  • Wrestling Bryan Danielson was therapeutic for Ricky Starks

Wrestling Bryan Danielson was therapeutic for Ricky Starks

All Elite Wrestling superstar Ricky Starks thinks fondly of his highly praised No Disqualification Strap Match with Bryan Danielson at AEW All Out on September 3, 2022. Fans loved the match, and Wrestling Observer’s Dave Meltzer awarded him five stars.

In an interview with Forbes, Starks gives his perspective on his brutal contest against ‘The American Dragon.’ Admittedly, the AEW Tag Team Champion didn’t expect the overwhelmingly positive reaction he received for his match.

Forbes’ Blake Oestriecher transcribed the following quotes.

“It was cool that people reacted the way they did. I was blown away by it because I didn’t expect that type of reaction,” said Starks. He continued,  “It was nice that someone thought highly enough to give it that rating. I thought that was pretty cool.”

While Starks took on Danielson at the event, the company was building towards CM Punk being his challenger. However, the company fired CM Punk due to a backstage incident ahead of the event, and they decided to pivot to Danielson as Stark’s opponent at AEW All Out.

Starks shared in the interview that he felt unsure of himself ahead of the Danielson match and why his match at AEW All Out was important to him.

“It was really a very therapeutic type of match for me,” said Starks. He explained, “My confidence had wavered up until that point just a little bit, and that really made me think, alright, this is where things start to pick up. Talk about putting the company on my shoulders and wanting to be the man, and I think I proved it.”

Ricky Starks On Being Praised By Bryan Danielson After Their Match

Although fans praised the match, the biggest compliment came from Danielson. After their match at AEW All Out, ‘The American Dragon’ credited Starks for his efforts and called him a star. The comments meant a lot to the AEW Tag Team Champion, and he was honored that Danielson thought highly of his performance.

“…The best part about that was the high compliment that Bryan gave me in that press conference afterward,” said Starks. He added, “Him saying that I’m one of his favorite opponents, that really means a lot. The fact that he said that was a badge of honor. Like, I know I belong.”

Although Starks lost the No Disqualification Strap Match, he earned many fans and Danielson’s respect that night. The stars may currently be involved in different storylines, but it’s possible they will face off in the ring again in the future.

  • Hiroshi Tanahashi Wants The IWGP World Heavyweight Championship

Hiroshi Tanahashi Wants The IWGP World Heavyweight Championship

New Japan Pro Wrestling is in a unique era under the leadership of President and active wrestler Hiroshi Tanahashi. After getting the position on December 23, 2023, fans have wondered when the NJPW veteran would take a step back from wrestling. However, Tanahashi has confirmed he will continue wrestling and wants the IWGP World Heavyweight Championship.

In an interview with Yahoo Japan, Tanahashi shared that he aspires to become the world champion and aims to be the best.

Tanahashi Still Aims For The Throne

Yahoo Japan also transcribed the following quotes.

“The fighting spirit disappears when I no longer aim to be the best. If I feel like I can’t reach it or can’t do it anymore, I’ll retire immediately,” said Tanahashi.

He continued, “I want to aim for the throne no matter what so that people won’t think, ‘No, I don’t get tired (lol). I’ll bring my body to its peak once again.”

While Tanahashi hopes to lead NJPW into a new era, some fans are worried about if he can separate his two jobs. He is in a unique position, being the boss of his peers and looking to win titles.

    What’s Next For Hiroshi Tanahashi?

Tanahashi’s year is off to a great start as he begins his first year as the NJPW President and active wrestler. He defeated Zack Sabre Jr. at NJPW Wrestle Kingdom 18 on January 4 to become the NJPW World Television Champion. Since then, he has successfully defended the title once against Ryusuke Taguchi at NJPW New Year’s Dash on January 5.

His next big match will be against longtime rival and former IWGP World Heavyweight Champion Kazuchika Okada.

For the ‘Rainmaker’s’ last match under NJPW, he’ll take on Tanahashi at NJPW The New Beginning In Osaka on February 11. It’s unclear who will win, but Tanahashi is seemingly the favorite to be victorious.

If the momentum continues for Tanahashi, he could potentially enter the 2024 NJPW New Japan Cup and earn a chance to challenge for the IWGP World Heavyweight Championship.

This year is looking great for Tanahashi. Hopefully, he can find balance as the NJPW President and wrestler.

  • CM Punk Injury: Torn Triceps Puts WrestleMania Match In Jeopardy, Surgery Likely

CM Punk Injury: Torn Triceps Puts WrestleMania Match In Jeopardy, Surgery Likely

The ‘Road To WrestleMania’ may look bleak for WWE superstar CM Punk. He competed at WWE Royal Rumble on January 27 for the first time in over a decade and looked in good shape. However, fans noticed he favored his arm in the Men’s Royal Rumble Match.

According to PWInsider, Punk suffered a torn triceps during Saturday’s Royal Rumble match. Sources indicate that he will need surgery, which would keep him out for 4-6 months.

‘The belief among sources we have spoken with is that post-surgery, CM Punk would likely need in the area of 4-6 months of recovery and physical therapy.’

Punk is expected to address the WWE Universe on the January 29 episode of Monday Night Raw from Tampa, FL.

How did CM Punk’s Injury Occur?

Fans have pointed out that Punk looked hurt after he took a Future Shock DDT from Drew McIntyre in the Men’s Royal Rumble match. The report noted that Punk allegedly told a referee during the match that it was his tricep.

It’s unclear if this is the same tricep he injured in a match against Jon Moxley at AEW All Out on September 4, 2022.

CM Punk’s WrestleMania Plans In Doubt

This injury would likely remove him from a potential match against  WWE World Heavyweight Champion Seth Rollins at WWE WrestleMania 40 in April. If he injured the same tricep against Moxley, he could be out of action for several months and possibly return in late 2024.

While it seemed WWE was leaning towards a Punk and Rollins showdown at WWE WrestleMania 40, they have also teased WWE Intercontinental Champion Gunther as the title challenger. On the January 22 episode of WWE Monday Night Raw, ‘The Ringe General’ had an in-ring segment with Rollins and showed interest in becoming the  WWE World Heavyweight Champion.

Although Punk vs. Rollins may have been in the works, a potential title vs. title match between Gunther and Rollins could make for a big program for WWE WrestleMania 40. If Punk is injured, hopefully, he can fully recover and reignite his feud with Rollins later this year.

  • Hulk Hogan crashes wrestling event during Royal Rumble weekend

Hulk Hogan crashes wrestling event during Royal Rumble weekend

As the WWE Royal Rumble quickly approaches, Hulk Hogan continues to tease he could be involved. The WWE Hall of Famer alluded to being a surprise participant in the Men’s Royal Rumble Match on the January 22 episode of Monday Night Raw. While fans may not haven’t taken it seriously, he is doubling down on a potential return.

In a video taken by SEScoops’ own Dominic DeAngelo, Hogan teased being a participant at an event hosted by Conrad Thompson and Eric Bischoff. It is also worth noting that it occurred in Clearwater, Florida, which isn’t far from Tampa, Florida, where the premium live event will occur on Saturday.

In the video, Hogan said, “Is anyone going to the Royal Rumble?” After the audience cheered, the WWE Hall Of Famer replied, “…Someone told me I might get number 30.”

Here is the full video of Hogan’s comments at the event held by Thompson and Bischoff.

    Hulk Hogan’s Current Health Status

Hogan’s decision to continue to tease a potential appearance in the match has led to fans questioning his health. He has been plagued with injuries and has undergone multiple surgeries on his back.

However, in an interview with Peter Rosenberg earlier this month, his longtime friend Jimmy Hart shared that he believes Hogan could work a Men’s Royal Rumble Match if he wanted.

“…I think he could do whatever he wants to do, but I’m telling you what, he could still throw those punches. He could also use a chair if he had to, but I think the fans wouldn’t really care. They would love to have him there, but they wouldn’t care if he could throw a punch or if he couldn’t just to be in the building with Hulkamania and do that; they would be so thrilled for him.”

While Hart feels Hogan can compete and the former WWE Champion is feeding into a potential return, the company would seemingly be cautious of the idea. It has been proven true that anything can happen in WWE, but Hogan’s involvement could lead to another injury to the wrestling veteran.

Regardless, fans will continue to speculate if he will be a participant, as the WWE Royal Rumble is always full of surprises.

  • AJ Styles reflects on Edge’s Royal Rumble return

It’s been four years since Edge returned to wrestling after being forced to retire due to an injury. He made his comeback at the WWE Royal Rumble on January 26, 2020, as a surprise entrant in the men’s match. The surprise appearance was a memorable moment that fans and other WWE superstars, including AJ Styles, will remember.

In an interview with Wrestlesphere, ‘The Phenomenal One’ reflects on Edge’s return and what being in the match for his entrance was like.

