  • Dave Meltzer Awards 7-Stars To Kenny Omega Vs Kazuchika Okada IV

Dave Meltzer Awards 7-Stars To Kenny Omega Vs Kazuchika Okada IV

Longtime pro-wrestling journalist, historian, and expert, Dave Meltzer, confirmed today that Kenny Omega vs Kazuchika Okada from Dominion last weekend was the greatest match he has ever seen. He awarded the match 7-stars out of what was originally only a possible 5.

All four matches between Omega and Okada have received a 6-star or higher rating from Meltzer.

While assigning a rating or score to a match is controversial, Meltzer’s rating system is the most high-profile of its kind.

    Dave Meltzer’s Match Ratings Explained

Meltzer began reviewing matches with a star-based system back in the tape-trading era. For those unaware, this pre-internet period involved fans connecting via ads in wrestling magazines. Fans would tape (with a VCR) their local shows and mail them to fans outside of the market. Tape trading allowed fans to keep up with promotions from around the world before the internet did.

Meltzer’s match-ratings were originally just to let fans know which tapes they might want to trade for. It wasn’t meant to be used as a way to compare matches or wrestlers. All the same, a 5-star match is usually confirmation that something special has occurred.

Dave Meltzer’s Highest Rated Matches Ever

In total 8 matches have broken Meltzer’s 5-star system by receiving more than 5 stars.

    1. Kenny Omega defeated Kazuchika Okada (c) (NJPW Dominion 2018) 7*,
    2. Kenny Omega vs Kazuchika Okada (time limit draw) (NJPW Dominion 2017) 6.25*
    3. Kenny Omega defeated Kazuchika Okada (G1 Climax 2017) 6*
    4. Kazuchika Okada (c) defeated Kenny Omega (WrestleKingdom XI) 6*
    5. Mitsuharu Misawa defeated Toshiaki Kawada (AJPW June 1994) 6*
    6. Tetsuya Naito defeated Kenny Omega (G1 Climax 2017) 5.75*
    7. Hiromu Takahashi defeated Taiji Ishimori (Best of the Super Juniors 2018) 5.5*
    8. Kazuchika Okada (c) defeated Hiroshi Tanahashi (Wrestling Dontaku 2018) 5.5*

Notable 5-star WWE matches include Bret Hart vs Austin at WM13, Michaels vs Undertaker in the first ever Hell in a Cell match, and CM Punk vs John Cena MITB 2011.

NXT has also produced several 5-star matches in recent years, including Takeover: New Orleans. The North American title ladder match and Gargano vs Ciampa matches from that show each earned 5-stars from Meltzer.

Chris Jericho Talks Ongoing Injury from Kenny Omega Match

Chris Jericho recently sat down with Inside The Ropes as part of his speaking tour of the United Kingdom. As part of an online interview series the new IWGP Intercontinental Champion discussed his bout with Kenny Omega at Wrestle Kingdom from this past January.

During the match Omega hit Jericho with his patented ‘One Winged Angel’ move on top of a steel chair, Jericho described taking that move saying that “The One Winged Angel on the chair really hurt. I’m not just saying it hurt as a joke, it really f****d me up. It hurt my back to where there’s still something that’s not right but whatever. I can never take that move again.

Jericho also went on to list the monetary implications and gains from the #AlphaVsOmega bout, stating that NJPWWorld.com gained a “250% increase” on subscriptions as well highlighting that the Tokyo Dome sold an “extra 15,000 tickets.”

You can check out the interview below and also find more information through the Inside The Ropes Twitter account.

  • WWE and NJPW Stars Pay Tribute to Mitsuharu Misawa

WWE and NJPW Stars Pay Tribute to Mitsuharu Misawa

Today marks the 9 year anniversary of Japanese wrestling legend Mitsuharu Misawa’s passing. Several stars from the likes of WWE, New Japan Pro Wrestling and beyond have posted tributes to one of the greatest performers of all time (you can see these at the bottom of the article).

Misawa made his professional debut in August of 1981 for All Japan Pro Wrestling. Misawa would go on to inherit the position of AJPW President following the passing of Giant Baba in 1999 and he went on to form the now iconic Pro Wrestling NOAH promotion.

Misawa is regarded as one of the greatest performers in the history of the industry, he famously garnered a six star rating from Dave Meltzer for his bout against Toshiaki Kawada in 1994 and his trilogy against Kenta Kobashi is heralded alongside Flair/Steamboat as one of the greatest ever.

