MLW Announces A Return To Tampa After 20 Years

MLW is returning to Florida, a state where it all began for the promotion over two decades ago.

Major League Wrestling will be ringing in spring with one of their primary PLEs, War Chamber and the event will take place at Coliseum in St. Petersburg, FL.

MLW made the announcement on Tuesday, giving fans plenty of time to purchase tickets in advance as the sale begins Friday, January 5.

The Coliseum certainly has its ties to the legacy of MLW as the venue last hosted the promotion all the way back in August 2003.

On the MLW website, the company gave further information on the history behind the Coliseum, noting that it’s been around since 1924.

Since the pandemic, MLW has greatly made Philadelpha its unofficial residence as they’ve hosted several of their live events at the 2300 Arena, originally the ECW Arena, on the corner of Swanson & Ritner.

However, the company has begun to venture out once more, most notably hitting an old haunt, The Melrose Ballroom in Queens, NY. MLW CEO Court Bauer and his crew also have added Chicago back on its list, making their return to Cicero Stadium in the Windy City.

2024 should be an intriguing year for Major League Wrestling as it just lost one of its primary stars in Alex Hammerstone to free agency. In the same turn, there have been some high-profile returns for the company. Matt Riddle, Tom Lawlor, Richard Holliday, Salina de la Renta and the promotion’s first-ever World Champion, Satoshi Kojima have all resurfaced as of recent.

MLW Returning To Chicago For The First Time Since 2019

MLW fans in Chicago would be very happy to know that the promotion recently announced a new event for 2024.

Major League Wrestling announced that they are making a massive return to Chicago in 2024 with their AZTECA LUCHA event on Saturday, May 11. Tickets go on sale on Friday, December 15 at 10 a.m. It will be available online at http://www.luchatickets.com and Eventbrite.com. It has also come to light that the event will stream live on FITE+.

The announcement also noted that as a thank you to Chicago fans, this event will be a special fan appreciation event with tickets starting at $10. Tickets will also be available day of show at the box office unless the event gets sold out in advance.

Matches and fighters will be announced MLW’s official website.  A Special Meet & Greet has been also scheduled for the event..

Schedule for the MLW event in Chicago

5:30 p.m.: Early entry for front row ticket holders

7:00 p.m : Showtime

PARKING
There are parking lots across the street as well as street parking readily available.

Last year in January, MLW initiated a lawsuit against WWE, and alleged anticompetitive practices and interference in MLW’s business operations.

It came to light that the lawsuit claimed that WWE, under Vince McMahon’s leadership, used its influence to refrain MLW from securing a television deal with a major network.

This hindered their growth and violated antitrust laws. Recently, it has been revealed that MLW and WWE have reached a settlement. This marks the end of their legal dispute. You can read about the matter in details below:

Top MLW Star Alex Hammerstone Announces Free Agency In 2024

Alex Hammerstone will be a free agent to start the new year.

Similar tp his longtime “Dynasty bro” MJF, Hammerstone announced that his current contract will officially expire on January 1, 2024. The former MLW World Heavyweight Champion made the announcement via social media, noting that MLW One Shot was his last event under his current contract. Hammerstone also included ways to contact him for business opportunities.

Just last month, Hammerstone made his return to MLW after dropping the World Title to current champion Alex Kane earlier this year, ending his reign of over 600 days.

Before his comeback, Hammerstone teased that he was ready to move on from MLW, a promotion he’s been with since 2018. However, a swerve was made last month as he revealed himself to be apart of Mister Saint Laurent’s “World Titan Federation,” a faction clearly embracing the 1980s “sports entertainment” style of WWF.

Last night during One-Shot, Hammerstone heeled it up in a bodybuilding competition, before brawling with longtime rival, Jacob Fatu. In tapings for MLW Fusion on Thursday, Hammerstone fought Fatu in what could be their third and final battle under the MLW banner.

The History Behind Alex Hammerstone

When first starting with MLW, Hammerstone started off as an arrogant heel before aligning himself with MJF and Richard Holliday, forming one of the promotion’s greatest factions, The Dynasty. The group dispersed when MJF moved full-time to AEW. During that run, Hammerstone became the inaugural National Openweight Champion, a title he never lost and eventually defeated Jacob Fatu to become the World Champion.

