Undisputed Era Talk Dream WrestleMania Opponents

Undisputed Era recently spoke to Sam Roberts at Ringside Collectibles’ Ringside Fest. The NXT stable have been on a tear since their formation and have only grown in stature since the inclusion of Roderick Strong. The four men revealed to Roberts who their ‘dream’ WrestleMania opponents would be during the interview.

Bobby Fish made an interesting pick, stating “Give me Vince McMahon. I’m going straight to the top, I don’t mess around, man.” Kyle O’Reilly was Fish’s longtime tag partner in Ring of Honor as part of reDragon, he had a more obvious choice saying “Daniel Bryan. Nothing crazy, just a straight up match.”

The de-facto leader of the group Adam Cole chose someone who he appears to be emulating more and more as he progresses in NXT, stating “Now that he is back, Shawn Michaels.” Roderick Strong also chimed in saying “He (O’Reilly) took me pick, but I guess I’d have to go with A.J. Styles.

Cole finished by saying “That is shaping up to be one heck of a WrestleMania card, if I do say so myself.” Strong also made the comment that “we can do an eight-man, Vince’s team v. us.

The Undisputed Era will be taking on the team of Ricochet, Pete Dunne and the War Raiders at War Games NXT Takeover on November 17th.

  • ATLAS Championship – Trent Seven issues an open challenge to ‘anyone.’
  • Jordan Devlin vs Chris Ridgeway

  • PROGRESS Tag Team Championship Match – Aussie Open (c) vs Chris Brookes and Timothy Thatcher (Calamari Thatch Killers)

Also has ready confirmed that PROGRESS World Champion WALTER will be taking on the Number 1 contender Mark Haskins for the coveted title. Haskins became the number 1 contender after this past week’s ‘Pumpkin Spice Progress’ show. Haskins defeated both Chris Brookes and Jimmy Havoc to earn this shot at the Austrian powerhouse.

You can check out our exclusive interview with Mark Haskins here. The top UK star discusses his run in PROGRESS, plans for Japan, Vicky Haskins and his ideal independent opponent.

PROGRESS Wrestling has also announced a top international bout for Chapter 78.

wXw Unified Champion Ilja Dragunov will be heading to the O2 Ritz on November 11th to take on ‘The Product’ David Starr.

This will be Dragunov’s second bout for the UK promotion. Former promoter of Westside Xtreme Wrestling (wXw) Christian Michael Jakobi appeared during PROGRESS Wrestling’s Super Strong Style 16 event earlier this year and challenged the reigning WWE UK Champion Pete Dunne to a bout against the wXw World United Heavyweight Champion. This match took place at Wembley Arena and Dunne was victorious via submission.

Rev Pro Uprising (11/09) Full Card

Revolution Pro Wrestling will be presenting their Uprising 2018 event from the world famous York Hall. The Bethnal Green show will feature some huge international bouts with the headline spot going to Tomohiro Ishii and David Starr. Starr challenged Ishii to the bout and Rev Pro granted his wish. If Starr wins this bout he will be a two weight Champion in the company.

Here’s the full card for tonight:

  • Rev Pro British Heavyweight Championship Match – Tomohiro Ishii (c) vs David Starr
  • Rev Pro British Tag Team Championship – Zack Sabre Jr and Minoru Suzuki (c) vs Aussie Open (Mark Davis and Kyle Fletcher)
  • Josh Bodom vs Chris Ridgeway
  • Taichi vs Chris Brookes
  • MK McKinnan vs ‘Speedball’ Mike Bailey
  • Satoshi Kojima vs WALTER
  • El Desperado vs El Phantasmo

Revolution Pro (Rev Pro) also debuted on FreeSportsUK recently. The UK based company will be using the nationwide channel as the home for their new TV show going forward.

You can check out the exclusive interview we conducted with Rev Pro owner Andy Quildan here. When we discussed the timing of the new show Andy confirmed that “WoS had no impact on our decision. In all honesty whilst I watch as much product as possible from WWE, ROH, NJPW, CMLL to all the indies here in the UK, aside from learning best (or at times worst) practice I try not to let what others are doing dictate the way I choose to run my business.”

