All Elite Wrestling is reviving Bash at the Beach.
The event will take place as part of a special edition of AEW Dynamite on Wednesday, January 15th from Miami, FL at the University of Miami’s Watsco Center.
Longtime fans know that Bash at the Beach was an annual WCW pay-per-view. The event ran from 1994-2000.
AEW Executive Vice President Cody Rhodes trademarked the name, “Bash at the Beach” last year. It will be interesting to see if AEW uses a special beach-themed production setup for this event.
Cody also has the trademark for another WCW name, “The Match Beyond.” This phrase was used as the tag line for the popular WarGames match his father created. Cody recently referenced ‘a match beyond’ on AEW programming, another indication that we’ll be seeing AEW’s version of a WarGames match in the months ahead.
Tickets for AEW Bash at the Beach go on sale this Friday morning at AEWTix.com.
AEW has filed to trademark the name, “All Elite Wrestling Blood and Guts” with the above styled logo. The news was first reported by Pro Wrestling News Hub.
According to a search of the United States Patent and Trademark Office’s Trademark Electronics Search System, AEW applied for the trademark last Wednesday, November 13th.
The trademark application includes dozens of uses, including, “Live video streaming of video pay-per-view events on the internet; communication services, namely, transmitting streamed sound and audio-visual recordings via the internet; streaming of audio material on the internet; streaming of video material on the internet; transmission of information in the audio-visual field; mobile media services in the nature of electronic transmission of entertainment media content; podcasting services; webcasting services; video-on-demand transmission services.”
AEW President Tony Khan has stated the promotion plans to hold four (quarterly) pay-per-view events per year. This year, we’ve had Double or Nothing, All Out and Full Gear. This trademark application indicates that AEW’s next pay-per-view, expected to be held in February, could be titled, AEW: Blood and Guts.
The “Blood and Guts” moniker is a reference to a remark from none other than WWE Chairman & CEO Vince McMahon. During a WWE Investor call back in July, McMahon was asked about his upstart competitor.
McMahon said competition is good for everyone, but said he hopes AEW does not resort to “blood and guts” content. Referencing AEW’s occasional violent matches, he said, “I can’t speak for TNT but I can’t imagine they’d put up with that.
WWE Hall of Famer Arn Anderson has divulged information over his role in All Elite Wrestling (AEW). Anderson discussed his position with the promotion during a recent Starrcast appearance, sharingthat his core responsibilities revolve around helping AEW talent develop their characters.
“I really haven’t had a lot to do with AEW as far as the nuts and bolts, I’ve just kind of been talent so far. Which has been great; [the talent] is so in tune with the product,” Arn explained to Wrestling Inc. “I’m just – Jesus Christ, guys, I’m 61 years old. To be able to walk through the locker room with these kids and them even know who I am, it’s pretty flattering to be honest with you.”
Despite still familiarizing himself with the majority of the AEW locker room, Anderson confessed that one talent jumped out at him: Maxwell Jacob Friedman (MJF).
“I’m just getting used to all of those guys; I haven’t had a chance to see them perform a lot. MJF, are those the right letters? He is a real asshole!” Arn stated. “Now, I’m pretty good in the locker room about jousting. I’m pretty renowned about getting the last word pretty quickly. I don’t know if I want to get into a verbal joust with that kid – he’s a major smart ass.”
Anderson then praised AEW Champion, Chris Jericho. He noted how Le Champion has been able to morph himself into the promotion’s lead heel as he has once again successfully reinvented himself.
All Elite Wrestling (AEW) is committed to providing an alternative to wrestling fans. In an interview with The Herald Bulletin, The Young Bucks divulged how part of their strategy to help deliver on this is by actively listening to their audience.
The promotion’s Executive Vice Presidents have previously expressed how they want to always capitalize on a wrestler’s popularity. EVP Matt Jackson of The Young Bucks reiterated this sentiment, stating “You can’t ignore that stuff in wrestling, you have to go with it. We want to be different than other wrestling companies. We want to listen to our audience and give them what they actually want.”
Matt admitted that AEW keeps their fingers on the pulse of what’s happening with the wrestling world via social media. He pointed to how wrestlers can use these platforms to gain exposure and make a name for themselves and how they monitor these moments for potential new talent.
“Going on Twitter and seeing who’s blowing up, you know, who’s making waves, whose gifs are circulating,” Matt said. “It’s the easiest time ever to have something go viral so like we keep our eyes on everything. That’s how a lot of these stars are being made these days is through social media.”
