Japanese wrestling legend Hiroshi Tanahashi recently spoke to New Japan Pro Wrestling’s English Language site NJPW1972.com on the upcoming Best of the Super Juniors tournament. The former IWGP Heavyweight Champion was on hand to give his thoughts on the prestigious tournament and offer his insight on the key matches to watch.
When asked who he believed would win the tournament, he stated that Los Ingobernables’ Hiromu Takahashi would go all the way and become the eventual winner, stating that “my pick is Hiromu. When it comes to getting motivated for his matches and really making the fans happy, Hiromu is the best. There might be people that rival him on pure ability, but he has that charismatic X factor that will make him win I think.”
Tanahashi also picked his top four bouts in the A & B Blocks, with the following bouts getting the nod out of the upcoming field:
- Will Ospreay vs ACH from May 20th
- Sho vs Takahashi from June 2nd
- El Desperado vs Takahashi from May 22nd
- Taguchi vs Marty Scurll from June 2nd
New Japan’s Best of the Super Juniors begins on May 18th and Night 1 of the tournament will be available to view for free on NJPWWorld.com

Taiji Ishimori recently made his return to New Japan Pro Wrestling by attacking IWGP Junior Heavyweight Champion Will Ospreay at the Wrestling Dontaku show on May 4th. The ‘New Bone Soldier’ claimed that he was in New Japan to ‘get to the top of the junior heavyweight division’ and with his inclusion in the Best of the Super Juniors he now has his opportunity to put himself in the title picture.
Ishimori recently spoke to New Japan’s English Language site on a variety of topics, here are some of the highlights:
That’s a stupid question. The Bullet Club is the most famous group going. I can be in Japan and still have my name go worldwide. If I’m in Bullet Club, Taiji Ishimori’s name goes global. And this way, I can pick fights with anyone in the junior division, Marty Scurll excepted.
When asked about the Bullet Club ‘Civil War:’ I don’t really know the ins and outs, and I don’t really care about that. I’m not looking to be bogged down with that stuff. All I care about is how best I can use the Bullet Club to benefit me. And if you look at any show in America right now, you see a sea of Bullet Club shirts.
When asked about his match against Will Ospreay on Night 1: I get my chance right away (grins). Anyway, he’s the champ, his speed and technique is awesome for sure. But there’s still a bit of sloppiness in there if you ask me. I think he’s still a bit green.

New Japan Pro Wrestling have announced that their upcoming Dominion event at Osaka-Jo is officially a sell out. The iconic building holds a capacity of around 13,500 (when taking into account the staging for a pro wrestling event).
This is the first time that New Japan has sold out the building for a Dominion show since moving from the Bodymaker Colosseum for the 2015 iteration of the event, the 2017 event drew a crowd of around 11,700.
It should come as no surprise to longtime NJPW fans that this event has sold out, with the blockbuster main event between IWGP Heavyweight Champion Kazuchika Okada and Kenny Omega being the fourth encounter between the two world class performers. The highly anticipated match will be contested with no time-limit and will be contested under a 2 out of 3 falls stipulation.
The show will be taking place on June 9th and will be available to watch live on NJPWWorld.com.

Ring of Honor have confirmed that injured former World Champion Jay Lethal will be making his way to the United Kingdom for the upcoming Honor United UK tour taking place on the following dates:
- May 24, 2018 — Edinburgh Corn Exchange, Edinburgh, Scotland, 7:30 p.m. local time
- May 26, 2018 — Crystal Palace Sports Centre, London, England, 6 p.m. local time
- May 27, 2018 — The Doncaster Dome, Doncaster, England, 6 p.m. local time
As we posted recently, Lethal suffered an injury while working a six-man tag match where EVIL, SANADA & Hiromu Takahashi defeated Kenny King, Colt Cabana & Lethal at May 12th’s War of the Worlds: Toronto in the main event of the show. It was reported that Lethal sustained the injury whilst hitting a sunset flip powerbomb to the floor and that he suffered from “memory issues” after the match. There were fears surrounding the performer’s condition with regards to a possible concussion and he was therefore removed from a planned fatal four way match against King, Matt Taven, and Marty Scurll in Royal Oak, Michigan as a precaution.
Ring of Honor posted the video below to Twitter where Lethal confirms his status for upcoming ROH events and the aforementioned Honor United UK tour.