Several stars such as Chris Hero/Kassius Ohno, William Regal and Daniel Bryan regard Misawa as one of their in ring inspirations. The Pro Wrestling NOAH promotion also holds a tribute show every June in honour of their founder.

  • Chris Jericho and The Young Bucks Reveal Team Name, Tease Partnering On Cruise

Chris Jericho and The Young Bucks Reveal Team Name, Tease Partnering On Cruise

On the latest episode of “Being the Elite”, the Young Bucks and Chris Jericho teased forming a 3-person team. Jericho and the Jackson brothers toyed around with team names “The Bucks of Jericho”, “Y2Jacksons”, and even “The Bucks of Jericho or is it Y2Jacksons?”.

After much deliberation, Jericho says he is now ready to land on a team name.

    The Bucks of Jericho

Also on a recent episode of “Being the Elite”, the three speculated as to under what promotion they would be able to team together. As they brought up on the show, they work for different companies: Bullet Club and Alpha Club. They then began to tease they would team together on Chris Jericho’s cruise this fall.

There has been some speculation that Jericho won’t be appearing in NJPW for some time. He has said he will not be at the Cow Palace show and others have said his winning the IWGP Intercontinental Championship might be a way for the promotion to put the title on ice. As with anything involving Chris Jericho, however, he’s only going to let out the information he is OK with people knowing. Jericho and NJPW are likely the only parties who know when he will be appearing for the promotion next.

    The Golden Elite

Following the main event of NJPW Dominion over the weekend, Kenny Omega and the Young Bucks reunited. The trio had been out of contact following the Bullet Club civil war this spring and Omega taking time off to prepare for his 4th bout with Okada. Omega chose to hug with the Bucks before he was even handed the IWGP Heavyweight Championship belt.

Omega, the Bucks, and Kota Ibushi then unveiled the four of them will be known by the name “the Golden Elite”. This development is most likely not going over well with Cody or some of the Bullet Club OG faction.

  • Kenny Omega Explains Why He Didn’t Leave NJPW

Kenny Omega Explains Why He Didn’t Leave NJPW

The new IWGP Heavyweight Champion, Kenny Omega, recently spoke to Tokyo Sports. During the interview, Omega mentioned why, despite the many offers to go elsewhere, he chooses to stay in NJPW.

Kenny Omega in New Japan Pro Wrestling

We’ve run Omega’s interview through Google Translate, which doesn’t always lead to the most exact translations. Most of Omega’s sentiment still comes through, however.

“It was a really bout, I still have a pain in the whole body, but that’s why I felt again that I should stay in New Japan,” Omega told Tokyo Sports. “I want to evolve the business of professional wrestling.”

“I was touched by Mr. Takagi who was still watching my game,” Omega continued. “I am thankful to those who cheer for me from the DDT era, and my style is to tell people that I have never seen a wrestling yet I want to increase new fans in the future.”

The Tokyo Sports article then concluded with the following statement:

“It is because Kenny’s constant efforts are widely known to be able to honor his accomplishment beyond nationality and genre. A foreign champion to be loved will be a new leader in the Japanese wrestling world.”

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3841EKmcF_8

    Omega on Pro-Wrestling Revolution

Omega has consistently said he wants to evolve professional wrestling. He expressed the same desire during a pre-Dominion interview he gave to New Japan World.

“You (Okada) may be the best wrestler on the planet. I’ll admit it, you are,” Omega said “It’s not even an opinion thing anymore, this is something that you’ve proven. But you can’t say you are the best performer. That goes to me. If we’re going to move this thing forward, if we’re going to cause this revolution of professional wrestling and make it worldwide and something cool, we can’t just have the best natural wrestler steering the ship. We need someone who captures the imagination, who captures the heart. We need a professional wrestler and a showman. Which is why I’m doing everything in my power, to overtake your natural wrestling ability.”

  • “Switchblade” Jay White Throws Shade On CHAOS Stablemates

“Switchblade” Jay White Throws Shade On CHAOS Stablemates

“Switchblade” Jay White does not appear to be a team player. This is likely the sentiment being expressed by his stablemates in CHAOS following a controversial social media post from the IWGP United States Champion.

CHAOS had a chance to leave Dominion with the IWGP Heavyweight, Junior Heavyweight, NEVER Openweight, Jr Heavyweight tag-team, and IWGP United States Championship gold over the weekend. In the end, however, White is the only member of the stable still carrying a title belt.

