Hangman Page Wins Casino Battle Royal, Earns AEW Title Shot

Hangman Page said he wasn’t cleared to compete at Double or Nothing but it turns out that wasn’t the case. Page drew the Joker card for the Casino Battle Royale, allowing him to enter at lucky number 21.

MJF attempted to hide and then attack Page after Hangman thought he threw out his last opponent but the ruse didn’t work. Page delivered a Buckshot Lariat to Friedman and tossed him to the outside for the win. The victory not only puts Page into the record books as the winner of the first official AEW match, he also earns a title shot in the process.

On the Road to Double or Nothing earlier this week, AEW announced that the winners of the Casino Royale and Omega vs Jericho would face each other at a later date with the winner becoming the 1st ever AEW World Champion.

    Casino Battle Royal – Pre-Show

Hangman Page drew the joker card and entered this match at lucky number 21. Before then a slew of spots occurred, including Jimmy Havoc stapling a lit cigarette to Joey Janela’s head.

MJF tried to sneak up on Page when it came down to just the two of them but Page (who was in full gear for the match) was too quick him. He delivered a buckshot lariat and tossed out Friedman to get the win and earn a title shot.

Winner: Hangman Page (earns AEW World Championship shot)

Kip Sabian vs Sammy Guevara – Pre-Show

After a crazy back and forth match, Kip Sabian picks up the win in the first ever single’s match in AEW history.

    Winner: Kip Sabian

    Main PPV:

SoCal Uncensored (Christopher Daniels, Frankie Kazarian & Scorpio Sky) vs. Strong Hearts (Cima, T-Hawk & El Lindaman)

SCU came out all decked in USA gear and cut a promo before the match. They surprisingly said that Las Vegas was the worst town they had ever been in.

SCU picked up the win after delivering a Best Meltzer Ever to El Lindaman for the win.

    Winners: SCU

Britt Baker vs. Nyla Rose vs. Kylie Rae vs Awesome Kong

Brandi Rhodes came out before the match could get underway and introduced Awesome Kong as the newest member of the women’s AEW roster. Not only that, Kong would be the 4th entrant in this match. Nyla Rose would take her out with a spear, leaving Baker alone in the ring with Kylie Rae. Baker got the win after a shoulder breaker.

    Winner: Britt Baker

Best Friends vs Angelico & Jack Evans

Jack Evans and Angelico vs the Best Friends kicked off AEW’s tag team division in this match. After a back and forth contest, it was the Best Friends picking up the win after delivering a spiked pile driver. After the match, the two teams looked as though they were gonna hug it out when the lights went out. When the lights came back on, the Super Smash Bros were in the ring. The lights went out again, and when they came back on, 8 or 9 wrestlers were in the ring and they laid waste to both teams.

    Winners: the Best Friends

Aja Kong, Yuka Sakazaki & Emi Sakura vs. Hikaru Shida, Riho & Ryo Mizunami

Hikaru Shida, Riho & Ryo Mizunami were the winners here in a match reminiscent of what you would see in Stardom or a similar Joshi promotion. Aja Kong looked as though she was going to come out of this match the big star but she got taken out after hitting her teammate with her patented spinning back fist.

Hikaru Shida then picked up the win on Sakura with a Shining Wizard.

Winners: Hikaru Shida, Riho & Ryo Mizunami

    Cody Vs Dustin Rhodes

Before the match could begin, Cody sent a message to Triple H:

In a match which will likely go down in history, Cody and Dustin Rhodes battled in a bloody match which the fans loved. Cody played the heel throughout the match. Brandi was even ejected from ringside after delivering a spear to Dustin.

Dustin looked as though he was going to hit Dustin with a Shattered Dreams but Cody removed the turnbuckle. When Dustin charged anyway, a drop toe-hold from Cody into the exposed turnbuckle busted him wide open. After taking a beating from Cody, Dustin would make a comeback and get a few near-falls but it was all for not. Cody won after reliving a Cross Rhodes for the second time.

    Winner: Cody

After the match, Cody asked Dustin to be his tag team partner next week at Fight for the Fallen against the Young Bucks.

Bret Hart Introduces The New AEW World Championship

Bret Hart was brought in to introduce the new AEW World Championship belt. Hart brought out Hangman Page but they were interrupted by MJF. Jimmy Havoc and Jungle boy joined Hangman Page in giving MJF his due to end the segment and Hart showed the live crowd the title belt.

AAA Tag Team Championships: The Young Bucks (c) vs the Lucha Bros (Pentagon Jr. & Fenix)

This was exactly the type of match everyone was likely expecting it would be. Up until this match, these two teams had faced each other several times in PWG and once for the Crash in Mexico. The Bucks would deliver their usual arsenal of offense as would the Lucha Bros, so it was innovative tag team moves throughout the match.

The finish came when the Bucks hit a Meltzer Driver on Fenix for the win.

    Winners: the Young Bucks

    Kenny Omega vs Chris Jericho

Jericho came out to an elaborate entrance which included having stand-ins dressed as his previous personas. Jericho himself came in looking in great shape.

Jericho gained the advantage by putting Omega through a table. Omega also looked like his nose got busted open early as well. Omega kicked out of a codebreaker once earlier in the match but after Jericho delivered his second he broke out a new move after. Jericho delievered a spinning back elbow he calls Judas and Omega wouldn’t kick out. The crowd was stunned.

