  • Britt Baker Gets Flak For Naming Sasha Banks Her Dream Opponent

Britt Baker Gets Flak For Naming Sasha Banks Her Dream Opponent

Britt Baker got slammed by fans online when she said that Sasha Banks is her dream opponent.

In a recent interview, Baker was asked who she would like to face in the ring. Since Banks has been trending, Baker said she would love to face her.

“Since it’s a pretty hot topic right now, I’m going to say Sasha Banks.… I think she is one of the top draws in all of WWE. She’s such a superstar, she’s such a good wrestler. She’s definitely somebody that I would love to wrestle,” Baker said.

Speaking to KXST-AM The Playmakers, Baker revealed that she got a lot of criticism from fans for wanting to face Banks (as transcribed by SEScoops):

“I literally answered an interview question. I didn’t call Sasha Banks out, I didn’t say, ‘Hey, this match needs to happen.’ I was just asked a question and I gave an answer,” Baker explained.

“They said what’s a cool dream match that you would like to have and Sasha is one of my favorite wrestlers. It wasn’t me challenging her, or challenging WWE. All I did was just say ‘Hey this is a cool dream match.’

“Her fans and the WWE fans and even just some wrestling fans, in general, did not like that and I don’t even think they read the whole interview. They read the clickbait and they run with it. They create such a nasty narrative when they don’t even know what they’re talking about and it is so frustrating.

“Because in my position, I am not going to respond to @John515 that has 19 followers. But I want to respond to John with 19 followers and tell him to shut the hell up, you don’t even know what you’re talking about!” Baker clarified.

Ironically, in that same interview, Britt Baker talked about the rampant toxic negativity on social media. She spoke about the cyberbullying that celebrities have to face online, to the point where she believes that some people just go to Twitter so that they can say something nasty and mean.

“I think people just go on to Twitter just to be heard in a negative way. They just want to say something nasty and hateful and mean, so they will go on to Twitter for literally no [other] reason and they just say it and make sure they tag you in it, too,” Baker said.

Baker also talked about the impact this has on celebs and how it can have serious real-world consequences, like someone taking their life. You can read the excerpt here.

Bryan Danielson Eyeing Dream Matches For Forbidden Door PPV

One of the most anticipated wrestling shows happening this summer will be the June 26th Forbidden Door pay-per-view, which will pit top superstars from AEW against top superstars from NJPW in a number of dream matches that is sure to excite both fanbases.

Bryan Danielson told Sports Illustrated that he is ecstatic about the marquee event, as getting to face some of Japan’s greatest professional wrestlers has been on his bucket list since his WWE days. When the American Dragon was asked about who he specifically hopes to face at Forbidden Door, he revealed the following:

“There are a ton of guys I’d like to wrestle. You mentioned Okada, and that’s a match I really want. I would love to wrestle Okada. But in the back of my mind, I’m thinking about Zack Sabre Jr. and wrestling him to see who is the best technical wrestler in the world. We have two very different styles of technical wrestling.”

Danielson and ZSJ have crossed-paths before back in 2008, an encounter he remembers very well.

“We wrestled in 2008, and he was just a kid, but I was super impressed with him then. He’s grown into this amazing wrestler, and I don’t ever recall seeing anyone wrestle with his technique.”

The Blackpool Combat Club member wouldn’t stop there. He would go on to name Tomohiro Ishii, Shingo Takagi, KENTA, Katsuyori Shibata, and the great Hiroshi Tanahashi as potential opponents, but ends by saying that he will take on whoever AEW President Tony Khan books him to face.

“I’m open to whoever Tony [Khan] and New Japan want me to go up against.”

Danielson will team with Eddie Kingston, Jon Moxley, Santana, and Ortiz to battle Chris Jericho and the rest of the Jericho Appreciation Society at this weekend’s Double or Nothing pay-per-view in Las Vegas.

AEW Reveals Custom TNT Championship For Scorpio Sky (Video)

As expected, AEW has given Scorpio Sky a new custom version of the TNT Championship.

