Tony Khan Teases New Look For AEW Dynamite With Move To TBS

AEW Dynamite is moving to TBS and with it may come a new look.

Dynamite is transitioning from TNT to TBS beginning on Jan. 5, 2022. AEW Rampage will remain on TNT and the network will also be receiving special live events here and there.

Now that Dynamite is moving to a new channel, albeit under the same umbrella, it’s left many wondering if there will be a new look.

    Changes To AEW Dynamite?

AEW boss Tony Khan spoke to media members during a conference call. Khan revealed that he might be making changes to the presentation of Dynamite next year.

“The great wrestling and the great wrestlers and what people love about Dynamite, for the most part, I think that’s all going to be the same. But the look of the show, you know we may do some tweaks in presentation and it’ll be fun.

“We’ll do our best and if you don’t like it, then we’ll go back to what we have [laughs]. I think we’re gonna look at the presentation of the show going into TBS but the wrestling, the wrestlers, all the stuff you love about the show, for the most part, I think will be the same.

“Hey, if I mess with the look of the show and you don’t like it I can always go back [laughs].”

The finals of the TBS Women’s Championship tournament will take place on Jan. 5. Jade Cargill, Thunder Rosa, and Ruby Soho have emerged as favorites to win the tourney.

  • Tony Khan AEW Media Call Highlights (11/11/21)

Tony Khan AEW Media Call Highlights (11/11/21)

All Elite Wrestling President Tony Khan participated in a media call on Thursday afternoon to promote Saturday’s AEW Full Gear pay-per-view.

Here are some highlights from the Q&A. The questions and answers have been edited for brevity and clarity.

Q: Full Gear has a stacked card with 10 matches. Is this the ideal length for an AEW PPV? (Chris Mueller, Bleacher Report)

TK: They’ve received great reviews for their quarterly pay-per-views. He really likes the format and length they’ve been working with: a 4-hour main card, plus a Buy-In kickoff show featuring a match or two. This has been working really well for them and expects it to continue this way.

Q: Why is now the right time to pull the trigger on Hangman Page? (Jon Alba, AdFreeShows)

TK: They’ve talked about homemade stars – Hangman is the epitome of a homemade star. He had some exposure before AEW, but not on national television. He’s blossomed in AEW from the beginning. The fans have been along for the ride and seen him grow. He was one of the challengers to determine the first AEW World Champion. Today, it’s a different company and Hangman Page is a different person. Page and Omega have something special between them. They had great chemistry as a team and you could tell they’d be great rivals. Khan picked up some character elements from Being the Elite, including Hangman’s drinking. People are ready to see him rise up from the lowest lows and conquer his biggest obstacle yet.

Q: Will we see an AEW pay-per-view from California or the Pacific / Mountain time zones in the near future? (Jonathan Hood – ESPN Chicago)

TK: Double or Nothing will take place from Las Vegas once again next year. There’s a good chance AEW will bring Dynamite and Rampage to the west coast round that time.

Q: Is AEW interested in acquiring the ROH video library, or signing ROH talent that is being released from their contracts? (Sean Ross Sapp, Fightful)

TK: Ring of Honor has a lot of great stuff in their library and some very talented performers that have worked for them this year. “We’ll see what happens on the business side.” He said to stay tuned to AEW. He’s good friends with many people in ROH.

Q: Any plans for AEW to present an All-Women’s event? (Ella Jay, SEScoops)

TK: AEW has made great strides with building their women’s division and featuring women prominently on television and pay-per-views.

When the NWA presented their all women’s pay-per-view, he provided them with a lot of that talent and paid them to wrestle for the NWA. The highest paid wrestlers on that show were sent and paid by him. He doesn’t think the NWA did a great job acknowledging that. He feels like he picked up the tab for everybody at dinner and nobody thanked him.

Q: Could we see Bray Wyatt in AEW? (Nick Hausman, WrestlingInc)

TK: He likes Windham a lot, but has never spoken to him about joining AEW. He thinks Windham is a wonderful person and a great talent.

Q: Will AEW Dynamite have a new look when it moves to TBS in January 2022?(Sebastian Diaz, Over the Top Rope)

TK: The great wrestling that people have come to expect from AEW will remain the same. As for show’s presentation – the staging, the graphics, the music – fans can expect some tweaks. He said, “It will be fun!” and if he hears that fans don’t like the changes, they will go back to the current look.

He said to expect less “time shifting” (preemptions) on TBS and plugged the “Battle of the Belts” special that will air Saturday, January 8th on TNT.