White referenced the recent losing skid from the stables’ champions in a Twitter post below:

    CHAOS member, Beretta, responded:

“Switchblade” Jay White, IWGP United States Champion

In the above photo, only White still holds their title. Roppongi 3K lost their titles at the New Beginning in Sapporo but had a chance to win them back at Dominion. They were defeated in Osaka by the Suzuki-Gun team of El Desperado and Yoshinobu Kanemaru, however.

Hirooki Goto lost the NEVER Openweight Championship to Michael Elgin on Saturday in a triple threat match also involving Taichi. Will Ospreay lost his IWGP Junior Heavyweight Championship on Saturday as well. He dropped his belt to the winner of the 2018 Best of the Super Juniors tournament, Hiromu Takahashi.

Finally, Kenny Omega defeated Kazuchika Okada of the IWGP Heavyweight title in Osaka.

    Jay White and CHAOS

White joined CHAOS earlier this year after turning down an offer to join Bullet Club from Kenny Omega. White would then defeat Omega at the New Beginning in Sapporo to win the IWGP United States Championship. Despite joining his faction, however, White has said he wouldn’t mind facing Okada someday. He’s also chosen to come out separately from his teammates during ring entrances, something Kevin Kelly has noted on commentary.

It seems Jay White may have joined CHAOS for his own reasons. He doesn’t appear committed to the stable as much as he is to his own career. We could see White leave the faction in the not too distant future.

  • Tama Tonga Not Happy With Kenny Omega and the Young Bucks

Tama Tonga Not Happy With Kenny Omega and the Young Bucks

Original Bullet Club member, Tama Tonga, does not appear pleased with the events which took place at Dominion. The Young Bucks and Kenny Omega won heavyweight gold in Osaka, Japan on Saturday. Omega defeated Kazuchika Okada to win the IWGP Heavyweight Championship and the Bucks defeated Evil and Sanada to win heavyweight tag gold for the first time in their NJPW careers.

Although the Bucks and Omega are technically his Bullet Club stablemates, Tonga does not appear happy for their success. He has posted several ominous messages on his Twitter recently.

Tama Tonga and the Elite Issues

This isn’t the first time Tama Tonga has appeared less than happy with members of the Elite. Tonga and Omega previously beefed over Omega’s commitment to the BC sub-faction during the G1 last summer. Although the two appeared to squash their differences, Tonga (and at times other members of the Bullet Club OGs as well) may still harbor some resentment.

A further Tweet has led many to believe Tama Tonga is planning something.

    Bullet Club OGs

Although it looked as though the Bullet Club OG sub-faction (Tama Tonga, Tanga Loa, Bad Luck Fale, Yujiro Takahashi, HIKULEO, Chase Owens, etc.) would play a role in the Bullet Club civil war angle, it never played out that way. The Young Bucks and Tama Tonga squashed their beef on an episode of Being the Elite before Supercard of Honor.

Despite this, there are plenty of Bullet Club fans who would rather the NJPW faction be further separated from the American contingent.

The Bullet Club OGs were not on the most recent NJPW tour. Tama Tonga, Tanga Loa, and Bad Luck Fale have not wrestled for the promotion since Wrestling Dontaku 2018. On that show, they teamed with the Golden Lovers to defeat Cody, Marty Scurll, Hangman Page, and the Young Bucks.

  • Chris Jericho Says He Turned Down All-In, New Japan’s US Shows

Chris Jericho Says He Turned Down All-In, New Japan’s US Shows

Chris Jericho recently reiterated that he will never work for another wrestling company in the United States other than WWE. It’s a statement Jericho has been making ever since taking a sabbatical from wrestling in 2006.

The new IWGP Intercontinental Champion was a guest on a recent episode of “Inside the Ropes.” He went into further detail regarding his current situation with both NJPW and WWE.

“I got asked to do Long Beach, I said no, I got asked to do Cow Palace, I said no, I got asked to do All In, I said no,” Jericho explained. “I don’t want to do that.”

Chris Jericho Comments on Working Outside WWE

“(This) is the most I’ve made for the least amount of matches I’ve had in my career,” Jericho said regarding his current situation with New Japan Pro Wrestling. He then stressed he would not be entertaining offers from promotions other than WWE to wrestle in the United States unless they were willing to offer a significant payday.

“I’m not going to work anywhere else unless you wanna pay six f***ing  figures,” he said. “This is Mayweather-McGregor type s**t for me.”

During the interview, Jericho talked about the commitment he made to Vince McMahon and WWE.

“The unwritten rule is I don’t want to go into the States,” Jericho said. “I feel like that would be a real slap in the face to Vince.”

