The Honky Tonk Man On His Recent WWE Appearance, Rhythm and Blues & More

The Honky Tonk Man was on Inside The Ropes radio show last night and here are some of the highlights:

Being paired with Greg “The Hammer” Valentine and why it didn’t reach it’s potential: “Rhythm and Blues thing was something that was going to rejuvinate both myself and Greg Valentine. But Greg was always very much “I’m Greg, I’ve got blond hair, my father’s Johnny Valentine, I’m a wrestler” I said “Listen, if you don’t do this, dye your hair black and at least give us a shot, he’s gonna fire both of us” And that’s eventually what happened because Greg just did not try to make it work. But now after all these years, he tells me he wished he’d went with it. We were supposed to get the Tag titles from The Harts. We were going to win the tag team titles, but he just did not want to do it and it showed.”

Why did he go back to WWE now: “I really think it was the fact that they did call me and ask me to come back and do the old school Raw. It was a tipping point. And then the spot that I was given on that show, I could not have asked for any better. If they had asked me, I don’t think I could’ve dreamt of anything better, I was extremely proud of how they did it. It’s hard to describe. And for them to announce me as “The Greatest Intercontinental Champion of all time” I was really taken away with that moment of having them announce me like that on TV in front of a worldwide audience.”

Will he return to WWE TV: “I would love to do something there on a full time basis, whatever they would have for me to do, because I think I can contribute something, somewhere, somehow. Do they need me there full time? Absolutely not. They don’t need anybody. But sure I’ll do some more stuff with them.”

WrestleMania 29 Grosses A Record $72 Million, Estimated 1.2 Million Buys

WWE announced Thursday that WrestleMania 29 set a record as the highest grossing event in company history, earning $72 million. The figure is up from the $67 million grossed by WrestleMania 28 last year.

WWE issued a press release stating that the show will once again exceed 1 million pay-per-view buys worldwide. A preliminary estimate revealed to Variety show that WrestleMania 29 will reach 1.2 million buys on pay-per-view, less than the record 1.3 million sold for last year’s event. However, it was noted that the number could still increase.

Highest Grossing WrestleMania® Ever

STAMFORD, Conn., April 25, 2013 – WWE® (NYSE:WWE) today announced that WrestleMania 29, held Sunday, April 7 at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey, grossed an excess of $72 million, the highest grossing event in WWE history. In addition, WrestleMania 29 will once again exceed 1 million global pay-per-view buys and attracted a sold out crowd of 80,676 fans from all 50 states and 34 countries at MetLife Stadium.

New Orleans, Louisiana will be the site of next year’s WrestleMania, which will take place Sunday, April 6, 2014 at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome. Ticket information will be announced later this year.

Nikki Bella Compared To Michelle McCool – Does She Have Heat Backstage For Dating A Top WWE Star?

Though Nikki Bella is romantically linked to John Cena, unlike retired wrestler Michelle McCool, there is no animosity toward her among her WWE co-workers for dating a top star. It was noted within some circles recently that McCool had “tremendous heat” among some of her peers when she rose to the top years ago, but was “bullet proof” because of her romantic affiliation with The Undertaker. Nikki and twin sister Brie are well-liked among their peers, with organization officials holding them in high regard.

It’s also said that with Nikki dating Cena, the twin duo can “get away with a lot.”

McCool has been greatly criticized over the years for taking the fast track to WWE glory. After entering an intimate relationship with The Undertaker in late 2007 (who she married in June 2010), many critics attributed her position in the company to her influential partner rather than her ability to perform. Months after her spring 2011 retirement from the squared circle, the four-time champion was asked in an interview why she has received so much flack from her colleagues.

Dan Murphy of Inside Wrestling asked McCool, “I know you like to keep some things private and this was never announced, but you did marry The Undertaker. He’s obviously a veteran and icon in the business with a lot of influence. Was it the Diva Search background or having the relationship with someone like him that’s responsible for the heat and resentment you got?”

She responded, “Bottom line: People in our business are always going to look to find reasons to see the negative in somebody and to become resentful. I don’t really know where it began: probably with me getting the tag as “Diva Search reject.” But I don’t know anybody who, if they had an opportunity like the Diva Search, they wouldn’t jump at it. If they didn’t jump at it, they’d be idiots.