    Winner: Chris Jericho

After the match, Jericho cut a promo taking credit for AEW success. Jon Moxley then appeared out of the crowd and took out Jericho. Them Moxley took out a ref and then he turned his attention to Omega. After the two brawled on the outside, Moxley through Omega off the top of the gambling chips onto the floor to end the show.

  • MJF Bashes Wrestling Fans, Talks His 1st Match, more…

MJF Bashes Wrestling Fans, Talks His 1st Match, more…

Maxwell Jacob Friedman is a polarizing wrestler. Some think he’s a real salt-of-the-earth type guy whereas others can’t stand him. He spoke with the Sporting News ahead of his participation in AEW’s Casino Battle Royale tonight.

During the interview, MJF spoke about some of the hatred he receives online.

“The one thing that I wish that the fat troll marks on Twitter understood is, I would love for them to get into the ring and let me body slam them one time.”

He continued to say fans don’t understand the physical toll wrestling takes.

“That’s it. I don’t want to do anything else. Just let me give you a regular, good old-fashioned body slam in the ring,” he continued. “You won’t be able to walk for a week. I’m a superman. The fact that I’m able to do what I do is absolutely astonishing. The fact that these fans don’t understand that a ring is comprised of steel, metal beams, wood, and a thin sheet mat, and that’s it.”

MJF wrestled Matt Cross at All In but has since been banned from Starrcast. The following video shows MJF being kicked out of Starrcast II earlier this week:

    MJF On His Debut Match

The 23-year-old says he knew after his debut match in 2015 that he would be a star in the wrestling business.

“It was amazing,” MJF said of his first match. “I recall going into the back, and everybody being like, ‘Man, how many years have you been wrestling?’ I said, ‘That was my first match.’ Everybody was like, ‘Nah, f- off.’”

He continued to say that nobody believed it was his first match.

“Nobody believed me. It pumped me because I already knew I was a star in the making from that moment forward. I knew right away. I was like, ‘You think that was good, just you wait until I really grow into my paws.’ And I have. Very quickly.”

  • Eric Bischoff On AEW’s Subtle Nods To WCW, How They Should Compete With WWE

Eric Bischoff On AEW’s Subtle Nods To WCW, How They Should Compete With WWE

While in town for Starrcast 2 weekend in Las Vegas, Nevada, former WCW Executive Vice President Eric Bischoff spoke with Inside The Ropes about All Elite Wrestling (AEW) securing a cable television deal with TNT to compete against WWE, and some of the similarities to his past rivalry against the sports entertainment conglomerate during the infamous “Monday Night Wars.”

During the discussion, Bischoff discussed AEW coming along at a time when the pro wrestling audience is craving an alternative product to WWE now more than ever.

“The audience now has finally gotten to the point where they really are craving something different,” said Bischoff. “It doesn’t have to be better, it just has to be different.”

Eric Bischoff Explains Why Now Is Perfect Time For AEW

Bischoff would go on to elaborate, explaining why he feels now is the perfect time for AEW to establish themselves as a legitimate alternative product to the longtime industry leader, WWE.

“I think what AEW has the opportunity to do now is to present the product in a different and unique way that’s unique enough so that wrestling fans can feel like they honestly have a legitimate alternative, but not so unique that it doesn’t look like wrestling anymore,” Bischoff explained. “That’s a very good position to be in and I envy them for being in the position that they’ve put themselves into [because] they’ve worked hard for this.”

AEW Should Ignore The Past, Establish Their Own Identity

From there, the interviewer brought up some of the subtle nods to the past wrestling war between WWE and WCW, such as AEW having flames in their official TNT graphic, similar to the official logo that WCW Monday Nitro had when they were on TNT competing against WWE on Monday nights. He then asked if AEW should make a point to tip their cap to the past “War,” noting that they could have Brian Pillman Jr. vs. Jushin Thunder Liger as the opening match on their debut episode on TNT, the same way Nitro had Brian Pillman vs. Jushin Thunder Liger as the opener on their inaugural Nitro broadcast back on September 4, 1995.

“I would stay away from it in the beginning,” said Bischoff. “Because you don’t want to hang your hat on, or brand yourself too closely with, something like Nitro.”

Bischoff continued, “Nitro came along at a point in time that was very unique. We went directly head-to-head with WWE. AEW is not going to do that. So rather than relying too much on that association, I would establish my own brand first and after I get a little bit of momentum on my own, then I would probably do a wink and a nod over to Nitro, or to some of the previous relationships, but I wouldn’t depend on it and I wouldn’t come out of the shoot doing it.

“Because if it was me, the last thing I want people to do is to compare me to Monday Nitro during the Monday Night Wars, because that situation will never happen again. The world has changed in too many different ways for that opportunity to be there again. So rather than comparing my brand to WCW or to Nitro, I would want to stand on my own.”

  • Young Bucks On WWE vs. AEW Tuesday Night War, Undertaker Being Pulled From Starrcast

Young Bucks On WWE vs. AEW Tuesday Night War, Undertaker Being Pulled From Starrcast

With their vision coming to fruition this Saturday night at the show they helped put together, Double Or Nothing, The Young Bucks sat down with Justin Barrasso (@JustinBarrasso) of Sports Illustrated to promote the inaugural All Elite Wrestling (AEW) pay-per-view event.

