Bruce Prichard Denies Chaotic WWE Production Under Vince McMahon

Key Points

  • WWE’s Executive Director says reports of last-minute script rewrites and backstage chaos are incorrect
  • Unforeseen circumstances like injuries or timing issues are a normal part of live weekly television and says he’s done far more rewrites than Vince

The production of WWE broadcasts is very different today than it was just a year ago. The departures of Vince McMahon and Kevin Dunn have led to a complete overhaul of the product’s on-screen presentation that is universally praised. Aside from what we see on WWE Raw and WWE Smackdown each week, wrestling fans have an insatiable interest in what’s going on behind the scenes.

During the final years of Vince McMahon’s role as the head of WWE creative, there were a never-ending string of reports about last-minute changes to television scripts. Even McMahon would be unable to attend in-person, he’d micromanage from afar and we’d also hear about a chaotic environment. One of the most influential figures in WWE, Bruce Prichard, recently shed light on this topic. On a recent episode of his Something to Wrestle podcast with Conrad Thompson at AdFreeShows, WWE Executive Director Bruce Prichard offered his unique insights into the day-to-day operations of WWE.

When Vince Wasn’t There

Prichard scoffed at the idea that things were chaotic when McMahon missed shows. The former Brother Love emphasizes that the backstage environment remained stable and well-organized, a credit to their very-capable team.

“Everybody knows their jobs, and can function and do it… You take away one piece and everybody fills in, does their job, and covers whoever is gone as well.”

– Bruce Prichard on the WWE backstage environment when Vince McMahon would be unable to attend shows

Setting The Record Straight on Last-Minute Rewrites

Prichard noted that there were fewer changes when McMahon was not physically present at the shows, though McMahon remained in contact via phone. Prichard remarked, “There was a need, maybe in his mind, to… make it better. Now, that’s all relative, and that’s all personal feeling.” This suggests that McMahon’s influence continued even from afar, but the operational integrity of the team allowed for smooth show executions.

Prichard also debunked the myth of constant show rewrites, clarifying that he, not McMahon, often managed last-minute changes due to unforeseen circumstances like injuries or timing issues.

“I probably have done it more in a year than Vince McMahon has in a lifetime.”

– Bruce Prichard on the perception that Vince McMahon would tear-up scripts he wasn’t happy with

The departure of Vince McMahon marked a monumental shift in WWE’s history. However, with seasoned executives like Bruce Prichard and Paul Levesque still in key positions following the TKO Group acquisition and UFC merger, the company continues to adapt and thrive under new leadership.

Tonga Twins Spotted At WWE Performance Center

Wrestling fans are buzzing about the Tonga Twins, Kaoz and Kona, visiting the WWE Performance Center in Orlando, Florida, on Wednesday. The twin sisters, formerly known as The MK Twins, wrestled a few dates for AEW in 2021 and later for WOW, where they held the tag team championships. That relationship came to an abrupt end earlier this year, with each side airing their grievances online.

For now this should not be considered anything more than a visit to the Performance Center. We’ll look into whether or not they’re receiving a tryout and will provide an update if we hear anything.

WWE has strong women’s tag divisions on Raw, SmackDown and NXT you can never have too many talented teams to create fresh match-ups that showcase each duo’s skills.

Who are the Tonga Twins?

The Tonga Twins, Kaoz and Kona, made their pro wrestling debut in 2021. They’re wrestled for All Elite Wrestling (AEW) and Women of Wrestling (WOW).

Will the Tonga Twins join WWE? It’s interesting to note they’ve been re-tweeting messages from WWE fans stating that Nia Jax should bring them in as her ‘backup.’ It’s not the worst idea we’ve heard today.

What Happened Last Week on WWE NXT?

Here are the Top 10 Moments from the July 9, 2024 episode of WWE NXT:

WWE Champion Cody Rhodes Discusses Title Reign and Shares Candid Thoughts on AEW

Undisputed WWE Champion Cody Rhodes recently sat down with Chris Van Vliet to discuss a wide range of topics, including life after ‘finishing his story’ at WrestleMania 40, what The Rock gave him the following night on WWE Raw, if he’s ever tempted to return to the dark side and portray a villain character, his time in AEW and more. Here are the highlights:

His Time With AEW

CVV: Through all of this over the last few years, you’ve never said anything bad about AEW and you’ve never said anything bad about your time in AEW.”