This method is how Private Party ended up as a part of the AEW roster. Matt Jackson recalled watching a 60 second YouTube clip and immediately wanting to sign them. He noted how only a few months ago, most wouldn’t know who Private Party were. Now, however, when a graphic of the team appears on their big screen “the entire arena goes nuts.”
Chris Jericho recently appeared on AEW’s Canadian broadcast partner TSN and spoke about the difference between AEW and other promotions.
The interview was filmed shortly after the recent Dynamite held in Nashville. Jericho and Sammy Guevara dropped a tag team title match to SCU on the show. Jericho was asked about the match to begin the interview.
“Well, obviously I won and if I didn’t win, do you think I’d say otherwise?” Jericho distorted the truth. “I am le Champion and needless to say, I captivated the Nashville crowd here and they are holding a parade in my honor tomorrow.”
Jericho was also asked about the differences between the many wrestling organizations active today.
“I think the biggest difference between all the companies is there’s just a lot more of a sense of creative freedom in AEW,” Jericho said on the show. “It’s more really ‘live without a net’ and when we say live TV, it really is. A lot less planning, which sometimes things go off the rails but always in a good way.”
“I think when things are over-analyzed and over-thought it becomes a little bit sterile, and a little bit saccharine,” Jericho continued. “We don’t have that in AEW so it’s a lot more a wild west mentality.”
The hosts of the show also noted that the ratings for AEW in Canada have been quite good. This was also noted by AEW President Tony Khan during the post-Full Gear media scrum. Khan also said they hope to throw events in Canada in 2020.
This week on Dynamite, Santana, and Ortiz were involved in a backstage brawl with the Young Bucks. The team now known as Proud and Powerful got the advantage on Matt and Nick Jackson, even power bombing Matt through part of the Dynamite stage.
Following the attack, Santana and Ortiz cut a promo in the back. AEW recently published the promo in the below Instagram post:
Proud and Powerful Send Message to the Young Bucks
“Perfect, just who I wanted to see,” Ortiz says to begin the video. “You see that? We put them in the circle.”
Santana then began to speak.
“Young boys, I hope you’re ready because every time we see you it’s on-site,” Santana said in the video. “Every city, every state, every arena, y’all better be ready and willing to fight because this s**t don’t end here, it don’t end now, it keeps going and going and going.”
“People keep asking us, they keep asking us why aren’t you going after SCU?” Ortiz added. “Why aren’t you going after the tag team titles? There’s one title we want and Young Bucks, you got that title. We’re the best, we’re the best, we’re the best!”
“Try to prove us wrong,” Santana concluded the video with.

On this week’s episode of Dynamite, Shawn Spears was involved in a triple threat match against Darby Allin and “the Librarian” Peter Avalon. During the match, Spears’ opponent from Full Gear, Joey Janela, came down to the ring and dragged Spears away from the match.
Afterward, both Spears and his manager Tully Blanchard were interviewed in the back and sent a message to Janela.
“I’m rarely speechless and I’m almost that way right now,” said Blanchard in the video. “You take a guy out at Full Gear and it’s over with, it’s done! Move on to the next chapter of your life or your career. Shawn is moving up the ladder and that’s where it’s at. You keep sticking your nose in and there’s a lot of people tried to stick their nose in over my lifetime but it never paid off and Shawn you will take him down like never before.”
The full interview can be viewed in the Instagram post below:
Shawn Spears and Tully Blanchard
Before AEW Dynamite launched on TNT, Spears spoke to Muscle and Fitness magazine about what fans can expect from the new show.
“We are gonna do our thing on Wednesday nights, we’re gonna tear it up and if you watch, fantastic, we think you are in for one hell of a treat, and if you don’t watch, you are missing one hell of a show, it is really that simple,” Spears said.
Cody dropped an AEW World Championship match to Chris Jericho at AEW Full Gear in Baltimore. As a result of a stipulation added in the build-up to the match, Cody can now never challenge for the AEW World Championship ever again.
Cody took to Instagram recently to share his thoughts on what happened at Full Gear:
“Lovely snap my Wife got of Pharaoh and I days removed from the biggest loss of my professional career. Nothing positive will come from whining/pointing fingers. I’d like to thank everybody who attended Full Gear & Dynamite this last week, from Baltimore to Nashville…some of the loudest and loveliest fans ever. “
“Both cities did it “AEW style” by not just making it about a single event, but instead turning multiple days into a party and destination. I’d like to thank Tony Khan and my fellow EVPs. As well as Keith Mitchell, Tim Walbert, Rafael, Sandra, Janet, Stella, Chris H, Jeff J, QT Marshall, Jim Ross/Excalibur, Steve Yu & Dylan at Comeback Studios, and the long list of invaluable soldiers who were able to bring together such a first-rate production.”
