More Wrestling Promotions Likely To Announce National TV Deals Soon

There is at least a 2-hour wrestling program on national television every night of the week at the moment. RAW on Monday, NXT on Tuesday, AEW on Wednesday, Impact on Thursday, and Smackdown on Friday. According to comments made on Wrestling Observer Radio, at least one more promotion is about to announce a national television deal shortly.

“There’s going to be at least one more pro-wrestling promotion’s going to have a national deal, any minute now too,” said Dave Meltzer. “So there are two deals that – I don’t know if they are signed signed, but there are two deals that are very, very close that should be announced any minute now, I guess, any minute, any week. Closer to a minute than a week.”

Nothing was said about which promotions he was referring to. Some speculation can be made, however. MLW’s Court Bauer has been teasing that his promotion has signed a new deal.

https://twitter.com/courtbauer/status/1380251831331340291?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E1380251831331340291%7Ctwgr%5E%7Ctwcon%5Es1_&ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.sportskeeda.com%2Fpro-wrestling%2Fnews-mlw-ceo-court-bauer-makes-huge-announcement

There have also been several rumors in recent months regarding a national television deal for New Japan Pro Wrestling as well. AXS TV as well as other channels were said to be in the mix.

“There are significant talks involving New Japan returning to AXS television. AXS was wanting the programming back, and it would likely involve more dealings with New Japan and Impact, as the Juice Robinson & David Finlay debut as regulars show,” wrote Dave Meltzer in late February.

“Regarding the talks with AXS, the company is in talks right now with a number of U.S. stations, AXS being one of them,” wrote Dave Meltzer the following week.

MLW Talking With Notable Company About Potential TV Deal

Last month MLW President Court Bauer indicated that the promotion has signed a new broadcast deal, but no news following that had come out until now. Pwinsider.com reported the promotion is talking with a potential partner in Discovery.

Of course, Discovery had a short relationship with Impact Wrestling a few years ago as the promotion aired on Destination America, which is under the Discovery banner.

Discovery’s launch of their new streaming service Discovery+ has seen the company be aggressive towards acquiring new content. Fans can watch Dark Side of the Ring on the streaming service, which airs on VICE TV.

It will be interesting to see whether MLW can make such a deal, which opens up some possibilities such as airing on Discovery or Investigation Discovery as they are in the area of 96 million homes.

Another possibility is DSports, which could help them internationally the platform has a strong mark share in a number of countries as a sports network. It should be noted that Discovery has been interested in the past with having wrestling on their networks as they had talks with WWE last year regarding the WWE Network.

Lucha Underground Trademarks Filed By Lucha Libre FMV

Lucha Libre FMV LLC filed to trademark the term “Lucha Underground” on March 31st, 2021. The company was formerly a joint venture between MGM Television, AAA Lucha Libre, and FactoryMade Ventures.

AAA and Lucha Libre FMV have been involved in a legal battle over revenue earned by AAA in the United States as of late. The filing of Lucha Underground trademarks may be related to this. The legal battle has also resulted in the removal of AAA shows from YouTube in the United States.

Lucha Libre FMV is suing Promociones Antonio Pena for breaching an agreement made in 2014 which gives Lucha Libre FMV the right to monetize AAA content in the United States.

The original trademark filings for the term were made in 2014. The recent filing lists “A downloadable television series featuring wrestling” as the purposes for the trademark.

Is Lucha Underground Returning?

PW Insider is reporting that they spoke with people at MGM who denied the show is returning. In MLW, however, the Mil Muertes character is part of a faction known as Azteca Underground. The group is being teased as the remnants of Lucha Underground.

MLW’s Azteca Underground faction was addressed recently in the Wrestling Observer Newsletter.

“The Lucha Underground reboot we wrote about a few weeks ago is actually a project of Konnan and Court Bauer which has to do with the angle they’ve been running on MLW television. The idea is to have Azteca Underground as the spiritual successor to the old Lucha Underground group.”

MLW Never Say Never Results (3/31): Jacob Fatu vs Calvin Tankman

Major League Wrestling presented a special branded episode of Fusion last night. The main event featured Jacob Fatu of Contra Unit defending his MLW World Championship against Calvin Tankman.

The full episode can be viewed in the player below:

MLW Never Say Never Quick Results:

  1. Jordan Oliver defeated Simon Gotch
  2. Myron Reed defeated Daivari
  3. MLW World Championship
Jacob Fatu (c) defeated Calvin Tankman

Jordan Oliver defeats Simon Gotch

https://twitter.com/MLW/status/1377399558427320325

Injustice’s Jordan Oliver picked up a win in the night’s opening contest over his rival from Contra Unit, Simon Gotch. These two factions have been feuding for some time now and with the win, Olliver put his faction in the lead.

Gotch got in some early submission attempts and had control initially but Oliver battled back. After having multiple springboard cutter attempts thwarted during the match, Oliver finally hit it on his 3rd try and got the 3-count.

It’s a big win for Oliver, who picks up a measure of revenge after dropping his title match against Fatu recently.

Further Dragongate Involvement in MLW Teased

https://twitter.com/MLW/status/1377441092388356101

MLW is promoting that its relationship with the Dragongate promotion will continue into 2021. There have been rumors as of late that DAZN is hoping MLW and the Japanese promotion will throw a joint event in Hawaii. Hopefully, it will be much more organized than Tom Lawlor’s sketchy “Filthy Island” event.

Myron Reed Defeats Daivari

https://twitter.com/MLW/status/1377403333376274434

The second match between Contra Unit and Injustice saw Myron Reed pick up a victory over Daivari. The crafty veteran from Contra Unit opted to focus on Reed’s leg and ankle in an attempt to gain the advantage. Reed was able to thwart off Daivari’s offense, however, and then deliver his own. He landed a cutter followed by a vest-assisted springboard 450 splash for the win. With that, Injustice has won the series vs Contra Unit but up next is the most important match of the night. Calvin Tankman has been loosely aligned with Injustice as of late and will attempt to defeat Jacob Fatu for the MLW title.

