  • Roderick Strong On His Feud With Jay Lethal, IWGP Title Match With Okada

Ring Of Honor star Roderick Strong recently appeared as a guest on The Two Man Power Trip Of Wrestling podcast to talk about a number of current topics. Below are some of the highlights from the interview.

On his feud with Jay Lethal and their recent ROH title match: “It was two guys going out there with something to prove and nothing got settled. I know Jay Lethal is probably not happy about this but August 21st I have my rematch and we can finally settle this.”

On the chemistry between the two: “I think it’s the ability to be aggressive. I’ve said in promos that I like to push the pace and I really do. In the ring there are certain matches where I like to just challenge my opponent and not in a bad way to try and embarrass them but I like to challenge somebody enough to up their aggression. Jay is a classic wrestler like me in a sense that you feed off of that and respond to it well. He is a fantastic professional wrestler that really loves the sport and understands it and I feel I’m the same. A lot of it is reaction based and I think that is what makes our chemistry so unique.”

On what is the key factor to building a true rematch: “It’s going to be a lot more intense than our first match up. Obliviously we didn’t settle what we needed to be settled and when you have a first match up like that in this kind of situation and you set the bar so high, it’s a challenge for you to go in there and see if you can top it and the thing that is great is being able to go in there with someone like Jay Lethal. We are very competitive and we want to be considered the best in the world (both of us) doing what we do. I think we are going to try and make that even better but different.”

On how to prepare for his upcoming IWGP Title match vs. Kazuchika Okada: “It’s another situation of facing somebody that many people consider the best or one of the best in the world. I am a competitive person so for me to see the match ups he has had with other people and the type of wrestler he is it’s a challenge for me to top the type of stuff he has done with other people around the world. It has people talking about us, having one of the best match ups in Ring of Honor history if not in the world and to prove that I am one of the best wrestlers currently participating in professional wrestling today.”

On if he sees himself as the MVP of Ring of Honor: “Honestly, the way I look at stuff is I go out there and do my job. My goal when I started wrestling is go at the highest level possible and I feel like I’m just starting to hit the prime of my career. For people to consider what I’ve been doing to be the MVP or (this) being the best year of my career, it makes me happy but it also motivates me to make the rest of this year and the rest of my career even better. I am always hard on myself and I’m trying to just improve as much as I possibly can. If it’s up to me, you guys have seen nothing yet.”

  • ROH Issues Video & Statement On The Passing Of “Rowdy” Roddy Piper

Ring Of Honor posted the above video tribute to the late WWE Hall Of Famer “Rowdy” Roddy Piper, who passed away last week from cardiac arrest at age 61.

Piper appeared at an ROH event in Nashville, Tennessee back in January of 2014, and in the video, Piper is featured with Kevin Owens, The Briscoes and other ROH performers.

Additionally, ROH issued the following statement on Piper over the weekend:

We at Ring of Honor are extremely shocked and saddened at the sudden passing of the legendary “Rowdy” Roddy Piper.

A true icon in professional wrestling, “Rowdy” Roddy Piper was a silent adviser to many, passing on his invaluable wisdom. An amazing man who will be missed by those who were lucky enough to work with or get to know him.

We extend our sincerest condolences to the family, friends and colleagues of “Rowdy” Roddy Piper.

  • Moose Talks About Re-Signing With Ring Of Honor

Ring Of Honor star Moose recently appeared as a guest on the Chad Dukes Wrestling Show. Below are some of the highlights of the interview.

On re-signing with ROH: “Ring of Honor gave me my very first chance. They helped create the brand ‘Moose.’ So I mean it was an easy decision, they told me that they were going to stick by me with whatever decision I made and I just felt like I’m a real loyal guy, so they helped me get get me to where I’m at now so I’m going to return the favor.”

On the pressures of living up to prior former football playing wrestlers and cutting ties with football: “There’s the goods and there’s the bads. You’ve got Goldberg, Wahoo [McDaniel], Ernie Ladd, greats. So there was the pressure of can I be as good as those guys and then you have some of the guys who wasn’t so good that came in from the football world. There was also the pressure of, “Man what if I suck as bad as those guys.” So I mean it’s big pressure, the best thing to do is just work my ass off, work as hard as I can, so that I can be up there with the Wahoos, the Ernie Ladds and the Goldbergs and other guys.”

“When I left football I decided I want to leave that behind me. I don’t want to have any teases about going back even though I knew there wasn’t going to be one but I didn’t want to have that maybe so I shut the door completely. I don’t follow it, which sucks because I have a lot of friends in the football world and I don’t get the watch their stuff because I’m scared of my watch it and go, “Oh man I miss football I want to go back and play.” So I kind of like shut the door.”

  • Jay Lethal On Being The Face Of ROH, Wrestling 60-Minute Draw & More

Ring Of Honor star Jay Lethal recently appeared as a guest on the Chad Dukes Wrestling Show. Below are some of the highlights of the interview.