“I’d also like to extend my gratitude to the Baltimore Commission and Dr Michael Sampson for treating my cut and allowing the World Title match to proceed for the fans in attendance. The end result is not something I can accept, it was my call/choice to make and nobody else’s. I can’t change it, but I can move forward and hopefully find some vindication. Need to heal, train, and most importantly DO THE WORK. Lesson here: always trust your dog.”
Cody attacked MJF and Chris Jericho this week on Dynamite but was ultimately stopped by the debuting Wardlow.
All Elite Wrestling presented Full Gear on November 9th from Baltimore. The show featured a much-anticipated world title clash between Cody and Chris Jericho. According to a report from the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, the buyrate for the event stayed around the same level or possibly slightly below All Out.
“The numbers look to be about the same as All Out, which ended up at about 100,000, or slightly below,” wrote Dave Meltzer.
The report would continue to say that digital buys were similar to that of the first two shows, which is arguably disappointing since there was a television show promoting the PPV this time but not with the last PPVs. Cable numbers are currently unavailable.
All Elite Wrestling Burate Statistics
AEW’s Double or Nothing PPV in May was trending slightly lower than Full Gear is at the same time. That show ended up doing around 100,000 buys as well.
AEW’s All Out PPV took place at the end of August. That show is also believed to have done around 100,000 buys.
AEW’s 2020 PPV Schedule
It’s not certain when AEW’s next PPV will be but Tony Khan mentioned that an event in the first quarter of 2020 will be announced soon.
“It’s no secret that Double or Nothing, All Out and now Full Gear are big quarterly brands for us. So in Q1 there will be something, we’ll make an announcement very soon,” Khan said at the post-Full Gear media scrum.
Jim Ross spoke about what one of his biggest fears was about going to AEW on the latest episode of his “Grillin JR” podcast. According to comments JR made, he was concerned that so many talents at AEW are also Executive Vice Presidents in the company.
“One of my biggest fears of going to AEW was that a lot of the top talent are all EVPs,” Ross said on his podcast. “And they are going to be deciding the fate and direction of a lot of talent and sometimes talents taking orders from other active talents doesn’t work out real well.”
Ross would continue to say, however, that so far there have not been any issues in AEW regarding this.
“Now, I will tell you, this situation at AEW right now has been phenomenal. Talents are communicated with, they have input, they have real input, not just lip-service bulls**t.”
JR then spoke about Jericho’s recent promo work.
“Do you think anybody books Jericho’s stuff? Jericho’s concept for that promo they had last week was all his and then he let the guys who had lines come up with their own lines. Like when Sammy G said that Jericho was the youngest AEW champion in history, it was funny!”
JR’s comments about AEW come in around the 42-minute mark of the below podcast:
All Elite Wrestling (AEW) official Earl Hebner has addressed the criticisms that have been lobbied at the promotion’s officials. Speaking with the WINCLY podcast, Hebner, who has over 40 years of refereeing experience, addressed his duties and reflected on the other referees’ learning experience.
“They need to have me in their dressing rooms teaching them,” Hebner said.” Right now I’m just doing PPVs because of travel and everything so I’m fortunate to just do the PPVs. What they have is pretty good. We learn every day so it’s not like we know everything.”
When it comes to what he believes AEW referees can do to improve and maintain order of their matches, Hebner pointed to tag matches and 10 counts being too slow: “Sometimes I think with the tag matches there’s too much interference and they bury the ref a lot.”
AEW refereeing has been criticized by some for being inconsistent in what is or isn’t permitted. These flaws have been more noticeable during tag or multi-person matches and are something AEW officials have previously acknowledged in their attempts to improve.
Having been in the industry as long as he has, Hebner was familiar with Cody Rhodes’ father, Dusty. When asked about his relationship with “The American Dream” and his son, Hebner offered:
“It’s great. When I was coming through Dusty was the one who gave me a job. I rode in the truck with Cody when he was a baby,” Hebner shared. “It’s just been awesome to see how Cody has progressed and grown-up. He’s in the footsteps of his dad and every step he makes is Dusty. He’s a great kid and God bless him. He deserves everything he’s getting and going after.”