Gino Medina vs Richard Holliday For the Caribbean Championship – April 14th

https://twitter.com/MLW/status/1377404990755602434

Alicia Atout hosted an interview with Gino Medina and Richard Holliday this week. Holliday and Medina can’t seem to agree on whether Medina was fired from the Dynasty or he quit. The two bicker for sometime, with Atout once complaining that Holliday wears too much cologne. Doesn’t seem like Holiday liked that.

Holiday and Medina will face each other on the April 14th show in what is now the second title match booked for that event.

Jacob Fatu Needs Contra Unit’s Help To Defeat Calvin Tankman

https://twitter.com/MLW/status/1377409737206140928

Two big heavyweights clashed over the world title in the Never Say Never main event this week. While the champion has been used to much smaller opponents during his reign, he would not enjoy such an advantage in this title defence.

The finish of the match came as Tankman was ramping up the offence. He’d scored near falls after a backbreaker and a lariat. This caused Daivari to attempt to interfere but Tankman fought him off. With the referee’s attention diverted, however, Fatu hit Tankman with the Contra flag. He then went to the top and delivered his moonsault for the win.

Fatu retains his title yet again, but Tankman had him on the run, forcing him to resort to underhanded tactics to gain the victory.

Coming Up In MLW

MLW presents a classic episode next week but then presents a big show. After that, there are two title matches booked for the April 14th show.

MLW Fusion – April 14th

  • MLW National Openweight Championship
Alexander Hammerstone (c) vs Mil Muertes
  • Caribbean Championship
Richard Holiday (c) vs Gino Medina

MLW Confirms Partnership With Dragon Gate Is Still Intact

MLW has confirmed that their partnership with the Japanese wrestling promotion Dragon Gate Pro-Wrestling is still intact despite the year-long halt due to coronavirus.

This partnership had been announced only a month before the pandemic began and both the companies haven’t been able to work together due to travel restrictions that had been put in place.

This year-long halt made many believe that we might not see the two promotions working together anymore but they have confirmed that this is not the case.

MLW aired a new vignette during their Never Say Never event and in the video package seen below they announced that “The gate from Japan has been opened to the Americas”

https://twitter.com/mlw/status/1377400816777183232?s=12

The company announced some championship matches for the April 14 episode of Fusion as well confirming that Alex Hammerstone will defend the National Openweight Championship against Mil Muertes.

It was also announced that Gino Medina will be challenging the IWA Caribbean Heavyweight Champion Richard Holliday for his title during the show.

More information on the alliance between MLW and Dragon Gate is expected to be revealed in near future. It will be interesting to see how this partnership materializes. Stay tuned for more information on the deal between the promotions.

Gino Medina Uses Under-Handed Tactics To Score Victory Over Zenshi

https://twitter.com/MLW/status/1374862382653132805

Gino Medina took a shortcut to victory this week when he faced Zenshi in singles competition. Zenshi had just hit a kick in the corner and looked as though he was in control. Medina then rolled him up into a small package for a 2-count but as Zenshi kicked out, Medina grabbed at his mask and nearly removed it. As Zenshi was adjusting his mask, Medina hit a question-mark style kick to the back of the head and got the pin.

Mil Muertes Picks Up Win, Will Face Alexander Hammerstone On April 14th

https://twitter.com/MLW/status/1374866302700023812

Azteca Underground’s Mil Muertes came out for his match with Gringo Loco this week wearing Alexander Hammerstone’s National Openweight Championship. Muertes stole the title from Hammer recently after Salina de la Renta suggested she wanted the belt in her stable.

Muertes put away Loco with the Straight To Hell flatliner. After the match, Hammerstone cut a backstage promo and agreed to give Muertes a shot at the title belt he stole on April 14th.

Later in the show, Salina said she agreed to Hammerstone’s challenge. El Jefe’s representative then told her that the proprietor of Azteca Underground was not happy and wants to meet with her.

https://twitter.com/MLW/status/1374868873770582017

1-week before he takes on Contra Unit’s Jacob Fatu for the MLW World Championship, Calvin Tankman made quick work of a Sendai Death Squad member on this week’s edition of Fusion.

After the match, Daivari, Simon Gotch, and Jacob Fatu marched to the ring. The members of Injustice then came out to help Tankman and a wild brawl erupted. Tankman gave Daivari the Tankman Driver and stood tall in the ring to end the segment.

Chain Match Between The Von Erichs and Team Filthy Headlines Fusion

https://twitter.com/MLW/status/1374873282172776454

Tom Lawlor removed himself from this match on short notice citing injuries. MLW league officials are a little skeptical of his claims, however. Instead of a 6-man match with the Von Erichs teaming with ACH, the match was changed to a 2-on-2 contest with Lawlor and ACH both removed from the bout.

The ropes were replaced with chains for this bout, creating a unique match environment. Lawlor was on the outside with his arm in a sling and frequently got involved in the match. The finish came when Lawlor attempted to toss brass knuckles into his stablemates but missed and they landed in the hands of Marshall Von Erich. He decked Kevin Ku and then delivered the Iron Claw-slam with his brother on Garrinni for the win.

Last week on Fusion, Lio Rush put an open contract up on the wall in the back. Evidently, Brian Pillman Jr. was the first to answer the call and he was granted a shot against Rush this week. After a back and forth match, Rush hit a springboard stunner off the bottom rope followed by his patented frog splash for the win.

https://twitter.com/MLW/status/1372330265679441921

Azteca Underground’s Mil Muertes defeated Mike Parrow this week. Presented by Salina de la Renta, Muertes pinned Parrow after delivering his patented “Straight to Hell” flatliner. That’s 2 wins in a row for the former Lucha Underground Champion, who defeated Savio Vega at Filthy Island.

Muertes and Alexander Hammerstone appear headed to a big match. Last week, Muertes stole Hammerstone’s National Openweight title. Hammerstone cut a promo on the “Man of 1000 Deaths” this week but it is still not clear when he might be able to get his hands on him.