Q: When will the Owen Hart Memorial Tournament take place? (Russ Weakland, Hollywood Life)

TK: Fans can expect some big news shortly after Full Gear. There’s so much going on with the PPV, he doesn’t want to let the cat out of the bag just yet regarding the Owen tournament. The Owen will be a big prize in AEW. They have some interesting announcements coming at next week’s Dynamite or Rampage. They have “something fun planned” that everyone will really enjoy.

Q: When Eddie Kingston first joined AEW, could he envision what Kingston’s contributions would be? (Mark Madison, Pro Wrestling Post)

TK: Yes, pretty quickly. He didn’t know Eddie before he answered Cody’s TNT Championship Open Challenge, but they connected immediately. They’re now close friends.

Q: Will AEW continue taping Dark from Universal Studios? (Jim Varsalone, Miami Herald)

TK: Yes, they plan to continue taping from Universal Studios, when they can and when it makes sense. On weeks where they have live Rampage tapings (like this week), they tape Dark before Rampage.

Q: Are there plans to keep Dante Martin & Lio Rush as a tag team? (Bill Prichard, WrestleZone)

TK: It’s a story. Without saying too much about where things are going, he’s enjoying the pairing. He worked closely with them on their Dynamite match this week. He sees a lot in Lio Rush and actively recruited him to come out of retirement.

Q: How is the relationship with NJPW? Could we see AEW talent at Wrestle Kingdom in January? (Samantha Shipman, DailyDDT)

TK: “It’s a great relationship.” It was rocky when AEW first launched, but things have smoothed over. Enjoys working together and they talk on a regular basis. Expect more talent sharing in the months ahead.

  • Chris Jericho Says Recent MJF Promo Got the “Wrong Kind of Heat”

Chris Jericho Says Recent MJF Promo Got the “Wrong Kind of Heat”

During a recent interview on Sports Media with Richard Deitsch, Chris Jericho noted that he thought a line from a recent MJF promo got the “wrong kind of heat.” MJF was addressing Sting and commented on his long-time friend Lex Luger being in a wheelchair.

“There was a line a few weeks ago that MJF used about Lex Luger being in a wheelchair to Sting. I don’t think that gets heat, I think it makes people feel uncomfortable. I think it makes people feel bad, and you don’t want that,” Jericho said of the comment.

Jericho continued to talk about the intricacies of using real-life issues in wrestling promos.

“There is a fine line between using real life issues, and going too inside baseball, where it’s like, ‘I don’t know what this guy is talking about, but it just doesn’t feel right.’ To me, that is the fine line of a pro wrestling promo.”

“That’s how I feel. I don’t think it gets more heat, I think it actually gets reverse heat, which has people going, ‘ugh. We know it’s a show.’ It’s like watching the new Star Wars movie and someone going, ‘Kylo Ren, your mom in real life had an abortion when she was sixteen.’ What does that have to do with Kylo Ren? It’s two different things. So, I think there’s a fine line to it. You can make things seem real with your intentions and the way you say things and the words you use. That makes it real.”

    Chris Jericho In AEW

Chris Jericho is scheduled to team with his Inner Circle teammates against The Men of the Year and American Top Team at Full Gear. This week on AEW Dynamite, Dan Lambert power-bombed Jericho through a table.

Jericho noted in September that the year-long feud he had with MJF was the longest of his career and also one of the best. The angle evolved from MJF joining the Inner Circle and causing dissension, to a stable war between the Pinnacle and Jericho’s faction. Jericho took to Instagram to comment on what the angle meant to him. His comments are available in the link below.

  • Tony Schiavone: “The Acceptance Of The Fans For My Return Has Been Mind-Blowing”

Tony Schiavone: “The Acceptance Of The Fans For My Return Has Been Mind-Blowing”

Tony Schiavone started his wrestling broadcasting career in 1983. Once WCW was purchased by WWE in 2001, however, he found himself on the outside of the business. He spent several years working as a sports anchor on the radio covering the Georgia Bulldogs and the Atlanta Braves minor league system.

In 2015, Schiavone began working at Starbucks to supplement his income from sports broadcasting, something Britt Baker has mentioned on AEW programming. He’d return to wrestling broadcasting in 2017 with MLW and then in 2019 with AEW.

During a recent interview with SI.com, Schiavone says his time with AEW has been the best of his career. He also noted how pleased he is with how fans have responded to his return.

“It’s been the best two and a half years of my career,” Schiavone said. “It’s worth your weight in gold to work for good people, and it’s a pleasure to work here. And I can’t stress this enough—the acceptance of the fans for my return has been mind-blowing. So for me, it’s really easy doing what I do because I love it so much.”

“It almost makes me numb how much people care about me,” Schiavone continued. “I never thought I’d be back in wrestling. It’s like I was reintroduced to an old love. Wrestling fans welcomed me home, and I’m forever grateful.”

