Matt Hardy Comments on ROH Wrestling Style

Matt Hardy, fresh off signing a ROH contract, gave an interview with ROHwrestling.com, and revealed what it is about Ring of Honor that keeps bringing him back. This will be Hardy’s third stint in with the promotion. His first was in 2005, after having been released from WWE. Hardy then returned again to the company from 2012-2014.

Now, in 2017, Hardy is at the peak of his popularity and back for another ROH run. When asked what it is that he enjoys about the company, Matt had this to say:

“Ah, yes, my mortal vessel has had a couple of runs in the Honorable Ring (ROH) before I made my return in New York City. Something I’ve always enjoyed about ROH is that they’ve really stripped wrestling down to its true essence. In its essence it’s great athleticism and storytelling and that is what they do better than anyone else. They’re mantra of being the best wrestling on the planet is very true to form. ROH truly does pro wrestling in a modern form better than anyone else right now. I am a wrestling fan still at my core because I inhibit this vessel, so that makes me love ROH.”

The full interview can be found on ROH’s website here.

    Matt Hardy Contract Length

It is not currently known how long of a contract Matt and Jeff Hardy have with ROH. Some speculation is the deal is only a short-term one to keep the Hardys on TV leading up to an eventual return to WWE programming. Others feel the Hardys know they won’t get the same creative freedom they are enjoying now from WWE, and will simply continue their act on ROH programming and indie events for as long as they are able to make good money doing so.

Matt Hardy Threatens To DELETE Vince McMahon (Video)

TMZ has published a new video of Matt Hardy, who rarely (if ever) appears out of character these days. Broken Matt addressed his signing with the “Honourable Ring” (ROH) and how he feels about his former employer, Vince McMahon.

Broken Matt Hardy and Brother Nero to WWE

Hardy claims that he asked ROH for double what the Young Bucks were making (probably not true) and has been in contact with every promoter from every major promotion in the world. The length of Matt and Jeff’s ROH contracts is unknown at this time and it’sstill possible to see them in WWE in the not too distant future.

Hardy says that he has Vanguard-1 monitoring WWE at all times, but also mentions he’s willing to DELETE Vince McMahon should he ever need to.

  • ROH/NJPW Honor Rising Night 1 Preview

ROH/NJPW Honor Rising Night 1 Preview

For the second year in a row Ring of Honor is holding two shows in two nights at Tokyo’s Korakuen Hall. The shows last year played an important part in ROH angles for several months afterwards.

Last year’s shows involved 2 titles changing hands. Tomohiro Ishii defeated Roderick Strong for the ROH TV Championship in the main event of night 1 last year. The next night Omega and the Young Bucks defeated the Briscoes and Yano for the 6-Man Tag Team Championships.

    Honor Rising 2017 Night 1 (Feb. 26th 6:30pm Tokyo time, 4:30AM est.)

David Finlay, Juice Robinson, and Kushida vs. Gedo, Jado (CHAOS) and Silas Young
Finlay and Robinson have both been moving up in the rankings as of late, but Juice more than Finlay. In the short time that the former CJ Parker has been in NJPW he has gone from the bottom of the ranks to a solid mid-carder. He now regularly tags with Hiroshi Tanahashi and other big name NJPW guys.

Never Openweight 6-Man Tag Team Championships
Bushi, Evil and Sanada (Los Ingobernables)(c) vs. Delirious, Justin Liger and Tiger Mask
ROH booker, Delirious, likes to get involved in these shows. In previous years he had wrestled Gedo, who just so happens to be NJPW’s booker.
The 6-man championships change hands frequently. No team has held onto the belts for more than 2 title defences. Los Ingobernables won the belts on February 11th after defeating Tanahashi, Nakanishi and Taguchi.

Bad Luck Fale, Tama Tonga, Tanga Roa and Takahashi (Bullet Club) vs. Hirooki Goto, Kazuchika Okada, Will Ospreay and Yoshi-Hashi (CHAOS)
A good old fashioned CHAOS vs Bullet Club match. There isn’t really any upcoming NJPW or ROH match this is setting up for down the line. It’s just a match.

War Machine vs. the Young Bucks
The Young Bucks are the ROH Tag Team Champions, but this match appears to be non-title. If War Machine wins they’ll get a title shot down the road however, ROH rarely fails to follow through on such things. The live reaction to this match should be interesting, as NJPW fans don’t see heavyweight tag teams take on jr heavyweight tag teams too often.