Wrestlesphere’s Joe Baiamonte transcribed the following quotes.

“It was pretty unbelievable to see that reaction,” said Styles. He continued, “It was a special moment. I enjoyed it. I actually sat back in the corner and watched it all. It was really, really cool.”

At the time, it was unclear what WWE’s plans were for Edge, but Styles hoped that he’d be able to have a match with the ‘Rated R Superstar.’ WWE fans may recall they had a staredown and exchanged offense in the 2020 Men’s Royal Rumble Match. In the interview, Styles admitted he wanted to use the moment to plant seeds for a potential match with Edge.

“As soon as he came back, that Royal Rumble, we planted the seed, said Styles. He explains, “Because we knew if there’s an opportunity, we’ve got to plant the seed now. That was the moment we did it at the Royal Rumble.”

Two years later, the two would be in a feud, including a featured match at WWE WrestleMania 38 on April 3, 2022. While Edge has moved on to AEW, Styles will compete in a title match at this year’s event.

AJ Styles Aims To Get Revenge on Roman Reigns

Roman Reigns will defend the WWE Championship against Styles, LA Knight, and Randy Orton tonight. ‘The Phenomenal One’ hopes to become a three-time WWE Champion, as he has reentered the title picture. He also wants to get revenge on Reigns, as he, in the storyline, had the Bloodline(Solo Sikoa & Jimmy Uso) injure him.

The odds are not in Reign’s favor, but he is expected to retain his championship. It’s unclear if Styles will get another opportunity to lose. However, WWE fans should expect ‘The Phenomenal One’ to give everything he has as he tries to win the WWE Championship for a third time.

  • Dijak Downplays Potential Match With Kazuchika Okada

Former New Japan Pro Wrestling superstar Kazuchika Okada has the wrestling community buzzing as he enters free agency. It was revealed on January 18 that he would be leaving NJPW and is looking to find a new home.

It’s speculated that he will either go to WWE or All Elite Wrestling after his contract expires. Okada is seemingly keeping his decision private as he figures out where he wants to sign.

However, the Japanese wrestling outlet Monthly Puroresu reported on January 23 that they’ve spoken to sources close to Okada, who shared he’s expected to sign with WWE. Furthermore, Puroresu shared that, instead of starting on the main roster, he would compete on WWE NXT, similar to how his friend Shinsuke Nakamura began his WWE career.

Although it’s worth noting Okada hasn’t publicly made a decision, fans started thinking of potential matches for him in WWE NXT. One talent that fans asked about facing the ‘Rainmaker’ is Dijak, who isn’t enthusiastic about the potential matchup.

In response to fans’ interest, Dijak downplayed the idea of facing Okada on Twitter unless it came with bigger stakes.

“I don’t give the slightest sh*t about wrestling Okada unless he’s the NXT Champion, so you can take your fantasy booking nonsense and go F yourself with it,” wrote Dijak

It’s unclear if Dijak is responding in character or if he feels this way. He is currently focused on becoming an NXT Champion but is also involved in a feud with Joe Gacy. If Okada were to join WWE NXT, he’d seemingly be another opponent that would stand in Dijak’s way of becoming champion.

That said, AEW is confident they’ll sign Okada instead

Conflicting Reports On Kazuchika Okada Free Agent Status

Although Puroresu reported that Okada is seemingly WWE-bound, other outlets have shared that AEW believes they will be with them soon, including recently Wrestling Observer’s Dave Meltzer.

Meltzer reported on January 26 that “…The last word was that he had not made up his mind. I know people here(AEW) range from hopeful to, I’d perceive as confident he will be coming. If he was to sign, the likely arrival would be around the Greensboro show with his final New Japan date on 2/24.”

It seems nothing is yet set in stone as both companies look to sign Okada. As of now, potential dream matches will have to wait until the former NJPW superstar decides.

  • Nia Jax Refuses To Let Vince McMahon’s Scandal Take Her Focus Off WWE Royal Rumble

Nia Jax Refuses To Let Vince McMahon’s Scandal Take Her Focus Off WWE Royal Rumble

TKO Executive Chairman Vince McMahon’s past has caught up to him yet again after a lawsuit was filed against him by a former employee. As of now, it is unclear what actions will be taken on McMahon after new allegations of sexual assault and sex trafficking.

The lawsuit comes at an interesting time for WWE superstars, as the company prepares for the WWE Royal Rumble and is speaking with the media on-site. While some focused questions will be about Saturday’s premium live event, talent may also be asked about their thoughts on the new allegations about McMahon.

One of the superstars who has spoken about her mindset heading into the PLE after the startling allegation is Nia Jax. She talked to Nick Hausman about whether the news on McMahon has affected her as she prepares for the 2024 Women’s Royal Rumble Match.

In the interview, Jax shared that it doesn’t and that she is focused on the WWE Royal Rumble this Saturday.

    Hausman transcribed the following quotes.

“… I’m all business,” said Jax. She continued, “… this business is built on hard work and dedication, and that’s what every single wrestler in this room is doing right now, and so we just move forward. And it’s, you know, and we’re gonna put on an amazing show.”

It’s unclear if other superstars feel the same way as they prepare for one of WWE’s biggest events of the year. However, McMahon’s recent allegation has made fans question if more questions will be asked this Saturday.

Will There Be A Press Conference After WWE Royal Rumble?

The current expectation is that the company will hold a press conference after WWE Royal Rumble. If it were to occur as usual, it’s unknown what talent will be available for questions, but it is assumed that the Head Of Creative, Paul ‘Triple H’ Levesque, will appear.

Wrestling’s Observer’s Dave Meltzer has reported that WWE has told talent to “Lay low and not talk about anything other than the Royal Rumble or storyline-related things.” It’s unclear if Levesque or other WWE superstars will comment directly on McMahon as the TKO Chairman deals with the new lawsuit.

  • Tyler Bate Wants To Airplane Spin Omos At WWE Royal Rumble

Tyler Bate Wants To Airplane Spin Omos At WWE Royal Rumble

WWE superstar Tyler Bate is looking for his big moment at the WWE Royal Rumble this Saturday. Since joining the main roster, Bate has looked impressive, showcasing his strength and technical in-ring ability. However, he plans to have his most ambitious showing on the main roster at the expense of ‘The Nigerian Giant.’

Bate spoke recently with TNT Sports’ Chamatkar Sandhu about being on the WWE Friday Night Smackdown brand and his year-long goals. The former WWE NXT United Kingdom Champion said he wants to win the tag team championships with Pete Dunne and potentially end the Judgement Day’s(Damian Priest & Finn Balor) title reign. He also admitted wanting to showcase his strength in the 2024 Men’s Royal Rumble Match against Omos.

“…We also have the Royal Rumble coming soon, and for the past seven years, I’ve been a part of the WWE, I’ve been saying that I want to get into the Royal Rumble and I want to Airplane Spin the biggest guy in the middle of the ring. So Omos, if you are listening,” said Bate. He added, “…I’ve been saying it and it’s going to happen. It’s going to happen at some point.”

Although Bate wants to compete in this year’s match, WWE has yet to announce if he will be an entrant in the 2024 Men’s Royal Rumble Match.

Tyler Bate’s Status In The The Men’s Royal Rumble Match

Currently, WWE has only advertised seven participants in the men’s match, including CM Punk and Cody Rhodes. For the past few years, the company has shared most of who would be involved in the match before the event. It’s unclear if that has changed, and fans will have to wait to see who makes an appearance.

While there is uncertainty, it’s possible Bate could be one of the other competitors involved in the 2024 Mens Royal Rumble Match. He has been featured since jumping to the main roster, and the company would seemingly want to showcase the former WWE NXT United Kingdom Champion.

For now, fans will have to wait for a full reveal of who will have a chance to main event WWE WrestleMania 40 in April.

  • Bayley Utilizing WWE’s Royal Rumble To Cement Her Legacy And Make 2024 Her Best Year

Bayley Utilizing WWE’s Royal Rumble To Cement Her Legacy And Make 2024 Her Best Year

As the WWE Royal Rumble approaches, Bayley is ready to show the wrestling world that 2024 will be her year. She helped make Damage CTRL (Iyo Sky, Asuka, Kairi Sane & Dakota Kai) one of the dominant groups in the WWE. While she is proud of the success of her faction, ‘The Role Model’ wants to win gold and cement her legacy this year.

In an interview with Uproxx Sports, Bayley boasted that she believes she is on a different level than her peers and plans to prove it at the WWE Royal Rumble on January 27. Uproxx Sports’ Raj Prashad transcribed the following quotes.

“To me, this year in particular is about cementing my legacy and my career,” Bayley said. “I’ve done a lot up until this point. With Damage CTRL, I feel like I’m on a different level than everybody else, even the women that I came up with because it comes with a different responsibility.”

