MAILBAG: Are You For Or Against The Rock Being WWE Champion?

SEScoops Mailbag for March 29th

(please submit YOUR questions to sescoops@gmail.com) or follow @solomonster on Twitter and submit them that way!

Q: Last week on the Sound Off [podcast], you talked about the Booker vs. Triple H match at WrestleMania 19 and said that he squashed him, with no rematch. I found on YouTube though that they had a rematch on Raw with HBK as the special referee. It ended in some kind of no contest after Jericho and Nash interfered. As someone who didn’t watch WWE during Triple H’s “reign of terror”, I’m curious to what extent you think it really took away from the product and frustrated you that he kept putting himself over? – Draven

A: Was that the match where the bell never rang to signal the end of the contest? How can I forget that? Technically, that match is still in progress, making it the longest match in history. It was incredibly frustrating (and boring, quite frankly) to see Triple H put himself over at the expense of others on a weekly basis. The things he would do, and say on promos, did his opponents no favors. This differs greatly from the way his idol, Ric Flair, did business in the midst of his NWA title runs. You could argue that his being champion for so long made the title mean more, and that may be so, but during his 434 days reign as champion, I never felt that CM Punk did anything to make his opponents look inferior the way that Triple H did.

Q: I’m not against Rock being around, but I am against him being the WWE Champion. For me, the title still means something and it should only be held by guys who will be around the whole year. I find it ridiculous that The Rock can’t even take 10 seconds on his media rounds to say that he’s wrestling, he’s the WWE Champion or even mention his upcoming title defense vs Cena at WrestleMania. I was hesitant at first, but thought it might end up good for WWE if Rocky gave them some publicity heading into Mania. Do you think Rock hasn’t done his job as WWE Champion? – Justin from Puerto Rico

A: WWE wanted him to be champion. He could have told them to go piss off, but he agreed to it. He’s doing just fine. I would have preferred they at least tape something with him to air during one of those two weeks of Raw that he missed, but that’s WWE’s fault for not thinking of it. I was quite suspect of Rock going on The Tonight Show and not saying a word about WrestleMania or being the champion, but since then, he’s talked wrestling on “Live with Kelly and Michael” and devoted an entire segment to it on Jimmy Kimmel’s show. Rock is doing his job just fine. Believe me, WWE will be more than happy once they tally up this year’s box office for Mania.

Q: I’m pretty sure [Daniel Bryan] and Kane are breaking up soon after WrestleMania. Do you think [Bryan] will be in the main event scene, or will he be placed in a mid-card comedy program with Santino or Hornswoggle? Also, do think he’ll turn heel and transition back to the entertaining “YES” man, or could he try to change it up and turn into a wrestling machine like Kurt Angle later in his late WWE run? – Gareth

A: Everyone has to adapt. You mention Kurt Angle, who went from goofy comedy figure to serious submission machine in the span of a few years. I have no doubt that Bryan could pull off the same if they wanted him to. But right now, the comedy stuff is working, so I say run with it until they actually have a plan for him. The worst thing they could do is break up Hell No and turn Bryan serious without having a direction in mind for him. But I think I can safely say he won’t be feuding with Santino or Hornswoggle, so you can rest easy.

Q: Why do fans give into near falls that aren’t [preceded] by someone’s finish? I just find it strange that we as fans [fall for] the idea that a pinfall can come out of nowhere that doesn’t involve a rollup, GTS, RKO, etc. You would think after the way our brains have been trained we’d know otherwise. – Kenneth

A: That’s a sign you’re watching a great wrestling match with two guys who know what they’re doing. Matt Hardy used the Side Effect as a setup move for years and the fans ALWAYS reacted to it like they thought it was the finish. It always amazed me, but he had the people invested. That’s the magic of pro wrestling.