Dalton Castle, Hiroshi Tanahashi, and Taguchi vs. Hiromu Takahashi, Tetsuya Naito (Los Ingobernables) and Punisher Martinez
Kevin Sullivan’s protege, Punisher Martinez, joins forces with Naito’s Los Ingobernables. We’ve seen Naito be less than receptive to ROH wrestlers trying to join forces with his faction in the past however. Jay Lethal seemed to want to align with the group, but Naito turned on him in the end.
Dalton Castle and Taguchi will probably do a lot of comedy here.

Cody (Rhodes) and Hangman Page (Bullet Club) vs. Jay Lethal and Katsuyori Shibata
Cody still hasn’t done much in Japan, so it’ll be interesting to see what the reaction to him is like. Shibata is preparing for an eventual match with Minoru Suzuki, which was played up recently on the Togi Makabe anniversary show.
Hangman Page sure has moved up the rankings in ROH and NJPW this last year. He even beat Jay Briscoe clean on a PPV.

Adam Cole and Kenny Omega (Bullet Club) vs. the Briscoe Brothers
Adam Cole, leader of ROH’s Bullet Club, tags with the leader of NJPW’s Bullet Club, Kenny Omega. Neither guy really refers to themselves as the leader, but they are clearly the top guy from the faction in their respective organizations. Omega lives in Japan and is a full-time NJPW guy, and Cole lives in the states and is a full time ROH guy. This match will most likely be played up as ROH vs. Bullet Club, seeing as the Briscoes are ROH originals.

While Adam Cole was gloating over The Bullet Club’s win over Jay Lethal, Bobby Fish and The Briscoes, Christopher Daniels, who was on commentary got into the ring to attack Cole. Daniels then grabbed a pair of scissors and hair clippers to shave Cole’s head.

Kazarian rushed to the ring to help his partner Christopher Daniels, but instead revealed a Bullet Club t-shirt and beat the crap out of Daniels with the rest of his new Bullet Club brothers.

  • Kevin Kelly Leaving Full-Time Position with ROH

Kevin Kelly Leaving Full-Time Position with ROH

Kevin Kelly is leaving his full-time position with Ring of Honor in order to free-up his schedule for other projects, namely NJPW. While Kelly has given his notice to the company, it does not necessarily mean he is done as a broadcaster with ROH. It is believed he intends to work on more of a freelance basis, which would include calling shows for both ROH and NJPW.

Ring of Honor has recently lost two members of their broadcast team, Nigel McGuinness and Steve Corino, to WWE. McGuinness recently replaced Corey Graves on NXT, and was also an announcer for the company’s recent UK tournament. Corino is working as a trainer in developmental.

In addition to working for ROH since since 2010, Kelly was a broadcaster with the WWE from 1996-2003.

    ROH and NJPW Joint Shows

Kevin Kelly will be flying to Japan shortly to team with new NJPW broadcast partner Don “Cyrus” Callis, for the company’s event on February 5th 2017. Ring of Honor will also be heading to Japan later this month for their second annual “Honor Rising” shows at Korakuen Hall. It is assumed at this point that Kevin Kelly will still be on commentary for those shows.

At last year’s ROH Korakuen Hall shows Roderick Strong lost the ROH TV title to Tomohiro Ishii on night 1. Then on night 2 last year Jay Lethal successfully defended the ROH Championship against Tomaki Honma.

Main Event for ROH Supercard of Honor XI Announced

Ring of Honor have announced that 3-time ROH Champion Adam Cole will be defending his title against Dalton Castle at the Supercard of Honor event on April 1st. ROH released the following press release for the match:

When Dalton Castle arrived in ROH for the 2015 Top Prospect Tournament, he immediately turned heads with his flamboyance and unorthodox style.

Since then, “The Party Peacock” has not only proved to be one of the most entertaining performers on the roster, but also one of the toughest and most skilled.
With The Boys by his side, the crowd-pleasing Castle has steadily climbed the ranks in ROH, and now he could be on the verge of becoming ROH World Champion.

At the monumental Supercard of Honor XI in Lakeland, Fla., on Saturday, April 1, Castle will receive his first shot at the ROH World Title, which is currently held by the only three-time champion, Adam Cole.