This year marks Bayley’s fifth attempt at winning the Women’s Royal Rumble Match. However, ‘The Role Model’ is seemingly one of the favorites to be victorious and challenging for a woman’s title.

Bayley’s Chances Of Winning The 2024 Women’s Royal Rumble Match

She is currently involved in a storyline where her group is counting on her to win and challenge WWE Women’s World Champion Rhea Ripley at WWE WrestleMania 40 in April. She also aims for all members of Damage CTRL to hold titles at the same time this year.

“Let me just say it, this is the last time I’m gonna say it. IYO is champion, right? And in Damage CTRL, that means we’re all kind of a champion,” said Bayley.

She explains, “She deserves to have that all to her own. Kabuki Warriors, we’re gonna get them those tag titles because it’s what they deserve. If I get a title from Rhea Ripley, how cool would that look?”

She added that she wants Kai to win the NXT Women’s Championship when she is cleared to wrestle again. This would mark a rare achievement, with an all-female faction in WWE simultaneously holding all the women’s titles in the company.

“…We’re about making history. We’re about never before seen, and we’re about taking over the world. So, the only way we could do that is by knocking Mami off her little high horse. She thinks she’s the stuff right now. Wait til I get my hands on her,” said Bayley.

It’s unclear if Bayley will ultimately win, as she has 29 other opponents vying to defeat her in the Women’s Royal Rumble Match. That said, the former WWE SmackDown Women’s Champion remains confident that she will shock the world and have her moment this weekend.

  • Cody Rhodes On The Possibility Of The Rock Hijacking His Story: “You Never Know With WWE”

Raw Superstar Cody Rhodes remains focused on finishing his story, but the American Nightmare’s path to realizing his wrestling destiny remains unclear.

Wrestling fans have been rightfully uneasy about Rhodes’  personal Road to WrestleMania. After last year’s crushing defeat to Roman Reigns in the main event of WrestleMania 39, its looked like he is headed for a long-awaited rematch against the Undisputed Universal Champion at WrestleMania 40.

Nothing is guaranteed in wrestling and there are several other people vying for the position Rhodes and his fans may expect belongs to him.

    The Rock Enters The Picture

The Rock is a prime candidate to spoil hopes for WrestleMania 40 to be the stage for Cody’s crowning moment.

On Tuesday, veteran journalist Justin Barrasso of Sports Illustrated dropped a bombshell report that sources of his close to Paul ‘Triple H’ Levesque told him that Cody Rhodes is NOT currently factored in as Roman Reigns’ opponent at WrestleMania.

Barrasso believes it will instead be The Great One battling the Head of the Table.

After joining TKO Group’s board of directors, The Rock confirmed the door is open for him to compete again.

Cody Rhodes Doubts The Rock Will Interrupt His Story

So, is Cody getting nervous yet?  Earlier this month, he told Barrasso that he plans to win the Royal Rumble and ‘finish the story’ at WrestleMania.

In a new interview with Bleacher Report‘s Mike Chiari, Rhodes says he plans on outlasting 29 other Superstars to become only the fourth man in history to win the Royal Rumble match twice.

Rhodes remains confident about the big picture, but admits anything can happen. Here’s what he said (transcribed by Mike Chiari)

“You mentioned ‘The Great One’ The Rock.. nothing but respect for him. I went and saw Jungle Cruise. I’m a Rock fan.”

Rhodes continued, “I don’t think he’s the type that would come in and meddle with a story that’s been being told over the past two years. I think he’s probably up to something else, but you never know with WWE. I’ll be watching just like everybody else when I’m not wrestling.”

Rhodes’ comments could be a show of confidence or trying to cope with what may be happening. For now, WWE fans must let it play out and see how this ‘story’ ends.

  • Former WCW Star Ice Train Passes Away At Age 56

Former WCW Star Ice Train Passes Away At Age 56

The wrestling community mourns the loss of former WCW talent Harold Houge, AKA Ice Train. His longtime friend, Diamond Dallas Page, announced the unfortunate news this afternoon on Instagram

Page shared photos of them in the post and a heartfelt tribute to Houge.

“It was so Sad to hear that one of my closest brothers is gone. Harold Houge, aka H, aka Ice Train, aka Smooth, was a warrior and one of the kindest people I’ve ever known,” wrote Page.

DDP also reflected on a time when he and Houge helped those in need during Christmas in the past, and that is one of his fondest memories of their time together.

He shared that he would release a tribute video next week and ended the post by writing, “RIP my brother! You will be missed but never forgotten!
    Much Love & Respect.”

Houge passes away at age 56. As of now, it is unclear what is his cause of death.

    Ice Train WCW Career

Houge began his WCW career in 1993, pushed by the company as a powerhouse “babyface.” He would appear on WCW Worldwide and Saturday Night, winning dominantly. In a short period of time, he would make his pay-per-view debut, defeating Shanghai Pierce swiftly at WCW Fall Brawl on September 9, 1993

Two months after his PPV debut, he also found himself in a WCW Tag Team Championship opportunity with Ron Simmons against The Nasty Boys. Although Houge and Simmons would lose, Houge displayed his power and had the crowd behind him.

Unfortunately, he was unable to continue the momentum heading into 1994. He suffered his first singles loss to Simmons at WCW Clash Of The Champions on January 27, 1994. Houge’s next big run in the company would happen when he began to team with Scott Norton as Fire and Ice in early to mid-1996.

More On Ice Train Career in WCW

Both Houge and Norton were featured as a powerhouse tag team that wrestling fans still remember today. They weren’t able to capture the WCW Tag Team Championship, but there was a tag team that fans enjoyed watching be physical with the rest of the division, including the Steiner Brothers(Rick and Scott Steiner).

Fire and Ice started to split by the Summer of 1996, and they ended up feuding against each other. Both stars would have several matches culminating in a submission match at Fall Brawl on September 15, 1996. Houge was victorious by defeating Norton and ending their rivalry.

While he got the big win over Norton, WCW couldn’t continue Houge’s momentum for the remainder of his time in the company. Although Houge’s never won a title, he was a fan favorite to WCW fans growing up and will be remembered.

SEScoops sends their condolences to Houge’s family and friends.

  • Trailer for ‘Love & WWE: Bianca & Montez’ premiering Feb. 2 on Hulu

Trailer for ‘Love & WWE: Bianca & Montez’ premiering Feb. 2 on Hulu

WWE Superstars Bianca Belair and Montez Ford are ready to show fans behind the scenes of their married life. The couple’s Hulu Original reality TV show titled “Love & WWE: Bianca & Montez is set to premiere on February 2. While the fans have to wait another week, Hulu released a trailer for the upcoming show.

The trailer showed fans what to expect from the show, including the couple managing their personal life and being WWE superstars. One of the interesting moments of the trailer was Ford admitting to having difficulty figuring out his place in the company in his third year on the main roster and wanting to prove that he is more than “Bianca Belair’s husband.”

The show will have a total of seven episodes, which surprisingly will all be released on Hulu on February 2. The popular subscription service usually features episodes of an original series weekly until the finale. It’s unclear why the decision was made to release all seven episodes simultaneously.

Regardless, “Love & WWE: Bianca & Montez” should give fans more insight into Belair and Montez’s relationship, just in time before Valentine’s Day. However, it seems we will also get appearances from other WWE superstars, such as Omos and Angelo Dawkins, who appeared in the trailer.

The timing of the new reality TV show is also interesting as the power couple tries to find their spot at WWE WrestleMania 40 in April.

Bianca Belair & Montez Ford Current Storylines Heading Towards WrestleMania 40

WWE is currently on the “Road to WrestleMania,” the company is slowly putting the pieces together for what WWE WrestleMania matches could look like in April. A few superstars, including Ford, are starting to be involved in interesting storylines.

Ford is involved in a faction with Dawkins and Bobby Lashley. The group is currently in a feud with The Final Testament(Karrion Kross,  Akam, Rezar, Scarlett & Paul Ellering), which started after the “heel” faction attacked Ford, Dawkins, and Lashley on the January 5 episode of Friday Night Smackdown. The two groups are set for a confrontation on the January 26 episode and could seemingly continue the feud heading into WWE WrestleMania 40.

Belair is in an interesting position as she looks to win the 2024 Women’s Royal Rumble Match on January 27. She hopes to challenge WWE Women’s Champion Iyo Sky for the title at WWE Wrestlemania 40. However, she has the tough task of defeating 29 other superstars to earn her opportunity. If she is unsuccessful, what WWE will have planned for her at this year’s event is unclear.

The couple is excited about their upcoming show and hopes to have a match on the “Grandest Stage Of Them All.”