Q: I just watched Raw from this past Monday. Wow. Just wow. This show sucked and is indicative of where WWE is at right now. I haven’t seen WWE this bad since 1995 when Diesel was champion and we were treated to the likes of T.L. Hopper, Duke “The Dumpster” Droese, and the Dentist Soon To Be Known as Kane. Was WWE 1995 worse than WWE today? – Cliff

A: WWE right now is nowhere near as bad as it was in 1995. I don’t want to say there was nothing redeeming about the product that year because, to be fair, they had some great wrestlers in Bret and Owen Hart, Shawn Michaels, 1-2-3 Kid and Hakushi. Even the pirate guy had a great match with the Hitman, and the Waylon Mercy character is highly underrated, even if Danny Spivey was past his expiration date at that stage of his career. But whatever good there may have been is negated 100 times over by those atrocious gimmicks we were subjected to that year. Could you picture Chris Jericho as The Goon? It almost happened! And let’s not forget Mantaur. I bet Jim Cornette sure wishes he could.

Q: With [the groundhog] lying to us here in the northeast yet again, my question is simple. Does WWE have a backup plan for WrestleMania if the winter weather has not released its grip in the northeast? With the long, elaborate entrances for Mania, what do you think they would do? – Tim from Mechanicsburg, PA

A: Supposedly, they have invested in giant heaters for the stage and ringside area if it’s really cold that night. The rest of us in attendance may freeze our asses off, but otherwise, the show goes on!

Q: Was Ahmed Johnson released from the WWF in 1998 or did he leave on his own? And what’s he up to these days? – Ravonn from NY

A: Ahmed walked out on a Raw taping one night and never came back. He claimed in later interviews the reason he left was because his sister was dying of cancer and he never told Vince McMahon about it. I guess it was a macho thing. As for what he’s up to these days, judging by recent photos, I’d say about 450.

MAILBAG: God’s Plan For Bearer Death, Colter Managing Brodus, Booing Cena and More

SEScoops Mailbag for March 15th

Got a Question? Submit it with your name to: SEScoops@gmail.com

Q: At what point did the general public start to boo John Cena, after he was done with his rapper gimmick? Was it a particular promo that he cut? Did he face a certain opponent? And when did the announcers have to start to acknowledge, on air, that Cena was getting booed? – Jay H.

A: Can’t recall a specific moment, but it wasn’t long after he was drafted to Raw in 2005 and became the face of the company. First time I remember a crowd really crapping on him at a major show would have been Chicago at WrestleMania 22.

Q: I’m halfway through watching TNA’s Lockdown PPV and I couldn’t help but push pause and email my disgust to you. The match quality has been good to great, however Taz must be stopped. My wife is a casual fan, and all she’s had to say is “who is the arrogant wanker on commentary bullying the other guys?” I mean seriously, he adds nothing to this product, I beg Dixie to [just] allow Todd and Tenay to do their jobs. Am I the only one who thinks this would benefit the quality of TNA’s presentation? – Dando from Australia

A: I actually thought Taz was the most entertaining he’s been in a long time on last night’s Impact. He can overbearing at times, but it’s no different than JBL on commentary. When each man talks over the other announcers, they can really be obnoxious. In the right doses, I think they add a lot to a broadcast, particularly JBL who is just great in the role. Todd and Tenay on their own would be pretty bland.

Q: On last week’s Sound Off [podcast], you pondered the idea of Zeb Colter leaving Swagger if he [were to at some point] be embarrassed for his DUI. My question is who would you like to see Colter paired off with? This might be a stretch, but I think he should be paired off with Brodus Clay to “bring the monster out of him.” I think WWE is missing that monster figure and [this] could work. – Shane from Fort Lauderdale, FL

A: Missing that monster figure? Seems to me like they have more than enough monsters right now with Brock Lesnar and Mark Henry, and perhaps Ryback. But I wouldn’t mind seeing Colter take over as manager for Brodus and Tensai once the dancing gimmick has run its course and lead them as a more serious, big man team. Tensai was quite good in that role with Karl Anderson over in New Japan.

Q: After seeing the 3-on-1 assault on Big Show by The Shield on Raw, is he temporarily going babyface or is he still going to be a monster heel? – Luis from Los Angeles

A: He’s still a heel. I can’t wrap my brain around how many turns he’s done over the years. It’s between him and Kane, I’ve lost track of who the current leader is.