On being the face of ROH: “I feel like I won the lottery because what a perfect time to be the world champion of Ring of Honor with all the momentum from Sinclair and everything and now the acquisition of being on Destination America and with the inevitable downfall of the other company who assumed the number two slot, because we are the number two wrestling company in the world right now. But yeah it’s an exciting time I feel like I won the lottery.”

On wrestling a 60-minute draw: “I don’t believe there’s any way to prepare for that. It’s like, ‘Oh, I’m a runner. So I’m going to go practice in the gym on the treadmill and on the elliptical.’ I have actually run on the treadmill and I’ve run on elliptical and then I decided to run through my park at home and let me tell you there’s no substitute for really running. When there’s something that you need to get done there’s no substitute other than actually doing it. So there was really no preparing to have a sixty-minute match, it was tough.”

“It’s one of those moments where you have to dig down deep and pull everything that you have and I swear by the end of that match I had nothing left. There was nothing left in the tank, so to speak.”

Check out the complete interview at ChadDukesWrestlingShow.com.

  • Kazarian On Working Samoa Joe’s Final ROH Match, Daniels, AJ Styles & More

Former TNA and current Ring Of Honor performer Frankie Kazarian recently appeared as a guest on The Two Man Power Trip Of Wrestling podcast. Below are some of the highlights from the interview.

On The Addiction as a team and working with Christopher Daniels: “It is hard to put in one short answer. The guy is my best friend, I’ve known him for pretty much the better part of the 17 years of my career. It’s great having somebody that you can rely on not just in the context of a wrestling match but also on the road, traveling here and there. We are best friends, tag team partners, our train of thought is very similar when it comes to wrestling matches and the whole business. It’s a real confidence booster knowing he’s there and takes a lot of stress off knowing how professional he is and knowing where we both are going to need to be. It’s almost like we are on cruise-control at this point, we know each other so well. When it comes to tag team wrestling all those thing make an awesome package.”

On being revealed as the KRD, what makes this story different: “If I can say that one thing Ring of Honor is not lacking, but is not necessarily focused on is angles like the KRD one and Ring of Honor is top notch in every aspect, especially match quality and there is nothing to compare it to. But, angles being played out like that is something you necessarily saw a lot on Ring of Honor previously and being a fan of cool well put together angles I was psyched to be a part of it. I was thrilled to become tag team champions that way and I hope that now on Destination America we can continue to do some outside-of-the-box kind of things in terms of Ring of Honor’s previous business model.”

On if he prefers to work babyface or heel: “Without question we are in our wheel-house when are bad guys. The act really got some steam when we were doing dastardly things over in TNA in 2012. It really fits our personalities so much better portraying the bad guys, it’s just right and it’s us. We got a lot of real positive reactions when we came to Ring of Honor and I think because people were happy to see us but after a while it’s going to wear off and if any team is going to be the working heels and the bad guys of the company I can’t think of anyone better then Chris Daniels and myself.”

On working Samoa Joe’s final Ring of Honor match in NYC with AJ Styles and Daniels: “Those three gentleman stood up with me at my wedding. That says it all right there. Those are three guys that I’ve traveled with and known longer than anyone else in the business and are my three best friends in the business. We all have come up together, all of our families know each other so it was a very special moment. The match we knew match quality wise was going to be there but it was afterwards really taking it in and I got to share the ring one last time with my three best friends in the business for Ring of Honor especially it was really cool and I was very aware because I used to take moments like that in my career for granted. The whole day was a great moment, especially after the match when Ring of Honor gave Joe the sendoff that he so richly deserved.

  • Backstage Update On ROH Losing Their Prime Time Slot On Destination America

After less than two months, Ring Of Honor has lost its’ prime time lot on Destination America, as beginning on July 29th, the show will only air at 11pm, wedged in between two airings of TNA Impact Wrestling.

Evidently, even as programming Destination America is not paying for, the cable network must not feel that they are getting enough advertising revenue for a show in their 8pm prime hour.

Currently, the network does not have a replacement for ROH, as the next few weeks will feature a variety of different shows in the time slot.

According to the latest issue of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, Hunter Johnston told ROH talent at the last set of tapings in Baltimore, Maryland what was about to happen on Destination America, but claimed it was nothing to worry about. Johnston said that as far as he knows, they are only being aired at 11pm for the next few weeks, although it could be permanent.

There were reportedly executives from Destination America at the taping, and they claimed that they were trying out a non-wrestling show for a few weeks, that nothing is changing, and that Destination America still likes them.

  • Ring Of Honor To Add Complete Women’s Division Soon?

Former TNA Knockout Taeler Hendrick took to social media on Wednesday to post what appears to be a tease for an upcoming women’s division in Ring Of Honor.

While ROH roster members Veda Scott, ODB and Maria Kanellis occassionally wrestle for the brand, they currently do not have an extensive, complete women’s division or title at this time.