While Jericho seems committed to living up to his promise, one has to wonder how long he can avoid being booked on NJPW’s United States shows. As the company looks to expand internationally, Jericho is a star the company likely wants to promote outside of Japan.

As for Jericho’s relationship with WWE, the last time he appeared on WWE programming was at the Greatest Royal Rumble from Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.

  • Adam Page Explains Why It’s A Great Time To Be A Wrestling Fan

Adam Page Explains Why It’s A Great Time To Be A Wrestling Fan

Adam “Hangman” Page recently made an appearance on The Unsanctioned Podcast to talk about several professional wrestling topics. Page first commented on why he thinks now is a great time to be a fan of professional wrestling:

“After a while, people start to look for alternatives and today it’s easier to find alternatives than it ever has been. It’s very easily accessible. We just launched HonorClub, and soon we’ll get that up and running on Roku, Apple TV, iPhone, all that kind of stuff.

“It’s just so easy to look for something else. And when you look at something else and see our product [ROH] or you see New Japan’s, it’s night and day. So if it’s that easily accessible you just become a fan, you become hooked to it.”

Page then discussed what it’s like being a part of The Bullet Club, and and the faction’s fifth anniversary:

“It’s been great. Bullet Club has been huge. It’s something that’s transcended wrestling a little bit. I’m sure there are people wearing Bullet Club shirts who don’t even know what it is. It’s one of those kind of things, but that’s good. That’s good for us, that’s good for wrestling as a whole.

“Bullet Club’s success for me, it’s been really big for my career. It’s opened a lot of doors for me, doors in New Japan, more opportunities in Ring of Honor. I say all that, but honestly my one takeaway from it all is that it’s given me some of the best friends I’ve ever had in my life. I’ve probably spent more time with Matt, Nick, Cody, and Marty than I have my own wife this year.”

As for the current state of The Bullet Club after Kenny Omega and Cody’s issues with one another, Page believes that the group is fine for the moment:

“I think…Bullet Club is fine. Obviously there are a few issues that need to be worked out. Honestly, we had a bit of a moment at [NJPW] Dontaku for the five-year anniversary of the Bullet Club where we had that 10-man tag and maybe there were some frustrations beyond just Cody and Kenny. We just had to get that out of our systems a little bit and all get together on the same page.

“Cody and Kenny, these are two alphas, it’s just who they are, they’re huge personalities. They want to be ‘the leader’ I guess. My feeling is we’re grown men, why does someone need to be the leader? I’m a grown man and I’ll do what I want, we’re just friends. You know what I mean? But it’s in their blood…at the end of the day I respect both men.”

Page then discussed how Cody has provided him with inspiration by seeing how “on” he is all the time:

“I wouldn’t say there’s any piece of advice or anything like that. But he’s just a person who, legitimately every minute of every day, he’s on. He’s two-a-day at the gym, or coming up with stuff for The Elite, or thinking of long-term ideas for what he wants to do at Ring of Honor or New Japan or for a match that day, he’s just somebody who legitimately is always on, and I think that has motivated me as well a little bit.”

Kenny Omega vs Cody II Announced For Cow Palace, 3 Other Confirmed Matches

New Japan Pro Wrestling has just announced that Kenny Omega’s first title defense of the IWGP Heavyweight Championship will be against Cody. The match will take place July 7th, 2018 from the Cow Palace just outside of San Fransisco.

Omega won the title on Saturday’s Dominion show from Osaka, Japan. He defeated Kazuchika Okada in a Best 2-of-3 Falls match to end his record-breaking title reign.

Cody, who defeated Omega at Ring of Honor’s Supercard of Honor over WrestleMania weekend, appeared on the entrance ramp after Omega’s victory. Despite being invited into the ring by Omega, Cody opted to turn to the back instead of joining the Golden Elite in the ring.

Cody vs Kenny Omega II, NJPW G1 Special in San Francisco

NJPW also confirmed 3 other matches to take place on the show. The newly crowned IWGP Heavyweight Tag-Team Champions, the Young Bucks, will give a rematch to the former champions, Evil and Sanada. “Switchblade” Jay White will also defend the IWGP United States Championship against Juice Robinson.

The former IWGP Heavyweight Champion, Kazuchika Okada, will team with Will Ospreay on July 7th. They will take on the LosIngobernables team of Bushi and Tetsuya Naito. So far, the company has not announced that Chris Jericho will be booked for the show.