Q: Do you think, like I do, that the unfortunate demise of William Moody added SO MUCH to the Undertaker vs. CM Punk match? The much needed reason why they’re having a match, other than just for The Streak at WrestleMania. Like god had this planned out all along or something. Any thoughts? – Valtteri from Finland

A: God is not a wrestling booker. He couldn’t even be bothered to show up for his tag match with Shawn Michaels.

MAILBAG: Will Dolph Ziggler Cash In At WrestleMania?

SEScoops Mailbag for February 25th

Got a Question? Submit it with your name to: SEScoops@gmail.com

Q: Why did they wait so long to debut the new WWE championship belt? Was it because they wanted The Rock to [unveil] it or just disagreements on the look? – Kyle Gray

A: A story on WWE.com about the creation of the new belt indicated they ran into some issues with the title being too heavy and it needed more work before completion. That likely delayed things, and I also think them wanting Rock to debut the new look had something to do with it. After eight years of the Spinner, I’m surprised they couldn’t wait two more months and unveil the title in April to coincide with the 50th anniversary of the championship.

Q: If Lex Luger didn’t leave the WWF in September of 1995, do you think he would have become WWF champion eventually? Was he headed for a heel turn after Summerslam [that year]? And if he was on the card at WrestleMania 12, who would he have faced? – Jay from Ft. Lauderdale

A: If Luger was going to win the title, which had been the plan at one point, it would have already happened by then. So no, I don’t think he would have been champion. He had already been phased down to the mid-card by the time he left for WCW. His partner at the time, the British Bulldog, ended up tagging with WWF champion Diesel on an episode of Raw and turning on him, so Luger himself was not headed for a heel turn. It’s interesting they would have had Davey Boy turn on Diesel and not Luger, which doesn’t speak very highly for how they perceived Luger at the time. As for WM12, my guess is he would have gotten one of the spots in that 6-man tag that opened the show against Vader, Owen and Bulldog.

Q: What are the odds of Dolph Ziggler cashing in [his MITB contract] at WrestleMania, which would make him the first person to do so? I could even see where Vickie [Guerrero] doesn’t book him in a match and he cashes in to spite her and turn babyface. – Dustin from Flair Country

A: If the idea is to phase down Jack Swagger’s character after WrestleMania as punishment for his recent arrest, I think the odds are good. I could see Del Rio beating Swagger with Ziggler cashing in immediately after, and then have Del Rio chase Dolph for the title. However, if Swagger is to remain in the title picture, that makes it unlikely, especially with he and Dolph both being heels.

Q: If you were trying to convince a non-wrestling fan to appreciate pro-wrestling and could choose one match for them to watch, which match would you choose? – Jonathan from the U.K.

A: I’m gonna pick two. One is more “wrestling heavy” than the other, but both tell fantastic stories and are exciting in their own way. Steve Austin vs. Dude Love at “Over the Edge” 1998, with Vince McMahon as guest referee, and Shawn Michaels vs. The Undertaker at WrestleMania 25.

Q: If top WCW stars such as Hulk Hogan, Ric Flair, Sting, Scott Hall, Kevin Nash and a few others were part of the invasion storyline, do you think it would [have been] more successful and would have last beyond Survivor Series 2001? – Ravonn from New York

A: Absolutely, they could have kept it going at least through WrestleMania the following year, if not longer. Build to a supercard with several big matches and either have the WWF come out on top, or split the wins between them and the invaders, which would give way to running WCW as a separate brand. That had been the original plan before Booker T and Buff Bagwell wrestled in Tacoma.

Q: In your opinion, has TNA killed Mister Anderson? – Brian from Orlando

A: You can’t kill something that’s already dead.

Exclusive: More Names From Recent NXT Tryouts In Tampa

This past weekend, WWE held talent tryouts at their NXT facility down in Tampa, FL. While some names have already leaked out, we have a few more we can exclusively add to the list.