“People can say what they want to say, but at the end of the day, I can look at myself in the mirror. I know how hard I fought. I know how many storylines I pitched. I know how hard I worked in the ring. I can’t tell you the number of times I was one of the first people at the arenas or at TV, constantly trying to better myself. I can honestly say that my hard work paid off. My resilience paid off. My persistence paid off. That’s all there is to it. People are always going to say what they want to say and believe what they want to believe, but that’s the bottom line.”

Update On Rosa Mendes’ Status With WWE After Being Sent Home From European Tour

News surfaced this week that Milena Roucka, known as Rosa Mendes, was sent home from WWE’s ongoing European tour. The sports-entertainment organization issued a statement to online news outlets stating, “Milena Roucka (Rosa Mendes) left the international tour for personal reasons.”

According to this week’s issue of the Wrestling Observer, the 33-year-old had been “partying too much on the tour,” with one company source describing her as “a mess.” Talent and other employees were under the belief that she would probably not rejoin the company on the road for a while, but that she has not been suspended.

PWInsider.com noted that the WWE Diva has a history of similar issues, which prompted company officials to send her back home.

Mendes addressed the matter Monday afternoon via Twitter, writing, “Just wanted to let all my #Mendesluverz that I’m ok. I had to take care of some personal matters. Thank you for all your support. Love you.”

Mendes manages the real-life cousin tandem of Primo and Epico, and is considered the star of the group due to her appearance and charisma. Though Primo and Epico are well-liked within the company and considered good workers, the general feeling is that they lack charisma and therefore aren’t heavily promoted.

The Rock Responds To Michael Bay Telling Him To “Grow Up”, Cody Rhodes Challenges Morgan Freeman

– As reported earlier, Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson was forced to miss Monday night’s Los Angeles premiere of his latest film, Pain & Gain, due to an emergency hernia operation earlier in the day. Speaking to E! Online on the red carpet, movie director Michael Bay suggested the injury stemmed from Johnson’s wrestling exploits.

“He was pushing it too hard,” Bay said. “[He] needs to grow up and stop wrestling 300-pound men.”

Johnson responded to Bay’s remark via Twitter this afternoon, writing, “Funny sh*t! Michael Bay joked I should stop wrestling 300lb men. I agree – I’ll switch to women. #ALLPainNOGain.”

– Cody Rhodes has challenged Morgan Freeman to a wrestling duel.

When asked which celebrity he would like to wrestle, the WWE Superstar said the famous actor, film director, and narrator could lend his authoritative voice to the bout.

“Morgan Freeman, because I feel like I could win because he’s old; although I’m sure he’s tough,” Rhodes told www.tv3.ie in an interview promoting WWE’s annual November tour of the UK. “But then we could sell it and he could narrate the match, like he narrates everything. He could explain everything because he’s such a great storyteller he could tell the story of me beating him. That would be wonderful.”

While Rhodes initially pursued an acting career in Hollywood before officially entering the family business in 2006, he has no ambitions to launch a career now.

“I always said absolutely not, but if a man was to walk in and tell me, ‘Alright, you’re going to be in ‘Fast and the Furious 35’, for instance, I’d be running with him,” said Rhodes. “I would only want to do it as a pro wrestler, like Cody Rhodes from WWE in something, because my home is the ring, I don’t really have any ambition to platform into another form of entertainment.”

Triple H Responds To Michael Bay’s Dig At The Rock, Ziggler Hypes “Pain & Gain”

The official YouTube account of WWE website released the following video of WWE World Heavyweight Champion Dolph Ziggler presenting a special clip of the new Michael Bay film that hits theaters on Friday, Pain & Gain, starring Mark Wahlberg and Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson.

Johnson was forced to miss Monday night’s Los Angeles premiere of the film due to an emergency hernia operation earlier in the day. Speaking to E! Online on the red carpet, Bay suggested the injury stemmed from Johnson’s wrestling exploits. “He was pushing it too hard,” Bay said. “[He] needs to grow up and stop wrestling 300-pound men.”

Triple H, Chief Operating Officer of WWE, humorously responded to Bay’s remark on Twitter this afternoon:

– Ryback revealed in the May 2013 issue of WWE Magazine that one of his goals is to go one-on-one with The Undertaker at WrestleMania.

“For [The Undertaker] to be able to last this long in a business where you see the roster changing every year, it’s really amazing,” Ryback remarked. “I know it’s one of my goals to step in the ring at WrestleMania with him someday. It didn’t happen this year, but I’m hoping I’ll be at the very top of that list next year.”

More information on WWE Magazine is available here.

