Day 1 of Best of the Super Juniors To Air Free on NJPW World

New Japan Pro Wrestling has announced that Day 1 of their upcoming Best of the Super Juniors (BOSJ) Tournament will be free to view on the NJPWWorld.com streaming service.

The first night will be taking place on May 18th from the world famous Korakuen Hall, the main event of that show will see IWGP Junior Heavyweight Champion Will Ospreay take on the newest member of the NJPW roster: Taiji Ishimori. Ishimori attacked Ospreay during his recent defence of his title against KUSHIDA, the former Pro Wrestling NOAH star was revealed as the new ‘Bone Solider’ character before laying out the Champion and now Ospreay has his chance at vengeance.

Other Round 1 matches scheduled for the first night are as follows:

  • YOH vs BUSHI

  • Flip Gordon vs ACH

  • Tiger Mask vs Yoshinobu Kanemaru

You can find more information on the tournament via NJPW1972.com or you can keep track of all the NJPW News as it happens right here on SEScoops.

Top NJPW Star Returns to PROGRESS Wrestling

PROGRESS Wrestling presented their Super Strong Style 16 tournament this past weekend and we have a ton of news coming out from the culmination of this historic weekender. Keep up with all of our daily coverage on the UK’s biggest promotion here.

One of the most shocking moments came on Monday night, the longest reigning PROGRESS World Champion Jimmy Havoc had just taken part in a hellacious Deathmatch with US star Joey Janela when his arch nemesis and IWGP Junior Heavyweight Champion Will Ospreay made his return to the company.

Ospreay stated that he had returned to PROGRESS to challenge Havoc, but he wanted the “sadistic, psychotic and twisted” version of the former World Champion at the Wembley Arena Supershow on September 30th and not (as he described) “a bloke called James.” Many fans in Alexandra Palace described this as one of the greatest moments in PROGRESS history and it will be available to view in full on PROGRESS’ On Demand service within a week.

Challenge Issued to WWE United Kingdom Champion Pete Dunne

WWE United Kingdom Champion and former PROGRESS World Champion Pete Dunne has been issued a challenge that will pit him against one of the more underrated stars of the European independent scene.

Promoter of Westside Xtreme Wrestling (wXw) Christian Michael Jakobi appeared during PROGRESS Wrestling’s Super Strong Style 16 event and challenged the reigning WWE UK Champion to a bout against the wXw World United Heavyweight Champion…Ilja Dragunov.

Dragunov became the wXw Champion during the company’s 16 Carat Gold 2018 event back in March of this year, he defeated then Champion John Klinger and WWE linked star WALTER in an incredible bout that headlined day two of the tournament. This marked the return of Dragunov to the company and he received a thunderous reception from the wXw fanbase.

The date of this European super bout has not yet been confirmed however the likelihood is that it will be one of the headliners during the co-branded PROGRESS/wXw tour which takes place late August/early September.

PROGRESS Super Strong Style 16 Winner Crowned

Arguably the biggest Independent wrestling company in the United Kingdom PROGRESS has crowned the winner of their highly prestigious Super Strong Style 16 tournament. The 2018 iteration of the tournament took place over three days at the world famous Alexandra Palace in London, England and featured some of the biggest names in Indie wrestling.

New Japan Pro Wrestling star and member of the Suzuki-Gun stable Zack Sabre Jr defeated NXT’s Kassius Ohno in the final of the tournament and elected to take his World Title shot at PROGRESS’ upcoming mega event in Wembley Arena.

Current reigning PROGRESS World Champion Travis Banks successfully defended his title on day 2 of the weekender against ATLAS Champion and WWE linked star WALTER. Whether Travis is able to make it to PROGRESS’ biggest ever show in Wembley as the Champion will be tested as WALTER vacated his ATLAS division belt to chase the more coveted PROGRESS World belt.

Title Matches Announced for ICW Fight Club 05/20

Insane Championship Wrestling (ICW) has announced the latest bouts for their upcoming Fight Club taping on May 20th from the Garage in Glasgow, Scotland.

In somewhat of a battle of the ‘belt collectors’ ICW Women’s Champion and inaugural Mae Young Classic competitor Viper/Piper Niven will be defending her title against Pro Wrestling: EVE Champion Sammii Jayne. These are two of the most decorated Champions on the UK scene and could steal the show on an impressive card.