    Butts In Seats

A kickstarter for a biographical graphic novel on Tony Schiavone’s career raised over $135,000. The book, titled “Butts in Seats”, is currently available for pre-order. Schiavone spoke about what fans can expect from it.

“This is my story of loving wrestling as a fan, getting involved with the Crocketts, working with Ted Turner, spending a year with WWE, then being out of the business for 18 years before coming back.”

  • Eddie Kingston Says Match Against CM Punk The Most Personal Of His Career

Eddie Kingston Says Match Against CM Punk The Most Personal Of His Career

Last year at Full Gear, Eddie Kingston challenged Jon Moxley for the AEW World Championship. He lost an I Quit match to the wrestler who would later become his partner. This year, Kingston takes on CM Punk in a match he is calling the most personal of his career.

Kingston took part in an interview with DAZN and spoke about what his match with Punk means to him.

“I wouldn’t say it’s the biggest match of my career but it’s definitely the most personal match,” Kingston said. “Professionally, it was me and [Jon] Moxley last year because I truly believe in my heart that the AEW World title is the biggest prize in all of America. That was the biggest match for me, but this weekend, personally, it’s me and Punk.”

Kingston would continue to talk about his run with AEW. He started with the company in the summer of 2020 as Cody Rhodes was giving TNT title shots to wrestlers from outside AEW. Kingston challenged Cody on the show taped on July 16th (aired July 22nd, 2021). Later that month, it was announced that Kingston had signed a full-time contract with the company.

“I did not expect this, and I have to pinch myself every once in a while,” Kingston continued. “I still don’t think it’s real. I’m just trying to live in the moment. This can all be taken away at any moment just like 2020 has shown us.”

AEW has confirmed a couple of new matches for their upcoming Full Gear PPV including the bout for Malakai Black and more.

This week’s episode of Dynamite saw Dax Harwood facing Pac in a one-on-one match. The ending saw Pac submit his opponent for the win.

However, the high-flying star kept the hold even after the bout was over. This led to Cash Wheeler, Andrade El Idolo, Malakai Black, Cody Rhodes, Rey Fenix, and Penta all coming out to the ring.

An all-out brawl broke out between these two groups. After this, AEW announced that Cody Rhodes will be teaming with Pac to face Andrade and Black at the PPV.

The promotion also confirmed a buy-in match for the show. They revealed that Nyla Rose and Jamie Hayter will be teaming up to face Thunder Rosa and Hikaru Shida.

  • Bryan Danielson Reveals AEW Contract Length

Bryan Danielson Reveals AEW Contract Length

Bryan Danielson has unveiled his contract length with AEW.

Danielson made his AEW debut back in September. He has already proven to live up to the hype, delivering some highly praised matches. Danielson has shared the ring with the likes of Kenny Omega, Minoru Suzuki, Nick Jackson, Eddie Kingston, Bobby Fish, and Dustin Rhodes.

How long is Bryan Danielson’s AEW contract?

Bryan Danielson was a guest on the latest episode of The MMA Hour. During the show, Danielson revealed to Ariel Helwani the length of his AEW deal.

    “Three years.”

Danielson was then asked about whether or not he’s allowed to work for other promotions internationally.

“Obviously, I have to clear it all through AEW first. AEW has to be my priority but even going to Japan right now is hard with COVID and all that kind of stuff. I’m able to do that but to be fair, WWE was gonna let me do that as well. With the contract that they offered me and when I was talking to Vince about it cause that was one of my big things. I was like, ‘I wanna be able to go and wrestle these guys all over the world’ and that sort of thing, and they were gonna allow me to do that.”

Danielson has made it to the finals of the AEW World Heavyweight Title Eliminator tournament. He will be meeting Miro to determine the tournament winner at the Full Gear PPV on Nov. 13.

  • Arn Anderson Explains “Glock Promo” On AEW Dynamite

Arn Anderson Explains “Glock Promo” On AEW Dynamite

Arn Anderson wants everyone to know that he’s not the kind of guy you should attempt to car jack. In a now somewhat famous promo he delivered on the September 29th edition of AEW Dynamite, Anderson spoke about carrying a “Glock.”

“A man jerks your door open and says, ‘Out of the car, I’m taking your car.’ You can, ‘take it, just don’t hurt me.’ You know what I do? I pull out the glock, put it to his forehead and spill his brains all over the concrete. I’m Arn Anderson and all that implies and I’ll be damned if I’m gonna coach a loser!” Anderson said in the promo.

Recently on his podcast, Arn clarified that he has never carried a gun. The imagery he created in the promo was just a metaphor.