TJP Suspended, Bu Ku Dao Injured

https://twitter.com/MLW/status/1372367442895368194

A scheduled match between TJP and Bu Ku Dao did not take place this week. Alicia Atout reported that Bu Ku Dao was injured, there had been some type of incident, and TJP has been suspended. We will likely find out more in the coming weeks.

3-on-3 Chain Match Upcoming Between Team Filthy and The Von Erichs & ACH

Tom Lawlor wants revenge for how the Von Erichs ruined his Filthy Island event. Lawlor cut a promo this week saying him and Team Filthy want to face the Von Erich brothers and their Texan ally, ACH, in a chain match. That match will take place next week.

Azteca Underground Dominates as the Mystery of El Jefe Deepens

https://twitter.com/MLW/status/1372335067201159170

This week fans were treated to an expose segment on Azteca Underground. The piece noted that the mysterious “El Jefe” is looking for rental property somewhere, preferably with no police presence nearby.

Azteca Underground’s Los Parks would also defend the MLW tag-team championships this week. The match was originally just to be between Los Parks and Injustice but after members of Contra Unit were involved in a brawl in the back, they were added to the match as well. In the end, it would be LA Park hitting the Spear on Jordan Oliver for the win.

Los Parks and Salina de la Renta celebrated in the ring with the belts to close the show. It was a good night for their Azteca Underground stable.

MLW’s Court Bauer Teases Potential New TV Deal

Major League Wrestling’s Court Bauer is teasing that his company has a new television rights deal in the works. Currently, episodes of Fusion air on BeIN Sports, Roku, the Fobu Sports Network, and YouTube. According to a recent Tweet from Bauer, fans will be pleased with what his company is currently working on.

https://twitter.com/courtbauer/status/1371966671519428609

Fusion is back tonight with a full card. 4 matches have been scheduled with titles on the line in 2 of them. Lio Rush put out an Open Challenge last week and somebody has accepted, we just don’t know who yet. Los Parks will also look to defend their MLW Tag Team Championships against Myron Reed and Jordan Oliver of Injustice. Student will face teacher tonight as well when TJP takes on Bu Ku Dao. TJP recently turned heel in the promotion after failing to capture the tag belts along with Dao.

Mil Muertes will return to action tonight as well when he takes on Mike Parrow. MLW has also promised an expose on the mysterious Azteca Underground faction tonight.

https://twitter.com/MLW/status/1372197303835058178

Later this month, MLW will present 2021’s “Never Say Never.” An MLW World Championship match has been booked for the show. Jacob Fatu of Contra Unit will defend against Calvin Tankman. The members of Injustice and Tankman appear to be building an alliance as of late as well.

Mil Muertes & Azteca Underground Continue Invasion of MLW

A mysterious group known only as “Azteca Underground” has infiltrated Major League Wrestling. The group’s owner has never been named but is said to have a lot of money and is referred to as “El Jefe” frequently on Fusion. Azteca Underground has purchased Salina de la Renta’s “Promociones Dorado” faction.

Former Lucha Underground Champion, Mil Muertes, has arrived in the promotion as well. He defeated Savio Vega in an Azteca Jungle Fight on MLW’s special “Filthy Island” event. Muertes then returned to MLW on Fusion this week, attacking Alexander Hammerstone and stealing his National Openweight Championship.

MLW recently Tweeted out a link to the Azteca Underground website with a clip of Muertes’ attack on Hammerstone:

https://twitter.com/mlw/status/1370210437623644162?s=12

Mil Muertes and Azteca Underground

The Azteca Underground website has received some updates since it was first published. Currently, the mysterious webmaster is asking his followers to help with rental space:

So far, the only official members of Azteca Underground are Mil Muertes, Salina de la Renta, LA Park, LA Park Jr. and El Hijo de LA Park. Los Parks currently hold the MLW World Tag Team titles after winning them from Ross & Marshall Von Erich.

MLW Fusion (3/10): Mil Muertes Attacks Hammerstone

MLW Fusion 3/10 Quick Results:

  1. Gino Medina defeated El Gringo Loco
  2. ACH defeated Kevin Ku
  3. MLW National Openweight Championship
Alexander Hammerstone (c) defeated LA Park

Here are the key takeaways from the show:

Alliance Building Between Injustice and Calvin Tankman

https://twitter.com/MLW/status/1369801608423411712

Calvin Tankman came to the aid of Injustice last week on Fusion. He’s also been calling out heavyweight champion Jacob Fatu. There appears as though an alliance of sorts building between Tankman and Injustice. This week, Reed and Oliver showed their appreciation for Tankman’s help last week and invited him to join with them against Contra Unit or just for a smoking session.

Gino Medina Defeats Gringo Loco

https://twitter.com/MLW/status/1369804459023425538

Former member of the Dynasty, Gino Medina, faced off against Chicago’s favorite luchador, Gringo Loco, this week. Medina’s father was a famous luchador in Mexico, El Sanguinario, who was once a member of the Los Gringos Locos faction.

Medina picked up the win after landing what looked like a question-mark kick to the back of Loco’s head.

After the match, Medina called out his former Dynasty stablemate, Richard Holliday. The last time we saw those two together, they couldn’t seem to agree on if Medina left the stable or if Holliday fired him. It was later revealed that Medina and Holliday got into a backstage brawl and were ejected from the building.

MLW World Middleweight Rankings

https://twitter.com/MLW/status/1369805783475568644

Last week on Fusion, the league released top-5 rankings for its tag division for the first time. This week, they did the same with its middleweight division.

MLW World Middleweight Champion: Lio Rush

  1. Laredo Kid
  2. Daivari (Contra Unit)
  3. Myron Reed (Injustice)
  4. Bu Ku Dao
  5. Brian Pillman Jr.
https://twitter.com/TheLionelGreen/status/1369807841893048321

After the rankings were released, Alicia Atout reported that Rush has posted an open contract to the wall in the back. Evidently, Rush feels confident that he can defend his title against anyone. Later in the show, it was revealed that someone had taken the contract but we still don’t know who.

