  • “Nightmare” Ken Wayne Sentenced On Child Pornography Charges

“Nightmare” Ken Wayne Sentenced On Child Pornography Charges

Yesterday, 57 year old Kenath Dwayne Peale of Horn Lake, Mississippi, best known as pro wrestler “Nightmare” Ken Wayne, was sentenced by Judge Richard Chamberlin to 20 years on charges of possession of child pornography. Per the terms of his guilty plea, he will serve the first five years of the sentence in prison and the remaining 15 years under post-release supervision. Peale had been on house arrest since he was first charged in September 2014, and was facing 40 years in prison. He will also pay $1,000 each to the Mississippi Children’s Trust Fund and the Mississippi Crime Victim’s Compensation Fund as well as being required to register as a sex offender when he’s released.

In a press release, Attorney General Jim Hood commented on the case:

We focus all our resources, including advanced computer hardware and software, to seek out and find child predators and bring them to justice. We will continue to work with the task force to put these kinds of criminals behind bars, and we thank Judge Chamberlin for the sentence and the DeSoto County Sheriff’s Office for their assistance on this case.

While not a huge name, it’s a bit surprising that most of the area newspapers didn’t play him his wrestling career, as he was a star in the area for many years. He first got a Memphis TV push in 1979 in a memorable father and son program where he and his father, Buddy Wayne, feuded with Tommy Gilbert and his son Eddie, who had just debuted. It was in 1981, though, that  he first formed the team that defined his career.

Danny Davis had formed the masked Nightmares tag team with David Oswald and then Ted Allen before Wayne replaced them as the masked Speed. Eventually, the team of Nightmare and Speed became the masked Nightmares, and they were one of the most underrated combos of the era, a pair of really solid, athletic, and high flying heels a la the Midnight Express. Their size held them back from getting shots in a lot of territories, though, so they mostly worked in areas with a junior heavyweight focus, like Memphis, Stampede Wrestling in Calgary (unmasked as The Tennessee Studs), and Alabama. During one of their runs at home in Memphis, they became The Galaxians, Alpha and Beta, managed by a rookie named Jim Cornette, who credits them with teaching him how to manage a great tag team.

Eventually, they unmasked. In Alabama’s Continental Wrestling Federation, booker Eddie Gilbert split them up for a memorable program that was a big part of why Gilbert’s run in that promotion was so critically acclaimed. As the territories dried up, Wayne would do WCW and WWF TV jobs between indie dates and eventually opened up a wrestling school. He was an excellent worker with a reputation for having a great mind for ring psychology and reading a crowd, but obviously, in the grand scheme of things, none of that matters given the crimes he’s admitted to committing.

  • WWE Recently Met With Lucha Underground Officials

WWE Recently Met With Lucha Underground Officials

The latest Wrestling Observer Newsletter has a couple interesting items about something that writer/editor Dave Meltzer mentioned in passing a few days ago. Apparently, back in December, representatives of Lucha Underground had some kind of secret meeting with Paul “Triple H” Levesque and Canyon Ceman of WWE. The substance of the meeting was about some kind of talent arrangement, but it didn’t go anywhere.

It’s also worth noting that TNA officials reached out to Lucha Underground about doing a joint show during WrestleMania 32 weekend in Dallas, Texas. Lucha Underground turned them down, thinking it wouldn’t be a good fit for their brand.

A smaller detail from Meltzer’s account of the meeting is the one getting play on social media right now. In his Lucha Underground TV review, Meltzer expresses his frustration that the Lucha Underground braintrust believes that they’re ahead of the curve when it comes to pushing intergender matches, He added that during the WWE meeting, the Lucha Underground reps “bragged” about how forward-thinking the intergender presentation is, and Meltzer added that “I can just imagine [Levesque and Ceman’s] reaction.”

So, what are the issues here, besides the obvious?

    • It’s something that WWE is very careful about, to the point that media who visits the Performance Center are told that while they’re free to take photographs, they are forbidden from shooting women training in the ring with men.
    • Meltzer has referenced how Spike TV, amongst other cable networks (Spike was vocal about it when they had TNA), are VERY anti-man on woman violence when it comes to pro wrestling matches and angles. He’s made it clear that a lot of potential TV partners either would turn on Lucha Underground because of the intergender matches or would do so if pitched the show.
    • Intergender wrestling has a history of being fetishized, which bothers some people. For example, there’s this old Dean Ambrose match that’s been linked on numerous wrestling forums by confused fans. Regardless of the motives of those involved (and there are plenty of wrestlers who do legitimately see it as empowering when done in a less ), a lot of people in and around wrestling have negative views for that reason on top of the more obvious connotations and complaints about a lack of realism.

Regardless of your feelings on the matter, if it’s a legitimate hurdle to Lucha Underground’s business interests, then it’s probably best to abandon the gimmick. And while nobody’s said it’s the reason (this probably has nothing to do with it), it’s certainly interesting that we’re hearing this after Lucha Underground lost their Spanish language slot on Unimas and nobody has explained why.

  • Linda McMahon Announces Further Details About Her New Startup

Linda McMahon Announces Further Details About Her New Startup

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pj9lUr3-pgE

There had been stories about WWE co-founder and former CEO Linda McMahon launching some kind of startup to assist women in the business world, but details had been scarce and there were a number of delays. Today, her people sent out a press release officially announcing the launch of the company, which is called Women’s Leadership LIVE. It’s not entirely clear what exactly this new company will do to achieve those goals (other than holding events where you get to meet and “get mentored by” women like Linda McMahon), but here’s the full press release:

Linda McMahon, Partners Launch New Startup Promoting Women in Leadership

Women’s Leadership LIVE Aims to Educate and Inspire Women Toward Leadership Roles

STAMFORD, Conn.—-Linda McMahon, co-founder and former CEO of World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE), has partnered with Stacey Schieffelin, founder and president of ybf Beauty; and social media strategist Debbie Saviano to launch a new company aimed at promoting leadership opportunities for women.

“Even in 2016, women are clearly underrepresented in leadership”

“Our goal is to build a world where women obtaining and exercising power is both expected and commonplace,” McMahon said.

Women’s Leadership LIVE, LLC, will organize live events featuring workshops, keynote speakers and panel discussions and will offer ongoing mentorship opportunities. It aims to educate women on how best to launch and grow a business, advance their careers toward leadership roles, and identify and pursue leadership opportunities in public service.

