Jerry Lawler Reflects On Near-Fatal Medical Emergency Last Year On RAW

One year ago today (September 10th), WWE Hall of Famer Jerry “The King” Lawler experienced a near-fatal cardiac arrest live on Monday Night RAW.

It was widely reported that Lawler had suffered a heart attack, but he clarified in an interview last spring that he went through Sudden Cardiac Arrest, which according to the Mayo Clinic, “usually results from an electrical disturbance in your heart that disrupts its pumping action, stopping blood flow to the rest of your body.”

Lawler remarked on the one year anniversary of the occasion this morning via Twitter. He wrote,

“Thanks for all the thoughts & prayers from everyone about cardiac arrest 1 year ago today…thank God & Doc Sampson everything is fine now!”

Luger Says McMahon Has Offered Him A Helping Hand, Talks Elizabeth, Beating Hogan For WCW Title & More

Lex Luger appeared on Interactive Wrestling Radio where he discussed such topics as his shocking appearance on the debut edition of WCW Monday Nitro, defeating Hollywood Hogan for the WCW World Heavyweight Championship, his brief stint in TNA Wrestling, his relationship with Sting, and the passing of Miss Elizabeth.

Contrary to popular belief, Luger and Vince McMahon are on good terms now. During the interview, Luger notably reveals that the WWE head has offered him assistance following his numerous battles in recent years. Highlights from the interview are as follows:

“THE TOTAL PACKAGE” LEX LUGER

Literally 18 years to the day after Lex Luger shocked the wrestling world and helped make the debut episode of WCW Nitro a success, we had occasion to sit down with the legendary former wrestling great. It was an amazing experience to speak with such an accomplished wrestling performer so candidly about his unique, often difficult journey through life over the past 10 years or so. From moment one, shooting the stuff about the upcoming football season, Luger seems happy for the first time in a long time and as a long-time fan and journalist, I can tell you that was a great thing to hear.

The interview, to promote his great new book called ‘Wrestling with the Devil”, discusses everything from career highlights to life lowlights and his finding of Jesus Christ. The book gives you such an amazing peak into the life of a wrestler who was amongst the absolute elite of our business and his rocky ride since his active wrestling career came to a close. I strongly suggest you picky it up. Tyndale, who also released NFL legend Tony Dungy’s book, did an amazing job piecing together a presentation in this book that both showcases Lex Luger’s wrestling career and, as it should be, his personal life. You can buy it now at book stores everywhere and at www.Amazon.com.

To listen to this interview, visit www.WrestlingEpicenter.com. It is available on YouTube, MP3, and on our Facebook page. It is 100% free. No registrations. Just come and listen! And, check out the store if you like what you hear to help us pay our expenses to keep it free!

On the release of his book: “So far, so good.” He had help writing the book and says that getting the right people to help him write the biography was why the release was pushed back a few times. He jokes that the delays were entirely on him but is thrilled to have it out now.

On Sting: “Still are best of friends…we talk all the time.” Luger says he was honored to speak for Sting during his TNA Hall of Fame induction and maintains a close friendship with Steve Borden to this very day. Sting also wrote the foreward to Luger’s autobiography which some, including James, say is worth the price of the book in and of itself as it is so well done.

On contacting WWE regarding possible use of pictures for the book: “I have a great relationship with them now.” Luger said that he could have gotten pictures from them for his book if he had asked, but the publishers opted to have personal pictures used instead. He feels it was the right move as the personal pictures make it a more personal feel rather than a career retrospective.

On his relationship with Vince McMahon: “I know he wants to come off as “Bad Boy Billionare” but he’s not,” said Luger. Luger elaborates saying that when he was down and out after wrestling with all the problems he faced, Vince always went out of his way to check in on him and offer help. He feels not enough people realize that Vince is a genuinely good person on top of business man. But, he says that is probably by Vince’s own design.