ICW’s Zero-G Championship will also be on the line when new Champion Mark Coffey defends against an independent wrestling legend in M-Dogg Matt Cross. Coffey defeated longtime Champion BT Gunn at the recent Barramania show and he will not want to relinquish the strap anytime in the near future.

PROGRESS Co-Owner Releasing Book on Pro Wrestling History

PROGRESS Wrestling co-owner Jim Smallman has announced that his new book on the history of Pro Wrestling ‘I’m Sorry, I Love You’ is available to pre-order now.

Smallman has promised that the book will be a comprehensive look at Professional Wrestling from right back at the turn of the twentieth century all the way up to the modern day scene, this may well include some extra insights into PROGRESS itself but this has not yet been confirmed.

A short blurb has been released on the Amazon pre-order page:

“March 30th, 2008. The Citrus Bowl, Orlando. Wrestlemania XXIV. Ric Flair, the bleached blonde veteran, gets groggily to his feet. His opponent, Shawn ‘The Heartbreak Kid’ Michaels, knows what has to be done. Time stands still. Seventy-five thousand spectators lower their voices as a tearful Michaels locks eyes with his childhood hero, now fictional foe. ‘I’m sorry, I love you,’ he says, before delivering his signature ‘sweet chin music’ superkick, pinning Flair in the ring and ending his career on the grandest possible stage.

That moment is now part of wrestling folklore. To comedian and PROGRESS wrestling founder, Jim Smallman, Michaels’ words embody something else. For too long, fans like Jim have had to be apologetic about their love of professional wrestling. But all that’s about to change. Prepare for a wild ride through the history of pro-wrestling, from its beginnings at the turn of the twentieth century to the pop-culture, pay-per-view juggernaut that it is today. Part history, part love letter to a much-misunderstood form of entertainment, join Jim as he brings you tales of early pioneers like ‘Farmer’ Burns and Frank Gotch, bizarre gimmicks, phenomenal finishing moves, Mexican and Japanese innovators, the McMahon dynasty, Big Daddy, André the Giant, ‘Stone Cold’ Steve Austin, The Undertaker and The Rock, as he attempts to nail down just why this ludicrous, over the top, compelling quasi-sport means so much to so many.”

You can pre-order the book now via Amazon or the tweet below.

Brookes vs Tanizaki Announced for RIPTIDE ‘International Waters’ 07/06

UK based promotion RIPTIDE has announced the main event for their upcoming ‘International Waters’ event on July 6th from Brighton, England.

Leader of CCK (#CCK) Chris Brookes will be taking on Naoki Tanizaki, this will be Tanizaki’s debut match for the upstart UK company who continue to make waves on the hotly contested British scene.

Tanizaki is most known for this time as part of the Japanese Dragon Gate promotion, he has held the Open The Brave Gate Championship on one occasion (other notable Champions of the title include Matt Sydal, CIMA, WWE’s Neville, Ricochet, Akira Tozawa, Flamita and Dragon Kid) and the Open the Triangle Gate Championship (Trios Championship) Six times.

Chris Brookes is one of the most in demand stars on the UK circuit right now, his hugely successful run alongside Kid Lykos in #CCK has seen him catapulted into the ranks of PROGRESS wrestling’s main event scene and he is tipped as one of the favourites to win the Super Strong Style 16 tournament this weekend. Since Lyko’s most recent injury Brookes has once again been establishing himself as a legitimate singles star and this main event will only help build his profile as one of the nation’s best.

PROGRESS Super Strong Style 16 Bracket Revealed

PROGRESS has announced the full card for this weekend’s Super Strong Style 16 tournament. The three day event will be taking place at London’s Alexandra Palace and will feature some of the biggest names from the independent scene, both in the UK and abroad.

The matches are as follows:

  • Chris Brookes vs Kassius Ohno
  • Tyler Bate vs Jordan Devlin
  • Pete Dunne vs Doug Williams
  • Joey Janela vs One of the Grizzled Young Veterans
  • Angelico vs Mark Andrews
  • Keith Lee vs ‘Flash’ Morgan Webster
  • Chuck Mambo vs Zack Sabre Jr
  • TK Cooper vs David Starr

Opinion: As a fan of the UK scene this has to be one of the single greatest tournament line ups I have ever seen. I would quite happily put this up against any PWG BOLA show or even the inaugural WWE United Kingdom Championship field. There are some absolute barn burners in this first round, with some unexpected gems such as Pete Dunne vs Doug Williams pitting the present/future of wrestling against one of the country’s most beloved icons.