Among the 33 or so hopefuls there fighting for a contract, we already know of Ring of Honor’s Adam Cole (their reigning TV champion) and Mike Bennett, Dragon Gate USA star Samuray del Sol, and Extreme Rising star Luke Hawx, who has previously appeared on WWE television in bit roles. In addition to these names, we can report that in attendance were former TNA star Jesse Neal, Shawn Spears (the former Gavin Spears from WWE’s ECW brand), Shaun Ricker of Championship Wrestling from Hollywood, and a former NFL player who seemed to impress at least one WWE official.

Also there for a tryout was John Mills, who appeared on the Oxygen reality TV series “Love Games: Bad Girls Need Love Too”. He appeared on five episodes during the show’s second season before quitting. According to an old profile page on the Oxygen website, he has wrestled independently before as “The Playboy J-Millz”.

No word on who may have made the cut, but those that do are expected to be notified by WWE within the month.

EDITORIAL: 25 Years Ago Today, Remembering The Twin Hebner Angle And Hulk Hogan’s First Championship Defeat

Remembering The Twin Hebner Angle And Hogan’s First Title Loss

ON THIS DAY IN HISTORY, HULK HOGAN LOSES HIS MIND (AND THE WWF TITLE)
by The Solomonster (thesolomonster@gmail.com)
Podcast | Twitter | Facebook

“HOW MUCH MONEY DID THEY SPEND ON THE PLASTIC SURGERY??!”

Those infamous words were uttered by Hulk Hogan on national television 25 years ago today. And astonishingly, Hulk wasn’t referring to his (now ex) wife and her friend when he said that. No, you see, he was referring to the evil trio of Ted DiBiase, Andre the Giant and… EARL HEBNER! What? Earl Hebner, evil? Bret Hart would find out years later exactly how evil Dave Hebner’s baby brother really could be, but let it be known that Hulk Hogan was the original Screwjob victim way back in 1988 when INXS had the #1 hit single in America and the Road Warriors made it cool to wear Zubaz pants.

Here in 2013, Chris Daniels and Frankie Kazarian are trying hard to make Zubaz cool again, but it’s just not the same.

So, why then was the Hulkster ranting and raving like a mental patient about plastic surgery? Let’s set the stage. The date was February 5th. The WWF had been airing taped “Saturday Night’s Main Event” specials on NBC for a few years by this point. As a young wrasslin’ fan, I have fond memories of those shows. The sight of Andre the Giant sneaking up behind an unsuspecting Hogan, following his victory over King Kong Bundy, and wrapping his massive hands around Hogan’s throat, squeezing the life out of him, gave me nightmares. But this show was different. This show, dubbed simply “The Main Event”, aired live on Friday night (back when Friday was perhaps the best night for television) and would feature the first singles meeting between Andre and the champion since their epic encounter at WrestleMania III the previous year.

WWF and NBC hit a homerun that night. The show would do a 15.2 rating, good for 33 million viewers (that number is a bit skewed and likely also includes international viewers, so figure half that number were watching in the U.S. – still impressive), making the Hogan vs. Andre sequel the most watched wrestling match in history, a record that still stands today. Hulk Hogan had headlined as WWF champion for four consecutive years and was arguably at his peak of popularity. Andre, on the other hand, was clearly in physical decline and had long past his peak. In fact, he was barely mobile. One memorable spot from their match saw Andre simply fall face down in what the announcers could only describe as an attempted headbutt (he missed). And maybe it was, but it looked terrible. In fact, as a wrestling match, this pretty much sucked. But with these two guys in the ring, it was never about workrate. That’s what guys like Savage and Steamboat and Santana were there for.

As the match drew to a close, Andre grabbed Hogan and flung him around in the worst excuse for a hip toss I’ve ever seen in my life. As he covered the champion and the referee began to count, Hogan got his shoulder up off the mat, but Hebner kept counting. Just like that, Hogan’s run came to a screeching halt at 1,474 days and Andre was awarded the title.

I guess in hindsight, CM Punk’s 14-month reign ending on a People’s Elbow doesn’t seem nearly as ludicrous.