“Even in 2016, women are clearly underrepresented in leadership,” McMahon said. “Women are 51 percent of the population but only 20 percent of Congress. Women earn the majority of college degrees but on average only make 78 cents on the dollar. Women make 80 percent of household spending decisions, but only 5 percent of Fortune 500 companies are led by women. Only 17 percent of corporate board members are women. This is not about setting quotas, but about having a diversity of perspectives and experiences in decision-making roles. We are making progress, but there are still glass ceilings that need to be cracked.”

Each of the three founders has extensive background in entrepreneurship, leadership and reinvention.

McMahon is the co-founder and former CEO of WWE. She and her husband, Vince McMahon, grew the company from a 13-person operation to a publicly traded global enterprise with more than 800 employees in offices worldwide. WWE has fans in more than 150 countries and is a social media powerhouse with more than 27 million followers on Facebook. She was twice nominated to represent the people of Connecticut in the U.S. Senate.

Debbie Saviano is a social media design strategist and expert in online influence. She put herself through college driving a school bus, earned a teaching degree, and later became a school principal, leading five campuses from pre-K to high school. After retiring from education, she launched a new career as a social media expert, helping people and organizations develop and maintain relationships through the power of ROI – Return on Influence via social media.

Stacey Schieffelin is the founder and president of ybf (Your Best Friend) Beauty, a cosmetics company that sells products on TV shopping channels worldwide. She built her entrepreneurial career after 20 years as a model with the Ford Modeling Agency. She rang the New York Stock Exchange’s opening bell on behalf of the non-profit Count Me In to celebrate the power of women-owned businesses. She was named Connecticut’s Female Entrepreneur of the Year in 2012.

The first live event will be in Irving, Texas, May 19-22. Participants will have an opportunity to sign up for deeper training through ongoing mentorships lasting three, six or twelve months.

“There are many organizations that support women in business, but what will set Women’s Leadership Live apart is the community and the follow-up that will emerge after our live events,” McMahon said. “Research has shown that women who had mentors usually have higher rates of success than those who didn’t. Each of WLL’s founders has previously mentored women in business on a more informal basis and know it’s that ongoing support that makes the difference.”

  • Pat Patterson’s Autobiography Finally Gets A Release Date & More Details

Few wrestling books have been more anticipated than the autobiography that Pat Patterson is doing with Bertrand Hébert (co-author of Mad Dogs, Midgets, and Screw Jobs, a history of Montreal wrestling). Patterson is a wrestling genius with a career going back to the late ’50s and his personal journey starting as a gay teenager who came to the United States unable to speak English is a fascinating one. Today, ECW Press (the Canadian publisher that has done much to advance the cause of wrestling books and is now working with WWE) officially announced the release of the book, and it’s available for pre-order at Amazon.

Here are the quick and dirty details:

Title: Accepted: How the First Gay Superstar Changed WWE

    Release Date: August 9, 2016

    Length: 320 pages

    Formats: Hardcover and ebooks.

    And here’s the cover art:

Pat Patterson book cover (ECW Press)

For the full release from ECW Press, read on:

A trailblazing wrestling legend shares his story of living life on his own terms

When Pat Patterson was 17 years old, he was thrown out of his house after telling his parents he was in love . . . with a man. Crossing into the United States from Montreal in the 1960s, barely knowing a word of English, he was determined to succeed in the squared circle. Back when homophobia was widespread, Pat lived in the super-macho world of pro wrestling.
One of the most unlikely stories of a revolutionary talent, pioneer, and creative savant, Patterson recalls the trials and tribulations as he climbed to the upper ranks of sports-entertainment — as a performer and, later, as a backstage dignitary — in this fascinating and revealing memoir. After making his mark in the ring as the prestigious first holder of WWE’s Intercontinental Championship, Pat set out to conquer the WWE world behind the curtain. He became the lead creative force behind the Royal Rumble match and countless innovations that have shaped the way the WWE Universe has enjoyed sports-entertainment for generations.

Many WWE fans know Pat Patterson as a ring legend, WWE Hall of Famer, and one of Vince McMahon’s “stooges” during the Attitude Era. But Patterson is no stooge. He has long been one of Vince McMahon’s trusted advisors, his impact and importance to the nascent stages of WWE nearly comparable to the Chairman himself. Still active in WWE today, Pat delivers his no-holds barred story from unknown to WWE luminary.

  • Jim Ross Talks Potential Shinsuke Nakamura Name Change, Awesome Kong, & More

    http://www.dailymotion.com/video/x2qnx33

Jim Ross has posted his latest blog entry at JRsBarBQ.com covering some of the biggest stories in the pro wrestling world. As always, he gives his thoughts from his unique perspective as a wrestling announcer and executive with decades of experience. Here are some of the more notable comments from Ross this time out:

On Shinsuke Nakamura and discussions of whether or not WWE will change his name:

I have no issues with WWE changing Shinsuke Nakamura’s ring name if they choose. WWE should own the talent’s names and/or have the legal rights to protect their intellectual property in the show biz world of pro wrestling. It’s sound business and won’t adversely affect how Nakamura gets over with the fans. In the eyes of many, mine too, Nakamura is one of the most gifted talents in the world and brings as much natural charisma to his presentation as any one in the business today.

On Awesome Kong being sent home from TNA’s UK tour due to an incident with Reby Sky:

Sorry to see one of my favorite female grapplers, Awesome Kong, involved in controversy in the UK that saw TNA send Kong home from the tour there. I don’t know the complete story but It’s regrettable nonetheless. Kong has the ability to help any company IMO. Let’s hope that this matter is addressed and all parties can move positively forward. One has to ask if TNA knew that there were lingering issues between the two ladies in question here why didn’t they address such and attempt to clear the air if they didn’t?

On the fans dressed up as past stars at Raw:

Don’t understand why WWE is allegedly not pleased that some fans dressed up as WWE stars no a recent RAW which saw @TheRock interact with them. I thought it was entertaining.

And of course, he extends some well-wishes to Bret Hart:

Best wishes to @BretHart on his upcoming battle with Prostate Cancer. I’d lay my money on The Hitman to kick Cancer’s ass.

The full blog post includes thoughts on Braun Strowman, some vague notes on a meeting Ross has this weekend, NXT vs. Raw, and more.