Cody: “Yeah. You want to change it? Say something bad?”

CVV: “Well, you know, why have you taken the high road?”

Cody: “Yeah, I don’t know if I consider it the high road, but maybe it is. How could I not, right?”

The American Nightmare was a driving force behind the genesis of All Elite Wrestling. His abrupt departure from AEW and WWE return have completely altered the landscape of the industry. Rhodes obviously left AEW because he felt it was no longer the right place for him and where he wanted to take his career, but you still won’t hear him taking any pot shots at his former home.

“How AEW ended was terrible, really, and people are going to write books later on, and these stories are going to get out there, and then it’s going to be a whole new ballgame. But the actual experience and everything we did, I mean..

You ever seen the end of The Dark Knight? I think that’s, again, it’s super convoluted and I’m not comparing myself to Batman, but there’s a piece of it that’s really important. To certain fans from the AEW fandom, they need the story to be, they didn’t want me, they pushed me out. They need, he was bad. “They need that story.. They need me to be the villain. I was always fine with accepting that because of the respect I have for it in the first place.”

Nothing But Love for AEW

Breakups can be extremely painful, but Rhodes has thankfully arrived at a place of acceptance and gratitude regarding his time with AEW. He was “all in” while he was there, and at this stage of his life, he can look back and say that All Elite Wrestling was a chapter in his story and he’s content with that.

“So regardless of any petty squabbles, I will always have a love for [AEW]. I got to wrestle Brodie Lee’s final match. I got to lead people, young people behind the scenes. I’ll always have a love for it. So the idea that I’m sure there’s some negative stuff, like, oh, this sucked or what, but I just don’t, I just remember it lovingly.

WWE Was The End Game

Rhodes likens his time with AEW to Hulk Hogan’s run in the AWA (1981-1983). Hulkamania was popularized in the World Wrestling Federation, but it was born in the American Wrestling Association.

“I also knew I was leaving. I knew it was a season. I knew this isn’t going to last, and there’s something greater for me out there. I know that might sound negative to people, but it’s not. I think [the Undisputed WWE Championship] is the biggest prize in the wrestling game. If you put on boots, that’s the one, and I just wanted to go get it.

“I had nothing but respect for my time there. I got to sharpen my skills. You know, like Hulkamania and the AWA, right before it came to WWE, it’s the same, like the energy was there. The renaissance was happening. It was all there and I just have love.”

The night he won the WWE Championship:

CVV: “What happened that night after you won that?”

Cody: “I didn’t sleep.”

Cody Rhodes’ emotions were understandably running high the night he fulfilled his destiny and won the WWE Championship to honor his father’s legacy. Rhodes says he laid on a bed and texted a bunch of people, including The Undertaker. As he laid there taking it all in, he couldn’t help but wonder, ‘what next?’

“I thought, I was almost worried there’d be the sense of completion, the sense of fullness. I was genuinely concerned like, well, story’s over. But as soon as it was done, it felt like, oh, like literally felt 10 feet tall, felt bulletproof, felt younger, felt faster, like just didn’t feel grizzled at all to the point where I thought, oh, this is gonna be a lot of fun, but what do we do next?”

– Cody Rhodes

Unfamiliar Territory

Cody Rhodes firmly established winning the WWE Championship as his ‘top of the mountain’ and the final chapter of his ‘story.’ However, as Triple H has said, WWE’s story never ends. Cody doesn’t get the ride off into the sunset with the title over his shoulder. The hunter has become the hunted. The brash hero is now the targeted of other challengers hoping to step over him to finish their own stories.

Rhodes has enjoyed tearing it up with the likes of AJ Styles and Logan Paul in sold-out venues across the world, but he’s still getting used to playing ‘defense.’

“Well, I mean, so I think it’s an adjustment right now for going from finishing the story to these big marquee title matches. I was particularly happy with AJ, the match with AJ in France and the match with Logan in Saudi, just because I really wanted to set a different standard for title matches, the actual matches.

But then again, there’s also Friday Night SmackDown and Monday Night Raw with the stories and the fun.I was always in the thick of it. So we’re kind of adjusting to now everyone’s coming for you. You’re not chasing, you’re not cutting these passionate interviews and promos about what you want. You’re on the defensive. And that’s very new for me.”