After the match, Gene Okerlund interviewed Andre, who inexplicably talked about winning the World tag team championship (?!!) and proceeded to surrender the tag team title (don’t look at me, that’s what he said) to Ted DiBiase. And I must say, the title looked awfully good around DiBiase’s waist. I believe he got to defend the title at some house shows in the days that followed before Jack Tunney officially declared the title vacant, but it really is a shame he never had a run on top.

As Hogan stood flabbergasted by what had just taken place, THE GOOD HEBNER emerged to confront his evil twin. It’s funny because, while Dave and Earl do look very much alike, I never had much trouble discerning one from the other, even as a kid. Dave was always the pudgier one. Maybe he was simply big-boned. Whatever the case, when Hogan turned around, he could not believe his eyes, nor could he tell one from the other. He figured it out when Earl knocked his brother to the mat and caved in his ribcage with a wicked kick (supposedly breaking a rib legit). Now, Hogan figured it out. He hoisted Earl high above his head, got a running head start, and proceeded to overshoot his target by a country mile, sending Earl SOARING into the aisleway over everyone’s head (including Andre, and he was a giant!). They were supposed to catch him, but hey, shit happens.

Backstage with Mean Gene, Hogan was a wreck. He was so distraught, he was literally in tears over this grave injustice that had just been committed. It’s too bad The Shield came 20 years too late. Maybe they could have helped prevent all of this. As Hogan whined and cried about plastic surgery, he talked about seeing both Hebners for the first time, exclaiming, “When I turned around, they were identical. IDENTICUUUUULLLL!!!!” Moments later, as they showed a replay in slow-mo of the finish, Hogan desperately tried pointing out to us all the hundred dollar bills falling out of the referee’s pocket. Okerlund didn’t have the heart to tell the big guy that, in fact, there were no hundred dollar bills. As hilarious as this all was, Hogan was a pathetic mess here. Between this and his temper tantrum at the 1992 Royal Rumble when he helped Flair eliminate Sid (who did nothing wrong!), I’m not sure how I was ever a fan of this man.

By the way, there’s a little “easter egg” of sorts to watch for on this show. Prior to his title defense, WWF shot to a pre-taped Hulk Hogan interview backstage. In it, he can be seen wearing what has since been dubbed as the “Hogan ‘87” belt. Yet moments later, when he emerges from the curtain, he’s wearing the Winged Eagle belt that would become synonymous with the company over the next decade. Not sure if the ’87 belt held out for more money before Hogan walked out or mouthed off to the wrong person, but it was never seen again.

A quarter century ago on this date, history was made. Hogan lost his smile. The plastic surgery was bought and paid for. And Andre won the tag team title. A memorable night, indeed.

MAILBAG: Do You Consider Rock To Be A Paper Champion?

Q: With Rock’s current contract limitations, and the fact they’re just using him for another big payday at WrestleMania after which he will be gone promoting movies, could he be considered a paper champion? – Ernesto

A: If your definition of a paper champion is more of a transitional champion, then yes. Rock is only expected to be champion for a limited period of time and get the title back onto John Cena. However, if by paper champion you mean someone who is not deserving of the title or someone who lacks respect, then I disagree. Of course, it’s silly to even use such a phrase in pro wrestling because no one ever really “wins” a title.

Q: I was watching Armageddon 2005 and was wondering what the deal was with the Tim White suicide storyline? – Tom B.

A: Just some dumb fun to amuse the writers, or Vince himself I would imagine. Tim White was forced to retire from officiating because of a chronic shoulder injury and they just wanted to give him something to do. Was it in poor taste? You bet. Suicide isn’t something to make light of (especially in the wrestling business). But for what it was, I actually thought he and Josh Mathews were pretty funny in those skits.

Q: If you can, go back and watch the Royal Rumble match between The Rock and CM Punk around the end. I notice at times you can catch the wrestlers calling out spots and it looks to me like MAYBE CM Punk was supposed to kick out [after the People’s Elbow]. Of course, it’s hard to tell exactly what is being said, but what do you think? Do you think CM Punk was supposed to kick out, but decided not to? – Avery T.