During the May 25 episode of Dynamite, Dan Lambert announced that Sky’s TNT gold would be getting a makeover. This was in response to Sammy Guevara and Frankie Kazarian destroying Sky’s original championship.

On the May 27 episode of Rampage, the custom gold was revealed and it was indeed in the purple and gold LA Lakers-inspired colors:

Sammy, Tay Conti, and Kazarian interrupted the title presentation with a live feed of their invasion of American Top Team. They destroyed a trophy mantle and stole UFC Titles.

A mixed tag team match was then announced for Double or Nothing. It’ll be Sammy Guevara, Tay Conti, and Frankie Kazarian vs. Scorpio Sky, Ethan Page, and Paige VanZant.

If Team Sammy loses, then Guevara can never challenge for the TNT Title again.

Tony Khan proudly discussed AEW’s continuous success in Las Vegas in a recent pre-pay-per-view media call.

This year, Double or Nothing will return to Vegas for the first time since the first AEW event in 2019. Interest is at an all-time high in the ‘Sin City.’

AEW is above the $1,000,000 mark in ticket sales for their pay-per-view return to Las Vegas.

Over $1.1 Million In Tickets For DON 2022

During the pre-AEW Double or Nothing 2022 media call, AEW Owner Tony Khan said,

“This is the biggest live attendance we’ve ever had. It’s a great barometer in pro wrestling. The live fans in the arena set the pace for fans all over the world.

“Obviously, with their reactions in the arena to people they see in the ring, but also how they spend their money and how they make their presence felt at the show.

“For us to set our attendance record already with well over a million dollars, I think over $1.1 million in tickets sold to Sunday’s pay-per-view, that is an amazing milestone for us and I also believe it’s indicative of huge interest in Double or Nothing 2022.”

  • Update On Colt Cabana’s Status With AEW-ROH

Update On Colt Cabana’s Status With AEW-ROH

It looks like Colt Cabana will have a strong presence in Ring of Honor.

Dave Meltzer of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter is reporting that Colt has signed a new deal with AEW.

While Colt has re-upped with AEW, he’s expected to play a role in Tony Khan’s vision for ROH.

Meltzer notes that Colt’s involvement with ROH could very well be due to his sour relationship with CM Punk.

Colt Cabana and Punk used to be close friends but a lawsuit changed that.

Colt believed that Punk owed him money for lawyer fees stemming from a lawsuit filed by WWE doctor Chris Amann.

Punk appeared on Colt’s podcast and accused WWE doctors of missing his staph infection and telling him to use Z-Paks whenever he had an ailment.

Ultimately, CM Punk won the civil trial in the defamation lawsuit.

Colt ended up suing Punk for breach of contract. The case would soon be dropped.

Many have suspected that Colt’s lack of TV time as a late is due to the situation with Punk. With that said, it appears AEW still sees value in having Colt Cabana around.

Charlotte Flair And Andrade El Idolo Gearing Up For Wedding

Charlotte Flair has been out of action indefinitely since WrestleMania Backlash. The company announced that she sustained injuries and she needs time off to recover.

At the event, Flair defended the SmackDown Women’s Championship against Ronda Rousey in an “I Quit” Match in a losing effort.

Flair is actually taking time off of WWE to prepare for her wedding with AEW star Andrade El Idolo. The two have been dating since February 2019 when they were both with WWE. They announced their engagement a year later on January 1, 2020.

Looks like the couple is gearing up for the wedding as Flair posted photos on Instagram which show a gathering of family and friends. Fellow wrestlers such as Finn Balor, Nia Jax, and Apollo Crews are also seen. She also shared a picture with popular Mexican makeup artist Pepe Gutierrez.

Interestingly, the location added for the photo is Hacienda Mi Ranchito, which is a wedding venue in Ciudad Lerdo, Mexico.

Last month, Flair confirmed in an interview with Ariel Helwani that she is getting married to her fiancé this summer in Mexico.