“That was meant to be a metaphor. And to let everyone know that I am through being a victim,” Anderson explained. “I’ve had enough and I am not a victim, I am a predator. I just used a very extreme example. I don’t carry a gun, I have never carried a gun on my person.”

“It was meant to be what it was and I think the shock value was the ‘Spilling of the brains, painting the sidewalk with the brains,’ which is what I think had everybody go ‘whoa, okay alright.’ 99% of everything I read or saw understood don’t take it literally, people got it.”

  • Bryan Danielson Details His Decision To Leave WWE & Sign With AEW

Bryan Danielson Details His Decision To Leave WWE & Sign With AEW

Bryan Danielson was recently on the Bellas podcast with his wife Brie Bella and sister-in-law Nikki Bella. Danielson’s decision to leave WWE was discussed on the show. Not only do the Bellas have a relationship with the company, but WWE’s Head of Talent Relations, John Laurinaitis is married to the mother of the Bella Twins as well.

“[Brie] was very good about not pressuring me either way,” Danielson said on the show. “Because it would be very easy to say, ‘hey, it would be a lot easier for my career if you stayed where you’re at.’”

Bryan Danielson Considered Not Signing With Any Company

Danielson continued to say that Brie was also very patient with him taking a long time to determine what he would do. During his decision-making process, Danielson also considered the idea of not signing with any company.

“It would be, like, not signed anywhere. Wrestle kind of if I wanted to, kind of when I wanted to,” Danielson said.

He continued to say that he really wanted to have this summer off so he could spend time with his daughter, Birdie.

“That was one of the things I wanted is the summer off before Birdie goes to preschool so I could be with her every day, because I’ve never gotten to be with her every day,” Danielson continued. “Because I love being a Dad.”

Although part of him just wanted to stay home and be a father, Danielson wanted to take advantage of the hot free agent market in wrestling right now.

“There’s never been a better time to be a free agent since I’ve been a wrestler,” he continued. “Since the late 90s when there was WCW and WWE kind of going to war. There’s never been a better time from a financial perspective to be a wrestler. I can only imagine Brie’s frustration when I was like ‘yeah, I’ll just turn down all the money and I’ll just be a Dad.’”

  • Billy Gunn Not Interested In A War Between WWE And AEW

Billy Gunn Not Interested In A War Between WWE And AEW

The war of words between AEW and WWE has heated up in recent months. Shots have been traded from both sides not only by the officials but performers from both companies as well. Though Billy Gunn doesn’t seem interested in joining this fight. The wrestling veteran recently had an interview with Riju Dasgupta of SportsKeeda.

There are many fans who want a full-blown war between the two promotions and believe that AEW can take WWE down. Talking about the notion, Billy explained that he doesn’t necessarily want to take the rival promotion down:

“Do we really want to take them down? Is it better that we just have competition? I think that’s what made the Attitude Era and the thing with WCW and WWE good is that there was competition. If you don’t have any competition, then I feel, and these are my opinions, I feel that we thrive on competition,”

Billy Gunn Wants The Competition To Be Natural

Billy Gun explained that taking shots at the other promotion means that they are not focusing on their own product as much as they can:

“The minute we try to start poking the bear or try to say we’re better than them, I feel that we’re not concentrating on the best that AEW can do. Like WWE is always going to be WWE. AEW’s going to be AEW. So let’s just be us. If our paths cross and it becomes something like that, let it happen naturally.”

Billy Gunn has had a number of runs with WWE. His longest tenure started with his debut for the promotion in 1993 and lasted through 2004. The former DX member was hired as a coach by AEW in January 2019. He has since started making TV appearances as well.

Malakai Black Teases ‘Interesting Changes’ To His Character

Malakai Black has made a number of changes to his character since joining AEW. Though it appears that he hasn’t reached his final form just yet.

The mysterious star recently had an interview with Fulton County Post. He talked about things such as the circumstances leading to his WWE release and more.

Speaking of his AEW persona, Black claimed that fans will get to see a very interesting change in the behavior of his character in the coming two weeks:

“There’s a lot of things that I put into Malakai that I haven’t even shown, the interesting thing is that in the next two weeks you’re going to see a very interesting change within the aesthetics and the behavior of said character.”

Malakai Black also went into detail of the effort he has put into his current character. He described the various places he has taken inspiration from for his act and detailed the meaning behind the aesthetics of his entrance.

The former WWE star has been feuding with Cody Rhodes since his debut for AEW in July. He has also recently formed an alliance with Andrade El Idolo. We will have to see how the teased character changes affect this partnership.