AEW: Dynamite airs every Wednesday night on TNT at 8/7C. Their most recent pay-per-view, Full Gear, aired this past weekend.
WWE Hall of Famer Diamond Dallas Page (DDP) has appeared sporadically on All Elite Wrestling (AEW). In previous events, DDP has been seen accompanying and helping Cody Rhodes. In an interview with SportsKeeda, DDP addressed his relationship with the promotion and AEW Executive Vice President, Cody.
“I’m happy for all the guys,” DDP stated. “It’s a great way, great to have more guys be a part and someone like Cody Rhodes to be at the helm of this thing. I don’t charge them anything. I don’t have a contract with AEW. I don’t.”
Because of this, he explained how if WWE were to call him with a request or idea, he would be open to the discussion.
“I haven’t heard from them since I’ve done stuff from with AEW but I would do something for WWE tomorrow. I would if they asked me to do something because I’m not a contracted player, I’m doing stuff for Cody Rhodes because he’s like a nephew to me. Without him, without his dad, I wouldn’t have had the career I had.”
Turning his attention to Cody’s ambitions and accomplishments with AEW, DDP shared how he would do “anything he wants” because of his belief in Cody.
“I believe in what Cody is doing, I will do anything he wants. I’m super proud of him. I think he’s done an unbelievable job. You can’t watch enough wrestling, I guess. What they are offering is just different. It’s going to be a fun ride to watch, that’s all I know.”
Cody recently lost to AEW World Champion Chris Jericho at AEW’s recent pay-per-view, Full Gear. This came about after his former friend MJF threw in the towel, ending the match.
AEW Dynamite aired live from the Nashville Municipal Auditorium in Nashville, Tennessee. In addition to the takeaways below, Awesome Kong attacked Allie and cut off some of her hair as a trophy.
Here are 6 takeaways from the show:
Jon Moxley Issued A Challenge
Jon Moxley faced Michael Nakazawa tonight on Dynamite. Before the match, a video package was shown of Kenny Omega getting checked by the doctors following his Lights Out Match against Jon at Full Gear. Omega was not cleared to compete tonight.
Moxley leveled Nakazawa with a Clothesline and then the Paradigm Shift for the easy victory. Jon then posed for the crowd and asked for a microphone. Moxley asked does that match count and said that he told the audience exactly what was going to happen at Full Gear.
Jon stated that Kenny Omega will never be the same again and referred to him as a “radical son of a bitch”. Moxley added that he respects Omega for having the balls to step in the ring with him. Jon said that the next wrestler that fights him should kiss their loved ones goodbye and have an ambulance on standby.
Dark Order Picked Up A Win, Luchasaurus Returned
Jurassic Express (Marko Stunt & Jungle Boy squared off against Dark Order (Evil Uno & Stu Grayson) tonight. Marko started out with a flurry of punches to Evil Uno and followed it up with an Arm Drag.
Grayson and Jungle Boy tagged in and Jungle Boy connected with a Dropkick. Stunt tagged back in and connected with a Hurricanrana on Grayson. Marko hit a Senton and then made his way to the top rope.
Marko applied a Headlock but Grayson tagged in and Evil Uno tagged in. Evil Uno climbed to the top rope and connected with a Senton for a near fall. Evil Uno hit a Backbreaker and tagged Grayson back in. Grayson hit another Senton on the apron and posed with the creepers outside the ring.
Back in the ring, Evil Uno tagged in and continued to beat Marko down as AEW went to a break. When Dynamite returned, Marko Stunt was still isolated in the ring. Marko battled back and planted Evil Uno with a Flatliner.
Jungle Boy tagged in and hit Grayson with a Suicide Dive. Jungle Boy hit a kick to the face and went for the cover but Grayson broke it up. Jungle Boy knocked Grayson out of the ring and went for the cover again but Evil Uno kicked out.
Marko and Grayson tagged in and Stunt botched a springboard and slipped to the apron. Stunt connected with a Hurricanrana and went for the cover but Evil Uno broke it up. Jungle Boy sent Dark Order to the outside and went for a Suicide Dive but got two kicks to the face for his troubles. Grayson hit Stunt with a Backbreaker and tagged Evil Uno. Dark Order connected with the Fatality for the pinfall victory.
After the match, Evil Uno grabbed a microphone and told Stunt that he showed promise. Evil Uno tried to recruit Stunt to the Dark Order but he declined. Dark Order and the creepers then beat Jurassic Express down as the crowd chanted Luchasaurus.