It wouldn’t be too surprising if Charlotte Flair and Andrade announce something about a wedding soon.

As for her goals inside the wrestling ring, Flair recently said that she wants to surpass her father’s record for most world title reigns. More on that here.

  • Update On Kenny Omega’s Double Or Nothing Status

Update On Kenny Omega’s Double Or Nothing Status

Former AEW World Heavyweight Champion Kenny Omega hasn’t been seen on AEW TV for months.

On May 18, it was reported that Omega was present backstage at AEW TV tapings for some weeks, and even produced some women’s matches.

Some took this as a sign that Omega could be making his return to the ring soon. A further report stated that Omega’s return date is nowhere near close to being set.

Now, Dave Meltzer in the Wrestling Observer Newsletter has provided an update on his health.

According to the report, the travel to the tapings was too early for the healing needed for Omega’s injuries.

Omega has said that he is able to train parts of his body that are healthy and is pushing himself hard every week.

As for the other parts of his body, the healing is said to be “slow.”

Furthermore, Omega has resigned to the fact that physically, he will never be 100%.

Owing to all of this, Omega will not be able to recover in time to appear at Double or Nothing in Las Vegas. He is okay with missing the May 29 event.

Kenny Omega’s last appearance on AEW programming was at Dynamite after Full Gear, where he had just lost his world title to Hangman Page. He also informed The Young Bucks and Adam Cole of The Elite that he will take some time off, asking The Young Bucks to “hold down the fort”.

  • Bryan Danielson On How William Regal Helped Him During His Retirement

Bryan Danielson On How William Regal Helped Him During His Retirement

William Regal is not only a wrestling coach for Bryan Danielson but a mentor in life as well. It’s only fitting that the two are now getting to share the screen alongside members of the Blackpool Combat Club. Though according to Bryan, he never thought it would be possible because he believed WWE would not let someone like Regal go.

The former world champion recently spoke to WrestleRant Radio. During the talk, he was asked if he ever envisioned forming a team with William Regal in AEW like he has. Bryan said that he never thought it would be possible. He then told a story about how the legendary wrestler helped him during his retirement when WWE made him the General Manager of SmackDown in 2016:

“To be fair, I never thought WWE would let him go. Because he is such a valuable commodity and all the talent loves him. Right? He’s helped a lot of talent more than just like in-ring wrestling. I’ll give you an example for me specifically, when I was forced to retire. Then they brought me in as GM.” recalled Bryan Danielson,

He continued, “I was actually relatively settled at ‘Okay, I get it, I should probably retire,’ They had wanted me to retire. But then when they brought me in as the GM. All of a sudden now I’m forced to be around wrestling. It was driving me crazy. It was making me ready to quit. Regal was the one who talked me off the ledge. He is always great with advice. He has a lot of perspective, given that he has been in wrestling since the mid-80s.”

She suffered the injury during an AEW Dark: Elevation taping. Hirsch ended up tearing her ACL after landing awkwardly off a moonsault.

Despite the circumstances, she appears to be in good spirits.

“On April 5th, during AEW Dark Elevation, I suffered an injury. After landing on my feet from a moonsault, I tore my ACL. Today I was finally able to get my surgery.

“Thank you to everyone for the support. I promise to come back an improved, leaner, meaner more Legit Athlete.”

It’s a rough situation for Leyla Hirsch, who signed with AEW back in March 2021.

She was in the midst of a new phase in her character. She turned heel and had amassed an impressive 12-3 record in 2022.

We wish Leyla Hirsch a full and speedy recovery.

Bryan Danielson Comments on Freak Accident During AEW Rampage Taping

All Elite Wrestling star Bryan Danielson jokes that old age caused him to fall between the ring and ramp.

Danielson worried fans when he accidentally hurt himself during a post-match altercation at AEW Rampage on May 20 with the Jericho Appreciation Society. It took several minutes for AEW staff to help free his leg from between the ring and ramp.

Thankfully, it doesn’t seem like he will be out of action.

Wrestlerant’s Graham Matthews interviewed Danielson and asked for an update about his injury.

