Billy Corgan Talks Helping To Create The “Broken” Universe In TNA

Billy Corgan’s National Wrestling Alliance is preparing for the 2020 version of the Crockett Cup this April. The promotion has taken big strides in the last few months with the debut of NWA Powerrr last fall. Billy Corgan spoke to Chris Van Vliet recently about what he learned during his time with Impact Wrestling.

“I was intimately involved and happily so with the whole Deletion angle, Broken Universe, got to shoot a lot of great stuff with Matt & Jeff,” Corgan said during the interview. “Shot on the Hardys property for the one crazy segment, drones, I mean we did it all. I can’t believe the fire marshalls didn’t show up.”

“Wrestling is 100+ years old and like music, a cynicism can creep in that tells you there’s really nothing new,” Corgan continued. “And kids and great ideas can prove over and over again that’s not true, you can always rewrite the rules of gravity.”

Corgan continued to talk about the Deletion angle. He explained how the angle taught him you can do new things in an old business.

“So being intimately involved with the Deletion angle told me that if you got a cool idea and you have great talented people like Matt and Jeff and the other people that were involved with that – Rosemary comes to mind, and Abyss, and Crazzy Steve – you can change the world. You can turn it upside down on its head. If you remember during that period of time, that was the most talked about thing in professional wrestling. Good and bad, as it should be.”

Corgan’s comments can be heard in the player below:

Billy Corgan Compares The NWA To The Smashing Pumpkins

Billy Corgan’s NWA is back on PPV in April with the 2020 edition of the Crockett Cup. An exact date and location for the show have yet to be announced, however. Corgan sat down with Chris Van Vliet recently to discuss his plans for the National Wrestling Alliance.

According to Corgan, he is approaching the NWA today the same way he has approached the music scene with his band, the Smashing Pumpkins.

“We are nowhere near as funded as the other companies that are being talked about,” Corgan said, noting that he is not himself a billionaire.

“Ring of Honor, AEW, and WWE are all owned by billionaires. So to even be in the conversation without that same level of resources, that’s more a credit to our hard work and our creativity and that’s exactly the way I raised the Smashing Pumpkins through the ranks of the rock business,” Corgan continued.

Corgan would continue to talk about the mentality the Smashing Pumpkins had.

“We had to be a better band, we had to tell better stories musically-speaking and that’s exactly the blueprint for the NWA.”`

Corgan also hinted during that the throwback feel to the NWA is being done to get people’s attention

“You have to get people’s attention first,” Corgan said. “If you don’t have their attention they are not going to listen to what you have to say down the road.”

Jim Cornette Confirms Original Planned Home For NWA TV Was WWE Network

On the latest episode of his Jim Cornette Experience podcast, Jim Cornette goes into detail regarding his former business with the NWA. During the discussion, Cornette confirmed that the NWA was originally hoping for its programming to land on the WWE Network.

“The NWA show was what they were thinking was going to end up on the (WWE) Network,” said Jim Cornette.

“Then (Lagana) started talking about ‘well, we’re going to do a TV show,” Cornette said. “I said ‘what do you mean, Dave?’ He said ‘well, we’re going to start doing TV.’ I said ‘what would it be on?’ and he said ‘well we’re not sure yet but we think it might be on the WWE Network.”

“He did have meetings unless he was just bald-faced lying to me,” Cornette continued. Cornette then said he was skeptical about this actually happening but

“I said ‘do you honestly believe that the WWF is going to put an NWA television show on their network?'” Cornette said he asked Lagana.

“Finally, he called and said ‘Well, we’re going to do it on YouTube,'” Cornette said of his conversation with Lagana.

“Originally the NWA show was going to be on the WWE Network and then that didn’t work out and they put it on YouTube,” Cornette continued.

Cornette then went into detail about what led to his departure from the organization.

Nick Aldis Wants To Wrestle Triple H At Starrcade

Nick Aldis holds the NWA Worlds Heavyweight Championship with pride and many believe that his long reign as the champion has brought some prestige back to the title.

