Jeff Cobb Considers ROH To Be In “A Good Spot”

Jeff Cobb has shared his belief that Ring Of Honor (ROH) is “in a good spot” during an interview with CBS Local.

Despite losing a few core roster members to different promotions, Cobb seems confident that ROH will continue and grow. He isn’t the only ROH wrestler to have this sentiment.

“I think we’re in a good spot,” Cobb stated. “A lot of people kind of have their naysayers, as when we had a core group of guys leave, and that’s totally fine. Every major sport has had that. Every major wrestling company has had that. Like LeBron left, “What we going to do?” So you start rebuilding. When they got Kyrie [Irving] and Kevin Love and all this.”

He admitted that, for the short term, losing members isn’t good for the promotion, but having to replace stars has long-term benefits, allowing ROH to develop new talent.

“[…] now we have a new influx of talent coming in, like myself included, guys like Bandido, and RUSH, and Dragon Lee, and Brody King, and PCO, and all those guys. Now they’re stepping up into more prominent roles. And now, we’re giving our ring a modern audience, a brand new roster to play with and see new guys, and new wrestlers, and new matches, and just new everything.”

He continued, “[…] now we get to showcase some more people who may have not had a chance before because we had star-studded lineup prior and we have a star-studded lineup now.”

Jeff Cobb is currently competing in NJPW’s G1 Climax 29 tournament as a Block B participant.

The date and location for the next Ring of Honor pay-per-view of 2019 have been revealed.

On Wednesday, the promotion announced that Death Before Dishonor would take place in Las Vegas, Nevada at Sam’s Town Live in September.

Not only is ROH holding a PPV event in the city at this arena but they will also be holding an international television taping. The pay-per-view event will take place on Friday, September 27th and the TV taping the following night.

Tickets for the two events go on sale Wednesday, July 31 at 10 a.m. Pacific for HonorClub members and Friday, Aug. 2 at 10 a.m. Pacific for the general public.

It was noted in the press release that “Death Before Dishonor has been an ROH staple since 2003 and has featured historic title changes and epic confrontations. This will be the fourth year in a row that Las Vegas has hosted the extravaganza.”

Last year’s Death Before Dishonor pay-per-view event featured an ROH World Title Match between then-champion Jay Lethal and Will Ospreay. Also, Jeff Cobb made his in-ring debut, which saw him destroy Punishment Martinez in less than 90 seconds to win the ROH World Title at the TV taping one day after the PPV.

Although no names were advertised for this show, it was noted that it would feature “all of the top ROH stars.” The promotion will be announcing matches for the show as it gets closer.

Dalton Castle Credits Former Radio Career For Preparing Him For Pro Wrestling

Dalton Castle has credited his past radio job for preparing him for a career in professional wrestling.

The former Ring of Honor (ROH) World Champion recently spoke with Wrestlezone’s Kevin Kallam. It was during their conversation that Dalton opened up about his experiences working as a radio presenter for Q105.7 in Albany, New York. He stated that his time there would influence his in-ring mic style and promo ability.

“Yeah, I spent some time working on an alter rock station for a few years. Then four-five years on an active rock station in Albany, New York. I loved radio,” Castle said. “I was simultaneously starting my wrestling career at the same time I was doing my radio career. One day radio said goodbye and wrestling said we’ll take ya and make ya into a bigger star and life has been better ever since. I loved radio, I loved doing interviews, I got to go to a lot of festivals and concerts.”

He admitted that spending time in a microphone helped him understand the proper ways to address and engage with an audience, something he continues to put into effect in ROH.

“I would say addressing a crowd, talking into the microphone is probably the best thing that radio had prepared me for in the world of wrestling. With a broadcast degree, I know the appropriate length to hold a microphone from your mouth. I know how to not pop my p’s. I am certainly not popping p’s. What am I? Some sort of two years in the business rookie wrestling on the indies popping my p’s into a microphone? Pacing around and pulling on the XLR cable? No, I’m a damn pro.”

Castle recently picked up a victory against Dragon Lee at ROH’s Best In The World PPV.

  • Dalton Castle Comments On ROH Losing “Core” Roster Members

Dalton Castle Comments On ROH Losing “Core” Roster Members

The landscape of Ring Of Honor (ROH) is changing. With talent leaving to explore opportunities in New Japan Pro Wrestling (NJPW), All Elite Wrestling (AEW), and WWE, ROH’s roster has been losing numerous main event players.

Former ROH World Champion, Dalton Castle, addressed this in a recent conversation with Wrestlzone’s Kevin Kellam. He claims to be happy for those seeking new challenges and isn’t worried in the slightest for ROH. He believes the promotion will simply move on and evolve as they’ve done in the past.