Luchasaurus returned and made his way down to the ring as the crowd chanted “holy sh*t!”. Luchasaurus had a stare down with Dark Order and took out three creepers with a spin kick. Luchasaurus hit Grayson with a Chokeslam and followed it up with a Standing Moonsault. Jurassic Express then shared a hug in the ring to end the segment.
Darby Allin Accepted Moxley’s Challenge
Darby Allin, Shawn Spears, and Peter Avalon battled in a Triple Threat Match tonight on Dynamite. Avalon went for a Crossbody off the top rope but both Allin and Spears got out of the way. Darby then sent Peter to the outside.
Joey Janela rushed down the ramp and battled with Shawn Spears. Darby Allin then connected with the Coffin Drop for the pinfall victory. After the match, Darby grabbed a microphone as the crowd chanted his name. Allin then accepted Moxley’s challenge as the crowd went crazy.
The crowd reaction for Darby Allin was phenomenal tonight. Moxley and Allin are two of the most over wrestlers in AEW and their upcoming match next week should be awesome.
Wardlow Made His Debut & Attacked Cody
AEW Champion Chris Jericho and boasted about still being the champion and defeating Cody at Full Gear. Jericho once again demanded a thank you from everyone in the AEW roster and management.
The crowd cheered and Jericho said he wanted his thank you from people that matter and not the jackasses in Nashville. Jericho called Cody an entitled millennial son of a bitch before the lights in the arena went out.
MJF mocked Cody’s entrance to a chorus of boos from the crowd. MJF betrayed Cody at Full Gear and hit him with a low blow. MJF asked the crowd if they were upset because he threw the towel in and claimed that Cody’s career would be over if he didn’t.
MJF stated that Cody is the real villain and Cody couldn’t give a sh*t about anyone in the crowd. He claimed that the real Cody is a liar, a user and an abuser. MJF added that Cody made him into his puppet and referred to him as a sociopath.
The crowd chanted “bullsh*t” as MJF stated that Cody only wanted to put him underneath his thumb but his thumb wasn’t big enough to hold him down. MJF shouted that he was the new face of AEW and claimed that he was better than Cody Rhodes.
MJF told Jericho that he admired him and that he heard he wanted him to join Inner Circle. MJF referred to Inner Circle as “inner circle jerk” and that Jericho might enjoy the bubbly too much. MJF claimed that he doesn’t need Jericho and Chris joked that MJF wants to be like Jericho.
Jericho claimed that MJF’s parents got horny while watching Chris beat up Juventud Guerrera on WCW and 9-months later MJF popped out. Jericho and Cody then joked that Cody is the biggest jackass in AEW and shared a hug.
Cody started coming down the ramp but AEW officials got in his way. Rhodes sprinted to the ring and went after MJF. Cody botched a Powerslam but recovered and then planted Jericho with one. Wardlow made his debut and slammed Cody to the canvas. MJF barked out some orders and Wardlow choked out Cody with his tie.
The promo between Jericho and MJF was awesome. MJF will easily become one of the biggest stars in AEW now that he is a focal part of the show.
PAC Defeated Hangman Page
Hangman Page faced PAC once again tonight on Dynamite. PAC dominated early and hit a Moonsault off the top rope onto Hangman outside the ring. Back in the ring, Hangman connected with a Powerbomb for a near fall.
Page hit a few chops but PAC battled back with a boot to the face. Hangman connected with a big boot to the face and went for the cover but PAC kicked out at two.
PAC made his way to the top rope and hit a Dropkick to the back of Hangman for a two count. Page slammed PAC on the apron and made his way to the top rope. Hangman hit a massive Moonsault as Dynamite went to a commercial break.
When Dynamite returned, Hangman leveled PAC with a Clothesline as the crowd chanted “AEW!”. PAC went for a low blow but Page caught him. PAC connected with an Enziguri and went for the cover but Hangman kicked out.
Hangman booted PAC in the face and PAC fell out of the ring. PAC went for a Brainbuster but Hangman countered into one of his own. Back in the ring, Page hit the Buckshot Lariat for a near fall.
Page became distracted with the referee but PAC hit him with two kicks to the face. PAC unloaded several more kicks and made his way to the top rope. PAC hit the Black Arrow and then locked in the Brutalizer for the victory.
Scorpio Sky Pinned Chris Jericho
SCU (Scorpio Sky & Frankie Kazarian) defended their AEW Tag Team Championships against Sammy Guevara and AEW Champion Chris Jericho in the main event of this week’s show. Christopher Daniels of SCU was ringside for the match.