– Former WWE Superstar Carlito took a lighthearted jab at World Heavyweight Champion Dolph Ziggler on Twitter Thursday over the one-time Wellness offender’s physique. After revealing his goal to become “shredded” again following a muscle-gaining program, the 34-year-old jokingly said he’ll look similar to the WWE Superstar, but with muscles.

“Bulking process is done! Now back to being shredded!” wrote Carlito. “Im gonna look like a dolph ziggler…well, if he had muscles!!”

Baltimore Sun writer Arda Ocal revealed the following tidbit via Twitter concerning the legendary career of WWE Hall of Famer J.J. Dillon: “JJ Dillon told me on top of his head, 3,250 matches in his active career. He kept a log of every match/mileage for tax purposes.”

Triple H Announces New WWE Performance Center In Orlando

WWE COO Triple H and Florida Gov. Rick Scott announced Thursday the opening of the WWE Performance Center in Orlando. The sports-entertainment organization issued the following press release touting the opening.

NEW WWE® PERFORMANCE CENTER OPENING

STAMFORD, Conn., April 18, 2013 – Opening this summer, the WWE state-of-the-art Performance Center will serve as the new home to WWE’s talent developmental system, recently re-branded NXT® and create nearly 100 high-wage jobs in Orlando, Florida.

With 26,000 square-feet, seven training rings, a world-class strength and conditioning program and cutting-edge edit and production facilities, the new Performance Center will give WWE the ability to train more potential performers than ever before through a comprehensive program including in-ring training, physical preparedness and character development. The new center will be the training ground for talent that includes former professional and collegiate athletes, Olympians and entertainers, and will offer a best-in-class sports medicine program creating a central location for all WWE talent to receive the best care both in and out of the ring.

“Our economy has created nearly 300,000 new private sector jobs in just over two years, meaning that thousands of Florida families now have the opportunity to pursue their dreams,” said Governor Rick Scott. “WWE could have chosen anywhere in the world to house this new global performance center – and they chose the Sunshine State. Today’s announcement that WWE will create nearly 100 more jobs for families in Central Florida is further proof that everything we do is geared towards job creation and it’s working.”

“We are so excited that WWE has chosen to establish its training and talent development operations in Central Florida,” said Teresa Jacobs, Mayor of Orange County. “In addition to strengthening our burgeoning entertainment production industry, the WWE Performance Center brings high-value jobs, capital investment and continued economic expansion to our area.”

Today’s announcement solidifies WWE’s presence in Orlando and evolves WWE’s partnership with Full Sail University. Last year, WWE and Full Sail announced an innovative partnership that moved live tapings of WWE NXT series, WWE’s weekly one-hour show that broadcasts on WWE.com and in more than 60 countries worldwide, to Full Sail Live, the university’s state-of-the-art performance venue. The partnership, which created a new student scholarship fund, also allows students of the university’s entertainment-focused degree programs, including Film, Show Production, Digital Arts and Design, Internet Marketing and Entertainment Business, to gain real-world experience alongside WWE production staff during WWE NXT tapings.

“The WWE Performance Center and our partnership with Full Sail University are critical to the future of our company,” said Paul “Triple H®” Levesque, Executive Vice President, Talent and Live Events, WWE. “Orlando is now the home to the next generation of WWE Superstars.”

“Collaborating with WWE has elevated the education experience here at Full Sail University by creating many opportunities for our students to gain hands-on experience by being mentored by some of the best minds in the entertainment production industry,” said Garry Jones, President of Full Sail University. “We are excited to welcome WWE to the neighborhood and can’t wait to see what the future holds for this evolving partnership.”

Former WWE Wrestler Suffering From Kidney Failure, Says WWE Won’t Help Him

The following statement was issued by Robert Horne, who fans may remember as Mabel’s tag team partner Mo in Men on a Mission: For years Sir Mo, along with perennial tag team partner King Mabel, entertained millions as part of the WWE. Getting their start in the Carolinas and later moving to the USWA working for Jerry Lawler the duo quickly became one of the hottest tag teams in wrestling and caught the eye of WWE CEO Vince McMahon who brought them to New York and gave them a huge push that included a run with the WWE World Tag Team Championship.

After Mo finished up with the WWE he returned to Memphis and the USWA as well as other off-shoot promotions in the area and then it would seem Mo would fade into obscurity.

Though Sir Mo was little more than a memory to hardcore fans, Bobby Horne continued to be part of the business, starting his own promotion, running shows and helping up and coming stars realize their dream. What many do not know is that while Horne was helping others he was actually the one in need, suffering from kidney failure.