“Wyatt Sicks” VHS promo: A distraught and emotional Erick Rowan reflects on losing his wrestling “family” in a new VHS tape segment. He describes falling into despair after losing two “brothers” and feeling lost. Uncle Howdy is portrayed as Rowan’s savior, giving him new purpose through the mask and a mission to help others like himself.

Jey Uso vs. Dominik Mysterio: Jey Uso wins the match, but the focus is on the drama surrounding it. Liv Morgan interferes to help Dominik, leading to a compromising position with Jey. Rhea Ripley appears to scare Morgan away but ends up taking a spear. Backstage, Ripley reasserts her dominance over Dominik, forgiving him but reminding him that he belongs to her.

Chad Gable’s trap for Bo Dallas: Gable calls out Bo Dallas, claiming he’s solved the mystery of Uncle Howdy’s identity. When Dallas appears, the Creed Brothers ambush him. However, the plan backfires as Dallas laughs, signaling the arrival of the other Wyatt Sicks members. Gable and the Creeds retreat, leaving the Wyatt Sicks to unite in the ring.

Intercontinental Championship match: Sami Zayn defends against Ilja Dragunov, but the match ends in no contest due to Bron Breakker’s interference. Breakker attacks both competitors, closing the show with this chaotic scene.

Wyatt Sicks Hack Into The Pat McAfee Show Ahead of July 15 WWE Raw

WWE’s Wyatt Sicks faction hacked into Pat McAfee’s The Pat McAfee Show on ESPN on Monday ahead of tonight’s 7/15 WWE Raw. This clip of the group’s latest psychological warfare towards McAfee sets the stage for what’s to come in a matter of hours on live on the USA Network.

The Wyatt Sicks have had everyone in WWE on edge since their violent debut on the June 17, 2024 edition of WWE Raw. The faction has been leaving mysterious VHS tapes at various locations, including the announce desk and Pat McAfee’s show, containing cryptic messages and featuring Bo Dallas and Uncle Howdy. Bo Dallas’ recent invasion of Raw General Manager Adam Pearce’s office on a recent RAW episode shows that nobody is safe.

Pat McAfee appears to be a primary target of the Wyatt Sicks, with multiple incidents of interruptions and cryptic messages directed at him. McAfee should be in a great mood for tonight’s WWE Raw as fans wait to see how the Wyatt Sicks follow through on their taunts.

Pat McAfee’s Message to WWE

WWE Raw announcer Pat McAfee unusually addressed WWE in a public message on X.

A fearful McAfee wrote, “Hey WWE, I’ll be bringing this [Wyatt Sicks] box tonight to WWE Raw. Could you please let the Wyatt’s know that I am a massive fan and I believe Michael Cole would be a much better handler of the box… and also let them know that it has been an ABSOLUTE HONOR to transfer it a couple of times now but, it’s very ok for me not to. CAN’T WAIT FOR TONIGHT”

Wyatt Sicks Drop New Coded Message Before WWE Raw

WWE’s Wyatt Sicks faction dropped their latest cryptic message on social media Sunday afternoon. The message contains an image of someone holding a sheep mask and the word “hope” along with a string of two and three-digit numbers.

The seemingly-random series of numbers contains a hidden message in ASCII format. By pasting the numbers into an ASCII to text converter tool, it reveals the phrase:

“Hope is the last thing ever lost.”

– Wyatt Sicks’ latest message

The Wyatt Sicks has maintained an eerie presence since their violent debut last month. While they haven’t competed in any matches yet, they’ve had the entire WWE roster looking over their shoulders. Their next VHS tape is expected to be featured on the July 15th episode of WWE RAW and will focus on Erick Rowan.

This marks a departure from their previous VHS tapes, which have featured interviews between Bo Dallas and Uncle Howdy. Rowan, a disciple of Bray Wyatt, has been wearing a rabbit mask, reminiscent of the Rambling Rabbit character from the Firefly Funhouse.

MJF Trolls England’s Euro 2024 Final Loss

MJF mocked England’s heartbreaking loss to Spain in Sunday’s UEFA EURO 2024 championship game.

The former AEW World Champion battles Will Ospreay for the International Championship this Wednesday on the 250th episode of AEW Dynamite. MJF is back in full-blown heel mode, and mocking English football fans after this loss to taunt Ospreay may be a new low for him.

Ospreay joined his countrymen in showing his support for England on social media.