Hammerstone clearly became the face of MLW and defended his gold against countless competitors, including fellow Dynasty member Richard Holliday, who ironically enough, made his return to the company at One Shot Thursday evening.

As a free agent, Hammerstone will be a hot commoditiy in wrestling. With MJF in AEW, speculation could occur that he could sign there, but his physical presence, ring ability and charisma would make him an excellent fit in WWE. Along with Kenny Omega, Hammerstone is one of the few talents remaining to be protective of his finishing move, The Nightmare Pendulum. Only Jacob Fatu has ever kicked out of the manuever.

Latest on MLW’s Relationship With Reelz

We’ve got an update on Major League Wrestling’s future with the REELZ cable network.

Earlier this week, a report from Variety suggested that MLW Underground will end its tenure on REELZ after the ten-week period. The most recent episode, which aired on February 28, was the fourth episode of Underground thus far.

The distribution deal provides the company the exposure it’s received since MLW relaunched back in 2017. New episodes of MLW Underground air on REELZ Tuesday nights at 10 p.m. EST. Viewership has been quite strong, averaging 83,000 viewers per episode.

REELZ has now released a statement on the future of its relationship with MLW.

REELZ issues statement on MLW

On Thursday, REELZ issued an official statement to PWInsider regarding the future of the New York-based company on their channel. It reads:

“No decisions have been made by MLW or REELZ and we are both committed to a good outcome for MLW, its fans and REELZ.”

The surprising news that MLW’s relationship with Reelz may be limited to only 10 weeks came when Variety reported Peacock is adding the live REELZ feed to their streaming service. The time slot that Underground currently runs will be ‘blacked out’ due to WWE having an exclusive deal with the streaming platform.

MLW has pending litigation against WWE with claims that WWE stopped them from reaching a deal with Tubi and interfered with their relationship with Vice TV. On February 13, the judge on the MLW v. WWE antitrust lawsuit case dismissed MLW’s complaint against WWE. This allowed them to amend their complaint. The ruling came about as the judge believed the company lacked sufficient facts to prove its case.

MLW’s Deal With Reelz May Be Up After Just 10 Weeks

Major League Wrestling’s partnership with REELZ appears to be a short-term deal, limited to just 10 weeks.

The distribution deal provides the company the most exposure its received since MLW relaunched back in 2017. New episodes of MLW Underground air on REELZ Tuesday nights at 10 p.m. EST. Viewership has been healthy so far, averaging 83,000 viewers per episode.

A new report from Variety suggests that MLW Underground is set to end its tenure on REELZ after the ten-week period. The most recent episode, which aired on February 28, was the fourth episode of Underground thus far.

Earlier this week, news broke that Peacock was adding the live REELZ feed to their streaming service. The time slot that MLW Underground currently runs will be ‘blacked out’ due to WWE having an exclusive deal with the streaming platform.

Court Bauer’s fight league has carved out a niche for itself in an industry dominated by the likes of WWE and All Elite Wrestling (AEW).

The ruling came about as the judge believed MLW lacked sufficient facts to prove its case.

It is uncertain whether MLW Underground will air on a different network following the end of the ten-week run.

Reelz Channel To Stream On Peacock, Except for MLW Programming

The Reelz Channel will have a great opportunity to reach a bigger audience on Peacock. However, Major League Wrestling will lose out.

MLW has tried to find a bigger audience to compete with wrestling promotions like WWE and All Elite Wrestling. MLW alleged and sued WWE last year with claims that WWE stopped them from reaching a deal with Tubi and interfered with their relationship with Vice TV. On Feb. 13, the judge on the MLW v. WWE antitrust lawsuit case dismissed MLW’s complaint against WWE, which allowed them to amend their complaint. The ruling was because the judge believed MLW lacked sufficient facts to prove their case.

During their lawsuit with WWE, MLW reached a deal with Reelz. On Tuesday, MLW does their weekly episode of MLW Underground at 10 PM ET/7 PM PT on the Reelz Channel. The deal would benefit MLW, as they could have TV exposure and grow their fanbase. On Feb. 28, Reelz made a deal with Peacock, who has a streaming deal with WWE. This has resulted in MLW losing out on another opportunity.