Eddie Kingston Explains Why He Doesn’t Get Along With Chris Hero

Eddie Kingston and Chris Hero have been beloved by wrestling fans but the two just can’t get along.

For years, Kingston fought for every inch of turf he could get in the wrestling industry. It has finally paid off with his AEW run. Chris Hero is someone fans rooted for during his time on the indies and Ring of Honor. Ultimately, his two NXT runs didn’t pan out the way he hoped.

Eddie Kingston Details Chris Hero Beef

Eddie Kingston spoke to GiveMeSport’s Louis Dangoor and he shared why he and Chris Hero don’t see eye-to-eye.

“They know that I’m going to go out there and be a pro and they know that I’m not going to go out there and go into business for myself and hurt them or bury them. They know I’m not going to do that. Whatever I say in that moment is reality, but after, I don’t care. I’ve known a lot of these guys (in AEW) for over 10 years. They know how I am and they know I’m not going to do anything to hurt anybody. Everything I do is for the company. Have I had people on the Independents (be mad), yeah. Chris Hero, me and him don’t like each other, there were a lot of things said by both of us where we were giving each other shots. We were letting each other say things and went, ‘I’ll remember that when we’re in the ring.’”

Earlier this year, Kingston admitted to Wrestling Observer Radio that Chris Hero did help train him early in his career. Somewhere along the line things went south.

Kingston is preparing for a showdown with CM Punk at Full Gear on Nov. 13. Ahead of the match, Kingston penned a piece on the Player’s Tribune, detailing his struggles with mental health.

Eddie Kingston Talks His Struggles With Depression

Eddie Kingston noted that he takes the anti-depressant Zoloft during a recent promo with Bryan Danielson. He has now written an article for the Player’s Tribune about his struggles with depression.

“The only thing that kept me from getting depressed was wrestling,” Kingston wrote about his mental health as a teenager. “I either had to be fighting in the neighborhood, or sitting at home watching a match. Otherwise, I’d fall into a depression.”

“When I couldn’t control it, I’d end up throwing hands with dudes in the middle of class,” he continued.

Kingston also wrote about drinking heavily while working as an independent wrestler.

“So I drank. Christ, did I drink. I became a bouncer just so I could drink more. On the weekends I’d start drinking at 1 p.m,” Kingston wrote.

“I was sick, I hated myself. I would sit at home drinking whiskey, watching guys who I’d come up with in the indies wrestling on national TV in the big promotions, and I’d just sit and stew until I blew up. I’d punch holes in the walls. I’d smash bottles. I was a danger to myself and others.”

  • AEW Announces 3 New Shows Including Greensboro Coliseum Debut

AEW Announces 3 New Shows Including Greensboro Coliseum Debut

AEW announced 3 new shows today including one for next month at a very historic wrestling venue. AEW will make its debut in the Greensboro Coliseum on December 22nd.

AEW will then present its debut on TBS at New Jersey’s Prudential Center. The finals of the TBS title tournament is scheduled for that show.

Then on January 12th, AEW will return to North Carolina for a show in Raleigh.

The show on January 12th was originally scheduled for New Orleans. That show will now take place in April, however.

    Greensboro Coliseum Wrestling History

Built in 1959, the Greensboro Coliseum has been home to numerous pro-wrestling events. From 1983-86 it was the venue for Starrcade. It also hosted the Great American Bash in 1986, WWE Unforgiven 1998, King of the Ring 1999, and Survivor Series 2001. The last pro-wrestling event held from the venue was an episode of Smackdown in January of 2020.

During his recent interview with Wade Keller, Tony Khan spoke about what goes into AEW’s decision making process regarding which cities to visit.

“It’s not the most scientific process but it involves picking our best markets and looking where we’ve done good numbers and trying to make sure we cover some new markets,” Khan said during the interview.

  • Tony Khan Comments On The Vaccination Status of the AEW Roster

Tony Khan Comments On The Vaccination Status of the AEW Roster

During a recent interview with Wade Keller of the Pro Wrestling Torch, AEW President Tony Khan noted that most of his company’s roster is vaccinated. He also mentioned that the company is hoping to travel Canada or Europe in the future and talent who aren’t vaccinated may have trouble getting across the border.

“I have got, most of the roster in AEW is vaccinated,” Khan said.

“There have been some places we went where everybody had to be vaccinated. I think when the company starts doing international travel, we’ll see that for say, Canada, for England, places like that, it’ll be very difficult for wrestlers to travel without it,” he continued.

AEW has not mandated that talent be vaccinated, however. He noted that their situation is similar to the NFL’s.

“I’ve not required it, same with the NFL, same with other wrestling leagues, but it will be a big challenge if you’re not for a lot of circumstances,” he said.  “A great example was the Jericho cruise where all the wrestlers on the Jericho cruise had to be vaccinated.”