The 3 Count: Tetsuya Naito & The New Japan Stars WWE Wants to Sign

As we reported recently, Tetsuya Naito was approached by WWE around the time of this year’s Dominion event. WWE approached Naito with a view to bringing the Japanese star Stateside. Naito, being the (astute?) business man he is turned down the offer and opted to stay with New Japan. The Los Ingobernables leader stated in a recent interview with Tokyo Sports that “I didn’t even give it thought. This New Japan ring is already the world’s No. 1 stage. The fans know this. That’s why I think we should focus on our home crowd before looking international.” There have since been humorous reports of how Naito left the restaurant and left WWE officials with the bill, but these are not yet confirmed.
Speculation

The Wrestling Observer Newsletter recently made some interesting comments on WWE’s current stance of NJPW talent. As well as Naito, WWE are reportedly looking at two other stars to bring over. There are no names given, but Dave Meltzer claims that “one would be a huge surprise and the other would be a great worker who I didn’t see flourishing in the WWE system. But [they] also probably wouldn’t have any reservations about moving to the U.S. like many of the Japanese might.”

Again, we have nothing concrete but the descriptions given lead to three names in my mind. When you look at the phrase “a great worker who I didn’t see flourishing in the WWE system” I instantly think of Tomohiro Ishii. Tomohiro is one of the most well respected and tenured stars in Japanese wrestling currently, a bastion of ‘strong style.’ It’s long since been part of the general consensus that whilst Ishii is a top star in Japan he probably wouldn’t be suited to a WWE schedule or in-ring style. Ishii is also no stranger to performing abroad however, the Rev Pro British Heavyweight Champion appears regularly for Rev Pro in the UK and OTT in Ireland.

Ishii in WWE?

Would and could Ishii move over to the US to perform for WWE? He has the credentials and legitimacy that would fit alongside the likes of Kassius Ohno, Keith Lee and Matt Riddle. Should Ishii move to WWE if the opportunity arose? In my opinion no. Ishii has a specific and ‘stiff’ style that has lit up New Japan over the past decade, the ‘Stone Pitbull’ is one of those performers who doesn’t sit at the top of the card but he can easily be brought up and used if the need arose, kind of like a ‘strong style’ Dolph Ziggler.

“One Huge Surprise”

When Meltzer claims that “one would be a huge surprise” I turn to Kazuchika Okada and Hiroshi Tanahashi. These two men are New Japan through and through but would have very different motivations for leaving. Okada is only 31 years old, tall and has charisma in droves, if WWE aren’t looking at him as a potential signee down the road then there is something drastically wrong. The ‘Rainmaker’ however is as previously mentioned a full bore ‘company guy,’ his last stint in the United States for TNA Wrestling may well have left a sour taste in his mouth and could have skewed any potential move to North America. Should Okada go to WWE? Not yet…but if WWE are looking to truly expand globally with the likes of NXT UK and potentially NXT Germany taking off soon then for your Japanese based product you MUST have Okada.

The ‘Ace’ of WWE?

So, we move on to Hiroshi Tanahashi, the ‘Ace’ of New Japan. Tanahashi is 41 years old and has had a long, knee injury stricken career. If you look at WWE’s top tier main event talent then Tanahashi isn’t even that old, but could he cope with a WWE schedule including house shows? Possibly not. Again I look at the phrase “huge surprise” and can’t help but think of what the ‘Ace’ could bring to WWE…Shinsuke Nakamura has had an interesting stop-start career in NXT and WWE, but Nakamura has seen some incredible success; Royal Rumble winner, United States Champion and NXT Champion just part of his WWE resume. Should Tanahashi go to WWE? Yes, yes he should.