ACH Picks Up Measure Of Revenge Against Team Filthy

https://twitter.com/MLW/status/1369808225890168832

Team Filthy is believed to be behind a recent attack on ACH that left him with injured ribs. This week, ACH was able to pick up a measure of revenge on the faction by defeating member Kevin Ku.

ACH received a little help from the Von Erich brothers in this match as well. As ACH was on the outside, Ku’s teammate Dominic Garrini looked to get involved but Ross and Marshall ran out to prevent him from doing so. ACH then dove on top of the pile on the outside before hitting a brainbuster on Ku inside the ring for the win.

https://twitter.com/MLW/status/1369809458415738882

The Texas-based wrestlers stood tall in the ring but Tom Lawlor made his way out for a promo. Lawlor had announced earlier in the night that he plans on suing the Von Erichs for what they did to him during his Filthy Island special.

Hammerstone Defends Openweight Title Against LA Park

https://twitter.com/MLW/status/1369815205438517252

Alexander Hammerstone had to face all 3 members of Los Parks in this match. It didn’t take long for LA Park to lure the referee out of position and allow his sons to get in some cheap shots on the champion. Hammerstone also had no back-up since Holliday had been ejected from the building after brawling with Gino Medina.

Further interference from Los Parks allowed their father to hit his patented spear on the champion. This normally pins anyone but not Hammer! He kicked out at 2. Park would try another spear but Hammerstone got his foot up, hit a German duplex and then landed an elbow to the back of the head for the win.

Mil Muertes Attacks Alexander Hammerstone

https://twitter.com/MLW/status/1369815759438888961

After the match, Mil Muertes came out and attacked Hammerstone. The champion was left laying as Muertes motioned for Salina de la Renta to enter the ring. The “Man of a 1000 deaths” handed Salina the title belt and she held it up to close the show.

Jacob Fatu Retains MLW World Championship

https://twitter.com/MLW/status/1367278622558412801

The Contra Unit and Injustice rivalry had its biggest match to date this week when Jordan Oliver challenged Jacob Fatu for the MLW World Championship. Fatu picked up the win after a Samoan Drop followed by his patented top-rope moonsault. After the match, the members of Contra Unit continued the attack on both Reed and Oliver. Members of the Sentai Death Squad ran in with body bags to place the Injustice members in.

https://twitter.com/MLW/status/1367279122548879361

The big heavyweight Calvin Tankman would make the save, however. He both protected Injustice from a further beatdown and puts himself in the conversation for a future title shot against Fatu.

Injustice Prevent Contra Unit From Winning Tag Team Gold

https://twitter.com/MLW/status/1367267294464929797

Simon Gotch and Daivari of Contra Unit received a tag-team title match against Los Parks this week. Los Parks attempted their normal routine of bringing in a fresh member of the family from under the ring to enter the match illegally. The referee thwarted this attempt, however. While the referee was distracted, Jordan Oliver and Myron Reed of Injustice interfered and allowed LA Park to hit a spear on Daivari for the win.

Parrow Wants To Be The Most Dominant Heavyweight In MLW

https://twitter.com/MLW/status/1367269307797880832

Before Mike Parrow hit the ring for his match against Jason Dugan this week, clips of an interview with him were shown. Parrow said he wants to be the most dominant heavyweight in the promotion. He made quick work of Dugan, pinning him after delivering his patented “Murder Bomb.” After the match, Parrow cut a promo on Azteca Underground’s Mil Muertes, setting up a future heavyweight clash.

Calvin Tankman Defeats Laredo Kid

https://twitter.com/MLW/status/1367272830950281216

Mike Parrow wasn’t the only heavyweight to leave a mark on this episode of MLW Fusion. Calvin Tankman picked up a win over Laredo Kid. It took awhile for Tankman to wear down his opponent enough to deliver a Tankman Driver, but once he did, it was all over. After the match, Tankman said he wants the added money that comes with being MLW World Champion and called out Jacob Fatu.

Dynasty Alliance With Alicia Atout Brewing?

https://twitter.com/MLW/status/1367273585988038659

There are people who believe the Dynasty’s Richard Holliday has developed a bit of a thing for Alicia Atout. The commentator and “Interview Queen” has been feuding with Salina de la Renta as of late and this week Salina said she wants Alexander Hammerstone’s National Openweight gold in her stable. She also referred to Holliday as Atout’s “boy toy.” Richard Holliday promised Atout that the Dynasty would handle the situation.

Top-5 Tag-Team Rankings Released

https://twitter.com/MLW/status/1367422316129505282

MLW debuted a new format to its rankings. This week instead of top-10 singles rankings, MLW announced top-5 rankings for its tag-team division.

MLW Tag-Team Rankings:

MLW Tag Team Champions: Los Parks (Azteca Underground)

MLW Announces “Never Say Never” Signature Event

MLW’s next signature event will be “Never Say Never” on Wednesday, March 31st. The show will air on YouTube, Roku, DaZN, and Fubo Sports. It will also air on BeIN Sports on Saturday, April 3rd, 2021.

“In continuing our efforts to give back to the MLW diehard fans, we look forward to giving them the fastest hour of action featuring the climax of rivalries and a championship title fight,” said Court Bauer.

This will be the first signature event for MLW since last month’s Kings of the Colosseum event on January 6th, 2021. Much like last month’s event, this show will run about 55-60 minutes and fit in one episode of MLW Fusion.

The promotion has not been announcing where their shows are being taped, though the venue most recently used looks an awful lot like Orlando’s Gilt nightclub.

There will be no episode of MLW Fusion this week. Rather, the league will be airing a classic episode of MLW Underground from its original run.