Before the main event, Santana and Ortiz brawled with the Young Bucks backstage and eventually to the entrance ramp. Santana and Ortiz beat the hell out of Nick and then slammed Matt through a table.
Frankie and Jericho started off the main event as Jake Hager was ringside. Jericho and Kazarian locked up and Frankie connected with Arm Drag. Jericho battled back with some chops but walked into a Dropkick. Jericho frantically crawled to the corner and tagged in Sammy.
Scorpio Sky tagged in and hit Sammy with a Backbreaker for a two count. Kazarian tagged in and Sammy hit a chop to the chest. Kazarian hit a German Suplex as Scorpio leveled Jericho with a Dropkick as Dynamite went to a commercial break.
When Dynamite returned, Jericho and Guevara were in control and had Frankie isolated in the ring. Sammy hit a Dropkick and posed int he ring to a chorus of boos. Jericho joined in on the pose.
Guevara went for a Shooting Star Press but Frankie got out of the way. Scorpio Sky tagged in and Sammy hit a knee to the face. Scorpio Sky hit a Cutter and went for the cover but Sammy kicked out at two.
Jericho distracted the referee as Jake Hager hit Kazarian with a cheap shot. Hager then launched Daniels into the barricade outside the ring. JR accidentally referred to Hager as Swagger as Jericho tagged in. Scorpio Sky hit Jericho with the TKO for a near fall.
Jericho went for the Lionsault but Scorpio Sky got his knees up. Jericho hit the Codebreaker and went for the cover but Scorpio Sky kicked out at two. Scorpio Sky then rolled up Jericho for the pinfall victory and SCU retained the AEW Tag Team Championships. Chris threw a tantrum and started hitting the ring post with chair as Dynamite went off the air.
This week’s episode of Dynamite was another very good show. I would have preferred not to see Jericho pinned during this match. Scorpio Sky is now the first wrestler to pin him in AEW but Jericho is still undefeated in singles competition. Page and PAC had the match of the night but the segment with Jericho, MJF, Wardlow, and Cody was the best part of the night.
After teasing his debut for the past few weeks, Wardlow
finally made his first appearance on AEW Dynamite during this week’s episode of
the show.
Chris Jericho came out during a segment on the show and he talked about beating Cody Rhodes at the Full Gear PPV this past Saturday night.
Next came MJF who turned on Cody during the PPV and he claimed that if he hadn’t thrown the towel, then Rhodes’ wrestling career would have been over.
The two go back and forth about MJF possibly joining the Inner Circle and they tease tension only to hug each other at the end. Then comes Cody Rhodes.
Cody attacks both the stars and takes out Jericho. He then turns his attention on his former protégé but as Rhodes approaches MJF, Wardlow makes his debut and attacks the former Champion from behind:
The newest AEW star then takes out Cody on MJF’s command. The segment ends with the two standing tall and MJF claiming that he is the face of All Elite Wrestling.
It’s unknown what AEW is planning for Wardlow after his
debut but this segment makes it seem like he will be paired with MJF in the
coming future.
Chris Jericho and Sammy Guevara are not the new AEW Tag Team Champions as SCU remains on top.
The AEW World Heavyweight Champion and highly praised prospect failed to capture the gold when they lost to SCU in a non-title match on Wednesday’s episode of AEW Dynamite on TNT.
If Jericho and Guevara would’ve won then not only did it mark the second set of champions in the history of the titles but also that The Inner Circle would’ve held all of the male titles in the promotion at the moment. That wasn’t the case though.
SCU (Kazarian and Scorpio Sky) won the titles when the promotion held the finals of the Tag Team Title Tournament on the October 30th episode of AEW Dynamite in Charleston, WV at the Charleston Coliseum. SoCal Uncensored beat The Lucha Bros to win the titles.
SCU just made their previous title defense, which was at the AEW Full Gear pay-per-view event from the Royal Farms Arena in Baltimore, Maryland over the weekend.
This is where they beat Private Party and Lucha Brothers in a Triple Threat Match.
Also, at this show, Jericho successfully retained the AEW World Title over Cody Rhodes in the co-main event when he had Rhodes in the Walls of Jericho and MJF threw in the towel.
What are your thoughts on the decision of this match outcome? Sound off in the comment section.
CM Punk joining the WWE Backstage show on FS1 has made fans speculate whether this means that we will see him a WWE ring.