Additionally, the promotion announced some of the matches for the upcoming Kizuna Road tour from the 16th-18th. The G1 blocks and participants will be announced during this tour as well.

2 title matches will take place on the Kizuna Road tour. Michael Elgin will defend the NEVER Openweight title against Hirooki Goto on June 17th. Hiromu Takahashi will defend the IWGP Junior Heavyweight title against El Desperado on June 18th, 2018.

The Young Bucks Win Heavyweight Gold, Form New “Golden Elite” Faction

For the first time in their careers, Matt and Nick Jackson have won heavyweight tag-team gold in New Japan Pro Wrestling. The brothers defeated Evil and Sanada at NJPW Dominion in Osaka this morning.

The Bucks, along with Chris Jericho, Kenny Omega, Michael Elgin, and Hiromu Takahashi all became new champions this morning.

Omega, the Bucks, and Kota Ibushi are now referring to themselves as “the Golden Elite”.

    https://twitter.com/MattJackson13/status/1005429405299007489

The new faction might not sit well with Cody. At Dominion last night, Cody teamed with Marty Scurll and Hangman Page to defeat Jushin Liger, Rey Mysterio Jr, and Hiroshi Tanahashi. So far, Cody has not commented on the Golden Elite.

    The Young Bucks Championship Resume

The Young Bucks’ championship resume reads like no one else’s. The brothers first debuted for a major independent promotion in 2007 when they started with Pro Wrestling Guerilla. 6 years later the Bucks began wrestling with Bullet Club in NJPW and have been winning titles ever since.

Here is the Young Bucks’ championship history:

    • 7X IWGP Junior Heavyweight Tag Team Champions (most all-time)
    • 9 combined defenses of IWGP Junior Heavyweight Tag Team Championships (3rd all-time)
    • 706 combined days as IWGP Junior Heavyweight Tag Team Champions (2nd all-time)
    • 3x NEVER Openweight 6-Man Tag Team Champions (2x with Kenny Omega and once with Marty Scurll)
    • Super Junior Tag Team Tournament Winners (2013)
    • 3x ROH World Tag Team Champions
    • 1x ROH 6-Man Tag Team Champions (with Hangman Page)
    • 4x PWG World Tag Team Champions
    • 3x Dynamite Duumvirate Tag Team Championship Tournament Winners (PWG)

In addition to being a decorated team in storyline, the Young Bucks have received numerous accolades from the wrestling media. Matt and Nick Jackson were named the tag-team of the year in 2017 by Pro Wrestling Illustrated. The Wrestling Observer Newsletter has awarded them two 5* matches. The first was a 6-man tag from 2016 when they teamed with Adam Cole and faced Matt Sydal, Ricochet, and Will Ospreay. The 2nd 5* match in their history was against the Golden Lovers at Strong Style Evolved. They have also been awarded the tag-team of the year every year since 2014 by the newsletter.

Following the victory, Omega embraced the Young Bucks, appearing to bury the hatchet with the brothers for the first time since Strong Style Evolved. Cody appeared on the ramp as well but decided to turn back after Omega invited him into the ring.

66th IWGP Heavyweight Champion Kenny Omega

Omega becomes the 28th person to win the title and begins the 66th all-time reign. He’s just the 2nd member of Bullet Club to win the title. AJ Styles won the title for the first time at Wrestling Dontaku 2014.

His post-match speech was brief but he said he can do anything with friends like the Young Bucks and Kota Ibushi. He referred to the 4 of them as “the Golden Elite.”

“Today, I defeated the greatest wrestler on planet Earth. This is a performance art. You can be a great wrestler but if the people don’t care, you aren’t worth a damn,” Omega explained.  “I give you (Okada) all the credit in the world for what you’ve done, the problem is the buck stops here. You’ve taken this company as far as you can domestically and I see so much more for this company. When I look at this company, I see the evolution of pro-wrestling.”

Omega’s 1st defense of the title could come on July 7th, 2018 when NJPW presents the G1 Special in San Francisco.

  • Kenny Omega Dubs Okada The ‘Best Wrestler In The World’

Kenny Omega Dubs Okada The ‘Best Wrestler In The World’

Kenny Omega recently spoke with New Japan Pro Wrestling (NJPW) to promote his IWGP Heavyweight Championship match-up against Kazuchika Okada at NJPW Dominion. The Cleaner first discussed how dominant of a champion Okada is, and how he is the one that has been calling the shots:

“As he made those defenses, one after another, after another, it came to a point where no one would just walk through the curtain and say, ‘I’m going to be the next challenger.’ He has done so much and beaten everyone so many times that he calls the shots! He makes the challenges, he makes the rules. That’s the situation we’re in right now.”