“You got to be out of your mind to think Ring Of Honor is at risk right now,” Castle exlaimed. “I’ve only been with the company for about five years, and already I feel like I’ve lived through three of these—where people are like ‘Oh no, they’ve lost those big core members, how ever will they survive?’ We’re gonna be just fine. Ring Of Honor has been around for 16 years and we’ve done this again and again, and we continue turning out the best product we possibly can, the greatest wrestling in the world.”

Castle admits that, although he is sad to see his friends leave ROH, he loves seeing them succeed.

But for him, right now, ROH will remain his home:

“[…] what makes me happy is succeeding and being with Ring Of Honor, I know what makes them happy is a peacock with some muscles putting on a performance of a lifetime. So I’m proud to be here at the moment, and I don’t think I can speak for the entire locker room, but I’ll speak for myself right now: Not worried.””

Dalton Castle recently competed at ROH’s Best In The World PPV where he defeated Dragon Lee.

ROH Reportedly Signs Billy Gunn’s Son Austin

At the River City Wrestling Con last night, Teddy Long made a surprise appearance and introduced WWE Hall of Famer Billy Gunn’s son, Austin Gunn.

Austin arrived sporting a Ring of Honor t-shirt and reportedly declared that he has signed with the company. Fightful say they have been able to confirm that the company has indeed signed Austin.

    https://twitter.com/travisakers/status/1145094008957480961

Austin was seen at All In’s pre-show Zero Hour on 1 September, 2018 where he took part in the Over the Budget battle royal. The 24-year old has made appearances for MCW Pro, Ohio Valley Wrestling, etc since he started wrestling in 2017 after receiving training from his father, Bully Ray, and Devon Dudley.

It’s interesting that Austin has headed the other way instead of joining AEW where his father currently works. Billy Gunn is a coach and a producer for the new promotion, but ROH can be a great ground for gaining experience.

PJ Black Talks About Choosing ROH Over Returning To NXT

After spending time in WWE’s developmental system, PJ Black would burst onto the WWE main roster in a big way. After first taking part in NXT, he would debut alongside other NXT rookies as the Nexus stable.

He would eventually leave WWE in 2015, wrestling around the world and for several companies before signing a deal with Ring Of Honor (ROH).

Formerly known as Justin Gabriel, PJ Black recently sat down with Joey G. from Wrestling Inc. to talk about his past, as well as his future in ROH.

One of the topics of discussion revolved around Black’s decision to not return to NXT, choosing instead to sign with ROH.

“I had an opportunity to go back to NXT. It was the same money for 200 shows more, so really that was a no-brainer for me,” Black said. “I have creative freedom and freedom outside because I do a lot of things outside of wrestling that they let me do whenever. And with creative freedom in wrestling – just to be yourself [is important].”

He points at ROH’s storytelling and the promotion’s Code of Honor as factors that helped his choice.

“I love the storytelling of ROH and the old-school Code of Honor of shaking hands before and after matches. I feel like fans appreciate wrestling different now than they did years ago. …As NXT shows, in-ring performance is very important right now, and that’s what I like about wrestling: it keeps on evolving.”

PJ Black recently aligned himself ROH’s newest stable. This came in the wake of a personal journey, where he decided he didn’t like the person he had become and wanted to make a conscious effort to change, ultimately siding with LifeBlood.

    Speculation On Rush’s Post-ROH Options

Original Los Ingobernables member, Rush, has been tearing through the ranks in Ring Of Honor (ROH) since his debut for the company. Most recently, he defeated former ROH World Champion Dalton Castle in 16 seconds at G1 Supercard.

His burgeoning popularity has sparked some discussion over where Rush could go once his initial ROH contract expires.

According to the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, WWE officials have been interested in signing Rush for a while.

The only thing that could complicate their plans is Rush’s contract with Mexico’s CMLL. This contract doesn’t expire until early 2021.

    WWE Warning

Earlier this year, it was reported that current SmackDown Superstar, Andrade, had essentially warned fellow luchadors, Rush and Dragon Lee. He allegedly warned them against signing with WWE. Rush would eventually sign with ROH.

Andrade’s warning would have come at a time of unhappiness with his position within the company. At the time, the company weren’t utilizing him much since moving him to the main roster.

Things have changed dramatically since this time for Andrade. He has since faced noteworthy opponents, often stealing the show as he did with Rey Mysterio, and is now dating Charlotte Flair.

Despite his unfortunate real-life losses, Andrade is in a much better place professionally than when he first issued his warnings.

Ring Of Honor Re-Signs Jonathan Gresham

Ring Of Honor (ROH) has resigned Jonathan Gresham to a new deal.

Gresham, 31, has appeared for the promotion on numerous occasions prior to signing his first with ROH in 2017. He has been performing for the company more consistently over the past few months. Gresham has faced off against notable talent such Silas Young and Zack Sabre Jr. He has even competed in a 30-minute Iron Man match with former ROH World Champion, Jay Lethal.