  • Tammy “Sunny” Sytch’s Adult Film Has Been Released; Book Coming Soon

According to a press release from Vivid Video, “Sunny Side Up,” the pornographic video starring Tammy Sytch, is now available on their website. The release had been hyped with an elaborate media campaign centering around Sytch trying to sell her WWE Hall of Fame Ring, Vivid (run/founded by long-time wrestling fan Steven Hirsch) offering her $100,000 for the ring if she’d do  a sex video, and Sytch accepting. As we first reported about two weeks ago, this was all an elaborate storyline, as Vivid accidentally released the trailer before the entire angle played out. The video seems to have been shot sometime during Spring of 2015, as various people, including Dave Meltzer, have noted that she told them over WrestleMania weekend that she was signing some kind of lucrative contract.

The press release also mentions that Sytch has an autobiography, “A Star Shattered,” coming out this weekend from Riverdale Ave. Books. A 2013 article from the New Haven Register says that she wrote the book while in jail for assaulting her ex-boyfriend and violating multiple protective orders.

Here’s the full press release from Vivid:

“I’ve always been a fan of adult movies,” says Sunny. “I consider myself extremely sexual and I’m also a voyeur. When I first thought about making the movie I was terrified. But then, as I was making it, I loved it. Vivid made the process a pleasure and I found everything about the company more professional than any wrestling experience.”

  • NJPW Shinsuke Nakamura Farewell Show Results 1/30/16

NJPW Shinsuke Nakamura Farewell Show Results 1/30/16

Note: All translations in this article are from E. Key Oide on Twitter. A must-follow for English-speaking NJPW fans.

While officially just part of the Road to New Beginning tour, tonight’s (Japan time) New Japan Pro Wrestling card at Korakuen Hall in Tokyo took on significance as Shinsuke Nakamura’s final match in the company before starting with WWE. While the card easily could have done big business, there was no time to schedule anything too big or fancy with Nakamura giving notice on January 4th and being done with his obligations on February 1st. So they just packed the ~2,000 seat combat sports mecca in the Tokyo Dome City complex instead.

In the main event, Nakamura, Kazuchika Okada, and Tomohiro Ishii (representing CHAOS) defeated Hiroshi Tanahashi, Hirooki Goto, and Katsuyori Shibata (representing the NJPW Regular Army) when Ishii pinned Shibata after a vertical drop brainbuster. After the match, Kenny Omega came out to cut a promo on Nakamura, calling him a coward for leaving and vacating the IWGP Intercontinental Championship instead of giving him a title shot. Tanahashi then interrupted Omega (who was slated to face “X,” as NJPW refers to mystery opponents), saying  “Listen. I’ll explain it to you. It might be sad, but this is Nakamura’s last match today. I’m the only one who can face [you]for the [Intercontinental title]! I. AM. X.”

    https://twitter.com/chiba3min/status/693412944701329408

From there, Nakamura, in tears, was left alone in the ring with the microphone (again, make sure to follow E. Key Oide on Twitter for great translations like these):

Should I say something? Hmm, what should I do? New Japan! To all the wrestlers, my comrades who I’ve faced, and to the fans: Thank you. I’ll show an unsuspecting world the Nakamura that was born and raised here! Until I can come back stronger, I won’t say goodbye. Just…thank you.

    That’s all…

    PSYCH!

You all know what I wanna say!

The answer, the only answer…is YEAOH!

[Nakamura is joined in the ring by the rest of CHAOS]

The greatest…the greatest sport in the world is PRO WRESTLING!

Later, at the press conference, Nakamura made some additional comments, which E. Key Oide compiled into this image post on Twitter:

Here are the full results for the card:

    1. David Finlay Jr. defeated Hirai Kawato in 4:38 with the Boston Crab.
    2. YOSHI-HASHI defeated Jay White in 6:20 with a power bomb into a jackknife cradle.
    3. Hiroyoshi Tenzan, Satoshi Kojima, & Juhsin Thunder Liger defeated Yuji Nagata, Manabu Nakanishi, & Tiger Mask IV in 10:34 when Kojima pinned Nakanishi after a lariat.
    4. Bad Luck Fale & Yujiro Takahashi of The Bullet Club defeated Toru Yano & Kazushi Sakuraba when Fale pinned Yano after hitting The Grenade in 6:55..
    5. Tetsuya Naito, EVIL & BUSHI of Los Ingobernables defeated KUSHIDA, Ryusuke Taguchi & Captain New Japan in 8:57 after EVIL hit his EVIL finisher on Captain New Japan. BUSHI and KUSHIDA got into a skirmish afterwards to push their match for KUSHIDA’s IWGP Junior Heayyweight Championship on Valentine’s Day.
    6. Kenny Omega, Karl Anderson, Doc Gallows, & Cody Hall of The Bullet Club defeated Togi Makabe, Tomoaki Honma, Michael Elgin, & Juice Robinson when Omega pinned Robinson after a running knee in 11:43.
    7. Shinsuke Nakamura, Kazuchika Okada & Tomohiro Ishii defeated Hiroshi Tanahashi, Hirooki Goto & Katsuyori Shibata in 21:48 when Ishii pinned Shibata after a vertical drop brainbuster.
  • WWE Issues Statement On Allegations Of Sexism In Presentation

    https://youtu.be/dZbiyZW4RUw

A topic that’s gotten some attention this past week on wrestling websites and social media has been the continuing discussion of WWE’s treatment of women both behind the scenes and in terms of their storytelling. While this has been brewing for a while because of the whole NXT Women’s Division vs. WWE Divas’ Division dynamic, it came to a head this past week because of two moments on WWE programming:

    1. Ric Flair forcibly kissing Becky Lynch as a distraction spot and the announcers laughing it off as a comedy spot.
    2. The Rock’s entire interaction with Lana, who was returning to TV after a noticeable absence, being about the idea that she cheated on Rusev with him when he last appeared on Monday Night Raw.

Today, the topic was explored in an article at Vocative by Alex Groot titled “WWE’s Looming Sexism Problem.” When asked for comment on the piece, WWE issued the following statement:

WWE programming, which features fictional characters that cover a range of personalities similar to movies and television shows, tells stories of good versus evil. In addition, as our on-going storylines develop, we will continue to position women as both strong competitors and compelling individuals.

Of course, as mentioned by Groot, even if you can argue that at least Flair was an evil villain doing evil things, The Rock was the babyface and Lana was the heel.