On the most recent episode of Fusion, MLW released its updated top-10 rankings:

MLW World Champion: Jacob Fatu (Contra Unit)

  1. Alexander Hammerstone (National Openweight Champion) (Dynasty)
  2. Tom Lawlor (Opera Cup Winner) (Team Filthy)
  3. Lio Rush (MLW Middleweight Champion)
  4. Low Ki
  5. Mads Krugger (Contra Unit)
  6. Richard Holliday (Dynasty)
  7. Mil Muertes (Azteca Underground)
  8. Myron Reed (Injustice)
  9. Calvin Tankman
  10. Jordan Oliver (Injustice)

MLW Teases Dario Cueto Involvement In Azteca Underground

Salina de la Renta appears to be bringing some aspects of the cult-favorite show, Lucha Underground, into MLW. This started when she summoned former Lucha Underground Champion, Mil Muertes to the promotion. Recently in MLW, Salina’s Promociones Dorado faction was purchased by a mysterious group named Azteca Underground.

On MLW Fusion, Salina referred to the owner of Azteca Underground as someone very wealthy. Los Parks commented this week that they know who the owner is but are keeping the information secret.

There is a section on the Azteca Underground website labeled “The Proprieter.” It has a picture of someone standing outside a building from a distance. Some say the picture resembles the former Lucha Underground owner, Dario Cueto.

Screen Shot 2021 02 19 at 10.07.07 AM

While the performer behind the Mil Muertes character owns the rights to it, it’s not clear if MLW would be able to use the name, Dario Cueto. They could just go with Cueto’s “El Jefe” nickname. The El Rey Network, which formerly aired Lucha Underground, has gone out of business, however.

Recently on Fusion, Mil Muertes defeated Savio Vega in an “Aztec Jungle Fight.” This match was setup after Vega refused an offer from Salina to purchase a share of his IWA promotion in Puerto Rico.

MLW Fusion will not air next week. Rather, a classic episode of MLW Underground will air in its place.

MLW Filthy Island Preview: Aztek Jungle Fight, No Holds Barred

Update On Former Lucha Underground Writer’s Relationship With MLW

On recent episodes of MLW Fusion, Salina de la Renta has summoned former Lucha Underground Champion, Mil Muertes to the promotion. Salina’s faction, Promociones Dorado, has also recently been purchased by a mysterious organization known as, Azteca Underground. Lucha Underground characters appearing in MLW has led to much speculation regarding the nature of the relationship.

Former Lucha Underground head writer, Chris DeJoseph, briefly worked for MLW in 2019. DeJoseph was hired by MLW but left the company just one month later to rejoin WWE. DeJoseph was then fired by WWE 6 months later. He also worked on the WWE Creative Team from 2004-2010. MLW’s Court Bauer also would have worked with DeJoseph in WWE at the same. Bauer was on the WWE Creative Team from 2005 until 2007.

According to the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, the former creative lead for Lucha Underground recently made contact with MLW about coming back but was turned down. DeJoseph also recently interviewed with Impact Wrestling. “Chris DeJoseph recently had an interview to come in (to Impact Wrestling) as a writer. He had contact with MLW and he was turned down,” wrote Dave Meltzer.

Update: SEScoops reached out to MLW to obtain clarification on this report. According to a high-ranking official, Chris DeJoseph had “no talks” with Chris DeJoseph and the Observer report is inaccurate.

MLW Teasing More Lucha Underground Content With Azteca Underground

Major League Wrestling (MLW) appears to be introducing a brand known as Azteca Underground.

MLW star Salina de la Renta’s “Promociones Dorado” organization has been purchased by Azteca Underground, Inc. The purchase occurred shortly after Salina brought former Lucha Underground Champion, Mil Muertes, to the fight league.

Additionally, MLW has been re-tweeting posts from a newly created Azteca Underground account. The mysterious company (and the association to Mil Muertes) are drawing comparisons to shuttered wrestling promotion, Lucha Underground.

Mil Muertes was a featured character on the cult-favorite show, Lucha Underground, from 2014-2018. Unlike other characters on the show, however, Ricky Banderas obtained the rights to be able to portray Muertes outside of Lucha Underground. MLW has kept the character’s appearance and back story, noting that he was buried alive during the Mexico City Earthquake in 1985. This is what led to Muertes developed a deep connection with death.

Also of note here, is that the network that formerly aired Lucha Underground, the El Rey Network, shut down broadcasting on January 1st.

There have also been reports that MLW is looking at developing a second weekly show as well as special events for DAZN. Muertes recently defeated Brian Pillman Jr. in his first match with MLW.

MLW Fusion This Week

This week on MLW Fusion, we will get the culmination of a long-running feud between Richard Holliday and Savio Vega. TJP will team with Bukudao to go up against Team Filthy’s Violence is Forever (Dominic Garrini & Kevin Ku).

  • Caribbean Strap Match
    Richard Holliday vs Savio Vega
  • TJP & Bukudao vs Violence is Forever (Dominic Garrini & Kevin Ku)

Also in MLW, Salina de la Renta is building a feud with interviewer Alicia Atout. They have been exchanging insults on social media as of late.

MLW Fusion (1/20): Injustice Spoils Contra Unit’s Clean Sweep

MLW Fusion on 1/20 featured a World Championship match between Jacob Fatu and ACH. Two other members of Contra Unit were also in action last night as Simon Gotch took on Jordan Oliver and Daivari faced Zenshi.

The full show can be viewed in the player below:

MLW Fusion 1/20 Quick Results:

  1. Daivari (Contra Unit) defeated Zenshi
  2. Simon Gotch (Contra Unit) defeated Jordan Oliver (Injustice)
  3. MLW World Championship
Jacob Fatu (Contra Unit) (c) defeated ACH

Here are 6 key takeaways from MLW Fusion 1/20:

Daivari Picks Up First Win For Contra Unit

https://twitter.com/MLW/status/1352046500646277123

While Josef Samael isn’t able to physically be in the venue for recent MLW events, he’s added new troops since the restart. In addition to “The Black Hand of Contra” Mads Krugger, the faction has added Daivari to its ranks as well.

