  • RAW Preview For Tonight & An Update On Blizzard Travel Issues

    – Tonight’s episode of WWE RAW will take place from the Times Union Center in Albany, New York.

No matches have been announced yet, but local advertising for the show has been promoting John Cena and Randy Orton vs. Wade Barrett and The Miz with Michael Cole as the special guest referee as the dark match main event.

Over the weekend, WWE creative discussed Nexus and Wade Barrett returning to television tonight. They were kept off last week’s show to sell the beatings they too at the hands of John Cena at the TLC pay-per-view.

One issue that may come into play tonight is the massive blizzard that hit the North East on Sunday and whether all of the RAW superstars will be able to make it to the arena. Several superstars and Divas were unable to make Sunday’s WWE live event at Madison Square Garden, which resulted in a bunch of last-minute substitutions. WWE’s production trucks are reportedly at the Times Union Center already, but all of the talent getting there is a different story.

  • JR Blog: Royal Rumble, TNA vs. WWE, Booker T, Younger Stars

WWE Hall of Famer Jim Ross has updated his blog, which you can read in its entirety at JRsBarBQ.com. Here are some highlights of what JR said about:

Who Will Win The Royal Rumble: “My early pick to win the 2011 Royal Rumble would have to be John Cena.”

WWE’s Future & Developing New Stars: “The long term future of WWE appears to be bright to me. The company has a strong infrastructure manned by some intelligent, hard working professionals and have continued to take positive steps in putting their footprint around the Globe.  As in any other entertainment or sports entity for that matter, the development of the next wave of superstars who can transcend the biz is imperative. WWE is an attraction oriented business and when new, main event level, attractions evolve and become established then ‘business will pick up’ without question.”

Whether TNA Ever Seriously Compete WWE: Some fans of TNA have asked me when I predict the time line that TNA will over take WWE in the marketplace. Without coming off as a tool but simply being totally realistic, the answer is never. But wait, there’s more….does it matter? I would suggest to you that TNA has all they can say grace over making their brand stronger and are likely, if they are smart, not even trying to compete w/ WWE but only with trying to make themselves better. WWE is the NFL and no other football league will ever touch the NFL. Period. End of story. That certainly doesn’t mean that another league can’t make money and be viable in their world. I’ll never wish TNA or any other company ill will but IMO this is the reality of the matter and the answer to a question we seemingly get all the time. I can assure you that I want our on line biz to grow but I don’t fixate on other similar sites but instead try to think of ways to make our site better.”

Booker T’s Potential As An Announcer: “I do think that Booker T could be an effective broadcaster on  a wrestling TV show if paired with the right partner and given some time to establish his body of work and timing with his partner. I could also see Booker being a great manager, if the manager role, which would be new in today’s world, was brought back. “

  • Ziggler Discusses Amateur Background, Kaitlyn’s Finishing Move

    — The Pittsburgh Tribune-Review conducted an interview with Dolph Ziggler promoting tomorrow night’s SmackDown live event in Pittsburgh, PA. The Intercontinental Champion says his amateur wrestling background comes in handy for him inside the WWE ring.

“In high school and college, I worked hard as hell to be in great shape, to be good at what I did. A lot of that translates over, or at least helps with the mindset — constantly wanting to be better,” he says. “Also, because of my wrestling background, I’ve been able to apply a lot of moves that a lot of people haven’t seen in a long time — stuff I’ve actually used in college to win matches.

“I used to do this ‘crucifix pin,’ where you get a guy’s arm between your legs and another arm between your arms and you roll him on his back. I used to use that as a finishing move in high school and college. Now I actually use it almost every match. It’s really comfortable for me to go to place like that really quickly.”

Ziggler also feels that being able to entertain a crowd is just as, if not more, important than looking the part of a WWE Superstar.

“You have to differentiate yourself from other people,” he says. “There’s a million guys out there who are athletic. There’s a million 6-foot-8 guys who played football. It’s (about) being able to relate to the fans.”

    — Despite winning the third season of NXT, Kaitlyn’s finishing move has yet to be made clear by WWE. According to the newly released Florida Championship Wrestling program, her finishing maneuver is the Flatliner, an attack the late Chris Kanyon popularized. However, her version is called the “Wedgie Flatliner.”