The interview came just a few days after the promotion announced their deal with Warner Media Group at the recent Upfronts in New York City. As noted, the deal calls for a weekly AEW program to air on TNT.

“It’s exciting to know that so many fans who may not have seen or even heard about us now have the opportunity to do so,” said Matt Jackson when referrin to the AEW on TNT show. “TNT will shine a spotlight on so many talented wrestlers who look, feel and sound so different than what casual fans might be used to.”

During the interview, Barrasso broke the news to Nick and Matt Jackson that WWE is already planning to air programming directly opposite their show. The SI journalist informed them that WWE has a Tuesday night program that is rumored to be premiering on FOX Sports 1 (FS1) after the company moves SmackDown Live from USA Network to FOX as part of their new cable television deal.

“I didn’t know any other wrestling organization was planning on airing opposite of us until this interview,” Matt said in response to the news. “So, that’s news to me!”

    https://twitter.com/MattJackson13/status/1131684759065714688

Nick Jackson, however, took things a bit further. Nick would go on to talk about the pro wrestling business needing competition right now, so he’s happy to hear the news.

“I love it,” said Nick. “That’s exactly what wrestling needs right now, competition. They’ve been so comfortable for the last two decades that they need something like this. This only helps the whole landscape of wrestling.”

The Young Bucks also discussed the creative process behind-the-scenes at the new upstart wrestling promotion, which also consists of creative input from other AEW executives, including Tony Khan, Cody Rhodes, Brandi Rhodes and Kenny Omega, just to name a few.

“The creative team is essentially a group chat that goes 24 hours a day, seven days a week,” Matt said of the creative process in AEW. “Some people in the group think a bit more traditionally, while others think super outside the box. We always come to some sort of agreement, somewhere in the middle. It’s a recipe that works. The process has been both challenging and incredibly rewarding.”

Nick offered his brief follow-up, agreeing that the group has had a good cross-balance that has “meshed well” thus far.

“So far, it’s been pretty good,” said Nick. “We all are fantastic at separate things and, when we come together, it all meshes well.”

Also during the interview, The Young Bucks were asked about another popular topic in the pro wrestling community this weekend, the Starrcast 2 convention and in particular, how The Undertaker was pulled from the festivities after initially being advertised.

“I was actually very sad to see him taken off,” said Nick about the WWE legend being forced out of his advertised appearance. “Fans would’ve loved to meet him in Vegas.”

AEW: Double Or Nothing 2019 goes down from the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada on Saturday, May 25th. The show will air live via pay-per-view, and will be available via the Bleacher Report (B/R) Live online streaming service for $49.99.

Jim Ross Discusses AEW Potentially Signing Jon Moxley

Jim Ross is making the media rounds to promote the AEW Double or Nothing event that is set to take place on Saturday night at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Ross spoke to ESPN 1530’s No Holds Barred where he spoke about a wide range of topics including the possibility of Jon Moxley, formerly known as Dean Ambrose from his time in WWE, signing with AEW.

“I think it could happen for sure, and I think he’s a high priority for any company. Whether it be AEW, or WWE retaining him, or him going ROH or anywhere else. John’s a very talented kid.”

Moxley has been speculated to sign with the promotion by fans to the point where many think that he could make an appearance at Double or Nothing.

For months now, it was known that Ambrose would be departing from WWE at the end of April as he decided not to sign a new contract with the company.

Ambrose finished up his contract with the company when he wrestled at The Shield: Final Chapter event that aired on the WWE Network from a live event at the Tax Slayer Center in Moline, Illinois.

  • CM Punk Shoots Down Double Or Nothing Travel Theory

CM Punk Shoots Down Double Or Nothing Travel Theory

There is a ton of hype behind tomorrow’s (Sat. May 25, 2019) All Elite Wrestling (AEW) Double Or Nothing pay-per-view (PPV). One of the biggest theories from fans about the event is that former WWE Champion CM Punk could make an appearance on the show. Punk has been retired from professional wrestling since 2014 after a bad falling out with WWE.

However, he returned to the ring in a mask at a recent indy show for a quick spot. Many believe Punk has the itch to get back into the ring again on a bigger stage. The one issue with the idea of Punk appearing at Double Or Nothing is that he is working an MMA show that same day. Punk will be commentating for Cage Fury Fighting Championships (CFFC) 75 from Coachella, California.

Double Or Nothing begins at around 4 P.M. from Las Vegas, while CFFC 75 begins at 6 P.M. There are 181.71 miles between Las Vegas and Coachella, so an appearance from Punk would likely be impossible. But that hasn’t stopped fans from grasping for straws. One fan on Twitter mentioned Punk’s recent Instagram story, and how he was shown flying “to somewhere dry and mountainous.”

Punk responded to the fan, shooting the theory down:

Punk had fun with fans about the AEW rumors on Twitter a few days ago as well:

Do you think Punk will be a surprise guest at Double Or Nothing tomorrow?

  • AEW Officially Signs Dean Malenko

    AEW Officially Signs Dean Malenko

Dean Malenko has officially joined All Elite Wrestling as a Senior Producer/Coach. AEW made the news official today.