My guess is that Chris Brookes, ‘Flash’ Morgan Webster or Chuck Mambo will walk away on Monday night as the next Number 1 contender, but in all honesty almost anyone could win the tournament. Rumored WWE signee Keith Lee could easily be in the final against Kassius Ohno and take the shock win before he departs for the United States…so we will just have to wait and see.

Kazuchika Okada Announced for New Japan UK Tour

Current reigning New Japan Pro Wrestling IWGP Heavyweight Champion Kazuchika Okada has been announced for the upcoming ‘Strong Style Evolved’ NJPW/Rev Pro co-promoted shows.

Okada is the first officially confirmed name for the first Strong Style Evolved shows outside of the United States, the original event took place on March 25th from the Walter Pyramid in Long Beach, California. That show saw Will Ospreay defeat Japanese legend Jushin Thunder Liger as well as the hotly contested main event between the Golden Lovers (Kenny Omega and Kota Ibushi) and The Young Bucks.

The two-date UK event takes place on June 30th/July 1st from Milton Keynes and Manchester respectively. Tickets are available to purchase via the tweet below or Revolution Pro Wrestling’s official website.

PROGRESS Champion Travis Banks Reacts to Recent ‘Roman Reigns-esque’ Fan Reaction

PROGRESS Wrestling will be heading to Alexandra Palace this weekend for their biggest three day event of the year…Super Strong Style 16.

The event marks the one year anniversary of PROGRESS World Champion Travis Banks’ coronation and rise to the main event scene. The ‘Kiwi Buzzsaw’ has been a dominant reigning Champion since his win over WWE United Kingdom Champion Pete Dunne having avenged losses to Keith Lee and Matt Riddle. Banks also featured in arguably the best PROGRESS bout of 2017 when he defeated Will Ospreay as part of the Unboxing Live show in December, again to retain his title.

When Travis won the PROGRESS World Title it was seen as the dawning of a new era in England’s biggest Pro Wrestling company, the beloved babyface star had risen through the ranks after building his profile alongside TK Cooper as part of the South Pacific Power Trip…however the tide turned rather drastically at PROGRESS’ 64th chapter event ‘Thunderb*stards are Go!’ Banks defeated Matt Riddle to the anger of the PROGRESS faithful and since then he has begun to adopt more of a vicious streak in his matches and use tropes of WWE Superstar Roman Reigns to play up his new role in the company.

Banks recently reacted to a tweet sent out by the official PROGRESS Twitter account which recapped last year’s SSS16 event, you can check out the tongue in cheeks comments below:

ICW Announce Date for Fear & Loathing XI and Huge Debut for Shug’s Hoose Party

Insane Championship Wrestling (ICW) has announced the date for their next Fear & Loathing event. The 11th iteration of ICW’s biggest annual show will be taking place on December 2nd from the SSE Hydro in Glasgow, Scotland.

Fear & Loathing is the ‘Wrestlemania’ in ICW’s calendar year, previous events have seen the likes of Finn Balor, Kurt Angle and Mick Foley appear and the SSE Hydro in Glasgow can hold a capacity of around 2,500 to 3,000 fans. Last year’s event also featured Rey Mysterio taking on Kenny Williams and Rob Van Dam facing Lionheart.

Tickets for Fear & Loathing XI will be available to purchase via the official ICW site as of Friday May 4th.

https://twitter.com/InsaneChampWres/status/990661960294379526

Shug’s Hoose Party will be taking place in July and a massive name has been announced to debut on Night 1. WWE linked star and PROGRESS ATLAS Champion WALTER will be making his way to Scotland’s biggest promotion, his opponent for the show has not yet been named.

If you’ve never heard of WALTER then he is certainly a performer that should be on your radar. The Austrian powerhouse has been dominating the Tag and Heavyweight divisions in wXw, PROGRESS and PWG over the past couple of years and he is now being slated as a future WWE/NXT signee (even if he denies any sort of negotiations). The de-facto leader of the Ringkampf stable (alongside Timothy Thatcher and previously NXT roster member Axel Dieter Jr) has a ton of potential on the world stage and has already garnered critical praise from the likes of Dave Meltzer, who gave his PWG All-Star Weekend bout against Zack Sabre Jr from October 2017 a 5 star rating.