    — The Score in Canada will be airing a marathon of WWE Vintage Collection on New Year’s Day from 5:00 p.m. to 1:00 a.m.

  • WWE Ranks Top 10 Submission Stars, Correction On SD Rating

    — WWE posted a video on YouTube ranking the top 10 greatest WWE submission Superstars of all time. The ranking is as follows:

    10. Tazz

    9. William Regal

    8. Sgt. Slaughter

    7. Daniel Bryan

    6. Dean Malenko

    5. Chris Jericho

    4. Ric Flair

    3. Bob Backlund

    2. Kurt Angle

    1. Bret Hart

Daniel Bryan criticized Flair’s Figure Four finishing maneuver by saying he didn’t win a lot of matches with it and therefore wouldn’t rate at the top.

    — It was reported that last Tuesday’s live SmackDown episode on the USA Network drew a 2.5 cable rating. According to television industry sources, the show actually drew a 2.2 overall cable rating, with 3,812,000 viewers.

    — Wednesday’s Tribute to the Troops broadcast on the USA Network drew a 1.8 cable rating over the course of two hours, with 3,013,000 viewers. The show did hours of 1.8 and 1.7.

  • Goldust Reveals His Severe Drug Problems While With TNA

WWE talent Dustin Rhodes (a/k/a Goldust) speaks frankly and openly about his journey through the professional wrestling industry in his newly released autobiography, Cross Rhodes: Goldust, Out of the Darkness. He gives a no-holds barred account of his severe drug problems, which notably persisted during his two stints with TNA Wrestling. In the book, he admits that his issues had worsened to the point that he was using cocaine prior to matches for the organization in 2005. Regarding this, he wrote:

“Eventually, and thanks to my dad, I started working for Total Nonstop Action for $1,000 a show. He was the boss, right under Dixie Carter. TNA wasn’t doing too well at that point, but I had a job making okay money. I could drive home just about every night. All I was doing was what little I had to do in the ring, then hanging out spending my money on coke, pills, and booze.

“I started making excuses for why I couldn’t hang with Dakota. Subconsciously I probably knew I didn’t want her around me or my girlfriend because the environment was so toxic. Despite the chaos, I showed up every night for work. I have no idea how I was able to stay on point with work at that time. One of my cardinal rules was never to drink before I worked a match. I wouldn’t consider doing coke before a match either. I’d take painkillers, fine. I had been taking painkillers for so long that I had convinced myself I really need them. I was taking medicine because I worked in a tough business. That was the story I had cemented into my mind. But drugs have a way of altering everything, including the stories you tell yourself. Eventually, I started doing a little coke before matches while retaining my vow to never drink alcohol before I go into the ring, as if that was something to be proud of.”

Rhodes parted ways with TNA Wrestling after being arrested on April 25, 2005 and charged with misdemeanor battery following a domestic incident with his girlfriend at the Hard Rock Hotel in Orlando, Florida. He would return to the organization two years later as the split personality character Black Reign. He said that time was the hardest period of his life as his painkiller usage increased.

“Every morning, as soon as I pulled myself out of bed, I’d take three Vicodins or Lortabs just to get moving. I was sore and pretty banged up physically, but over time pain pills exaggerated rather than eliminated whatever pain I was feeling. It was a slow process for me to get into the day. I’d get that first rush from pills and then I’d get moving. I might do something around the house, or jump into my truck and drive to the river to work on this book.”

He continues disclosing his severe self-medication issues, which culminated with the following in early 2008:

“I was probably taking close to forty pills a day at the end. I was so desperate that I actually bought pain pills from drug dealers because I would run out long before I could find another doctor to write a prescription. If I dropped a pill and it fell into the carpet, I would spend hours down on my hands and knees trying to find it. At the same time I was drinking so much that I’d wake up dizzy and unable to walk.

“Finally, after a three-day binge, I’d had enough. It was raining, I pulled myself up and walked right out the door. The rain was pouring down and I stumbled up a hill near this house where I knew I could get cell-phone reception. Somehow, I managed to call my dad. It was four thirty in the morning. I was falling down the hill in the mud. Ta-rel (his girlfriend) was trying to hold me up. I was scared half to death. I managed to get into the house, soaking wet.