He then talked about taking the first fall in their Two-Out-Of-Three Falls match:

“I know the secret to this match, Okada, and the secret is that first fall. I won’t let you take it. So, if you’re thinking, ‘Hey, this is going to be a 15 minutes here, 10 minutes there, and a crazy stretch and we’re goin’ home!’ That’s not gonna happen. I am not going to give you any freebies. I’m not going to give you a first free fall, if I feel like I need a bit of a rest. You’re not getting the first fall. I’m going to take the first fall and control the pace.”

While Omega admits that Okada is probably the best professional wrestler in the world, he believes that he himself is still the best performer:

“You may be the best wrestler on the planet and I’ll admit it, you are. You’re the best and it’s not even an opinion thing anymore, this is something that you’ve proven. But you can’t say you’re the best performer. That goes to me. And if we’re going to move this thing forward, if we’re gonna cause this revolution of professional wrestling and make this something worldwide and something cool.

“We can’t just have the best natural pro wrestler steering the ship. We need someone who captures the imagination. Who captures the heart. We need a performer and a showman, which is why I’m doing everything I can in my power to overtake you’re natural wrestling ability.”

  • NJPW Dominion 2018 Preview: Omega vs Okada IV, Jericho vs Naito

NJPW Dominion 2018 Preview: Omega vs Okada IV, Jericho vs Naito

This Saturday, New Japan Pro Wrestling presents Dominion from Osaka Jo Hall in Osaka, Japan. The main event is scheduled to be a best 2-of-3 falls match between Omega and IWGP Heavyweight Champion, Kazuchika Okada. Chris Jericho also returns to NJPW to face Tetsuya Naito.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vZIGbS1GRTE

    NJPW Dominion 2018 Preview

    1. El Desperado and Yoshinobu Kanemaru vs. Roppongi 3K (Sho and Yoh)

All 4 members of this match managed a 3-4 record in the Best of the Super Juniors. While Kanemaru and Desperado are likely not pleased to have gone under .500, it was a great showing in the tourney for the members of Roppongi 3K. It was Sho’s first BOSJ tournament and Yoh’s second. Yoh wrestled a few years ago as a young lion in the tournament and went winless.

Kanemaru and Desperado defeated Roppongi 3K for the titles on the NJPW anniversary show on March 6th, 2018.

    2. David Finlay and Juice Robinson vs Yoshi-Hashi and Jay White

The feud between David Finlay and Jay White will never end. This has sort of been insinuated by each guy. Either Finlay or Robinson would move into position for a shot at the IWGP United States Championship by scoring the pin for their team here. This possibility would increase tenfold if they score the pin on White.

    3. Toru Yano and Tomohiro Ishii vs Zack Sabre Junior and Minoru Suzuki

Ishii and Yano are former tag champs and would seemingly love to move back into the title picture. ZSJ has risen up the NJPW rankings considerably this year with his victory in the New Japan Cup.

As for Minoru Suzuki, as he approaches 50 years of age he still believes he’s better than others on the roster. He’s lost both the Intercontinental and NEVER Openweight Championships in 2018, however. Suzuki is without a title belt for the first time in a long time.

    4. NEVER Openweight Championship
    3-Way
Hirooki Goto (c) vs Michael Elgin vs Taichi

In a match that has gone slightly under the radar, Goto will defend his NEVER Openweight title in a 3-way match. Former IWGP IC Champ, Michael Elgin, and Taichi will look to take the title from him.

If Taichi were to be victorious, it would be his first single’s title in NJPW. He’s previously held the jr tag-team titles with Taka Michinoku.

    5. IWGP Heavyweight Tag Team Championships
Evil and Sanada (c) vs the Young Bucks

According to the Young Bucks, they’ve been asking NJPW to move to the heavyweight division for 3 years. In NJPW, anyone under 220lbs is a junior heavyweight, making the cut off 15lbs heavier than for cruiserweights. Whether the Bucks actually have bulked up to over 220lbs or not is currently unknown. Their only match in the division so far was a loss to the Golden Lovers at Strong Style Evolved.

The Bucks’ unmatched record in the junior heavyweight tag division is likely what earned them the title match here (in storyline).

Evil and Sanada won the titles at WrestleKingdom this year after having won the 2017 World Tag League. They haven’t defended the titles much this year as Evil broke his orbital bone on a tour of Australia in February.