The former TNA star recently had an interview with Chris Van Vliet, where he talked about a number of things and also revealed his dream opponent.

Aldis, who has been vocal about WWE not giving him an opportunity, interestingly said that his dream match would be competing for the NWA World title against none other than the Game, Triple H at Starrcade:

“The ultimate culmination of this [being NWA Worlds Heavyweight Champion] journey and given the historical context of all of this would be Triple H at Starrcade,” Aldis said.

I’ve heard he has a replica of the ten pounds of gold in a case in his office, and it’s like clearly he holds this [NWA Worlds Heavyweight Championship] in high esteem.”

Nick continued by explaining that it may seem like there is some sort of bitterness or negativity towards him and WWE but he claimed that he has nothing but love for the guys at the company.

Aldis revealed that there has been a steady communication between NWA and WWE about various things and per the NWA Champion, the guys at WWE have been very good to them.

Nick Aldis won the NWA Worlds Heavyweight Championship during the NWA 70th anniversary show and he has currently held the title for 469 days. You can check out his full interview in the video below:

Aron Stevens & The Question Mark Talk NWA Powerrr & Mongrovian Karate

Aron Stevens is the NWA National Champion at the moment. He owes some of his success to his Mongrovian Karate Sensai, the Question Mark, however. Both Stevens and the Question Mark spoke with Chris Van Vliet recently about the NWA, Mongrovian Karate, and more.

“Well, it’s been wonderful,” Stevens said when asked about his time in the NWA. “This company, its taken an old-school template, it has applied the modern flair to it like where the wrestling industry is headed but then when you have the template of that studio wrestling setting it just has a nostalgic feel but modern-day thrills and excitements.”

The Question Mark understands English but is unable to speak it. Stevens appears to understand the Question Mark’s Mongrovian perfectly but does not appear to speak the language himself.

“(The Question Mark) hails from the nether-regions of Mongrovia,” Stevens said. “We met on the set of one of my movies ‘Shogun in Malibu’ he was the fight coordinator and I brought him here to the NWA to kind of watch my back, help me out, and we are getting him accustomed to western culture.”

Nick Aldis Reveals Possible Stipulation For Title Match Against Marty Scurll

Last night on NWA Powerrr, Nick Aldis unveiled some unique potential stipulations for another title match against Marty Scurll. Aldis defeated Scurll and successfully defended the NWA World Heavyweight Championship at the Crockett Cup last year but Scurll is lobbying for another crack at the belt.

On Powerrr, Aldis said that he is willing to defend the title against Scurll again at this year’s Crockett Cup event but only under one condition. That condition is if Scurll doesn’t defeat Aldis for the NWA World Heavyweight Championship, Scurll will refund every single person who attended the show the cost of their ticket.

The NWA has pinned a video of Aldis laying out the terms to the top of their Twitter page:

Aldis also made a point of mentioning that the exact date and venue for the Crockett Cup have yet to be announced. He invited cities to bid for the event. The show is planned for April.

Nick Aldis On Joining The NWA

Aldis sat down for an interview with Chris Van Vliet recently and discussed what led to him joining the NWA.

“Dave (Lagana) called me and just kind of said ‘what’s going on with you? What are you doing?’ Cause I mean I had just fallen off the face of the Earth in wrestling,” Aldis said. “Everyone just assumed that I would go to WWE after I finished up with TNA, that didn’t happen.”

Nick Aldis Talks What Led To Him Joining The NWA

The National Wrestling Alliance presented Hard Times last Friday night. NWA World Heavyweight Champion Nick Aldis faced ROH’s Flip Gordon on the show. Aldis recently sat down with Chris Van Vliet and spoke about how he first got involved with the NWA.

Aldis said he was just bouncing around the indies when his wife Mickie James was brought back to WWE.