A: I’ve heard nothing to suggest the finish was anything other than what they had planned. If you watch some of Rock’s matches, he has a tendency to say something to his opponent before he covers them for the finish. I can’t make out what it is, but I’ve seen him do it before. CM Punk did not change the finish on the fly. Perhaps he should have though because using a Rockbottom would have been more effective in ending a 434 day title reign than a simple People’s Elbow.

Q: How do you think CM Punk is really feeling about the possibly of missing out on the WrestleMania main event again? The man was champion for well over a year and once again, it’s looking like “Dwayne” and Cena will headline the event. To me, it’s an odd equation because you could argue that Punk wouldn’t have been champion for nearly as long as he did without the Rock match set in stone for the Rumble. I really think the only thing that would match the Cena/Rock main event would be a Punk/Austin match, which won’t happen. But, if I was Punk, I’d feel like I’d taken a nice girl out for a date, got her back to her place, gone upstairs, gotten in her bed, [only for her to turn around and tell me to] go f*ck myself. – Jake from the U.K.

A: If you’ve watched his DVD, I’m sure he’s not thrilled about it. At the same time, he’ll still be featured in a prominent role and will make a ton of money. Hard to feel too badly for anyone like that. Who knows, if Undertaker bows out of the show this year, Punk may yet end up in the main event after all.

Q: CM Punk commented on the January 7th Raw that Daniel Bryan had been reduced from being a dangerous man to a guy that needs a catchphrase to get over. From a mega-mark’s point of view, that’s true. But it’s also not the worst thing in the world. Take a look at Kurt Angle. Angle was a goofball the first 2 1/2 years of his WWE career. Then Vince McMahon wanted him to go bald and be more serious; and while Angle still had goofball moments and the “You suck” chants, he was a no nonsense “Wrestling Machine” until he left for TNA in 2006. That could still happen for Daniel Bryan down the line. The bottom line is that after Bryan won the U.S. title, he became boring and vanilla. If he didn’t run with the popularity of “Yes!” after WrestleMania, he’d be nowhere. He’s got to be a goofball now for his long-term survival. – Cliff

A: You’re right, it’s not the worst thing in a world. He has a role on the show and is over with the audience. But I disagree that he *has* to be a goofball now to ensure his long-term survival. If he dropped his shtick tomorrow, shaved the beard and went all serious, he would be just fine. The man is talented enough to make either role work. The comedy stuff is fine for now, but at some point, it gets old.

Q: Do you remember back in the 90’s when Tammy Sytch gave Elmo a “Sunny day” in that skit on Shotgun? I can’t remember if they showed it here across the Atlantic or not and it was only brought to my attention during an interview I listened to on YouTube. She swapped a Tickle-Me Elmo for a Fondle-Me Elmo! – Andrel from Northampton, England

A: Thank you for the lovely visual.

MAILBAG: Would You Rather See Austin face Cena or Punk?

SEScoops Mailbag for January 21st

Got a Question? Submit it with your name to: SEScoops@gmail.com

Q: After SmackDown was moved from MyNetwork TV to SyFy in 2010, did WWE tell or threaten MyNetwork TV to not allow any MMA or wrestling programming on their channels? The reason that I am asking is that my local MyNetwork TV affiliate, KCOP Channel 13, doesn’t carry a single drop of wrestling or mixed martial arts programming. – Luis Alejandro from Los Angeles

A: There was no threat made. Once their agreement ended with MyNetwork, they would have had no influence over their programming decisions anyway. If your channel has no wrestling or MMA, that’s their choice.

Q: Do you think WWE would be stupid enough to put Stone Cold against [John] Cena instead of CM Punk? Also, how come WWE hasn’t brought in amateur wrestlers like Brock Lesnar or Kurt Angle lately because they could put on brilliant matches. – Gareth from Ireland

A: Cena is the company’s biggest star right now. He did record-setting business with Rock at Mania last year. Why would they be stupid to want to put the two of them together? I would rather see Austin against Punk if he were to wrestle another match, but they would do big business with either of those matches. As for amateur wrestlers, they just signed former Oregon State wrestler Clayton Jack, who was recruited by Gerald Briscoe. He will report to NXT later this month.