Reelz Deal with Peacock, Leaves MLW Out

NBC’s Universal streaming service Peacock signed an exclusive streaming rights deal with WWE on Jan. 25, 2021. The agreement has worked out successfully for NBCU as they get monthly live events from WWE and the library, which has helped gain subscribers. However, it also means that a competitive wrestling company like MLW couldn’t also air on Peacock.

The Hollywood Reporter’s Alex Werpin shared details about Reelz’s deal with Peacock and why MLW will not be involved.

“…While it will include the channel’s live linear feed, it will not stream Tuesdays in the 10 p.m. hour, as Reelz airs Major League Wrestling in that hour. Peacock has a streaming deal with the WWE, which has exclusivity in the category on Peacock,” wrote Werpin.

The Reelz Channel will still be available for different cable providers like Direct TV and Verizon Fios, so MLW will still have a chance to gain an audience. However, airing on Peacock would’ve benefitted them greatly.

Cesar Duran Teases Big Plans for Major League Wrestling

When Cesar Duran arrived in Major League Wrestling (MLW) in the summer of 2021, it didn’t take long for his presence to be felt. Fans knew he would take the unique opportunity to use his prior business experience in Boyle Heights and the Lucha Underground Temple for a new company.

The former Dario Cueto signed on in the role of MLW matchmaker, as well as owner and proprietor of Azteca Underground. A brand of Azteca Lucha that he plans to grow stronger. Duran teased in a recent interview that the ruthless mogul looks to bring in more familiar faces.

“They are going to make this show something that will take the audience from other promotions very fast. You wait and see,” he said. “That’s what I’m looking forward to. We are having a big component of lucha libre to MLW. The audience will love it. I’m trying to put more lucha libre style into the mix.

It’s hard to believe next year will mark 10 years since Lucha Underground arrived on the scene. Duran came in from an acting background and, admittedly, zero pro wrestling experience and minimal product knowledge.

“Immediately, it caught my attention,” he said, “It’s like a bunch of people putting their lives at risk for our enjoyment. Beat that. I started to get a lot of respect for the wrestlers because people don’t know what they have to go through. Then unfortunately we had an incident where Hijo del Perro Aguayo died at the tapings. For me, that was life-transforming. From then on, it became like a religion.”

Getting that behind-the-scenes perspective really opened Duran’s eyes to this new world. His openness to listen and learn attributed to his success. He built an organic connection to the audience as a popular, yet extremely villainous figure.  Elements of Cueto could certainly be seen in Duran, but for the performer, they are also different in ways.

“All I learned about wresting I did through Dario Cueto and Lucha Underground,” he said. “… This character is not Dario Cueto. Cesar Duran has his own visions. I think Dario Cueto was more devilish. I was literally the devil reincarnated.”

Duran may be somewhat more grounded, at least from what we’ve seen now. Yet he is not above backdoor dealings onscreen. For the star, there are other similarities between one show’s atmosphere and the other. He gets the same sense that everyone working to produce the events and programming is part of a big family. One that continues to get bigger with the addition of more talent including former coworkers like the returning John Hennigan. The popular wrestler joins his wife and former LU alum Taya Valkyrie.

“I feel like I grew up with them,” Duran added. “…Everyone on Lucha Underground wants to come with us, even those from WWE. When they knew I joined MLW they called. I think you know who I’m talking about.”

MLW continues to grow as a new era recently began with MLW Underground joining the Reelz. There is excitement felt backstage. “You get the feeling everyone wants to make this a big thing,” Duran added. There is a sense on his end that this is only the beginning for the company, saying “I think it’s going to go to big places.”

Duran is happy to be a part of the team, bringing his diverse acting resume to the table. His experience no doubt helps when working with new and emerging talent.

“Before shooting a scene I always share a background story we may have,” he said. “Moments or something that may have happened before, even when it’s not in the script. I like to share that with them because then they get in the mood without knowing it. Then when the camera is rolling, they are present…”

Duran believes MLW stars including champ Alexander Hammerstone could do well in Hollywood because of their expansive abilities to entertain and tell stories. He himself works on projects along with other MLW dealings. In fact, Duran took time from shooting Mayans M.C. for this very interview. He’ll also play a boarding school principal for an upcoming summer project.