PROGRESS has announced a huge bout for their upcoming Chapter 69 show which will be taking place Sunday 20th May from the Victoria Warehouse in Manchester, England. This will be the biggest UK based show that the company has ever produced outside of their spiritual home in London.
205 Live Superstar and former PROGRESS World Champion Mark Andrews will be facing New Japan Pro Wrestling’s Zack Sabre Jr. Both men are stalwarts of the UK independent wrestling scene and have branched out in a massive way internationally but in uniquely different ways. Andrews has been a featured performer on the aforementioned WWE Network show 205 Live and has also been involved in one of the more intriguing feuds on the UK scene against his former friend and tag team partner; Eddie Dennis.
Zack Sabre Jr himself has seen a huge leap in exposure ever since his move to New Japan Pro Wrestling, his inclusion in the successful Suzuki-Gun stable alongside Japanese legend Minoru Suzuki has seen him win the New Japan Cup and go on to face Kazuchika Okada in the main event of NJPW’s Sakura Genesis PPV show.

Ishii is only the second name announced for the two day Strong Style Evolved event, the first being IWGP World Heavyweight Champion Kazuchika Okada. Fans hoping to see the likes of Kenny Omega at the shows are sadly out of luck, he confirmed recently that he will not be heading to the UK for SSE. More names are expected to be announced for the shows in the coming weeks and we will update here on the site as soon as news becomes available.

DEFIANT Wrestling have announced two names for their upcoming ‘Built to Destroy’ PPV event, one a returning champion and the other one of the hottest tag teams currently on the UK independent scene.
IWGP Junior Heavyweight Champion Will Ospreay will be making his long awaited return to the company, his opponent has not yet been named. The ‘Aerial Assassin’ is due to perform in New Japan Pro Wrestling’s Best of the Super Juniors tournament from May 18th and you can catch his first round bout against Ishimori for free on NJPWWorld.com on night 1.
Aussie Open are the other confirmed name for the PPV, Comprising Kyle Fletcher and Mark Davis, Aussie Open are one of the most dynamic and exciting teams to emerge from the UK scene in the past year. Having first formed in the ATTACK! promotion back in August they have been challenging for titles in the likes of HOPE, Rev Pro, IPW:UK and CZW which is an absolute testament to their talent and ability to gel so quickly as a unit. Aussie Open have a strong big man/little man dynamic almost akin to that of an early Hart Foundation, the stacked Mark Davis provides a powerful hot tag whilst teammate Kyle Fletcher has an agile flair to his in ring approach, this team is certainly one to look out for.

As we reported recently former Smackdown Live Women’s Champion Charlotte Flair recently lost some teeth during a bout against Carmella on the WWE European Tour. The match in Oberhausen, Germany was abruptly ended via DQ when Carmella was disqualified for refusing the back off when the referee was breaking up her attack in the corner.
Charlotte has now updated fans on her condition following a return to the United States, she posted on her Instagram (as part of her Instagram Story) to confirm that she underwent dental work at Cosmetic Dentistry of the Carolinas near Charlotte, NC.
To add to Charlotte’s list of injuries she is also awaiting surgery to repair a ruptured breast implant, she sustained this before WrestleMania 34. Initially, she decided to hold off on the surgery because she wanted to work WrestleMania 34 against Asuka. When WWE decided to put the SmackDown Women’s Championship on Carmella, Charlotte was asked to work against Carmella at Backlash.
Charlotte had reportedly hoped to hold off on the surgery until after the lucrative European tour, however she has since returned home and will likely be under he knife sooner rather than later to be ready in time for Summerslam.

Welcome back to the UK Match of the Week. Now granted this isn’t quite the technical masterpiece that some of our other highlighted bouts have been but it certainly was a spectacle…we present James Ellsworth vs CZW Tournament of Death winner and arguably the best Deathmatch performer in the world: Jimmy Havoc.
Ever since his departure from WWE Ellsworth has been sporadically appearing on cards across the United States, including in a bout against Matt Riddle for Joey Janela’s Spring Break 2 during WrestleMania weekend this year.
This bout between Havoc and Ellsworth took place at IPW:UK’s ingeniously named ‘Chin Up Son’ event on May 2nd and was the first time that Ellsworth had appeared in the UK outside of WWE. Fans of the rising UK promotion instantly demanded that Havoc take on Ellsworth ever since the master of the ‘No Chin Music’ was announced. Havoc jokingly tweeted that he would “remove one of his hands” playing up Ellsworth’s “any man with two hands has a chance” catchphrase and the resulting bout has to be seen to be believed.
Check out the tweet below to find the match and let us know your thoughts in the comments.