Q: I was watching the John Cena vs. Big Show match from WrestleMania 20 and when Michael Cole was talking about Madison Square Garden, he mentioned Big show retiring Hulk Hogan from the Garden the previous year, that being 2003. I checked Wikipedia and could only find Hogan having a falling out from WWE that year, but does not mention Big Show. Could you please explain what Cole is talking about? – Adrian from Australia

A: At a Smackdown taping from MSG the previous June, Big Show pinned Hogan (under a mask doing his Mr. America gimmick) in a six-man tag match, which turned out to be Hogan’s final appearance at the time. After that, Big Show was billed as the man who retired Hulk Hogan.

Q: With the rumored matches for WrestleMania, I wonder if you think WWE is going in the right direction with the main events? We’ve already seen Rock vs. Cena and Brock vs. Triple H. With Punk vs. Undertaker, we all know who is going to win, so it doesn’t make sense to me to feed one of their hardest working and most dependable guys to someone who only shows up once or twice a year. It seems to make more sense to [go with] Brock vs. Undertaker since they’re both part time performers and can feed off the publicity from their UFC confrontation. – Travis

A: The publicity from Undertaker and Brock’s UFC run-in ran its course long ago. I’d like to see the match, but apparently, WWE worries that Taker’s physical state is such that it would be too much of a risk to put him in the ring with the hard-hitting Lesnar. Punk vs. Taker only makes sense if you make it Streak vs. Title, but I doubt Punk keeps the title through Mania. As for Rock vs. Cena, the match made more money for them than any other in history. Why wouldn’t they want to book a rematch? They do it in boxing all the time.

Q: Was the finish for the main event at Starrcade ’97 supposed to be what we saw on TV or was Sting supposed to kick out at two? – Ricardo

A: Referee Nick Patrick was supposed to fast count Sting, leading to Bret Hart coming down and saying he would not allow such an injustice to occur. Of course, Patrick didn’t fast count Sting and Bret Hart looked like a bully when he punched Patrick in the face.

Q: I just watched Zack Ryder’s [Hoeski] music video. This guy has over a million Twitter followers and if used right, he can get over with fans as proven before. What would you do if you were WWE Creative to revive his career? – Rabbi Lucky

A: After watching the video, I’m not sure I’d want to revive his career.

Solomonster Sounds Off (Episode 256)

Solomonster rather enjoyed the wedding angle on Impact and has praise for the show. Unfortunately, TNA squandered that goodwill by screwing over their UK fans and so they get an equal amount of scorn this week. We’ll talk what the company should do, at the very least, to make up for their lack of class, plus talk about Raw’s 20th anniversary, the absurdity of Super Cena, Eve’s WWE departure and where that leaves the Divas division, using Ric Flair to endorse The Miz, why Bobby Heenan hates Tony Schiavone, and a blunt answer on why some fans hate on indy wrestling.

Last week, Solomonster said that if Antonio Cesaro could get Great Khali up for the Neutralizer on Main Event that he would record the Sound Off in a Swiss accent. Well, that Cesaro is one strong SOB. I’m also a man of my word, so I apologize in advance to anyone with a Swiss accent for butchering their native tongue. This week, we’ll talk about one idea for the Rock/Punk match that hasn’t really been mentioned yet, WWE stealing ideas from TNA, the atrocious Mae Young skits from Raw, praise for the Knockouts match on Impact, Sting’s unbelievably LAME comeback on Thursday, the status of Shelton Benjamin and WWE, and will CM Punk ever be as big of a star as John Cena?

MAILBAG: Will HHH Taking Over WWE Be A Good Thing?

SEScoops Mailbag for December 21st

(please submit YOUR questions to sescoops@gmail.com) or follow @solomonster on Twitter and submit them that way!

