  • HBK Says He’s Really Retired, WWE Files New Trademarks & More

    — Ever since Shawn Michaels was pinned by the Undertaker at WrestleMania and forced into retirement, there’s been a great deal of skepticism was to whether the Heartbreak Kid really could stay away from the ring. Michaels posted a message on Twitter over the weekend that addresses the situation and won’t make any of his fans happy. He wrote:

“I’m staying retired. Understand skepticism though”

    – WWE recently registered the following trademarks:

  • Jim Ross Talks About Scouting At WWE Developmental

WWE Hall of Famer Jim Ross has updated his blog, which you can read in its entirety over at JRsBarBQ.com. In this update, JR talks about visiting WWE’s developmental territory over the weekend and scouting for new talent. He wrote:

“Enjoyed being around the 63 wrestlers who are trying out in Tampa this weekend and that ends Monday. Had an especially good time w/ Dusty Rhodes and the entire FCW crew who all do a great job teaching the fundamentals of the wrestling biz.

It’s hard for me to say how many prospects to be offered contracts but my best guess is that it will be in single digits likely between 2-5.

Really had a good time talking to many of the prospects Saturday and Sunday. I enjoy mentoring and helping these young people achieve their goals.

Mathematically, it’s tougher to earn a spot on a WWE roster than it is to make a 53 man NFL roster.

Goldust spoke to the group on Sunday and did anazingly well addressing the group and answering their questions. I heard R Truth also did a nice job addressing the group Friday. John Cena will neet w/ them on Monday morning.

As I understand it, WWE officials will award contracts to the most deserving candidates Monday afternoon. I wish them all good luck and hope that those who don’t leave w/ a deal stay positive and continue to chase an elusive dream.”

  • *Spoilers* WWE SmackDown Tapings Results For Tonight

WWE taped this week’s episode of SmackDown on Tuesday night from the American Bank Center in Corpus Christi, Texas.

Credit to reader Joseph LeMcCoy and WrestlingNewsWorld for this live recap:

    WWE SmackDown Results For Friday:

    * Prior to the taping the ring crew places a black carpet in the ring with a casket.

    * SmackDown opens with Kane in the middle of the ring with the casket. A video recap from last week is shown with Rey Mysterio earning the number one contendership. Kane says he sits by The Undertaker everyday waiting for him to awake. He said yesterday was the first time he moved his eyes and spoke. Kane says he only said two words; the name of the person who attacked him.

Kane said The Undertaker mumbled Rey Mysterio and anger raged through his body. He said Rey’s name hangs in the air like a demon. He then asks why Rey would do it. Kane continues on saying that beating Rey at SummerSlam still wouldn’t be enough. Kane says Rey must pay for his sins and experience what The Undertaker endured. The lights go out with Kane still in the ring.

    * Rey Mysterio vs. Jack Swagger in a No Disqualification match is announced.

    * Christian b. Drew McIntyre
    – Christian counters a DDT and gets the win via pinfall.

    * Layla vs. Tiffany for the WWE Women’s Championship is announced for later tonight.

    * Cody Rhodes gave his grooming tips. He was wearing a face mask. He said he’s bringing us one step closer to being dashing.

    * An Alberto Del Rio video package is shown.

    * CM Punk is backstage asking the rest of the SES which one was going to let him down. He smells Serena’s breath and tells her thanks for showing up sober. The then complains about Joey Mercury losing his mask and says none of them would be anything without him. He said if they don’t actually do something to pack their bags.

    * Big Show b. Luke Gallows
    – Big Show gets the win via disqualification when he’s attacked by SES. After the match CM Punk removes his sling to show that his arm is in good condition.

    * WWE Intercontinental Champion Kofi Kingston b. Dolph Ziggler w/Vickie Guerrero via disqualification.
    – Referees ended up having to restrain Kingston who was going crazy.

    * Backstage, Jack Swagger says he doesn’t have time for stupid questions. Swagger says he’s going to beat up Rey, break his arms and throw him in the Gulf of Mexico.

    * Vickie Guerrero announced Michelle McCool will replace Layla in a match against Tiffany. The match is still for the WWE Women’s Championship.

    * WWE Women’s Champion Michelle McCool w/Layla b. Tiffany w/Kelly Kelly to retain.
    – Layla interfered, allowing McCool to get the win. Teddy Long came out and said there only needs to be one Women’s Champion and they can either decide for themselves or he’ll decide for them next week. They argue to end the segment.

    * Rey Mysterio vs. Jack Swagger in a no-disqualification match ended in no contest
    – They battled outside and Mysterio caused Swagger to fall into the water. Kane was outside and chokeslammed Rey into the water.