The AEW star joked that he’s getting clumsy as he gets older.

“…I laugh at myself because it was my birthday yesterday. I just turned 41, and I’m just like, I’m just this old man who falls into these cracks, and I can’t get out,” said Danielson.

He joked that he felt like he was Steve Urkel in that moment.

“My ankle and just below my knee are a little bit swollen. You know what I mean, but it’s interesting my life I like physical things.

“Right so even when I’m not wrestling, I like to do jiu-jitsu or kickboxing or hiking or whatever it is you know what I mean and so I’m kind of used to things being swollen.

“I’ll be at Dynamite on Wednesday and I’ll have to get the trainer to check on it, just to make sure everything’s okay.”

Will Bryan Danielson Compete at Double or Nothing?

Danielson hasn’t shared if trainers believe he should not compete at Double or Nothing on May. 29.

That interview was done before he said he would get a check-up from trainers at AEW Dynamite on May. 25.

AEW is still advertising that Danielson will team with his faction, the Blackpool Combat Club, alongside Eddie Kingston, Santana, and Ortiz to challenge The Jericho Appreciation Society this Sunday.

The company also announced that he would face Matt Sydal on a live episode of AEW Rampage on May 27.

The AEW star revealed that he laughed about it with Eddie Kingston and Jon Moxley after the incident.

“…I was laughing afterward with Eddie Kingston and Mox. This would have never happened to me at 28. I would have been very aware of my surroundings, but this old clumsy man who slips in things,” said Danielson.

Danielson seems to be in good spirits and ready to compete. Hopefully, the swelling will subside before he clashes with the Jericho Appreciation Society at Double or Nothing.

Renee Paquette Wishes Jon Moxley Would Stop Licking Opponents’ Blood

Renee Paquette really wishes her husband Jon Moxley would stop licking opponents’ blood during matches.

Paquette recently took to her podcast, “The Sessions,” and talked about her husband’s tendency to lick the blood of his opponents during their matches. This was in response to being asked what she’d like for Moxley to stop doing in the ring the most.

The former WWE broadcaster explained she doesn’t think the spot is necessary.

“Licking people’s blood. I hate it. I hate it. I hate it. I don’t get it. I hate it. That definitely ranks really, really high for me. Anytime he does it, I’m like, why?

“What is happening? Why are you doing this? I don’t think it’s necessary. That would be number one for me. I hate it.

“I also don’t like slap spots, like a slap to the head I could do without. I actually don’t like spots with chairs either.”

In a follow up question, Paquette was asked if she gets turned off to kiss Moxley later after a match in which he has licked an opponent’s blood. But Paquette doesn’t pay it too much attention in that regard.

“I actually don’t think about that at all. You would think I would think that, but at that point, I’m like, eh, some time has passed. I don’t really think about it. I worry more about the long term effects.

Moxley’s next big match will take place for All Elite Wrestling (AEW) at the Double or Nothing pay-per-view (PPV).

He’ll team up with Eddie Kingston, Santana, Ortiz, and Daniel Bryan to take on The Jericho Appreciation Society (Chris Jericho, Matt Menard, Angelo Parker, Daniel Garcia, and Jake Hager) in a Anarchy in the Arena match.

Last-Minute Match Possibly Being Added To AEW Double Or Nothing

It looks like more than one unannounced match has been listed internally for AEW Double or Nothing.

Earlier this week, Dave Meltzer of Wrestling Observer reported that Sammy Guevara and Tay Conti vs. Scorpio Sky or Ethan Page and Paige VanZant was “tentatively planned” for the PPV.

It seems like there’s another match that could be added to the show late.

Fightful is now reporting that Darby Allin vs. Kyle O’Reilly has been discussed as a possible last-minute addition.

It would make sense given that Kyle injured Sting in storyline by placing his ankle through a chair and crushing it with a knee off the top turnbuckle.

Darby recently promised that he will have a presence at Double or Nothing:

AEW wrestler Ricky Starks didn’t hold back during an interaction with a fan at this week’s edition of Dynamite.