Q: Who creates the [wrestler’s ring attire]? Do [they] design their own attire or do WWE officials make the decision about it? Rey Mysterio is one prime example because he always has new and updated wrestling gear almost every week. – Gary from Malaysia

A: My understanding is that in many cases, both sides work together. There are people in WWE who offer creative ideas for t-shirt designs and the like, but the wrestlers have a great deal of input into things as well. As far as ring attire goes, look no further than, say, Mantaur or any number of wacky characters over the years as evidence that WWE has their own input into what certain guys should be wearing. The same for be said for The Shield right now – obviously, it’s part of their gimmick. On the flip side, Zack Ryder and the Ghostbuster-themed tights he was recently sporting on Raw would be a great example of a wrestler having significant input into his own attire.

Q: With reports of Jeff Hardy leaving TNA early next year, what do you think will happen to the company once he is gone because I thought he was one of their top merchandise sellers? – Tyler from Davis, FL

A: Personally, I don’t think Jeff Hardy is going anywhere. As far as the fate of TNA were he to leave, it would hurt them a bit, but it wouldn’t be a killer. He does sell the most merchandise, and there has, in fact, been an increase in the number of PPV buys with him as champion (a report in the Wrestling Observer newsletter cited Final Resolution as having done 11,000 buys with Hardy in the main event, a 38% increase over what Aries and Roode were doing as champion). His impact on the ratings has been virtually non-existent. TNA is going to continue to do the same numbers they always do, by and large.

Q: Out of all the WWE champions in history, who do you think is the greatest of all time? – Ravonn from New York City

A: Greatest of all time means different things to different people. Are we talking pop culture impact? Ticket sales and PPV buys? Most title reigns? I’d say each era has its own greatest. Bruno would have been the best of his era, Hogan the best of his, Austin for the Attitude Era, and Cena for the PG Era. You take each of those guys out of the equation and business during that era suffers greatly as a result.

Q: When Triple H takes over WWE, do you think that [will be] a good thing or a bad thing? – Euquine from New York

A: I think it will be a good thing. I already like his approach to handling the developmental system. It feels like a priority now and that largely has to do with Hunter. Then again, I think they realized they needed to create new stars and fast, so really, they had no choice. But he’s an old school guy and we need more of that in today’s wrestling.

Q: Many view John Cena as the Rock of this age, who himself was like Hulk Hogan. In the same way, many draw comparisons to Stone Cold. In that way, who was the Stone Cold of the previous generation? If it was Cena-Rock-Hogan, then who was CM Punk-Stone Cold? – Jeff T.

A: Closest thing I could compare Austin to from the generation that came before would be Roddy Piper. Like Austin, he was a good worker, but had an even better personality. He was controversial at a time when not many others dared to do or say the things that he did. Some would call CM Punk the “Stone Cold” of the modern era, but I think that’s doing a disservice to Punk. He’s great in his own way.

Q: Can you please explain the whole Muhammad Hassan situation that happened on Smackdown that led to his release? Was it really the scene of him chanting some prayers, and some masked people coming and strangling Undertaker with a piano rope that led to his departure? I mean, if that was solely the main reason, Undertaker’s charater did far more extreme things like that, isn’t it? Hassan was a good character, able to draw a tremendous amount of heat, and I feel it’s a pity he was released. – Tej

A: I don’t recall him doing anything wrong. The reason WWE got in so much hot water for airing that angle (which really was pretty stupid) was because they did so on the same day as a terrorist attack in London. While Smackdown was a taped show and they could have, in theory, edited that segment out of the show, they had already sent the tape to UPN, so it was out of their hands. They received a lot of backlash over it and it came out later that the network had basically pressured WWE not to feature the Hassan character on the show going forward. I suppose they could have moved him over to Raw, but I think the damage was done and his goose was cooked at that point.

Q: What do you think would be a harder challenge, facing Ryback in an eating contest or Stone Cold in a beer drinking contest? – Kirk from Fort Worth, TX

A: Trick question. The correct answer is sitting through 3 hours of Raw every week.