After England’s defeat, MJF couldn’t help but use it as an opportunity to play mind games with the disappointed champion. He says Englishmen “can’t win when put under pressure” and simply aren’t equipped to be athletes. He and Ospreay have been exchanging personal attacks for several weeks, but this latest insult shows that Friedman will stop at nothing to antagonize his opponents.

Wednesday’s AEW Dynamite 250th episode celebration will feature Will Ospreay vs. MJF, Swerve Strickland vs. Kazuchika Okada, Mercedes Mone vs. Nyla Rose and fallout from Mariah May’s attack on Toni Storm at the end of last week.

Nightingale defeated Viva Van and Lluvia in a 3-way match for the vacant title. The former champion was Stephanie Vaquer, who has since departed CMLL/NJPW and signed with WWE. Vaquer made her WWE debut Saturday night from Mexico City.

Nightingale has held the NJPW Strong Women’s Champion, AEW TBS Champion and won the 2023 Women’s Owen Hart Cup Tournament. She’s wrestled in Mexico for CMLL several times this year, including a victory in a 3-on-3 match back in March 2024 over a team that included Stephanie Vaquer, Lluvia and Zeuxis.

Jim Ross Recovering From Wrist Surgery

Legendary wrestling announcer Jim Ross underwent another surgery this week. The 72-year-old from Norman, Oklahoma announced on Saturday that he’d undergone successful wrist surgery.

Ross has battled a series of health issues in recent years, which he’s documented in gory detail on social media. He was recently admitted to the emergency room with difficulty breathing, but went on to call some of the action at the AEW x NJPW: Forbidden Door pay-per-view.

In addition to his work with AEW, Ross hosts the popular Grilling JR podcast.

SEScoops wishes Jim Ross a speedy recovery and good health.

QT Marshall Wins Bodybuilding Competition at 2024 Atlanta Classic

QT Marshall won a bodybuilding competition on Saturday in Atlanta, GA. The AEW executive announced on social media that he won first place in a ‘classic physique’ event at the 2024 NPC Lenda Murray Atlanta Classic, presented by Wings of Strength.

Marshall has kept an active in-ring schedule this year, competing in Calgary, Alberta, Canada this past week for Ring of Honor and at last month’s AAA TripleMania XXXII pay-per-view from Tijuana, Mexico. He’s the reigning Heavyweight Champion of Florida’s Coastal Championship Wrestling.

Pro Wrestling & Bodybuilding

Pro wrestling and bodybuilding share a deep-rooted connection, as impressive physiques have been a selling point of the sport since its inception. This natural synergy has led many promoters and wrestlers to embrace bodybuilding, often competing in prestigious competitions and starting bodybuilding federations. Triple H, for instance, began competing in bodybuilding competitions as a teenager. John Cena’s eye-popping physique has been a hallmark of his wrestling persona, earning him features in various bodybuilding and fitness magazines. Trish Stratus transitioned from a successful career as a fitness model to becoming one of WWE’s most celebrated wrestlers.

Alexa Bliss’s journey is particularly inspiring, as she credits bodybuilding with helping her overcome an eating disorder. Her dedication to the sport led her to compete in the Arnold Classic and become a certified pro bodybuilder by the age of 20. Bianca Belair and Montez Ford have both competed in bodybuilding in recent years, showcasing their dedication to maintaining peak physical condition. In November 2023, Montez Ford announced he’d overcome body dysmorphia to win his first bodybuilding competition.

Bodybuilding requires incredible discipline, strength, and determination, but it’s even more impressive for the pro wrestlers who have dabbled in bodybuilding and excelled at the highest level in a sport that demands much more than just looking good on stage. Their ability to combine the physical rigor of bodybuilding with the athleticism, charisma, and performance skills required in pro wrestling that truly sets them apart.

Tony Khan On What It Would Take For A Women’s Blood & Guts Match in AEW

Blood & Guts is one of the most dangerous stipulation matches in professional wrestling. It’s AEW’s take on War Games, the double-cage, anything-goes team warfare match originated by the late ‘American Dream’ Dusty Rhodes in the 1980’s.

AEW introduced Blood & Guts in 2021, and has run the match each year ever since on a special-themed edition of AEW Dynamite. The match returns this year on Wednesday, July 24 from Nashville, TN. AEW Blood & Guts 2024 will feature Team Elite against Team AEW.