“AEW announced a multi-year deal with world-renowned coach, producer, and wrestler Dean Malenko,” an AEW press release reads. Malenko will begin working backstage for the promotion at this weekend’s PPV, Double or Nothing.

“Dean Malenko has been a massive force behind some of today’s biggest wrestling stars,” said Cody. “He’s never stopped being a major talent who was part of the ECW revolution as well as a fixture in the cruiserweight movement on Nitro.”

Dean Malenko Joints All Elite Wrestling

Malenko was also quoted in today’s press release.

“It’s not often you get an opportunity late in your career to be a part of building something from the ground floor,” Malenko said. “The freedom to be able to contribute uninhibited will only lend itself to foster creativity and produce an outstanding product. I’m excited about what the future holds for AEW, and I can’t wait to be part of the journey.”

Malenko left WWE in April after having spent 18 years with the promotion. He began his tenure with WWE as part of the Radicalz in 2000. He had his last official match in late 2001.

  • AEW Reportedly To Drug Test Wrestlers

AEW Reportedly To Drug Test Wrestlers

AEW’s first official event takes place this Saturday from the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas. According to a recent report from the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, AEW will have a drug-testing program for their roster.

“I don’t know the details but the full-time contracts the talent signed does include a drug testing provision and there are plans to implement a drug testing program,” wrote Dave Meltzer.

It is not clear yet if the program will be in place in time for Double or Nothing.

AEW To Have Drug Testing Program

Cody has also said that any wrestler hurt in an AEW ring will have their medical expenses covered. At the press conference in Jacksonville earlier this year, Cody said the following:

“I can’t get too specific, but I can tell you straight out of the gate that a lot of concerns the guys have are ‘what if I get hurt in the ring?’ That’s the one thing WWE covers with the Palm co-insurance. We can confirm that anybody that gets hurt in an AEW ring will be 100 percent taken care of by AEW.”

In terms of providing medical insurance, however, AEW will not be in a position to do so, at least not right away. In April, the issue of AEW providing health insurance to wrestlers was addressed by the Wrestling Observer Newsletter.

“I know from talking to people in AEW on this,” Dave Meltzer said on Wrestling Observer Radio recently. “I asked about this thing and the reaction pretty much was ‘we looked into it, we looked into the cost and the cost is real high and the company is already going to be losing a tonne of money starting up’.”

  • Dustin Rhodes Talks Goldust Never Winning World Title, AEW & more…

Dustin Rhodes Talks Goldust Never Winning World Title, AEW & more…

Dustin Rhodes will wrestle his brother Cody tomorrow night at Double or Nothing. The 50-year-old spoke to the Sporting News ahead of Saturday’s big PPV. During the interview, Rhodes spoke about Goldust never winning a world title, what AEW needs to be successful and more.

“(Winning a world title) is a hard thing to accomplish in the business,” Dustin said. “Yes, it’s still a dream of mine. The dream has taken a back seat for now because what I’ve realized about the last 24 years of the Goldust character is that Goldust didn’t need a world title. Goldust went out and entertained, had a good time with the fans and left a lasting impression.”

He continued to say the Goldust character never needed to win a world title.

“Every once in a while, a character comes along like Goldust and you don’t need to put a world title around him. I’m OK with me not winning a world title. I get why people would say I’m underrated, but I disagree. Of course, I want to win a world title and put it on my top shelf. Anybody who wants to get into the business wants to do it. If you don’t want to be in the industry to become a world champion, then you shouldn’t be in the business. I’m a good worker. I’m a good storyteller. I’m a good salesman. And I love to entertain and perform for the fans.”

Dustin Rhodes On What AEW Needs To Be

Dustin also spoke about what he feels AEW needs to be.

“If I’m running a company, I want to see more wrestling, fewer commercials and less talking. The group of kids right now in AEW that have been out there working the independent scene and kicking some ass and taking some names are very creative. It’s not all about the older generation anymore. It is about the young kids, and we have to pass on our knowledge to them and let them rise and shine to the occasion.”

The full interview can be read here.

“This is going to be something special. You have Chris Jericho and Kenny Omega. You have top dogs,” Dustin continued.

  • Dustin Rhodes Discusses Creative Frustrations In WWE

Dustin Rhodes Discusses Creative Frustrations In WWE

All Elite Wrestling (AEW) is set to try and take the wrestling world by storm with their follow up to All In, Double Or Nothing.

One of the major storylines going into this show is the reignited rivalry between Cody and his brother, former WWE Superstar, Dustin Rhodes.

In a recent interview with the WINCLY podcast, Dustin Rhodes addressed his creative frustrations during his last tenure with WWE. He compared WWE’s creative approach to AEW’s, promising that the new promotion will “open a lot of eyes and shock the world.”

“They Never Take Your Idea Seriously”

“I think everybody is rushing to up their ratings and entertainment value. Let’s face it, the creative team in the other company [WWE]… you pitch so many ideas and nothing ever gets done. They never take your idea seriously and then you have to bypass them and go to the boss [Vince McMahon],” Rhodes said.

Dustin spoke about his frustrations in being ignored despite actively coming up with new ideas to try. He claims that this WWE culture, where people are afraid to try new things or to talk to Vince McMahon to discuss ideas, has to stop.