Comparing the WWF from the NWA/WCW he previously knew: “Vince is a creative genius,” says Luger. He puts over the great things he did in the NWA like being a member of the Horsemen but he loved the Narcissist character and felt it could have gone further. When he was approached about the “Yankee Doodle Dandy” patriotic gimmick later dubbed the “American Rebel” by Stan Lane on commentary, Luger says he remembers speaking to Vince about it and not being sure if it would work. Vince said, “When you step off that boat, you’re going to be a red, white, and blue hero.” He says he was right and it was an amazing run.

On jumping to WCW for the first Nitro: “It was huge! To have worked a WWF house show the night before and the following night be on Nitro?”, says Luger. James mentions, as is touched upon in the book, it was the start of the contractual system that we know today where every name has a no compete clause and a set deal.

On beating Hollywood Hulk Hogan for the WCW Title: “I didn’t know until I got to the ring!”, Luger says. Luger says that Hogan felt the WCW fans needed a positive as the nWo had been getting the better of them for so long. He was honored that he felt strongly enough to choose him to be the guy to capture the belt. “It was only a week, but it was huge!” He then jokes about the after match celebration and the Giant (Big Show) carrying him around like a little baby. James says it felt special because they stuck with the celebration. They then joke about how long it took to scrub off the nWo paint.

On Miss Elizabeth: “I had a very negative influence on her at the time.” He felt that he needed to acknowledge all his mistakes in the book in order to make it a complete and honest account of his life. He approached Elizabeth’s passing with honesty and acknowledges the level of tragedy.

On his brief return to the ring in 2003 with TNA: “I was a mess back then,” Luger said. On the appearances (a tag match with Jarrett against Sting and AJ and an attack on AJ where he slammed him over the top through a table weeks later), Luger said he remembers that AJ Styles was an absolutely incredible athlete and an incredible guy as well. He says he’s glad to see TNA has a strong foundation but obviously is not yet in any position to compete with the WWE.

On his finding of Jesus Christ: “I was basically an Athiest,” said Luger. His journey to salvation began prior in 2006 while in jail. But, it was tested and made stronger in 2007 when he attended what we lovingly call the “Fiasco in Frisco” fan convention at the Cow palace. He suffered a muscle injury in his spine that made him paralyzed. He couldn’t move his arms or legs. “Could you imagine, a guy who worked out religiously not being able to move?”, says Luger. He says when he asked the doctor how long he’d be without the ability to move, he was told forever. Thankfully, that has not turned out to be the case. He can walk and drive now. He says he is grateful to have that kind of movement back and does not take it for granted.

“Magnus, due to an unforeseen issue, will not be appearing on tonight’s Impact Wrestling on Spike TV. Titus O’Neil On Darren Young Announcing He’s Gay, Reaction From WWE Locker Room

Appearing on 4th & Pain, Titus O’Neil talks openly and in-depth about the reaction of the WWE locker room to Darren Young’s decision to reveal he was gay. He says the reaction has been “very positive.”

On Darren Young: “Darren is a great friend of mine away from the ring. I consider him a part of my family. My kids call him ‘Uncle Darren.’ They run, they play, they joke with him. For him to exhibit the courage that he did to go and discuss his sexual orientation to the world was a brave move to some, but to me is just an act of what type of man he is. You can only live behind certain people’s stereotypes or certain barriers in life for so long. At some point you have to say ‘man, to hell with it. I am who I am. I do what I do and I’m going to be who I want to be.’ ”

O’Neil says he’s know about Young’s sexual orientation for “a while,” but that it was irrelevant.

On how the reaction would be different in NFL locker room: “The football locker room and the WWE locker room are two completely different things.”

He says that unlike an NFL locker room where 53 players comprise a single unit, the wrestling locker room is constructed of more individuals which lends itself to “more shots” for backstabbing.

“If you play a position, you play a position. if you don’t play a position, you’re really not a threat. In WWE, everybody really plays the same position. Everybody is trying to be a WWE Superstar. So, whatever shot you can take, whether it be if a person is gay or not, they’re going to try to make something of it. Whereas in football, whether a person is gay or not it doesn’t matter. If they go out and make plays, they make plays. Period. I can assure you there are guys, whether they came out openly gay or not, there gay guys in NFL and college locker rooms.”