The finish of this match came when Zenshi missed a 450 splash and Daivari hit a hammerlock short-arm clothesline for the win.

Caribbean Strap Match Scheduled

https://twitter.com/MLW/status/1352047507438649345

Savio Vega is finally going to get his hands on Richard Holliday. He might even get his Caribbean Championship belt back. Holliday has been proclaiming himself as the title-holder for months, despite not officially defeating Vega for it. This week, Savio Vega sent in a promo and promised to use the very same strap that he and Steve Austin beat each other with on Holliday. Later in the show, Holliday said he would accept the terms in the contract he was sent for the match.

This long-running feud will reach a boiling point next week when Richard Holliday faces Savio Vega in a Caribbean Strap Match.

Simon Gotch Picks Up 2nd Win For Contra Unit

https://twitter.com/MLW/status/1352049017304322056

We were supposed to get this match at Kings of the Colosseum but Gotch went MIA for the event, only returning to aid in a Contra Unit assault on Injustice. While Jordan Oliver provided significant competition for Gotch, it would be the Contra member’s submission skills that would earn him the victory here. The finish of the match came when Oliver springboarded off the ropes but was caught in a sleeper by Gotch. The ref called for the bell but Gotch wasn’t done. He held onto the submission after the bell and then gave Oliver a Gotch-driver.

Jacob Fatu Retains Title Over ACH

https://twitter.com/MLW/status/1352056315380703236

ACH went into his title match against Jacob Fatu with taped up ribs. This was due to an attack that took place outside his gym. It’s not clear who attacked ACH, but he would say he thought he heard the voice of Dominic Garrini from Team Filthy. Is Tom Lawlor upset that ACH is getting a title shot before him? Lawlor denied these allegations when confronted with them by Alicia Atout earlier.

ACH took a beating in the early parts of the match. He mounted a comeback despite his injuries, however. He hit a springboard cutter, a hurricanrana, and an enziguri but Fatu countered with a hard kick and followed that up with a pop-up Samoan Drop and then his springboard moonsault finish for the win.

Injustice Spoils Contra Unit’s Clean Sweep

https://twitter.com/MLW/status/1352056566984241158

It seemed as though nothing could go wrong for Contra Unit on this night. They’d won all 3 matches on the card including Jacob Fatu defending the World Championship. As Daivari and Fatu were cutting a promo on the stage at the end of the night, they were suddenly attacked by two flag-bearing members of the Sentai Death Squad. As the two members unmasked, they were revealed to be Jordan Oliver and Myron Reed of Injustice. Contra Unit may have won all 3 matches this night, but it would be Injustice who would close the show getting the last laugh.

Also this week in MLW

https://twitter.com/MLW/status/1352051534004043776
  • Tom Lawlor and Team Filthy denied allegations that they attacked ACH before his match with Jacob Fatu. His faction found a creative way to pronounce “ACH” but said they aren’t worried about him and are focussing on the coming debut of “Filthy Island.”
  • Salina de la Renta blew off Alicia Atout’s questions about the change of ownership regarding Promociones Dorado. Salina says the only thing anyone should be worried about is what Mil Muertes is going to do next.
  • Mads Krugger cut a promo directed at Alexander Hammerstone. The two wrestlers fought to a draw at Kings of the Colosseum but now they will square off in 2 weeks in a Baklei Brawl.

MLW Fusion Results (1/13): Los Parks Win Tag Titles, Mil Muertes Debuts

Salina de la Renta served as executive producer for this week’s edition of MLW Fusion. She booked the Von Erichs in a title match and stacked the decks in favor of the challenging Los Parks team. Salina also introduced former Lucha Underground Champion Mil Muertes to the league.

You can watch the full episode in the player below:

MLW Fusion 1/13 Quick Results

  1. Low-Ki defeated Budd Heavy via referee stoppage
  2. Mil Muertes defeated Brian Pillman Jr.
  3. MLW World Tag Team Championships
Los Parks defeated The Von Erichs (c) – New Champions

Here are 7 key takeaways from MLW Fusion 1/13:

Low-Ki Makes Short Work of Budd Heavy

https://twitter.com/MLW/status/1349617998630449153

Low-Ki needed just 8 seconds to defeat Budd Heavy this week. The bell rang, Low-Ki charged at his opponent and drilled him in the face. Budd Heavy went down and Budd Heavy never got back up again. The ref called for the bell. After the match, Low-Ki had a few words for American Top Team to the camera. King Mo and Dan Lambert have been saying that Low-Ki shouldn’t even be cleared to compete but the former MLW World Champion seems to be gunning for revenge on team.

Konnan Is Missing & There Is Concern For His Well-Being

https://twitter.com/MLW/status/1349509785692073984

It was noted this week on commentary that nobody has heard from Konnan in days. Salina de la Renta has been promising to get revenge on Konnan for weeks after he revealed that Salina aided Contra Unit in the coup attempt at the MLW head offices this spring. She ordered a video tape be played of her in San Diego delivering a message to Konnan. In the video, Salina seems to imply that Konnan is no longer alive, perhaps having come face to face with the “Man of 1000 Deaths” Mil Muertes. Salina implied that Konnan’s only legacy left to wrestling will be that he was the one who forced her to summon Muertes and bring him into MLW.

Mil Muertes Destroys Brian Pillman Jr.

https://twitter.com/MLW/status/1349649960241930240

Brian Pillman Jr. pulled off a “Rick Rude” last night. He was on both MLW Fusion and AEW Dynamite. He ran into stiff competition on both shows, however. There was nothing Pillman could do against Muertes here. All of his chops and strikes failed to register on Salina’s new monster. Muertes fired back with chops and strikes of his own, several clotheslines, a power slam, and finally his Straight To Hell (flat-liner) finish for the win. Muertes, under the control of Salina, could run complete rough shot over the entire league.

MLW Strikes Up Deal With IWA Puerto Rico, Richard Holliday Comments

MLW has partnerships with promotions in many of wrestling’s top hot spots, like Japan and Mexico. They’ve now added IWA Puerto Rico to the mix. The league announced the alliance this week on Fusion.