“If something is pitched to you and it’s a damn good angle, why are you scared to go take it to the man [Vince McMahon]? That makes no sense to me; he’s a man. He might be our boss but all he can do is say ‘yes’ or ‘no.’ My frustration was that I didn’t get a lot of answers.”

He adds that, creatively, “As long as I have that hunger, I wanna keep doing it,” revealed Rhodes. “Until that hunger leaves me, I’m not gonna stop creating… It doesn’t matter what I’m doing. If I’m doing a backstage segment, I’m gonna make it the best backstage segment I can.”

Dustin will face off against his brother, Cody, during Double Or Nothing. The event takes place on May 25th from the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Paradise, Nevada.

  • Shane Helms Reveals That He Returned His All In Pay

Shane Helms Reveals That He Returned His All In Pay

DDP had revealed in previous interviews that he made an appearance at All In for free and it appears that he wasn’t the only veteran to do so.

Shane Helms recently had an interview with Fightful where he talked about a number of things and revealed that he had returned the money Cody sent him for his appearance in the show.

Shane who was part of the Over The Budget Battle Royal first discussed how he got booked for the spot, and revealed that his booking for Starrcast led to his All In appearance.

According to him, he met Cody and told him that he would contribute to the show any way he can and continuing on the topic, the former WWE Star revealed that he turned down the money that was sent to him:

“Cody was worried about insulting me by offering me something he thought was beneath me. I was like ‘Bro. No. Whatever you need, I’ll do.’ He paid me and I sent it back.”

Later in the interview, Shane Helms said that the event shined a positive light on the whole business and it showed everyone what is possible when you do things the right way.

Apart from this, Helms also discussed his appearance at the Over The Budget Battle Royal and the spots he pulled off during the match. You can check out his full interview at this link.

  • Hangman Page Announces He Won’t Be Competing At Double Or Nothing

Hangman Page Announces He Won’t Be Competing At Double Or Nothing

The rivalry between Hangman Page and Pac has seen some twist and turns in the last few days and the latest development in the situation might not be a pleasing one for fans.

The Young Bucks dropped a special Thursday episode of Being The Elite titled ‘Who’s The Best Tag Team In The World’ yesterday, just 2 days ahead of Double Or Nothing .

The episode also featured a segment starring Hangman Page who revealed that he will not be allowed to compete at the upcoming event:

“Hey guys, I am checking in because apparently, it’s my responsibility to tell you that due to recent events I will not be allowed to compete at Double Or Nothing.

I am sure that none of you are as disappointed or pissed off about the entire situation than I am. But I will still be at Starrcast on Friday doing meet and greet and I am sure that the entire show in itself will be great.” (Transcription: SEScoops.com)

As Hangman explains his situation a video of Pac’s attack on him during their match in Nottingham is played which suggests that he is not medically cleared to compete at the show.

This is disappointing news for fans who were looking forward to Hangman Page’s match at the PPV and were excited to find out who will be his opponent for the event.

However, the situation with Pac has put the company on the back foot. Since AEW Officials want wins and losses to matter in their company, it’s probably the best to keep Page off the card instead of rushing him into a new rivalry.

  • AEW Double Or Nothing Predictions

    AEW Double Or Nothing Predictions

The time has come for Double Or Nothing!

The movement that began with the successful ALL IN venture last September has led to the launch of the brand new All Elite Wrestling pro wrestling promotion, which presents its’ inaugural event, Double Or Nothing, under the AEW banner this weekend.

AEW Double Or Nothing goes down from the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada on Saturday, May 25th. The card features a highly-anticipated lineup of some of the best matches that can be made without using talent currently signed to WWE.

Headlined by the “Alpha vs. Omega II” showdown between Chris Jericho and Kenny Omega, AEW Double Or Nothing also features the brother versus brother battle years in the making between Cody Rhodes and Dustin Rhodes, The Young Bucks vs. The Lucha Bros and much more.

The show kicks off at 7pm Eastern Time with a one hour pre-show titled “Buy-In,” which features the 21-Man Casino Battle Royale for a future shot at the AEW World Championship. The “Buy-In” pre-show will be available for free via the company’s official YouTube channel, and on Bleacher Report Live.

SEScoops.com writers Ian Carey, Andrew Ravens and Jeff Moss have prepared their predictions for each of the matches scheduled for Saturday night’s big event. Without further adieu, here are the SEScoops.com staff predictions for AEW Double Or Nothing.