Below is the post Hendrix made regarding women in ROH:

  • Backstage News On WWE & ROH: Liger At NXT Brooklyn Considered A Major “Double Cross”

WWE’s announcement that Japanese wrestling legend Jushin “Thunder” Liger will be appearing at the NXT Takeover: Brooklyn event on August 22nd has opened up a “political hornet’s nest” according to Dave Meltzer of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter.

Liger is a New Japan Pro Wrestling talent and with NJPW having a long running affiliation with Ring of Honor (which runs head-to-head with NXT in Brooklyn on 8/22), the relationship between WWE and ROH is now considered to be more strained than ever. ROH was not aware of Liger being booked for Takeover until the news broke online and Meltzer notes that even by pro wrestling standards, the move is considered to be a major ‘double-cross.’

ROH has sold approximately 1,100 for their Field of Honor show that night, which they were said to be happy with. They were expecting the show to eventually sell out with around 2,000 fans in attendance, but ticket sales have stalled out since WWE announced Takeover: Brooklyn. Ticket sales for the “Ringside with Jim Ross” show in Manhattan on the same night have also taken a hit due to NXT Takeover.

It remains to be seen whether WWE using Jushin Liger is the start of a working relationship with NJPW, but it’s not good news for ROH, which does not have much recourse against WWE.

WWE’s relationship with ROH taking a step (or two) backwards is surprising. Triple H has publicly stated that a strong Ring of Honor is good for WWE, since ROH is another place for wrestlers to learn their craft and the company has produced countless talents who have gone on to great success in WWE. That said, the strong push to make NXT a bonafide means that ROH is now a direct competitor in a market they are looking to corner.

“On August 12, 2014 my life changed forever in a motorcycle crash that should have killed me. “The Path” is an upcoming documentary that will tell the story of my career, my accident, and my recovery and return to the ring. Hear it first hand from those closest to me and those who were with me day by day on the comeback trail.

“Please donate, share and spread the word to help finish production and distribution of this project. A portion of the proceeds from this film will go to repay medical bills that were not covered by insurance and are still outstanding.”

Elgin also apoke about his own goals, noting he hopes to make it to NXT in the future.

“There [are] still a couple of things I want to accomplish and a few things at Ring of Honor that I still have to accomplish, but, no doubt in my mind, [making it to NXT] is definitely a goal of mine,” Elgin said.

“I always thought I was going to make it, but in other people’s eyes, if I was going to make it,” he continued. “I was going to have to venture the world and follow in the footsteps of guys like Eddie Guerrero and Dean Malenko and Chris Jericho and leave behind a legacy of my work elsewhere to get to WWE, or now NXT, but that’s definitely a route I’m okay with taking and I want to take in the future.”

  • ROH’s Adam Cole Talks About His WWE Tryout, His Training & More

Ring Of Honor star Adam Cole recently spoke with The News Hub’s Marc Madison about a number of topics. Below are some of the highlights from the interview.

On about training under DJ Hyde, John Dahmer, Al Snow and Les Thatcher: “Well with all four of those guys they sound completely different. They helped me on completely different levels. My two main trainers were John Dahmer and DJ Hyde. DJ Hyde mainly taught me how to be tough, I mean the beatings that he used to give the students as far as wrestling initiations go were as tough as they come and I’m thankful for it. When I left his training, I wasn’t really afraid of anything, anymore and then on top of that DJ is very good about taking his students to other wrestling events and getting their names out there whether it be helping set up the ring, or helping set up chairs or anything like that. It was kind of networking from a very early stage in our career. Whereas John Dahmer taught us what the technique behind a lot of the wrestling and then the multiple seminars I did with Al Snow and Les Thatcher at the time. They really taught me the psychology of what we do. Understanding why and when you do certain things so I’m totally thankful for all four and they were all completely different styles of wrestling for me.”

On his initial tryout with the WWE: “That particular tryout I went down to Afa the Wild Samoan’s training school which at the time was located in I believe may be Tampa, Florida but I may be incorrect on that but somewhere in Florida. We actually got to train for a week with Haku and Afa himself and it was awesome. It was such a good experience. I got my ring conditioning up and I learned little tricks of the trade. I learned how to be more intense in the ring because the Samoan’s are so intense. Then going into that tryout, again the harsh reality of that now looking back as to where I was in wrestling at that time, I was in just way over my head.

“I was a 19 year old kid, I was 170 ibs soaking wet. I didn’t have an identity. I didn’t have a look. I didn’t have the proper gear. I was just a young guy trying to be a wrestler. So to be honest, WWE didn’t even give me a second look. I don’t even know if they looked me in the eyes based on my size, based on my experience. I literally looked like a child there. For me it was more motivating as going forward and now I kind of have an idea of what I need to do. A lot of that just comes with just time. When you’re an independent wrestler, committing a lot of time and effort into honing your craft as much as possible in as many different places as possible will catch the WWE’s interest as far as the independent level goes. It was definitely an eye opening experience for me.”