Competing in a three-way match this week, Starks faced Jungle Boy and Swerve Strickland in a match the latter won.

During one spot, Starks misses the majority of a stomp onto Strickland from the apron, and a fan responds saying “you missed him.”

The irate Starks fired back, saying “yeah, and your daddy should’ve missed you when he came you punk ass b*tch.”

    Ricky Starks in AEW

Starks made his debut for AEW in June 2020, and immediately made an impression upon his arrival.

Unsuccessfully challenging for the TNT Championship, held at the time by Cody Rhodes, Starks was signed to a deal by Tony Khan shortly after.

At July 2021’s Fyter Fest, Starks would capture the FTW Championship from Brian Cage, marking his first title in AEW, though it is not an officially sanctioned title.

Starks has had seven successful title defenses since winning the title, against the likes of Cage, Strickland, Matt Sydal, and others.

Since September 2021, Starks has also worked as part of the commentary team for AEW Rampage, replacing Mark Henry.

AEW Double or Nothing Main Event Won’t Collide With NBA Eastern Conference Finals

The NBA playoffs have been crushing wrestling in the TV ratings and many have feared it could negatively impact AEW Double or Nothing.

The PPV event is set for May 29. This Friday, the Boston Celtics will take on the Miami Heat in game 6 of the Eastern Conference Finals.

If Miami wins, the series will go to game 7 on the same night as Double or Nothing.

This is a high-stakes series as the winner will advance to the NBA Finals.

    DoN Headliner Safe From NBA

AEW President Tony Khan has squashed any concern that the Double or Nothing main event could start while a potential game 7 of the NBA Eastern Conference Finals is ongoing.

During an appearance on the AEW Unrestricted podcast, Khan confirmed that if there is a game 7, he will not run the world title match between Hangman Adam Page and CM Punk until it’s over.

“I promise that Hangman Page versus CM Punk for the world championship is not going to go to the ring until after game seven, if there is a game seven.

“So it leaves it open even for those diehard fans of those teams if there is a Heat-Celtics game seven.

“I promise just like Bob Arum did, another promoter here in Vegas, said that Pacquiao-Bradley was not going to go to the ring.

I promise we’ll hold it back because we’ve planned ahead in case there was a game seven not knowing who it would be.

“But it might not even happen, but if it does, we’re prepared.”

AEW Set To Unveil Custom Championship On Rampage

The time has arrived for a fresh version of an AEW Title

During the May 25 episode of Dynamite, it was announced by Dan Lambert that Scorpio Sky will be receiving his brand new custom TNT Championship.

The custom title belt will be unveiled on the May 27 episode of Rampage.

Sky is the reigning TNT titleholder but his gold was destroyed by Sammy Guevara and Frankie Kazarian. Sky turned his back on Kazarian at the conclusion of the May 13 episode of Rampage.

This led to Kazarian’s alliance with Sammy and Tay Conti.

The custom championship had been expected ever since the TNT Title was destroyed.

Perhaps Sky will be getting a purple and gold spin on the championship given he’s a huge LA Lakers fan.

Evil Uno Opens Up About Stu Grayson’s AEW Release

Evil Uno and Stu Grayson have been a tag team for most of their careers. The duo were brought in by AEW in 2019 together as well. After Grayson’s AEW’s release, it’s the first time in many years when the two are not competing for the same promotion. The Dark Order member opened up about this change during his interview with NBC Sports Boston. He revealed how he is feeling about entering this new phase of his career.

Evil Uno admitted that it’s a little weird being without his friend. Though he mentioned that Grayson’s release was not a surprise for him. He claimed it was a mutual decision:

“It’s a little weird … You know, he’s my friend so I have an understanding of what he was going through, It’s not like it took me by surprise, this was a mutual decision [with AEW]. He wanted something out of his contract and they did not have that for him and he wasn’t going to continue if it wasn’t for that. And he was fine walking away, and he’s not upset in any way.”