    “I had found the bottom.”

Rhodes, still affiliated with TNA Wrestling, then reveals calling Ann Russo-Gordon, the liaison between World Wrestling Entertainment and talent who take up the company’s offer for rehab. He remained locked away in a rehabilitation center for thirty days to face his demons and was successful. He credits his family and WWE, which he also considers family, for helping him turn his life around. He says he has remained sober since May 20, 2008.

  • Bryan, Styles & Black Comment On Kaval’s Release From WWE

More people affiliated with WWE tweeted on Kaval’s release yesterday:

Joey Styles: “If TNA doesn’t immediately sign Kaval (who won NXT based on wwe.com fans and wrestlers votes), I’ve no idea what they look for in wrestlers.”

Seth Rollins (a/k/a Tyler Black): “Jaw is on the floor… @oneworldwarrior gone from WWE?! I can’t believe it.”

Daniel Bryan: “Not sure what happened, but I’d always hoped I could face @OneWorldWarrior on WWE TV. He’s one of the most talented men I’ve ever wrestled.”

  • Kaval Reportedly Miserable In WWE & Asked For His Release

According to sources close to former WWE superstar Kaval, he was the one who asked to be released. He was not fired, as some readers originally assumed.

From what we’ve heard, Kaval was said to be “miserable” working the WWE schedule and did not see his career going anywhere. Company officials tried to talk him into staying, but were anable to do so.

Joey Styles wrote on Twitter, “If TNA doesn’t immediately sign Kaval (who won NXT based on wwe.com fans and wrestlers votes), I’ve no idea what they look for in wrestlers.” As was the case with the recent releases of Matt Hardy and MVP, top WWE officials are not worried about Kaval going to TNA – since stars like Hulk Hogan, Ric Flair, Rob Van Dam, Jeff Hardy and Mr. Anderson have done very little to help TNA’s ratings.

Kaval’s first post-WWE match has already been announced. He will be back wrestling as “Low Ki” when he wrestles former TNA X-Division champion The Amazing Red on January 28th for Impact Championship Wrestling in Queens, New York.

  • JR Blog: Cena-Punk, Nexus, Vickie Fat Jokes, Savage, Taz & More

WWE Hall of Famer Jim Ross is back with another blog update, which you can read in its entirety at JRsBarBQ.com. Here are some highlights of what JR said about:

What’ Next For The Nexus: “What’s next for Nexus? Big question here on this site from a multitude of folks. It seems as if John Cena is moving on to CM Punk, which I personally think will be stout, but I can’t see Nexus evaporating. I predict that Nexus will return in some shape, form or fashion in the near future and how they address their internal issues could potentially be interesting TV.”

Vickie Guerrero Fat Jokes: “The volume of emails and Tweets that we have received regarding the ‘fat jokes’ directed toward Vickie Guerrero this week on WWE TV has been staggering. Not all were negative as many fans enjoyed the segments in question and called them ‘laugh out loud funny.’ Other, however, have expressed displeasure and some have provided us with some extreme analogies. One emailer scolded me as if he knew me because I said that the segment did not offend me and that it reminded me of a ‘TV Roast’ and it was the ‘good guys’ having fun with the villain (Vickie G.) The live audience loved the segment or so it seemed to me by what I was hearing and seeing. By endorsing the comedy bit, I’ve been accused of being the kind of person who causes incidents such as Columbine. Columbine? Really? Because I actually found the topic in question to be funny, I’ve also been accused of not having any ‘guts.’ I seriously doubt that individual would say to my face and often wonder if some seemingly obsessed fans are just as hellbent on the really important things in their lives as they are about a pro wrestling TV show. Hey, I get it if every one doesn’t like the same things that I do and I appreciate reading various points of view. However, to compare what happens on a pro wrestling show to a tragedy such as Columbine is ridiculous.”

Announcing With Randy Savage: “An emailer asked me how I liked broadcasting with Randy Savage. Savage was a little challenging not because he lacked skill or knowledge but because he was extremely unpredictable about what he was going to say and when he was going to say it. Macho Man certainly kept one on their toes.”