It turns out that Punk could’ve signed with AEW (All Elite Wrestling) instead of FOX Sports. It was noted by Bryan Alvarez on Wednesday’s episode of Wrestling Observer Live that Punk was offered a lot of money by AEW.
In fact, Alvarez noted that “Punk did, in fact, negotiate with AEW” and that Punk “met in person with Tony Khan about AEW and they offered him a lot of money and he ended up with this WWE on FOX gig.”
Alvarez speculated that Punk signing with FOX Sports over joining AEW could indicate that he has no plans to wrestle again as he’s over the in-ring aspect of it. That is pure speculation but if Punk doesn’t want to wrestle again then signing with FOX to have a limited schedule talk show role for big money would make sense.
As noted, Punk has signed with FOX to be a special correspondent and he is not going to be on WWE Backstage full-time while Renee Young and WWE Hall of Famer Booker T will be the hosts of the show. Punk is not under contract with WWE.
This report by Alvarez is interesting as Punk had previously talked about not getting what he thought was a formal offer by AEW.
Regarding a potential wrestling return, Punk has not completely shut out the possibility of wrestling again. He has made it known that he’s always been open to it but for him to wrestle again would need to see him receive a big payday.
WWE Hall of Famer turned AEW Commentator, Jim Ross, did an interview with Sports Illustrated where he spoke about Jon Moxley vs. Kenny Omega.
This Unsanctioned Lights Out Match took place at last Saturday’s AEW Full Gear PPV that saw Moxley go over after a wild match. This contest saw them use everything from shatter glasses to barbed wire weapons.
According to Ross, it was a different match to call as they weren’t working a standard match and that due to the amount of legitimate physical punishment that Moxley and Kenny took, he thinks it may have gone a little too long.
He did praise them for working hard and harder to get something over in years. He added that the passion of those two guys was a breath of fresh air for the business.
“It’s been years since I was this proud of two guys in a match like I am with Moxley and Kenny,” Ross stated. “I’ve never seen a main event like that. They should be congratulated. The effort they put forth was absolutely amazing. This match was a great indication of the in-ring spirit of AEW.”
Ross continued by stating that they want to be about innovation and delivering a great effort and the match gave them stunts, wrestling, drama, and uniqueness. He thinks the match was about two guys that were given a chance to lay out their own game plan and execute their match.
“I loved that the Mox-Kenny match challenged me as a broadcaster,” Ross said. “People kept telling me, ‘JR, this match isn’t for you.’ How do you know that? I wasn’t with ECW; that was Joey Styles’ gig. I never got to call a lot of the hardcore stuff. I don’t find it distasteful, I don’t find it bad.”
Ross added that AEW is supposed to have something for everybody with a variety of styles and presentations that fans are going to like. He made it known that AEW is not a one-dimensional company.
This week’s episode of AEW Dynamite takes place from Nashville, TN from the Municipal Auditorium. This is a big show for AEW, as it’s the first post-PPV episode of the AEW Dynamite era and they barely edged out NXT last week in TV ratings.
The top match advertised for AEW Dynamite a World Tag Team Title defense. Christopher Daniels and Scorpio Sky, SCU, will put their gold on the line against AEW World Champion Chris Jericho and his Inner Circle member, Sammy Guevara.
Hangman Page and PAC will also square off in the “rubber match” of their 3-match series. The winner of tonight’s match will climb AEW’s singles rankings and have a strong case for a future title shot.
We can also expect plenty of fallout from Full Gear, including an explanation from MJF as to why he betrayed his former “best friend” Cody Rhodes.
Former ECW star and current AEW coach Jerry Lynn had announced last week that he was pulling out of the Starrcast IV convention because of a health issue but at the time there weren’t many details available about his health.
The wrestling veteran provided an update on his status from
his Twitter account recently and in a tweet, he revealed that he will be
undergoing surgery for a bulging disc.
Lynn announced that he will be having this operation later this month on November 29 and revealed that it will take him 3 to 4 weeks to recover from the surgery:
Jerry Lynn started his wrestling career in 1998 and he got significant exposure when he got engaged in a two-year-long feud with The Lightning Kid in the early 90s. He then joined WCW’s Cruiserweight Division in 1995.
He signed with Paul Heyman’s ECW in September 1997 after getting fired from WCW while being injured, in July earlier that year. He stayed with the company until the end and main evented the last PPV under the original ECW brand.
Apart from these two companies, Jerry Lynn has also had
stints with WWE, TNA and ROH. He was signed by AEW as a coach and producer
earlier this year.