“Whoever is a fan of wrestling when I get to a set they are, ‘Oh my god.’ They want t a picture or something. There are big stars on sets…the ones that do follow are very happy they see me on set. And I’m very happy to see them around.”

MLW Underground airs at 10 p.m. ET Tuesdays on Reelz. MLW Fusion airs at 8 p.m. ET Thursdays on Pro Wrestling TV

Judge dismisses MLW’s complaint against WWE; MLW can amend

In January 2022, MLW filed a lawsuit against WWE for violating the Sherman Antitrust Act. The promotion claims that WWE stopped VICE from working them in 2021. They also allege that Tubi ended their deal with MLW after a call from a WWE executive. Today a judge dismissed MLW’s complaint against WWE, but is allowing them to amend their complaint.

“WWE has been wrongfully depriving its competitors of critical opportunities for many years, but its latest conduct has been even more unconscionable,” said MLW CEO Court Bauer. “I think we speak for the rest of the professional wrestling world when we say that this anti-competitive behavior has to stop.”

Judge Will Allow MLW to Amend Complaint

MLW New Logo

MLW Underground debuted on REELZ last Tuesday night. They also have a deal with Pro Wrestling TV.

Brandon Thurston of Wrestlenomics tweeted that “the judge in MLW v. WWE antitrust lawsuit dismissed MLW’s initial complaint today, allowing MLW 21 days to submit an amended complaint. WWE has been seeking to avoid the case going to discovery.”

He also tweeted “The Court finds that MLW has not included sufficient facts to plausibly allege a relevant antitrust product market.” The judge wants to hear an argument for why other kinds of content aren’t acceptable substitutes for wrestling content, citing ongoing UFC lawsuit, Le v. Zuffa.”

Thurston further pointed out that “the judge notes MLW’s claims that WWE has monopoly power and has caused MLW antitrust injury, are unlikely to survive unless improved in the amended complaint.”

The judge’s order can be read in full here.

Court Bauer, MLW’s founder, has provided a statement to Fightful:

“Our legal team is already at work on amending the complaint. We have every intention to continue pursuing our case against WWE.”

Dear MLW Fan,

It’s been more than five years since we embarked on bringing back Major League Wrestling. During that time, we’ve introduced a new generation of wrestlers while showcasing gifted talent who had been underappreciated and underutilized elsewhere.

Along the way, you helped build the foundation of MLW by showing up and supporting us. Whether it’s watching us every week, coming to our shows, spreading the word on social media, buying your favorite MLW shirt or just telling a friend about us. You are the heart of MLW.

We’ve endured a lot together. From a pandemic to billionaires attempting to cripple the hard work so many have put into your league.

For five years MLW has been the best kept secret. Our secret. All we needed was the platform.

Now we have the platform with REELZ. Now we have an opportunity to show the world what Major League Wrestling, its roster and its fans are all about.

Tonight begins a new chapter for us.

Tonight, and every Tuesday at 10pm MLW Underground will be on one of the top 25 networks in cable TV in REELZ.

Myron Reed Announces He’s a Free Agent After 4 Years With MLW

Former MLW World Middleweight Champion Myron Reed has hit the free market after being released by the company earlier this month. The 25-year-old was released from his contract on January 14, according to Fightful Select. The two sides parted ways amicably.

Reed began his wrestling career in 2016 initially doing backyard wrestling and putting it on YouTube. He then got a chance at Kentucky-based World Wrestling Alliance, where he went by the name Brother Reed.

On Tuesday afternoon, Reed confirmed that he’s a free agent. “The Young Goat” is ready for whatever comes next and says, “The stars and the sky is the direction!”

The high-flying star joined MLW back in 2018 and he had been part of the company ever since. He is one of the founding members of the Injustice group alongside Rich Swann.

Reed won the MLW World Middleweight Championship back in November 2019. He defeated Teddy Hart for the title and went on to have an impressive 424 days long reign with the belt before dropping it to Lio Rush.

Apart from MLW, Myron Reed has wrestled for promotions such as AAW and Glory Pro Wrestling. He was ranked at #84 in PWI’s Top 500 Wrestler list in 2021.

There is no word on what the former champion is planning for his future. At his age, he would be a great signing for all potential bidders including AEW and WWE.