  • WWE Network Added To T-Mobile Binge On, Gift Cards In New Stores, & More

There are a few things to talk about with WWE Network today, one of which is huge news for users of one of the United States’ “big four” mobile phone service providers. That one pertains to T-Mobile and their “Binge On” feature. Under CEO John Legere, T-Mobile has been trying to increase its market share with aggressive pricing as well as a number of innovative promotions. First, T-Mobile added unlimited music streaming (as in it doesn’t count against your monthly data) music streaming with a number of services. More recently, they’ve started doing the same for video in the “Binge On” program, with one caveat: The video maxes out at 480p resolution. If you want HD, you have to use your data allowance. Anyway, Android Police and a number of other sites reported yesterday that WWE Network has been added to Binge On.

In addition, WWE announced in the video at the top of this article that WWE Network gift subscription cards are now available at GameStop stores. Previously, the cards were only available at Wal-Mart, which made it a bit more difficult for fans without credit cards to subscribe to the service. In the past, WWE had reported surprisingly high numbers of rejected payments, so maybe the increased availability of the cards could help with that problem.

Finally, in a programming note, more and more WCW Monday Nitro episodes are being uploaded to WWE Network’s on demand library each day. Make sure to follow WWE Network Updates on Twitter (it’s a robot that tweets when something is added to the library) to keep up with all of latest uploads to the service.

  • James Storm Talks Leaving NXT To Return To TNA & More

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KzFaUo2oPcA

James Storm has had a strange last several months of his career: He left TNA, made a few appearances on WWE television doing guest spots on NXT, never left TNA television because they taped the World Title Series before he left, and then returned to TNA in lieu of signing with WWE. One of TNA’s signature stars, he’s been promoting TNA’s upcoming tour of the United Kingdom, and one of his stops was an interview with RealSport. Here are some of the highlights:

Making the decision to return to TNA:

I’ve been with TNA since the very beginning and I want to see them succeed, I feel like I have a lot to give not just to TNA but the wrestling business as a whole, I just felt that right now I can help TNA out a lot.

Was teaching younger wrestlers something that excited him about NXT?

Oh yeah, it kind of reminded me of when TNA was first starting out, all the guys are hungry and had a chip on their shoulders looking to prove they have what it takes.

His thoughts on if Triple H winning the WWE World Heavyweight Championship at the Royal Rumble was too predictable and/or stale:

Yeah, a lot of people have asked me this question, and I always say wait to see how the story plays out, because it can help to build a bigger star. Especially now that you want to see Triple H get beat. Its genuine, real heat, you’re there thinking this SOB, I really want this guy to get beat now.

Make sure to check out the full interview for more on his return to TNA, including the Beer Money reunion.

  • Mike Quackenbush Talks Rise Of CHIKARA, Fan Loyalty, & More

Mike Quackenbush Talks Rise Of CHIKARA, Fan Loyalty, & More

There’s nothing else quite like CHIKARA, the Pennsylvania-based indie that’s been running over a decade with weird storylines (like time travel) and wacky characters inspired by comics books, science fiction, and so on. Longtime independent wrestler turned CHIKARA trainer and promoter Mike Quackenbush was the latest guest on the Two Man Power Trip of Wrestling podcast, during which he talked about the promotion’s fiercely loyal fanbase and much more. Here are some key quotes from the interview:

The growth of CHIKARA over the years:

It’s like a blur. I can relate to this now as a father and it’s kind of like, one day you turn around and you think and look at your kids and say when did they grow up? I feel a little bit about that with CHIKARA. In the early years you don’t have time to sit down and reflect about it and realize well these three years have gone quick or these six years have gone quick you are just trying to stay alive and you are trying to keep your head above water. But every once and again you do have cause to kind of sit back and look over your shoulder and say man the years have really gone here. Maybe that is fresh on my mind right now sensing that our training facility The Wrestle Factory and knowing how many Wrestle Factory graduates are about to in this calendar year before 2016 is over are about to ascend onto the roster.

There is going to be this inevitable changing of the guard and that’s one of those touchstones that really started when one of the longest standing CHIKARA guys Ultra Mantis Black had a career ending injury after a crazy, dumb accident in the ring that some of these guys that have been with me since day one are really in that position where some of them are getting past that age where the WWE wouldn’t even look at them but that was their aspiration, they wouldn’t even pass the cut off in terms of their age and that inevitability that life is going to creep up on you. But I sense this changing of the guard and this really has made me look back on it and say what a crazy trip it has been thus far.

    Building the loyal CHIKARA fanbase:

It never ceases to amaze me. For example, two of our fans named their daughter CHIKARA or every time I hear a weird story like that or some fan comes up and shows me they’ve got a sleeve on their arm of all the CHIKARA characters tattooed on them or that we ship an order out to Guam. It boggles my mind and part of it is as you guys know, when I was coming up, the internet was scarce or a handful of people that had access to the internet regularly and the kind of explosion of AOL chat rooms and people that had home computers and weren’t paying by the minute for access to where we are now and the ubiquity of the internet that someone could lift up their phone right now and be live and Periscope an entire CHIKARA event to the world. It boggles my mind.

How CHIKARA started…and was almost named Impact Wrestling:

It’s strange to think about this now but we started talking about it in the Summer of 2000. This precedes the creation of NWA-TNA. We were talking about it and Tom (Carter AKA Reckless Youth) and I as well as Don Montoya who was one of our traveling mates. We decided after Tom came back from his WWF Developmental deal and I feel like when Tom came back they had beaten a lot of his passion for the craft out of him and I think that is a reoccurring struggle for everyone, self-included that I go through this like once a year where you are utterly burned out by what we do and you must be able to find the joy for your craft again. We kind of just decided that all we do is moan about how awful things are, shouldn’t we SHUT UP and do something and we decided yes, we are going to change things.

We are going to do it by training people in a certain kind of way, we want a more cosmopolitan style that involves all of these international things and we originally wanted to call it Impact Wrestling and for quite a while maybe about four or five months it was Impact Wrestling and then when the time came and we were going to put up a fairly small sum of money, I mean it was a significant in reality for guys in their 20s and well at that point Montoya bowed out. So then it became Tom and I and when Montoya bowed out we decided we are not going to keep this name because that was for the three of us so it needs to be something else.

  • ROH Parent Company Buys Cable Network

Sinclair Broadcast Group, Inc, the parent company of Ring of Honor, announced in a press release that they are in the process of purchasing The Tennis Channel for $350 million. As part of the deal, they’ve been making arrangements with cable companies that would increase the network’s footprint from 30 million homes to 50 million.