According to various reports, vaccination status may have played a role in WWE’s most recent string of roster cuts.

“It was probably a half-dozen or more that did not get vaxxed that were cut,” Dave Meltzer said on Wrestling Observer Radio. “And it was very much part of the reason.”

Ethan Page On How AEW Helps Talents With Mental Health

One important aspect of maintaining the performers’ well-being for any company is taking care of their mental health. Ethan Page says AEW goes a step further to make sure all their performers are in good mental shape.

The Men of the Year member recently had an interview with DAE On Demand and detailed the length AEW goes to care for its performers.

When asked about the topic of mental health in AEW, Page explained how Tony Khan and company take an extra step to make sure all their talents are safe and satisfied.

“It’s huge, we get emails and have meetings and we have staff that looks after people and will reach out to people,” said Page. “There’s a large amount of people we can use and resources for things like that. AEW is a big family when it comes to the way we treat each other and think about each other.”

Page gave an example of AEW officials making practical practical decisions to keep their stars healthy. He recalled his coffin match against Darby Allin on the July 14 episode of Dynamite.

He got pretty banged up during this physical match. When he got backstage afterwards, Tony Khan was waiting for to greet him. The AEW president shook his hand when he got to the back and gave him a week off to recover from the gruesome bout.

Ethan Page will be in action this Saturday at AEW Full Gear. The Men of the Year and Dan Lambert’s American Top Team faction will battle the Inner Circle in a Minneapolis Street Fight.

  • Bully Ray Feels It Isn’t Time For Hangman Page To Win AEW World Title

Bully Ray Feels It Isn’t Time For Hangman Page To Win AEW World Title

Bully Ray doesn’t think Hangman Page is ready to be AEW World Champion.

All Elite Wrestling presents AEW Full Gear this Saturday, November 13, live from Minneapolis, Minnesota at the Target Center It’ll be the final PPV card for AEW of 2021. The main event will see Hangman Page will be challenging Kenny Omega for the AEW World Heavyweight Championship.

Many believe that the timing is right for Hangman to reach the mountain top at AEW, but Bully Ray has a different take.

Bully Ray On Hangman Page As Champion

On a recent episode of Busted Open Radio on SiriusXM, Bully shared his belief that AEW needs to get more heat on this angle before Hangman Hangman becomes a world champion.

“I would say to stick with Kenny right now,” said Ray. “That’s just my own personal opinion. I’m not gonna say if Tony decides to switch it’s the wrong decision, or this or that. Listen, booking is all about feel also. There are Xs and Os that go with it but it’s also all about feel.”

Bully Ray continued, “Do I feel it’s the right time for Hangman? I’m gonna say in nine days? No. I would like to see Kenny get more heat on Hangman or them come up with a way to get more heat on Hangman.”

Bully went on to say that one idea could be for The Elite to take out The Dark Order “mafia-style.” He also says if Hangman were to win the title at Full Gear, then Tony Khan will have to decide who the top three heels in the company are to challenge for the gold.

  • Tony Khan Reacts To New Wave Of WWE Roster Cuts

Tony Khan Reacts To New Wave Of WWE Roster Cuts

Tony Khan has reacted to the latest wave of WWE roster cuts and whether or not some names stand out to him.

WWE recently had another string of roster cuts. On the same day the company announced $256 million in revenue this past quarter alone, 18 wrestlers were released. The reported reason was due to “budget cuts.” Among the names released were Keith Lee, Nia Jax, Karrion Kross, Scarlett Bordeaux, Ember Moon, and Franky Monet.

Tony Khan Discusses WWE Roster Cuts

Tony Khan, the AEW boss, spoke to Wade Keller on a new Focus on AEW episode and he talked about the impact that WWE’s latest wave of releases is having.

“Yeah, every time they cut like 20 people let’s just say, it’s terrible because every time somebody loses a job it is affecting them, it’s affecting people around them. Some of these people for all I know they might’ve wanted to leave, but in general, I think most of these people probably did not. So, it’s terrible when anybody loses their work and I feel for them. So, each and everyone counts.

“I’m gonna take a ballpark number and I’m not trying to make light of everything because everyone counts. And I know this is probably not the exact amount of people but every time they let, let’s say as a ballpark, 20 people go, I think there’s in general been one, two, three people in there or so that I am interested in and snatch up because they keep doing these mass layoffs. They let, let’s say 20 people go or more or less, and each time I find a few people and the company gets a little stronger and stronger in my opinion.”

Khan then admitted that there are some names who he’d be interested in doing business with.