Kip Sabian vs. Sammy Guevara (Pre-Show)

Ian Carey: On BTE as of late, it’s become clear that nobody (not even his mother) likes Sammy Guevara. He’s still going to beat Kip Sabian on the pre-show, however. Guevara is the AAA Cruiserweight Champion and will likely be featured prominently in AEW. (Prediction: Sammy Guevara)

Andrew Ravens: Here’s a prime time example of a sleeper match that not many people know of these two guys but Guevara is an extremely talented wrestler who could do some amazing things in AEW. I have Guevara going over. (Prediction: Sammy Guevara)

Jeff Moss: Pre-show? A Cruiserwieght Champion on the PRE-SHOW? You said AEW was going to be DIFFERENT, Cody!! Just kidding of course, you gotta have a pre-show these days and as pre-show matches go, this one ain’t too shabby. Before this match was announced, I wasn’t super familiar with these guys (Though Ian informs me that Guevara is really popular on BTE), but some quick Youtube research shows that they can both go. With Guevara being a champion in AAA, logically he should take this. (Prediction: Sammy Guevara)

    CONSENSUS: 3-0, Sammy Guevara

    21-Man Casino Battle Royale (Pre-Show)

Ian: The winner of this match will face the winner of Omega vs. Jericho to crown the first-ever AEW World Champion. This means the person who wins is someone AEW would have to be comfortable putting in a main event against a top star. Shawn Spears strikes me as someone who could be in that position. Either that or it will be somebody yet to be announced. (Prediction: Shawn Spears)

Andrew: I expect to see some surprises in this match come bell time and the biggest surprise in this contest is likely the winner but no big names come to mind at this time. Thus, with that being said, I actually have MJF winning it here. MJF is someone to keep an eye on and I can’t wait to see how he progresses under the AEW banner as he has the potential to become a top guy. (Prediction: MJF)

Jeff: First off, let me just say I LOVE this concept. It’s a great freshening-up of a classic concept, which is what I hope AEW brings to the table across the board. That said, it’s hard to pick a winner (especially since all the participants haven’t been announced yet). This match should be really fun, with lots of surprises and while my heart wants fellow Canadian Shawn Spears to be the winner, I’d say a more likely candidate is Joey Janela. Janela has the indie crew and vibe to make a good foil for Omega over the AEW title later. Spears should be one of the final men left standing though. I also would not say no to a Glacier victory. (Prediction: Joey Janela)

    CONSENSUS: Various (Shawn Spears – 1, MJF – 1, Joey Janela – 1)

Aja Kong, Yuka Sakazaki & Emi Sakura vs. Hikaru Shida, Riho & Ryo Mizunami

Ian: Look for Aja Kong to be the star of this match. This match will look to showcase the Joshi style of wrestling but in the end, it will be Aja Kong who fans remember and who is given more high-profile matches moving forward. (Prediction: Aja Kong, Yuka Sakazaki & Emi Sakura)

Andrew: Out of all of the matches on this stacked card, I think this will be the bathroom match as I’m not sure how many fans know of these talents, which is fine considering their backgrounds. It’s a toss-up so I’m taking Aja Kong, Yuka Sakazaki & Emi Sakura. (Prediction: Aja Kong, Yuka Sakazaki & Emi Sakura)

Jeff: Much like the three-way dance on the card, this match is going to go a long way to defining what the women’s division in AEW looks like. While I’m not a huge fan of the fact both women’s matches are multi-person deals, this does give a lot of women the chance to show off what they can do on a large scale. I’d expect the winner to be Aja Kong’s team, with Kong going on to feud with Baker over a title in the future. (Prediction: Aja Kong, Yuka Sakazaki & Emi Sakura)

CONSENSUS: 3-0, Aja Kong, Yuka Sakazaki & Emi Sakura

Britt Baker vs. Nyla Rose vs. Kylie Rae

Ian: This one is tough. Kylie Rae will be the wrestler pinned or submitted, it really comes down to whether Baker or Rose gets the win. Baker seems like she’ll be a featured performer but Rose feels like someone they don’t want to beat too early. I’ll go with Nyla Rose on this one but I wouldn’t be shocked if Baker pulls out the win either. (Prediction: Nyla Rose)

Andrew: This is one of the matches I am most looking forward to seeing as Baker and Rae are some of the best prospects in women’s wrestling today. I can easily see AEW building around Baker as their women’s champion thus I have her winning here. (Prediction: Britt Baker)

Jeff: Britt Baker seems like the centrepiece of the AEW women’s roster going forward, so since this is their first chance to shine I expect this match to be an awesome effort from all involved, but Baker takes it in the end. That sets her up as the woman to beat and gives strong motivation to the rest of the division. (Prediction: Britt Baker)

    CONSENSUS: 2-1, Britt Baker

Best Friends vs. Angelico & Jack Evans

Ian: Angelico and Jack Evans are extremely talented but I have to put my money on the Best Friends here based on how much time they’ve been given on BTE. Beyond their signing being announced, we haven’t seen much of Angelico and Evans but the Best Friends have been involved in an angle with the Bucks, blackmailing them to put them on the main show. (Prediction: Best Friends)

Andrew: This match isn’t getting a lot of buzz and it should as all four talents are very good performers. Based on their success in NJPW, I would have to favor Best Friends to get the win here but if these teams feud moving forward, I could see an upset. (Prediction: Best Friends)

Jeff: I love Angelico. I love Jack Evans. But Best Friends, they are not. I see the more established team winning this one, but long-term, everyone wins because it’ll establish two great tag teams for AEW to use going forward. Should be a high-flying fun match though! (Prediction: Best Friends)

    CONSENSUS: 3-0, Best Friends

    SoCal Uncensored vs. Strong Hearts

Ian: SCU got the win over an OWE team when they visited China recently but I feel like the Strong Hearts could pull out the win in Las Vegas. AEW’s association with OWE was one of the first things announced by AEW. I feel as though having the OWE team lose on the first PPV won’t be something they decide to do. (Prediction: Strong Hearts)