With Sinclair also being behind the American Sports Network (ASN) programming package for broadcast stations, the obvious speciation is that The Tennis Channel could be rebranded as ASN. Since Sinclair also owns ROH, it may or may not be a stretch to think that if that happened, ROH could get a spot on the cable network, even if just as filler programming. That said, since Sinclair has programmed ROH on COMET, their science fiction themed broadcast network for digital subchannels, it wouldn’t even be that strange if ROH ended up on The Tennis Channel in its current form.

As noted by Mike Johnson at PWInsider, this is the first time since WCW was sold that a wrestling promotion will be under the same umbrella as a cable network. If Sinclair were to want to do something with ROH on the Tennis Channel, it opens up possibilities (like live specials) that aren’t available now with ROH airing at all hours on a slew of different local broadcast stations.

  • Rusev Breaks Character On Twitter To Refute Rumors (Sort Of)

Last night, using the hashtag #MilkIsForBabies for some reason, Rusev held an impromptu question and answer session on Twitter. Being Rusev’s Twitter account, it was mostly hilarious, favorably comparing Vince McMahon’s hugs to Bayley’s, claiming that a bear no-showed a fight with him in a WWE ring, and more. But it also took a turn when a fan asked him what his favorite moment in WWE was so far:

Then the talk from a few weeks back about him wearing a knee wrap after he said he hadn’t injured his knee:

Then, this morning, after the Q&A, when a fan replied to the “reading lies” tweet with “I’ll trust @davemeltzerWON over a WWE employee who can & will be punished if he doesn’t say exactly what Vince tells him to,” Rusev quoted the reply and said this:

Of course, other than the injury issue (and even then, there are all sorts of degrees of injuries and it’s not as if there aren’t minor knee injuries that someone would be cleared to work on), he didn’t really call out anything specific. On Monday’s edition of Wrestling Observer Radio for F4WOnline.com subscribers, Meltzer said this about Lana when going over The Rock’s segment on Raw (transcript h/t to Keith Harris at Cageside Seats):

By the way, there was another thing that happened with her and I don’t know all the details, but it has added to her legacy so to speak. Something happened where, you know, she said something. It’s probably nothing except everyone is talking about it and essentially she’s got the new round [of heat]. If people had calmed down about her and just said ‘well, OK, she made a mistake,’ well they haven’t.

    […]

I was just told about it tonight after the show and it was actually by someone who had not even watched the show, but had heard the story, just saying that like there’s a new round of heat, everyone likes Rusev and there was something, and, you know, they are just mad at her again.

This continues the recent trend of WWE talent attempting to refute rumors without actually saying anything. Plus, of course, it should go without saying, but Rusev’s choice of words implies that Meltzer just made up whatever story he was theoretically refuting, and even in the event the rumor was false, that’s obviously something Dave would never do. It’s disingenuous to even imply that about someone who’s been reporting on the business for decades.

  • SEScoops Mailbag For Royal Rumble Sunday 2016

It’s back! The SEScoops mailbag is back! We solicited questions, you sent them in, and I picked some of the best ones…

From Shades: Which one of the Social Outcasts has the most upside?

Heath Slater, for sure. Yes, even if he hadn’t been cast in a slew of wacky preliminary heel gimmicks for most of his WWE run, he probably never would have been a giant star. Still, he’s a really good, utterly selfless performer who’s never really gotten to show what he could do. Consider what Daniel Bryan kept saying when he was talking about how he wanted to do his own version of John Cena’s open challenge as Intercontinental Champion on SmackDown He wanted to give more guys chances to show what they could do in the ring, and the name he always singled out was Heath Slater. Remember what Bryan did with Santino Marella in the Elimination Chamber? That was awesome! Now imagine him doing that with someone who’s a much better worker than Santino.

Slater was also the guy that they trusted in the ring with Bret Hart in tag team matches during Bret’s weird little return run in 2010. Technically, Bret couldn’t really have anything done to him due to the terms of his and WWE’s deal with Lloyd’s of London pertaining to his permanent disability insurance policy, Still, Slater was the one he worked with almost exclusively, which shows just how highly everyone in WWE thought of him as a safe, smooth professional. On top of all that, he clearly has a knack for talking even if it’s mostly been to make an ass out of himself.

Also from Shades but this is a quick one: Why did Cena come back so soon just to go out again?

It was a total freak thing. He went away to shoot his TV show, came back, and immediately blew out his shoulder.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6GocMk8xaRk

From Bartz: Brand Split? Yes or No?

Right now? Hell no. In the general sense? It’s a bit trickier.

The problems with the split were always more in the execution than the idea. Favoring one show made the other look terrible, for example, and that happened a lot, usually with SmackDown as the lesser brand. The original idea of having the world champion floating between both shows was fantastic, though, and quickly made the title a lot more prestigious than it had been. That was abandoned way too quickly (as in a few months in) and they never went back to it.

I always thought that the constant “end the brand split” talk was rooted in there being two world titles more than anything, so it really wasn’t that hard to fix in theory. Each show should have had the Intercontinental or United States champion as its top guy, with that guy then in the mix for a world title shot. Instead, the two world titles cheapened each other and reflected negatively on the brand split concept.

Without the brand split, how exactly does WWE handle the simultaneous rise of John Cena and Batista? Does one or the other get lost in the shuffle? The brand split allowed them to develop more stars and position them as main event talent than they could with one show. Which would never happen now, because only a small handful of people are booked to get over.

From UltraManTits Black (that’s a hell of a name): True or False? The internet ruined wrestling.

False. I guess you can argue about kayfabe breaches and that sort of thing in and of themselves, but the internet just did with wrestling what it did with everything else: Communication increased, and more people could access more things, including secrets. I can read Scientology’s secret doctrine with a quick Google search; the magic behind pro wrestling is nothing compared to that when it comes to secrecy. That was an inevitability, and the genie was already out of the bottle to a point, anyway. Plus the problems with things like crowd heat are more symptomatic of things like WWE’s preferred booking and working styles than knowing how the trick is done. When they do something good, like Daniel Bryan’s road to WrestleMania, everyone buys into it like the great angles of the past.

Look at the positive changes we’re seeing now: The rise of Twitter has created a weird globally communal viewing environment for shows, but more importantly, it helps wrestlers cultivate their fanbases. That’s not just Twitter, but it’s an area where there’s really been a huge positive change. Wrestlers are now able to easily sell t-shirts directly to fans, Colt Cabana transformed his career through his podcast, The Young Bucks became legitimate indie draws with zero WWE television exposure…that doesn’t happen without the internet, and there are plenty of other examples.