WWE Returning To Saudi Arabia in November

It appears as though last night’s Greatest Royal Rumble event will not be the last WWE show held in Saudi Arabia in 2018.

Uncensored Wrestling confirmed on Twitter that Turki Al-Sheikh announced another major WWE event will be held in the Saudi Arabian capital city of Riyadh in November. No further information has yet been released on the show, whether this could be another special live feature for the WWE Network is yet to be determined but with the success of the Greatest Royal Rumble and the global buzz that WWE has generated from the show it is definitely not out of the realms of possibility.

Last night’s Greatest Royal Rumble event also stirred up some controversy, most notably the fact that no Women’s division performers were permitted on the show. Early on in the broadcast WWE played a video promoting the culture change that Saudi Arabia had been experiencing over the past few years, including the fact that Women were now permitted to drive in Saudi Arabia.

Former Women’s Champion Sasha Banks appeared to be unimpressed with the segment, she tweeted “I’m so inspired” during the event. Whilst this is a cleverly worded tweet it could easily be seen as a sarcastic jab, check out her comments below and let us know what you think in the comments.

Titus O’Neil Reacts to Greatest Royal Rumble Botch

Last night’s Greatest Royal Rumble event from Saudi Arabia was historic for many reasons…Daniel Bryan broke the record for longest time ever spent in a Rumble match at over 1 hour and 5 minutes and Braun Strowman eliminated 13 men, the most ever in a Rumble match.

But one of the most talked about moments from last night’s event came from one of the most unlikely circumstances. If you watched the show then you almost certainly know that I am referring to THAT Titus O’Neil botch.

For those who are unaware Titus had an unfortunate stumble whilst entering the first ever 50 man iteration of the Rumble match, the production crew appeared to cover the botch well with a quick camera change to the ring before again focusing on Titus recovering from under the ring apron. Vince McMahon reportedly found the situation “hilarious” and decided to focus on the botch with multiple replays.

Titus has now taken to Twitter to react to the unfortunate slip and it appears as though he is going to use this opportunity to get those checks “right into the bank.”

Check out Titus’ reaction below and tell us if you think he tripped intentionally in the comments.

WWE Reveals UK Championship Tournament Poster feat Night 1 Main Event

WWE has released the official poster for the upcoming United Kingdom Championship tournament which takes place June 18th and 19th from the world famous Royal Albert Hall in London, England. WWE announced earlier this month that several NXT Superstars would be making their way across the pond for these very special two nights and now the official poster has been revealed…

The main event of Night 1: British Strong Style vs Undisputed Era is the featured match and the poster shows WWE United Kingdom Champion Pete Dunne alongside Trent Seven, Tyler Bate, NXT North American Champion Adam Cole, Kyle O’Reilly and Roderick Strong. This huge 6 man tag team bout materialised during NXT Takeover: New Orleans from this past Wrestlemania weekend. Pete Dunne was paired with Roderick Strong in the finals of the Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic and Strong turned on his partner to align himself with the former Ring of Honor stars and become the newest member of the Undisputed Era. This will also be the first official bout for the British Strong Style stable under the WWE banner when Tyler Bate, Trent Seven and Pete Dunne head to the Royal Albert Hall as a unit.

UK Wrestling Scene Responds to World of Sport Returning

The UK wrestling scene was hit with the news earlier this week that World of Sport would officially be returning for a 10-part series. The tapings for these shows are scheduled to take place May 10th/11th/12th from EPIC Studios in Norwich, England.

Several of the UK’s top stars have reacted to the news that ITV are bringing back the once hugely popular series. IWGP Junior Heavyweight Champion Will Ospreay asked Wouldn’t it be interesting if they could Elevate the product and show the nation the true evolution of British Wrestling. Wonder how or better yet who could do that…???”

Several names have already been rumored regarding the potential stars that will be making their way to the new ITV show, including the first ever PROGRESS Champion Nathan Cruz, El Ligero, Mark Haskins and Alex Cupid. One name that likely will not be returning to the series is Zack Gibson, who recently appeared as part of WWE’s Wrestlemania Axxess shows and is slated to be signing with the WWE UK roster at some point in the near future. Gibson did appear on the one-off New Year’s Eve special that aired back in 2016 in a match against El Ligero.