Andrew: An interesting match that should be fun and the winner and loser here doesn’t really matter as I think it’s a one and done feud. I have SoCal Uncensored going over. (Prediction: SoCal Uncensored)

Jeff: This is going to be a really fun match, but in the end probably isn’t going to mean much, long term story wise. I see the Strong Hearts taking it here if only to further cement the AEW/OWE relationship. (Prediction: Strong Hearts)

    CONSENSUS: 2-1, Strong Hearts

The Young Bucks vs. The Lucha Bros

Ian: I’m expecting to be the only person on the panel to predict this but I think the Bucks are losing at Double or Nothing. The Bucks beat the Lucha Bros for the titles in Mexico so if they beat them again in Double or Nothing, where do you go from there? It would knock Pentagon and Fenix out of the title picture in the eyes of fans and I don’t think that’s where AEW wants them to be. (Prediction: The Lucha Bros)

Andrew: I have gone back and forth on this one as either team could win. Since the AAA Tag Team Titles are on the line and Lucha Bros have more of a connection with the promotion, I have them winning the titles. This should be the top feud in the tag team division once AEW stars airing on TNT. (Prediction: The Lucha Bros)

Jeff: It’s still super weird to me as a new-to-the-indies wresting watcher to see another promotions titles on the line at an AEW event, but in a way that brings it a pretty fresh new wrinkle, for me at least. It’s been a long time since I’ve seen the Lucha Bros work and I’m really looking forward to it. Picking a winner though, I’d say that the AEW Executives in matches at Double or Nothing are likely to take losses at this first event so that they don’t look like they are booking themselves to win. So the Lucha Bros will take the match and titles here. (Prediction: The Lucha Bros)

    CONSENSUS: 3-0, The Lucha Bros

    Adam “Hangman” Page vs. TBD

Ian: It has to be Moxley, right? Granted, he’s filming a movie right now and might not be available. AEW has said they have a replacement for PAC and it is evidently a good enough surprise that they are saving it for the show. It has to be someone big or it will receive a large groan in response. If it’s not Moxley, I don’t know who could fill that role. Assuming it’s Moxley, he should take the win. (Prediction: Jon Moxley)

Andrew: It will be interesting to see who they get to be Page’s opponent. While it would be a great surprise, I don’t see CM Punk or Dean Ambrose making an appearance on this show. Instead, and this is purely a guess, I think Joey Ryan is his opponent and goes over on Page. (Prediction: Joey Ryan)

Jeff: Lots of rumours about this match. With PAC off the card, they’ve apparently lined up a replacement worthy of a surprise entrance. Jon Moxley? Maybe. CM Punk? Highly unlikely. The Repo Man? My money’s ALWAYS on the Repo Man. In truth though, if the surprise opponent is big enough to be a surprise, they either a) have no one yet or b) have someone big enough that they should win. The Page/PAC plans are scuttled, so Page can take a loss here and not look too bad while they build something else for him to do. (Prediction: TBD)

    CONSENSUS: Various (Jon Moxley – 1, Joey Ryan – 1, TBD – 1)

    Cody vs. Dustin

Ian: This should be interesting as I’m expecting there to be a story told in the match which leads to future matches. It could lead to Cody and Dustin reforming their tag-team or it could lead to a rivalry between the two. Cody should win, however. In the eyes of the fans, both are babyfaces, though Cody walks the line a little sometimes. Either of the two turning full-blown heel throughout the course of the match is entirely possible.
    (Prediction: Cody)

Andrew: This should be the easiest pick on the card as there’s no reason to have Dustin go over here. Cody is the future while Dustin is the past. I also think Dustin will serve as an agent for the promotion going forward. (Prediction: Cody)

Jeff: I have been a life-long fan of the Rhodes family, so this is a bit of a dream match for me. I especially like that there’s no gimmicks, no personas or characters beyond just being Dustin and Cody. It’s a beautiful story too about the future of wrestling meeting the past, passing of the torches and all that. Dusty is going to look down on his one and be pretty happy, I think. As far as winner goes, I think Cody takes. Both Rhodes boys have decent arguments for a win, but I think it will be a long, back and forth match, with Cody taking the W. (Prediction: Cody)

    CONSENSUS: 3-0, Cody

    Chris Jericho vs. Kenny Omega

Ian: Chris Jericho is going to be the top heel in the promotion for the near-future. He will beat Kenny Omega at Double or Nothing to even the series between the two. Since Jericho lost to Omega in the Tokyo Dome and will likely lose to Kazuchika Okada at Dominion next month, a big win would be key for him and I think he’s going to get it. (Prediction: Chris Jericho)

Andrew: I’m not sure if this match will live up to the expectations that fans have for it but at the end of the day, it’s going to be a great match. I do wonder what the finish will be as they can easily visit this feud down the line. I think it would be a mistake if Jericho won here as Omega should be the first AEW champion crowned. (Prediction: Kenny Omega)