  • WWE 2K24 Cover Star Cody Rhodes Gives Himself An Ultimatum Ahead Of The Royal Rumble

WWE 2K24 Cover Star Cody Rhodes Gives Himself An Ultimatum Ahead Of The Royal Rumble

WWE is officially on the “Road to WrestleMania,” and fans wonder if Cody Rhodes will finish his “Story.” Although he is experiencing success in his second stint with the company and is the new cover star for WWE 2K24, Rhodes is still looking to become a WWE Champion.

In an interview with Sports Illustrated’s Justin Barrasso, Rhodes discussed the importance of being on the cover of WWE 2K24 and wanting to finish his “Story.” He also admitted to feeling a little overwhelmed when he faced WWE Champion Roman Reigns at WWE WrestleMania 39 last year.

    Barrasso transcribed the following quotes.

“WrestleMania 39, I don’t want to say I shrunk under the lights, but it hit me harder than it hit Roman Reigns,” said Rhodes. He continued, “Roman has been in those main events before. If anything, it motivated me further. It’s not just about being in the main event. It’s not about being happy to make the walk. You have to win.”

As he prepares for the WWE Royal Rumble on January 27, “The American Nightmare” has imposed a unique ultimatum upon himself.

Cody Rhodes Doesn’t Want To Be On The Next WWE 2K Cover If He Doesn’t Finish His Story

Although he is happy to be the WWE 2K24 cover star, he doesn’t believe he should be in that position if he doesn’t win the WWE Championship this year. He also joked about not being in next year’s game if he doesn’t accomplish his goal.

“If I haven’t finished the story by WWE 2K25, don’t bring me back for the commercial,” said Rhodes. “Don’t put me on the cover, don’t put me anywhere near it. I won’t deserve it. But it’s fun that this is happening in real-time, and we all get to experience it together.”

“The American Nightmare” is staying positive and highly motivated to bring the WWE Championship to the Rhodes Family. However, he will have 29 other superstars standing in his way at the WWE Royal Rumble. There is also the rumor that the company could be looking to have The Rock challenge Roman Reigns at WWE WrestleMania 40 in April.

Regardless, Rhodes has pressured himself to finish his “Story” before the next WWE 2K game.

The film company added that it will also come with a warm-up jacket for the action figure seen in the movie. It’s unclear if A24 plans to release other action figures based on The Iron Claw, like Jeremy Allen White’s role as Kerry Von Erich.

The back of the package for their upcoming action figure, besides Efron and White, also has Holt McCallany(Fritz Von Erich), Harris Dickinson (David Von Erich), and Stanley Simons(Mike Von Erich). The success of their first action figure could possibly lead to more with the rest of the Von Erich Family featured in the film.

No official release date has been shared from A24. However, fans in the comment section have pointed out that the film has yet to be released worldwide.

The Iron Claw Box Office & Future Release In Other Countries

Business Report’s Dillion Lowe shared that the film was made on a $15 million budget. According to Box Office Mojo, it has grossed over $29 million in the United States. Although The Iron Claw has made a profit, it hasn’t been available to people in different parts of the world.

The film is slowly being released in other countries this year and three countries in the last two weeks. Box Office Mojo has shared that the film has been released in the United Arab Emirates(January 4), Russia (January 11) and Iceland (January 12). All three countries boosted sales for a combined over $181 thousand.

Digital Spy’s Sam Warner reported that the film will go to theaters in the United Kingdom on February 9. It’s unclear if the movie will go to other markets like Japan, France, and Mexico. A24’s film could cross well over $30 million at the box office, but it may not be as much as it could’ve been. The long wait will have the film competing with newer releases in different countries.

Regardless, A24’s The Iron Claw is already a success and will try to add more revenue with their upcoming action figure.

  • ‘Double Surgeries’ – AEW star Keith Lee dealt another setback

All Elite Wrestling superstar Keith Lee’s year is off to a rocky start. He suffered a setback last month when he had to pull out of a match against Swerve Strickland at AEW World’s End due to an injury. While fans have been hopeful he would return to action soon, he won’t be able to compete for a while.

In a statement written to Nick Hausman, Lee shared that he is set to undergo two double surgeries. AEW star seems to admit that he didn’t need surgery for 19 years of his career, but unfortunately, it was his time.

Hausman transcribed the following quotes he received from Lee.

“Took roughly 19 years…. but I guess it’s my turn,” wrote Lee. He continued, “Time to get fixed. Here’s to double surgeries. Certainly, one way to start 2024.”

It’s unclear what the specific injury Lee has to get fixed or how long he is expected to be out of action. The update from the AEW superstar is unfortunate, as it seemed like he was recently building momentum in the company.

Lee started gaining traction by winning a mixed eight-person tag team match at AEW WrestleDream on October 1, 2023. He continued to be featured for both AEW and Ring Of Honor, including competing in a loss against Samoa Joe for the ROH World Television Championship. In his last three matches, he won three consecutive matches, and AEW was ready to feature his long-awaited rematch with Strickland.

At this time, it’s unclear if the company plans to continue with the program when he eventually returns.

Could AEW Continue the Feud Between Keith Lee & Swerve Strickland

Although the feud between Lee and Strickland is unresolved, Strickland has moved on to another big storyline. He is in the mix to compete for the AEW World Championship and is involved in a feud with “Hangman” Adam Page.

On the January 10 episode of AEW Dynamite, Strickland shared his intentions to challenge for the world title before Page interrupted him. AEW may have another match planned between Page and Strickland as they look to end their rivalry. While it’s unclear if Strickland will get another win and move on to challenge for the championship, AEW seems to have plans for him.

Lee’s primary focus for the foreseeable future will be to recover from injuries. If he can return fully healthy, he can build momentum again, and the company can restart his feud with Strickland.

Although the timing of the injuries is unlucky, AEW fans will support Lee and look forward to him returning to the ring at 100 percent.

  • R-Truth winning over Finn Balor and the Judgment Day with bags full of cash

R-Truth is finding creative ways to prove to Damian Priest, Finn Balor, Rhea Ripley and Dominik Mysterio that he can be an indispensable member of the Judgement Day.

Truth has been on a mission to become a full-fledged member of the faction despite most of the group’s dismissals. However, that could change in storyline after the former two-time WWE United States Champion has shown that he is a money-maker.

On the January 15 episode of WWE Monday Night Raw, Priest had a backstage segment with Truth ahead of their tag team match. The man currently in possession of the Men’s Money In The Bank briefcase confronted Truth about selling one of his new collaborative t-shirts with Judgement Day. However, the former WWE United States Champion calmed his concerns when he gave Priest a stack of cash from the proceeds.

Truth also noted that everyone in the group would get a cut of the profits and that he made a new collaborative t-shirt for ‘Tom and Nick Mysterio.’

WWE has released new merchandise on the WWE Shop called “The Judgment Day & R-Truth Three Amigos T-Shirt,” featuring Truth and “Dirty Dom” for $32.99. This marks the third t-shirt since the storyline between Truth and Judgement Day began, which may show the success of their collaboration.

Finn Balor Very Happy With R-Truth Selling T-Shirts

Later in the show, Truth teamed with The Miz to take on Priest and Balor. Before it could start, Truth gave Balor and Mysterio a handful of $100 to share the success of their t-shirt sales. It’s worth noting that McDonagh, who was at ringside, didn’t get anything because, in the storyline, he lost his spot in the group to Truth.

Judgment Day would defeat the “babyfaces” after Priest landed South Of Heaven on Truth. Despite giving them issues, both Balor and Mysterio were elated after the match and thankful for Truth.

In a Twitter post, Balor shared a backstage video of himself and Mysterio looking at the money that Truth gave them. While expressing their happiness, Mysterio mentioned that McDonagh didn’t get his money cut.

Balor responded, “He don’t deserve a cut. His name is not on the shirt.” While that comment could be in jest, this could lead to more implications for the group.

    Will Judgement Day accept R-Truth?

In the tag team match, WWE fans noticed Priest was unhappy after landing the South Of Heaven on Truth. In the backstage segment between them, he noted that the rest of the group was not thrilled with Truth’s antics. As the former WWE United States Champion becomes more involved with the faction, this could lead to internal issues between Judgement Day.

McDonagh is already having issues with Truth, but Mysterio and Balor may also get fed up with the ongoing antics. This could lead to Priest being put on the spot to handle Truth, and he may be conflicted. The group has had issues, but this longtime WWE veteran could be the catalyst for Judgement Day finally butting heads.

Currently, it seems the group will continue trying to get along with Truth as he shows his worth. However, it seems only a matter of time before something will push them too far.

  • Kofi Kingston update following after Xavier Woods’ return on Raw

The January 15 episode of WWE Monday Night Raw gave fans an update on Kofi Kingston’s status. On the January 8 episode of the show, Kingston was attacked by Ludwig Kaiser, resulting in him being injured. WWE Commentator Michael Cole revealed on this past WWE Monday Night Raw that the former WWE Champion is expected to be out for a few weeks.