“I just very candidly told (Lagana) that for whatever reason there seems to be some sort of problem with WWE and I don’t really fit in anywhere else. This new style had taken such a hold on everything. Celebrating this high-impact, fast-paced, high-spot style, and there’s nothing wrong with that.”

He would continue to say he felt as though he didn’t fit in with where wrestling was going.

“You have hot and cold periods and I was cold,” Aldis continued.

Nick Aldis Joins The NWA

Then Billy Corgan bought the NWA and Dave Lagana phoned Alids, who had worked with Corgan briefly in TNA.

“Then Dave started explaining what their philosophy was and their vision for what they want to achieve, and explain Billy’s vision for the things he missed in wrestling,” Aldis said. “I have to explain. When Billy came to Impact, literally his first day on the job was my last day.”

“He helped produce this one thing I was in and then it was like ‘alright, bye.'”

Aldis went on to tell Lagana some of what he missed in wrestling as well.

“I think there is a bunch of people that miss the classic like irresistible force versus immovable object, here’s the showdown, who is going to win and who’s going to be the world champion? The world champion?”

“Billy called me 2 minutes later and was just gushing about Dick the Bruiser and the Crusher,” Aldis continued.

Billy Corgan & Dave Lagana Talk NWA’s Business Model, Plans For Profitability

Nick Aldis On NWA’s Championship Credibility, Working With AEW

National Wrestling Alliance World Heavyweight Champion Nick Aldis recently spoke with Sports Illustrated. During their conversation, Aldis addressed NWA’s championship credibility. He also broached the possibility of a working relationship between NWA and All Elite Wrestling.

“The NWA has proven that people wanted to take this world championship seriously again,” Aldis said. “The credibility was given to me by all the men who held the title before I did, and I represent the qualities and attributes that people identify with as world champion.

Nick Aldis On NWA Working With AEW

Nick Aldis then addressed the idea of the NWA and AEW working together. He stated how the idea is brought up “almost daily.”

“The NWA is open to working with anyone. There are a number of wrestlers outside the WWE that are viewed as elite-level guys, so it’s only a matter of time before the audience starts demanding the main-event matches they want to see. We want to give the fans the matches they want to see, these super fights.”

He continued, “If AEW wants to be involved in big, marquee matches, then they have two choices: go out and write some more big checks to some more guys, or they’re going to have to come to the table and work out some super fights with the NWA.”

NWA’s next pay-per-view, Hard Times, will take place this Friday from GPB Studios in Atlanta, Georgia. Nick Aldis is set to compete against Ring of Honor’s Flip Gordon in an inter-promotional matchup.

NWA Hard Times: Nick Aldis Vs. Flip Gordon Signed For Event

The National Wrestling Alliance has announced that a “huge” inter-promotional match will take place on the company’s upcoming pay-per-view event, NWA Hard Times.

According to the announcement, NWA World Heavyweight Champion Nick Aldis will face Ring of Honor’s Flip Gordon in a singles match.

The match will take place at the GPB Studios in Atlanta, Georgia, on Friday, January 24 during the upcoming pay-per-view.

Nick Aldis has made appearances at ROH events this past weekend, with him attacking Marty Scurll at ROH Center Stage. Aldis also appeared at Honor Reigns Supreme, where he was run off by Villain Enterprises’ Brody King and Flip Gordon.

Marty Scurll has signed a new deal with ROH and has joined the booking team of the company. His new contract allows him the freedom to work with other promotions like the NWA.

The NWA Hard Times sold out in three hours when the tickets went live on December 20, 2019. The company also announced that the VIP tickets sold out in just three minutes. The quick sell out comes after their previous event, NWA Into The Fire also sold out in the three hours time frame.

Hard Times will also feature a tournament to crown a new NWA World Television Champion. The announcement was made during the Into The Fire pay-per-view, along with the announcement of Hard Times.

NWA Hard Times will take place on January 24, 2020, in Atlanta, Georgia at the GPB Studios.