WWE Requests Protective Order Against MLW in Lawsuit

WWE hopes to secure a protective order for its anti-trust lawsuit with Major League Wrestling.

On Jan. 11, 2022, MLW filed a lawsuit against the WWE. The lawsuit alleges that WWE tried to halt MLW from finalizing media deals with Tubi and Vice TV. MLW also claims that WWE tried to poach talent away from the company.

When the anti-lawsuit was filed, MLW CEO Court Baurer said, “WWE has been wrongfully depriving its competitors of critical opportunities for many years, but its latest conduct has been even more unconscionable.” He continued, “I think we speak for the rest of the professional wrestling world when we say that this anti-competitive behavior has to stop.”

WWE has attempted to dismiss the lawsuit but hasn’t succeeded. On Dec. 14, 2022, it was reported that the case is expected to move forward. The week prior, our’s Andrew Ravens reported that “MLW laid out the materials they were seeking in discovery.”

PWInsider’s Mike Johnson reports that WWE has requested a protective order to prevent the company from providing discovery material.

“World Wrestling Entertainment filed a motion with the United States District Court, Northern District of California, San Jose Division on January 5th, seeking a protective order from the court that would suspend WWE’s obligation to search for and produce materials requested by MLW in regard to the lawsuit Major League Wrestling brought against them last year,” said the report.

WWE Reason for Requesting a Protective Order

WWE believes the company should wait to provide material for discovery as it’s still being determined if the court will have jurisdiction over the case. Johnson also reports that “…WWE’s stance is that if the Court decides they are not dismissing MLW’s antitrust allegations against the company, the remaining allegations would likely land in State Court, which could require WWE to begin the discovery process anew, at an additional cost to the company.”

The report also shared that MLW wants documents from WWE regarding”…all lawsuits, claims, or complaints, threatened or actual,” made by WWE’s employees (not just professional wrestlers) in connection with WWE employment or contractor agreements.”

It’s unclear if WWE’s request to get a protective order will be granted. WWE could also try to settle the matter out of court, especially with hopes of potentially selling the company.

MLW Announces Hammerstone vs. Fatu Rematch for Superfight

MLW has announced its main event for the SuperFight 2023 show as Alex Hammerstone will defend his MLW World Heavyweight Title against Jacob Fatu.

This event will take place on Saturday, February 4, at the 2300 Arena in Philadelphia.

Their first match happened when Hammerstone defeated Fatu to win the MLW World Heavyweight Title at MLW Fightland 2021 after The announcement of the match was touted as the biggest rivalry in Major League Wrestling.

Backstory

Fatu earned his title shot by winning Battle Riot IV last year in New York City, but up to this point had not revealed the date and location for it. Now, they will square off in the ring to see who will walk out as champion.

Since winning the MLW World Heavyweight Title, Hammerstone has defended the title against various challengers ranging from Davey Richards to Richard Holliday as well as other top stars.

During this time, Fatu has continued to be pushed as a dominant star to crush CONTRA after having a falling out with the group and forming the Samoan SWAT Team.

No other matches have been announced thus far for the upcoming event that will serve as a taping for its weekly Fusion TV series. MLW will announce additional bouts as the event gets closer.

MLW’s Lawsuit Against WWE Expected To Move Forward

MLW is moving forward with its lawsuit against WWE after initially filing it in January.

Judge Edward J. Davila scheduled a conference yesterday to discuss a trial date for the case between the two sides, according to Pwinsider.com. The conference is scheduled for September 7, 2023, in San Jose, California.

Davila also ruled that all amended pleadings in the lawsuit are due on February 13, 2023. MLW laid out the materials they were seeking in discovery on December 7th.

The court documents note that the Plaintiff anticipates taking discovery concerning its claims, including:

“(1) the relevant antitrust market; (2) documents related to VICE, Tubi and FITE; (3) WWE’s employment agreements, event venue agreements and distribution agreements; (4) WWE’s poaching of talent from MLW, AEW and other competitors; (5) WWE’s interference with booking arenas; (6) the impact of WWE’s conduct on entry into the market for broadcasting of professional wrestling programming and related consumer harm; (7) documents related to Jerry S. McDevitt’s appearance in the Dark Side of the Ring program; and (8) damages.”