    6. Rey Mysterio Jr, Jushin Liger, and Hiroshi Tanahashi vs Marty Scurll, Hangman Page, and Cody

On the final night of the BOSJ, Marty Scurll continued his attack on Hiroshi Tanahashi after the bell. Liger came in to make the save and then a Japanese language promo seemed to indicate a 3-way dance had been organized. Turns out something was actually lost in translation and what Liger was really challenging Scurll for was a 6-person tag match. Liger and Tanahashi would team up with Rey Mysterio and they would face Scurll and two Bullet Club members of his choosing.

Rey originally challenged Jushin Liger for Strong Style Evolved but an injury kept him out of action. Now it appears Rey and Liger will be teammates instead.

    7. IWGP Junior Heavyweight Tag Team Championship
Will Ospreay (c) vs Hiromu Takahashi

Takahashi earned the right to challenge Ospreay for the title by winning the most recent BOSJ tournament. Ospreay failed to reach the finals for the 4th straight year despite going 5-2 in the round-robin. He lost to group A block winner, Taiji Ishimori, on night 1 and that prevented him from going through.

As for Takahashi, winning the tournament after going 4-3 the year before in his first ever BOSJ is a significant accomplishment. The popular member of LIJ has his hands full in Ospreay, however, who has held the title since WrestleKingdom.

    8. IWGP Intercontinental Championship
Tetsuya Naito (c) vs Chris Jericho

Jericho seems to be enjoying the loose vocabulary restrictions available in NJPW. He used the term “F***face” to refer to Naito on the final night of the BOSJ.

During Jericho’s pre-recorded message to Naito on the show, Naito pretended to fall asleep in the ring as it was playing.

These two have been at each other since before WrestleKingdom when Jericho referred to his match with Omega as the real main event. Naito continues to claim he does not know who Jericho is.

    9. IWGP Heavyweight Championship
    Best 2-of-3 Falls
Kazuchika Okada (c) vs Kenny Omega

Kenny Omega recently sat down with New Japan World to discuss his motivation for this match. His comments were pretty interesting.

“You (Okada) may be the best wrestler on the planet. I’ll admit it, you are,” Omega said “It’s not even an opinion thing anymore, this is something that you’ve proven. But you can’t say you are the best performer. That goes to me. If we’re going to move this thing forward – if we’re going to cause this revolution of professional wrestling and make it worldwide and something cool, we can’t just have the best natural wrestler steering the ship. We need someone who captures the imagination, who captures the heart. We need a professional wrestler and a showman. Which is why I’m doing everything in my power, to overtake your natural wrestling ability.”

As for Okada, even though he’s already broken all the records for a single title reign, he still has more to accomplish. Tanahashi has defended the title 28 times across all his reigns with the belt. Okada still trails this number by 3.

Kenny Omega Comments On Facing Kazuchika Okada at Dominion

Kenny Omega will face Kazuchika Okada in the main event of Dominion on June 9th, 2018. It will be the fourth one-on-one match between the two.

Okada defeated Omega at WrestleKingdom 11. They met at last year’s Dominion event as well. That match went to a time limit draw. The last time they met was in last summer’s G1 tournament. Okada suffered a back injury in his previous match against Evil, which allowed Omega a slight advantage and the victory.

Kenny Omega recently sat down with New Japan World to discuss his upcoming title challenge on June 9th.

    Kenny Omega Pre-Dominion Interview

“He’s done so much and beaten everyone so many times that he calls the shots! He makes the challenges; he makes the rules.,” Omega said on his opponent’s record-breaking title reign. “That’s the situation we’re in right now.”

In order to further break the deadlock between the two, their match will be a best out of two of three falls. Omega addressed the stipulation during the interview.

“Don’t give me a handicap, Okada. That makes it too easy for me. Let’s make this fair, 50-50, right down the line. That is why I wanted the best two out of three falls,” Omega said. “I know the secret to this match, Okada. The secret is in that first fall; I won’t let you take it. You’re not getting the first fall. I’m going to take the first fall and control the pace.”

Kenny Omega’s Motivation To Beat Okada

Omega also addressed his motivation for defeating Okada aside from winning the IWGP Heavyweight Championship.

“You may be the best wrestler on the planet.

NJPW Dominion takes place June 9th and airs live on New Japan World.

Rey Mysterio’s Opponent For Dominion Revealed

Rey Mysterio was expected to make his NJPW debut during their Strong Style Evolved event earlier this year but he was pulled from the scheduled appearance due to a biceps injury.