WWE 205 Live superstar Hideo Itami posted a tribute to Kenta Kobashi marking the 5 Year Anniversary since his retirement from professional wrestling. The Japanese legend wrestled his final bout at Pro Wrestling NOAH’s Final Burning event in 2013 teaming alongside Jun Akiyama, Keiji Muto and Kensuke Sasaki to defeat Go Shiozaki, Maybach Taniguchi, Yoshinobu Kanemaru & Hideo Itami/KENTA himself.
Kobashi is widely regarded not just as one of the greatest performers in Japanese history but one of the greatest in the modern era worldwide. His accolades include a combined 977 days as AJPW World Tag Team Champion and combined 735 days as the GHC Heavyweight Champion.
If you have never had the opportunity to witness a Kobashi match then here are 3 of the best to check out to get you started:

WWE linked independent star Keith Lee posted a cryptic tweet following his appearance at Revolution Pro Wrestling’s (UK) Epic Encounter 2018 event last night. Lee faced NJPW star Tomohiro Ishii in the main event of the show for the British Heavyweight Championship, he lost the bout and left the ring to a standing ovation from the British fans.
Lee wrote “England….I sure hope there’s a next time” alluding to the rumors that he has in fact signed a contract with WWE and will be reporting to NXT and the Performance Center following his contracted independent dates this month, which include a bout against Minoru Suzuki at tonight’s OTT ScrapperMania IV show.
According to a report from the Wrestling Observer Newsletter back in March both Keith Lee and fellow Independent star WALTER were offered spots at the NXT Performance Center starting in May but at that time it was unknown if WALTER was going to accept the contract. Lee was however expected to accept WWE’s offer and it appears as though he may well be making the transition to WWE in the near future.

Japanese wrestling legend Minoru Suzuki will be facing current reigning IWGP Heavyweight Champion Kazuchika Okada for his upcoming 30th Anniversary match. Suzuki made the following comments during an interview with New Japan’s English language site NJPW1972.com:
“When we were putting this card together, this match was part of the conversation from the very start. The reason I wanted Okada was that he was born at the same time my career started, and right now he’s at the very top of the wrestling world. It’s really a dream match to show to so many people, all gathered for free under the blue Yokohama sky. He’s the best opponent I could think of to show everyone just what incredible things can happen in life. That’s what I kept in mind as we negotiated the match.”
The match will be part of the Great Pirate Festival, a two day free event on June 23rd and 24th at Yokohama’s Red Brick Warehouse and wrestling cards will be part of the presentation on both days. It has not been confirmed if the event will be shown on NJPWWorld.com however at this juncture it is unlikely to a live broadcast.
Suzuki has also been confirmed for the main event of day 2, where he will be teaming with Hikaru Sato to take on the team of NOSAWA Rongai & MASADA.

PROGRESS Wrestling have now officially announced that Jack Sexsmith will be challenging Travis Banks for the PROGRESS World Championship at Chapter 69 – ‘Be Here Now.’
The ‘Pansexual Phenomenon’ earned this opportunity way back at Chapter 59 in an 8-man contender match, he announced shortly after that he would be taking his Championship bout at Chapter 69 in front of PROGRESS’ biggest ever crowd outside of London. Sexsmith has been an inspirational figure for the UK scene and has become an almost ‘accidental’ champion of the LGBTQIA community, he heads into this bout as a huge fan favourite and will have the full backing of the PROGRESS fans to win his first World Championship.
Travis Banks enters the bout having gone undefeated since the ‘Chase The Sun’ event wherein he defeated Pete Dunne to become the PROGRESS World Champion. Banks has been receiving a fairly mixed reaction from the PROGRESS crowds lately, his winning defence against Matt Riddle seemed to solidify the fans turning against the ‘Kiwi Buzzsaw’ leading him to adopt Roman Reigns-esque mannerisms to ‘troll’ the PROGRESS faithful. The bout against Sexsmith became official after Banks defeated former ATLAS Champion WALTER at the Super Strong Style 16 event this past weekend.