– Since 2011, WWE has been heavily promoting the anti-bullying campaign ‘Be a STAR,’ which carries a mission to “ensure a positive and equitable social environment for everyone regardless of age, race, religion or sexual orientation through grassroots efforts beginning with education and awareness.” The program, however, has drawn great criticism as many of the sports-entertainment organization’s on-air scenes and storylines tend to counter the goals of the campaign, such as Ryback’s bullying persona and numerous instances of Jim Ross being ridiculed. Stephanie McMahon, Executive Vice President, Creative, addressed criticism of the campaign in a Twitter message on Wednesday.

A fan asked McMahon, “What do u say to those fans who say @WWE is going against their own Anti-Bullying campaign w/ showing HHH & Ryback bullying?” In response, she said the bullying that occurs on WWE programming should be strictly viewed as entertainment.

Santino Marella Reveals Target Date For Return To WWE, Discusses Injuries & Ohio Valley Wrestling

Santino Marella, who has been sidelined much of 2013 due to a neck injury, revealed in a rare out-of-character interview with Live Audio Wrestling that he is targeting a return to WWE within the next two weeks. Highlights of the WWE Superstar’s interview with Dan Lovranski and John Pollock promoting his Battle Arts Academy that is set to open in Mississauga, Ontario, are as follows:

His return that he’s pegging for next month: “September, early September. Whether it’s the 2nd or the 9th, I don’t know. I’m hoping it’s the 9th, because it’ll be a homecoming for me, born and raised in Mississauga. I would love to hear my music start, and just see the faces of these Torontonians going berzerk. One, because they appreciate the comedy. Two, because there are actually a lot of Italians in Toronto. Plus, I’ll have family and friends in the audience, and that will be a real special moment for me.”

His neck injury and full explanation of why he’s been gone: “My neck was bad in March; I had a procedure done called a facet rhizotomy, where they do these injections, and there’s a little axillary nerve that comes off. I basically had several things wrong with my neck; bulging discs, herniated discs, stenosis, degenerating discs, but the one thing that was bugging me at the time was arthritis. Out of all that, arthritis doesn’t even sound cool.

“My neck has been fine basically since that procedure, and I did the whole European tour in April and it didn’t hurt at all. But then when I renegotiated my contract a year ago, I wanted a little bit of time off just to heal my entire body, spend a little time with my family and live a little bit of life. When you’re successful and you’re doing well, you’re really five days a week, six days a week. Sometimes you won’t be home for two or three weeks. I missed a lot of things; I missed a lot of birthdays and baptisms and weddings, and all that kind of stuff. I just wanted to be home a little bit. I tell my friends, “You know what’s better than being Santino Marella around the world? Being Anthony Carelli in Mississauga.

Background of Boris Alexiev character: “I got to OVW. Rip Rogers, on my second day, calls me “Boris.” And I’m like, “Boris?” Some guy looks at me and goes, “Yup, that’s your new nickname.” I’m like, “Boris? He just called me Boris, and now I’m Boris?” So then everyone called me Boris, and I had this epiphany while I was falling asleep one night. I’m like, “Wait a second, I’ll be Boris. I can be this Russian special forces trained fighter. I get to do all my Battlarts style wrestling, and I could incorporate my Judo, and stuff like that. So then Boris was born. Paul Heyman was the guy that took me aside and said, “Hey, we want you at OVW TV next week.” I was freaking, I’m like “Oh my God, this is happening. I’m gonna be on OVW TV!” I couldn’t sleep for days. And then, Boris was this animal killer. I brought the character to life, beyond a shadow of a doubt. When my music hit, there was absolute terror and fear in the OVW arena. Somebody was gonna get their butt whipped, and I came out and I delivered on a daily basis. I even had to apologize to people beforehand, “Sorry, brother. This is not gonna be fun.” It was just a demolition of whomever was in the ring.”

“That was the character that got me hired, got me noticed. The agents came to OVW; I wasn’t signed, and they saw this character, like, “Wow.” It was something new, something fresh. Of course, being 5’10”, 220 lbs, it wasn’t something that could translate to the big leagues with guys like Chris Masters, Kane, Umaga and everybody.”

The audio interview is available here.