The company later announced that he will be making his debut for the promotion at the upcoming Dominion event and now his opponent for the show has also been revealed.

After an interaction at 2018 Best of Super Juniors final, it was announced that Mysterio will be teaming up with Jushin “Thunder” Liger and Hiroshi Tanahashi to compete in a 6 men tag match:

As far as his opponents are concerned, it was revealed that “The Villain” Marty Scurll will join forces with fellow Bullet Club members Hangman Page and “The American Nightmare” Cody Rhodes to face Rey and others on his debut.

  • Chris Jericho Sends Another Message to Tetsuya Naito Ahead of Dominion

Chris Jericho Sends Another Message to Tetsuya Naito Ahead of Dominion

Chris Jericho appeared in a pre-taped promo segment during New Japan’s Best of the Super Juniors directed towards his upcoming opponent for the June 9th Dominion show; Tetsuya Naito.

The IWGP Intercontinental Champion Naito had just competed in a bout alongside Los Ingobernables members SANADA, EVIL and Bushi before the lights went out in the arena and Jericho appeared on screen.

Jericho made several comments on his recent run with New Japan, particularly the fact that he believes that his match with Kenny Omega at this past Wrestle Kingdom was the ‘main event’ even though their match wasn’t actually the last on the card, that honor went to Naito and IWGP Heavyweight Champion Kazuchika Okada.

Jericho also alluded to Naito’s Wrestle Kingdom 8 bout where the NJPW fans ‘booted’ him out of the main event in favour of (ironically) an IWGP Intercontinental Title match between Hiroshi Tanahashi and Shinsuke Nakamura.

Naito had previously discussed his feud with Jericho via Tokyo Sports, stating that “Jericho lost at Wrestle Kingdom 12, attacked me unprovoked 1/5 (at New Year Dash). He’s not interested in the (Intercontinental) title, he’s interested in me. This can be a non title match.” He went on to state that “Even just the value of Naito transcends the belt, and Jericho is also world famous worldwide.”

You can check out the full promo from Jericho via the tweet below. But be forewarned that there are some strong words from ‘Swearicho.’

  • Best of The Super Juniors Winner Crowned

Best of The Super Juniors Winner Crowned

New Japan Pro Wrestling held the finals of their Best of the Super Juniors (BOSJ) tournament earlier today and the winner has now been officially crowned.

The final of the 2018 iteration saw Taiji Ishimori face Hiromu Takahashi to determine the Number One contender to Will Ospreay’s IWGP Junior Heavyweight Championship at Dominion on June 9th. Takahashi took the win in an enthralling match to win the trophy and cement his place in New Japan history.

Takahashi spoke to the crowd following his win and stated that his “dream is the same as it was when he was here five years ago. To have the junior belt. To win the heavyweight belt while still junior champion. Nothing’s changed! So keep watching Hiromu have more, more, MORE, MORE!! Fun with everyone!“*

This makes the Dominion card in Osaka-Jo Hall even more intriguing as it was widely believed Will Ospreay would win this tournament and go on to face Rey Mysterio for the IWGP Junior title. With Ospreay now set to defend his belt against the ‘Time Bomb’ Takahashi the opponent for Mysterio is still yet to be revealed, leaving many NJPW fans to question who the company have in mind for the former WWE World Heavyweight Champion.

Following Career-Threatening Injury, Former IWGP Tag Champ Set For In-Ring Return

Back in March of 2017 former IWGP Tag Team Champion Tomoaki Honma suffered a career-threatening injury after taking a draping DDT by Jado in the middle of a Six-Man Tag Team match.

After the move, Honma was unable to move anything from the neck down. As a result, the match was stopped. Later reports revealed that Honma had suffered a cervical vertebrae injury and was hospitalized for nearly four months.

New Japan Pro Wrestling (NJPW) later announced that his in-ring return was “tentative” and he forfeited his shot at the IWGP Tag Team Championships. Nikkan Sports would later report that Honma was able to regain function enough to “grasp objects on the upper extremities.”

Despite this, he was still deep in the recovery process and any return to wrestling was described as “undetermined.” The following November, Honma was able to return to training and began taking bumps in hopes of getting back in the ring soon.

15 months later, Honma has fully recovered and is scheduled to appear at the the NJPW Best Of The Super Juniors block final. He and tag team partner Togi Makabe have issued an open challenge to anyone willing to face them at the Kizuna Road show on June 23rd in Yamagata.