There are probably New Japan diehards reaching for their pitchforks right now. “Hiroshi Tanahashi in WWE!? They will misuse him! He’ll be jobbing in no time!” That might be the case, or WWE could position Tanahashi as a top tier main event star alongside the likes of AJ Styles, Samoa Joe, Daniel Bryan et al on Smackdown. Staying in Japan for your entire career is by no means a detriment, but if the biggest stage in the world is available to you and you have the charisma and starpower of Tanahashi why wouldn’t you take the chance? Nakamura took the chance and it worked, you can’t convince me otherwise.

British Strong Style Announced for wXw 18th Anniversary Show

German based promotion wXw has announced that British Strong Style will be appearing at their 18th Anniversary show. WWE United Kingdom Champion Pete Dunne, Tyler Bate and Trent Seven will be joining the 18th Anniversary show on December 22nd in Oberhausen.

This follows the news that NXT Superstar Axel Dieter Jr would be returning for the special Anniversary show. Dieter Jr left wXw back in April of 2017. The German Superstar made his way to NXT but as of yet has not been heavily featured on the WWE Network programme. Dieter Jr finally made his NXT debut in August of this year in a losing effort against Keith Lee.

As well as his time in wXw, Dieter Jr had an impressive run for the UK’s PROGRESS promotion. Bouts against The London Riots, The South Pacific Power Trip (TK Cooper and Travis Banks) and The Hunter Brothers alongside WALTER gained him a strong following. Dieter Jr also faced British Strong Style (Pete Dunne, Trent Seven and Tyler Bate) alongside Timothy Thatcher and WALTER.

British Strong Style’s opponents have not yet been named for the event. Although a potential Dream Match against Ringkampf’s Axel Dieter Jr, Timothy Thatcher and WALTER could be in order.

PAC Announced for Dragon Gate Championship Match

Dragon Gate has announced a huge Championship match for their December 4th show in Korakuen Hall. Former WWE Cruiserweight Champion PAC/Neville will be facing Masato Yoshino. The bout will be contested for Yoshino’s Open The Dream Gate Championship.

PAC recently took part in his first singles match since leaving WWE. The former Neville faced Flamita in an International Special Singles Match for Dragon Gate’s ‘The Gate of Destiny’ event (11/04). PAC took the win after hitting his renamed ‘Black Arrow’ in around 18 minutes. You can check out some of the highlights from the incredible bout here

In other PAC/Neville related news Japan’s Dragon Gate promotion recently confirmed their new streaming service which featured PAC in a short promo package hyping the new over the top service alongside his RED stablemates. Big Name Absent from Wrestle Kingdom 13 Poster

New Japan has released the official poster for their biggest card of the year. Wrestle Kingdom 13 will be taking place on January 4th from the world famous Tokyo Dome.

The poster features Kenny Omega, Hiroshi Tanahashi, Kota Ibushi, Kazuchika Okada, KUSHIDA, Jay White and Tetsuya Naito. One of the biggest omissions from the poster is the IWGP Intercontinental Champion Chris Jericho.

Chris Jericho recently returned to New Japan Pro Wrestling at the Power Struggle event in Osaka, Japan. The IWGP Intercontinental Champion defended successfully against EVIL after locking him in a Walls of Jericho that transitioned into a Liontamer.

When Jericho would not release the submission Tetsuya Naito appeared and forced Jericho to retreat to the back. Naito then issued a direct challenge to Y2J for the Intercontinental Championship. It is not yet known whether this bout will be taking place at Wrestle Kingdom or Madison Square Garden in April.

Jericho appeared in a backstage interview following the win and declared that he would not face Tetsuya Naito. Chris Jericho stated that as he already beat Naito at Dominion earlier this year that there would be no rematch. Jericho even went as far to say that it definitely wouldn’t happen at “Wrestle Kingdom, Madison Square Garden or anywhere.”

There’s a good chance that NJPW consciously left Jericho off of the poster. Whilst Y2J is a big international star the emphasis appears to be on ‘homegrown’ talents. Kenny Omega and Jay White certainly found their feet in the company and the surrounding talents are native Japanese stars.