Jeff: I don’t know how you pick a “Match of The Night” with a card this stacked, but I’d say this one makes it into the conversation in a walk. Omega is quickly becoming Jericho’s white whale, having lost to him in singles competition at WK12 and then in a 6-Man match on the Jericho Cruise. The winner of this match faces the Casino Battle Royal winner for the AEW Championship at a later date. Jericho is somehow at almost 50, doing the best work of his career, but Omega was born-ready to be AEW Champion. I see Kenny taking this one, winning the title later, or losing it via Jericho to continue their feud. (Prediction: Kenny Omega)

    CONSENSUS: 2-1, Kenny Omega

  • Cody Talks AEW TV, Pyro, Win/Loss Records & More

Cody Talks AEW TV, Pyro, Win/Loss Records & More

All Elite Wrestling Executive Vice President Cody Rhodes sat down with entertainment reporter Chris Van Vliet this week ahead of Saturday night’s AEW: Double or Nothing PPV from Las Vegas, NV. Topics discussed include this being the biggest weekend of his career, AEW’s weekly TV show, pyro, and how win/loss records will impact the promotion.

Cody Talks AEW, Double or Nothing & More

Cody confirmed that the weekly TV show will be 2-hours and AEW will be a touring brand.

“It’s really likely the show is going to be 2 hours. That’s the sweet spot. In terms of the schedule we’ll find out probably within the next few months for sure and it will be in a great spot to be in prime time on TNT, they’ve really set us up,” Cody said. “Now you’ve got to go deliver the bell to bells and the sports-centric. Another thing that is really cool is you’ll be able to find out per market where we’re going to be all around, this isn’t going to be something that is just stationed in one spot.”

Cody also spoke about the AEW World Championship “belt”. He reiterated it will be called a belt as well.

“I’ve said title and I’ve said championship in our little circle now and everyone is really adamant that we say “belt”. On Saturday there is the chance that you might see the greatest World Championship Title that has ever been created and there’s also a chance that I might have showed Chris a picture of it before this interview. He might have got a sneak peek. It’s really great.”

How Far In Advance Are AEW Storylines Planned?

Cody also spoke about how far in advance AEW has planned out their storylines. According to Cody, they have the next 6 months to a year planned.

“I’d say we have a pretty good bearing on 6 months to a year. Exactly that. Long form storytelling is great in every medium whether it is film or TV or whatever it may be to know and work backwards. We’ve got a good, what would I call it, like a syllabus?”

Cody continued, “There’s a syllabus to what we’re going to do but one thing that Matt Jackson is really good about pointing out is some things just catch fire and one thing that we want to do differently than any other wrestling that’s out there is you can’t deny something when it catches. So if something catches, we’re going to push that, we’re going to promote that. If an individual catches, we’re going to push that, we’re going to promote that. And that all starts at Double or Nothing.”

  • News On AEW’s Interest In Jon Moxley, Hangman Page’s New Opponent For Double Or Nothing

News On AEW’s Interest In Jon Moxley, Hangman Page’s New Opponent For Double Or Nothing

There have been lots of rumors regarding Hangman Page’s opponent for Double Or Nothing after Pac pulled out of the event and one of the most interesting names being thrown around is the former Dean Ambrose of WWE, Jon Moxley.

During the latest episode of Wrestling Observer Radio, Dave Meltzer talked about Moxley and he also discussed some other possible opponents for Page at the event.

It was previously said that AEW wants to bring Moxley to the promotion and Meltzer stated that the company officials remain interested in the former WWE Champion.

However, Ambrose is not expected to make his wrestling return before he finishes up his new movie dubbed Cagefighter, which he was recently signed for.

So while it’s possible that he takes a break from his movie to make a one-off appearance at Double Or Nothing, the former WWE Star making his AEW debut at the event doesn’t appear to be very likely.

Though Meltzer still believes that he will end up working with the company down the line and even though he hasn’t been announced for any show officially, it’s likely that Moxley will start working for them by the end of the year.

Regarding the talks of Joey Ryan or CM Punk showing up at the show to compete with Page, it was noted that both of them are booked elsewhere for the night so they are not expected to show up at the PPV either.

Though the company will still have to bring someone big to fill the gap left by Pac and it would be interesting to see who AEW Officials end up choosing as Hangman Page’s opponent for the show.

  • Tye Dillinger Set To Wrestle At AEW Double Or Nothing

Tye Dillinger Set To Wrestle At AEW Double Or Nothing

On Tuesday afternoon, AEW officially announced the signing of former WWE star Tye Dillinger, real name Shawn Spears.

The promotion announced the news in a tweet, which also revealed that he’ll be competing in the 21-man Casino Battle Royale.

He joins Sonny Kiss, Brandon Cutler, Ace Romero, Glacier, Brian Pillman Jr, Sunny Daze, MJF, Joey Janela, Chuck Taylor, Trent Baretta, Dustin Thomas in the match.

Spears also gave an interview with Sports Illustrated where he talked about the decision to sign with AEW, which is where he noted that he believes in what the promotion is doing with their product.

“I believe in providing an alternative for fans, and I really believe that the audience has wanted an alternative for quite some time. This is now the platform to give people exactly what they want, and I am really looking forward to proving myself in AEW.”

It was announced back in late February by the WWE that they had granted his release from the company. This came after he put out a lengthy statement announcing that he had asked to be released from his contract.

Double or Nothing, which is the inaugural show promoted by AEW, will take place at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas on May 25, 2019.