Yeah, you can argue that there are some things where it might be a negative, but are any of them areas where the change was exclusive to wrestling? I don’t think so.

  • Famous Friend Of Daniel Bryan Claims That Bryan’s Returning

It’s not a secret that in his spare time (he’s had a lot the past couple years), Daniel Bryan enjoys training in submission grappling. When he lived in Las Vegas, he was a regular at the Xtreme Couture gym to train with coach Neil Melanson, a catch wrestling expert whose mentors include former pro wrestler “Judo” Gene LeBell. Since moving to the Phoenix, Arizona area, he’s training at The MMA Lab, run by John Crouch, under whom he trains Brazillian Jiu Jitsu, recently earning his blue belt. At The Lab, he’s befriended many of the athletes, including former UFC Lightweight Champion Benson Henderson, who’s the gym’s star fighter. Anyway, yesterday, Henderson tweeted this:

There are three possible explanations for this:

    1. Bryan actually told Henderson that he’s coming back.
    2. Henderson, like many others, misread the reports that Bryan was cleared to return by a UCLA neurologist (he was, but only the decision of WWE Medical Director Dr. Joseph Maroon has any bearing on if he’s coming back).
    3. Henderson is screwing with everybody.

Which is the truth? We’ll probably find out at some point this weekend, either at the Royal Rumble or the following night on Monday Night Raw.

  • Archie Gouldie, The Legendary Mongolian Stomper, Passes Away at 71

Archie Gouldie, The Legendary Mongolian Stomper, Passes Away at 71

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OS6mMfTrOWU

A number of wrestling personalities and reporters have confirmed that legendary pro wrestler Archie Gouldie, best known as The Mongolian Stomper in the United States and Archie “The Stomper” Gouldie in Canada, has passed away. He was 71 years old.

Gouldie is a unique figure in that he was among the biggest heel stars ever in a few different territories, but he had two completely different personas in which he achieved that status. In the United States, he was always The Mongolian Stomper, a crazed mute brawler who didn’t understand English. As Jim Cornette noted in the above tweet, he was one of the scariest heels of all-time, giving off a sense of unhinged menace that few others in wrestling could touch. But…he had one vulnerability: An inner-ear condition exacerbated by the fans’ boos.

While he travelled throughout the south, his biggest runs were in east Tennessee, where he eventually settled after he retired. He was always flanked by a manager, going through many depending on the territory. The Stomper started J.J. Dillon’s managerial career after Bearcat Wright abandoned him in Memphis, resulting in him briefly killing the gimmick by doing his own promos.

The other place where The Stomper was a huge star as a heel was in Calgary for Stu Hart’s Stampede Wrestling. He was still scary, just in a completely different way. The mute Mongolian wildman gimmick was something he stuck with in the States because he drew money with it, but it wasn’t like he couldn’t talk. He was actually an incredible promo, arguably the most underrated in the history of pro wrestling, in that he’s not usually spoken of among the best in the business. Calgary was where he broke in, returning for training after Stu stretched him as an overzealous fan, and he soon became the most legendary heel in the territory’s history.

Bret Hart has spoken of a promo that scared him half to death as a kid, where The Stomper, feuding with his father, threatened to drive to Hart House, tear the mansion down brick by brick, and piledrive Bret’s mother, Helen, on the driveway. Yes, he was terrifying. Still, his single most remembered moment is probably his babyface turn, which is at the top of this article. The future Tommy Lane (of the Rock ‘n’ Roll RPMs) was brought in as his son, Jeff Gouldie, only for Bad News Allen, the latest terrifying heel in Stampede, to turn on them and cripple Jeff with a piledriver. Goudlie’s promo was chilling; no longer The Stomper, he was just a father like many viewers at home, horrified over letting his son wrestle and vowing revenge. It should have popped business, but there was a near-riot at the show (note how Gouldie is interviewed in an empty arena after the event ends), announcer Ed Whalen quit on the air (not shown in the version on YouTube), and Stampede was temporarily banned from Calgary.

In the ’90s, Jim Cornette occasionally brought The Mongolian Stomper in as a special attraction local legend babyface. Gouldie had settled in the area, working various law enforcement jobs and staying in shape by biking long distances.

Our condolences go out to Archie’s family and friends.

  • AJ Styles’ Management Issues Statement On TNA Claims

Bill Behrens has worn many hats in the wrestling business for at least two decades, from television syndicator to promoter to booking agent to management to legal representation. He currently serves as those last three for AJ Styles (real name Allen Jones). In light of TNA’s statement claiming that Styles (as well as Karl Anderson and Doc Gallows) backed out of signed agreements to join the promotion, Behrens issued the following statement to PWInsider.com:

No contract was ever finalized nor signed by the parties.

That I would need to be involved in the contract process was known by TNA prior to my involvement and understood by them.

TNA and its 1st lawyer did not present in a timely fashion a contract that accurately reflected previous discussions at all. That created great concern tied to past experiences. In that time and prior there was other interest and there were other firm offers on the table and other discussions.

TNA was aware of other interest and various conflicts. TNA was aware a final contract was required. It was creating that contract and controlled that timetable. Too much time passed early on. Other things came into play. No contract was ever finalized with TNA.

To suggest I make any decision for my clients is to misunderstand my role and diminish the role each talent has in making their own decisions, and insults the talent in the process.

The statement came following PWInsider’s lengthy report on the matter from last night, where Mike Johnson outlined the basics of the situation:

TNA badly wanted Styles back, with the feeling that his departure badly damaged the the company since he was their big home-grown star a la Sting in WCW. They started talking in November, and Styles brought up the possibility of Gallows and Anderson also coming in. His Bullet Club stablemates were unhappy over their split of the Bullet Club merchandise profits with New Japan Pro Wrestling and looking for a change of scenery. The trio met with Dixie Carter, John Gaburick, and other TNA staff at Carter’s house on December 14th and the TNA side felt the meeting went great, with a plan in place for a surprise Styles return in a pretape on the Pop TV debut show. From there, when the long form contracts were to be finalized, TNA took their time (and were slowed down by the holidays), a better offer came in (presumably from WWE), and the wrestlers decided not to make the deal.

(So yes, it looks like this may have had little to do with WWE raiding NJPW. It just looked that way with Shinsuke Nakamura also leaving and Mauro Ranallo being tapped as the new voice of SmackDown.)