For over seven years Horne has battled with kidney disease that is now end stage renal failure and he undergoes dialysis three times a week as he awaits a kidney transplant.

Dialysis is a process that helps remove waste and excess water from the blood and takes at minimum four hours each time but the after effects can leave one feeling drained and depleted for hours after it is finished. Horne has to receive dialysis treatment three times a week and is often found resting the rest of the day when it is over. There are good days and bad days even with dialysis and the fluid build-up has an effect on more than just his kidneys, it also takes a toll mentally.

“My faith gets me through most days,” Horne said. “That and the fans who have always been there for me, they are a great comfort too.”

Doctors say Horne is a good candidate for a transplant and is on the list but that list is ever increasing and often by the time a suitable donor is found, it is too late. Horne is fortunate though because his step-daughter has offered to donate one of her kidneys and is willing to put off her college and career plans to help her step-father.

“I’m blessed in so many ways and what she is doing, she is an angel. God love her she is an angel.” Horne said.

Even though it would seem all is right with the world, a kidney from a willing and compatible donor and the fortitude to carry on even though the surgery is very risky for both he and his step-daughter, things are far from easy for the former WWE SuperStar.

Transplant surgery is one of the most expensive operations to perform and can exceed a million dollars depending on what organs are replaced and how much time is involved in the procedure. For Horne this surgery will cost upwards of $150,000 of which he must raise 20% or $30,000 before doctors will schedule the operation.

“The WWE has made money from my likeness for 20 years and will continue to do so after I am dead and gone. They donate millions from a corporate account to help people in the ghetto and they have spent hundreds of thousands on rehab for people. I asked them for help and they sent me a couple of small boxes of merchandise worth maybe a couple hundred dollars to auction off,” Horne lamented.

“Maybe I should turn into an alcoholic or a drug addict or get arrested for DUI since that seems to be the kind of people they (WWE) are quick to help,” he added. “I’ve never had a drug problem but I have been dealing with kidney failure for seven years and three on dialysis but they (WWE) are not willing to help anyone with legitimate medical issues.”

A benefit show that was scheduled in April to help raise funds to defray the costs for Horne had to be canceled. “I have to go to Charlotte for more tests, to make sure I am healthy enough for the surgery. I have to lose about 20 more pounds and come up with the money before they (doctors) will even consider it though,” Horne stated.

Out of sight out of mind seems to be a disease many veterans of the squared circle suffer from, they are all too often forgotten about once they are no longer on TV or not part of a national wrestling group. There are a number of former wrestlers who are dealing with lingering injuries and medical problems who have to suffer because they do not have the resources to seek the proper care and sometimes surgery. Although many believe some of the veterans “made tons of money” while they were in the spotlight that is not often the case since in the 80s and 90s wrestlers were responsible for their own transportation, lodging and food as well as trying to maintain a home and family.

There have been campaigns using platforms like Kickstarter and IndieGoGo to raise funds to help some of those in need get capital for much needed surgery including Scott Hall and Marty Janetty. Such a campaign is currently being considered for Horne and there are other benefit shows in the developmental stage but for now Horne remains optimistic and hopeful.

“I thank God every day he lets me see the sunshine.”

WWE Adds Another TNA Wrestler To Its Alumni Section, Former Diva Wrestling Again, Eve Torres

– The official WWE website continues its trend of acknowledging talent affiliated with TNA Wrestling as Mickie James is this week’s addition to the Alumni section. WWE writes of the five-time Women’s Champion and one-time Divas Champion, “Here’s to the crazy ones. Over the course of a brief but memorable WWE career, Mickie James underwent a stunning transformation from psychotic fanatic to one of the most beloved female competitors ever to step inside the squared circle. Mickie might have been a peppy, energetic sweetheart, but she was also as dangerous in the ring as any that came before her.

Other TNA talent recently profiled by WWE include Victoria (a/k/a Tara), Kurt Angle and The Dudley Boyz. Jeff Hardy, Rob Van Dam, Sting and Tiffany (a/k/a Taryn Terrell) are also featured in the Alumni section.

– Former WWE Diva Kristal Marshall is returning to the ring as she has been announced to compete in a tag team match tomorrow night in Fall River, Massachusetts. Maria Kanellis is also scheduled to appear as she will accompany “Prodigy” Mike Bennett for his match against Jason Blade.