RAW Star To Receive Renewed Push

WWE are reportedly looking to push one of their more overlooked Superstars in the near future. This week’s episode of RAW saw Apollo Crews beat Jinder Mahal. Crews took the win after hitting a Standing Moonsault which seemed somewhat of a shock. Crews lost his last bout to Dolph Ziggler on RAW.

On the latest Wrestling Observer Radio Dave Meltzer confirmed that there are new creative plans for the Superstar. Meltzer claimed that WWE are looking to push Crews as a ‘highlight reel’ on the show. Crews is one of the more athletically gifted stars on the RAW roster, so this new vision may have potential.

It is also been reported that Crews is no longer part of the Titus Worldwide faction.

News surrounding Apollo Crews has been sparse over the past few months. Crews lost and regained his surname from his character earlier this year. There was speculation that his name change may have been in response to Nikolas Cruz, the Florida school shooter who killed 17 people earlier this year.

wXw Announce Stars for Road To 16 Carat Gold Event

  • David Starr
  • Kyle Fletcher (Aussie Open)
  • Mark Davis (Aussie Open)
  • Lucky Kid
  • Bobby Gunns
  • Francis Kaspin
  • Jay Skillet

Tickets for the show are available to purchase here

wXw’s 16 Carat Gold tournament is regarded as one of the most prestigious in European wrestling. Several top WWE/NXT stars have appeared in and won the event. These include Aleister Black, Sami Zayn and Kassius Ohno. WALTER and Zack Sabre Jr are also synonymous with the event.

The 2017 and 2018 iterations of the tournament are widely regarded as two of the greatest in European wrestling history, you can check them out now on wXw’s on demand service, it certainly matches up to the annual New Japan G1 and PROGRESS Super Strong 16 tournaments on quality.

Highlight’s from PAC/Neville’s First Singles Match Since Leaving WWE

PAC has had his first singles match since leaving WWE. The former Neville faced Flamita in an International Special Singles Match for Dragon Gate’s ‘The Gate of Destiny’ event (11/04). PAC took the win after hitting his renamed ‘Black Arrow’ in around 18 minutes. Here’s some of the highlights from the incredible bout:

In other PAC/Neville related news Japan’s Dragon Gate promotion recently confirmed their new streaming service which featured PAC in a short promo package hyping the new over the top service alongside his RED stablemates. Fans will be able watch live/past shows for just over $13 a month. PAC made his return to the company earlier this year after leaving WWE’s 205 Live brand.

Revolution Pro (Rev Pro) has announced that PAC will be returning to the promotion. The former WWE Cruiserweight Champion will be appearing at the Portsmouth Guildhall on November 22nd. Tickets for the show are available to purchase via Rev Pro’s official website here.

The company has not yet announced PAC’s opponent for the show. The Portsmouth shows for Rev Pro are big events but not on the level of their York Hall extravaganzas. It is likely that PAC will be in a top feature match but not on the level that you would expect at a venue like York Hall. With Rev Pro’s New Japan links it would be ideal for PAC to take on one of the top NJPW stars but it is more likely that he faces a Rev Pro ‘homegrown’ talent such as El Phantasmo or Josh Bodom.

Kenny Omega Fires Shots at Hiroshi Tanahashi Following Power Struggle

Kenny Omega recently appeared at New Japan’s Power Struggle event in Osaka, Japan. The IWGP Heavyweight Champion teamed with Kota Ibushi to defeat Hiroshi Tanahashi and David Finlay.

Tanahashi won the G1 Climax tournament earlier this year and is set to face Omega for the IWGP Heavyweight Championship at Wrestle Kingdom on January 4th.