It’s reported that he has moved to Baltimore to assume a more active role within the ROH Dojo—the ROH equivalent to WWE’s Performance Center.

    The Octopus

Nicknamed “The Octopus”—thanks to his grapple heavy, mat-based offense that seems to wrap around his opponents—Gresham recently competed in NJPW.

He participated in this year’s Best Of Super Juniors, winning 4 of his matches which granted him 8 points by the end of the tournament.

With a wealth of global experience, Gresham has wrestled for numerous promotions including Chikara, Combat Zone Wrestling, PROGRESS Wrestling. He even had a stint in TNA back in 2016.

It will be interesting to see how ROH utilize “The Octopus” on their roster, especially given his notable push against some of their top talent.

Shane Taylor Names Which WWE Legend Gave Him The Best Advice

Current Ring Of Honor (ROH) World Television Champion, Shane Taylor, has revealed the best advice he has received about the pro wrestling business. Turns out it comes from a WWE legend.

In an interview with ROH’s “10 Questions With…” series, Taylor said that “The best advice would actually be from William Regal, who said, “Go out there and perform like people are always seeing you for the first time.” That stuck with me and is why every match, every city, every venue, the people get the very best of Shane Taylor. No off days, no phoned-in performances. You get me at my best.”

He also claimed that he doesn’t feel he has received any more respect since becoming ROH TV Champion.

“[…] that’s to be expected because Ring of Honor didn’t want me to be champion; the majority of their brainwashed fanbase has only been conditioned to respect a certain few criteria in this sport, none of which I adhere to. […] Whether people like it or not, understand it or not, Shane Taylor is the man in ROH.”

Taylor addressed former champion Jeff Cobb, who is now chasing a World Championship opportunity rather than a rematch for the TV title.

“Cobb is a grown man. He knows what our first two bouts were like, so I’m not shocked. I think this situation is a lot like Frazier/Ali where eventually we’ll have to meet up and I’ll have to prove to him who the man is.”

Shane Taylor is scheduled to defend his championship against Bandido at ROH’s Best In The World PPV. The show takes place on June 28th in Baltimore, Maryland from the UMBC Event Center.

Bully Ray Issues Statement On Fan Incident At ROH Event

Bully Ray has issued a statement on the recent incident with a fan that caught fire on Monday through social media.

Not only did Ring of Honor comment on the situation by noting that they would be conducting an internal review over the next 48 hours to determine the appropriate actions but also Ray. You can see their statements here:

ROH General Manager Greg Gilleland: “ROH has always taken fan-first approach, with fan experience being at the forefront of all of our live events. We consider this to be very serious and will be conducting an internal review over the next 48 hours to determine the appropriate actions.”

The incident was brought to the attention of the public by the fan who told his side of the story after attending a recent Ring of Honor show. The fan voiced his take about the incident on his Twitter account where he noted that he was booing Allure (Velvet Sky, Angelina Love and Mandy Leon).

He and the group would then start to exchange words to the point that the fan alleged he was spit on. Another exchange with the fan and group happened later in the show.

This is when Ray’s involvement began. Minutes later, the fan was approached by security, who asked him to go to the backstage area. This was when Ray eventually appeared and security left the room. Ray told him to respect the women and ended the conversation by telling him to go be a fan.

It looks like a Ring Of Honor fan found out first-hand that when it comes to Bully Ray and his woman — you do not mess around.

Twitter user Osh Kosh Big Josh (@xIAMHOLLYWOODx) posted a long statement on his feed on Monday, sharing a story about a wild alleged incident he had with the WWE Hall Of Famer backstage at the ROH: State of the Art show in Portland, Oregon on Sunday evening.

The fan claims that after he talked trash to some of the women talent during the opening dark match, he and Velvet Sky ended up getting into a heated exchange.

This is where things reportedly got intense.

According to the fan, after the verbal exchange concluded, he was approached by security. The security led the fan to a room backstage at Portland State University’s Viking Pavilion, the site of Sunday’s “State of the Art” event.

Big Josh then claims that Bully Ray entered the room, noting he was still in his ring gear and that he was clearly visibly angry. He wrote that Bully Ray got in his face and proceeded to lecture him like a mischevious child being scolded by their parents.

“Hey, I heard there was incident tonight with you and some of the girls,” Bully Ray said to Big Josh, according to a multi-tweet transcription of the alleged behind-the-scenes incident. Big Josh says his response was, “Uh … yeah? I guess.”

“So here’s the deal,” Bully Ray continued. “You’re done talking down to them. You need to treat them with respect. Don’t be saying anything you wouldn’t say to your mom, you got it?!” Big Josh claims he responded by saying, “Sure, yes sir. Yeah, I understand,” to which Bully Ray concluded, “End of [conversation]. Go be a fan.”