The Rock Issues Update On WrestleMania Injury, WWE To Make Announcement Thursday In Orlando

– Former WWE Champion Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson has issued an update on his claim of an abdominal tear injury mid-way through his match with John Cena at WrestleMania.

Johnson wrote on Twitter Wednesday afternoon, “Injury update: Physical therapy starts tomorrow. Hardcore training starts today. Thank U guys for the love. 5 weeks out..#RoadToHercules.”

Johnson had previously indicated on Twitter that he believes he suffered the injury while delivering the Rock Bottom to Cena during the bout. Last Saturday, Johnson revealed that he and his physician had elected to not re-attach tendons to his pelvis as part of the rehabilitation process. “They’ll just scar up,” he noted.

– According to the Orlando Sentinal, WWE is scheduled to make an announcement tomorrow at 11:30 a.m. in Orlando, Florida, regarding a “new developmental.” State Gov. Rick Scott, Orange County Mayor Teresa Jacobs, WWE Executive Vice President, Talent and Live Events Paul Levesque (a/k/a Triple H) and Garry Jones, president of Full Sail University, are expected to attend the conference.

WWE representatives would not provide any additional details to the publication. The Sentinal notes that “several wrestling-insider websites” have speculated that the WWE will open a training facility.

WWE Upset With Negative Crowd Reaction To Maria Menounos At Hall Of Fame Induction Ceremony

As widely reported, Extra! host and occasional wrestler Maria Menounos was booed heavily by fans while inducting former WWE Champion Bob Backlund into the WWE Hall of Fame at Madison Square Garden two weeks ago. This week’s issue of the Wrestling Observer reports that multiple WWE employees were upset with the crowd’s unwelcoming reaction to the television presenter and undefeated grappler, particularly since they love affiliations with celebrities and with her subsequent letter acknowledging the negative response, it got out that a strong portion of their fanbase lack proper manners, refinement and decency.

Menounos’ letter stated: Dear fellow WWE fans and members of the wrestling press,

As you know, I had the honor of inducting my friend, Bob Backlund, into the WWE Hall of Fame. The fans were a little rough as another inductee and friend, Donald Trump, would likewise experience. It’s understandable as we are not pro wrestlers and the honesty of the WWE fans is what makes it fun. However, I did the speech mainly to tell the world all the amazing things about Bob and I fear some of those things were not heard.

Below is my speech. I’m hoping you’ll print it for a good friend, a great champion, and one of the most incredible human beings I know.

Thanks and God Bless,
Maria Menounos.

===== Maria’s Hall of Fame speech =====

To induct anyone into the WWE Hall of Fame puts you in the company of the greatest artists, athletes and performers in the entire world. I CHALLENGE ANYONE who disagrees to show me another kind of entertainer who can recite monologues, in character, without the use of teleprompters and before world audiences, performing improv drama and comedy while flying through the air and taking bumps, 300 nights a year.

But for me tonight is even more special for I am not just inducting anyone into the WWE Hall of Fame. I’m inducting someone who encapsulates the word champion. Someone whom I’m a great fan of…Someone whom is my friend.

Growing up Greek and not speaking English, wrestling was one of the few things on TV I’d watch and be able to understand. I was five when Bob Backlund lost his title to The Sheik. I was 14 when “Mr. Backlund” returned. I was eighteen when I met Bob in person and I remember being in awe. It was on the set of my first movie and Bob was literally the most positive and striking force I have ever encountered. He was funny when we needed laughter – the man has an incredible and underrated sense of comedic timing – strong when we needed support and sensitive when we needed a friend.

While Working on Bob’s congressional campaign, a story came up about the Iron Shiek and his Persian Clubs. the Iron Shiek apparently had an exercise where he would swing these heavy wooden “Persian Clubs” behind his back. He had toured the nation’s gyms with the clubs and, apparently, no other strong man in the country could perform the exercise, nor could anyone on the WWF roster – except Bob, who did it….on his FIRST TRY. When I asked Bob how, he told me ‘when you believe you can do something…you can.’ The very next day, bob said he was going to perform an exercise of his own-the harvard step test in front of city hall on his election day. Twenty years earlier bob set a personal record doing the step test for two straight hours. The goal was to match that. we all thought he was crazy as he was well into his 50s by that time. Bob was not able to match that record. He made a new one. It wasn’t three hours. It wasn’t four hours. He did his harvard step test for eight hours straight!!! Once again reminding us all, if you believe you can do something, you can.