Defendant anticipates taking discovery with respect to its defenses in the case, including “Plaintiff’s attempts to obtain broadcasting rights from the hundreds if not thousands of other potential buyers, Plaintiff’s efforts to start its own streaming service (which it acknowledges that WWE and Impact have started), and Plaintiff’s recent successes in obtaining broadcast agreement(s), such as its agreement with Pro Wrestling TV, which demonstrate the frivolous nature of its antitrust claims. The Parties are not proposing to conduct discovery in phases or to limit discovery to particular issues.”

Sources tell SEScoops WWE’s motion will be formally dismissed shortly. The judge found there is merit and a case for the court to examine.

In January, MLW filed a lawsuit against WWE, alleging that WWE attempted to undermine their competition by preventing Major League Wrestling from finalizing multiple media distribution deals. It also accused WWE of attempting to sign MLW talent while they were still under contract with the wrestling company.

Real1 vs. Microman Signed for MLW Blood & Thunder (1/7)

Former WWE Superstar Real1 (Enzo Amore) is facing down the smallest challenge of his career.

Major League Wrestling has announced Real1 will battle Microman the upcoming MLW Blood & Thunder event, scheduled for January 7 from Philadelphia’s 2300 arena.

The match is being billed as, the “Certified G” vs. “The World’s Greatest Wonder.”

According to MLW, Microman lobbied league officials to book the match after Real1 literally punted him out of the ring at Battle RIOT IV.

Real1 has reportedly has taken exception to Microman being heralded as “pound-for-pound the world’s greatest fighter.”

MLW Boss Court Bauer has been quoted saying, “MLW’s new season promised new matches and new rules and it doesn’t get any weirder than this one.”

Johnny Fusion Returning to MLW at Blood & Thunder

Former WWE Superstar John Morrison returns to Major League Wrestling at MLW Blood & Thunder. The event takes place Saturday, January 7 from Philadelphia’s 2300 Arena.

Keeping with his habit of altering his name based on the promotion he’s working for, he’ll be competing as Johnny Fusion.

A press release sent in by MLW reads:

“No stranger to MLW, Johnny Fusion, tore it up against the likes of Shane Strickland, Darby Allin and others in MLW during his last stint. With a reloaded MLW roster featuring the likes of Davey Richards, Alex Hammerstone, Jacob Fatu and many others, expect some dream matches on the horizon.

Perhaps a reunion could be in the mix for Johnny Fusion, who has history with the ruthless Cesar Duran.

Plus, the reigning Women’s World Featherweight Champion Taya Valkyrie happens to be Johnny Fusion’s wife. Could a new power couple be in play in 2023 in MLW?”

MLW Star Richard Holliday Vows to Beat Cancer

Richard Holliday has provided an update on his status as he is battling cancer.

While speaking to Justin Barrasso of Sports Illustrated, the MLW star revealed that he’s battling Hodgkin’s lymphoma and is halfway through chemotherapy.

“It’s been a whirlwind,” said Holliday. “You never expect this will happen to you. I took such pride in my health, so to get news like this was quite shocking.”

In June, he started experiencing a vicious bout of night sweats. His last match happened on June 23 when he challenged Alex Hammerstone for the MLW World Heavyweight Title in Falls Count Anywhere match at the MLW Fusion tapings.

The Details

Holliday recalled the match and noted he was taking Dayquil to try to get through every day. He said that he felt off, and when he got home, he was freezing and pale white when he left after a month.

In July, he experienced severe dizzy spells and went to the emergency room, where his iron and hemoglobin were dangerously low to the point doctors thought he was anemic. He began taking iron pills to counter that, but his levels continued to check.

“They checked if I had internal bleeding, which I didn’t, and then they ran a litany of tests and a scan of my body for a possible case of lymphoma in September. Those tests confirmed it was Hodgkin’s lymphoma. It was earth-shattering, devastating. But I knew right then I needed to change my mindset. The mind powers the body, so I needed to stay positive. I was reassured by my doctor that I could beat this, and I believe I am going to beat this. My plan is not to lose to lymphoma; my plan is to inspire people. I’m going to come out of this stronger, and I’m going to let people know they can beat it, too.”

Holliday stated that he doesn’t know when he will return to the ring but is adamant that he will beat cancer as he can’t stop thinking about making a return to in-ring action.