    Dark Match Main Event:

    * World Heavyweight Champion Kane b. Big Show in a Steel Cage Match to retain
    – After the match, Rey Mysterio’s music hit and he came out and fought with Kane. Mysterio ended up teaming with Big Show to take out Kane to end the show.

  • *Spoilers* TNA iMPACT! Tapings Results For Tonight

Credit to TNAsylum.com for this live report from Monday’s iMPACT! tapings:

The ECW Guys come to the ring and the cut a promo on Hardcore Justice. Brother Ray initially refused to join but eventually gave in. Hulk Hogan came out and thanked E-V 2.0 (Extreme Version 2.0) for bringing hardcore to TNA. He had a surprise for them but Abyss interrupted. Abyss said “they” weren’t happy. A match was made between Abyss and Tommy Dreamer, which would be fought under hardcore rules.

    1. Angelina Love defeated Sarita with the Botox Injection.

    2. Ink Inc defeated Orlando Jordan and Eric Young. During the match Young threw a mannequin in the ring but didn’t hit anyone. Ink Inc. pinned Orlando Jordan moments later. Weird!

Fortune (Flair, AJ Styles and Kazarian) came to the ring. Flair announced that he will face Jay Lethal in a Street Fight next week on Impact. Flair announced Beer Money as two more members of Fortune. James Storm claimed Beer Money would dominate the Motor City Machine Guns tonight in their Steel Cage Match. AJ Styles took the mic and said his title wasn’t a Global Title, but rather a TV Title. He said he would defend the TV Title in every country first by defending it against Rob Terry. Fortune went to leave but was interrupted by Kurt Angle, who said that AJ Styles is next.

    3. Motor City Machine Guns defeated Beer Money in a Steel Cage with the Neckbreaker/Big Splash Combo. Robert Roode got busted open early on. One of the Guns hit a huge dive from the top of the cage. This was said to be a very good match.

Matt Morgan came out to Mr. Anderson’s music. He called for the special mic entrance but it took a bit of demanding. He did a special intro ala Morgan. Anderson came out and cut a promo on Morgan, who thinks it’s funny that the mic Anderson used was the one that took him out last week.

Morgan offered up a free shot, but Anderson hit him with a nutshot. Morgan choked him until Jeff Hardy made the save. All of a sudden, two security members came in and attacked Hardy and Anderson. I believe the security guys were Shatter and Mikal Judas, but I might be mistaken. The agents came out and broke things up. Matt Morgan and the Security guys will face Mr. Anderson and Jeff Hardy in a handicap match tonight.

    4. Rob Terry defeated Kazarian. A very quick squash match with the Freakbuster.

    5. Jeff Hardy and Mr. Anderson defeated Matt Morgan, Murphy Gunner and Phil Shatter when Hardy hits the Swanton on Gunner. Apparently this was a horrible match as Gunner looked incredibly green on television. Matt Morgan left during the match.

Eric Bischoff came out and announced that on August 12, TNA would feature a TV special featuring PPV quality matches. Abyss came out and demanded a match against RVD, where Janice is hung above the ring and weapons are legal. Bischoff eventually agreed to the match.

Abyss was about to attack Bischoff when RVD made the save. Before Abyss could use Janice on RVD, the agents broke things up.

    6. Abyss defeated Tommy Dreamer in a Hardcore Match when he chokeslammed Tommy Dreamer on a Barbed Wire Board. After the match, Abyss went to attack Dreamer, but Raven came out for the save. Raven turned on Dreamer and gave him the DDT in honor of their ECW feud. The rest of the EV2.0 guys come out to end the show.

  • 5 Matches Confirmed For TNA’s “Whole F’N Show” TV Special

The August 12th episode of TNA iMPACT! (the first show after the Hard Justice ECW reunion PPV) will be a special PPV-caliber event dubbed “The Whole F’N Show.”

The show will be taped the night after Hardcore Justice and reports are that it will feature almost exclusively in-ring action with very few promos and storylines.

The following matches have been confirmed for the event:

    * Rob Van Dam vs. Abyss. “Janice” will be suspended above the ring and Eric Bischoff will serve as the special referee.

    * Kurt Angle vs. AJ Styles

    * Jeff Hardy has issued an open challenge for anybody to face him.

    * Beer Money vs. The Motor City Machineguns

    * Mr. Anderson vs. The Pope

    * The show opens with the Pros on the stage and the Rookies coming to the ring. Matt Striker announces there will be a kissing contest tonight hosted by Layla and Michelle McCool.

    * Husky Harris is up first for the kissing contest. McCool tells him to kiss her but he has to think about it. McCool interrupts his thinking and brings out Laredo’s own Margarita and out comes a fat Mexican woman. All the Rookies kissed her and as picked by her, Lucky Cannon was the winner. LayCool tell the Rookies that they each just won herpes.