Speaking of Hollywood, one of the first days I was hosting the Today Show, John Cena and Vince McMahon happened to be guests. Of course, I’m huge fans of theirs, too, but I couldn’t help but threaten John that Bob would one day come back to put him in the chicken wing! They both had great things to say about Bob but I’m sure they thought I was a little nuts, as people have thought Bob was a little nuts. But along with everything else Bob taught me, its okay to be a little nuts.

I’m sure people thought Bob was more than a little nuts, when after an unprecedented 5 year run with the title, he refused to turn heel. He believed it would let down his fans which included many troubled youth who had looked up to him and in those days, it would have. In so doing he surrendered millions of dollars from the new age of rock and wrestling as well as the career he loved most.

Not only did Bob Backlund hold the title for almost six consecutive years – he did something perhaps even greater when he came back a decade later. He completely reinvented himself and his character. When you think of performers who’ve been able to successfully reinvent their characters, even in Hollywood, few names come to mind. Bob not only created an entire new persona he also went on to become wrestling’s number one heel and regained his title in one of the most successful comebacks in sports entertainment history.

But, most people know that. Like the greatest champions Bob Backlund carries himself with humility – which is why many of the facts I’m about to reveal are not known.

In a Pennsylvania match against Hulk Hogan, whom he pinned on several occasions, Bob Backlund picked Hulk up over his head with one arm. It’s a feat Hulk, and his own late father, often reflected on in astonishment.

Bob Backlund has only been to the doctor twice since 1973.

Bob Backlund has never done a drug. As he says and I quote, “I wouldn’t know what to do with them.”

Bob Backlund, within a three month span, won the NCAA wrestling championship and the National college football championship. He is perhaps the only man in history to hold that distinction.

In that championship football game, Bob Backlund recorded 22 tackles and 2 fumble recoveries. To give perspective, a team averages about 65 plays in an entire game.

Bob Backlund was a top shoot fighter if not THE top shoot fighter in the world of professional wrestling.

Bob Backlund intentionally NEVER squashed his opponents as he believed it would harm their future earnings.

Bob Backlund is in better condition than 99 percent of men…a third his age.

Bob Backlund has a diverse portfolio of stocks and real estate and has NEVER IN HIS LIFE PAID A DIME OF INTEREST!

Bob Backlund has a beautiful wife and daughter.

And at the end of the day, Bob Backlund justs want to help others in need.

Bob Backlund is simply one of, if not, THE greatest personal success stories for wrestlers, fans and people in general.

I know it wasn’t always easy in your career, Bob. But, in the face of shortcomings and disappointments, you never gave up or succumbed like so many of us understandably would. Instead, you continued working out, educating yourself and, always, helping others and donating your time to charity. Through it all you kept your faith and your resolve and here you are on the greatest stage being honored by your greatest peers. I’m excited for tonight, your book being published and all the amazing things you remain to accomplish in your journey. And, I believe there’s one more WWE run in that journey for you Bob, because ‘When u believe you can do something, you can.’

Some know you as Bob Backlund. Others as Mr. Backlund. I just know you as my champion, my hero and my friend. Thank you to the WWE Universe for allowing me to welcome to the stage, Mr. Bob Backlund!

Brodus Clay Weighs In On His Character’s Progress, The Funkadactyles vs. The Bellas, Tensai

Brodus Clay appeared as a guest on the latest edition of Busted Open Radio, hosted by Doug Mortman and Dave LaGreca (Busted Open Radio airs every Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. on Sirius 94 and XM 208), where he addressed such topics as the evolution of his WWE character, his partnership with Tensai and the ongoing feud between The Funkadactyles and The Bella Twins.

On teaming with Tensai: “We’re kindred spirits. I don’t know if you guys have noticed and by the way, I don’t want to upset him, the name you’re looking for is Sweet T. Tensai is so angry, relax, have some fun. And everything goes with Sweet Tea, right? It’s a delicious drink and athletic big guy who can dance, why not?

“I think he’s right around 350 and I’m about 356 so seven plus. There’s a little resemblance [between us], one of us has still got his hair, which is always nice and between the two of us could pay some mortgages at a tattoo parlor but our styles are a little bit different though. Like his success in Japan and he has the Japanese influence into his work and I’m more of a suplex power guy, so the pairing of us together is actually ying and yang a little bit, which is cool. He enjoys being able to show the other side of him. As he was before, he was kind of one dimensional, you know, the angry guy, which can only go so far, I think. After a while it’s like, what is he mad about? He’s got a great job and the country is going broke and this guy is mad?”