UK based promotion RIPTIDE Wrestling has announced a huge David vs Goliath battle for their ‘International Waters’ event that takes place Friday July 6th from the Brighthelm Centre Auditorium in Brighton, England.

You may have seen WALTER’s name appear sporadically in the news recently, he has been heavily linked with a move to WWE/NXT in the near future alongside fellow independent star Keith Lee. Whilst Lee has reportedly signed a deal WALTER has continuously denied the rumours. If WALTER does indeed make his way to NXT he will be joining his former wXw colleague and Ringkampf stablemate Axel Dieter Jr.
Only one other match has been confirmed for ‘International Waters,’ CCK leader and former PROGRESS Tag Team Champion Chris Brookes will be taking on Naoki Tanizaki in what is sure to be a stellar technical affair.

PROGRESS Wrestling has announced that former TNA X-Division Champion and icon of British Independent wrestling Doug Williams will be appearing for “one more match” at Chapter 69 on May 20th from the Victoria Warehouse in Manchester, England. The show, dubbed ‘Be Here Now,’ references British band Oasis and is the biggest show to ever take place for the company outside of their London home.
Williams’ recent run in the company has been highlighted as a final throw of the dice for the past few chapter shows, his appearance at this past weekend’s Super Strong Style 16 tournament saw him lose out to WWE United Kingdom Champion Pete Dunne in the first round and he once again began debating if this was finally the end of the line for his career. PROGRESS has now confirmed that the British legend will indeed be returning and he has been added to the ATLAS division triple threat bout now making it a Fatal Four Way match between Rob Lynch, DEFIANT Champion Rampage Brown, WWE UK’s Joseph Conners and Williams. It is likely that the winner of this bout will go on to Wembley Arena on September 30th and challenge for the recently vacated ATLAS title, hopefully Williams can win this bout and secure his place in England’s biggest wrestling event for over 30+ years.

WWE United Kingdom roster member and former PROGRESS Wrestling Tag Team Champion Trent Seven will be challenging for the Over The Top (OTT) Wrestling Gender Neutral Championship this June.
The Moustache Mountain and British Strong Style stable member will be heading to Ireland’s Tivoli Theatre on June 2nd to face current reigning Champion LJ Cleary as well as Pro Wrestling: EVE’s Kris Wolf.
Seven is not the first WWE UK contracted performer to be linked to the newly established title…WWE United Kingdom Champion Pete Dunne was also locked in to challenge for the belt against then Champion ‘Session Moth’ Martina before a snowstorm across the UK cancelled OTT’s event that evening.
Whilst Seven is the veteran of this bout and the most well established internationally it is unlikely that the company will be taking the title off of LJ Cleary right now, his win against ‘Session Moth’ before her move to Japan’s Stardom promotion appeared to be the catalyst for a big run for the young star and looks set to continue over the next few months.

Will Ospreay’s Frontline Wrestling promotion has announced the next two bouts for their upcoming debut event ‘Build Me An Empire.’
The two newly confirmed matches are being billed as ‘Championship Contender’ bouts and will see DEFIANT Wrestling Champion Rampage Brown take on Rob Lynch and Naoki Tanizaki face former PROGRESS World Champion Mark Haskins in what promises to be a technical masterpiece.
Tanizaki is most known for this time as part of the Japanese Dragon Gate promotion, he has held the Open The Brave Gate Championship on one occasion (other notable Champions of the title include Matt Sydal, CIMA, WWE’s Neville, Ricochet, Akira Tozawa, Flamita and Dragon Kid) and the Open the Triangle Gate Championship (Trios Championship) Six times.
As we already announced on the site last month: Pro Wrestling NOAH and Japanese legend Kenoh will be facing one of the UK’s standout talents; Chris Ridgeway in the main event of the show. Ridgeway is one of the most hard hitting and impactful performers on the scene today and his style meshes perfectly with the ‘British Puro’ aesthetic that Frontine are looking to bring on their cards. Company owner Will Ospreay mentioned in an exclusive interview with SEScoops that he wanted to bring Strong Style to Great Britain in a way that was authentic to the Japanese wrestling culture but still highlighted some of the stellar talent that is being produced on UK shores.