    * Husky Harris beats Kaval.

    * Backstage segment with Kofi Kingston and Michael McGillicutty talking about fighting The Miz. Lucky Cannon comes in and says he wants to face Miz. Miz is watching everything and accepts the challenge to face the winner of McGillicutty vs. Lucky.

    * Alex Riley defeated Percy Watson.

    * The Miz defeated Michael McGillicutty in the main event. This was the best match of the night.

  • Jim Ross Blog: Monday’s RAW, Scouting Talent, Morrison-HBK

WWE Hall of Famer Jim Ross has updated his blog at JRsBarBQ.com with some commentary on the following topics:

Monday’s RAW: “Enjoyed Raw Monday night by and large. I do know this….if John Cena’s team doesn’t put their own personal agendas behind them then the Raw 7 has NO chance against The Nexus at Summer Slam. That point was made abundantly clear over the two hour broadcast from San Antonio. No unity=no win for Raw. “No win for you” ala Seinfeld’s ‘Soup Nazi.’ Got it? Good. :)”

Scouting Talent at FCW: “It’s back to Tampa for me this weekend to observe the FCW try out camp that likely will have over 50 individuals taking part in the process. Now seems to be a timely opportunity to get noticed and perhaps signing with WWE and assigned to FCW which needs more viable athletes and quality numbers in general.”

John Morrison The Next HBK? “I Tweeted @JRsBBQ that I liked John Morrison’s new beard and that I thought it made him look a little more rugged. Morrison is a gifted athlete who has ‘something’ that physically reminds me of a young HBK. One can only hope that Morrison can begin to approach the success that Shawn Michaels earned but that’s some king sized expectations. Nonetheless I think that Morrison can be a major player within WWE once his complete game comes together which simply takes time.”

  • Update On Chris Jericho’s WWE Contract Expiring This Year

Rich Ward, the guitarist in Chris Jericho’s metal band Fozzy, was a guest on the Monday Night Mayhem radio show this week and spoke about Jericho’s future after his WWE contract expires later this year. There’s been speculation that Jericho is looking to move on from WWE and focus on his entertainment career (music & acting). Here’s the recap:

Monday Night Mayhem with Rich Ward
Hosts: The Big Mosh, Jimmy Noonan, and “The Chairman of the Board,” Todd Vincent
Airs every Monday at 6:00 P.M. (CT)
    Show available at MondayNightMayhem.com.

The Band Working Around Chris Jericho’s WWE Schedule:

“In the early days it was more difficult, because we didn’t have chemistry worked out because Chris was so busy, not just with working in the WWE, but the travel days also, whenever there was a day off here and a day off there. Basically what we had to do was be super organized in how we structured things, and till the last couple of years, it started to fall into place to where when Chris is just sitting in a hotel room or something, he’s writing lyrics. I then take his lyrics and start building songs around it, and then I would send him the demos with me singing his lyrics, and then we start work back and forth through MP3’s. If it wasn’t for the modern age of the Internet, I don’t Fozzy could exist.”

Whether Chris Jericho Will Leave WWE When His Contract Expires This Year:

“He has told me that he has no plans on retiring, so as far as Chris stepping away from the ring, I have no idea if he has any plans to do that beyond the contract. I know from talking to him, and Chris’s business is his business, and never would I try to step and make announcements for him, but I think he told me that he’s contract negotiations with the WWE. With that in mind, I have no indications that he’s gonna take time off. I know he got two weeks off to do the UK run, and I know anytime we could get ‘Uncle Vinnie’ to give us a couple of weeks to go and play some rock shows in the UK, I feel like I owe him a steak dinner.”

    Fozzy’s Potential:

“To answer that honestly, I don’t even think about tomorrow. I’m so focused in the now and what I’m doing instead of looking down the road. I feel like that has worked for me, and maybe other people it helps to plans things, but I find for my music career (in general) if I’m touring with Stuck Mojo, I focus 1,000 percent on that. If I’m with Chris, and we’re on tour with Fozzy, I don’t think about Stuck Mojo, and I don’t think about what I’m gonna have for dinner. I think Fozzy could go on until no one wants to hear another one of our songs, and we will continue to play to out four or five fan club members. We will just continue to rock on at a very high level of proficiency.”

  • Hulk Hogan Wants To Be The Next “Billy Mays” TV Pitchman

TNA’s Hulk Hogan is planning his next career move outside of the wrestling industry – he wants to be “the new Billy Mays” and become the best TV pitchman around. According to RadarOnline.com, Hogan recently linked up with fellow reality star and infomercial king, Kevin Harrington, to promote his latest product, pumMax – a biodegradable pumice-based hand cleanser. But that’s just the beginning, as Hogan’s lawyer David Houston tells Daily Radar.