“I do see a few in this wave. I don’t wanna say who or when I would be interested in them but there’s a few very interesting people they just let go.”

  • Tony Khan explains how AEW’s creative structure has changed

Tony Khan explains how AEW’s creative structure has changed

Tony Khan is opening up about the creative influence of AEW’s Executive Vice Presidents.

Khan recently spoke with Wade Keller of PWTorch earlier this week to promote next weekend’s Full Gear pay-per-view.

During the discussion, Khan addressed the rumors that Cody Rhodes, Kenny Omega and The Young Bucks are less-involved than they used to be. Khan said that he has taken over much more of the writing of the shows, but that the EVPs all contribute their ideas as much as they ever did.

What has changed, however, is that they no longer book the show as a committee.

“They are still very involved in a lot of aspects of the business and a lot of those things have been enhanced,” said Khan.

He spoke about Kenny Omega leading a team to create the AEW console video game and Cody and the Young Bucks being leaders in the locker room.

“I’ve probably gotten a little bit more hands on with the stuff that I do than when we started but that makes perfect sense because I had never worked in a wrestling company,” Khan said.

    Drawbacks of a booking committee

Khan continued to say that in the early days, the show was being booked with him and the EVPs all in a room together. Now, most of the show is booked by him at home.

“I was like the head of a committee and I think there are a lot of drawbacks of trying to book a wrestling show with a committee,” he continued.

“Around the start of 2020, the end of 2019, moved more to me writing the show and I think it helped and the show has been better for it.”

“They are still contributing all their ideas, that has never changed,” Khan continued to say of the EVPs.

  • Tony Khan talks in-depth about his approach to longterm booking

Tony Khan talks in-depth about his approach to longterm booking

AEW President Tony Khan recently spoke to Wade Keller of PWTorch. During the discussion, Khan spoke in-depth about his approach to long-term booking.

Keller asked Khan about if he knows who will come out of Full Gear as the AEW World Champion, and if he knows how long the next champion’s reign will be.

“Yes I do, but you never know,” said Khan. “Things have changed. A lot of the plans I had when Jon Moxley beat Chris Jericho, we did do a lot of the things I wanted to do but a lot of the things were not possible because the pandemic hit.”

“I do have plans, you never know how they are going to change. I do have a lot of plans. Kenny is on one of the great runs and I’m not so sure we’re ready to see it end but on the other hand, Hangman is ready and there are a lot of fans behind him.”

“Whatever the result it, it’s not the end for either man,” Khan continued.

    1 out of 3 times …

Keller then asked Khan what percentage of the time does he stick with what he has planned and how often do things stray from what he originally had in mind.

“It’s probably 2 out of 3 times,” Khan said. “1 out of 3 times something changes, it’s not what you expected, somebody gets sick, and then you put a replacement in and then that starts going well and you move in another direction. So, I would say it’s probably about 2 out of 3 times if I draw stuff up and map stuff up.”

Khan continued to talk about the supposed “leaked card” for AEW Full Gear. A picture of his notebook from the sidelines of a Jaguars game appeared to show the planned lineup for the event but Khan said those were just ideas and not his final ideas for the show.

“People thought I accidentally leaked the PPV card. They saw my doodle notebook on the sideline but that was just me playing around with different stuff, ideas, I was not even close to done with it,” Khan said.

  • AEW’s TV partners excited to build around CM Punk

AEW’s TV partners excited to build around CM Punk

Tony Khan recently spoke with Wade Keller of PWTorch to promote next weekend’s Full Gear pay-per-view. During the discussion, TK commented on recent additions to the AEW roster.

“It’s so unrecognizable compared to the company that we started with,” Khan said about the current roster. “It’s pretty unthinkable looking around and seeing CM Punk, Bryan Danielson, Adam Cole, Ruby Soho, Thunder Rosa, all these awesome people that weren’t with us when we started.”

He continued touting more of AEW’s talent signings. “Malakai Black, Andrade El Idolo, new faces, and even the people that came in last year. Sting and FTR, Matt Hardy, and so many people have joined us along the way from when we started.”

CM Punk’s impact on AEW business

Khan also spoke about the impact that bringing in CM Punk has had on AEW’s ratings, merchandise sales, PPV buys, and more.

“Our numbers are so much better than they were going into the last few months and there’s been an unquestionable lift since CM Punk came in,” Khan said. “For some reason, I see some people trying to discredit Punk all the time, that he hasn’t been a huge lift to our business and he has been. And he’s only scratching the surface. I have intentionally in working with him tried to hold back a lot of his biggest marquee things, biggest marquee matches and stories.”