Cole shared that Kingston’s injury was a “Cervical neck sprain and an AC sprain.” It’s unclear if these injuries are legitimate or a part of a storyline. Both injuries would seemingly rule out Kingston’s involvement in the WWE Royal Rumble on January 27.

That said, his partner Xavier Woods made his return and wants to get revenge for Kingston. Woods faced Kaiser on the January 15 episode and lost by disqualification after The New Day member hit him with a chair. They continued to brawl after the match, with Woods getting the better of the exchange.

In a backstage interview with Byron Sexton, the former King Of The Ring Winner tried to explain his actions but was attacked from behind by Kaiser. Before the Imperium member could continue, Jey Uso appeared to stop the assault.

For two weeks, Uso helped Kingston in his feud against the Imperium (Kaiser & Giovanni Vinci). Since Vinci and Kingston are out with an injury, this could lead to Uso and WWE Intercontinental Champion Gunther being more involved in the storyline.

What Could Be Next In The Storyline?

Although Woods is looking to get revenge on Kaiser for Kingston, Uso could soon set his sights on Gunther’s championship. “The Ring General” has looked unbeatable since winning the title on the June 10, 2022, episode of WWE Friday Night Smackdown. He has successfully defended the title 19 times and would be looking for new challengers.

Uso’s involvement in the storyline with Kingston and Woods may provide WWE a way to transition to him challenging the WWE Intercontinental Champion. Since moving to WWE Monday Night Raw, Uso has been showing that he can stand on his own without his family, and it would solidify his decision by potentially winning the title.

For Woods, his ongoing feud with Kaiser may lead to the return of both Kingston and Vinci in a few weeks. The company could decide to have a featured tag team match between The New Day(Kingston & Woods) and Imperium (Kaiser & Vinci) within the next few months.

While the storyline seems to point in this direction, WWE has plenty of options. Regardless, it doesn’t seem the company has a plan for everyone involved, which may lead to big matches heading into the “Road To WrestleMania.”

  • Jimmy Hart On Hulk Hogan Working The Royal Rumble: “I Think He Could Do Whatever He Wants To Do”

The 2024 WWE Royal Rumble is almost here, and fans have been speculating who could be making an appearance. Typically, with the annual event, WWE showcases wrestlers from the past and present to compete in a Royal Rumble match. Although it is unclear who will be a surprise entrant this year, it has led to people throwing out names they’d like to see involved, including Hulk Hogan.

WWE Hall of Famer Jimmy Hart recently appeared on the Cheap Heat with Peter Rosenberg to reflect on his career.

During the interview, Rosenberg asked Hart if Hogan could compete in the 2024 WWE Royal Rumble Match with his current health. Rosenberg noted that Hogan is not in shape to have a match but wondered about his willingness to be protected and thrown over the ropes safely in the match.

    Hulk Hogan Posing At Gym

“The Mouth Of The South”  shared that he believes Hogan could still compete.

“…For some reason, even when we are at the Beach Shop here, and these matches come on, the matches he used to be in, all of a sudden it’s like he’s Popeye The Sailor Man,” said Hart.

He continued, “…He Hulks up, and all of a sudden, I think he could do whatever he wants to do, but I’m telling you what, he could still throw those punches. He could also use a chair if he had to, but I think the fans wouldn’t really care. They would love to have him there, but they wouldn’t care if he could throw a punch or if he couldn’t just to be in the building with Hulkamania and do that; they would be so thrilled for him.”

Jimmy Hart On Hulk Hogan’s Current Health & Status

Although Hart believes Hogan could work the 2024 WWE Royal Rumble Match, the chances seem slim. The former WWE Champion has a history of health issues, which would make the decision difficult for WWE to allow him to compete.

That said, Hart shared that Hogan is in great shape and in a good place.

“…Hulk and I talk about every couple of days, and I’m always concerned about his health, but right now, he’s doing phenomenal and he works out religiously. Twice a day, believe this or not, twice a day, and if you looked at him, you wouldn’t think anything is wrong with him. He looks just how he used to look,” said Hart.

“The Mouth Of The South” also noted that Hogan is enjoying what WWE is doing and looks forward to doing something with the company again.

“…He loves the talent. He watches Roman Reigns. He watches Seth(Rollins). He loves Cody(Rhodes). He thinks that what Triple H is doing up there is phenomenal, and like I said, whenever they call us to do something, we are always there,” said Hart.

For now, it seems unlikely WWE will have Hogan in a match. However, as WWE WrestleMania 40 approaches in April, “Hulkamania” could make another return to celebrate the milestone achievement

  • “Are you guys paying attention?” – AJ Francis Ready for TNA debut at Hard to Kill

Former WWE superstar AJ Francis(FKA Top Dolla) has made his presence felt since the company let him go. WWE released him on September 21, 2023, a year after he returned for his second stint. Since he bid farewell to WWE for the second time, he has been exploring his options on the independent scene.

To fans’ surprise, Francis returned to Game Changer Wrestling on December 21, 2023, and attacked Joey Janela. This helped set up a featured match between the two for GCW Look At Me on January 26. However, Francis isn’t done exploring his options in wrestling.

While attending the 2024 Chees-It Citrus Bowl on January 1, he announced on Twitter that he would be at TNA Hard To Kill on January 13. Francis, alongside DJ Whoo Kid, shared that they will premiere a new music video of their song “WE OUT$IDE” live on the pay view. Although he isn’t involved in a match, Francis doesn’t rule out competing in a TNA ring.

When asked by a fan if he would compete for the company, Francis replied, “If the bag is right.”

TNA hopes to start their year with a bang, heading toward their upcoming PPV. The company decided last year to rebrand from Impact Wrestling to TNA, which has fans excited for their creative direction. As well as new title designs for their current champions, TNA President Scott D’Amore also teased a big signing will be made by Hard To Kill.

Francis’s announcement has increased fans’ interest in whether he’ll stick around with TNA.

    What’s Next For AJ Francis?

Francis is set to appear for GCW and TNA but is still looking to see what deal comes his way. The former WWE superstar is accepting bookings, which he shared on his Twitter account on September 22, 2023. From his standpoint, his impact is being felt online, and he is confident about what he brings to the table for any promotion.

The following day after announcing his TNA debut, Francis wrote on Twitter:

“I say I’m going to GCW, it does astronomical numbers online for them. I say I’m going to TNA, it does astronomical numbers online for them. Are you guys paying attention?”

Francis seems to be looking to take advantage of his free-agent status and show that he is still a superstar outside of WWE. If he continues his success, he should be in for a great year as an independent wrestler.

  • Dana White acknowledges the backlash surrounding CM Punk’s UFC pay

Dana White acknowledges the backlash surrounding CM Punk’s UFC pay

When CM Punk made his UFC debut, MMA fans and fighters were split on him competing for the company. Some have thought he deserved praise for attempting the sport, while others criticized UFC for giving Punk an opportunity. It seems the WWE superstar salary also caused fighters to be outraged.

The company is currently involved in an antitrust lawsuit, which has led to a deposition from UFC President Dana White to the public. It was also revealed that Punk got paid over $1 million for his debut fight against Mickey Gall at UFC 203 on September 10, 2016. When it was revealed how much Punk was getting paid, it created a backlash from other UFC fighters.

    White acknowledges the backlash

MMA Fighting’s Steven Marrocco was able to look at the document with White’s comments on the issue. The UFC President shared that fighters in the company speak among their peers about what they are making. This leads to fighters being upset with how pay is being distributed.

One of the examples he brought up was that UFC fighters were unhappy that Punk received over $1 million for his first professional fight.

    Marrocco transcribed the following quote.

“…We had some guy that was — that was paid a certain amount of money and never — oh, the professional wrestler that we brought in. Not Brock [Lesnar], the other one,” said White.

When the attorney handling the case replied with Punk’s name, the UFC President confirmed he was referring to him.

White added, “People went crazy when they saw what he got paid. … Even the women.”

How much did CM Punk make fighting for UFC?

Punk’s base salary for the time he was competing in the UFC was $500 thousand. It made him among the most-paid fighters on the UFC roster at the time.

However, he received more money for his fight with Gall due to other agreements in his contract. For example, if a pay-per-view he was a part of had over 200,000 buys, he would get an increase in his salary. UFC 203 had over 400,000 buys, which was part of fans’ interest in his fight with Gall. This is one of the ways he crossed over $1 million for his pro debut.

Although Punk wouldn’t stay with the UFC for too long, he made significant money for his time. Currently, his focus is back on wrestling, as he hopes to win the 2024 WWE Men’s Royal Rumble Match and the main event of WWE WrestleMania 40 in April.