During a post match interview Omega made some scathing comments about Tanahashi. The Champion stated that “I’ve skipped out on this tour to focus on my other goals, my other dreams, my aspirations. People keep saying ‘Kenny, you’re a terrible champion. WHY aren’t you making the small shows?’ I’ll tell you why, I’m a business man at heart. When it comes to business, you have to make your challengers look credible. LOOK WHAT HAPPENED. I show up Tana, you get the big L. You look like a big L. Does he look like the challenger of the Tokyo Dome main event? No. I am trying to do you a service, I am trying to do this whole company a favour. I’m trying to allow you to pad your record and look really strong going into January 4th. But you call me out and you get the Golden Lovers.”

Chris Jericho “That’s the first Classic match that EVIL has ever had”

Chris Jericho returned to New Japan Pro Wrestling at the Power Struggle event in Osaka, Japan.

Backstage Footage

NJPW recently released the backstage footage of Jericho after the bout. Y2J made some interesting comments regarding his opponent EVIL. Jericho said to the NJPW reporters “you see that? That’s what is called a ‘classic match.’ The first classic match that EVIL has ever had, and that’s just number 257 for me. Classic, after classic, after classic. They don’t call me the GOAT for nothing. If you don’t understand that because you’re Japanese it’s Greatest of All Time. It’s not a tag line, it’s not a catchphrase, it’s the truth. Find me somebody ANYWHERE in the world, in the history of the business that’s had more Intercontinental Championships than I have. Tell me one, can you do it? No. I know you all speak perfect English, but you can’t speak English now, you “can’t remember.”

Never Lost in New Japan to The Japanese

Jericho also made some interesting points about his record in New Japan, stating “The Gaijin won. It’s just gonna continue. I’ve NEVER lost a match in New Japan against the Japanese, ever. And I never will. Like I said, EVIL you’re a great performer. What a great match that was, one of the best that I’ve had in a long time. But I won, just like I said I would. I made you famous like I said I would. Naito, I made you famous in June. I made you famous in Korakuen Hall in January. You wanna be famous again? Find somebody else. NO REMATCH for Naito, EVER.”

First Competitors for Pro-Wrestling All Star Battle in Japan Announced

The first competitors have been announced for the “Pro-Wrestling All Star Battle” in Sumo Hall on February 19, 2019. The show will be one of the biggest co-branded events in recent Japanese history. Stars from NJPW, All Japan, Big Japan and NOAH will be performing on the Super-show in February. This show will a commemoration of 20 years since Giant Baba’s passing. It is also 60 years since the Tokyo Sports newspaper started their publication. It is unlikely that any ‘dream bouts’ will be taking place, but it is a big deal for the Japanese promotions such as NJPW and NOAH teaming up for a show.

NJPW Commentator Chris Charlton confirmed that “The card marks 60 years of Tokyo Sports. The last All Star Battle was in August 1979 and featured Giant Baba and Antonio Inoki tagging together for the very last time.

Here’s the currently confirmed names:

Chris Jericho ‘Refuses’ To Face Tetsuya Naito, Where Will The Match Happen?

Chris Jericho returned to New Japan Pro Wrestling at the Power Struggle event in Osaka, Japan.

Chris Jericho’s next appearance for New Japan could be some way off. With the Tag League usually dominating the December scheduling we could be waiting for January and the Wrestle Kingdom show. Whilst it is very likely that the bout will happen at Wrestle Kingdom an opportunity to bring the match to Madison Square Garden might be too good to miss. There is some uncertainty as to the star-power that ROH and New Japan will have come April 2019. There have been several rumors and reports that WWE will be looking to ‘poach’ the likes of the Young Bucks and Kenny Omega before the huge event in MSG. Having a marquee match with Y2J against Tetsuya Naito for one of NJPW’s top titles could be a big draw if the company decide to opt for an iPPV offering.

IWGP Junior Heavyweight Number 1 Contender Named

Taiji Ishimori has emerged as the new number 1 contender to the IWGP Junior Heavyweight Championship. The Bullet Club member attacked current Champion KUSHIDA with a crutch following his tag team bout loss. Ishimori was using the crutch due to his previously diagnosed ankle injury on November 1st.