Whether it’s Cole or someone else who enters Supercard of Honor as ROH World Champion, they would be wise not to underestimate Castle, who has scored victories over the likes of Roderick Strong, Colt Cabana and Japanese legend Jushin “Thunder” Liger in singles matches.

The last time Castle and Cole were in the ring together, it was Castle who got his hand raised in victory. On a recent episode of “Ring of Honor Wrestling,” the team of Castle and reDRagon defeated Bullet Club’s Cole and The Young Bucks (Matt and Nick Jackson) in a six-man tag match.

ROH News: McGuinness Resigns, Dream Tag Bout Signed For ATL, Ospreay At Manhattan Mayhem

A few headlines have filtered out of ROH headquarters today; Nigel McGuinness has ‘resigned’ as ROH Matchmaker. ROH have released the following statement regarding Nigel’s decision to leave his post:

“Earlier this evening, with heavy hearts, Ring of Honor officials accepted the resignation of ROH Matchmaker Nigel McGuinness.

Speculation surrounding McGuinness’ sudden resignation has begun to boil among ROH officials. While some chastised his leniency toward Bullet Club’s behavior in the summer, others believe that now McGuinness may be under extreme duress from Bullet Club’s Adam Cole for changing the stipulations of the Final Battle main event just days in advance.

One of ROH’s all-time greats, the former ROH World Champion has resigned. ROH management has announced it is forming an executive committee to oversee matchmaking in ROH. We wish Nigel McGuinness the best of luck in his future.”

Newly signed ROH star and Bullet Club member Cody Rhodes has been booked to appear alongside Adam Cole against ROH Champion Kyle O’Reilly and Jay Lethal when ROH appears in Atlanta 01/14/17.

As reported recently Ring of Honor have decided to bring back the Manhattan Mayhew event next year, today they announced that British sensation Will Ospreay will be at the event:

Matt Sydal Arrives Home in the United States, Says He’s Done with NJPW

After almost three months in custody after being caught trying to bring liquid marijuana and drug paraphernalia into Japan, Matt Sydal (formerly Evan Bourne in WWE) has tweeted that he is back at home  in the United States:

Sydal spoke to our friend Ryan Satin at Pro Wrestling Sheet, telling him that “It’s all finished. I received probation, which applies only if I’m in Japan. So no actual punishment. I was just held until they had the trial. I wasn’t ever in jail either, only police detention centers and the Osaka immigration detention center.” He added that “I’m no longer with NJPW. I still love the Japanese people, but I won’t be working there in the near future.”

Before news of what actually happened broke, someone with access to Sydal’s Twitter account tweeted that he had “passport trouble” and ended up getting stuck in Hawaii. The tweets have since been deleted. While sneaking drugs in through customs is risky anywhere, Japan is known to have an especially rough stance on marijuana.

Details On A Hardy Boyz vs. Young Bucks Match

Matt Hardy made a surprise appearance at Friday night’s ROH Final Battle PPV and issued a challenge to The Young Bucks. With help from his aerial assault robot Vanguard 1, Hardy delivered a message to the ROH tag team champions and invited them to participate in the upcoming tag team Apocalypto match at TNA’s upcoming Total Nonstop Deletion special.

The description of Matt’s Youtube states that WWE RAW tag team champions The New Day are also invited.

Myself and Brother Nero have been mandated by the 7 Deities to prove we are The Greatest Team in all of Space and Time. That means we eventually must face The Bucks of Youth and The Day of New, the other tag team champions. Both these teams, as well as all notable teams, are invited to Total Nonstop DELETION on 12/15/16 to compete in Apocalypto.. A match that will determine the greatest tag team of all time.

While a match against the New Day won’t be happening any time soon, there are plans for a Young Bucks vs. Hardy Boyz match. The nature of ROH and TNA’s working relationship is unclear at this point, but we’ve heard the Bucks and Hardy’s showdown is expected to take place during WrestleMania weekend in Orlando at ROH’s Supercard Of Honor show.

Update: Broken Matt says he plans to call out the Young Bucks this Thursday on Impact.