“We’ve been getting Punk reintegrated, building him a winning streak, and I think it’s worked great. Again, when you look at the rating we did for our first Wednesday back, that was a really strong number last week and he was such a huge part of it,” Khan continued.

“He’s just lifted our business so much,” Khan continued. He also noted that All Out, with Punk’s debut match against Darby Allin, did the most PPV buys in company history.

TV execs thrilled with CM Punk

“I was on with TNT yesterday, they’re so excited about the direction we’re going and the future of the business and there’s so many possibilities they see for the AEW franchise and he’s one of the big stars they want to build around,” Khan continued.

“The TNT executives also had a great call with Punk and talked to him and they want him to know he’s a really valued member of the TNT Warner Media family, the TBS family.”

  • Tony Khan On AEW’s Live Event Schedule, Outdrawing Pro Sports

Tony Khan On AEW’s Live Event Schedule, Outdrawing Pro Sports

Tony Khan recently sat down to talk with Wade Keller for an interview on PW Torch and during the discussion spoke about AEW’s live event schedule. He noted the process the company goes through to determine which cities to visit and how often they do so. Khan also spoke about how AEW’s live events regularly outdraw major sporting events.

“It’s not the most scientific process but it involves picking our best markets and looking where we’ve done good numbers and trying to make sure we cover some new markets,” Khan said of how the company determines which markets to visit.

He would continue to speak about the challenge of booking big arenas, noting that Rampages and PPVs are harder to book than Dynamite because they take place on weekends.

“We try to find the best venues, look at available dates at the big arenas, which is a big challenge,” Khan continued. “Wednesdays are sometimes a little bit easier to get the dates compared to Fridays for Rampage or a weekend for a PPV. Those weekend dates can be really challenging to find if they are booked way in advance at most of the arenas.”

Tony Khan On Visiting Markets Multiple Times

Keller asked Khan about going to markets a 2nd and 3rd time. Khan responded that AEW has had a great response when visiting their biggest markets, such as Chicago, Boston, and Philadelphia, multiple times.

“We did start to hit some markets twice through [before the pandemic]. In 2019, we were the #1 wrestling company in the world in tickets sold per event. In 2020, we were off to a great start and doing even better numbers before the pandemic hit,” Tony Khan continued.

“We had actually gone in early 2020 to some markets again and done really well coming back to Chicago and also we were coming back to Boston and Philly and had great advances there. So, it looked like it was really very strong. We had done a sellout again in Boston for our 2nd time through, and pretty close to a sellout in Philly.”

“We were seeing even before the pandemic the markets were ready to see us again and then after we spent over a year in Daily’s Place there was so much pent up demand for our shows.”

    On Outdrawing Major Sporting Events

The AEW President also noted that they often draw better than major sporting events in leagues such as the NBA and NHL.

“There’s really a lot of top sports leagues right now that we outdraw and people talk about these big hot sports leagues and right now AEW outdraws a lot of major sporting events on a regular basis,” Khan continued.

  • “I Don’t Think Cody Rhodes Cares About Being Booed”

“I Don’t Think Cody Rhodes Cares About Being Booed”

One AEW star doesn’t believe Cody Rhodes is bothered by fans booing him.

Cody insists he has no plans of turning heel in AEW but the fans haven’t taken too kindly to him. The boos rained down on Cody during his AEW Grand Slam match with Malakai Black. It wasn’t just the New York City crowd who turned on Cody Rhodes, however.

QT Marshall, the heel leader of The Factory, appeared on the Battleground Podcast and expressed his belief that Cody Rhodes doesn’t actually care whether or not fans boo him.

“Yeah, I mean, well, it depends,” said Marshall. “I think they were booing him because, like, especially right now with Malakai, Malakai is cool. He’s fresh, he’s from the other place. So it’s like, we’re in the honeymoon phase of Malakai. So, I did expect that.”

It is hard, on the surface, to like him

Marshall understands that Cody Rhodes can be a polarizing figure. Aside from his in-ring career, he’s a successful businessman and television star. This may rub some people the wrong way.

“On top of that, Cody is like a very polarizing figure, right? He’s got his own tour bus that suits. He’s rich. He says, he has a reality show. I mean, it is hard, on the surface, to like him, but at the same time, what has he done to deserve to get booed?

“I don’t know. You know, I punched Arn Anderson in the face. So I deserve to get booed. You know, Malakai kicked Arn’s head off, he deserves to get booed. I’m trying to think of one thing that Cody’s done that deserves booing from the fans. At the same time, as long as they’re making noise, I don’t think he really cares one way or the other.”

Rhodes ended up defeating Black in their third outing. He recently took on Andrade El Idolo on the Nov. 3 episode of Dynamite. A run-in from FTR cost Cody the match.