    Evil Uno and Stu Grayson

Evil Uno mentioned how he has navigated most of his wrestling career with Stu Grayson. There was a brief period in 2010 when they weren’t together but this time, he has to adjust to it while being featured on national television.

Speaking about the future of his former tag team partner, the AEW star said that he is pretty sure Stu will do well wherever he lands:

“I’m sure Stu, wherever he does land, will do fantastic as well because he’s truthfully one of the best wrestlers probably in the world and I think most people are just unaware of it.”

Stu Grayson and Evil Uno had been teaming together since early 2000. The two were known as Super Smash Brothers in the independent circuit. They were some of the first names to be brought on board by AEW when the company launched in 2019.

Sting Pulled From Meet And Greet Before Double Or Nothing

Sting has been pulled from a scheduled meet and greet appearance in Las Vegas ahead of the Double Or Nothing PPV this Sunday.

The announcement was made by the company’s Twitter account. They noted that The Icon will miss the scheduled appearance because he ‘has not been cleared to travel’

“Due to injury last week, @Sting has not been cleared to travel & will unfortunately not be at this Saturday’s #AEWDoN Fan Fest Meet & Greets. For fans who purchased tickets to see #TheIcon, Watch your inbox for information on refunds”

Last week’s episode of Dynamite saw Sting receiving a beatdown from The Undisputed Elite. After a superkick from The Young Bucks, Kyle O’Reilly also smashed his ankle.

There is no word on the severity of the wrestling veteran’s injury. It’s unknown if the angle on Dynamite was designed to write him off of AEW programming for some time.

Sting made his AEW debut in December 2020. He aligned himself with Darby Allin and the two have been partners ever since.

The 63-year-old has since returned to the ring. He has wrestled 9 matches in 2 years, all of which he has won. Though neither Allin nor the former WCW champion is booked for a match at Double or Nothing this year.

Being a celebrity comes with many downsides. One such negative aspect is all the hateful comments and threats they receive online. Britt Baker believes there are people who just come online so they spread the negativity.

The former AEW women’s champion recently had an interview with Forbs. She talked about things such as Sasha Banks walking out of WWE and more.

Speaking about the negativity celebrities have to face online, Baker said that many people go to Twitter just so they can say something nasty and mean:

“I think people just go on to Twitter just to be heard in a negative way. They just want to say something nasty and hateful and mean, so they will go on to Twitter for literally no [other] reason and they just say it and make sure they tag you in it, too.”

    ‘It’s Really, Really Horrible’

Britt Baker recalled the suicide of Japanese wrestler Hana Kimura because of cyberbullying. She mentioned how the environment online can sometimes be really toxic:

“We’ve had people in the industry kill themselves over cyberbullying, and you’d think that that would be enough for people to wake up. Keep your mean thoughts to yourself,

You know, the body-shaming and telling me I should go kill myself because I beat so and so in a match, it’s just really, really horrible and toxic.”

Apart from this, Baker discussed her relationship with Adam Cole and how the two have not interacted much on-screen. She claimed that they are on the top of their respective divisions without being paired and this makes them a true power couple.

CM Punk has wrestled some impressive matches since joining AEW in August last year. He has now revealed which one of them has been his favorite so far.

The Straight Edge Star recently had an interview with ESPN’s Marc Raimondi. The wrestling journalist shared a highlight from that chat on Twitter.

According to Raimondi, Punk told him that his match with Dax Hardwood gave him a unique feeling. It was the most perfect match he has had:

“That’s the dragon I’m now chasing. I’m trying to replicate that feeling I had after that match. I never, ever say this, but to me that was the most perfect match I’ve probably ever had.”

    CM Punk vs Dax Harwood

CM Punk faced Dax Harwood during the March 23 episode of AEW Dynamite earlier this year. It was the opening match of the night.

The ending of the match that lasted almost 13 minutes saw Hardwood reversing a GTS attempt. The FTR member then managed to lock his opponent into a sharpshooter.