On just having fun out there and yelling ‘suplex’: “Actually they were getting mad at me for doing that on TV. They’re like, ‘you seem like you’re picking on the guy’ when I’m telling him what I’m going to do to him, but I always thought that was the worst thing you can do to somebody, like ‘I’m going to take my hand and I’m going to put it in your face and I’m going to throw you.’ When you call it to him, it mentally gets in the guy’s head. I think I’m going to get back to that.”

The evolution of his character: “Coming out of NXT I felt that I was robbed and I finished second and I cut a pretty good speech on the crowd. I told them I was going to get some back because I was angry, and being with Alberto Del Rio was basically similar to when I was with Snoop. My role was to get his back and make him look as tough as possible and me smiling and cracking jokes wasn’t going to do that. So I had to put my personality in the back seat to take care of the job, but I knew it was a doorway for me to get my own personality an opportunity. So the time with Alberto was good in terms of learning and Alberto’s a great competitor and his experience helped me a lot, but as soon as I got a chance to be me, I never was a guy who was angry, that mean tough guy is usually the scariest guy in the room, I always noticed the guy that looked the meanest and act the meanest was terrified, that’s why he looked mean. And the guy who was smiling at you before he fought you was the guy you really worried about because he’s not sweating you. So that’s kind of like how I was, even body guarding with guys I was more of a talker and ran my mouth and smiled and stuff and it kept people off, especially if a guy’s is fired up and you’re laughing at him or smiling or winking at him it just messes with their mind. That was more who I am. Shaquille O’Neal was the same way. If you looked at him before a basketball game, he was silly, joking around, dancing, but come tip-off he was the business and I’m trying to be more like that.”

The Funkasaurus character: “I think the word is fun. I just wanted to have fun with it. I think that was something that the WWE was missing. With all the seriousness that’s going around today, people need to laugh, they need to have a good time, they need to look at somebody who’s not afraid to make fun of themselves a little bit. I mean everyone’s gotten a little too uptight. When I think of guys like the Junkyard Dog and even Hulk Hogan, when he came out and that music was playing and he was pointing and ripping his shirt and everybody got fired up and Ultimate Warrior came out and everybody was shaking ropes and they didn’t really know what they were doing but they knew they needed to be moving vigorously and it made sense and we kind of got away from that. I wanted, if anything else, Brodus Clay to be remembered as somebody who got you out of your seat and I think that’ll be remembered so you’ve got to come 100% with that. We have an open camp, Naomi and Cameron, they always have ideas and as the leader of the Funk Nation or Tons of Funk, now the official name of the tag team, it’s a big group but it’s a lot of fun and a lot of input and people come in with new ideas all the time and I always get all sorts of good ideas from Twitter, people going, ‘hey can you do this…’, and we try as much as possible to incorporate everyone’s opinion so everyone feels like they’re involved. Even the name, we went out and it came down to Lords of Funk and Tons of Funk and What the Funk and Sweet T was like, ‘I like Tons of Funk,’ I was like, ‘what are we, tipping scales?’ Next thing you know its #tippingscales, Tons of Funk. So it’s a group thing but you got to have fun with it.”

People of all ages dancing for Brodus: “I think it’s a testimony to how bad of a dancer I really am. The thing about it (the teen wolf dance) is anybody can do it, so when they see me dancing, ‘well I can do that.’ I think if I was like Fred Astaire out there or like break dance fighting and doing crazy splits and stuff like that I think people would be like, ‘ehhhh, I’m just going to watch him,’ but the fact that they’re like, ‘I can do that,’ it’s fun and I think they lose themselves. Matter of fact, at WM last year when I came out with Mama Clay and the Bridge Club I was like ‘everybody call your mama,’ there was a guy who was watching and was defiant, I was keeping him from his tough stuff, and when I was like “everybody grab your phone” he without even realizing just pulled his phone out and it wasn’t until it was up that he was like, ‘what?! No.’ Then he put his phone back down and if you watch it you can see me looking at him going like, ‘you dig? I got you.’ You can say what you want to say but you just lifted your phone up when I told you to. It can be euphoric and for tough guys it’s alright to lay back a little bit and have fun and when the bell rings still be about business but enjoy it, have fun, people are excited to see you.”