WWE Linked Star Challenging for the wXw Championship

Westwide Xtreme Wrestling (wXw) has announced that PROGRESS ATLAS Champion and member of the Ringkampf stable WALTER will be challenging Ilja Dragunov for the wXw Unified World Championship in the main event of Superstars of Wrestling on May 5th.

This announcement just adds extra spice to an already impressive card featuring the likes of Tenille Dashwood challenging Toni Storm for the wXw Women’s Championship and ROH legend Christopher Daniels taking on Bobby Guns for the wXw Shotgun Title. WWE legend Billy Gunn, former ROH World Champion Jay Lethal and 16 Carat Gold winner Absolute Andy will also be in action.

Less than 10 tickets remain for this incredibly stacked card which takes place in Turbinenhalle, Oberhausen next weekend. You can watch the show later that week via the wXw Now On Demand service, further information can be found via the tweet below or through wXw’s official website.

Kota Ibushi Talks Bullet Club, Cody Rhodes and more

3 time IWGP Junior Heavyweight and former 1 time IWGP Junior Tag Team Champion Kota Ibushi recently spoke to Tokyo Sports in Japan to discuss a variety of topics surrounding the Bullet Club, his role in New Japan Pro Wrestling, Cody Rhodes and more.

Ibushi has become embroiled in a Bullet Club ‘civil war’ alongside his ‘Golden Lovers’ tag team partner Kenny Omega. The pair have been feuding against Cody Rhodes, Hangman Page and at times The Young Bucks. When discussing the storyline Kota stated: “I don’t know why the Bullet Club members have to fight each other. I want it to end. It doesn’t interest me at all, I just don’t want to be caught up in it anymore.”

Ibushi also went on to say that he does not “want to bring backstage drama into the ring. I want to wrestle in the ring, and have the stories develop and amaze people there and there alone. Even as I tag (in the Golden Lovers) I want to make a mark, show results on my own. Ibushi also commented on the man who calls himself the defacto leader of the Bullet Club; Cody Rhodes. “I liked my match with Cody (at Wrestle Kingdom). I like him as a wrestler; to just have a normal match, I’m looking forward to it. Win or lose, I want this to be the end of all this, put it behind us and move on.”

Spoiler: PWG All-Star Weekend Main Event Result

Former PWG Champion Keith Lee has taken to Twitter to offer his congratulations to the man who dethroned him at this past weekend’s All-Star Weekend.

It is being described as an enthralling main event between three of the top independent performers in the world. wXw and PROGRESS star WALTER defeated both Keith Lee and Jonah Rock to become the PWG Champion for the very first time. Lee made the following comments on Twitter following his loss: “*sigh* ….do it right. Do it with passion. Do it with pride. But most importantly….do it BIG.”

The man who asks you to “bask in his glory” also made the following statement regarding the company and their fans: “Just wanted to start this morning off with an enormous thank you to and its fans. I love you. All of you.”

Whilst this is in no way an indication that he will be leaving the independent scene for a run in WWE/NXT the title loss and this message certainly come at an intriguing time. Lee and interestingly WALTER have both been linked with WWE in the past few months and both appeared at the Axxess shows over Wrestlemania weekend.

You can see the report from earlier this year linking the two men with WWE here.

WWE Legend Confirms His Status for World of Sport Tapings

WWE Hall of Famer and Commentating Legend Jim Ross has confirmed his status for the upcoming World of Sport tapings taking place on May 10th/11th/12th from Norwich’s EPIC Studios in the UK.

As we reported previously; World of Sport Wrestling has scheduled a series of TV Tapings for mid-May. The promotion previously announced television taping dates for May of 2017 as well but abruptly canceled them a few weeks ahead of time. At the time, talent and fans were told the decision had been made to postpone the project.

JR was a major part of the original ‘reboot’ special that aired as part of ITV’s New Year’s Eve offering in 2016 working as the play by play commentator…but it looks as though his involvement in the project has now come to an end. Ross tweeted earlier today (available at the bottom of this page) to confirm that he will not be taking part in the tapings which are slated for the following dates:

  • Thursday, May 10th, 630PM
  • Friday, May 11th, 2pm & 630pm
  • Saturday, May 12th, 2pm & 630pm

World of Sport have not confirmed which on air talents will be taking part in the new tapings, several performers from the original ‘reboot’ episode are now heavily linked with moves to WWE, including PROGRESS Wresting Tag Team Champion Zack Gibson.

Attendance for these events is free and you can apply for tickets here.