Puerto Rican wrestling icon, Savio Vega, had his Caribbean Championship stolen by Richard Holliday before the shutdown. Holliday said this week that he’s upset that neither MLW nor IWA give him the proper recognition of being the Caribbean Champion. He invited the actual champion to face him in the ring.

MLW Top-10

The MLW top-10 rankings brought to you by Pro Wrestling Illustrated were announced on this week’s show. They are as follows:

MLW World Champion: Jacob Fatu (Contra Unit)

  1. Alexander Hammerstone (National Openweight Champion) (Dynasty)
  2. Tom Lawlor (Opera Cup Winner)
  3. Low-Ki
  4. LA Park (Promociones Dorado)
  5. Lio Rush
  6. Richard Holliday (Dynasty)
  7. Mads Krugger (Contra Unit)
  8. Myron Reed (Injustice)
  9. ACH
  10. Laredo Kid

 Promociones Dorado Sold?

https://twitter.com/MLW/status/1349585786514120704

Salina de la Renta was having a great time all night long as she produced this week’s episode. Then before the main event, Rich Bocchini informed her that he just heard Promociones Dorado had been sold. Salina tried to no-sell this but the confusion and anger was evident on her face. She stormed off the set.

It was later revealed that Salina’s organization has been sold to Azteca Underground Inc. An update on MLW.com reads as follows:

“MLW.com can confirm Promociones Dorado is now a subsidiary of Azteca Underground, Inc., a California based company. However, details remain unclear beyond this.”

Los Parks Win MLW World Tag Team Championships From The Von Erichs

https://twitter.com/MLW/status/1349518623396782080

Salina de la Renta could not have stacked the deck any more in favor of Los Parks in this match. Longtime Von Erich rival, Tom Lawlor, was chosen as the special guest referee and he made no secret of the fact he was trying to help Los Parks win. There were numerous incidents of him trying to fast count the Von Erichs and delivering slow counts whenever one of the brothers would try to pin a Park.

It looked like the Von Erichs had the match won after an Iron Claw Slam but Salina came in the ring and sprayed mace in the eye of Ross. As Marshall was checking on him, LA Park speared him out of the ring. LA Park Jr. then came up from under the ring and joined his father and brother in attacking the Von Erichs. This allowed LA Park to hit a spear on Ross as well. Lawlor, who had tumbled out of the ring, finally got back inside and delivered a fast count on Ross and awarded the victory and the titles to Los Parks.

Mil Muertes To Debut On MLW Fusion This Week

Mexican wrestling star Mil Muertes is set to debut for Major League Wrestling this week on MLW Fusion.

The “Man of 1,000 Deaths” has been summoned to MLW by Salina De La Renta, who will serve as Executive Producer of MLW Fusion for the next few weeks.

Mil Muertes was previously known as Ricky Banderas when he wrestled in Puerto Rico. He was a 5-time IWA Heavyweight Champion. In Mexico City he was known as El Mesias, where he held the AAA Heavyweight Championship 4 times.

Mil Muertes reigned supreme in Lucha Underground. His death grip loomed over all… until his temple fell. Since then, he has wandered the earth with an unquenchable desire for revenge. The “seemingly invincible” Mil Muertes now looks to build a shrine of death with the bodies of the men he’s conquered and careers destroyed.

Mil Muertes Arrives in MLW

Wednesday’s episode of MLW Fusion will feature:

  • MLW World Tag Team Champions The Von Erichs vs. Los Parks: Tornado Match with “Filthy” Tom Lawlor serving as special guest referee
  • Mil Muertes will debut. There is an ‘open contract’ for whoever chooses to fight him.

MLW Fusion premieres this Wednesday, January 13 at 7PM (Eastern) on MLW’s YouTube Channel, Fubo Sports, DAZN and Roku.

Catch up on the latest MLW News and check our takeaways from last week’s Kings of Colosseum special:

MLW Kings of the Colosseum Results: Lio Rush Wins Middleweight Title

It was a big night for MLW last night as the promotion presented Kings of the Colosseum 2021. 2 championship matches and one heavyweight grudge match took place on the show.

The show is available to stream for free on YouTube below:

MLW Kings of the Colosseum Quick Results:

  1. MLW Tag Team Championships
    Texas Tornado Match
The Von Erichs (Ross & Marshall Von Erich) (c) defeated the Dirty Blondes (Leo Brien and Michael Patrick)
  2. MLW Middleweight Championship
Lio Rush defeated Myron Reed (c) – New Champion
  3. Alexander Hammerstone vs Mads Krugger – Double count-out

Here are the key takeaways from the show:

The Von Erichs Dispose of the Dirty Blondes

https://twitter.com/MLW/status/1346972819058434049

The Von Erichs took on Aria Blake’s Dirty Blondes team with the tag belts on the line to kick off the show. This match turned into a brawl pretty much immediately and stayed that way throughout. They brawled around ringside and even outside of the venue for a bit before ending up back in the ring.

Aria Blake attempted to get involved but the Von Erichs quickly thwarted her interference. The brothers then hit an Iron Claw slam onto Patrick and got the victory.

Lio Rush Wins MLW Middleweight Championship

https://twitter.com/MLW/status/1347016356160446468

This match was interesting in that it appeared that Myron Reed was wrestling as a babyface. It seems the members of Injustice are making a turn. Unlike the brawl which preceded it, this match was all about athleticism and technical prowess rather than pure fighting.

Reed looked like he had things won when he hit a springboard cutter that landed his opponent face-first on the floor around ringside. The champion then tossed his challenger back in the ring but missed a springboard splash. Rush then followed this up by springboarding off the bottom rope into a stunner. The Man of the Hour then hit a frog splash and got the pin to win the title.