Exactly what was signed or agreed to is where Johnson’s version and the other stories going around start to conflict with each other. The TNA side is clearly swearing that Styles and company signed something, but if they did, it wasn’t their actual contract, as noted by Behrens in his statement. From there, accounts include:

The truth is likely somewhere in the middle. One person with knowledge of the situation posited to me that if they did sign anything, it was nothing that would be legally binding, which fits with TNA issuing the statement without taking or even threatening legal action. Johnson’s article does include the TNA claim that Styles was sent plane tickets to go to Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, but your mileage may vary if that actually proves anything.

  • TNA Issues Statement Claiming AJ Styles, Doc Gallows, & Karl Anderson Backed Out Of A Signed Deal

Note: Since TNA’s website has been going down, you can also try Google Cache and Archive.is mirrors of their statement on this matter.

TNA has just made one of the strangest moves in company history. Think of the ground that covers. A little while ago, they posted a statement on their website saying that AJ Styles (real name Allen Jones), Doc Gallows (real name Drew Hankinson), and Karl Anderson (real name Chad Allegra) had committed verbally and in writing to signing to TNA in December, though they hadn’t signed final contracts yet. According to TNA, this happened after a meeting at Dixie Carter’s Nashville, Tennessee home on December 14th where, and afterwards, merchandise was designed on top of plane tickets being mailed. The claim is that this all fell apart over the Christmas holiday, when the wrestlers broke off communication before signing their long-form agreements. According to the statement, “AJ’s lawyer contacted TNA and stated the wrestlers had changed their mind and would not be honoring their commitment to TNA.”

The initial reaction I’ve seen seems to be that TNA, having taken this tact and not threatening legal action in the statement is significant. Why? It comes off like they don’t have confidence in being able to take legal action against Styles et al or the promotion they’re signing with (presumably WWE). On top of that, Anderson/Allegra was still under contract to New Japan Pro Wrestling while all of this was going on, which seems like it might not be the best thing to admit publicly. Either way, unless TNA is simultaneously serving the wrestlers and their destination promotion (again, presumably WWE) with legal action, it seems like something is missing from their version of the story.

It’s worth noting that in 2012, TNA sued former talent relations coordinator Brian Wittenstein as well as World Wrestling Entertainment after WWE hired him and, unsolicited, he offered up a file of TNA contract information. In the complaint, TNA said that “The disclosure exposes TNA to potential liability with respect to its contract — WWE knows the details of TNA’s contractual relationships with its wrestling talent, which could allow WWE to place itself in the right place, at the right time, with an offer to TNA’s talent at just the right place.”

It was alleged that Ric Flair tried to back out of his TNA contract right after Wittenstein gave the information to WWE, but also that WWE quickly told TNA what happened. WWE attorney Jerry McDevitt said at the time that “Our reaction is that no good deed ever goes unpunished. What the WWE did here is what you would hope any company would do in these circumstances it found itself in.” TNA dropped the lawsuit in 2012, but as it was going on, everyone in WWE treated TNA talent as radioactive, with Gerald Brisco reportedly being told he couldn’t even visit his son Wes (a TNA wrestler) in the hospital.

More on this story as it develops…

  • TNA Offer Of Non-Wrestling Contract For Kurt Angle Is A Long Time Coming

With Kurt Angle’s TNA contract expiring soon and him pushing his bouts on the upcoming United Kingdom tour as his retirement matches, you would think that this is the end of him in TNA. As noted earlier, that’s not the case: TNA has offered a new, non-wrestler contract that would keep him around as their in-house legend, a promotional ambassador, and road agent. He hasn’t signed as of yet, and has said that he wants to take a break from the pro wrestling scene after the UK tour. Still, if the story about the offer and the nature thereof is true, it’s a nice gesture and well-earned.

Angle is well known for his parade of neck injuries and ailments over the years, including a benign spinal tumor that he had removed last year, keeping him out of action for several months. It all goes back to to the Olympic trials in 1996, where he stuck his head out to avoid back exposure and broke his neck. He found a doctor willing inject some kind of numbing agent (like lidocaine or novocaine) into his neck and won the trials en route to capturing the gold medal at heavyweight in freestyle wrestling.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QQ-osvJEbOk

After Angle had that injury repaired, he didn’t have any major neck problems until 2003, when his arms started to atrophy from nerve damage. A plan was put into place where he’d be removed from his WrestleMania main event title defense against Brock Lesnar and Chris Benoit would be inserted into the mix in an “emergency” storyline, but Angle had second thoughts and pledged to work through the pay-per-view. As shown in WWE’s “The Mania of WrestleMania” documentary, he went into shock right after the match and had to be hospitalized. Originally scheduled to have spinal fusion surgery, he opted to have a minimally invasive “cleanup” procedure done instead…which was promptly undone by one chair shot to the head. He’s since had a number of similar surgeries done by the same doctor.

Angle was simultaneously dealing with an addiction to painkillers and alcohol throughout much of the same period. While he didn’t admit it at the time, refusing treatment was what reportedly cost him his job with WWE in 2006. He was noticeably slurring his words during his first TNA interview, but didn’t go to rehab until 2013. At that point, he had already been arrested on multiple charges of driving under the influence or driving while intoxicated, one of which saw the arresting officer claim that Angle had pills in his mouth while he spoke. It seems like going to rehab for the first time after so many years of problems stuck with him, and he’s been in noticeably much better spirits since, with a new sense of clarity that he’s talked about.

  • Tammy Sytch Sex Tape Already Filmed; Offer Exposed As Storyline

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KAJZ85kpcP0

As has been covered here the last few days,Tammy “Sunny” Sytch and adult film production company Vivid Video have gone back and forth in the media stemming from Sytch putting her WWE Hall of Fame ring up for sale on eBay. Vivid then went to TMZ, saying that they’d give her $100,000 for the ring…and a 90 minute sex tape. From the outside, it looked like the type of grandstanding that TMZ often reports on, just a case where it  appears more likely to happen than usual because of whatever Sytch has been promising to show fans on Skype as of late.

While TMZ is now reporting that Sytch just signed a contract with Vivid, it turns out that this is just an angle. How do we know? The video has already been shot.