The first four Blood & Guts matches have featured only men, but is there a specific reason for this? Tony Khan appeared on the Battleground Podcast this week and said there’s no policy preventing a Women’s Blood & Guts match. In fact, he thinks it’s a great under as long as there’s a good story to support it.

“At some point, it would be great to have a women’s Blood & Guts match,” said Khan. “I think you need a lot of people [involved with] the story, and a lot of healthy people,” Khan said. “We have a great roster that we’re building up, and I think our women’s roster is stronger than it’s ever been right now today and I’m really excited about that. So, if we ever get to the point where we’ve got enough people tied together and the story makes sense, I think it would be great.”

5th Time’s A Charm?

There has never been a Women’s Blood and Guts match. Blood & Guts 2024 will feature two teams of male competitors, just like the first three.

  • The inaugural Blood & Guts match (The Inner Circle vs. The Pinnacle) took place on May 5, 2021, after being delayed from its original March 2020 date due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
  • The second Blood & Guts match (Jericho Appreciation Society vs. Blackpool Combat Club, Eddie Kingston, Santana, and Ortiz) occurred in June 2022.
  • The third and most recent Blood & Guts match (The Golden Elite vs. Blackpool Combat Club, Konosuke Takeshita, and Pac) was held on July 19, 2023, at the TD Garden in Boston, Massachusetts.

Several women on the AEW roster have expressed interest in participating, including Willow Nightingale and Skye Blue. WWE regularly features women’s Money in the Bank and WarGames matches. As we saw at the conclusion of this week’s AEW Dynamite, they’re not exactly preventing the women from getting as bloody and violent as the men. The question of a Women’s Blood & Guts match is about when it will happen, not if it will happen.

Plus, Samoa Joe is advertised to appear.

What Happened Last Week on AEW Dynamite?

The show featured several Owen Hart Foundation Tournament matches, including Bryan Danielson defeating PAC in a semifinal bout. Willow Nightingale advanced to the women’s finals by beating Kris Statlander. In a surprising twist, “Hangman” Adam Page returned as the Young Bucks’ Wild Card pick, defeating Jeff Jarrett to end Double J’s dream of honoring his former partner.

The main event saw AEW International Champion Will Ospreay successfully defend his title against Daniel Garcia in a highly competitive match. The closing segment ended in dramatic fashion with a ‘swerve’ that we probably should have seen coming. After Garcia’s loss, MJF revealed his true colors by attacking him brutally. MJF used his Dynamite Diamond Ring to assault Garcia, leaving him bloodied and injured. The show ended with Garcia being stretchered out while Will Ospreay looked on with concern.

This shocking turn of events sets up potential storylines involving MJF, Garcia, and possibly Ospreay moving forward. Additionally, the episode featured appearances by other champions, including TBS and NJPW STRONG Women’s Champion Mercedes Moné, who had a heated confrontation with the returning Britt Baker.

7/3/24 AEW Video Recap

The AEW YouTube channel posted this video of recap of the show:

Rhea Ripley Returns & Liv Morgan Flees, What Happened After WWE Raw

In a dramatic conclusion to Monday’s WWE RAW, Rhea Ripley made her long-awaited return, bringing the simmering tension between herself, Dominik Mysterio, and Liv Morgan to a boiling point. The climax of the evening saw Liv Morgan and Dominik Mysterio team up against Rey Mysterio and Zelina Vega, which ended in their victory. As the duo celebrated their win with a passionate embrace in the ring, Rhea Ripley’s music hit and the arena erupted.

Mami made her way to the ring and business picked up in a big way. Morgan, seemingly aware of the impending confrontation, quickly fled the scene, leaving Dominik alone in the ring. The tension was palpable as Ripley approached Mysterio.

Her demeanor was far from welcoming, a stark contrast to the celebratory mood moments earlier. When Dominik attempted to greet her with a hug, Ripley’s cold response spoke volumes. As RAW went off the air, fans were left with the image of a clearly displeased Ripley.

What Happened After Raw

The USA Network feed cut off early, but we can see here just how displeased Ripley was.

What’s Next?

Expect to see Rhea Ripley vs. Liv Morgan at SummerSlam, one of our five WWE SummerSlam 2024 card predictions. This dramatic return sets the stage for what promises to be an explosive summer ahead as the next chapters in this ongoing saga are written. We’re now wondering:

  • How will Ripley address Dominik’s closeness with Morgan?
  • What are Morgan’s true intentions?
  • Where do Dominik’s loyalties truly lie?