The Funkadactyles and the Bellas in the ring: “Well they’re both former Divas champions and I would argue that Naomi is the best pure athlete in the women’s division, period. Some of the stuff that she does, it just blows your mind. She’s just chomping at the bit and the more she gets out there the more things she does and Cameron makes up for her inexperience with she’s ferocious. She’s throwing blows out there and the Bellas, they’re wily veterans out there, but that’s what me and Sweet T are there for. We’re always coaching them on the sidelines. If you’ve seen me during the match, they got pom poms for me so I get up there and cheer for them as best I can but at the same time giving instructions and stuff. Experience wise you’ve got to give it to the Bella Twins but in terms of just overall effort, athleticism, and just work ethic, the Funkadactyles are there with them.”

Bret Hart Interview – What Is His Relationship With Triple H?, Rates His WrestleMania 29 Match

Arda Ocal of the Baltimore Sun and Layfield Report recently conducted a live Q/A with Bret “Hitman” Hart. In the session which was primary questions from the audience, many questions were covered including:

– Opponents we wished he had a chance to work and would have liked to work one more match against

– His interactions with Batista

– Opinions of John Cena and the opinions of him from critics

– Who he considers today to be the “Best There is, Best There Was and the Best There ever will be”

Ocal asked him about comments he made when the pair last spoke in an interview a few weeks ago about Triple H not being in his Top 1000 wrestlers and giving Undertaker vs Triple H at Wrestlemania 28 a 4 out of 10.

Bret is aware that this has become a phenomenon among the internet wrestling community and also gave the match between Triple H and Brock Lesnar at Wrestlemania 29 a 4/10. He also reveals that he and Triple H don’t speak today and when they see each other its typically nothing more than “Hi, bye”. Though he does keep in contact today with Shawn Michaels.

Scott Hall Interview – Being A Top Star In WWE Today, nWo “Third Man” Options, Getting Sober

Scott Hall joined Inside The Ropes this past Thursday to talk about getting sober and his career in professional wrestling. Highlights from the interview are as follows:

About being a top guy in the WWE today and his son Cody going there:

“I don’t get to watch a lot of WWE, but through this internet thing, Some people comment about a guy becoming the World Champ or the US champ and a couple of weeks later he’s down the card in the opening match. I think that kills the image of being a top guy. But I guess the promoters, the guys in the WWE calling the shots are seeing it like ‘We’re giving you a chance and if you don’t produce, you don’t produce and back down you go’ I’ve talked to Cody about it a lot and he’s in no hurry to go there. He’d rather be seasoned and polished before he makes a move like that.”

On what Scott and Kevin knew the night of the Bash at the Beach 96:

“We had no idea who it was going to be. The whole third guy thing came up by accident. I remember Kev and I called Bret and I spoke to him, Kev spoke to him and we told him it was really fun working at WCW. It was really laid back, guaranteed money, it was easy. We were so used to being in a shark tank in New York. Coming to Atlanta was like being in a country club. It was really tame in the locker room in WCW compared to New York. We told Bret he should come down. Bischoff was interested, he was offering him a pretty sweet deal but Bret wasn’t interested. We wanted it to be Hulk, but Hulk had creative control in his contract so he didn’t have to do anything he didn’t want to do. We went to the ring, we hadn’t even met Hulk yet, I met him briefly at WrestleMania 9 but I didn’t know Hulk, we actually went to the ring in Daytona and Hogan wasn’t even there yet. He was on a jet, flying cross country from shooting a movie. Bischoff wanted it to be Hulk but before we went out, Bischoff told us “If Hulk doesn’t show, I’m gonna send out Sting.”

How he became sober, with the assistance of Diamond Dallas Page:

“I didn’t have any purpose in my life. My goal had been to be a top star in wrestling and I did that. Then I thought the natural progression would be me working in the office but it didn’t happen. I had a little heart episode about 7 weeks ago, I ended up in the hospital in intensive care for a week. The doctor commented ‘you’re a freak, you’re a genetic freak, your heart is normal again’ While I was there, there was this kid who brought me my food and he was a big wrestling fan, and the kid kept coming back and one time he whipped out his iPhone and he had the before and after pics of Jake The Snake. I’d heard things but never seen the pictures. I’d talked to Jake and I knew good things were happening and Dallas was at the root of it and I thought, Do I go to rehab again? Or do I try something else? Instead of treading water in rehab, I don’t know what triggered it and to be honest i don’t question it. I’m moving in the right direction finally, for the first time in so long. I’m 65 days now without any alcohol or drug. I’ve had longer times, but I’ve always been in a facility. I have no cravings and I feel great.”