Salina De La Renta To Produce Next Week’s Episode

https://twitter.com/MLW/status/1346980871862104065

Salina de la Renta returned from Mexico City this week. As of late, she has been summoning former Lucha Underground Champion Mil Muertes. Salina is hoping that Muertes will be able to gain a measure of revenge for her on Konnan, who exposed her aiding Contra Unit’s takeover of MLW offices this spring.

Salina revealed that Los Parks will challenge the Von Erichs for the tag belts next week.

Contra Unit Attacks Myron Reed

https://twitter.com/MLW/status/1346981375367401473

Myron Reed and Jordan Oliver of Injustice were cutting a promo backstage when they were attacked by Contra Unit. Shawn Daivari was amongst the attackers, making his debut in Contra Unit.

Simon Gotch and Oliver were supposed to wrestle on the show but Gotch was MIA before this attack and the match didn’t happen. It definitely appears that Injustice are being positioned as fan favorites in a program against Contra Unit.

MLW’s top-10 rankings via Pro Wrestling Illustrated returned this week as well:

Mads Krugger and Alexander Hammerstone Brawl To A Double Count-Out

https://twitter.com/MLW/status/1347049071329079301

The main event of the show saw Alexander Hammerstone and Mads Krugger brawl to a double count-out. Krugger has been sent by Contra Unit to take out Hammerstone, who they feel is the biggest threat to Jacob Fatu’s title.

Hammerstone threw around the 7-footer like he was nothing. He hit a pump-handle slam, overhead belly to belly suplex, and other big time moves. Still, Krugger kicked out at 1 after all of this offence. Krugger also stopped Hammerstone from hitting his Nightmare Pendulum near the end of the match. The two brawled around ringside and the ref eventually threw the match out.

Mil Muertes Coming To MLW

Former Lucha Underground Champion, Mil Muertes, is on his way to MLW. Recently on episodes of MLW Fusion, Salina de la Renta has been sending in videos of her from Mexico City. Last week, she teased fans by saying she was summoning Pascal Mendoza, a name Lucha Underground fans may have been familiar with.

Pascal Mendoza was the name of Mil Muertes’ character when he was a child. Mendoza was trapped in the rubble of the 1985 Mexico City earthquake where his association with death began.

This week on MLW Fusion, Salina de la Renta was seen practicing some type of ritual and appeared to be summoning Mil Muertes. In MLW’s storyline, Salina aided Contra Unit in their takeover of MLW’s corporate offices this spring. Konnan then revealed this fact, resulting in the league suspending her. Now, Salina is out for revenge and eveidently is summoning Mil Muertes for this purpose.

https://twitter.com/MLW/status/1339366951718592513

The Mil Muertes character was portrayed by Ricky Banderas in Lucha Underground. In addition to being a former Lucha Underground Champion, Banderas is a 4x AAA Mega Champion. Banderas also competed in TNA Wrestling in 07-08 under the name Judas Mesias. He was managed by Father James Mitchell in the promotion.

MLW Fusion Results (12/16): Tom Lawlor and ACH Clash In Main Event

Major League Wrestling on 12/16 featured the second semi-final match in the 2020 Opera Cup. The Black Hand of Contra was also in action this week and we learned more about what is upcoming at Kings of the Colosseum on January 6th, 2021.

Here are 7 takeaways from MLW Fusion 12/16:

Tom Lawlor Advances To The Opera Cup Finals

The main event of Fusion this week saw Tom Lawlor and ACH clash in the second semi-final match of the 2020 Opera Cup. Low-Ki has already advanced to the finals after defeating Richard Holliday in the first semi-final match.

After an exciting back and forth match, the finish of the match came when ACH went for a splash off the top rope but Lawlor got the knees up and then cradled ACH into a pinning combination for the win.

With that, the finals of the 2020 Opera Cup are set as Tom Lawlor will face Low-Ki. Lawlor cut a promo after the match and said they might as well make the trophy a crown because when he wins it, he’ll be the King of the mat.

Mads Krugger and Contra Unit Send A Message

https://twitter.com/MLW/status/1339365190333292544

The Black Hand of Contra, Mads Krugger, sent a message this week on Fusion. He took on 2 opponents at the same time and had little trouble with them. Meanwhile, on commentary they noted that Alexander Hammerstone was being restrained in the back from coming out to confront the man who attacked him weeks earlier.

After Krugger dispatched of his opponents, the Sentai Death Squad joined him in the ring. They wrapped their opponents in body bags and closed the segment standing tall.

It would later be reported that Hammerstone and Krugger were brawling in the backstage area. Then it was revealed that Hammerstone and Krugger will clash at Kings of the Colosseum.

Mil Muertes Is Coming To MLW

For the second week in a row, Salina de la Renta submitted a video of her travels to Mexico City. This week it appeared Salina was conducting some type of ritual in an effort to summon Pascal Mendoza, who is also known as Mil Muertes. The former Lucha Underground Champion appears to be on his way to MLW and might be part of Salina’s plan to get back at Konnan, who revealed her role in Contra Unit’s takeover of the MLW head offices this spring.

Dissension In the Dynasty?

Alexander Hammerstone and Richard Holliday pulled up to the building at the start of the show. Alicia Atout was there waiting to interview them. Holliday seemed annoyed at Atout being there but Hammerstone said that Holliday had just been going on and on about her. Then they were both attacked by some masked assailants. Holliday and Hammerstone turned the tables on their attackers but Holliday had to stop Hammerstone from ramming one attacker into his car. Holliday then expressed frustration with Hammerstone for what he said to Atout.

Bu Ku Dao Defeats LA Park Jr.

A couple of young prospects squared off in this week’s opening match. Bu Ku Dao had TJP in his corner for this match and LA Park Jr. had his father and his brother. Dao is barely 5-feet but clearly has a lot of skill in the ring. The Parks would take the opportunity to give Dao a few shots on the outside when the referee wasn’t looking as well.

The finish of the match came when Park Jr. had Dao locked up in a hammerlock guillotine submission but Dao cradled him into a pinning combination for the win. After the match, the Parks were not happy with the referee’s count.