SEScoops was sent a link (not safe for work, but we made sure you get a warning first in case you accidentally click) within Vivid’s website featuring the trailer for the video, which s titled “Sunny Side Up,” None of that is safe for work or appropriate for embedding here, even censored, but if you want proof in the event if the page being removed, this screen grab that we were sent of a disclaimer from the video has no such issues:

Tammy Sytch Sunny Side Up disclaimer (Vivid Video)
Tammy Sytch Sunny Side Up disclaimer (Vivid Video)

It seems like the decision was made that this would be the best way to promote the video, by virtue of getting an ongoing storyline going on TMZ that would more and more attention as it went on. There had been rumors within wrestling that the video had already been shot several months ago, but there was never anything close to concrete proof. Sytch had spent the last year or so openly shilling Skype video chat sessions with fans on social media for the last year or so. The posts/tweets were usually accompanying by photos of her in lingerie. Those who emailed her got a reply that went something like this one that Jerry Wiseman published at Examiner.com:

    Hey!

I’ll be Skyping tonight after 7pm eastern time

It’s $10 for every 4 minutes of regular chat

$50 for 10 minutes with some skin (boobs)

$100 for 10 minutes to see a whole lot more ?

Let me know if you’re interested, and I’ll give you payment info

Once payment comes thru, I’ll contact you to set up a time

It’s a lot of fun! And you can do whatever you want on your end

    Tam xoxo

We have no idea if Vivid will pull the trailer when this story goes up, but it’s been archived elsewhere if they do. If the $100,000 figure is real, that’s considerably less than she was offered by Playboy at the peak of her pro wrestling career.

  • Call For Questions For The Return Of The SEScoops Mailbag

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=243g7dRjQNU

We’re bringing back the mailbag here as a regular feature that will run each weekend at SEScoops, so if you’ve got anything you want to ask, please post it in the comments. You can ask whatever you want (within reason, of course) about pro wrestling, whether it has to do with current events, history, international wrestling, match recommendations, and so on and so forth.

If you want to read previous iterations of the mailbag, check out the archives.

  • NJPW Discontinuing Shinsuke Nakamura Shirts After January 31st

NJPW Discontinuing Shinsuke Nakamura Shirts After January 31st

This shouldn’t come as any surprise, but according to Pro Wrestling Sheet’s Ryan Satin, New Japan Pro Wrestling has instructed Pro Wrestling Tees to stop printing Shinsuke Nakamura shirts after the end of the month. That’s when Nakamura’s contract expires, a result of NJPW sticking to the Japanese tradition of annual contracts that all come up at the same time even long past it stopped being a workable idea. Any stock that’s already been printed can still be sold for obvious reasons.

Pro Wrestling Tees quickly confirmed this by sending out an email blast titled “Only 10 days Left To Get Shinsuke Nakamura NJPW T-shirts.” It also said that “After January 31st, All NJPW Shinsuke Nakamura t-shirts will be removed!” So it looks like if they’re going to have leftover stock, it’s not going to be sold on the website. Obviously, if you want to get the shirts before they’re gone, then check out Pro Wrestling Tees’ NJPW store.

Also, for fun, here’s a great violin cover of “Subconscious,” Nakamura’s NJPW entrance music:

  • Hulk Hogan & Gawker To Enter Mediation As Sex Tape Trial Approaches

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3ki_MGwOopI

As first reported yesterday by Capital New York, Hulk Hogan’s lawsuit against Gawker took a curious turn yesterday during a brief hearing in Pinellas County Court. With most of the lawyers appearing via phone conference, the stated goal of the hearing was for Judge Pamela Campbell to deliver her outstanding rulings on matters not decided during last week’s marathon-length hearing. After ruling in favor of Gawker on one motion, she suggested the two sides re-enter mediation to try to come to a settlement. The perception of Campbell from those following the case is that her rulings have been heavily slanted towards Hogan (but not necessarily to the point of improprieties or anything like that), so what happened yesterday came as a bit of a shock.

The motion granted was filed on December 22nd, Gawker had filed requested “access to corrected and unredacted DVDs produced by the FBI” stemming from their lawsuit against the federal law enforcement agency. Back in 2012, the FBI had investigated Hogan’s allegations that he was being extorted by whoever had stolen security camera videos of him having sex with Heather Cole at the home she shared wth then husband Bubba the Love Sponge Clem. That led to a sting operation where the FBI seized the three DVDs of Hogan and Cole, and the video of the sting itself took up two DVDs, so the FBI ended up producing five DVDs to Gawker in their lawsuit to get the records of the investigation. Gawker had issues early on with the DVDs  having glitches and edits that shouldn’t be there, but it was eventually rectified. Only the lawyers for each side can see the videos, which they were not sent copies of, and Gawker wanted to see them again.

Judge Campbell watched all five DVDs over the weekend, and it seems as if she noticed something that she thinks the lawyers for both sides missed. “I know that at our hearing on all of the motions in limine, which I believe was last July 1st, there were motions — there was a motion in limine from the plaintiff on the issue of racial slurs, and that part of it we need to revisit. I think after you all have had an opportunity to review the DVDs, you will see that.” It’s difficult to know exactly what they discussed or even what was being argued other than that it involved Hogan’s use of racial slurs, but she also added that “after the attorneys have an opportunity to look at those DVDs, I’m going to suggest that the attorneys or that you go back to mediation. I’m not going to require it, but I think you’ll see why.” She also made a point of saying that the lawyers should re-listen to the audio CDs of the sting operation before they get the opportunity to watch the DVDs.

With so much of the relevant information being sealed/confidential, understanding why she thinks they should try to settle is going to be incredibly difficult. There had been two previous attempts at mediation and obviously neither went well. Hogan attorney Charles Harder told Capital New York that the results of the next mediation session “depends on what Gawker’s side has to say. If they are going to say what they’ve said in the past, I don’t see any chance of settlement.” Harder also made news yesterday for representing another plaintiff in a new, otherwise unrelated lawsuit against Gawker.

  • Gawker Selling Shares To Fund Hulk Hogan Lawsuit Defense

Yesterday, we told you about the reports that Gawker was seeking to bring on outside investors for the first time as a way of making sure that legal fees for defending Hulk Hogan’s lawsuit don’t bleed them dry. Today, it’s official: The New York Times and the Wall Street Journal are reporting that Columbus Nova Technology Partners, a Silicon Valley investment firm, is buying a minority stake in the company. In addition to helping to pay legal bills, the new cash infusion will help fund growth initiatives.

Jason Epstein, managing director of Columbus Nova, will get a seat on Gawker’s board. He told the Times that “We have been attracted to the company because of the authenticity with which they approach all storytelling. I will have no input on the editorial, or the editorial mix. Any changes will be driven one way or another by Nick and the team.” Gawker refused to comment on the specifics of the deal itself, but company founder Nick Denton did speak to the Times about the site in broader terms.