  • Update On The Young Bucks’ Status With ROH

Update On The Young Bucks’ Status With ROH

After successfully defending the ROH World tag team titles last night at Final Battle (Results), it’s looking like the Young Bucks will be staying with Ring of Honor and New Japan Pro Wrestling for the next two years.

Update: Dave Meltzer of the Wrestling Observer Dave Meltzer is now reporting the Young Bucks have signed a 2-year deal with ROH.

The Young Bucks have been on WWE’s radar for some time and were offered contract with terms similar to Bobby Roode’s. According to a source close to the situation, the Bucks were looking for ‘special treatment’ from WWE. The talks died down and they used the offer from WWE to get more money and creative control from ROH/New Japan. The deal is said to be significantly better than their current arrangement.

Many top ROH stars have contracts coming due at the end of 2016 and the Young Bucks have confirmed they’re among that group. Pro Wrestling Sheet broke the news earlier this week that ROH had offered strong deals to keep Nick and Matt Jackson on board. During a Friday appearance on the Busted Open radio show on SiriusXM, the Bucks commented on their futures:

“Our current contract [with Ring of Honor} expires on December 31st. These are our final shows for Ring of Honor for the year…Philadelphia could be, who knows? We don’t know. There’s offers on the table. We’re in a good spot right now. We’re in a really great position where we feel like we have a lot of power. We know that we’re probably the top act here, or at least one of them along with our buddy here [Adam Cole] and the Bullet Club.

A lot of people want us, so it’s cool, and we’re happy. We’re happy to be, we’re humble to be in the position we’re in, we have families. First and foremost, we want to get what we feel like we deserve and we want to be able to come home and feed our children at the end of the day. That’s the game plan, just getting what we feel like we deserve.”

  • Report: ROH Wrestler Leaving Company At The End of 2016

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jORr5uWzOQA

It looks like one of pro wrestling’s most spectacular high flyers is a couple months away from becoming a free agent. PWinsider (NSFW ads) is reporting that ACH will be leaving the company at the end of the year. This appears to stem from his promo a couple weeks ago at an AAW show in the Chicago area, where he cut a post-match promo about how his “wife” doesn’t appreciate  him and he needs to leave her for the girl who always did, with the implication being that the wife was ROH and the other girl was AAW or independent promotions in general.

According to the PWInsider report, this got ACH a bit of heat since he’s under an exclusive ROH deal and needed the office’s permission to work on the AAW show. There was also a belief that ROH may very well have covered his travel to Chicago for the show (ROH was running in the market a few days later), which made matters worse. The two sides met to try to resolve the issues, and it looks like this is how that meeting turned out.

Analysis: This is not the first time there have been stories going around about ACH not being the most professional in his dealings with promotions. If he’s looking to just do indies, he’ll probably do fine, but you have to wonder if WWE will be skeptical of signing him based on how he acted out at the AAW shows.

WWE is currently doing market research to gauge interest in a multi-tier system for the WWE Network.

The 1st tier would be free, according to Dave Meltzer on Wrestling Observer Radio. It would be limited to 5 hours of viewing a month, the content would include small video clips, access to the full archive of content and the live stream. Live PPV, NXT and other live specials would be blacked out.

The 2nd tier would be $4.99. This plan is exclusive to phones and tablets. It would include the big 4 PPV events (Royal Rumble, Wrestlemania, Summerslam and Survivor Series), NXT on demand not live, unlimited viewing of the full archive of content as well as the live stream but will not include a possible new Cruiserweight show.

The 3rd tier would be $9.99. This tier is basically the standard one that is available now with some possible undisclosed upgrades.

The 4th and final tier would be $14.99. It would include all the above as well as content from other promotions not under the WWE umbrella. Dave specifically mentions TNA and ROH, WWE is interested in the full library from both companies but would also like to air live events. He goes on to say there has been rumblings about the interest in Ring Of Honor specifically.

There would also be possibilities of working out deals with several other independent companies such as EVOLVE, or PROGRESS out of the UK.

Additional benefits of this premium tier would be the ability to vote for WWE Hall Of Fame candidates and exclusive opportunities for ticket pre sales and talent meet and greets.

This would be very interesting and could really change the landscape of independent wrestling if WWE started airing this content on their network. It could potentially put more eyes on companies that might not have been able to get that type of exposure otherwise.

Discussion: Let us know your thoughts on this potential tier based system and which one would you sign up for, if any.