Billy Corgan & Dave Lagana Talk NWA’s Business Model, Plans For Profitability

NWA executives Billy Corgan and Dave Lagana were guests on Sam Roberts’ NotSam Wrestling podcast earlier this week. Topics discussed include their Into the Fire pay-per-view, producing ‘television’ without a TV deal, their business model and hopes for eventual profitability.

Billy Corgan says it will be ‘interesting’ to see if they can continue operating without a television deal. Currently, the weekly NWA Powerrr series is distributed via YouTube.

“If you remember when TNA first started with Jarrett they were running the PPV model, which I was interested in just from a consumer point of view. It was like whatever, $3 to watch an episode or whatever,” said Corgan.

He continued, “I would watch a lot of them because I wanted to support the idea that they were trying to do something different as far as the market place. So I think we are in the same position, where we might be in a situation where we can continue to grow the NWA, be able to do live shows, and not actually have to serve any particular master as far as a network would go.”

NWA’s Road to Profitability

Of course, not having to ‘serve a particular master’ also comes with the downside of not receiving lucrative TV rights fees. Dave Lagana touched upon that situation indirectly when talking about the NWA’s business model. Lagana believes the company is “maybe six months away” from being profitable.

“As we scale this product, we’re so much closer than people think to being a very scalable product.” Lagana said. “I ran the numbers on Powerrr, I was like, ‘We’re maybe six months away from really being profitable on this show, on our own, without having to take an investment from anybody,’ and it may even be faster than that.”

The NWA will present another pay-per-view event in January. They held the latest round of NWA Powerrr TV tapings on Monday night:

Marty Scurll has joined the NWA (National Wrestling Alliance).

The former ROH star made a surprise appearance at Saturday’s NWA Into The Fire pay-per-view from the GPB Studios in Atlanta, Georgia that aired on FITE.tv.

He did so after Nick Aldis defeated James Storm in a 2 Out Of 3 Falls Match by winning 2 falls to 1 to retain the NWA World Heavyweight Title. The angle happened when the lights went out then back on with Scurll coming out to confront Aldis.

NWA Into The Fire PPV Results

This appeared to tease a feud between the two stars at likely the next pay-per-view event for the NWA. The show is slated to take place on Friday, January 24th, 2020.

The name, location, and date has yet to be announced as of this writing.

Earlier this week, Dave Meltzer reported that Scurll had at least one independent date booked and it was being kept super secret. Thus, this could be what Meltzer was talking about. It also likely confirms that he has moved on from Ring of Honor.

The future for Scurll isn’t completely known right now as not all of the details on his agreement with the NWA isn’t out yet. It’s no secret that Scurll has options right now regarding his future in the pro wrestling business.

It’s been reported that both WWE and AEW does have an interest in signing him. There have also been teases on Being The Elite about the former ROH star as he’s good friends with The Young Bucks, Cody Rhodes, and Adam Page, who are all under contract with All Elite Wrestling.

Nick Aldis Talks NWA Into The Fire PPV, Jim Cornette’s Departure

Nick Aldis will defend his NWA World Heavyweight Championship against James Storm tonight on PPV. The NWA presents “Into the Fire” tonight from the GPB Studios in Atlanta, GA. Aldis was a guest recently on VOC Nation’s In the Room podcast.

During the conversation, Aldis talked about the situation involving Jim Cornette.

“I have defended Jim (in the past) for stuff that was in my opinion recreational outrage…it doesn’t come down to that; what it comes down to is being a distraction. We’ve got an hour to make an impression and get everyone talking and wanting to tune in next week. If all everyone is talking about is arguing and wanting a different commentator, it puts us in a difficult spot….we thank Jim for everything he did; ultimately he can go back to his podcast and say whatever the hell he wants, and we don’t have to worry about it anymore.”

Aldis also spoke about tonight’s PPV:

“We’ve been blown away with the pre-sale and the numbers and the interest and everything. It’s an indication that business is still on the up…Everyone is focused on that one thing, growth; we need to keep building brick by brick.”

He also addressed his opponent tonight, James Storm.