  • Wrestle Kingdom 18 Takeaways: Okada Avenges Danielson Loss, New Champions, Nic Nemeth Debuts

New Japan Pro Wrestling has wrapped up one of their biggest annual event, NJPW Wrestle Kingdom 18 (#WK18) from the historic Tokyo Dome in Tokyo, Japan.

The show featured a stacked card, including the long-awaited rematch between Kazuchika Okada and Bryan Danielson.

Here are the four takeaways and highlights from NJPW Wrestle Kingdom 18.

Kazuchika Okada Avenged His Forbidden Door Loss To Bryan Danielson

Fans have been looking forward to Okada and Danielson’s rematch since their legendary first encounter at AEWxNJPW Forbidden Door on June 25, 2023. “The American Dragon” won a hard-fought contest against Okada by submission. Looking to avenge his loss, the NJPW superstar was motivated to get a big victory over Danielson at NJPW Wrestle Kingdom 18.

In the match, both talented wrestlers tried to outmaneuver the other in the co-main event. Danielson had control of the match early by working over Okada’s right arm. Although “The American Dragon” gave his opponent problems throughout the match, Okada was able to land the Rainmaker to avenge his loss.

After the match, both superstars respected each other by bowing their heads in the ring. The win for Okada may set up another match to end their rivalry once and for all.

David Finlay beat Moxley and Ospreay to become the first IWGP Global Heavyweight Champion, then got into it with Dolph Ziggler

David Finlay defeated Will Ospreay and Jon Moxley in a tense three-way match to become the inaugural IWGP Global Heavyweight Champion. The matchup saw all three competitors were able to have their moments, but the Finlay did just enough to get the victory.

The action took both in the ring and the crowd, as each wrestler did whatever it took to win. Weapons also got involved in the hard-hitting title match, including steel chairs and a table. One notable highlight in the match was Jon Moxley spiking Finlay on his head on Ospreay’s chest with a Pile Driver.

The turning point in the match was when BULLET CLUB War Dogs (Alex Coughlin & Gabe Kidd) attacked Ospreay and Moxley to help Finlay. The two AEW superstars overcame the assault, which eventually led to Finlay winning. The BULLET CLUB leader landed a Suplex into a knee to the face of Ospreay to become the champion.

While celebrating his victory, Finlay got into an altercation with former WWE superstar Nic Nemeth at ringside. This was seemingly done to set up a match between the two for the title.

Tetsuya Naito defeated his former ally to become the new IWGP Heavyweight Champion

The NJPW legend has concluded his journey to become an IWGP World Heavyweight Champion in the main event. Tetsuya Naito earned his opportunity to challenge SANADA for the title by winning last year’s G1 Climax. In a match months in the making, Naito earned a tough win over his former Los Ingobernables de Japon ally.

SANADA gave Naito everything he could handle as he tried to defend the IWGP World Heavyweight Champion for the fifth time successfully. However, Naito was able to end SANADA’s reign after landing Destino.

Before Naito could celebrate his win, he was attacked by EVIL and Dick Togo. SANADA would make the save and take out the “heels.” After taking out the House of Torture members, SANADA left the ring to give Naito his moment to celebrate with the NJPW fans.

Guerrillas Of Destiny won both IWGP/ NJPW Strong Tag Team titles

The tag title match was set after Bishamon (Hirooki Goto & YOSHI-HASHI) won the 2023 World Tag League. In the finals, they defeated Guerrillas Of Destiny (El Phantasmo & Hikuleo). After the win, Goto and HASHI gave G.O.D. a rematch at NJPW Wrestle Kingdom 18 in a winner-takes-all match for the IWGP & NJPW Strong Tag Team Championships.

This proved to be a mistake, as G.O.D. won both tag titles. Both teams went back and forth, as neither wanted to take the loss. Towards the end of the match, Phantasmo took out HASHI outside the ring with a Moonsault from the top rope. The match finished when Hikuleo landed Super Thunder Kiss 86 from the top rope on Goto for the pin.

After the match, both teams showed respect for each other, and G.O.D. celebrated with the crowd before returning backstage.

    Conclusion

NJPW Wrestle Kingdom 18 was a great card with plenty of incredible matches. Each match delivered exciting action and great moments, including seven title changes.

One of the matches that fans will discuss is the three-way match for the IWGP Global Heavyweight Championship. The match was fast-paced and delivered memorable moments, but it teased what could happen next with Nemeth.

The next notable event for the company will be the NJPW Battle In The Valley on January 13 at the San Jose Civic in San Jose, California. Currently, NJPW has announced who will compete on the card. Fans should expect match announcements to come soon.

  • 2023 Pro Wrestling Year In Review

2023 Pro Wrestling Year In Review

2023 was a wild year in the world of professional wrestling. The McMahon Family not being majority owners of WWE and CM Punk back in a WWE ring are the only examples needed to illustrate that point properly.

Really, the wildness goes deeper than that. AEW added a third show to their slate of programming in AEW Collision, Sting announced his retirement, The Rock returned to Smackdown, and Impact Wrestling announced a name change back to TNA.

What happened in the ring during 2023 has also been notable. Seth Rollins became a new WWE World Heavyweight Champion, MJF turned babyface, Gunther became the longest reigning WWE Intercontinental Champion in company history, Rhea Ripley dethroned Charlotte Flair to win the world championship, Roman Reigns added to his legacy and historic run with the WWE Universal Championship, and so much more.

What was the best of 2023 in pro wrestling? We got you covered. SEScoops correspondents Tyriece Simon, Samantha Schipman, Ella Jay and Bishal Roy discussed some of this year’s best, but with a twist. Instead of naming definitive winners, we’re presenting various viewpoints for each category from our expert panel. Let’s get into it:

Most Improved Wrestler Of The Year

Tyriece: Dominik Mysterio. It’s been great to see the transformation Dominik Mysterio had in WWE over the year. He went from tagging with his father, Rey Mysterio, to becoming a singles star that garners natural reactions from fans. His in-ring style has improved as well, having great matches with the likes of Dragon Lee, Sami Zayn, and his father. From where he was last year to now, he’s shown incredible growth as a character and a performer.

Bishal: Dominik Mysterio. ‘Dirty Dom’ has put in hard work and he is only getting better. Dominik Mysterio has had over 100 Matches for WWE this year across all brands which includes Raw, NXT, WWE PPVs, and NXT PPVs. He has put on some great matches against the likes of Seth Rollins, Sami Zayn, Wes Lee, Trick Williams, and many others. He also recently captured the NXT North American Champion. Plus, The Judgement Day have also got stronger better since Dom Dom joined. He has the potential to become the next big heel in the upcoming years.

Sam: Julia Hart – Julia Hart has come into her own since joining the House of Black. For many, she is the leader. Hart is undefeated in 2023 and became the third TBS Championship ever.

Ella: Tiffany Stratton. While she may only have two years of in-ring experience under her belt, Tiffany Stratton has already worked her way to the tippy top of WWE NXT. In addition to earning her very first championship this year, Stratton also received the opportunity to sharpen her skillset in an enticing feud against veteran performer, Becky Lynch, which led to a memorable Extreme Rules match at NXT No Mercy. Paired with her high-flying move set and budding self-confidence, Stratton seems destined to continue on this upward trajectory.

    Breakout Wrestler Of The Year

Sam: El Hijo Del Vikingo – Vikingo began competing in the U.S. in late 2022 and burst on to a national scene this year. The AAA Mega Champion has competed in AAA, AEW, ROH, GCW, DEFY. among others. He regularly stands out in his matches and has mind-blowing aerial moves.

Ella: LA Knight. After shedding his identity as Max Dupri, LA Knight emerged into his true form, becoming one of WWE’s most popular talents – both in audience reaction and merchandise sales. Though he has yet to win a championship on WWE’s main roster, Knight earned some notable victories this year, including a tag team win (alongside John Cena) at WWE Fastlane. Knight also holds the honor of winning the first-ever Slim Jim Battle Royal at SummerSlam. Now, the rising star finds himself in line to be the potential next challenger to Roman Reigns’ Undisputed WWE Universal Championship. And to that, I say: YEAH!

Bishal: Jey Uso. 2023 has been the year of Jey Uso. Given his rise to the top of, it has been an important year for him as a singles Star. He has risen above The Usos and he has got the fans behind his back. He started the year as tag team champions with brother Jimmy and they main-evented WrestleMania 39 in the best tag team match of the year. Jey Uso went on to have a remarkable match at Money in the Bank against Roman Reigns. After that he was on Raw as a Singles star and he has just grown in singles competition throughout the year. Heading into 2024 he will be feuding against his brother Jimmy Uso leading into next year’s WrestleMania 40 which could be yet another happening year for him.

