquardt thinks that his teammate Georges St. Pierre will “destroy” the UFC newcomer when the fight goes down. Marquardt says:

“I think [Shields] definitely would be good at middleweight but I thought he looked bad at 170. Part of it was the weight cut, but part of it is his style as well, and I think a lot of people underestimate Kampmann — he’s a tough, well-rounded fighter. I don’t think he’s the best but he’s good at everything. Shields is kind of the opposite — not good at some things but really good or the best at other things.”

Despite Shields’ abilities inside the cage, he didn’t hold up too well against a well-rounded fighter .. so his chances against the division’s champion don’t look too good:

“I think putting Shields against a well-rounded opponent was bad for him against Kampmann and worse against Georges. I think Georges is going to destroy him.”

  • Injury Updates On The Undertaker, CM Punk & Sheamus

    – The Undertaker underwent shoulder surgery in the past week to repair his torn rotator cuff. Obviously the hope is that he’s healthy in time for WrestleMania, but it’s not guaranteed and it will depend on how his recovery goes.

    – CM Punk, who injured his lower back at WWE’s Bragging Rights pay-per-view, opted not to have surgery because a doctor told him he’d be able to rehab what’s believed to be a torn muscle tendon.  Punk will be out of action until at least January, but will be healthy in time for WrestleMania season.

    – Sheamus has a real nasty bruise on one of his legs and was seen limping around backstage at television this past week. He’s not expected to miss any ring time.

  • Junior Dos Santos Eager For His Heavyweight Title Shot

In a recent interview with Brasil Combate, UFC’s #1 heavyweight contender Junior Dos Santos spoke about his upcoming championship fight against new champion Cain Velasquez.  Dos Santos, who defeated Roy Nelson at UFC 117 to earn the title shot, is eager to find out when the fight will take place and had this to say:

“I hope they [UFC] confirm soon, I’m anxious. I can’t promise much but I’m going to work to knock Velasquez out,” he said. “Wrestling is the key of the combat. Cain won’t wish to equal abilities, he will try to take me down and throw punches on the ground, then it’s good to get the timing and take advantage of it. Velasquez was never defeated. I will be the underdog for this challenge and I feel good so. It was this way I arrived where I am in UFC. A well-done basical preparation always provides good surprises. This is the biggest trump I have got. I believe in my boxing overall. Even being prepared in other aspects, I would lie if I told you that I don’t think in fighting on the feet.”

Dos Santos continued, “His win over Brock Lesnar was a solid prove that force isn’t all. If we analize the fighters who have arisen in the latest years and the fight’s level, I think we have the ideal balance between power and technique at last. The championship rotation is going to be huge. It’s a new era for the category and I will be on the top.”