“When we talk about (someone) who embodies the spirit what we are trying to achieve with the NWA, James is right at the top of the list in many ways. You’re talking about a guy who knows how to tell stories in the ring, have great matches, and whether you like him or not, he’s a guy who has 100% conviction and believes in who he is. He’s as brash, outgoing, and gregarious as a wrestler should be in many ways…He’s wrestled a who’s who of the industry, and is a who’s who of the industry in many ways himself. He’s a seasoned professional.”

Colt Cabana Talks About Love Of Long-Term Storytelling, Showcasing A Serious Side In NWA

Normally associated with a more light-hearted, comedic style of pro wrestling, Colt Cabana has shared his intentions to harness a more serious version of himself for NWA. He discussed his plans during a panel at Starrcast IV in Baltimore, revealing he is more than happy to follow NWA President Billy Corgan’s vision in how to tell their stories.

“I can wrestle any way. You want me to be serious? I’ll be serious, but if you leave it up to me, I will be the goofball that I am, that’s the wrestling I prefer,” Cabana said, “but Billy Corgan has a vision and that’s his vision and I respect it. I’m in that role and I’m going to do that role for him and I’m going to enjoy it because I love wrestling and so I have no problem doing that and I enjoy it to an aspect.”

Long-Term Storytelling

Cabana admitted his love for long-term storytelling, recalling a previous feud he had with Homicide. A self-professed “journeyman” wrestler, Cabana is fully aware of how he hasn’t had many opportunities to develop long feuds with people. He’s hoping that his time in NWA changes that.

“I do like building stories. Years ago people remember me for a feud I had with Homicide where it started very silly and ended up in this crazy match with the Drain-O and then this crazy barbed wire match and that was a beautiful story and I loved telling that story so I love getting into that long-form and long-term storytelling.”

He continued, “But the way I kind of pathed out my career in past ten years, I’m such a journeyman and I’m so all over the place so I don’t really have that opportunity to tell those long stories so with NWA, they have it really down. They want to tell these stories and I’m definitely along for the ride and I look forward to maybe doing something super, super, super serious where you didn’t really expect it and you haven’t seen it in a long time.”

Wade Barrett To Replace Jim Cornette On NWA Announce Team

The NWA has found its new color commentator as Jim Cornette is out and replacing him will be none other than Stu Benett aka Wade Barrett.

It was revealed at the end of the latest episode of Powerrr that Bennett will be joining the NWA commentary team at Into the Fire as he’ll be calling the pay-per-view with Joe Galli.

Cornette and the NWA parted ways after Cornette made a racially offensive comment a few weeks ago on Powerrr when Trevor Murdoch was battling NWA World Heavyweight Champion Nick Aldis in a match.

Eric Bischoff Discusses Jim Cornette’s Controversial Comments On NWA Powerrr

Former SmackDown Executive Director Eric Bischoff has addressed the controversial comments recently made by Jim Cornette. On a recent episode of NWA Powerrr, Cornette remarked how “Trevor Murdoch is the only person who can strap a bucket of fried chicken to his back and ride a motor scooter across Ethiopia. Trevor Murdoch can take care of himself!”

Speaking on the post-show of his 83 Weeks podcast, After 83 Weeks with Christy Olson, Bischoff addressed Cornette’s statement. He highlighted Cornette’s unwillingness to adapt, and that this refusal to change with the times will ultimately put him “out to pasture.”

“Jim is a guy that is reluctant to adapt, and it’s really unfortunate because he’s a talented guy, he’s an entertaining guy, and he’s a very knowledgeable guy,” Bischoff said. “But if you’re not willing to grow and evolve and to understand the implications of some of the things that you do and say and how it affects other people adversely, then you’re going to get put out to pasture. I hope that doesn’t happen with Jim. But apparently that’s kind of what it appears to be. I don’t know where he goes from here… Who’s going to hire him? At this point, probably nobody.”