Tyriece: Trinity. Some fans questioned what Trinity was going to be able to do without the WWE. She decided to go to Impact Wrestling and has been having a career resurgence. Her arrival in the company added more intrigue from wrestling fans and she’s been able to show her range as a wrestler. Heading into 2024 under TNA Wrestling, Trinity is looking to continue to be one of the company’s biggest stars.

    Tag Team Of The Year

Ella: Kevin Owens & Sami Zayn. Kevin Owens and Sami Zayn started the year as opponents of sorts, but upon Zayn’s breakaway from The Bloodline, the former tag team partners were finally reunited. Owens and Zayn’s highlight moment came in the main event of night one of WrestleMania 39, where they dethroned The Usos to become the Undisputed WWE Tag Team Champions. Following their massive title win, Owens and Zayn successfully defended the titles against the likes of Roman Reigns and Solo Sikoa, Imperium, Pretty Deadly, and The Judgment Day.

Tyriece Simon: Miracle Generation (Dustin Waller & Kylon King) – While they may not be on the radar for some wrestling fans, Miracle Generation have had a great year as a tag team on the independent wrestling scene. They’ve held the IWTV Independent Wrestling Tag Team Championship since February 26 and have successfully defended the title 23 times. While Miracle Generation may not have been the most popular team, their activity this year stands above many teams and fans should keep their eye on them in 2024.

Bishal: The Judgment Day. The current Undisputed WWE Tag Team Championships belong to the Judgement Day’s Finn Balor and Damian Priest. They have become such a formidable force of the red brand and their title run has been nothing but impressive. While they had some differences in the past, they overcame them and ever since had each other’s backs as a ‘family.’ That’s what matters the most.

Sam: Aussie Open. Although their run has put on hold twice due to injuries to Mark Davis, when healthy, Aussie Open is one of the best tag teams in the world. They started the year holding both the NJPW STRONG and IWGP Tag Team Championships simultaneously. They briefly held the ROH Tag Team titles when they unceremoniously dropped them to Better Than You Bay Bay at All In.

    Rivalry Of The Year

Bishal: Sami Zayn & Kevin Owens vs. The Bloodline. If you ask me, it has been a cinema-like storyline. The iconic rivalry will go down as one of the best in recent times and had the fans invested for months in the build-up. The rivalry has been full of a rollercoaster ride of emotions, brewing tension, and animosity. Zayn ultimately deciding to take down The Bloodline and joining hands with Kevin Owens will remain as a memorable moment in the coming times.

Sam: Christian Cage vs. Fatherless Wrestlers. Christian Cage is on the run of his career, which is saying something for someone who has been
wrestling for nearly 3 decades. As TNT Champion, he has terrorized wrestlers who have lost their fathers. The leader of The Patriarchy has taken Nick Wayne under his wing and renewed a feud with long-time (and fatherless) tag team partner, Adam Copeland.

Tyriece: Sami Zayn & Kevin Owens vs. The Bloodline. One of the elements that made The Bloodline storyline feel like “cinema” was their feud with Sami Zayn and Kevin Owens. It spanned from the Owens match with Roman Reigns at the Royal Rumble on January 28 until Owens and Zayn defeated Reigns and Sikoa at WWE Night Of Champions 2023 on May 25. The feud showcased months of great moments and matches that will be remembered.

Ella: Swerve Strickland vs. Adam Page – The rivalry between “Hangman” Adam Page and Swerve Strickland showcased an enthralling mix of drama, psychology (in-ring and character-wise), and of course, a vibrant display of physicality. While some critics believe this feud to be too graphic, specifically in regards to their Texas Death Match at AEW Full Gear, there’s no denying that this feud kept viewers deeply immersed in the storyline that unfolded before them. This was also the story that arguably catapulted Strickland to the next level, as he not only defeated a former AEW World Champion, but someone who is also one of the company’s founding players.

    Promotion/Booker Of The Year

Tyriece: WWE & Triple H. WWE were in some interesting times to the start the year, as Vince McMahon returned as the Chairman and the company would later merge with the UFC. That said, throughout the year WWE has done a great job elevating talent and creating new stars on the main roster and NXT. They’ve also delivered great moments on both TV and their premium live events. When it comes to being consistent in producing great content, WWE has shown why they are currently number one in wrestling.

Bishal: WWE & Triple H. It has to be him. Why not? Having The Bloodline continue to dominate and not only Roman Reigns, made the other members of the faction top stars individually. He got Gunther to make history with the WWE Intercontinental Championship, booked LA Knight like a hero, and finished off the year by doing the unthinkable in bringing in CM Punk. – Bishal Roy

Sam: Pro Wrestling Revolver & Sami Callihan. Sami Callihan’s Revolver promotion has had incredible shows all year long. They have a good balance of independent talents with signed talent from AEW and IMPACT. The inaugural Women’s Grand Prix tournament showcased 8 top women and had an all women’s broadcast team.

Ella: Shawn Michaels & NXT. As WWE’s Senior Vice President of Talent Development Creative, Shawn Michaels is tasked with spearheading WWE’s developmental territory of NXT. And while this brand may be developmental, it’s certainly managed to stand out. In addition to the compelling action surrounding the NXT Championship scene, Michaels has also established a meaningfulness to the mid-card, tag team, and women’s divisions as well. Every story feels like it matters, even if a championship isn’t involved. Michaels has also provided great care to NXT’s women’s division specifically – a division that is frequently overlooked or underserved in other promotions.

    Male Wrestler Of The Year

Bishal: Gunther. ‘The Ring General’ has had a fantastic year and the historic Intercontinental Championship reign for 550+ days is unparalleled. When it comes to in-ring performances, he put on some incredible matches, especially the title defense against Sheamus and Drew McIntyre at WrestleMania 39 and the epic rivalry with Chad Gable.

Tyriece: MJF. The AEW World Champion has had an incredible year, holding the title from the start of the year to the end. While being a central part of AEW TV and storylines, he’s also had great matches with Bryan Danielson, Adam Cole and Kenny Omega. While there may be other possible candidates, I think MJF’s body of work this year has earned him this honor.

Ella Jay: Cody Rhodes. While he may not have “finished the story” this year, Cody Rhodes’ return to WWE surely proved to be quite a success. After kicking off 2023 with a victory in the Men’s Royal Rumble, Rhodes boasted notable wins against the likes of Brock Lesnar, Solo Sikoa, Finn Balor, Damian Priest, and Dominik Mysterio; he also found himself on the winning team in a brutal Men’s WarGames match. In addition to this impressive resume in singles competition, Rhodes also explored the tag team scene this year, earning himself a brief run with the Undisputed WWE Tag Team Championships alongside Jey Uso. With over 100 matches wrestled this year, Rhodes not only exits this year as my male wrestler of the year, but also as WWE’s ironman. Yeet.

Samantha: Mike Bailey. Ever since Bailey returned to the U.S. in 2022, he has been making up for lost time. Speedball has wrestled more than 150 matches this year alone, with 10 of them coming WrestleMania weekend. Even with all of those matches, they always give 110% and always deliver fantastic matches.

    Female Wrestler Of The Year

Ella: Athena. Since adopting a more aggressive attitude at the tail-end of 2022, Athena has risen to become the arguable face of Ring of Honor. In addition to being the longest reigning ROH World Women’s Champion, Athena earned her way into the main event of not one, but two ROH pay-per-views this year – an achievement that is solely held by her. Amidst her ascent, Athena scored victories over the likes of Mercedes Martinez, Willow Nightingale, Allysin Kay, Angelina Love, and most recently, Billie Starkz – who challenged Athena for the title in the headlining contest at ROH Final Battle.

Bishal: Rhea Ripley. As she says, “‘Mami’ is always on top,” Rhea Ripley has continued to remain on top of the women’s division and remained a formidable opponent for the other female superstars in WWE. Since avenging her WrestleMania defeat against Charlotte Flair, she has been unstoppable and I believe she will finish the year on a high note.

Tyriece: Rhea Ripley – WWE gave Rhea Ripley the opportunity to be one of their biggest stars and she has not dropped the ball. She started the year winning the Royal Rumble and went on to defeat Charlotte Flair in a great match for the WWE Women’s World Championship at WrestleMania 39 on April 1. She’s held the title since then defeating the likes of Natalya, Raquel Rodriguez, and Zoey Stark throughout the year. She became a force in the company and looks to continue to be one of their biggest stars for the next few years.

Sam: Athena. No one comes close to what Athena has done in wrestling in 2023. For me, she is the best wrestler, regardless of gender. She is 44-0 in ROH-sanctioned matches. “The Fallen Goddess” made history by being the first Black woman to main event Dark, Rampage, and ROH TV. She is the first woman to main event an ROH pay-per-view and she did it twice.