NJPW confirmed via their English language site NJPW1972.com on 11/01 that “Taiji Ishimori will not participate in the event in Shizuoka at the Twin Messe Shizuoka South Building today. Thursday November 1st, due to a left ankle injury. This happened during the event in Nagano on October 31st.”

After the attack Ishimori cut a short promo. He confirmed that he was next in line for an IWGP Junior Heavyweight title shot.

The Bullet Club member was revealed as the new BONE SOLDIER earlier this year. He has been setting the Junior division on fire ever since. Ishimori has also competed in this year’s Best of the Super Juniors tournament, he gained 5 wins and 2 loses in the tournament and advanced to the finals. Taiji came up short in the BOSJ as he lost to Hiromu Takahashi in the final.

Highlights of Chris Jericho’s Recent IWGP Intercontinental Title Defence

Chris Jericho returned to New Japan Pro Wrestling at the Power Struggle event in Osaka, Japan. The IWGP Intercontinental Champion defended successfully against EVIL after locking him in a Walls of Jericho that transitioned into a Liontamer.

After the match concluded, Jericho continued to attack EVIL, putting him back into the submission hold until Naito ran in to save his LIJ teammate. Jericho escaped and began to leave, but not before he teased a match between the two, indicating to an inevitable confrontation between himself and Naito for the belt.

It is likely that Jericho will now go on to face Tetsuya Naito for the IC Title at Wrestle Kingdom. There is also a strong possibility that Jericho appears at the Madison Square Garden event for New Japan over WrestleMania weekend next year so the bout could happen there. Either way this is a huge bout for Naito in terms of mainstream appeal. This could help propel the Los Ingobernable leader to greater heights in New Japan.

Check out some of the highlights from the bout below. These include a hellacious table spot, a vicious chair-brace into the corner post and an sharp snap Codebreaker from Y2J.

NJPW Teasing an Okada/Tanahashi Alliance

NJPW has recently been adding more English language content to their YouTube channel. One of the new web series entitled ‘The Wire’ has posed an intriguing question to the fans of New Japan. Will Hiroshi Tanahashi and Kazuchika Okada form an alliance?

‘The Ace’ of New Japan Tanahashi broke up an attack by the Firing Squad on Okada at the ‘Road To’ Power Struggle event on October 27th. Tanahashi stormed the ring and attacked Jay White, Tanga Loa and Bad Luck Fale. Tama Tonga then joined in the fray and got taken down by a double back elbow by Okada and Tanahashi.

The Okada/Tanahashi feud is one of the most pivotal in New Japan’s history. The two men have had some incredible matches in the past. Okada stated in a recent backstage interview that “shaking hands (with Tanahashi) was…friendly. I guess, for the first time, Tanahashi has finally made a friend. But, that doesn’t mean we are going to team up. But, let me thank you for helping me this time.

Tanahashi also made some interesting comments, stating that “Even I don’t know what is going to happen. Pro Wrestling is…not only about betrayal.

Shane McMahon Wins WWE World Cup At Crown Jewel

The winner of WWE’s World Cup has been crowned…and it’s Shane McMahon. After a gruelling tournament between some of WWE’s best Superstars and Legends the Commissioner of Smackdown Live has taken the trophy.

Shane entered himself in the finals of the tournament after original Smackdown finalist Miz couldn’t compete. The final was set to be Miz versus Dolph Ziggler, a fairly odd choice to begin with. The Miz seemed to positioned as a heroic babyface, stating that he could compete and had “never been injured.”

Miz and Dolph started the bout after Ziggler’s ‘bodyguard’ Drew McIntyre was ejected from the ring. Miz was quickly taken down outside of the ring with a suspected ankle injury, he protested until he was declared unfit to compete. Shane McMahon opted to interject himself in the match before the referee declared Ziggler the winner.

McMahon took the win after hitting his Coast to Coast dropkick on Ziggler in the corner. WWE referred to Shane as the ‘Best in the World’ following the win and McMahon celebrated with the trophy. It was a very odd end to the World Cup tournament, completely surreal.