In the wake of Cornette’s statement, NWA took down the episode from YouTube to remove his statement. He is no longer a part of the promotion

Mark Henry to Jim Cornette: “Apologize and Mean It” or Admit You Just Don’t Like Black People

Mark Henry is telling Jim Cornette to apologize for comments made on a recent episode of NWA Powerrr. Henry recently spoke to TMZ.

“As much as I can say, I’m disappointed and I hope that he can try to fix this. But, some people just don’t like people of color,” Henry said to TMZ.

Henry then said Cornette needs to apologize.

“I would say, ‘Jim … please apologize, and mean it. And if you don’t mean it, then go all the way Darth Vader and [say] I just don’t like black people,'” Henry continued.

“At least I know who you are. And, then I can get rid of this feeling that I have in my heart. It’s like having your mother or father disown you. I feel like a sense of mourning.”

Cornette made the comment “He’s the only man I’ve ever known that can strap a bucket of fried chicken on his back and ride a motor scooter across Ethiopia,” during a recent broadcast of NWA’s weekly YouTube show. The episode was briefly taken offline, edited, and re-posted.

Mark Henry On Jim Cornette

Henry’s conversation with TMZ can be viewed in the player below:

“Prior to all of this, the relationship that I had with Jim Cornette has been really, really good. He taught me a lot about pro wrestling, he allowed me into his home to look at his archive, he helped me to be the wrestler that I became. And, I probably wouldn’t have been the guy without him.”

“But, it is very, very hurtful. And, I don’t get emotional about much, but I feel a sense of loss.”

Jim Cornette Gone From The NWA (Statement)

Jim Cornette has resigned from the National Wrestling Alliance and his duties as an announcer on NWA Powerrr.

Cornette and the organization came under fire Tuesday after the release of this week’s episode. During the broadcast, Cornette made a racist joke involving fried chicken and the African country, Ethiopia.

This wasn’t a late night tweet by Cornette or something that he blurted out during a live broadcast. The racist joke was made during a match taped nearly two months ago, an indication that NWA executives were aware of the offensive remark before it was published.

The episode in question was later edited, but the damage was done. Fans on social media were outraged and rightfully so. NWA World Heavyweight Champion issued a statement addressing the situation about NWA management’s “lack of judgement” –

NWA Statement on Jim Cornette’s Resignation

Effective immediately: Jim Cornette has resigned from the National Wrestling Alliance. As an announcer on the November 19th edition of NWA Power, Jim made remarks during a singles match between Nick Aldis and Trevor Murdoch that were both offensive and do not meet the high standards of decency and good faith of the National Wrestling Alliance.

To ensure that such an error can never happen again, we’ve established new procedures of review for all NWA programming going forward.

We sincerely regret our failure in this regard.

Billy Corgan Shares His Thoughts On Booking Heels And Faces In Modern Wrestling

National Wrestling Alliance (NWA) President Billy Corgan has shared how he views the idea of heels and faces in 2019. Speaking with Bully Ray and David LaGreca on SiriusXM’s Busted Open Radio, Corgan opened up about how he applies his concepts of right and wrong into NWA’s booking philosophies.

“I look at it like if you look at the way most modern—let’s call it like the HBO, Netflix-type shows are booked,” Corgan said. “You don’t have pure babyface anymore, because nobody believes that. So what I call it is kind of ‘moral ambiguity.’ Can a good person do a bad thing and can a bad person do a good thing? That’s where I’m sort of interested.”

He continued, “So I think if you’re trying to book more modern storylines in the 2019-2020 sense, I think you want to have those wrinkles in there, but at the end of the day, you have to believe in the core character of that person, or at the end of the day you’re wasting the audiences time.”

“Because what you’re saying is that at any point in time, magical things can just happen, and that’s where I have a problem. Because if you’re asking somebody who would invest in a really long storyline, and then just magically a hand reaches from the sky—what they call in theater ‘Deus Ex Machina—and God just changes the rules. Suddenly somebody can fly.”