    Match Of The Year

Tyriece: Roman Reigns vs. Sami Zayn (Elimination Chamber 2023). I absolutely love this match. From the story heading into the match to the action, Roman Reigns vs. Sami Zayn had everything you want in a wrestling match. Even though everyone kind of knew the result of the match beforehand, Zayn and Reigns did a great job making fans believe that a title change could’ve happened. It was a special match and one that still holds up months later.

Bishal: Kenny Omega Vs. Will Ospreay (NJPW Wrestle Kingdom 17). It was one of those unpredictable matches where the superstars pushed each other from bell to bell. The highly-cohesive talent pulled off some insane spots that kept the fans at the ed
ge of their seats. The storyline culminated in an impressive manner as Omega captured the title to attain revenge on Ospreay.

Sam: Athena vs. Willow Nightingale (ROH Death Before Dishonor). Athena and Nightingale made history as the first women to main event an ROH pay-per-view. This match was a love letter to independent women’s wrestling. The crowd was firmly and loudly behind each woman. Athena’s win solidified her reign as champion and to be the dominant force she’s become.

Ella: Ilja Dragunov vs. Dijak (NXT Battleground). As indicated by the stipulation, this match between Ilja Dragunov and Dijak proved to be an intense 16-minute battle filled with brutal physicality, a wide range of weaponry, and a true test of will. In the end, Dragunov (who is perhaps a glutton for punishment) emerged victorious after sending Dijak face-first into a steel chair, via his H-Bomb finisher.

  • Cody Rhodes touts his ‘gains’ ahead of the Royal Rumble

As the year ends, WWE superstar Cody Rhodes is looking towards his next big challenge. On the November 27 episode of Monday Night Raw, he declared he would enter the 2024 Royal Rumble Match on January 27, 2024, to challenge for a world title at WWE WrestleMania 40.

In preparation for the company’s next premium live event, Rhodes is in fantastic shape and motivated to win the Royal Rumble Match for the second time.

On November 26, “The American Nightmare” faced Shinsuke Nakamura in a Bull Rope Match at a WWE House Show event, where fans were impressed with his appearance. One Rhodes fan took a photo of him and tweeted that he looked “Jacked.”

The following day, the WWE superstar reposted the tweet and wrote, “Goals and gains and resolutions – I’m aiming to go back to back.”

After suffering an injury in 2022, Rhodes returned to the company at WWE Royal Rumble on January 28, 2023. He would win the Royal Rumble Match and face Roman Reigns for the Undisputed WWE Universal Championship at WWE WrestleMania 39 Night Two on April 2.

Unfortunately for “The American Nightmare,”  he was unsuccessful in defeating Reigns and has to rebound in the 2024 Royal Rumble Match. Reigns and his “Wise Man” Paul Heyman refuse to give Rhodes a rematch, which has given the “babyface” added motivation to win the battle royal.

His recent physical appearance is promising for Rhodes’ fans as he looks to stay healthy and attempt to become a two-time Royal Rumble Match winner.

The Obstacles Cody Rhodes Has To Face Heading Into The 2024 Royal Rumble Match

Although Rhodes looks incredible and is hungry to win the Royal Rumble Match, he has some obstacles. Besides having to eliminate 29 other wrestlers, he is also in an ongoing feud with Nakamura.

The former NXT Champion is also looking to win the Royal Rumble Match for the second time and ensure Rhodes doesn’t. Nakamura is similar to Rhodes, who won the Men’s Royal Rumble Match in 2018 but didn’t win the WWE Championship. Nakamura has shared that “The American Nightmare” ambition to win next year’s match inspired him to be victorious.

The Japanese superstar will try to stand in Rhodes’s way to ensure that he loses seemingly by any means.

Another star Rhodes has to look out for is CM Punk, who wants to win his first Royal Rumble Match. Punk announced on the December 11 episode of WWE Monday Night Raw that he would compete in next year’s match. The former WWE Champion has momentum and fans behind him, as he will also try to ruin Rhodes’s chances.

“The American Nightmare” has many obstacles standing in front of him. However, he is physically ready and confident he will be the main event at WrestleMania again.

  • Eddie Kingston Reflects On Competing In His First G1 Climax

Wrestling fans were surprised when New Japan Pro Wrestling announced on June 4 that Eddie Kingston would compete in the G1 Climax 33. It was Kingston’s first time participating in the tournament and a goal he wanted to accomplish for his career. Although he didn’t make it to the semi-finals, Kingston has shared that the experience was something he’ll never forget.

In an interview with Sports Illustrated Justin Barrasso, Kingston reflected on competing in his first G1 Climax. He also admitted to being nervous to the point of throwing up before his first match against Shingo Takagi at NJPW G1 Climax in July.

“I threw up before my match against Shingo,” said Kingston. He explained, “I always get nervous before matches, but I’ve never been that nervous. So I got to the ring, talked to myself, and said, ‘Yup, I’m in the G1.’ That helped. Then Shingo hit me really hard with the first forearm, and I knew I was ready.”

The NJPW Strong Champion would win four matches to earn eight points in the G1 Climax 33. Kingston was eliminated from the tournament after losing to David Finlay.

Despite not winning, Kingston enjoyed traveling to Japan and competing in famous venues like the Sumo Hall.

“Walking through the curtain at Sumo Hall, and I’ve seen so many great matches there, like the first G1 Finals between Keiji Mutoh and Masahiro Chono, I couldn’t believe I was there,” said Kingston. He added, “There’s a picture of me with my mouth open, looking around in astonishment, at Sumo Hall.”

Eddie Kingston On NJPW Locker Room Environment

In the interview, Kingston also spoke highly of the NJPW locker room. The NJPW Strong Champion expressed that he had a great time being around roster members and went as far as to say that it was the best locker room he’d been a part of.

“I had a lot of good guys around me in Japan. The New Japan locker room is the best locker room I’ve ever been part of,” said Kingston. He continued, “They showed me around, and I tried everything. I don’t like fish, but I did in Japan. I loved it there.”

It’s unclear when Kingston will return to Japan for NJPW. He’s competing in AEW’s Continental Classic, putting the NJPW Strong and Ring Of Honor World Championship on the line for the tournament winner. Kingston is currently scheduled to face Bryan Danielson in the Blue League finals at Wednesday’s Dynamite.

If he can make it through as NJPW Strong Champion, he could have a match at NJPW Wrestle Kingdom 18 on January 4, 2024. An opportunity to potentially return to Japan and compete in the Tokyo Dome would be another career highlight for the “Mad King.”

  • Trish Stratus ‘So Excited’ To Wrestle Again After Most Active Year Since 2006

This year, Trish Stratus made her in-ring return to WWE after more than three years of inactivity. During her comeback, she showed fans that she could still compete with current talent on the roster and still had goals in wrestling. Stratus seemingly enjoyed her return and is looking to compete again next year.

On December 20, the WWE Hall of Famer appeared on Grown Ass Women TV with Mickie James, Lisa Marie Varon (Victoria), and SoCal Val to share that she hopes to step back into the ring in 2024.

    Trish Stratus planning WWE return

Prior to this year, Stratus was not an active WWE Superstar since 2019, when she wrestled two matches.

    In 2023, Stratus wrestled ten matches – her most active year since 2006. Since ’06, she’s wrestled in 2008, 2009, 2011, 2018 and 2019. (Stats via Cagematch.net)

After an active year, Stratus delivered the great news that she enjoyed her WWE experience this year and she hopes to get back in the ring very soon.

“Thank you to all my Stratospherians, like, for coming out, supporting, and it was so fun when I went, especially going back to wrestling and tapping into like ‘If you know you know moments’ and like having that, like, ‘Oh, I loved when she did that back in the day,’ and so that was fun and I look forward to doing that again next year. I’m so excited,” said Stratus.

Stratus had her comeback match teaming with Lita and Becky Lynch to defeat Damage CTRL (Bayley, Dakota Kai & IYO SKY) in a Six-Women Tag Team Match at WWE WrestleMania 39 on April 1. Some fans expected that she would be done after the event, but she ended up sticking around for five more months.

Stratus ended her return feuding with Lynch, culminating in losing a Steel Cage Match at WWE Payback on September 2.

How Could WWE Bring Back Trish Stratus in 2024?

While the storyline with Lynch is seemingly over, Stratus does have unfinished business in WWE.

Fans may recall that her former protégé, Zoey Stark, took her out after the match. Starks landed her signature Z-360 on Stratus, ending their alliance. WWE has an opportunity to follow up on Stark’s rebellion by having the WWE Hall of Famer feud with her.

Another possibility to bring back Stratus is for the WWE Royal Rumble on January 24, 2024. She could be a surprise entrant in the 2024 Women’s Royal Rumble Match, which fans would be thankful for.

There are several other ways WWE could reintroduce her, and it’s unclear if she is currently in the immediate creative plans. Regardless, she is excited to have another run in the company and show that she can still compete with today’s roster.