While it has only been a few weeks since AEW Dynamite made
its Television debut, people have already started feeling the need of a
mid-card title for the show.
Matt Jackson recently held a Q&A session from his
Twitter account while traveling and during the session, he answered questions
such as his favorite tag team besides the Young Bucks and more.
However, when a fan asked if the company will be introducing a mid-card title on their programming, the Executive Vice President replied negatively, saying that it won’t be coming anytime soon:
The upstart promotion has put a lot of emphasis on win-loss records and since the inception of the company, all AEW officials have claimed that wins and losses will matter in their organization.
When a fan asked if they have a way of booking around the possible problems they might face with the win-loss record, Nick provided an interesting tidbit, revealing that the record will reset with time:
While the AEW star did not reveal any further detail on the
matter, it’s very likely that they will have a yearly system for the win-loss
record.
The Young Bucks lost to Inner Circle’s Santana and Ortiz in their match at the Full Gear PPV and we will have to tune in to this week’s episode of Dynamite to see what’s next for the duo after this loss.
AEW President Tony Khan has shed some light on how the 2020 pay-per-view schedule will look like for the promotion.
He did so during a media scrum over the weekend after the promotion finished its third and final PPV event of 2019 with the Full Gear event at the Royal Farms Arena in Baltimore, Maryland.
Coming out of the show, fans and media already want to know when the next big show will be. It’s been known that AEW had previously only planned to hold four PPV events each year with ideally having them in each quarter.
This is something that Khan brought up when asked about the schedule. AEW plans to run four events with one taking place each quarter. They also plan to hold Double or Nothing 2 at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas on Memorial Day Weekend and All Out 2 in Chicago on Labor Day Weekend.
Khan stated that they want to do their best for their fans by giving them value for the shows and giving a great quarterly pay-per-view experience.
AEW charges $50 per event, which some people consider being high as many other wrestling PPV shows these days are offered via a streaming service for a cheaper price.
“So in Q1 there will be something, we’ll make an announcement very soon.”
He noted that fans can expect them to put on shows that have the same caliber of Double or Nothing, All Out and Full Gear.
Khan added, “There’s going to be another one on that Mount Rushmore of quarterly big pay-per-view shows.”
The match between Cody Rhodes and Chris Jericho from Full Gear was one of the most anticipated bouts of the show and the ending which saw MJF turning on Cody has become a topic of discussion among wrestling fans.
During the latest episode of Busted Open Radio, wrestling veteran Bully Ray talked about the PPV including this championship match and explained how the company could have made the moment even better.
According to the former WWE Star, MJF should have thrown in
his scarf instead of the towel to end the match and it would have been very
symbolic:
“What MJF should have done is thrown in his scarf, because the scarf could have been symbolic of the towel. You could have seen him get on the apron, look at the referee, and throw in the scarf. The referee could have looked at the scarf as if that was the throwing in the towel. That would have been very symbolic.”
Bully went on to say that MJF should have then blotted the
face of Cody Rhodes with the scarf to get his blood on it and wear the scarf as
his Shroud of Turin.
The main event of Full Gear saw MJF throwing the towel on
behalf of Cody Rhodes. However, the AEW star then turned on Rhodes and attacked
the former ROH World Champion after the bout was over.
Booker T spoke about Sammy Guevara on his podcast recently and offered a large amount of praise for the 26-year-old. Guevara is from the Houston area and trained at Booker’s Reality of Wrestling school before making his pro-debut in 2013.
During the show, Booker compares Sammy Guevara with a young Eddie Guerrero and says the comparison is a good fit.
“When you look at Sammy, he’s a good looking kid, he really is. And he can really perform at such a young age. And that’s what I look at most about this young kid. That was his debut match going out there in front of the world and doing such an awesome job and letting the world see, ‘hey, man. This kid is pretty good. We got our eyes on him.’ So no, I don’t think it’s too early to be saying something like that about Sammy.”
Booker then asked his co-host Brad about what he thinks about the comparison.
“It’s a big comparison to make about anybody but the comparison isn’t he reminds me of Eddie Guerrero it’s that he reminds me of a young Eddie Guerrero.”
Booker continued to say he thinks Sammy Guevara and a young Eddie Guerrero is a good comparison.
“As well as good as Eddie was when he was that young,” Booker continued. “Because that tells a story as far as how good one is gonna be when you see him when they first get in the ring.”
“So, yeah. Sammy and the comparison, I think it’s actually a pretty good comparison.”