Smackdown’s Rating: “Great TV rating on Tuesday night for Smackdown. Biggest rating in years as best I know. That’s the difference in being on a network such as USA as opposed to their sister network, the fledgling Syfy Network. USA is a monster among cable networks and being on a lesser entity, as other wrestling shows are as well, is simply a daunting task.”

Taz’s New “Finishing School”: “Really happy to hear of the initial success that Taz’ dojo is having. Taz will coach up wrestlers with experience and remember this is not a dojo for beginners. I highly recommend that young wrestlers check Taz’ new biz out. It’s based in Long Island, New York as many of you already know. I really enjoyed working at the announce table with Taz in WWE.”

  • Update On HHH’s In-Ring Future, Haas Calls WWE ‘Classless’

    — Many within WWE feel that Triple H won’t go back on a full-time wrestling schedule upon his return to the ring as he’s transitioning into a corporate position with the organization. He’s had more authority at events in recent weeks. (source: Wrestling Observer Newsletter)

    — Charlie Haas took to Twitter to comment on Kaval’s release from WWE today, calling the organization ‘classless’.

He wrote: “Sorry to hear the news of Kaval being released. Especially before Christmas. What a gift. Shows how classless WWE is. Low Ki ur better off … Anyways. Kaval is one of the best talents in the world. No doubt he will prevail else where. Much respect and love for him.”

Below are various Twitter reactions to Kaval’s release from World Wrestling Entertainment today:

Jim Ross: “Kaval’s release from WWE surprised me. Don’t know the circumstances. Kaval won’t have any issues finding work. I wish him my best.”

Jeremy Borash: “Very grateful to be working for a company that gives out bonus checks at Christmas instead of walking papers.”

Shelton Benjamin: “I guess my question is would you rather see him as a jobber for Wwe or the Indy phenom that he had been.”

  • Beth Phoenix Interested In Having Former WWE Diva Return

Beth Phoenix is interviewed in the latest issue of WWE Magazine and she discussed her difficult ACL injury earlier this year, the changing face of the WWE Divas, which former Diva she’d like to see return, and much more.

Regarding her ACL injury in May, she commented: “The weird thing was, when I got hurt, I felt fine. I was walking around and running, and I shrugged it off thinking it was just a tweak. But then my doctor told me I tore my ACL and I’d be out for six months. All I could think was, “I just won the title! Taking six months off isn’t even a possibility right now!” I had the option to wrap my knee and risk tearing it completely or have surgery. But I was a defending champion and wasn’t backing down or handing over my title without a fight.

“The Glamazon” was asked if she thinks she was instrumental in initiating the change to the Divas division becoming more athletic than ever.

“I would love to take credit for something as wonderful as that, but I think it’s a credit to the company for valuing women who are not only beautiful, but also athletic and smart,” she responded. “Take Eve, for example. She has a background in Judo. Then there’s Michelle, who has a college degree and a great head on her shoulders. Young girls can really look up to and emulate the Divas. I think I can take some of the credit, though, for introducing more voluptuous girls to WWE. I was one of the first Divas to prove that you didn’t have to be model-thin to be successful, that you could have muscles and still be beautiful.

Finally, she noted that she would like to see former WWE Women’s Champion Lita make a comeback in 2011.

“I’d love to have a match with her,” she said. “I never had the chance.”

NorthJersey.com conducted an interview with Kane promoting next Thursday’s SmackDown live event at the Izod Center in East Rutherford, New Jersey. He discussed his mask, how long it took him to be comfortable to cut promos, his political blog, and more.

They hit it right on the head because [they said] it added a definite air of mystery, which is very true. Right now, we have Rey Mysterio with a mask. And up until Rey won the world championship, I think I was the only masked wrestler to ever win the world championship. … I definitely think it’s a trade-off. Certainly there were things about wearing the mask that were unique.”

    — In an update on former WWE star Rico, he is currently working as an Airport Control Officer for the Nevada Taxi Cab Authority in Las Vegas. He retired from the wrestling industry in July 2005.

    — Jamie Noble, who now works with WWE in a backstage capacity, turns 34 years old today. Also celebrating a birthday is The Great Muta, who turns 48.