“Terry brings decades’ worth of charisma and credibility to the marketplace,” Houston said. “Billy [Mays’] unfortunate passing kind of left a hole. We all agree that he certainly has some big shoes to fill as far as Billy Mays is concerned, but I don’t think that any of us doubt that he has the ability to do it.”

“He went into a semi-retirement at one point, but after the divorce and settlement of personal injury litigation he’s putting his career back on track.”

Hogan is no stranger to being an product pitchman, having done commercials for Honey Nut Cheerios, Right Guard deodorant, Arbys and more. “I think it’s more of a continuation as opposed to a new beginning,” said Houston.

  • Details On Paul Heyman’s New Online “Social Fighting Game”

Big thanks to reader Brandon Lee who attended the big Comic-Con convention over the weekend from San Diego, California and providing these details of Paul Heyman’s new project:

I was at the Top Cow presentation on Saturday, and was there for the Paul Heyman announcement of his new project with former New Line Cinema exec Jeff Katz, who used to work for WCW in the late 1990s. The presentation was opened up by the legendary Marc Silvestri, who ran down Top Cow’s big projects for 2010, and then it was Katz’s turn.

I need to say that if you haven’t seen the footage from the Wowio Yacht on Friday, go out of your way to see it. Heyman, Samoa Joe, Shane “Hurricane” Helms, Katz, and several others were on a panel. When Katz started to hype the announcement, Heyman got all sarcastic and started saying “oh yeah, it’ll redefine the industry, biggest announcement ever, no one will ever be the same, it’s so huge we can’t contain it, we’re going to make the announcement on a pay per view.”

So Katz brought up Heyman, who joked about the people who preceded them, since they would curse, and then apologize. Heyman said “this is a pretty cool fucking idea, and if I offended anyone with my language, I don’t apologize for it.” That got a lot of laughs.

So, the project is based on the social networking applications “Mafia Wars” and “Farmville,” which are super popular on Facebook and other social networking sites. Heyman described the project as “all fighting and fight-entertainment forms, from MMA to Wrestling to Boxing” and gave a bunch of “what if” scenarios of UFC fighters against pro wrestlers or top big time boxers against wrestlers or MMA fighters.

Heyman said the project is scheduled to launch 4th quarter of 2010. Katz said he originally wanted to do a wrestling-only game, but Heyman said he wanted it to be bigger better stronger.

That may have been a tribute to Chris Bell, who was there talking with Heyman, Samoa Joe, and Hurricane Helms. Bell was the writer and director of the documentary “Bigger Stronger Faster.”

In the hallway outside the room, they were all very accommodating with autographs and posing with fans. Katz said he has been trying to get this going for almost two years. Samoa Joe was joking with a lot of fans about his kidnapping and re-appearance. Heyman said he was “lost as hell” at Comic Con and “woefully ill-informed on the entire culture,” but that he was getting a 1st class education on the entire Comic Con life from Helms.

Katz kept stressing the gaming app would debut on his website, GeekWeek.com by the end of the year.

  • JR Blog: TNA Hard Justice, Paul Heyman, Joey Styles & Mmore

WWE Hall of Famer Jim Ross

WWE Hall of Famer Jim Ross has updated his blog at JRsBarBQ.com with some commentary on the following topics:

TNA’s Hard Justice PPV: “We’re getting lots of questions on the revisited, ECW TV storyline being used by TNA. For the record, I hope that all wrestling organizations do well as the individuals who comprise the various company’s rosters are largely passionate fans living out their dreams. I’m not a ‘dream squasher.’ Do I think that this matter will be successful? I don’t know. It might be o.k. for a one off sort of deal for a company that needs a ‘hit.’ Time will answer the ‘will it be successful question’ which is somewhere subjective in itself as what is the true definition of ‘success’ in wrestling? It varies by company, that’s for sure.”

Paul Heyman: “Paul Heyman will not be a part of this presentation which does it no favors. Heyman was the strategic mastermind behind the original ECW that grew to have a passionate, cult following and lasted much longer than many ‘experts’ predicted when ECW started up primarily due to Heyman’s leadership and creative vision along with a locker room full of passionate athletes who were in their prime and loved kicking ass.”

Joey Styles: “No, Joey Styles has no interest in broadcasting again in WWE on a full time basis, or so he has said to many, and has expressed his happiness in working to build WWE.com to an even bigger brand. Joey and I hope to broadcast one match together some day in the future for WWEClassics.com or WWE 24/7 On Demand.”