However, Punk countered and he rolled over to transition it into Anaconda Vice. Having targeted Dax’s arm with the same move earlier in the match as well, CM Punk managed to get the win with the submission.

NJPW Tag Team Invades AEW Dynamite (Video)

Former IWGP Tag Team Champions have invaded AEW.

During the May 25 episode of Dynamite, FTR put the ROH Tag Team Championships up for grabs against Roppongi Vice. The match did not end with a decisive winner.

That’s because Jeff Cobb and Great-O-Khan of the United Empire interfered and attacked both teams. The referee waved off the match but NJPW’s fierce tag team wasn’t done.

Cobb powerbombed Dax Harwood through a table, while Great-O-Khan slammed Trent Beretta through a table with the Iron Claw slam.

By the end of the chaos, the United Empire members held up the ROH Tag Team Titles.

This is the first true hint at what could be in store for the AEWxNJPW Forbidden Door PPV set for June 26.

AEW Recently Had Talks With Killer Kross (Report)

AEW reportedly tried to have Killer Kross appear on Dynamite but it didn’t pan out.

The promotion has been running an in-depth storyline involving MJF and his former bodyguard Wardlow.

On the May 4 episode of Dynamite, MJF had a mystery opponent for Wardlow. It ended up being W. Morrissey of IMPACT Wrestling.

Wardlow ultimately picked up the win.

    Failed Talks

Fightful is reporting that AEW initially wanted that spot to be for Killer Kross.

The report notes that the two sides couldn’t come to an agreement. It’s been said that Kross expressed concern over the creative direction.

His main issue was the feeling that debuting in the promotion without his wife, Scarlett Bordeaux, would’ve been no different than how he was treated on WWE’s main roster.

The report also mentions that the two sides are still open to doing business down the line.

  • Tony Khan on the Importance Of Hardcore Wrestling Fans & How They Helped Grow AEW

Tony Khan on the Importance Of Hardcore Wrestling Fans & How They Helped Grow AEW

This weekend AEW will invade the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas Nevada for their fourth-ever Double or Nothing pay-per-view.

Company president Tony Khan recently joined Sports Media with Richard Deitsch to hype up the annual event, as well as discuss a number of interesting topics regarding AEW’s third year in business.

Khan began by addressing the constant criticism of WWE Hall of Famer and former WCW president Eric Bischoff, who believes that AEW needs to do a better job at catering to the casual fan. Khan believes that Bischoff has a point, but thinks it is just as important to remember the hardcore fan.

“I think Eric’s point that you want to have a lot of fans is also valid. But my thoughts on it are – and you know this, some of this might relate to Eric’s experiences. But certainly, there were a lot of things that happened with the history of WCW, and the rise of WCW and then what became of it, that I think it’s really important to remember the hardcore fan.”

    Hardcore Fans Have Helped AEW

On the subject of the hardcore fan Khan explains how vital they have been to AEW’s business growth, crediting their word-of-mouth and engagement with one another as a key reason he likes to make a product suitable for them.

“I think another great thing about the hardcore fan is the word of mouth. From when I started in high school, wrestling was not cool when I first got into high school as a function of what was happening with the world of wrestling. And before it had a chance to get really hot as a business, I made a few fans right off the bat as a virus spreading fan, just by being a hardcore, that would rope other people into watching wrestling with me.”

“And if you get some social people, what you can get is really good word of mouth, just like in the film industry and with TV shows, in which we are a TV show. So I think you can grow your TV show by having a big hardcore base that you service and support, but also by trying to spread the word and trying to not only spread the word of yourself and get out and engage with fans, but hopefully have the fans engaging with other fans.”

Ending his rant…Khan states that catering to all fans are important, especially for a young company, but does believe that turning those casuals into hardcores is the ultimate goal.

“And I think in general, all the fans are important, but you have to remember, again, you know, everybody has a beginning. So you want to make fans from the beginning and then hopefully try to make them into hardcore fans. I mean, the more hardcore fan somebody is, that’s good, right?”
